- 0:20be safe for work. Hello and welcome to another episode of The Millionaire Dentist.
- 0:27I am your host Jared Bridgeman. Casey Hires is out at the moment.
- 0:30He is working with some clients at the moment. So I brought in
- 0:33Steve Levy Pipes, the man with the Golden voice. Steve, how are
- 0:36you, hey, Jared? How are you doing doing great? Steve?
- 0:39I bring you in at the end of every year for something we call it
- 0:43the tax that your end tax wrap up. And these are things that practice
- 0:48owners and business owners in general should probably keep in mind as the year winds
- 0:52down. Yeah. Absolutely, So let me ask you a lot of a
- 0:56lot of practice owners and stuff we'll give out holiday bonus is to their employees.
- 1:03Can you kind of walk me through what needs to be done with that?
- 1:06Yeah, this is about the time when you see practice owners paying out
- 1:11bonuses, and you can't just sort of give them give it to them and
- 1:18that's the end of the story. Because the relationship between you as the owner
- 1:23and your employee is an employer employee relationship, So any payment that you give
- 1:30them really is compensation. So this may this also could this will include non
- 1:36cash payments or whatever as well a gift of some sort or yeah, gift
- 1:41cards typically, So what we recommend one of two things, but they both
- 1:48should be considered for it. You can obviously just give them a bonus through
- 1:53their regular payroll system, not something we commonly see as far as bonuses,
- 2:00because gift cards or cash is typically what we see. So in that second
- 2:06instance, what we recommend is that you give them the money no problem,
- 2:12and then report the people that received that money or gifts report that to your
- 2:20payroll provider so that they can do what's called grossing up for taxes, which
- 2:24means that the net amount they receive is still the same. They still receive
- 2:30that amount, but there are Social Security and Medicare taxes on that amount,
- 2:36so essentially it brings that amount higher as far as reported in their compensation.
- 2:43To reflect that you're kind of covering their Social Security and Medicare withholding. Is
- 2:47there a minimum where that would take effect or is at any in all?
- 2:53It's really any and all, there's no because, like I said, it
- 2:58is compensation considered compensation no matter what amount. There's really not a thing called
- 3:05gifts to your employee because of that relationship that it's for typically services given at
- 3:12the time or even prior. You said, it's not as often that you
- 3:15see them. Just do like a monetary bonus through the payroll system. Between
- 3:21those kind of two options you show, is there an easier or less complicated
- 3:25path, Yeah, certainly. The first option just saying hey, here's whatever
- 3:30amount, like a thousand dollars bonus, it's compensation, so it's going to
- 3:34have withholding, that's already kind of autonatically taken care of. Yeah, it's
- 3:37already taken care of the other one. And so with the second option of
- 3:42just kind of giving the money or gifts, the best suggestion there is to
- 3:46let your payroll provider know as ahead of time as possible so that they can
- 3:51not cram to get that in, especially since it's usually given at the end
- 3:55of the year and that has to be reported on the w two and everything
- 4:00with it being if it's done through payroll like that, would it be taxed
- 4:03as a bonus then to with the slightly higher rates? Yeah, most likely?
- 4:09Okay, ye, Steve, okay. Keeping them with the holiday theme,
- 4:13a lot of companies are gearing up to within the next couple of weeks
- 4:17do a holiday party. Now ours is in week and a half. That's
- 4:20right. I'm pretty stoked about that. I absolutely can't wait to make our
- 4:24owner buy meal kinds of nice food and drinks. But Steve, how does
- 4:30how does the holiday party work with with taxes? And I'm assuming we walk
- 4:35me through that, you know, yeah, you know the words. So
- 4:38it's kind of the exception to a lot of rules in what you can actually
- 4:42write off for meals and entertainment when you have a holiday party. The normal
- 4:49rule is you can't write off entertainment and you only get fifty percent of what
- 4:54you write off for meals. Well, this is this is a different situation.
- 4:59It's a holiday part already, it gets one hundred percent right off for
- 5:02both and so it's it's and you don't just have to have it during this
- 5:09time. It's really right, So we can have like the rockets show up
- 5:14whatever, you know, that would be fast. I heard that's actually happening,
- 5:17but that would be really great. But anyway, so and and it
- 5:21doesn't just it's not just restricted to holiday parties. It can be company parties
- 5:27of like summer parties or that kind of thing. Now, I can't just
- 5:30a standard a standard dinner with your department. Yeah, would wouldn't. Uh
- 5:34so, No, not that. It's got to be kind of a company
- 5:38wide occasion, which can be a brilliant any time. But holiday is usually
- 5:43what we see around that time. But it's the exception to a lot of
- 5:46rules, which actually we'll get into. Okay, that's the next topic.
- 5:50But yeah, go crazy, you'll get a hundred percent right, all right,
- 5:55So next up would be you'd mentioned that outside of the company holiday parties
- 6:00and then one hundred percent tax right off with those there is you said,
- 6:04usually like a fifty percent thing with just meals in general. So you said
- 6:11the notes you wrote me, so I know what to ask. That there
- 6:13was a deduction change in for twenty twenty three weeks. That's right. So
- 6:15it had been for several years now since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that
- 6:24specifically for purchases from restaurants that you got to write off one hundred percent of
- 6:31the meals that you purchased from restaurants, take out in person, whatever,
- 6:38not groceries that wasn't part of it. But starting in twenty twenty three,
- 6:43that's reverted back to just the fifty percent right off rule, which obviously not
- 6:50great, but it's still something. Yeah, absolutely, I mean it's still
- 6:54available. Like I said, the holiday party is an exception for that.
- 6:58But you know, we are a proactive firm here, and so when that
- 7:03that changed, I know we probably reached out to our clients and let them
- 7:06know. But is there is there anybody you think out there that's going to
- 7:10get caught not knowing about that? I would say, I mean, because
- 7:15it's been the rule for you know, a few years now, since that
- 7:19act around twenty eighteen. So it's it's those things where you probably shouldn't have
- 7:26bet your eggs on plus your best on them, being like, well,
- 7:29my go one hundred percent of this back, right, So you did a
- 7:30dinner every every week? Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely, so,
- 7:34but it could if you're having a large meals expense, typically you'll get that
- 7:41fifty percent haircut. A lot of states were kind of doing it too.
- 7:45They were like, you know, sure, federal law, but we kind
- 7:47of liked the old way, so we're only going to give you fIF percent.
- 7:49You had to make an annoying adjustment for a state to do that.
- 7:56But now everybody's kind of in sync, federal and the state and back to
- 8:00the old ways. Does that make it easier on your end when you're when
- 8:03you're doing it's it's fine either way. You know, we know what to
- 8:09put where and what's am because I don't, So I appreciate your expertise when
- 8:16you come in here and whenever I guilt you and to do my taxes next
- 8:20time. It'd be nice. With twenty twenty four coming up, you know,
- 8:22we you and I had sat down and talked about the irs and retirement
- 8:26changes, things like that. Do you mind going through just a quick kind
- 8:31of cover of a cover of the inflationary changes for twenty twenty four? Yeah,
- 8:35no problem. So, like we talked about, it wasn't a boost
- 8:41as much as from twenty two to twenty three, as far as limits that
- 8:46you can defer for four one K, but it's still some things did increase.
- 8:50So in twenty twenty three, you could defer for four one K purposes
- 8:56twenty two five hundred four or for your form one K twenty twenty four.
- 9:03It's just a five hundred dollars boost up to twenty three thousand versus twenty two
- 9:09was like around twenty thousand, so it was you know, it went up
- 9:13but not as much. And one of these changes, let me ask you
- 9:16real quick. With my four oh one K, I went into the computer
- 9:20and I started diverting all your funds into mine. Okay, fine, I
- 9:26mean that really be very created to catch up. It sounds like a kind
- 9:30of an office space. Touch a deal. It's just a diversion. Fine,
- 9:33it's just incremental. So now the catch up contributions, which you know
- 9:41I'm catching up, you're catching up to take mine. This is after fifty
- 9:43five that's right, Yes, you need fifty fifty fifty Yes, so that
- 9:48remained the same. That's still seventy five hundred. And those are the two
- 9:54main ones. There's also, like we mentioned last time, a boost in
- 9:58how much much compensation can be considered for the company match it's It was three
- 10:05hundred and thirty thousand in twenty twenty three and in twenty twenty four, it
- 10:09boosted up to three hundred and forty five thousand. If you need more information
- 10:16about this, listeners, there is an episode where Steve and I dive really
- 10:18into the nitty gritty of that just a couple of weeks ago. Let me
- 10:22ask you, you have written down your federal reckets. Yeah, those who
- 10:26have kind of shifted a bit, they have. It was a big boost
- 10:30in from twenty twenty two to twenty twenty three, and the change really was
- 10:35that more income was taxed at lower rates, and so really that means an
- 10:41overall tax hit was less. That's why there was a bigger boost from twenty
- 10:48two to twenty three. There still is a boost in from twenty three to
- 10:52twenty four, which just came out in November. So, for example,
- 10:56the jump of on the limit of the taxable income for the twenty four percent
- 11:03bracket, that jumped twenty thousand dollars, So twenty thousand more is it the
- 11:09twenty four percent bracket versus the thirty two percent bracket, So that's it was
- 11:15twenty four thousand between twenty two and twenty three. So it did go down,
- 11:22but that difference between the thirty two and twenty four percent I mean,
- 11:28that's a big rate difference, one of the bigger ones in the whole bracket
- 11:31system. There was also a jump in what's in the thirty two percent bracket
- 11:39versus thirty five percent. That increased twenty five percent versus thirty thousand, and
- 11:46all this means is really more income tax at a lower rate. And so
- 11:52if you had the same income in one year versus the next, the next
- 11:56one would be less. Next next tax, the tax would be less,
- 12:01and that'll be starting in next year like January first, that's right, you
- 12:05know, it's December. This is the time of year where a lot of
- 12:09owners out there will be like, oh, shoot, I should probably make
- 12:13some in of your purchases here real quick, let's get some stuff in here,
- 12:18and sometimes try to use that tax code. The tax what's that tax
- 12:24called. It's section one seventy nine. Section one sevent nine, which I
- 12:28mean, if if you need the equipment is very beneficial if somebody actually need
- 12:31to use sure, but a lot of people will try to use this as
- 12:35a way to lower their taxes. Can you walk me through into your purchases?
- 12:39So what we generally believe is that you shouldn't make expenses and purchases just
- 12:48to save taxes, because that's kind of chasing things and you lose the money
- 12:52from the the amount that you're you're spending for it. Now, if you
- 12:56need it, by all means, go for it before the end of the
- 13:01year. It's not it's like, if you actually need it, sit down
- 13:03and think about it. Yeah, I mean a business decision versus just oh,
- 13:07I just want to minimize my tax just not pay the government. And
- 13:11I saw a video the other day on TikTok this intern. They gave the
- 13:16intern a company card and he spent eighteen thousand dollars on a bag, a
- 13:18birkin bag. I think, okay, but yeah, so I wouldn't do
- 13:22that. Yeah, that's kind of rough. Now, one rule you have
- 13:24to make sure you follow is that you're not going to get the benefit in
- 13:28twenty twenty three unless you place it in service by the end of the year.
- 13:33So that's really the So even if you paid for in twenty twenty three,
- 13:37if you haven't used it yet, it doesn't count exactly. So if
- 13:41you January fourth, you finally put it into into into motion, it would
- 13:46go in twenty twenty four, that's right, which you wouldn't get that,
- 13:48you know, savings, the time value of money saving. It'd be another
- 13:52year, it would. So if you're going to get it, if you're
- 13:54going to buy that equipment, make sure you're getting it delivered in some way.
- 14:00Are you using it? So? Steve, as always, you come
- 14:03in here and you just kill it. Is there anything else you'd like to
- 14:07add before we wrap up the tax wrap up? Well, just think about
- 14:13the various topics we talked about, and especially the bonuses one. We often
- 14:18see that one where people believe, here's the money, we're good right now,
- 14:22there's some reporting there by all means, throw the big holiday party,
- 14:26do all the meals expenses you want, but just note the last deduction and
- 14:33don't fall for all the end of your purchase sales pitches for that because make
- 14:39sure you need that. Okay, thank you listeners, We really appreciate you
