- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. I'll never forget the first time
- 0:32I looked in the mirror and I didn't recognize my own face.
- 0:35Has that ever happened to you? Has Parkinson's ever made you
- 0:38feel like a stranger to yourself or blind sighted you with a new
- 0:41symptom that you never saw coming?
- 0:44If you've ever felt your identity slipping away, well,
- 0:46you're not alone. Stay with me because today I'm
- 0:48going to share the real truth about living with Parkinson's
- 0:51for the long haul. The stuff that nobody tells you
- 0:53when you're diagnosed and the stories that you don't get in
- 0:56the brochure. And trust me, there's some
- 0:58shocks nobody warns you about. Hey, I'm Bryce and welcome to
- 1:02living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad, and the reality.
- 1:05And if you're new here, I'm so glad you found us on this
- 1:07channel. It's not about sugar coating.
- 1:09It's about surviving and thriving with a little bit of
- 1:12humor and a lot of heart. And if you want real stories,
- 1:14not just the highlights and subscribe and you're the moment
- 1:18that Parkinson's will surprise you or maybe even the craziest
- 1:21thing it's ever thrown your way. You know, when I was first
- 1:25diagnosed about 15 years ago, I had this timeline in my head,
- 1:28right? I pictured a slow, steady to
- 1:30slope, a gentle decline that I can prepare for.
- 1:32You know, by your five, I'll be here, and by your 10, I'll be
- 1:36there and so on. And, well, the first shock,
- 1:39Parkinson's is less like a slope and more like a roller coaster
- 1:42operated by like a deprived clown.
- 1:45And just when you think you got a handle on it, like, boom, new
- 1:48symptoms, new challenges, new rules.
- 1:51You know, I remember about my about three years after my
- 1:54diagnosis, I, you know, I'd gone from, like, going for like, long
- 1:58walks to barely making it down the block, right?
- 2:01And I thought to myself, OK, yeah, I guess this is my new
- 2:04normal, right? And then out of nowhere, I
- 2:07signed up for super walk in Canada here.
- 2:11And I went walking and it, you know, it wasn't graceful.
- 2:13You know, my left, my, my left leg dragged my, I sweated
- 2:17buckets and I probably looked like I was auditioning for the
- 2:19world's slowest relay team. But I, I finished, I crossed the
- 2:22finish line. And it reminded me I still have
- 2:25this fight. I'm still in the fight.
- 2:28So when things suddenly change, you need to try to let go of the
- 2:32forever thinking, right? Remind yourself, this is my
- 2:35right now, not my forever, right?
- 2:38It's this is my right now, not my forever.
- 2:41Parkinson's can take, but sometimes it gives you back more
- 2:44grit than you thought you had. It really does.
- 2:48So let's get real for a second. Everyone with Parkinson's
- 2:51worries about the future, right? How fast will things progress?
- 2:55What will it mean for your independence?
- 2:56What was it going to mean for your family?
- 2:58Was it going to mean for your dignity?
- 3:00If you've ever had those late night Google sessions, and to be
- 3:03honest, I have, or the 3:00 AM doctor Google anxiety spirals,
- 3:07then you're not alone here. You know, when Carter and I got
- 3:11married, I wondered if she truly knew what she was signing up
- 3:14for. Some days, honestly, I worry
- 3:16about about her more about her than I do myself.
- 3:19And but she's taught me that love and humor don't just
- 3:23survive. They thrive even on the hardest
- 3:25days. You know, like, like the time I
- 3:28froze in the middle of our kitchen dance party, right?
- 3:30Music's playing, me stuck like a statue.
- 3:32And she just wrapped her arms around me and she just turned it
- 3:35into a slow dance. I was frustrated, but I was also
- 3:38grateful. And you'd be surprised.
- 3:40What And who holds you up when things get tough.
- 3:45So if you're in a relationship, you know, it's best to talk
- 3:47about your fears openly. You know, don't forget to laugh
- 3:50and don't forget to laugh together.
- 3:52And when things get heavy, you know, steal a dance in the
- 3:54kitchen, even if you're only swaying, trust me, it goes a
- 3:58long way and will make you feel better in the end.
- 4:00And here's here's a pricism for today With Parkinson's, the
- 4:04future is a wild card, but so is your capacity to adapt and to
- 4:09find new joys, even when the old ones slip away.
- 4:13Let me ask you this. What's the most shocking or
- 4:16unexpected part of your Parkinson's journey?
- 4:18And if you're willing, share it in the comments because someone
- 4:21out there is facing it right now for the first time and your
- 4:23story could be the lifelong that lifeline that they need.
- 4:27And if you want more support, more real talk, more, more
- 4:30community, hit subscribe and join our little family here.
- 4:33It's amazing. People here are amazing.
- 4:36The comments are amazing. I love, I love, love, love, love
- 4:40this community. So here's another thing.
- 4:44My symptoms haven't gotten worse, right?
- 4:47They've gotten creative, you know, one year was tremoring,
- 4:51then it was freezing, then came, now it's coming to facial
- 4:53masking. And the day that I saw this
- 4:55group photo and I realized my smile was gone, that hit me like
- 4:59a ton of bricks, right? I didn't just lose an
- 5:01expression. I lost a, a piece of how I
- 5:03connected with the world. And it took me a while, a long
- 5:06while. But those moments are forcing me
- 5:08to reach out to others who get it, like you.
- 5:11And I've learned it's OK to grieve and it's OK to ask for
- 5:14help and it's OK to miss the old you.
- 5:16It really is, you know, someone wrote wrote me one time someone
- 5:21wrote me, you know, from the channel and they said I used to
- 5:24hide my symptoms. But when I finally talked about
- 5:26them, my family became my biggest cheerleaders.
- 5:29If you ever found support in an unexpected place, you'll find
- 5:36it. But you won't find it unless you
- 5:37talk about it. OK, you won't.
- 5:41Here's a tip. Document changes, right?
- 5:45Not just for you, sorry. Document your changes.
- 5:50Not just for your doctor, but for yourself.
- 5:52I talk a lot about this and you're probably getting sick and
- 5:55tired of me saying this, but you have to start.
- 5:58Generally you have to write things down.
- 6:00And if you don't like writing them, speak them into your notes
- 6:02app on your phone or or or or turn anything on and just record
- 6:06yourself. But I always tell you to keep
- 6:08notes and a little least like journals for your doctor, right?
- 6:13Any changes like document them right?
- 6:15Here is a change today. And then what were what led to
- 6:18that change? What led up?
- 6:19How did you sleep, what you ate right?
- 6:20So how did, how did you take your meds?
- 6:22How did, how, how are you? How did you take your meds
- 6:25today? How did you sleep?
- 6:26What you eat, right, little, little notes.
- 6:28And then what happened, right? But I always tell you to keep
- 6:31that for your for your doctor, But I want you to also think
- 6:34about it for yourself. You know, keeping that a
- 6:36journal, right? Or these few notes on your
- 6:38phone. That's what helps you spot
- 6:41patterns, right? And it's a reminder that every
- 6:43phase is temporary. See, there's the other thing
- 6:46too. If you write them down and spot
- 6:48the changes, there's things to look back and say, huh, look at
- 6:51that. Look at what was happening that
- 6:52week, but it's not happening anymore this week.
- 6:54So then you can start looking at things as a net right now thing
- 6:58rather than the rest of my life thing.
- 7:00OK. And let yourself feel
- 7:06everything. Let me say that again.
- 7:08Let yourself feel everything. Long term Parkinson's isn't just
- 7:14physical, it's mental. It's mental and it's emotional.
- 7:17It's a marathon and it's not a Sprint.
- 7:19And there are days that I feel angry, absolutely.
- 7:22And there's days I feel proud. And there's days I've completely
- 7:25broken down in the car after a rough doctor's appointment.
- 7:29You know, one day I was had a tough appointment, right where
- 7:32nothing seemed to go right. And I sat in my parked car and I
- 7:36just let the tears come. And I remember the stranger was
- 7:39walking by and knocked on my window and handed me a tissue.
- 7:44Didn't say a word, just gave me a look that kind of like said
- 7:47like, Hey, I see you. And you know, sometimes it's
- 7:52that smallest kindness that pulls it just pulls you back to
- 7:56hope. And it just, it did something to
- 8:00me in that moment. I was, I know I can't describe
- 8:03it, but it was just, I felt different.
- 8:05And I was like, oh, you know what?
- 8:07And anyway, that person knows who they were.
- 8:10I didn't know them. It was just random.
- 8:12But it, it, it was incredible. It was incredible.
- 8:16So let yourself feel and let remember, I said, let yourself
- 8:19feel everything, anger, grief, joy, relief, right?
- 8:23And if you need to cry, cry. And if you need to laugh at
- 8:25yourself, do it. Your emotions aren't wrong,
- 8:28they're just real. You know, over the years, over
- 8:34the years, like, I don't know, just people, people have helped,
- 8:39right? Helped me adapt and find meaning
- 8:41in places that I didn't expect that this community, this
- 8:44channel, this podcast is helping me.
- 8:47You know, it's just, I just did never expected any of this,
- 8:50right? But it's helping me find meaning
- 8:52and it's, it's crazy. And you know, I've gotten
- 8:54advice, I've gotten laughter and honestly, a sense of family that
- 8:59I wouldn't trade for anything. And so it's amazing.
- 9:02How about this? What's the best piece of advice
- 9:04that or support that you've received?
- 9:07You know, let's fill up the comments with wisdom and
- 9:09encouragement for each other. That would be awesome, right?
- 9:11And if you haven't yet, if you haven't yet and you don't have
- 9:14community, there's community here.
- 9:16But you can also join the support group, right?

- 9:21around the world, I promise you, there's probably a support group
- 9:23there that you can join either virtually or in person.

- 9:28comfortable with or not, check with my inner circle.

- 9:33it's like ours, my support group.
- 9:35And you're welcome to be part of it.
- 9:36And you can see the link in the description below if you'd want,
- 9:39but it's really important to have community.
- 9:42Really, really important to have community.
- 9:43And I'll say that over and over again.

- 10:09surprise and one story at a time.
- 10:13And here I'm going to leave you with this with Parkinson's, your
