- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. I got a couple more thoughts about what's
- 0:23Speaker 1: going on at Penn State. We'll get to that in
- 0:25Speaker 1: a minute, but we are coming off of some Monday
- 0:27Speaker 1: Night Football that was interesting to me. Buffalo lost to
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Atlanta Falcons, which... I mean, of course, and obviously,
- 0:39Speaker 1: it's the kind of thing that, you know, may people
- 0:43Speaker 1: lose respect for you. But the Falcons are actually not
- 0:45Speaker 1: so bad this year. And I've talked about this on
- 0:50Speaker 1: this show before, and I need to say this again,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and I think that this is something that people lose
- 0:55Speaker 1: and forget. There is nothing better. All right, so, okay,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I will say this two things. There are two things
- 1:05Speaker 1: in football that nothing tops. One on offense, one on defense.
- 1:10Speaker 1: On defense, it is a broader category, which is the
- 1:15Speaker 1: heat-seeking missile, right? There are many different types of heat-seeking missiles.
- 1:22Speaker 1: But when there is a heat-seeking missile, there's nothing more
- 1:25Speaker 1: fun than to watch a heat-seeking missile. So Lawrence Taylor, obviously,
- 1:28Speaker 1: is an example of a heat-seeking missile. Ray Lewis is
- 1:33Speaker 1: a slightly different aesthetic, but a heat-seeking missile. Troy Palamalu,
- 1:38Speaker 1: who's like a decathlete, sort of heat-seeking missile. He is
- 1:41Speaker 1: a heat-seeking missile. Michael Parsons, I think, fits in the category. Like,
- 1:45Speaker 1: it's one thing when a guy is really good, and
- 1:47Speaker 1: it can be kind of fun when it's like Reggie White,
- 1:50Speaker 1: who's not quite a heat-seeking missile, but Reggie White is like,
- 1:52Speaker 1: I'm so strong, and I never lift weights. You know
- 1:56Speaker 1: what I mean? Like there's those sorts of guys, but
- 1:58Speaker 1: the heat-seeking missile is one thing. But number one, at
- 2:02Speaker 1: the top of the list, something that a whole generation
- 2:05Speaker 1: of youth really don't know nothing about, and that is the,
- 2:11Speaker 1: oh my God, I can't believe how good you are
- 2:14Speaker 1: running back. Just flat out, I can't believe how talented
- 2:20Speaker 1: you are. And Ryan, that guy's name is B. John Robinson.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, when you see him breaking that 81-yard run,
- 2:31Speaker 2: you feel like he's able to do that every time.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I mean, you've gotten glimpses of that with peak Saquon,
- 2:36Speaker 2: but there isn't really... Obviously when Derrick Henry is really rolling,
- 2:41Speaker 2: but you don't see a lot of that in the
- 2:42Speaker 2: last five years.
- 2:43Speaker 1: So like with Derrick Henry, it's a slightly different thing
- 2:45Speaker 1: because he's just so big and strong, right? But he's
- 2:49Speaker 1: big and strong and obviously not slow, like fast. I
- 2:53Speaker 1: don't want to say adequate speed because that's not fair,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but he's not Earl Campbell. Have you ever looked at
- 2:58Speaker 1: college clips of Earl Campbell?
- 2:59Speaker 2: It's been a long time.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Okay. So NFL clips of Earl Campbell or Earl Campbell
- 3:04Speaker 1: putting his head in people's chest and running through them.
- 3:06Speaker 1: What you don't realize until you watch college Earl Campbell
- 3:10Speaker 1: clips is just how fast he was because college Earl
- 3:12Speaker 1: Campbell clips are him running by people.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Like like like they couldn't even get close enough for
- 3:17Speaker 1: him to do the actual Earl Campbell stuff. Right. Derrick
- 3:21Speaker 1: Henry at every level felt more like pro Earl Campbell,
- 3:24Speaker 1: but not the guy that just runs away from you.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Bijan look like he's whatever those, whatever it is that
- 3:30Speaker 1: you want. Like, if we could have gone back to
- 3:32Speaker 1: the days of the 30 carry running back, Bijan's the
- 3:36Speaker 1: guy everybody wants to be like. Like, he's that dude.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Can you imagine if you had Bijan playing with, oh,
- 3:46Speaker 1: how about this? Not even playing with. Do the Falcons
- 3:48Speaker 1: play against the Cowboys this year? If so, I can't wait.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Some dude named Rico, just took 30 carries against the
- 3:58Speaker 1: Make-A-Wish Foundation and ran for damn near 200 yards. Damn,
- 4:01Speaker 1: they don't play. Can the Falcons trade Bijan to somebody
- 4:04Speaker 1: who played the Cowboys this year? Because he might run
- 4:07Speaker 1: for 400 yards, right? Man, I love watching that dude play.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I'm all for that narcotic. Don't get me wrong. I'll
- 4:14Speaker 1: also make this other point about the Falcons as I
- 4:15Speaker 1: have gone on this detour that I did not expect.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I think we all generally agree that the Falcons overdrafted
- 4:24Speaker 1: by position with a handful of guys, right? I think
- 4:28Speaker 1: we felt that way about Pennix. We felt that way about, well,
- 4:31Speaker 1: y'all felt that way about Bijan. I was drafting that dude.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Even Drake London to a degree, but Kyle Pitts, I guess,
- 4:44Speaker 1: is the other one that people talked about. Hey, man,
- 4:46Speaker 1: that offense full of those overdrafted guys... looked pretty good.
- 4:50Speaker 1: They didn't score enough points, but they looked pretty good.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Sometimes you got to do it. But anyway, the lesson
- 4:55Speaker 1: I was taking from that game is that Buffalo is good,
- 4:58Speaker 1: not great. Because while their defense is not the Make-A-Wish foundation,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you can run the ball on them pretty easily. They
- 5:06Speaker 1: were out there. The Bears and the Commandos, that looked
- 5:10Speaker 1: like a heaping helping of aight. They're just aight. And
- 5:16Speaker 1: as I look around it, The league got a bunch
- 5:20Speaker 1: of aight right now. Think about this for a second.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I'm not alone in this, and maybe not all of
- 5:27Speaker 1: you agree, but I do feel like a lot of
- 5:29Speaker 1: you do. Kansas City beat America's team. That unfortunately is
- 5:36Speaker 1: giving a little bit more aight right now than I
- 5:38Speaker 1: would prefer. Plus, that little janky suspension against Brian Brandt.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I mean, come on, man. That dude had a helmet on.
- 5:48Speaker 1: He just slapped him in the face. But anyway, they
- 5:52Speaker 1: look aight. But the Chiefs, who, it wasn't just but
- 5:55Speaker 1: a couple weeks ago, we were like, ooh, I don't know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I think the whole thing is over. I am convinced
- 5:59Speaker 1: they're going to the Super Bowl now. At three and three. Why?
- 6:04Speaker 1: Because the rest of the league is just aight. Right?
- 6:08Speaker 1: You know what the rest of the league is?
- 6:13Speaker 2: I believe, as Kim Ward put it, to keep it
- 6:15Speaker 2: a buck, they're ass.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yes. There's a lot of that. I was going with
- 6:21Speaker 1: what the kids mean when they say mid.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, okay.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Which is, by the way, fairly synonymous with ass in
- 6:27Speaker 1: the way that they talk about it. But there's a
- 6:29Speaker 1: lot of keister in the NFL right now. NFL got
- 6:33Speaker 1: a lot of keister. Name the great team. You can't. Again,
- 6:37Speaker 1: the team with the best point differential league by far
- 6:39Speaker 1: is the Indianapolis Colts. I'm not ready, right? Are you ready?
- 6:44Speaker 2: No.
- 6:44Speaker 1: No. Let me tell you something. If I can't believe
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's Sam Darnold yet, if I'm still holding out on
- 6:52Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield, I don't know what Daniel Jones got to do.
- 6:55Speaker 3: No.
- 6:56Speaker 2: No, I'm not having. I won't do it.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I can't believe it. Yeah. I just refuse. I just refuse.
- 7:05Speaker 1: But we were getting ready to do this show today,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and I was looking at the standings. Do you realize
- 7:11Speaker 1: that 25% of the NFL right now is keistered? A
- 7:16Speaker 1: full on 25%. The Dolphins, the Jets, the Bengals, the Ravens,
- 7:23Speaker 1: the Browns, the Titans, the Raiders, and the Saints. Didn't
- 7:31Speaker 1: forget about you guys. Keister. Everywhere you look is Keister.
- 7:38Speaker 1: The AFC North is the Steelers and the Keister. That's right.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Everybody in that division right now stinks. And the Titans.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Now that's Keister. They just fired their coach, by the way.
- 7:58Speaker 1: They fired Brian Callahan. They made Mike McCoy the interim coach.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And you got to wonder how much it is Keister
- 8:07Speaker 1: in the NFL right now got some nervous coaches. Because
- 8:10Speaker 1: once the first one goes, all y'all are on notice, right? Like,
- 8:13Speaker 1: it just, it feels like it goes that way. I
- 8:17Speaker 1: don't think the Jets can afford to fire Aaron Glenn
- 8:20Speaker 1: in the middle of the season, but damn it, he
- 8:22Speaker 1: trying to see. I can't believe Mike McDaniel still worked there.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I feel like every time we do a show, I
- 8:29Speaker 1: need to offer the caveat of what time that show
- 8:31Speaker 1: was recorded and that by the time you hear this,
- 8:33Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel might get fired because it just feels totally
- 8:36Speaker 1: like it's on the board. As a big fan of
- 8:39Speaker 1: both Beat Carol and Geno Smith, it's a little disappointing
- 8:44Speaker 1: how much keesher they are, but to be fair, That
- 8:47Speaker 1: is a lot of individual keister and collective keister. That's like,
- 8:51Speaker 1: what was that quote you sent me, Ryan, about the
- 8:53Speaker 1: Titans that the only good player they got is Jeffrey Simmons?
- 8:58Speaker 2: I believe one of the Raiders coaches, I'm going to
- 8:59Speaker 2: pull up the quote now. This might be the worst
- 9:04Speaker 2: team I've seen in the last 25 years. They don't
- 9:06Speaker 2: have any difference makers other than Jeffrey Simmons, and the
- 9:10Speaker 2: whole thing was a total mess.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Ryan, think about two things. Two things before you go, right?
- 9:15Speaker 1: On that. Number one, In the last 25 years, we
- 9:18Speaker 1: have seen not one, but two teams go winless.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Correct.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Okay. Number two, who did you say said that?
- 9:26Speaker 2: A Raiders coach.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Who does he watch every day?
- 9:30Speaker 2: The Raiders.
- 9:31Speaker 1: The Raiders. Every day he watches the Raiders and he
- 9:35Speaker 1: saw that team, it was like, ooh, those guys stink. Like, what? Like,
- 9:43Speaker 1: my buddy Matt in Kentucky, he tells this story. And
- 9:45Speaker 1: if you guys know my buddy Matt, Matt is from,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I believe, Middlesbrough, Kentucky. And he sounds largely like he's
- 9:49Speaker 1: from Middlesbrough, Kentucky, which I find to be just fine.
- 9:52Speaker 1: But he said once that he used to had his
- 9:54Speaker 1: professor this is british cat and they were riding around
- 9:57Speaker 1: somewhere and they were somewhere in deepest darkest north carolina
- 10:00Speaker 1: and they pulled up on somebody and the guy asked
- 10:03Speaker 1: matt where he was from and matt says well you
- 10:06Speaker 1: know i'm from bell county and he said the guy
- 10:09Speaker 1: matt does a super d-bag saying he's like you're from
- 10:12Speaker 1: bell county oh Y'all got some real rednecks down there.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And he said that British guy looked up and was
- 10:21Speaker 1: mortified at the idea that this man that they were
- 10:25Speaker 1: talking to who sounded like that believed that there was
- 10:28Speaker 1: a place that had a greater quality of rurality than
- 10:33Speaker 1: the place that he was in. He just couldn't believe it. Anyway,
- 10:36Speaker 1: that's how I think that Raiders coach had to feel
- 10:39Speaker 1: when he looked up and he saw that there was
- 10:40Speaker 1: somebody even more keister than the guys that he's around
- 10:44Speaker 1: every day but I bring this all up to say
- 10:46Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out what to make of this
- 10:50Speaker 1: like we've got a league right now that doesn't have
- 10:52Speaker 1: any team with a high ceiling and a lot of
- 10:54Speaker 1: teams that seem to be sorry and by the way
- 10:58Speaker 1: sorry Interestingly, enough of these teams actually have quarterbacks, right?
- 11:04Speaker 1: Like the Ravens have a quarterback, the Bengals have a quarterback. Now, granted,
- 11:08Speaker 1: part of why these guys are sorry is because they
- 11:10Speaker 1: don't have their quarterbacks, but they also look fairly sorry
- 11:13Speaker 1: when they did have their quarterbacks. The Dolphins don't have
- 11:16Speaker 1: a quarterback. The Jets don't have a quarterback. The Titans
- 11:19Speaker 1: feel like they have a quarterback. The Raiders have a quarterback.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Their quarterback is a player right now, and it doesn't
- 11:25Speaker 1: look like they have a quarterback in the future. And
- 11:27Speaker 1: the Saints... do not have a quarterback and there is
- 11:31Speaker 1: no help on the way. It's not there. Watch college football.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Listen to the names that people are talking about. Somebody's
- 11:41Speaker 1: going to probably do it with Carson Beck because at
- 11:43Speaker 1: the very least he has looked the part. And I
- 11:44Speaker 1: don't mean that in a patronizing way. He's big, strong,
- 11:46Speaker 1: and it looks good when he throws the football. Maybe
- 11:49Speaker 1: that's going to be the guy that you wind up with,
- 11:51Speaker 1: but no help is coming. But we got a league
- 11:54Speaker 1: right now that is just really largely populated with by
- 11:58Speaker 1: a bunch of mid, and then a.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Lot, a lot of Reggie.
- 12:06Speaker 1: It's almost a lot of Reggie. It's almost offensive because
- 12:10Speaker 1: if you hit the Reggie hard enough and for long enough,
- 12:13Speaker 1: it'll do the job. You can't smoke enough Titans to
- 12:18Speaker 1: get you where you want to go. You can't roll
- 12:21Speaker 1: up enough Browns to make you feel good. All you're
- 12:24Speaker 1: going to do is get a headache. The NFL, 25% headache.
- 12:30Speaker 1: All right, so we were talking about Penn State and
- 12:41Speaker 1: what happened with firing James Franklin. And my immediate conclusion
- 12:47Speaker 1: was that, wow, this is crazy because nothing like this
- 12:49Speaker 1: has ever happened. And then I got to thinking about
- 12:51Speaker 1: all the things that I know about kind of sports,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and was like, okay, I understand why this move was made.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Then I found out that his buyout had offset language,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and it's like, oh, okay, this may not even cost
- 13:05Speaker 1: enough money. Franklin's agent didn't do right by him. Jimbo
- 13:08Speaker 1: Fisher had a $ 75 million, I think it was 75,
- 13:11Speaker 1: but either way, he had a lump sum buyout. Franklin
- 13:14Speaker 1: don't got a lump sum. Franklin's got one of those
- 13:16Speaker 1: where they get to trick it out. Like, that was... You, you, you, you, you,
- 13:21Speaker 1: you should have called somebody else.
- 13:22Speaker 2: They get to trick it out. And also he has
- 13:25Speaker 2: to go look for another job.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He does.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:27Speaker 1: And see, that wouldn't be if it was the lump sum,
- 13:28Speaker 1: it wouldn't be the case.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Right. Right.
- 13:30Speaker 1: So since it goes that way, you have the offset
- 13:32Speaker 1: language says he's got to at least try. And let
- 13:34Speaker 1: me tell you about trying to find a job in
- 13:38Speaker 1: this economy. See what I don't know about those provisions is,
- 13:42Speaker 1: does he have to try to find a job even
- 13:44Speaker 1: if it's beneath his stature?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not sure what the language on that is, but, like,
- 13:50Speaker 2: you know, I'm sure he doesn't have to just take
- 13:52Speaker 2: any job.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Right, but, like, if Purdue comes calling, are you telling
- 13:55Speaker 1: me he has to take that?
- 13:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 1: You know, just know that if they're on Vanderbilt, it's like,
- 14:01Speaker 1: come back home.
- 14:01Speaker 2: He's already done Vanderbilt once. You can't make him do
- 14:03Speaker 2: that again.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, like Arkansas, would he have to do that? Like,
- 14:06Speaker 1: do you have to just take any old goddamn job?
- 14:09Speaker 1: Because I don't know. I don't know about you, brother.
- 14:11Speaker 1: but I've watched quite a few people look for jobs.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Like James Franklin every day. You just go see him
- 14:17Speaker 1: on Twitter with a newspaper and a highlighter with a
- 14:19Speaker 1: picture on Instagram looking for another job. They didn't say
- 14:22Speaker 1: it had to be a coaching job. It could just
- 14:24Speaker 1: be a job. We're going to see James Franklin out
- 14:27Speaker 1: here and volunteering with four people. Out there with a ladle.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Make that happen.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Yeah, but the move. I've talked about this all the time.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Once it stops being fun, then people don't want it anymore.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Also talk to a few more people. I asked the
- 14:44Speaker 1: question on the show, who the money was at Penn state.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And a big part of the money on Penn state
- 14:49Speaker 1: is Terry Pegula, the owner of the Buffalo bills. And
- 14:52Speaker 1: my understanding is James Franklin didn't really, uh, make the
- 14:55Speaker 1: relationship with him, which I find to be very interesting
- 15:00Speaker 1: because James Franklin moves like a dude that knows who
- 15:03Speaker 1: it is that you got to be friends with and
- 15:05Speaker 1: who you got to be cool with. And I would
- 15:06Speaker 1: have thought that that would have been job one. Um,
- 15:10Speaker 1: In that case, like in the end, James Franklin, in
- 15:18Speaker 1: the end, and I think I may have mentioned this
- 15:19Speaker 1: briefly on the last show, but I don't think we
- 15:23Speaker 1: think about him in the proper context. And that context
- 15:26Speaker 1: is he's truly the guy that followed the legend. Bill
- 15:31Speaker 1: O'Brien was only there for two years after the Paterno
- 15:35Speaker 1: thing happened. And it was such chaos that like nobody
- 15:38Speaker 1: was expecting Bill O'Brien to get you to the heights
- 15:42Speaker 1: that you had reached under Joe Paterno. I see a
- 15:46Speaker 1: lot of people making the point that Bill O'Brien was
- 15:48Speaker 1: the guy that rebuilt the program at Penn State. And
- 15:52Speaker 1: I just want to point out that, guys, we don't
- 15:55Speaker 1: need to lie. Like, he held it down, but he
- 16:00Speaker 1: left complaining about this, that, and the third and everything
- 16:03Speaker 1: else so he could go back to the NFL. But
- 16:05Speaker 1: you go look at the actual performance of those teams,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and again, it's not his fault. They were decimated by
- 16:09Speaker 1: all kinds of circumstances. But, I mean, they got a
- 16:12Speaker 1: couple of not bad wins here and there, but that
- 16:15Speaker 1: was not, he didn't do that. The dude that got
- 16:19Speaker 1: Penn State fully to the place where you thought about
- 16:22Speaker 1: them the way you used to think about them is Franklin.
- 16:26Speaker 1: He did that. He's going to probably historically go down
- 16:29Speaker 1: as a very important figure in the history of that program.
- 16:33Speaker 1: But I also think he'll probably go down in the
- 16:35Speaker 1: history of that program, probably as some combination of Earl
- 16:40Speaker 1: Bruce and John Cooper at Ohio State, where Cooper, I think,
- 16:47Speaker 1: demonstrated best the capability that Ohio State could be right
- 16:50Speaker 1: back at the top as it had been pre-integration, right?
- 16:54Speaker 1: That they could do that while also consistently falling short
- 16:59Speaker 1: of what they actually wanted it to be. That's where
- 17:02Speaker 1: I think Franklin's going to go. But Franklin also is
- 17:05Speaker 1: your reminder that fit matters. And how well you fit
- 17:11Speaker 1: culturally at a place really matters. And it especially matters
- 17:18Speaker 1: when you need to buy some time. And so on
- 17:22Speaker 1: the front end of that job, Franklin was given some
- 17:25Speaker 1: time as they were recovering from the sanctions and the
- 17:28Speaker 1: scandal and everything else. On the front end, he had
- 17:32Speaker 1: the time. On the back end, he didn't really have
- 17:36Speaker 1: the time. Because from what it sounds like to me,
- 17:41Speaker 1: even though he is a dude that's from Pennsylvania, they
- 17:46Speaker 1: didn't really see him as fit, okay? Now, I know
- 17:51Speaker 1: some of you are raising in your heads a very
- 17:53Speaker 1: obvious question about what you mean by fit. And I'm
- 17:58Speaker 1: not talking about that, but I'm not saying that isn't
- 18:03Speaker 1: part of it. I don't know this situation well enough, right?
- 18:07Speaker 1: But I do know this. Paterno, similar to Bobby Bout
- 18:15Speaker 1: and a handful of other guys, but I think Paterno
- 18:18Speaker 1: is actually the very last of the coaches who more
- 18:27Speaker 1: so fit the archetype of a gym teacher than the
- 18:34Speaker 1: archetype of a CEO, right? So let me make sure
- 18:40Speaker 1: I'm clear about what I'm saying. A guy like Will
- 18:46Speaker 1: Muschamp obviously fits the archetype. Of a gym teacher. Okay.
- 18:53Speaker 5: He's.
- 18:54Speaker 1: You know what? Actually, Ryan. He's the archetype of the
- 18:56Speaker 1: gym teacher. But they might make him the history teacher.
- 18:58Speaker 1: And then you look up and find out that he
- 19:00Speaker 1: actually knows a lot about history.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Oh, I bet Will Muschamp is unironically very into World
- 19:05Speaker 2: War II.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Like just crushing Richard Evans books. You got to be
- 19:10Speaker 2: very careful of the ones who are super into the
- 19:12Speaker 2: Civil War.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Yes.
- 19:14Speaker 2: But the ones who are super into World War II.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Well.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Well, Will is, I believe, in one of those frats.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I can't remember if it's that one or the other one.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Gotcha. I know what you're talking about.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Yes, yes, but he is in one of them. But
- 19:27Speaker 1: I'm trying to... I guess what I'm thinking about is,
- 19:29Speaker 1: or the point that I'm trying to make, is that
- 19:32Speaker 1: Or how about this? This is a better way to
- 19:33Speaker 1: put it. Paterno was a coach before coaches made zillions
- 19:37Speaker 1: of dollars.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And moved with a lifestyle of the old college football
- 19:42Speaker 1: coach that like, oh, lived in the neighborhood where all
- 19:44Speaker 1: the professors lived.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Lived somewhere where he was looked like he was making
- 19:48Speaker 2: five figures, not eight figures.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Where like your address and phone number in the phone book,
- 19:54Speaker 1: like you could just pull up to Joe. And we
- 19:56Speaker 1: realized this when Joe Paterno, when it all went bad
- 19:58Speaker 1: and like the people would pull up in front of
- 19:59Speaker 1: his house with the rallies and stuff like that. He
- 20:01Speaker 1: was the last of those guys where the coach felt really,
- 20:04Speaker 1: really approachable or as part of things. Joe Petrano had
- 20:08Speaker 1: that job for like 50 years, right? The entire archetype
- 20:12Speaker 1: of what it was to be a college football coach
- 20:14Speaker 1: changed while he had that job. It even changed around
- 20:17Speaker 1: him as he was more a figurehead for the program
- 20:19Speaker 1: and they changed everything around it, right? But the truth
- 20:23Speaker 1: is the culture of the place that we're talking about
- 20:29Speaker 1: it seems from a distance to still be largely a
- 20:32Speaker 1: culture that has the expectations of a Joe Paterno football
- 20:37Speaker 1: program in terms of results. And that's also probably what
- 20:41Speaker 1: they want a bit in terms of who the head
- 20:44Speaker 1: coach is, right? LSU. And Ryan, you tell me if
- 20:48Speaker 1: I'm wrong here. Forgive me for keep pulling an onion there,
- 20:50Speaker 1: but you guys would like your coach to be kind
- 20:53Speaker 1: of fun.
- 20:53Speaker 2: It would help.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I mean, even Nick Saban is... maniacal but fun to
- 20:59Speaker 1: watch how maniacal.
- 21:00Speaker 2: He is right he has a personality yes exactly.
- 21:03Speaker 1: There is a personality even if it isn't the most
- 21:06Speaker 1: fun personality all the time there is a personality but
- 21:08Speaker 1: you guys want your coaches to be fun florida they
- 21:11Speaker 1: want their they want their coaches to score points like
- 21:12Speaker 1: everybody has different things that they want from their coaches
- 21:15Speaker 1: but the only way that you ever really know what
- 21:17Speaker 1: a place wants from the coach is if you're kind
- 21:19Speaker 1: of of it And I've done this long way around
- 21:23Speaker 1: to say, go ahead and have the press conference tomorrow
- 21:26Speaker 1: and say you're hiring Matt Rule at the end of
- 21:28Speaker 1: the year. Just go ahead and do it. And here's
- 21:33Speaker 1: the thing that's going to drive James Franklin crazy. They're
- 21:36Speaker 1: going to hire Matt Rule. Matt Rule played at Penn State.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And we'll get to it, but I want to be clear.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I think Matt Rule's a very good college football coach.
- 21:47Speaker 1: He's of the place. He knows how the place moves.
- 21:51Speaker 1: And he has a little bit more personality-wise of a,
- 21:57Speaker 1: seems like more of the approachable college football coach, less
- 22:01Speaker 1: the star college football coach, a little bit closer to
- 22:05Speaker 1: the teacher slash minister. You know, he's the son of
- 22:10Speaker 1: a minister, right? Like he's a little closer to that
- 22:13Speaker 1: archetype of coach. The only thing about that is, He's
- 22:21Speaker 1: got the same problem as James Franklin. He wins a
- 22:26Speaker 1: lot of games. Just not always the ones that you
- 22:31Speaker 1: want him to win. That's the knock on that rule
- 22:35Speaker 1: is performance against top 20 opponents. However, however, however, there
- 22:42Speaker 1: is a giant counterpoint there. And by the way, Ryan,
- 22:45Speaker 1: We need to save this, what we're recording now, for
- 22:48Speaker 1: when they do actually hire Matt Rule. And we can
- 22:50Speaker 1: just go ahead and run it verbatim. Like, everything will
- 22:53Speaker 1: be the same. Do you know where Matt Rule did
- 22:56Speaker 1: all this stuff we're talking about, guys, before he got
- 22:59Speaker 1: to Nebraska? It was at Temple and at Baylor. And
- 23:02Speaker 1: not just, Baylor's a generally awful job. Don't let the
- 23:06Speaker 1: schools in Texas shit fool you. It's in Waco.
- 23:09Speaker 2: And it's... You're at best the... Fourth most important program
- 23:13Speaker 2: in that state.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Maybe it's small and it's a school where they didn't
- 23:17Speaker 1: have no, they didn't have school dances until 1997. And
- 23:20Speaker 1: that is not an exaggeration. In my life, my daddy was,
- 23:24Speaker 1: they can't even dance at Baylor.
- 23:26Speaker 2: You would have heard school in the footloose town.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Yes, that was exactly it. But Matt Rule turned Temple
- 23:34Speaker 1: into a winner. He turned Baylor into a winner. Nebraska
- 23:38Speaker 1: and Penn State are somewhat similar in the sense that
- 23:41Speaker 1: it'll never be what it was at Nebraska in the
- 23:43Speaker 1: way that I don't think it'll ever be what it
- 23:45Speaker 1: was at Penn State. But what it can be at
- 23:48Speaker 1: Penn State is greater than what it can be at Nebraska. Right.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I think that that's all fair. But we have never.
- 23:57Speaker 1: It's one thing to put a program together. It is
- 23:59Speaker 1: another thing to keep one together. And we have never
- 24:02Speaker 1: seen Matt Rule keep one together. Like we saw James Franklin.
- 24:06Speaker 1: We didn't know this really about him at Vanderbilt either.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Could you keep it together? Because he put it to
- 24:10Speaker 1: places that we had never seen. But could you keep
- 24:13Speaker 1: it there?
- 24:13Speaker 2: 12 years at Penn State is a lifetime in college
- 24:16Speaker 2: football coaching.
- 24:17Speaker 1: It is. And I think he kept it. I think
- 24:19Speaker 1: he did. I mean, 34 and eight. That's the most recent.
- 24:22Speaker 2: They were in the top five.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Two weeks ago.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Two weeks ago. Right.
- 24:26Speaker 1: So like he got it there. And it's fair to
- 24:28Speaker 1: say that he demonstrated an ability to keep it there.
- 24:31Speaker 1: That's the question that we're going to have on Matt Rule.
- 24:34Speaker 1: And understand, there are some guys who, for whatever reason,
- 24:38Speaker 1: can't do that. Lou Holtz was historically a great example
- 24:44Speaker 1: of a guy who, at every job, got it there
- 24:48Speaker 1: and could not keep it there. Even with Notre Dame,
- 24:51Speaker 1: he kept it there for a little longer than he
- 24:53Speaker 1: had in Arkansas, but could not keep it there. NC State,
- 24:57Speaker 1: NC State fans famously asked the question, what if Lou
- 24:59Speaker 1: Holtz had stayed? Because Lou Holtz had coached there for
- 25:01Speaker 1: a little while, what our program could have been, and
- 25:03Speaker 1: it would have turned into a different variety of that
- 25:05Speaker 1: same NC State shit that y'all be dealing with at
- 25:08Speaker 1: every point. Lou Holtz, by the way, who got fired,
- 25:11Speaker 1: think about how different the world is. Lou Holtz got
- 25:13Speaker 1: fired in Arkansas, I want to say in 1985. Do
- 25:16Speaker 1: you know why he got fired officially?
- 25:17Speaker 2: I do not.
- 25:18Speaker 1: So it started coming apart football-wise. But remember, I said
- 25:22Speaker 1: Lou Holtz used to be the coach at NC State.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Lou Holtz filmed a campaign ad in his office for
- 25:30Speaker 1: Jesse Helms.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Fired.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Fired. Frank Broyles, Frank Broyles, to be very clear, fired him.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Here's what I find amazing about that story. The idea
- 25:46Speaker 1: that there was a time that campaigning for an overtly
- 25:51Speaker 1: racist Republican could cost you your job in Arkansas. Right. Right?
- 25:57Speaker 1: I mean, keep in mind, this is Bill Clinton's Arkansas. Right.
- 26:00Speaker 1: That we're talking about. But that's how much different the
- 26:02Speaker 1: world is. Back then, you could not get away with
- 26:06Speaker 1: that shit. That was 15 years after, like, full-on integration.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:12Speaker 1: And you could not get away with that. Now you can.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Different world.
- 26:17Speaker 1: But anyway, I don't know if Rule can actually be
- 26:19Speaker 1: the guy to put it together, but it's going to
- 26:21Speaker 1: look funny in the light, and everybody needs to know this,
- 26:24Speaker 1: that they are going to hire somebody whose problem is
- 26:28Speaker 1: that he does the thing or has done the thing
- 26:32Speaker 1: that James Franklin has done. It is not always fair
- 26:35Speaker 1: on his face, but it is an argument to be made.
- 26:38Speaker 1: But the bottom line is Matt Rule is close with
- 26:41Speaker 1: the athletic director. Matt Rule is close with the place.
- 26:45Speaker 1: And they did not fire James Franklin because they were losing.
- 26:49Speaker 1: They fired him because they didn't like how it felt.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And at least for a little while, this is going
- 26:55Speaker 1: to feel a lot better. Football is back and so

- 28:29Speaker 2: college football, Bill Belichick denied reports of him considering to
- 28:33Speaker 2: buy out, calling the exit categorically false. They play Cal
- 28:38Speaker 2: in a nationally televised game on Friday. Bo, how do
- 28:41Speaker 2: you think this Bill Belichick thing plays out over the
- 28:43Speaker 2: next few weeks?
- 28:44Speaker 1: Yeah, what I take that as is in the words
- 28:47Speaker 1: of the great Stephon Marbury. They're going to give me
- 28:51Speaker 1: all of my money. That's what that is. If Belichick
- 28:55Speaker 1: pursues the buyout, it's Belichick writing them a check for
- 28:59Speaker 1: like a million dollars or something like that and then
- 29:01Speaker 1: getting out of there. There is no way in the
- 29:04Speaker 1: world that Bill Belichick wants to signal that he is
- 29:09Speaker 1: willing to make it easy for them to get rid
- 29:12Speaker 1: of him. But they got to get rid of him. Now,
- 29:16Speaker 1: that's the one where we need to find out exactly
- 29:18Speaker 1: what the offset language is. Now, of course, the problem
- 29:21Speaker 1: for Carolina with offset language is Bill Belichick is he
- 29:24Speaker 1: might be able to get a media job, but his
- 29:27Speaker 1: media job will be like what he was doing before. Right.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Like doing like, you know, something like I don't even
- 29:31Speaker 1: know if inside the NFL still come on, but like
- 29:33Speaker 1: doing a show like that or like a film show.
- 29:35Speaker 1: But it's not gonna be enough to truly eat up
- 29:37Speaker 1: and all that money they are paying him but this
- 29:40Speaker 1: is where stuff like Franklin messes it up now I
- 29:43Speaker 1: had a buddy of mine who made the point where
- 29:45Speaker 1: he saw that Franklin had got fired and he said
- 29:48Speaker 1: uh yep that's what you do when you're serious about
- 29:51Speaker 1: football take a guess where he went to college UNC Oh, no, no, no.
- 30:01Speaker 1: What school above all else can you think of that
- 30:04Speaker 1: would use the phrase serious about football? Alabama. He's like,
- 30:10Speaker 1: you're damn right. 34-8, not good enough.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:15Speaker 1: That's not what we're about. It was the first time
- 30:18Speaker 1: I'd ever seen crazy Bama fan come out of him,
- 30:20Speaker 1: and he wasn't even being that crazy. But I fully
- 30:23Speaker 1: got what he was saying.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Just said it matter-of-factly.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like, this is what we're going to do.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Or the greatest and most important quote in the history
- 30:30Speaker 1: of college football, Jeremy Foley, after they decided they were
- 30:33Speaker 1: going to fire Ron Zook after he got crooned in 2004.
- 30:37Speaker 1: That which will be done eventually should be done immediately.
- 30:45Speaker 1: They are going to fire Bill Belichick. I don't know
- 30:48Speaker 1: where they're going to get this money from to get
- 30:51Speaker 1: him out of here. But they got to get him
- 30:54Speaker 1: out of here because it's not going to get any better.
- 30:55Speaker 1: They're not going to win any more games. We're again
- 30:58Speaker 1: getting more stuff about, you know, the Patriots and him,
- 31:01Speaker 1: you know, whether or not he had allowed them to
- 31:03Speaker 1: tweet about the Patriots, which means tweeting about Drake May,
- 31:06Speaker 1: which is probably the greatest PR that this program has.
- 31:09Speaker 1: All of this stuff. How can anybody be having fun
- 31:13Speaker 1: right now?
- 31:13Speaker 2: Also, all those players are going to leave.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 31:17Speaker 2: And who's going to want to go back there?
- 31:19Speaker 1: Well, well, well, here's the one thing. some of those
- 31:21Speaker 1: players are going to leave, right? But case in point,
- 31:25Speaker 1: their quarterback, I read, is making $ 2 million. I don't
- 31:31Speaker 1: think nobody giving that little homie $ 2 million to go
- 31:34Speaker 1: nowhere else. He trying to figure out how to stay forever.
- 31:37Speaker 2: How to get a contract extension.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:38Speaker 1: He would like to get a PharmD if he somehow
- 31:41Speaker 1: could and stick around. But it is... He's going to
- 31:46Speaker 1: try to get his money, but... What's got to stink
- 31:49Speaker 1: for him, and I think the thing that makes him
- 31:50Speaker 1: want to say more than anything else is, once it's
- 31:52Speaker 1: over here, it's over. Right. Ain't no jobs. There's no more.
- 31:57Speaker 1: What do you do when that's the only thing in
- 32:00Speaker 1: the world that does it for you? It's just not
- 32:03Speaker 1: an option. We about to find out just how in
- 32:06Speaker 1: love he is, or more accurately, how in love she is.
- 32:10Speaker 1: This shit they doing is a lot easier to do
- 32:12Speaker 1: when he at work for 60 hours a week. Yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 2: I mean, you're certainly not doing the media tour you
- 32:19Speaker 2: did last year, and you're certainly not getting another NFL job.
- 32:23Speaker 5: No.
- 32:23Speaker 2: How this is going to work, it'll be interesting.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Yo, I just forgot. You're right. He can't get no
- 32:28Speaker 1: job in the NFL, in all likelihood.
- 32:30Speaker 2: No, he can't. There's no way he's going back to
- 32:32Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 32:33Speaker 1: But I mean, not just as a coach. Can he
- 32:37Speaker 1: get a job broadcasting? Like, do you want to hire
- 32:43Speaker 1: Bill Belichick Okay, think about this for a second. Let's
- 32:48Speaker 1: imagine it's a bizarro world and there is an inside
- 32:51Speaker 1: the NFL that is like inside the NBA. Can you
- 32:55Speaker 1: imagine the hell that bizarro Charles Barkley gives Bill Belichick
- 33:01Speaker 1: for being in the news.
- 33:02Speaker 2: About this girl? Let's say Fox calls. Hey, you want
- 33:05Speaker 2: to come hang out for eight weeks? Even Terry Bradshaw, like,
- 33:09Speaker 2: that's a pretty G-rated show.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:11Speaker 2: But, I mean, even Bradshaw will make those jokes.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's not taking them. He's not just rolling
- 33:17Speaker 1: with the punches. No. And what nobody wants is something unpredictable. Right.
- 33:23Speaker 1: And he's kind of sort of unpredictable, Ian, with a
- 33:27Speaker 1: clear grudge against a team in the league.
- 33:30Speaker 2: With a very powerful owner.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't. He's done. Yeah. He's going to hold
- 33:36Speaker 1: on to this job as tight as he can.
- 33:38Speaker 2: It's wild. All right. Shifting gears here. Target is soft
- 33:43Speaker 2: launching sales of a THC infused beverages at select stores
- 33:46Speaker 2: in Minnesota. They're going to target 10 select stores in
- 33:50Speaker 2: the state to put a dozen THC drink bands. Bo,
- 33:53Speaker 2: your thoughts.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Hey, man, I know pretend though when I see it.
- 33:59Speaker 1: That sounds something don't something don't something don't sound right
- 34:04Speaker 1: about this. Does Target even sell beer?
- 34:07Speaker 2: Target sells beer.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Well, Target sells... Well, it's one of those things with...
- 34:11Speaker 2: Eversted has their own specific.
- 34:13Speaker 1: That's what I was about to say.
- 34:15Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Louisiana just came out very fast. Of course Target sells beer.
- 34:18Speaker 1: That's exactly what I was saying right there. Every store
- 34:21Speaker 1: is a liquor store in Louisiana. Correct. For those of
- 34:23Speaker 1: you who don't know, every store is a liquor store.
- 34:26Speaker 1: But right when I said that, I was like, nobody
- 34:27Speaker 1: just asked a dude in Louisiana about this. But like.
- 34:32Speaker 5: If.
- 34:33Speaker 1: I just don't see any way possible that they let
- 34:36Speaker 1: you buy, buy, buy, we buy, buy, buy, drinkables at
- 34:41Speaker 1: the target. I just can't like, how much does it
- 34:44Speaker 1: have in it? I can't, but if they are right,
- 34:48Speaker 1: Target's about to become the spot. Cause then they go
- 34:51Speaker 1: have to get other ones.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, and also, um, I don't know how,
- 34:56Speaker 2: you know, stores in Minnesota work, but it's like, if
- 34:59Speaker 2: you're buying the drinkables, is it behind like a partition
- 35:02Speaker 2: where you have to push the button? Is it like
- 35:04Speaker 2: the cigarettes where you have to go up to your
- 35:06Speaker 2: own second counter? Like, is it just in the Gen
- 35:09Speaker 2: Pop store? Like that, the logistics of that are very interesting.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Well, I have to tell you, I did not realize
- 35:16Speaker 1: that Minnesota had gone legal.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Tim Walz. There he is.
- 35:25Speaker 1: There he is. Wow. No, this is, hey man, this is. Dude,
- 35:30Speaker 1: I ain't going to lie. I wasn't familiar with your game, guys.
- 35:33Speaker 1: I was certain that this was Pretendo. And no, it
- 35:37Speaker 1: looks like, oh, it says that it's a legal gray area.
- 35:46Speaker 2: I feel like a lot of stuff with how we
- 35:49Speaker 2: legalize has become a legal gray area. You remember those
- 35:51Speaker 2: two years where every store in New York was a— Oh,
- 35:53Speaker 2: my God.
- 35:56Speaker 1: That is a– when they do the documentary of COVID,
- 36:01Speaker 1: one part will be the day New York went legal.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Correct.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Right?
- 36:05Speaker 1: You just heard– it sounded like a Lil Wayne mixtape.
- 36:09Speaker 1: It just started everywhere, just lighter flick, right? All over
- 36:13Speaker 1: the place. And then where every store was a weed store.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Every– illegal, renegade. And then one day they weren't.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Then they were gone.
- 36:21Speaker 1: They were all gone.
- 36:21Speaker 2: There was a 15-month period where they were all here.
- 36:24Speaker 5: Yes.
- 36:24Speaker 2: And then they were all gone.
- 36:25Speaker 1: They were all gone. And by the way, they all
- 36:27Speaker 1: made the bodega step their games up. Every bodega got
- 36:30Speaker 1: a lot cleaner and got them purple lights. Thanks to
- 36:33Speaker 1: the weed stores.
- 36:35Speaker 2: All right. And finally, Turning Point USA has announced the
- 36:39Speaker 2: All-American Halftime Show. They're going to be counter-programming Bad Bunny's
- 36:43Speaker 2: performance during the Super Bowl halftime. However, a lot of
- 36:47Speaker 2: people fell for a fake promotional poster that included artists
- 36:54Speaker 2: Such as, let me pull this up so everyone can see.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, Jason Aldean. and featuring a guest
- 37:01Speaker 2: appearance from measles.
- 37:04Speaker 1: And it was even more people on the list. I'm like,
- 37:07Speaker 1: how long do you think the Superbowl? I mean, halftime
- 37:09Speaker 1: is 45 minutes. Like that shit looked like a music
- 37:11Speaker 1: festival with measles, um, at the bottom. And I'll say,
- 37:15Speaker 1: I have absolutely no problem with them making the decision
- 37:17Speaker 1: to do this. I can't believe that they like drawn
- 37:19Speaker 1: this line in the sand. And though, I guess like
- 37:21Speaker 1: bad buddies got a lot of kind of anti-colonial politics
- 37:24Speaker 1: on one of his recent records. Um, I haven't, I,
- 37:28Speaker 1: My Spanish just ain't there. I'm going to try to
- 37:30Speaker 1: do it and see how it goes. His music ain't
- 37:34Speaker 1: my kind of music, generally speaking. But look, if people
- 37:38Speaker 1: don't want to watch Bad Bunny, then fine. And if
- 37:39Speaker 1: they want to have a country music halftime show, okay.
- 37:44Speaker 1: It really doesn't bother me at all. I think it's
- 37:47Speaker 1: dumb that they're this mad. I think it's dumb that
- 37:51Speaker 1: they're doing all this to try to enact some measure
- 37:55Speaker 1: of change. But No, that's what I want to go
- 38:00Speaker 1: do that. Like this isn't going to affect me in
- 38:04Speaker 1: the least. What the question is going to be about
- 38:06Speaker 1: this is. They have given Jay-Z and them a lot
- 38:11Speaker 1: of leeway with this halftime show. And if I'm going
- 38:14Speaker 1: to be honest. They probably haven't done enough. Just a
- 38:20Speaker 1: little bit of compromising. Like it's been year after year
- 38:23Speaker 1: after year after year after year of these acts that
- 38:27Speaker 1: a significant portion of the population has nothing for. Like
- 38:31Speaker 1: the G-Funk Super Bowl, that was one thing. Everybody loves
- 38:34Speaker 1: the G-Funk. Kendrick Lamar was the biggest thing that was
- 38:37Speaker 1: going on at the time, but it was a fair
- 38:39Speaker 1: question to ask. if that was a Super Bowl halftime.
- 38:43Speaker 2: You're saying they're going to have to do, they've been
- 38:45Speaker 2: doing a lot for them and they're going to have
- 38:47Speaker 2: to do one for us?
- 38:48Speaker 1: Jay-Z has been like, we got this now, right? Like,
- 38:53Speaker 1: we got this under control. And I think that this
- 38:57Speaker 1: bad bunny thing truly is as much a backlash to
- 39:02Speaker 1: that part. Now, the counterpoint obviously is, and this is true,
- 39:05Speaker 1: is that they could go years and years and years
- 39:07Speaker 1: of stuff that black people don't care about at all,
- 39:09Speaker 1: and we tolerate it and we truck through it, and
- 39:11Speaker 1: that is 100% true. That is what we do. I
- 39:14Speaker 1: am saying it has been a hard shift, and I
- 39:18Speaker 1: am not surprised that that has eventually met with a
- 39:21Speaker 1: measure of score. They're like, god damn, is one thing
- 39:24Speaker 1: to do this this hippity hoppity rapid this motherfucker don't
- 39:27Speaker 1: even speak english they're like well he does speak english
- 39:30Speaker 1: this ain't no interview it's the halftime.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Show who is going to be jay-z's olive branch.
- 39:38Speaker 1: I don't even know who the midpoint is anymore.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Is it miley cyrus is it.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Because they can you bring justin timberlake back yeah Can you?
- 39:52Speaker 1: Because I think it's about time to bring Janet Jackson back.
- 39:59Speaker 1: They did her wrong. She got all the hits and jams.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I think it's about time. Everybody loved Janet Jackson. And
- 40:09Speaker 1: if you're going to tell me that the reason you
- 40:11Speaker 1: don't love Janet Jackson is that her breast was partially exposed,
- 40:15Speaker 1: I don't even know why you was here in the
- 40:16Speaker 1: first place.
- 40:23Speaker 2: All right, Bo, voicemail lines open. Got a few good ones.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Here's our first.
- 40:27Speaker 5: Omani, this is Bryce in Brooklyn by way of Pittsburgh.
- 40:32Speaker 5: I just got to say this, man. You've got to
- 40:33Speaker 5: get off that narcotic when it comes to America's team.
- 40:36Speaker 5: I know you love your Lions. America's team. has been
- 40:40Speaker 5: shown time and time again to be the Pittsburgh Steelers,
- 40:42Speaker 5: not the Dallas Cowboys, definitely not the New England Patriots
- 40:46Speaker 5: or any of these other teams. We don't just travel well.
- 40:49Speaker 5: We are everywhere in every city and every state. There
- 40:53Speaker 5: is still a nation. Please understand why Pittsburgh is truly
- 40:57Speaker 5: America's team.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Thanks, man. No.
- 41:03Speaker 3: No.
- 41:08Speaker 1: That's why y'all ain't won no playoff game since it
- 41:09Speaker 1: was a black president. It's been that goddamn long. Look
- 41:12Speaker 1: at the world around you. See how crazy everything is?
- 41:15Speaker 1: It's been so long since y'all won a playoff game
- 41:17Speaker 1: that black man was the president. America's team is doing
- 41:22Speaker 1: it right now. Get hip. Get with the times.
- 41:27Speaker 2: All right, Bo, here's our next one.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Hey, Bomani.
- 41:30Speaker 3: This is Hair from Kansas City, Missouri. I was just
- 41:34Speaker 3: calling because Robert Glasper has a new album out. And
- 41:38Speaker 3: there's a fantastic cover of Outcast's prototype. And it features
- 41:46Speaker 3: Nora Jones. And I was just curious, do you have
- 41:50Speaker 3: any favorite covers that come to mind?
- 41:56Speaker 1: Man, that there is the super long list, right? Because, like,
- 42:01Speaker 1: damn near everything is a cover at some point. Like,
- 42:05Speaker 1: It's hard for me to think of just one that
- 42:09Speaker 1: immediately jumps out. There's some that just become kind of
- 42:14Speaker 1: classically beloved, like the Wilson Pickett cover of Hey Jude.
- 42:18Speaker 1: That's always one that goes super hard because it just
- 42:20Speaker 1: in some ways seems like it doesn't or shouldn't make sense. Wow.
- 42:25Speaker 1: This is what happens. My brain overloads on this because
- 42:29Speaker 1: all I got to do is just really throw you one.
- 42:31Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? That's all you're really looking
- 42:33Speaker 1: for is what I am sifting through everything. Yeah.
- 42:37Speaker 2: It's like, it's like how much time you got, you know?
- 42:39Speaker 1: Yes.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Like, yes.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Yes. Like we could do this all day long, but yes,
- 42:44Speaker 1: if you've never listened to the Wilson picket, Hey Jude
- 42:46Speaker 1: cover with Dwayne Almond on guitar, go ahead and start there.
- 42:48Speaker 1: And I'll think more about this later.
- 42:49Speaker 2: All right, Bo, here's our last one.
- 42:52Speaker 3: What's up, Bo?
- 42:53Speaker 4: So I got a question for you. If you have
- 42:55Speaker 4: a time where, if it was a teacher thing, or
- 42:59Speaker 4: someone you knew where they had just had it with someone.
- 43:03Speaker 4: I'm thinking like someone in authority, because I got one.
- 43:06Speaker 4: I went to an all boys Catholic high school and
- 43:10Speaker 4: we had a class that was taught by a priest
- 43:14Speaker 4: named Father George. And one time, I'm going to change,
- 43:18Speaker 4: that's his name. I'll change everyone else's name involved. There
- 43:21Speaker 4: was this guy, call him Mike, Mike Jones, right?
- 43:26Speaker 2: Who?
- 43:27Speaker 4: And he was just misbehaving all class. And Father George says,
- 43:33Speaker 4: all right, boys, if no one is supposed to say
- 43:38Speaker 4: a word unless they raise their hand, okay? I've had it.
- 43:42Speaker 4: Do you understand me? And Mike goes, raises his hand.
- 43:47Speaker 4: He goes, what do you want, Michael? I understand, Father.
- 43:50Speaker 4: And he's just like, stay after class. And so he
- 43:56Speaker 4: has to stay after class. We're all, like, crying around
- 43:58Speaker 4: the door looking at him, like, ooh, you know, you're
- 44:00Speaker 4: in trouble. And we hear Father George, a man of
- 44:03Speaker 4: the cloth, say, Michael, you are a jerk, an asshole,
- 44:10Speaker 4: and I hate you. Now get out of my room.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Walked out with his head down. And I just couldn't
- 44:18Speaker 4: believe it. A priest telling a young man that he
- 44:21Speaker 4: hates him. He just had it. And honestly, he deserved it.
- 44:27Speaker 4: He was, he was acting up and did a lot.
- 44:30Speaker 4: So yeah. Let me know if you got one, something
- 44:33Speaker 4: like that. All right, man.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Talk to you.
- 44:36Speaker 1: So I remember that. So I used to ride school
- 44:40Speaker 1: bus when I was in school and it was interesting
- 44:42Speaker 1: because I did not actually live in the school district,
- 44:44Speaker 1: but I would ride the school bus to my mom's office.
- 44:47Speaker 1: So I would school in this little town called Waller
- 44:49Speaker 1: and I would ride the bus to Prairie View where
- 44:50Speaker 1: my mom's office was.
- 44:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 44:52Speaker 1: And so, Prairie View or this Waller County, which you
- 44:56Speaker 1: may know as this is, just to give you a
- 44:58Speaker 1: little context about some of the situations, that is where
- 45:00Speaker 1: the Sandra Bland incident took place, right? And I'm just
- 45:03Speaker 1: saying this to say that I think there was a
- 45:07Speaker 1: touchmosism that I fully appreciated or realized at the time. Anyway,
- 45:12Speaker 1: so my bus dropped all the kids off in Prairie View.
- 45:16Speaker 1: And so it was a kind of wall-to-wall black bus.
- 45:18Speaker 1: And in this period of time, the only white people
- 45:21Speaker 1: on the bus were these two white kids who rode
- 45:24Speaker 1: the bus because their white mother, Ms. Susan, was driving
- 45:27Speaker 1: the bus.
- 45:28Speaker 4: Okay.
- 45:29Speaker 1: And I'm going to be honest with you. We was
- 45:31Speaker 1: a handful. And I want to be very careful in
- 45:34Speaker 1: not implying that Ms. Susan had animosity toward us because
- 45:39Speaker 1: we was black on that bus, because I would have
- 45:41Speaker 1: had animosity toward our black asses too. And I don't
- 45:44Speaker 1: recall her ever expressing anything in terms of race. But
- 45:48Speaker 1: I do remember one day Miss Susan wasn't driving the
- 45:51Speaker 1: bus no more. She just wasn't driving the bus no more.
- 45:56Speaker 1: And Miss Susan, apparently, I had not been on the
- 46:00Speaker 1: bus the day before, and they said that Miss Susan
- 46:03Speaker 1: had a meltdown on that bus and said loud enough
- 46:07Speaker 1: to be heard that, quote, I would rather cut grass
- 46:12Speaker 1: and pick cotton than drive this damn bus another day. Now,
- 46:19Speaker 1: I am going to assume that she really needed this drive,
- 46:23Speaker 1: driving this bus. Cause otherwise, why would she be driving
- 46:26Speaker 1: this bus? But however, she badly, she needed that money
- 46:30Speaker 1: to drive the bus. She did.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Being on a, as someone who is a parent now,
- 46:37Speaker 2: someone who being on a bus with like 46 year
- 46:42Speaker 2: old kids.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Or like six to ten year old kids. That sounds awful.
- 46:48Speaker 1: I have a friend, and I will not identify who
- 46:50Speaker 1: that friend is, but he tells a story about this
- 46:53Speaker 1: apartment he had in college. And they was in there
- 46:56Speaker 1: just acting bad, toe the place up on top of
- 46:59Speaker 1: the fact that they was moving various forms of dope
- 47:07Speaker 1: and a few firearms out of this apartment. It was
- 47:10Speaker 1: just way too much going on. They laid on the rent,
- 47:13Speaker 1: all that stuff. One day, the landlord came in, looked around,
- 47:20Speaker 1: and just said, you.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Got to go.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Don't worry about it. I don't care about the money.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Just get your shit and go. You just got to go.
- 47:35Speaker 1: Nothing quite like when somebody is driven to their absolute end.
- 47:39Speaker 1: This must cease. This must stop. Speaking of which, ladies
