Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the 5 o'clock shadow.
- 0:09And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Skulk Glow, Portfolio Manager at PSG
- 0:14Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 0:16Skulk, you're an organised sort of fella compared to me.
- 0:17Look, I mean, compared to me.
- 0:20The big smog.
- 0:21The big smog.
- 0:25You could say to...
- 0:26Anyway, I won't go on with that theme.
- 0:29Sometimes, though, even an organised person like yourself, do you ever get
- 0:35overwhelmed with what's going on?
- 0:37Or do you ever say to yourself, I'm being numbed by what's going on,
- 0:41so I don't take it in anymore?
- 0:43And I mean the constant flow of news that comes from areas that shouldn't really
- 0:49concern us.
- 0:51In other words, tweets from certain people.
- 0:53Yeah, certain people.
- 0:55Let's name and shame.
- 0:58Come on.
- 0:59You know what I mean.
- 1:00You know what I mean.
- 1:01I know exactly what you mean.
- 1:02No, it's a very, very difficult market.
- 1:04I mean, I just read through, I mean, the S&P 500 opened now.
- 1:10And to get an idea, you know, what's standing out for us.
- 1:15And I think the main thing is actually they're mentioning the optimism and
- 1:22why the optimism.
- 1:23Well, Trump says the war is, quote, Close to over, unquote.
- 1:29Exactly.
- 1:31Exactly right.
- 1:32I don't know what to believe.
- 1:33I mean, I look at this and I think, are we going to get the next tweet later tonight
- 1:40and say,
- 1:42it's not over, we're closing the strait, and we're bombing the hell out of Iran
- 1:46again.
- 1:46I don't know.
- 1:48I think that's the conundrum we're sitting with.
- 1:51Yet, when you look at the S&P 500, we are flirting with that 7,000 mark again.
- 1:57And, you know, approaching new highs.
- 1:59I mean, who would have said?
- 2:01I mean, we're sitting with a very tough market.
- 2:06People, you're talking about something, a possible escalation to a third world war,
- 2:13yet S&P 500 is sitting at close to being all-time highs.
- 2:17Crazy, crazy market.
- 2:18It really is.
- 2:19And I was saying to a commentator, in fact, I'll name him.
- 2:22Name and shame, he said earlier on.
- 2:23I'll name him David Shapiro.
- 2:24I said to him, David.
- 2:26What is it going to take for the market to actually say, you know what, we're in big
- 2:32trouble globally,
- 2:34and it doesn't matter whether you're in Iran, America, or in
- 2:37Myanmar. The point is that the world is in trouble because of oil prices being here
- 2:43and the threat of nuclear war,
- 2:45and there has been a threat of nuclear war.
- 2:47If the wrong people have got the finger on the button and certain people have got
- 2:51their finger on the button that are the wrong people,
- 2:53something could happen.
- 2:55It's a 5% chance.
- 2:57But the point is, what will it take for the market to say, that's it, and I need a
- 3:0210%, 15%, 20%
- 3:04sell-off?
- 3:06I don't want it, but I would have thought when I first started in the markets all
- 3:08those years ago,
- 3:10I would have thought this is exactly the right environment for that sort of
- 3:13sell-off to be upon us.
- 3:15And it's not.
- 3:17I can't understand it.
- 3:19Not to call it a sell-off.
- 3:21I mean, that's what I'm hearing what you're saying.
- 3:23You're not...
- 3:25calling for the market to sell off.
- 3:27It's just when you sit in the market, and there was a few themes over the past,
- 3:30let's call it two to three years.
- 3:32I think we had the theme that, you know, the tariff theme,
- 3:39and that could put a bit of a dampen on some of the growth rate, we could see
- 3:45inflation.
- 3:47I think a massive theme for the past, I would say close to two years,
- 3:51Is individuals calling tops?
- 3:55People saying, well, the market, when I say the market, the S&P 500 is trading at
- 4:00elevated,
- 4:02not just expensive levels.
- 4:05It's elevated levels.
- 4:06It's levels that we've last seen in the 2000s. I mean, this is crazy.
- 4:13And then you get an environment where we've got such a geopolitical.
- 4:18You're talking about a 5% probability.
- 4:21I mean, if we sat here exactly a year ago and we said, what's the probability of
- 4:27this escalating?
- 4:29You would have put 2% on it, and the year before that, it was probably not 1%.
- 4:32This is really mind-boggling to sit in
- 4:39the difficult geopolitically,
- 4:43because we're not just talking about the US, Israel, and Iran.
- 4:49I mean, we're talking about the US, specifically Trump,
- 4:54calling out some of his best trading partners.
- 4:57He's calling NATO names, and NATO is the like of the UK, Germany,
- 5:03those type of countries.
- 5:06You're talking about naming and shaming.
- 5:08I mean, the names it's been calling, he's not making friends from yet.
- 5:14Hey, yet the U.S.
- 5:16market is flirting with 7,000 points.
- 5:18I'm not here to understand it.
- 5:20I'm just here to caution.
- 5:21I think we're not trying to call tops in this market,
- 5:26not trying to call bottoms in the market, but I would just caution anybody listening
- 5:33to this message just to know that this
- 5:35It's not over.
- 5:37It's an actual fact far from over.
- 5:39And one should just know that markets are not trading at cheap levels.
- 5:43You know, when we saw the COVID-19 pandemic happening,
- 5:51we had that period between, let's call it March and June, July-ish, where the market
- 5:57retraced
- 5:5925-30%. It went from being, ah, it's not cheap.
- 6:03But it went to very, very cheap levels.
- 6:06We didn't retrace to cheap levels.
- 6:08This wasn't a correction correction.
- 6:11Anyway, it is what it is.
- 6:13The other thing is that people say, well, the reason the market's doing well at the
- 6:20moment, when I say at the moment, I mean the last three or four days,
- 6:22is because of its earning season in the United States.
- 6:23And the earnings are going to be good.
- 6:24And the bank's earnings are going to be good.
- 6:26And I think we saw one bank coming out in the last 24 hours with, you know, dam
- 6:32busting results.
- 6:34I mean, it's quite extraordinary numbers.
- 6:36And I haven't looked at them, but I would imagine if someone said, what do you think
- 6:40the bank's results are going to be like?
- 6:42I'd say, well, they're going to be good.
- 6:44Why is that?
- 6:46Because the market's been good.
- 6:48The market's been going to record highs, and they've got proprietary trading desks.
- 6:50And also, they've been financing AI structures, AI companies, energy, that
- 6:54sort of thing.
- 6:56And if you look at the broad set of earnings of these banks, are they as
- 7:00broad?
- 7:02As they should be.
- 7:02It's like saying the market was up 5% over the last month.
- 7:06Was it a broad-based rally?
- 7:08I don't know whether it was.
- 7:09I mean, it's that example.
- 7:12You'll know better than me what the banks are up to.
- 7:14But I do think it's all slightly skewed, Skunk.
- 7:17I don't think there's, I don't think it's a reality.
- 7:21I don't think the word reality comes together when it comes to Main Street and
- 7:26Wall Street is what I'm saying.
- 7:28No, you're 100% right.
- 7:30I mean...
- 7:31Yeah, it's just mind-boggling.
- 7:36We don't need to spend more time on this.
- 7:39Yes, the banks brought out stunning results.
- 7:42I mean, wow.
- 7:44What results currently used banks, people that missed it.
- 7:48Morgan Stanley, yeah, a whopper, absolute whopper.
- 7:53We had Bank of America also coming out.
- 7:59rise in first quarter profits.
- 8:03That's also, they were looking quite upbeat.
- 8:07So in general, that is looking good.
- 8:10I looked at the latest data that I received from, that was once the Reuters
- 8:17S&P 500 update.
- 8:18What they do is, as the companies report, they run a dashboard to just show, is it a
- 8:24beat?
- 8:24Is it sort of in line?
- 8:26Or was it a miss?
- 8:27both in earnings and revenue.
- 8:30And then it runs it until it runs through all 500 companies.
- 8:34And it's not a lot of companies that's reported.
- 8:38It's really been, I think, something like 20 or 25 companies.
- 8:43Not a lot.
- 8:44We just started the earnings season.
- 8:45But those companies that reported, you know, that actually 80%
- 8:50of them beat forecast.
- 8:52So one can argue that most probably a lot of...
- 8:56economists, or let's call it analysts, reduced their forecast for the year as we
- 9:03went into this,
- 9:05let's call it, geopolitical unrest.
- 9:05We know before the whole Iran war, we had Venezuela.
- 9:12We had the worries about Greenland.
- 9:16So I think a lot of analysts might have looked at this and said, well, maybe I
- 9:23should just reduce my forecast.
- 9:25But still, 80% beat thus far.
- 9:25This is going to be the interesting one.
- 9:27Let's get through this reporting season.
- 9:29Just for interest sake, I had a look at it the other day.
- 9:33April month, for interest sake, is the best month for S&P 500, usually,
- 9:40historically.
- 9:42Interesting.
- 9:44Hmm, April.
- 9:44And September's the worst month, and April is the best month.
- 9:49That's very interesting, isn't it?
- 9:50Because normally you think October's the worst month, and I don't know what month.
- 9:53I would have thought January or December would be the best month for the S&P.
- 9:57But anyway, that's an interesting one.
- 10:00That's one for the I've learned it from Skulk Notebook, if you like.
- 10:05No, 65%.
- 10:0765% of the time we see positive months for the S&P 500.
- 10:13But more specifically, the best month on average usually is April.
- 10:19And that's I would say on the back,
- 10:23usually April we get the first quarter reportings.
- 10:27And usually it's that's it.
- 10:29So it's the first quarter reporting.
- 10:31And I think this year is going to be no different.
- 10:33So, yes, let's get through this reporting season.
- 10:36Let's see what Trump does next.
- 10:39If the war, as you mentioned, is close to being over and they get it over the line,
- 10:44the straight stay is open.
- 10:46Let's see where oil evens out because we know that inflation is still the biggest
- 10:52worry.
- 10:52We had the IMF brought out the economic outlook yesterday,
- 10:59and they were sort of muted a little bit.
- 11:02Not as optimistic as they've been last year.
- 11:05used to the the world got it come off somewhat.
- 11:11But that didn't dampen the optimism in markets.
- 11:14Markets are going upwards.
- 11:16Let's talk about markets now.
- 11:17Dollar round is 1637.
- 11:19Goodness me, that was above 17.
- 11:21Not that long ago, Skunk, with the dollar being stronger.
- 11:25Now the dollar has gone weaker again because everyone thinks the war is going
- 11:28to be over.
- 11:28So you don't buy the dollar as a safe haven asset.
- 11:31What a world.
- 11:322222 is the British pound against the round.
- 11:36The euro round is 1932.
- 11:39EUR$1.1820.
- 11:40The gold price is 4,808. That's not bad.
- 11:45After eight minutes of talking, we haven't mentioned the gold price until now.
- 11:494,808, down two-thirds of a percent.
- 11:53The platinum price is up one and a third percent to 21.28.
- 11:56And palladium is down slightly, down half a percent to 15.83.
- 12:01It's very, very quiet today.
- 12:02Even markets need to take a breather sometimes.
- 12:06What else have we got here?
- 12:08The South African 10-year bond yield, interesting one, 8.40%.
- 12:13Stronger, of course, the yield falling since the round has started strengthening
- 12:18again.
- 12:20The U.S.
- 12:2210-year yield is 4.28%.
- 12:22Still looks vulnerable to me.
- 12:24In other words, the yield rising, but that's me not believing Trump.
- 12:28The S&P 500 futures, you mentioned the spot price floating with 7,000.
- 12:32The futures price, the June price.
- 12:357,027, which is up 0.3% on the day.
- 12:39And going back to commodities, I'm doing it out of order today.
- 12:44Crude oil also steadying after a big sell-off in the last couple of days.
- 12:48Brent crude oil, $95.20, which is up 0.4%.
- 12:53And West Texas, $92.45, up 1.25%.
- 12:58Bitcoin has had a really good few days.
- 13:01Currently down, though, 1.5%.
- 13:03to 74,160.
- 13:08Earnings season in the US, what's the earnings season been like in South Africa
- 13:13since we last spoke, Skulk?
- 13:15Anything that really stood out for you?
- 13:17I can say nothing because there was no companies that reported today.
- 13:21Exactly, good.
- 13:22Lovely, I like that.
- 13:23What about the performers on the JSC?
- 13:26What's been up and down?
- 13:27Because again, this is a day that we don't often see, the JSC Top 40 Index.
- 13:33Down by 0.3%.
- 13:34And when I say we don't see that often, it's just because the increment of 0.3% is
- 13:39unusual.
- 13:39It's usually much higher or much lower than that.
- 13:43Yeah.
- 13:44Yeah, it was a funny day.
- 13:46Because originally when I started the day, when the market opened,
- 13:52it was quite optimistic and bullish.
- 13:55And it was just as the European markets opened up.
- 14:01or the UK market opened up,
- 14:04it did lose somewhat of its steam and ended the day in more negative territory.
- 14:09But in general, I thought it was quite a stable day, a really stable day.
- 14:14Okay, I've got AlphaMin on the upside of 4.85%, Harmony up 2.8%, Discovery
- 14:212.2% better, Bytes up 2.4%, Sasol up 1.8%.
- 14:26On the downside, the JSC itself, why is the JSC down 7%, Skulk?
- 14:31Think about that before I go on to Tungela down 4.1%, Quilter down
- 14:373.4%, Anglo Gold down 2.8%,
- 14:42and Goldfields are 2.75%.
- 14:46Loser.
- 14:46JSE, XDIV, what?
- 14:49yeah so all of them except uh um goldfields and angler gold all of them
- 14:56ex-dev scenario and i think on on the
- 14:58on the upside of top top performers i i don't think you mentioned shop right shop
- 15:03right was in the top five as well yeah that was that was up
- 15:05that was up 2.2 percent for today okay
- 15:05the other thing uh before we go is um i need to ask you if you uh joined the
- 15:13crystal challenge the david shapiro's crystal challenge you know the stock
- 15:19picking competition that he does every year.
- 15:21Did you join it this year?
- 15:23Every year.
- 15:25Last year I had FOMO that I literally just missed out.
- 15:28And this year I sort of went, like, I need to remember, I need to remember.
- 15:30And you and I had a conversation about the crystal.
- 15:33I think you said you had one or two companies.
- 15:36You've got two companies in.
- 15:37Yeah.
- 15:39You joined it.
- 15:41I entered it.
- 15:42I just wondered if you entered it as well.
- 15:43You didn't tell me which.
- 15:43I know.
- 15:44I know you didn't.
- 15:45And you're not going to tell us over.
- 15:46You're not going to tell us either.
- 15:48But when you mentioned that, I'm like, oh, no.
- 15:53I missed it again.
- 15:55But, yeah, so, yeah, unfortunately missed it again.
- 15:58But we'll set a reminder for next year.
- 16:00Yes, exactly.
- 16:00I'm going to set a reminder as well for my application to running the London
- 16:04Marathon.
- 16:06Skulk,
- 16:08I am out of 490 people who are in the challenge.
- 16:14Why are you laughing?
- 16:15You're laughing at me now, aren't you?
- 16:17Guess where I am.
- 16:21My goal was to be in the top 10 or the bottom 10.
- 16:25I don't want to be in the middle with everybody else.
- 16:28I think you had quite a great feel for the market this year.
- 16:33So I'm going to be guessing you're going to be closer to that top 10, if not in the
- 16:38top 10,
- 16:38than at the bottom because you had quite a...
- 16:42quite a few good calls out of 490 companies i'm number 386
- 16:49that's companies people so for all the listeners out there do what lindsey said
- 16:56don't do what lindsey do
- 16:58skulk low is uh we won't mention golf skulk low is a portfolio manager at psg
