Transcript
- 0:02Welcome into the arena.
- 0:04This is the Arena of Blaze podcast, where
- 0:06our goal is to inspire men to join
- 0:09us in passing through the gate of Mary,
- 0:11being found worthy to wield the most powerful
- 0:14sword the world will ever know in the
- 0:17spiritual battle that rages all around us, the
- 0:20Holy Face of Jesus.
- 0:22I'm your willing host, Marco Sandoval.
- 0:25I'm just coming to my attention, maybe I
- 0:26need to give a little introduction of myself
- 0:28and why I'm doing this.
- 0:29So, you know, I'm really just a toddler
- 0:31Catholic who was invited into a deeper relationship
- 0:36with Mary.
- 0:38I kind of told during my story that
- 0:40I had a Vietnamese angel visit me and
- 0:43hand me the 33 days, and so that's
- 0:47why I'm here really.
- 0:48My goal is to spread the message of
- 0:50the Blessed Mother, of her love, of how
- 0:53she is such a fast way.
- 0:56She brings you closer to her Son, and
- 0:59the 33 days completely changed my life, increased
- 1:04my devotion to Mary, and so many fruits
- 1:06have come out of that.
- 1:07So that's why we're here, and today we're
- 1:09talking about Mary in Scripture.
- 1:11Again, this is the second time.
- 1:13We'll just continue walking through the Scriptures from
- 1:17the Visitation through the Nativity and the Shepherds.
- 1:23If you find value in this conversation, please
- 1:25like and subscribe.
- 1:27I think it's probably most important to subscribe,
- 1:28that way you get alerts when we get
- 1:29new videos dropped.
- 1:31Leave us a comment, a question, you know,
- 1:36those things are wonderful because it may send
- 1:38us in a direction that more benefits the
- 1:40conversation, benefits what you're getting out of it.
- 1:43We appreciate any feedback we get on the
- 1:45conversations.
- 1:46Our true algorithm is the Holy Spirit, so
- 1:49let's begin by renewing our total consecration to
- 1:52Jesus through Mary, so that we may do
- 1:55everything with, in, through, and for Mary as
- 1:58her instrument, so that she can lead us
- 2:01to more perfectly do everything with, in, through,
- 2:04and for Jesus.
- 2:06I, Marcos Sandoval, a repentant sinner, renew and
- 2:10ratify today in your hands, O Immaculate Mother,
- 2:15the vows of my baptism.
- 2:16I renounce Satan and resolve to follow Jesus
- 2:20Christ even more closely than before.
- 2:22Mary, I give you my heart.
- 2:25Please set it on fire with love for
- 2:27Jesus.
- 2:28Make it always attentive to his burning thirst
- 2:31for love and for souls.
- 2:33Keep my heart in your most pure heart,
- 2:35that I may love Jesus and the members
- 2:37of his body with your own perfect love.
- 2:41Mary, I entrust myself totally to you, my
- 2:44body and soul, my goods, both interior and
- 2:48exterior, and even the value of all my
- 2:50good actions.
- 2:52Please make of me, of all that I
- 2:54am and have, whatever most pleases you.
- 2:57Let me be a fit instrument in your
- 2:59immaculate and merciful hands for bringing the greatest
- 3:02possible glory to God.
- 3:04If I fall, please lead me back to
- 3:07Jesus.
- 3:08Wash me in the blood and water that
- 3:10flow from his pure side, and help me
- 3:12never to lose my trust in this fountain
- 3:15of love and mercy.
- 3:16With you, O Immaculate Mother, you who always
- 3:20do the will of God, I unite myself
- 3:23to the perfect consecration of Jesus as he
- 3:26offers himself in the Spirit to the Father
- 3:28for the life of the world.
- 3:30Amen.
- 3:31The month of this recording is September.
- 3:33September is a month of Our Lady of
- 3:36Sorrows, or Mother of Sorrows, you'll notice behind
- 3:39me.
- 3:39We've got Our Lady of Sorrows flag from
- 3:42TradFlags.
- 3:42Definitely check them out.
- 3:44They've got wonderful flags, and so I've been
- 3:47praying the chaplet to Our Lady of Sorrows
- 3:49this month.
- 3:50She's been very important to me.
- 3:52Father Carney asked me to pray a decade
- 3:55of my rosary to her for some things
- 3:57that he's discerning, and so just, yeah, if
- 4:00you're out there and you definitely pray that
- 4:03chaplet.
- 4:04It's so powerful, so powerful in revealing your
- 4:08sins.
- 4:09That's what I've always wanted to walk into
- 4:11it for.
- 4:12Our Lady will bring to the surface those
- 4:17tricky, insidious little sins that are kind of
- 4:20hard to put your fingers on, and especially
- 4:23she can help you sort out what's your
- 4:26will from what's the will of God.
- 4:28And so she just intercedes for us and
- 4:32raises our prayers, really what it is, raises
- 4:35it to a higher pitch so that Jesus
- 4:37will come to us and give us the
- 4:39graces that we need.
- 4:40Also, on the 8th of this month is
- 4:44the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
- 4:46That's her birth, so I'm gonna start by
- 4:50talking about just some questions that I had
- 4:52from the last episode.
- 4:54I jotted some notes down, but I thought
- 4:56they were interesting, so I thought, well, let
- 4:58me put some thought into these, and maybe
- 5:01we'll start there.
- 5:02So one of them was a question about
- 5:05whether Jesus had brothers, or the Bible refers
- 5:07to the brothers of Jesus in a few
- 5:09different places.
- 5:11You know, I would say that's a mainly
- 5:13a question about the perpetual virginity of Mary.
- 5:18You know, I think when we're thinking about
- 5:21Mary and Joseph, I think we have to
- 5:25raise our heart and our mind to a
- 5:27higher level.
- 5:28I think it's easy for us to look
- 5:29at the Holy Family in terms of ourselves,
- 5:33our own families, our fallen nature.
- 5:36I think in looking at them, we really
- 5:42have to look at it just at a
- 5:44higher level.
- 5:47So a lot of that can be rooted
- 5:49in pride.
- 5:50I feel like a lot of times we
- 5:51try to reach up and grab saints and
- 5:55holy people, and we try to bring them
- 5:58down to our level so that we can
- 5:59relate to them.
- 6:00I think that's like an easy thing that
- 6:03we can tend to fall into.
- 6:04So I would just say that Sacred Scripture
- 6:07and the Fathers of the Church, they pretty
- 6:10much always said that Mary was perpetual virginity,
- 6:15perpetually a virgin.
- 6:17The brothers of Jesus are never deemed as
- 6:19sons of Mary in Scripture.
- 6:21I think that's an important point.
- 6:22I would also say, too, is the further
- 6:26I've gotten into being closer to my relationship
- 6:30with Jesus, I started to refer to almost
- 6:35everybody I come in contact with, especially those
- 6:37who are Christian, Catholic, people I come across
- 6:42in church as brothers.
- 6:44I start to see everyone as my brother,
- 6:46and I often say, you know, thanks brother,
- 6:49or how you doing today brother.
- 6:50I often refer to most anyone I cross
- 6:53paths with in my Christian day-to-day
- 6:55life as my brother.
- 6:57So I think that's a typical thing that
- 6:59goes back to that time.
- 7:01But to me, the most important tell of
- 7:04this whole thing is that on the cross,
- 7:07one of Jesus's last things that he does
- 7:09is he entrusts Mary to John.
- 7:11He says, he says, woman behold your son,
- 7:15and son behold your mother.
- 7:17So he gives Mary to John, and it
- 7:19says that she, from that moment, she went
- 7:22into John's home as he's dying on the
- 7:24cross.
- 7:25So to me, that absolutely makes no sense.
- 7:28If he had brothers to take care of
- 7:30his mother, it just doesn't seem congruent that
- 7:34he would have given his mother to St.
- 7:35John to take care of.
- 7:37So that's the kind of scriptural basis for
- 7:40that.
- 7:41I think with all these things, what I
- 7:43would say, just kind of like, if you
- 7:45feel that Mary's calling you into a deeper
- 7:48relationship with her, if you feel like Jesus
- 7:50is calling you into a deeper relationship with
- 7:52his mother, I'll pick up the rosary and
- 7:55learn to pray and start praying it.
- 7:57Because nobody, there's nothing that can speak to
- 8:01your heart these truths quite like Mary herself
- 8:04can, Jesus can, because he wants his mother
- 8:06to be honored, just like he gave her
- 8:08to John.
- 8:10And as we continue to walk through the
- 8:11scripture, you'll see more and more that she
- 8:14plays a vital role in salvation history.
- 8:18You know, again, as we said last time,
- 8:20she's like the perfect witness, the perfect, she
- 8:26understands perfectly the Trinity by her relationship to
- 8:29all three members.
- 8:30You'll see at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit
- 8:34comes, she's present.
- 8:36So she's always brokering and bringing others closer
- 8:41to her son, bringing others closer to her
- 8:44spouse, the Holy Spirit, and she's always present
- 8:47and kind of, you know, kind of an
- 8:50advocate for us in that way.
- 8:52The other one is the Immaculate Conception.
- 8:55You know, Catholics, we believe that Mary was
- 8:57preserved from original sin, that she had no
- 9:00corrupt nature.
- 9:02To me, that comes most clearly through my
- 9:06mind first, in reading about the Ark of
- 9:08the Covenant.
- 9:09So if you go back in the Old
- 9:11Testament and read about the Ark of the
- 9:14Covenant and everything around that, I'm not gonna
- 9:16go too much into depth on that here,
- 9:18but Moses goes up on the mountain and
- 9:20he's with God for 40 days, comes down,
- 9:24he's glowing because he was in the presence
- 9:26of God, and he has basically all of
- 9:29God's instructions.
- 9:30And if you go through those chapters, he
- 9:32says, and God said to do this, and
- 9:34God said to do this, just like this,
- 9:36and just like that.
- 9:37And so if you look at how the
- 9:39Ark of the Covenant is specifically laid out
- 9:42and how important it is that nobody touches
- 9:45it that's not worthy to touch it, and
- 9:47then you think about what was in the
- 9:50Ark of the Covenant and what its purpose
- 9:52was for the people, and then you lean
- 9:54into Jesus and what Jesus is being carried
- 9:59into the world through Mary and what Jesus
- 10:02truly is, divine, and what Jesus meant to
- 10:05the people.
- 10:06I think it's a, you know, it's, of
- 10:09course, the new Ark that's going to carry
- 10:12the Son of God is going to be
- 10:13at a higher degree than the Ark of
- 10:16the Covenant was in the Old Testament, so
- 10:19it just makes perfect sense to me, in
- 10:22my mind, that there would be absolutely no
- 10:25possibility of any corrupt nature in Mary to
- 10:29be that intimately intertwined with Jesus growing in
- 10:33her womb.
- 10:36You know, so what we'd say is when
- 10:39Jesus did the work of salvation, he proactively
- 10:43redeemed Mary.
- 10:46She was redeemed by Christ in advance so
- 10:49she could be a suitable vessel to bring
- 10:51him into the world.
- 10:52So it's a difference between redemption that preserves
- 10:56versus redemption that cleanses, and at the Annunciation
- 11:00we know the angel says, full of grace
- 11:02to Mary.
- 11:04Okay, and as we know in Genesis, God
- 11:06created Adam and Eve without original sin.
- 11:10They were created incorruptly in the beginning, then
- 11:14they fell.
- 11:15So we know that Mary and Jesus are
- 11:19the new Eve and the new Adam.
- 11:22So again, you know, I guess I'll say
- 11:25this throughout many times, as I've gotten to
- 11:29know the Word, as I read the Scripture,
- 11:32and I got to know God through Scripture,
- 11:34know Jesus the way he works, of course
- 11:37God's never constrained by his creation, but he
- 11:40created things in a certain way because they're
- 11:42of him.
- 11:43Like, he created him, in my mind, he
- 11:45created him that way because they were good,
- 11:48and when all creation was complete, he said,
- 11:50very good.
- 11:50So it makes sense that when he's gonna
- 11:53recreate and restore humanity, he's gonna create in
- 11:58the same manner because he's the same creator,
- 12:01and that's kind of his fingerprints of creation.
- 12:04So I hope that helps.
- 12:05Anyone out there who has those questions, again,
- 12:08I would just say Charlie Kirk, at the
- 12:11end of his life, they say he was
- 12:12praying the Rosary, so I think that's a
- 12:15good witness.
- 12:17He, you know, it's said that he had
- 12:19some curiosity, so that's the best way, in
- 12:24humility, to put yourself in prayer.
- 12:27Ask God.
- 12:28If you don't feel comfortable at the Rosary
- 12:30or asking for Mary's intercession, pray to Jesus
- 12:33to ask him to show you what he
- 12:36wants for you in regards to his mother,
- 12:40how he wants his mother to be honored,
- 12:41and you will answer good, true prayers like
- 12:44that, for sure.
- 12:46So we got Mary over here with roses.
- 12:51You know, that's, I love Mary.
- 12:53It's stressful for me to do these episodes
- 12:55because I'm a doting son of Mary, so
- 12:58I don't, I'm always concerned that I'm gonna
- 13:01speak highly enough of her, I'm gonna speak
- 13:03well enough of her.
- 13:04I pray on my way here that the
- 13:06Holy Spirit will come and fill me with
- 13:08what he wants said about her, so yeah,
- 13:11so bear with me.
- 13:12But first Saturday, I celebrate the first Saturday
- 13:16devotion that comes from Our Lady of Fatima.
- 13:18She requested that as part of Our Lady
- 13:20of Fatima, so that will be this Saturday.
- 13:25So we always take roses and go to
- 13:27that Mass.
- 13:28My church has a 7 a.m. Mass
- 13:30devoted to that first Saturday.
- 13:32We pray the Rosary after, spending 15 minutes
- 13:37meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, and
- 13:41then going to confession within a, I can't
- 13:44remember what the range is, but within a
- 13:45close range around for Saturday is basically what
- 13:49you have to do to make that devotion.
- 13:52In future episodes, I definitely want to go
- 13:54into the Rosary.
- 13:55I'm reading a book currently about the history
- 13:57of the Rosary, a wonderful book.
- 13:58I'm learning so much about it, and I
- 14:01want to walk into that and share that
- 14:02with you as I get through that.
- 14:04The Rosary, a lot of times people think
- 14:07it's about Mary.
- 14:08It's definitely a Marian devotion, but the mysteries
- 14:12of the Rosary are really about Jesus's life.
- 14:15I mean, it's, Mary's entire being is created
- 14:19for the purpose of Jesus.
- 14:21She leads us to him, so those mysteries
- 14:23of the Rosary, today's the sorrowful mysteries, for
- 14:26instance.
- 14:26So, the agony in the garden, that's Jesus
- 14:29in the garden before he's betrayed.
- 14:31Mary's not in the picture there.
- 14:33The scourging at the pillar is the second
- 14:36one.
- 14:36The third one's a crowning with thorns.
- 14:38The fourth one is the carrying of the
- 14:39cross, and the fifth one is the crucifixion.
- 14:41So, those are all about Jesus.
- 14:43So, as you pray those Hail Marys, you're
- 14:46meditating on those mysteries.
- 14:48Of course, we know Mary was with him
- 14:51every step of the way, all the way
- 14:52to the cross.
- 14:53So, she has intimate knowledge of exactly what
- 14:55he was going through as devotees of the
- 14:58Holy Face of Jesus.
- 15:00The Veil of Veronica occurs right in the
- 15:02middle of those mysteries.
- 15:04Mary was present for all of that.
- 15:06So, I truly believe as you pray those
- 15:10Hail Marys, you're placing your heart in her
- 15:12hands to where she can communicate to you
- 15:14what she saw.
- 15:16The Immaculate Heart and the Sacred Heart are
- 15:18never to be separated.
- 15:19So, she, at a very, very deep level,
- 15:22knew everything that her son was going through.
- 15:24So, I think she enriches in you, in
- 15:27your heart, in your mind, devotion to those
- 15:31whatever mysteries you're praying over.
- 15:35Okay, so scriptural.
- 15:38I want to start with the litany of
- 15:41Mary, her titles.
- 15:42I know I had mentioned this last time.
- 15:44I think they're very illuminating to think of
- 15:47the ways that the Church describes Mary in
- 15:51these litanies.
- 15:52So, I'm just going to go through these
- 15:53quickly.
- 15:54Mother of God, Virgin of Virgins, Mother of
- 15:59Christ, Mother of the Church, Mother of Divine
- 16:04Grace, Mother Most Pure, Mother Most Chaste, Mother
- 16:09Inviolate, Mother Undefiled, Mother Most Lovable, Mother Most
- 16:16Admirable, Mother of Good Counsel, Mother of our
- 16:20Creator, Mother of our Savior, Virgin Most Prudent,
- 16:26Virgin Most Venerable, Virgin Most Renowned, Virgin Most
- 16:32Powerful, Virgin Most Merciful, Virgin Most Faithful, Mirror
- 16:39of Justice, Seat of Wisdom, Cause of our
- 16:44Joy, Spiritual Vessel, Vessel of Honor, Singular Vessel
- 16:51of Devotion, Mystical Rose.
- 16:54I like that one.
- 16:55It's a pretty one.
- 16:57Tower of David, Tower of Ivory, House of
- 17:02Gold, Ark of the Covenant, Gate of Heaven,
- 17:06Morning Star, Health of the Sick, Refuge of
- 17:12Sinners, Comfort of the Afflicted, Help of Christians,
- 17:18Queen of Angels, Queen of Patriarchs, Queen of
- 17:22Prophets, Queen of Apostles, Queen of Martyrs, Queen
- 17:28of Confessors, Queen of Virgins, Queen of Saints.
- 17:35I love those.
- 17:36They're beautiful.
- 17:38I love thinking about them.
- 17:39I almost get a little emotional as I
- 17:41read through them because they're just so intimate.
- 17:44They're so, you know, I want somebody like
- 17:49that in my life.
- 17:50There are many of those titles that when
- 17:53you need to be comforted, she's a great
- 17:55place to go for comfort.
- 17:57I love Morning Star.
- 17:58That's a beautiful one to me.
- 17:59I love to watch the sky.
- 18:01I love sunrises and sunsets.
- 18:03There's been many a time where I'm driving
- 18:05somewhere early in the morning and the sunrise
- 18:07is coming and I see that first Morning
- 18:09Star and I always think of our beautiful
- 18:11Blessed Mother.
- 18:12So I think those are important things to
- 18:15have out there.
- 18:16So we're gonna start with the visitation, kind
- 18:22of a continuation of the Annunciation.
- 18:26So this is in Luke chapter 1 verse
- 18:2939 and on.
- 18:31Mary visits Elizabeth.
- 18:33During those days Mary set out and traveled
- 18:36to the hill country in haste to a
- 18:39town of Judah where she entered the house
- 18:42of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
- 18:44When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped
- 18:48in her womb and Elizabeth, filled with the
- 18:50Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice
- 18:53and said, Most blessed are you among women,
- 18:57and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
- 18:59And how does this happen to me that
- 19:01the mother of my Lord should come to
- 19:03me?
- 19:04For at the moment the sound of your
- 19:05greeting reached my ears, the infant in my
- 19:08womb leaped for joy.
- 19:10Blessed are you who believed that what was
- 19:13spoken to you by the Lord would be
- 19:15fulfilled.
- 19:17So much in that.
- 19:19Such a beautiful passage.
- 19:21You know, I love haste.
- 19:27That word haste, it kind of keeps coming
- 19:31up and recurring.
- 19:33Mary makes haste often.
- 19:35I feel like that's a characteristic as a
- 19:37son of Mary that I have taken on.
- 19:40I always, when I feel like I know
- 19:41the prudent way, I make haste that way.
- 19:44I don't hesitate.
- 19:45I just go about doing what I feel
- 19:48like she wants me to do, ultimately Jesus
- 19:52wants me to do, through her.
- 19:54So that's a very key word for me
- 19:58in my devotion to Mary.
- 19:59I love that word.
- 20:01I also love it that her greeting, right,
- 20:05Mary greeted Elizabeth, and when she greeted her,
- 20:10St. John the Baptist in her womb leaped.
- 20:13I think that's another beautiful thing.
- 20:15So Mary's voice carries Jesus, carries Jesus even
- 20:21when he's in the womb.
- 20:22I love thinking of these two infants in
- 20:25the womb.
- 20:25Like our society has such a society of
- 20:31death in so many ways.
- 20:34Abortion, we're always going round and round about
- 20:37abortion.
- 20:39We always try to minimize and belittle the
- 20:42infant in the womb, called a fetus, called
- 20:45a clump of cells, called all these other
- 20:47things, but God forbid we actually call it
- 20:49an infant.
- 20:50And here in Scripture you have two infants
- 20:53meeting through their mothers, through the voice of
- 20:57Mary.
- 20:58Jesus is communicating to St. John the Baptist
- 21:01who's leaping for joy.
- 21:04That's just a beautiful image.
- 21:06I'll probably get myself in trouble for this,
- 21:08but I've told many a priest that I
- 21:12feel like the Church is missing a sacrament
- 21:14right here.
- 21:15I feel like conception is a sacrament that
- 21:17we miss, because there's so much scripturally about
- 21:21infants in the womb from the moment of
- 21:23conception.
- 21:23I would solve a lot of problems if
- 21:26we had a sacrament of conception in the
- 21:28Church when it comes to abortion, but for
- 21:31another day.
- 21:32So shortly thereafter, the infant leaps in her
- 21:36womb, and Elizabeth, it says, filled with the
- 21:39Holy Spirit.
- 21:41It's a great mystery.
- 21:43I mean, we know that Jesus later says
- 21:45in Matthew 11 11, none greater among those
- 21:50born of women is John the Baptist.
- 21:53So that's an interesting thing to say.
- 21:56It seems to me that Jesus is communicating,
- 22:00is saving grace already.
- 22:02He's already here.
- 22:04He's not even outside the womb, and yet
- 22:05he's already bringing salvation in the world.
- 22:07That's the way I understand this scripture.
- 22:11And then she responds, Elizabeth saying, Most blessed
- 22:15are you among women and blessed is the
- 22:17fruit of thy womb.
- 22:19This is the Hail Mary prayer, right?
- 22:21So from the Annunciation, Hail Mary full of
- 22:25grace, the Lord is with thee.
- 22:27Annunciation piece, and then from the Visitation piece,
- 22:32Most blessed are you among women and blessed
- 22:34is the fruit of thy womb.
- 22:36That's the first half of the Hail Mary,
- 22:39and the second half is an intercessory.
- 22:41We're asking Mary to intercede for us.
- 22:44So that's the whole prayer.
- 22:46Again, it's rooted in Jesus.
- 22:51It's a prayer to Mary, and the fact
- 22:53that in the means that we want Mary
- 22:55to pray on our behalf, to bring her
- 22:57Son to us, and us to her Son,
- 22:59but the prayers are rooted in Jesus.
- 23:05And then she knows, Elizabeth knows that it's
- 23:09the Lord.
- 23:10She's filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 23:11She knows that she's the mother of my
- 23:13Lord.
- 23:13That's another one of her titles, coming from
- 23:16her mouth with the Spirit.
- 23:19You know, she just reflects on how her
- 23:21infant leaped in her womb for joy, because
- 23:23the Savior came in the world, and we
- 23:24know that John the Baptist was going to
- 23:26be the one to announce him.
- 23:28So, very good.
- 23:30That's a very, very good scripture.
- 23:33Then Mary, after that, the Canicle of Mary.
- 23:35So this is Luke 46.
- 23:37And Mary said, My soul proclaims the greatness
- 23:41of the Lord.
- 23:42My spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for
- 23:45he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness.
- 23:49Behold, from now on will all ages call
- 23:51me blessed.
- 23:52The Mighty One has done great things for
- 23:54me, and holy is his name.
- 23:57His mercy is from age to age to
- 23:59those who fear him.
- 24:00He has shown might with his arm, dispersed
- 24:03the arrogant of mind and heart.
- 24:06He has thrown down the rulers from their
- 24:08thrones, but lifted up the lowly.
- 24:10The hungry has filled with good things, the
- 24:13rich he has sent away empty.
- 24:15He has helped Israel, his servant, remembering his
- 24:18mercy, according to his promise to our fathers,
- 24:21to Abraham and to his descendants forever.
- 24:24Mary remained with her about three months, and
- 24:27then returned to her home.
- 24:30So the Magnificat.
- 24:32So again, these are kind of foundational elements
- 24:36to the Blue Army and the Rena Blay's
- 24:39podcast.
- 24:41Behold, Ece in Latin.
- 24:43Mary gives her fiat, and Jesus comes into
- 24:46the world, and then this is the Magnificat,
- 24:48where she's proclaiming the greatness of God.
- 24:51What a great gift she's been given, and
- 24:54she proclaims it.
- 24:55There's many things here that I love.
- 24:57My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.
- 24:59Sometimes you'll hear my soul magnifies the Lord,
- 25:02and I've thought in the past, how can
- 25:04anything magnify God?
- 25:06Because God is like so big, and he's
- 25:10everywhere.
- 25:10How can it be magnified?
- 25:12But you know, I read that to be,
- 25:16you know, does God need to be magnified
- 25:19in our world?
- 25:20Absolutely.
- 25:21Is he everywhere in our world?
- 25:23No, not in our not in our fallen
- 25:25nature.
- 25:27He's not.
- 25:28He's not everywhere.
- 25:29So that's the magnification that I like.
- 25:31I often think of a magnifying glass through
- 25:36the sun, and how magnifying glass focuses the
- 25:40rays of the sun and can catch something
- 25:42on fire.
- 25:43So this is often where I think how
- 25:46important Mary is to catching hearts on fire.
- 25:50Lovely.
- 25:52Again, it's her lowliness, so humble.
- 25:56She's supremely humble and lowly, and God comes
- 26:01and fills her, right?
- 26:02Less of her, more of God.
- 26:04I love how she proclaims all this.
- 26:06I also like this passage, how God dispersed
- 26:10the arrogant of mind and heart.
- 26:13This mind and heart, I know Father Bernie
- 26:15said the longest distance that anybody will travel
- 26:19is from the distance from the head to
- 26:22the heart, or the mind to the heart.
- 26:24That is a very interesting concept.
- 26:28You know, I can relate as an engineer,
- 26:31as somebody who uses his mind to be
- 26:36educated, uses my mind for my profession.
- 26:41It's, I think, easy for men to get
- 26:44lost in trying to understand, lost in trying
- 26:49to develop more knowledge, lost in knowing.
- 26:52And I think too far that way can
- 26:56minimize us getting to the heart.
- 26:59I think the heart is the higher pitch,
- 27:01and for me, this is the 33 days,
- 27:05trying to understand why I was doing the
- 27:08things I was doing, trying to understand how
- 27:11to be a better Christian, try to read
- 27:14more so I can know more.
- 27:16But once I went through the 33 days,
- 27:19it's less about knowing and more about seeing
- 27:22with your heart, reading with your heart, listening
- 27:26with your heart, which is kind of a
- 27:27hard concept to really define, but I just
- 27:34love that she puts that in here.
- 27:35And then at the end it says, Mary
- 27:37remained with her about three months and then
- 27:39returned to her home.
- 27:40And we know from the Annunciation that Elizabeth
- 27:43was six months pregnant.
- 27:44The angel told Mary that she was pregnant
- 27:46six months.
- 27:47So this is a great act of hospitality,
- 27:50and what a suffering for Joseph, too, in
- 27:53the middle of all of this.
- 27:54Like, Mary basically gets the Annunciation and then
- 27:58she immediately disappears for three months in hospitality.
- 28:02She makes haste to Elizabeth, who she was
- 28:04told was with child, in six months.
- 28:06So she's with Elizabeth, helping Elizabeth to get
- 28:09through to her ninth month, and I assume
- 28:13she was there for the birth of St.
- 28:15John the Baptist, and then she made her
- 28:16way back three months pregnant.
- 28:19These are all great mysteries.
- 28:21It's like, you're giving wonderful gifts in life,
- 28:26and then you're doing the work of the
- 28:29Lord, but yet there's always trial.
- 28:32Like, the bitterness is always intermingled with the
- 28:35sweet.
- 28:36So, sweetly, you know what your vocation is,
- 28:41and you're doing it.
- 28:42You said yes to it, and you're doing
- 28:44it, but then you have to make haste,
- 28:48and you have to go do something that's
- 28:50difficult, and Joseph has to struggle with what's
- 28:54going on, and then Mary comes back three
- 28:59months pregnant, and it's just an unbelievable trial
- 29:03that you can really only appreciate if you
- 29:06imaginatively place yourself into these stories, and you
- 29:10just really think, as you read them, you
- 29:13think about each passage and think, what would
- 29:16I feel like?
- 29:17What was Joseph feeling?
- 29:19What was Mary feeling?
- 29:20Try and put yourself in these different positions,
- 29:22and really, we get so far away from
- 29:25it, it becomes, you know, when we, I
- 29:27think there's a tendency to read Scripture, and
- 29:30it can be kind of flat.
- 29:32Like, it just goes in one ear and
- 29:34out the other.
- 29:34We don't really think about what these people
- 29:37were feeling, and what they were faced with
- 29:40in these different circumstances.
- 29:42Okay, so the next one is the birth
- 29:43of Jesus, Luke 2.
- 29:46In those days a decree went out from
- 29:49Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be
- 29:51enrolled.
- 29:52This was the first enrollment.
- 29:54When Quirinius was governor of Syria, so all
- 29:57went to be enrolled, each to his own
- 29:59town.
- 30:00And Joseph too went up from Galilee, from
- 30:02the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the
- 30:04city of David, that is called Bethlehem, because
- 30:07he was of the house and family of
- 30:09David, to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed,
- 30:12who was with child.
- 30:14While they were there, the time came for
- 30:16her to have her child, and she gave
- 30:18birth to her firstborn son.
- 30:20She wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid
- 30:23him in a manger, because there was no
- 30:25room for them in the inn.
- 30:27Now there were shepherds in that region, living
- 30:29in the fields, and keeping night watch over
- 30:31their flock.
- 30:32The angel of the Lord appeared to them,
- 30:34and the glory of the Lord shone around
- 30:36them, and they were struck with great fear.
- 30:38The angel said to them, Do not be
- 30:40afraid, for behold, I proclaim to you good
- 30:44news of great joy, that will be for
- 30:46all the people.
- 30:47For today, in the city of David, a
- 30:49Savior has been born for you, who is
- 30:52Messiah and Lord, and this will be a
- 30:54sign for you.
- 30:55You will find an infant wrapped in swaddling
- 30:57clothes, and lying in a manger.
- 30:59And suddenly, there was a multitude of the
- 31:02heavenly hosts, with the angel, praising God, and
- 31:05saying, Glory to God in the highest, and
- 31:08on earth peace to those on whom his
- 31:11favor rests.
- 31:13Oh, more, more really good stuff here.
- 31:16Manger, first thing it streaks out.
- 31:18So the infant Jesus is wrapped in swaddling
- 31:21clothes, and he's placed in a manger, a
- 31:23feeding trough.
- 31:25Oh what an echo that is to later,
- 31:28when he's actually gonna give us his body,
- 31:32blood, soul, and divinity to feast on.
- 31:34So he comes, he's born, and he's he's
- 31:37placed in the feeding trough, because he's gonna
- 31:38feed us in the future.
- 31:41I think that's a kind of a wonderful
- 31:43thing.
- 31:44There's no room at the inn, can't even
- 31:46imagine.
- 31:47This is the city, it's like your hometown
- 31:48for Joseph.
- 31:50Paul's relatives are there, his cousins are there,
- 31:52this is his family town.
- 31:54Even more familial than what we would think
- 31:58of in our day and age.
- 32:00Everyone's related, and you come into your town,
- 32:03and nobody will give you any room.
- 32:05Your wife is with child, it says they're
- 32:08betrothed, and so they have to go to,
- 32:11you know, she's ready to have the baby.
- 32:13They both know who the baby is, and
- 32:16they have to go into a stable.
- 32:18Just as a man, a provider, a protector,
- 32:20how grievously I could imagine Joseph's heart could
- 32:26be.
- 32:27I could imagine my heart would be if
- 32:30I couldn't find what I would judge to
- 32:32be a suitable place for my wife to
- 32:35give birth.
- 32:35That would be a very difficult trial.
- 32:38Again, this word behold, you know, behold to
- 32:42the shepherds, so the angels come to them
- 32:45in their lowliness, behold.
- 32:49Yeah, that's, and again this word haste, this
- 32:54word haste comes up.
- 32:56They make haste to go see, to go
- 32:59see what's, to go see about what the
- 33:02angels have told them about.
- 33:05So this last one we'll read here is
- 33:07the visit of the shepherds.
- 33:09This is Luke again 2 verse 15 and
- 33:12on.
- 33:13When the angels went away from them to
- 33:15heaven, the shepherds said to one another, let
- 33:17us go then to Bethlehem to see this
- 33:19thing that has taken place, which the Lord
- 33:22has made known to us.
- 33:23So they went in haste and found Mary
- 33:26and Joseph and the infant lying in the
- 33:28manger.
- 33:29When they saw this, they made known the
- 33:31message that had been told them about this
- 33:33child.
- 33:34All who heard it were amazed by what
- 33:36had been told them by the shepherds, and
- 33:39Mary kept all these things reflecting on them
- 33:41in her heart.
- 33:42When the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God
- 33:46for all they had heard and seen just
- 33:48as had been told them.
- 33:50So that's the last one, haste, this word
- 33:54haste.
- 33:55The shepherds were told, the angels came and
- 33:59told them what had happened.
- 34:02The whole choir of angels were there.
- 34:05They were afraid and, you know, of what
- 34:08the angel says, have no fear.
- 34:10And what do they do?
- 34:12They make haste.
- 34:13They look at each other and say they
- 34:14make haste to go see what the angels
- 34:16have told them.
- 34:18I love that.
- 34:19I love that word haste.
- 34:21May all of us in life, when we
- 34:23have these little moments come to us where
- 34:25we feel like a calling, we feel something
- 34:28on our heart, we're being beckoned to deeper.
- 34:31God's inviting us deeper into relationship with Him.
- 34:34Jesus is inviting us deeper into relationship with
- 34:36Him.
- 34:37Mary, inviting our curiosity to learn more about
- 34:40her.
- 34:40May we make haste to put ourselves in
- 34:44those, to say yes and put ourselves in
- 34:46those places that we may be fed and
- 34:50we may go to the next level in
- 34:53our faith journey.
- 34:56Okay, I think that's a wrap for today
- 34:57as far as the Scripture we're going to
- 34:59cover and kind of the reflections on it.
- 35:01Next time we'll continue chronologically through the Scriptures
- 35:04and continue into the presentation of the temple.
- 35:09I know one thing I forgot to mention
- 35:11is how Mary takes all these things into
- 35:14her heart.
- 35:15She reflects on them in their heart.
- 35:16That is another, when I say make haste,
- 35:19is a characteristic I've taken.
- 35:21I don't know if it's a characteristic of
- 35:24mine, but it's something that I look for
- 35:26and I pray for.
- 35:28I pray because I know that Mary, in
- 35:31multiple places, we'll see here again in the
- 35:34presentation, that she takes all these things into
- 35:37her heart and she reflects on them in
- 35:38her heart.
- 35:40That's a beautiful witness for us believers.
- 35:44I feel like that we need to take
- 35:47more into our heart and we definitely need
- 35:50to go to Mary in prayer and ask
- 35:53her to take things that we need into
- 35:57her heart and reflect on them, to take
- 35:58our hearts into her heart and reflect on
- 36:01our hearts and reveal to us things that
- 36:04we can't see.
- 36:06Others, our loved ones, somebody who's struggling, praying
- 36:09for Mary to take their heart into her
- 36:11Immaculate Heart and reflect on their heart and
- 36:15reveal to them their deepest needs, reveal to
- 36:19them what's true, and just anything along those
- 36:22that way.
- 36:23That is definitely a characteristic of Mary.
- 36:25It's a personality trait of Mary.
- 36:27It's an extremely powerful way of praying for
- 36:30her intercession.
- 36:32And so, I really encourage anybody out there
- 36:36who hears this to definitely do that.
- 36:38It's worked wonders in my life.
- 36:40It's given me a very deep relationship and
- 36:43love for Mary.
- 36:45It continues to beckon me deeper in with
- 36:48her.
- 36:48It just gives me so much comfort.
- 36:51So, I would just say at the end
- 36:53here, Mary, co-redemptrix, pray for us.
- 36:59Mary, mediatrix of all graces, pray for us.
