- 0:00Speaker 1: Now we know that the Northern Territory's top sports people
- 0:03Speaker 1: were recognized at a prestigious awards night on the weekend.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I was very lucky to mc that event and really
- 0:10Speaker 1: saw firsthand the amazing sports people that we've got in
- 0:13Speaker 1: the Northern Territory. I see a lot of them anyway,
- 0:15Speaker 1: because I'm always out there at different sports.
- 0:17Speaker 2: But finalists did.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Take to the stage at that beautiful gala dinner celebrating
- 0:22Speaker 1: their achievements as well as well, not only the athletes,
- 0:25Speaker 1: but the coaches, the volunteers, officials, everybody who makes grassroots
- 0:30Speaker 1: and high performance sport possible.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Here in the Northern Territory.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Now, one of my favorite awards every year is the
- 0:37Speaker 1: Northern Territory Junior Sportsperson of the Year, and this year,
- 0:42Speaker 1: the wonderful Amy Stripling was among those honored on the night,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and she joins me on the line right now.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Good morning, Amy.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Ny, How are you yeah?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Really good? It is wonderful to have you on the show.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Amy.
- 0:57Speaker 1: How did you feel on Saturday night when your name
- 0:59Speaker 1: was called out as the Junior sports Person of the Year.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I was pretty emotional. I really wasn't expecting it, so
- 1:07Speaker 3: it was an amazing surprise, and it was really good
- 1:09Speaker 3: because it was such a big hockey community there to
- 1:13Speaker 3: support us. But it was just an amazing event really.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Now, Amy, for those out there listening, how old are.
- 1:19Speaker 3: You, I just turned seventeen.
- 1:22Speaker 2: How awesome?
- 1:23Speaker 1: So seventeen and hockey is the sport that you are
- 1:28Speaker 1: involved in. How did it feel to take out the
- 1:31Speaker 1: highest award for youth here in the Northern Territory.
- 1:37Speaker 3: It was just a surprise, Like I just I just
- 1:39Speaker 3: played hockey. It's just as well I love to do.
- 1:42Speaker 3: So it was just really special to get the acknowledgments
- 1:45Speaker 3: for that. I just want to expecting though, So it
- 1:49Speaker 3: was really nice.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You were so wonderful when you got up there on
- 1:52Speaker 1: the microphone because you were so incredibly surprised, and I
- 1:55Speaker 1: think that that shows just how humble you are in
- 1:58Speaker 1: terms of achievements. I mean, hockey is such a tremendous
- 2:03Speaker 1: sport because you can do well as an individual, as
- 2:06Speaker 1: you have been recognized, but you're part of a team.
- 2:09Speaker 1: You're part of an amazing team.
- 2:11Speaker 2: How did all your.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Teammates respond to the fact that you won the award?
- 2:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it was really good. One of my states mates,
- 2:19Speaker 3: Mackenzie Dixon was a finalist of Performance of the Year,
- 2:22Speaker 3: so she was actually there on the night, so it
- 2:25Speaker 3: was amazing to see us both dressed up there at
- 2:28Speaker 3: the event. It was amazing. And then I had training
- 2:31Speaker 3: last night, so I got to see all the boys
- 2:32Speaker 3: and girls I trained with and they're all very proud
- 2:35Speaker 3: of me. But yeah, it's just a team thing, like
- 2:38Speaker 3: we wouldn't be anywhere without each other. We trained together,
- 2:41Speaker 3: we worked together, so it's all a team in a Yeah,
- 2:44Speaker 3: it's a really good environment. So it was really good.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Tell me what some of the highlights have been for
- 2:48Speaker 1: you with hockey so far.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Well, the last twelve months has been really big. I
- 2:55Speaker 3: made the Australian Indoor and Outdoor Under eighteenth that was
- 3:01Speaker 3: really a crowd moment. I've been able to go on
- 3:04Speaker 3: development camp with Hockey Show to places like Adelaide and
- 3:09Speaker 3: Camper so they were really cool. Last year I played
- 3:14Speaker 3: in the under twenty one Nationals for Essa because and
- 3:17Speaker 3: she didn't have a team and I was the youngest
- 3:19Speaker 3: and the whle tournament both men and women. But yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 3: it's just everything together.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Really, you absolute legend. That is pretty incredible stuff. To
- 3:29Speaker 1: be the youngest person there was it a bit daunting
- 3:33Speaker 1: for you, oh.
- 3:35Speaker 3: For sure, especially playing with another state because then she
- 3:38Speaker 3: didn't have a team. But we've got the team's gone
- 3:41Speaker 3: along really well and it was a really good tournament.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Now, what's on the cards for this year?
- 3:45Speaker 1: What are you hoping to do and what are you
- 3:47Speaker 1: hoping to achieve with your hockey?
- 3:51Speaker 3: I go to Perth in about a week's time to
- 3:53Speaker 3: play my first Premier League in Perth, so I'll stay
- 3:56Speaker 3: there and play prems and then later in the year
- 4:00Speaker 3: we'll have Under eighty Nationals where I'm hoping to get
- 4:03Speaker 3: selected in the Australian Future squad again and then hopefully
- 4:08Speaker 3: a couple more development camps.
- 4:10Speaker 2: How awesome.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I think that the Northern Territory should be really proud
- 4:14Speaker 1: of your achievements. And I'm pretty sure is it your grandma?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Is your grandma Glenda? I think she listens to the show. Yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 1: I'm sure she's probably listening this morning. And I'm sure
- 4:27Speaker 1: that your whole family is incredibly proud of you.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yeah they sure.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Oh well, Amy, biggest congratulations on your achievements.
- 4:37Speaker 2: She should be so proud of yourself.
- 4:38Speaker 1: And I just thought that you'd conducted yourself beautifully as
- 4:41Speaker 1: well on Saturday Night. You're so gracious and so humble
- 4:45Speaker 1: in your achievements and that says a lot about you
- 4:48Speaker 1: as a person.
- 4:49Speaker 2: So a big.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Congratulations on all of your achievements and I hope that
- 4:54Speaker 1: you keep smashing those goals.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Thank you so much, thank you, thanks for your time
- 4:59Speaker 2: this morning. Ivy
