- 0:00Hey everybody, I know you think of us as just
- 0:01sports fans and we talk sports a lot on here.
- 0:04There's all kinds of fandom out there and guess
- 0:05what? We're fans of movies as well. Big fans
- 0:08of movies. So go ahead, grab your popcorn. Grab
- 0:11your goobers. Jujubees. Those weird people who
- 0:14eat hot dogs at the movies. Do you sneak food
- 0:18into the movie theater? I used to. Not now. But
- 0:22when we got little kids, you sneak in those Capri
- 0:25Suns, fit in my cargo shorts. Oh my god, those
- 0:28Capri Suns. I haven't had one in forever. Then
- 0:30put some candy, popcorn, and some baggies. Wow.
- 0:34Smuggling it in, man. Let's do that, yeah. Teach
- 0:36your kids. No. No. Would you ever take fast food
- 0:41in? Did you ever take like a burger or a hot
- 0:43dog in? Or some fries? No. Yeah, I never took
- 0:46that in. My go -to, though, is Icy and a popcorn.
- 0:51Icy and a popcorn, that's a good mix. I love
- 0:55the movie theater nachos. I don't know why nachos
- 0:57taste better in the movie theater. They do. Nachos
- 1:00is not a bad one. But, you know, crunchy. I don't
- 1:02know. Yeah, crunchy, salty. Yeah. I mean, you
- 1:05know, like you said, I don't know if I could
- 1:07do nachos. That's loud. That's loud food. Yeah,
- 1:09but the fake cheese stuff, I have no idea what
- 1:11it's made out of. Boy, is it delicious. Yeah.
- 1:15Kick back. We're going to go over and discuss
- 1:16some movies for you. Yeah. Sit back. Cuddle up.
- 1:20podcast and chill what's up everybody welcome
- 1:26to another episode of fanatically speaking I'm
- 1:29Kent the co -host and promoter I am the log -off
- 1:32legend the hater of social media I am the co
- 1:34-host and producer of the show today's episode
- 1:37we're gonna you know again taking a different
- 1:39direction we're gonna dive into movies specifically
- 1:42superhero movies in a broad scheme and then we're
- 1:46gonna talk about Marvel a little breakdown of
- 1:48Marvel movies and the Box office success. Yeah.
- 1:51And that's the thing about Marvel movies. They
- 1:53crossed over. I felt like superhero movies were
- 1:56really kind of straightforward, like it was just
- 1:59for dudes. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe
- 2:03and all the recent superhero movies that have
- 2:05come out over the last decade have been massive.
- 2:08A lot of universal appeal. And so we hope all
- 2:11of you enjoyed this pie. We're just going to
- 2:12go over that real quick. We're big fans of that
- 2:14type of stuff. Yeah, definitely caught on to
- 2:17the Marvel stuff. It took me a minute, but once
- 2:20I was in, I was in. Yeah. And again, when you
- 2:23got kids, they suck you in, and then you're all
- 2:25watching. You're keeping up and following it,
- 2:28right? Got it. And one of the things I wanted
- 2:29to talk about today was just superhero movies,
- 2:34are they losing their steam? Right? So that's
- 2:39a loaded question, because when you say losing
- 2:42their steam, how would you define that? So I'm
- 2:47a big like looking at, I follow the box office
- 2:49success, especially domestic. I know international
- 2:52and worldwide is huge and that's a big number,
- 2:55but we in the States. So we always looking like,
- 2:58how did you do domestically? And you get used
- 3:01to something, right? Most Marvel movies and superhero
- 3:04movies, they do big box office. That's why they're
- 3:07made. They're judged off of what did you do with
- 3:12the box office? And then what's that threshold?
- 3:16They're not all gonna be Avengers Endgame. They're
- 3:20not all gonna be Black Panther, Avengers Infinity
- 3:22War, Deadpool Wolverine. Those are some of the
- 3:26top ones. At least Marvel -wise, right? But like
- 3:32I said, I feel like they're losing their steam.
- 3:33And I go by this year alone, right? And specifically
- 3:37Marvel. Like we could talk about Superman. It
- 3:40has a decent decent showing domestically in the
- 3:43350 million range I don't think it reached what
- 3:46it should or could or they thought internationally
- 3:50But that that's apparently like a all the way
- 3:53around Marvel DC doesn't matter right and Marvel's
- 3:58always had the upper hand on DC movies right
- 4:00outside of yeah outside of Dark Knight series
- 4:04It's always Marvel always always they've been
- 4:07owning the box office. I I've never cared about
- 4:12box office results. It never really mattered
- 4:15to me. I mean, I know what some of the bigger
- 4:18movies are just because, you know, like historically,
- 4:21if a movie's huge, you know, that news kind of
- 4:25finds you. But for me, I'm such a movie snob.
- 4:30Like, it's pretty difficult to impress me. with
- 4:33a movie. Superhero movies have always kind of
- 4:36done it for me, but they've also been incredibly
- 4:38well done. They tell great stories, they've got
- 4:40great characters, good acting, comedic, they're
- 4:44funny. But how it performed for me, because a
- 4:48lot of people want to rank the success of a movie
- 4:50and kind of correlate how much they liked it
- 4:53based on how... Everyone else liked it and I
- 4:57think that's where I deviate because there are
- 4:59a lot of you know subpar movies that I enjoy
- 5:02and I liked it and I care less that it made 250
- 5:05million when people thought it could have made
- 5:07750 true and I get that on some movies and Not
- 5:12that say that the Marvel or superhero movies
- 5:14are not good But I'm not and not judging off
- 5:19the box office, but I think when you're talking
- 5:21superhero You're expecting big box office Because
- 5:25a regular movie, you can watch and be like, oh,
- 5:27it only did 50, 60 million. But you can say,
- 5:31well, that's one of the best movies I've ever
- 5:32seen in my life. That's true. And there's also
- 5:34movies that do big box office. And I'll give
- 5:37you one. And we're not even getting into the
- 5:38fun comment yet. One of the worst movies I've
- 5:41ever seen is The Lion King, the live version.
- 5:48Oh, the remake of The Lion King? The remake Lion
- 5:50King, live action. One of the worst movies I've
- 5:54ever seen. It's not the same as a cartoon. OK.
- 5:57And I can see that. But that's just a real thought
- 5:59I had there. I don't want to go off on a thing
- 6:02there. But again, back to the box office in Marvel,
- 6:07like this year alone, you had Captain America,
- 6:09Brave New World, $200 million. And I'll save
- 6:13my judgment on it. And then I watched Thunderbolts.
- 6:16It only did $190. And then you got Fantastic
- 6:20Four. It's at 273, so it didn't even break 300.
- 6:25And 300's like that threshold, like, for the
- 6:28most part. You know, you got those early Marvel
- 6:31movies was a little over 300 sometimes, and then
- 6:34they might be in the 200s, especially if they
- 6:37were origin movies, the story of, you know, Captain
- 6:39America, how he came about. They wanted to start
- 6:41in most of those movies with that origin. How
- 6:44did they become Captain America, Iron Man, Thor?
- 6:48And those get a little bit of... Not boring,
- 6:51but they're not established yet, so I get that
- 6:55part. And then there's just some Marvel movies
- 6:56like Ant -Man, you don't expect a lot, right?
- 6:59Doctor Strange, even though Doctor Strange, they
- 7:02have been big. But this year alone, that's why
- 7:04I say, have they lost their steam? Because the
- 7:06three movies that have come out this year, just
- 7:09sticking to Marvel at the moment, because I think
- 7:11350 would be a success for Superman. I need like
- 7:15a sounder for when I go into nerd alert or something
- 7:18like that. I'll see if I can throw something
- 7:20in there. I'm a movie snob, self -proclaimed.
- 7:25I'm very specific about what entertainment I
- 7:28spend, I take my time to watch, okay? So for
- 7:32me, if I enjoy it, I can't attach the success
- 7:37of it to how much I enjoy it. That's something
- 7:39totally different. But when you talk about the
- 7:42steam, if they've lost their esteem as being
- 7:45popular. You have to understand, I think there's
- 7:48like a line of demarcation. And I believe that
- 7:53line was COVID. Okay, I think if you look at
- 7:56the drop -off was post -covid when everyone was
- 7:59at home and everyone was streaming movies and
- 8:02movies were going direct -to -video because they
- 8:04had already made these movies and People weren't
- 8:07able to actually go out and watch them in the
- 8:09numbers that they wanted them to right so I think
- 8:11that's the first part but the second part is
- 8:14the the evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
- 8:19was So well done that I think it placed the bar
- 8:24so high for superhero movies that it's like To
- 8:29make a sports comparison. It's like Stephen Curry's
- 8:33best year It's like Jordan going to six finals
- 8:36and winning six rings that line is so high That
- 8:40you feel like anything less than that just isn't
- 8:43as good when it could be as good It's just not
- 8:47that great. So there were cultural movements
- 8:51to where you could tell people, hey, you need
- 8:54to watch this movie, this movie, this movie,
- 8:56this movie, then go see this Avengers movie,
- 8:58right? And I think that kind of helped because
- 9:00people felt as if they needed to see everything
- 9:04in the theater, great experience, just to make
- 9:07sure that they were keeping up with the story.
- 9:09It was long form storytelling in the form of
- 9:13superhero movies, which is something that I don't
- 9:15think they're doing their best at right now.
- 9:18No, and I agree with that because end game was
- 9:23the end game. Correct. Everything you've been
- 9:25watching in the movies, in the theater, was leading
- 9:28up to that moment. Yes. They had you hooked leading
- 9:32up to that moment. The movie comes out, it is
- 9:34amazing, it does great, now what? What's your
- 9:39chaser? Yeah, you watch the end credits, you
- 9:41can't wait, that cliffhanger, you can't wait
- 9:43for the next one. And again, though, Thanos,
- 9:46one of the greatest villains ever, My favorite
- 9:48villain. Yeah. So it's like, yeah, again, you
- 9:51got to that point. Now they're starting over.
- 9:55Even though I got these stats here, you know,
- 9:57Spider -Man, No Way Home, $804 million. Everybody
- 10:01went to see it. 2021, right? Again, though, coming
- 10:04out of COVID. Right out of COVID. You want to
- 10:06get back out. But also, I think, if not the best
- 10:08Marvel movie, top two Marvel movie is Spider
- 10:13-Man, No Way Home. No spoilers and actually we
- 10:17need to say that at the beginning no spoilers.
- 10:19No, we will not spoil this for you Yeah, if you
- 10:22haven't seen, you know, no way home. I don't
- 10:24know what to tell you but Do I need to edit that
- 10:29out about no way home I mean again if they haven't
- 10:34watched it. I'm being four years old. I'm big
- 10:36on spoilers, man I'm big on spoilers. I'm late
- 10:39to a lot. So we cut that out. I don't know we
- 10:42can it doesn't I might cut that all right good
- 10:44and and and they fell into that by the way there
- 10:47was no way when they made the toby maguire spider
- 10:51-man and then andrew garfield they didn't they
- 10:56had no idea that in the future they could have
- 11:00a movie With three spider -men in no and and
- 11:05all the villains. Yeah everything tied together
- 11:08It was in and again and a lot of a lot of cast
- 11:11the multiverse It was yeah, I mean they fell
- 11:14into it right Deadpool Wolverine also did big
- 11:17recently in 24, but again, you're bringing together
- 11:21two of the biggest you know comic book superhero
- 11:26characters ever Yeah, and they were pretty and
- 11:29that was and they had cameos and all that but
- 11:31they did that and I you know But but nowadays,
- 11:36I'm sorry, but I said nowadays though Like you
- 11:38were saying earlier and we talked about the you
- 11:40know, you had to go to the movies to build up
- 11:42now. It's Disney Plus you got the TV shows you
- 11:45got and and it's a lot my next point It's a lot.
- 11:49Yeah, and I don't I didn't want to take that
- 11:50from you So go for it. Yeah, so so with the and
- 11:54that's the other thing, you know with the with
- 11:55the streaming and I'll and I'll throw this in
- 11:58because one of the things that kind of turned
- 12:01me off was the the Black Widow Origin movie where
- 12:08it was supposed to be released in theaters, and
- 12:10then they pulled it from theaters and released
- 12:12it on Disney Plus I don't have Disney Plus right
- 12:15and Really movie it was a good movie. There were
- 12:18some issues with it with because it was supposed
- 12:20to be released into theaters, but But what it
- 12:23is is they've got and then they've got all the
- 12:25different types of series That are taking place
- 12:27on Disney Plus, and I understand what's happening
- 12:29They're trying to you know spread things out
- 12:32if you can have people subscribe Watch the you
- 12:35know movies or shows because before you mentioned
- 12:39the the Captain America Brave New World What
- 12:44preceded that was Falcon and the Winter Soldier?
- 12:47Yeah that series so in order to Understand what
- 12:51was going to take place in the new Captain America
- 12:52movie you had to subscribe to Disney Plus to
- 12:55understand you know so there's a lot of to watch
- 12:58the The series to understand what was going to
- 13:01happen in the movie so it It seems as if there's
- 13:06too much going on. It's much harder to follow
- 13:09now than it's ever been, right? But I don't know
- 13:14where the focus is for superhero movies. So for
- 13:17me, I just try to enjoy what I can. I enjoyed
- 13:22the latest Superman movie for what it was. I
- 13:25don't feel as if that movie was made for me.
- 13:29I feel like it was... I feel like it was intentionally
- 13:33a little corny because it had to be, and it worked.
- 13:37It was as universal as it, and either you like
- 13:39it or love it. I enjoyed it enough, but I also
- 13:42understood what they were trying to do. It was
- 13:44a vulnerable Superman movie. No spoilers. But
- 13:48it was still well done. And I felt like it told
- 13:51a great story. So I'm happy with them as a one
- 13:54-off. I don't need these Marvel movies to have
- 13:56connections in order for me to enjoy them. OK.
- 13:59And maybe that's where I'm different. Yeah, but
- 14:01they're going to. No, and I understand that.
- 14:03But I could watch, and I have not watched the
- 14:06Fantastic Four one yet. OK. Again, lose their
- 14:08steam. Maybe it's fatigue. Just because I'm looking
- 14:11at numbers lately. And again, I think it will.
- 14:16Marvel has always kind of went up and down depending
- 14:18on the movie. And and again, they've got three
- 14:23more on the docket right in the next few years
- 14:27and and that is, you know spider -man brand new
- 14:30day Avengers doomsday and Avengers secret wars.
- 14:35I Have a really funny feeling those three are
- 14:38gonna be huge Because we are leading up again
- 14:42to something right you want to see dr. Doom you
- 14:45want to Now you got it, it's Robert Downey Jr.
- 14:48and you're trying to say how is this gonna connect?
- 14:51Does it connect? You have people's attention,
- 14:55especially superhero comic fans. And Spider -Man
- 14:58movies normally do well anyways. So I think all
- 15:01three are going to get them back on the upper
- 15:05level of the box office and everything. So I
- 15:07got a piping hot magma take when it comes to...
- 15:13The Doomsday movie. OK. I believe it was a criminal
- 15:20oversight for Marvel to announce that Robert
- 15:25Downey Jr. was in that movie. I want you to imagine
- 15:28how viral it would have been for him to just
- 15:33be secretly cast in the movie as lower level
- 15:37as maybe some replay. Then you make him the bad
- 15:40guy and then it comes out and it's like, holy
- 15:42shit Robert Downey Jr The resurgence to reveal
- 15:47he's the have that having that as a reveal and
- 15:50spoiling it this early to get the buzz going
- 15:53Doesn't do as much for me as if you would have
- 15:56is if you would have said dude You need to go
- 15:58watch this movie and I'm not gonna tell you why
- 16:01it I They need to be better at those types of
- 16:04things and I think that was kind of a desperate
- 16:07play for them to kind of throw that out there
- 16:09because they didn't need it and They could have
- 16:12promoted that movie as best as they could without
- 16:14him and then And then have that reveal be so
- 16:19big and carry that momentum into a better than
- 16:24average box office performance. Just to kind
- 16:27of take us back to money. It makes sense. They
- 16:29like to reveal their cast though. They like to
- 16:31do that special now grand snippets here and there
- 16:36of the back of the director chair, the casting
- 16:39chair. So let me ask you this because I did not
- 16:41know this. You revealed a spoiler for the Spider
- 16:46-Man movie. Well, the four -year -old one? You
- 16:50still revealed it, right? Yes. Listen, I'm late
- 16:53to a lie, so I understand it. Well, I am, too.
- 16:56This is what I mean. So my question for you is,
- 17:00before you watched that movie, did you know about
- 17:04that particular spoiler? Ooh. I'm trying to remember
- 17:09now. Exactly. That's four years ago, so. And
- 17:10here's the thing. But I feel as if if you did,
- 17:14it would have lessened the surprise for you,
- 17:17right? Yeah, I honestly don't remember. OK. I
- 17:21was going to watch it either way. No, and I understand
- 17:24that. But what I'm saying is for me, knowing
- 17:26you and the way you watch movies, I feel like
- 17:29if you didn't know, you would have felt better
- 17:33about it. It would have been that kind of surprise.
- 17:35It would have been. It would have been a nice,
- 17:38pleasant experience for you. It would have been.
- 17:40As opposed to knowing going in. So it's the same
- 17:42thing with Robert Downey Jr. and Doomsday. Just
- 17:45for me personally. Okay. I got you. Okay. Next,
- 17:56sticking with movies, sticking with superhero.
- 17:58We want to talk about best, worst superhero movies.
- 18:02Like, what's yours, what's mine? There's a lot
- 18:05of them. Or maybe there's just a few that we
- 18:07can think of that say, hey, that's the best superhero
- 18:09movie I've seen. Well, that's the worst. So I
- 18:13like to qualify these types of questions. So
- 18:15we're speaking about superheroes as a whole.
- 18:20So we're talking about a character. Most of them
- 18:24from comic books. Yes, some of them, you know,
- 18:26probably from TV Some of them probably just created
- 18:28as a superhero. Okay, so all of them qualify
- 18:32here Yeah, so you can go with with with best
- 18:35and worst Go let's go with your best. Let's go
- 18:40with your best and then I'll throw one at you
- 18:42So I mean I mentioned this earlier. I mean it's
- 18:46and I want to put this again It's easy to say
- 18:48Avengers. Okay, because there's what? everybody
- 18:52Yeah. Right? Yeah. Ensemble cast. And this is
- 18:55a tough one. I say best and favorite. OK. You
- 18:57know what I mean? Like, I mentioned Spider -Man,
- 19:00No Way Home is, if not the best, it's up there
- 19:04of Marvel movies. That's fair. So I don't know
- 19:08if I can, you know, like, Dark Knight is a really
- 19:12good, you know, again, classic, if one of the
- 19:15best superhero movies. Trilogy. Trilogy. But
- 19:19just the Dark Knight, you know, with, again,
- 19:22Heath Ledger as the Joker, I mean, spoiler. Again,
- 19:29if you haven't watched it, I don't know what
- 19:30you're doing. Heath Ledger, you're good. Yeah,
- 19:32I think I'm good on that one, okay. But yeah,
- 19:35and I'm a huge Batman fan, so that's what took
- 19:39me a minute to go to Marvel, I think, because
- 19:42sometimes it's hard to get me off of what I like.
- 19:47And I don't want to give them a chance. And then
- 19:50I gave it a chance, and then I was like, oh my
- 19:51god, it's the best thing ever. And the same with
- 19:54I'm a big Guardians of the Galaxy, which I would
- 19:57put that trilogy up with the Dark Knight trilogy.
- 20:01OK. You know what I mean? OK. And Spider -Man
- 20:03again. I don't think you can go wrong with Spider
- 20:05-Man movies. I don't think you can go wrong with
- 20:08Guardians of the Galaxy. Best one ever is a tough
- 20:14one. I'm probably going to stick with Spider
- 20:16-Man No Way Home. OK, and that's a nice, solid,
- 20:20nice, solid pick. And I don't think even it was
- 20:24so great, I don't think anyone would accuse you
- 20:26of recency bias, OK? Yeah, it'll hold firm for
- 20:31many years. And I think that's strong. For my
- 20:36best, I'm going to go with the template. Am gonna
- 20:40go with the historical pick and I'm gonna go
- 20:43with one that even this day this time still holds
- 20:47up as One of the greatest superhero movie performances
- 20:52ever the original Christopher Reeve Superman
- 20:55It is a classic through and through it it kind
- 21:00of laid the groundwork for what superhero movies
- 21:02had the ability to become it I mean, I don't
- 21:06know if you could name any movie that Christopher
- 21:08Reeve was in before or after, right? Just on
- 21:11top of your head? You're right. But it was so
- 21:14impactful. And we could talk, you know, the whole
- 21:16kneel before Zod and all that. Like, it was such
- 21:20a huge movie back then. It held its own for years.
- 21:25So much so... So even with all the other renditions
- 21:28of superhero movies, they were chasing the success
- 21:31of that original. And for me, it holds firm.
- 21:36They've tried to remaster it and make it look
- 21:38more New Age. Still looks old to me, but I love
- 21:41that. Personally, I like it. And different type
- 21:44of... different type of superhero movies are
- 21:47being made now, where there's a lot more charisma
- 21:50and jokey and trendy music and nostalgic and
- 21:54all that. So that one was just kind of, no, no,
- 21:56no. We can make a really good superhero movie
- 21:58and that's what we're gonna do. So let's go ahead
- 22:00and shift to what you got for your worst. What
- 22:02would you say one of the worst superhero movies
- 22:05are? Because I'm gonna upset you. Oh, wow. Oh,
- 22:08I'm coming for you, go. Oh, wow. Yeah. I bet
- 22:12I know where you're going. I don't think you
- 22:14do. I think I do. I don't think you do. So just
- 22:18to say this, not to go back into box office.
- 22:23The Marvels did the worst box office as a Marvel
- 22:27movie. OK. It didn't eclipse 100 million. OK.
- 22:32Hold on. I'm sorry. You're saying the movie The
- 22:35Marvels. The movie The Marvels, 2023, did not
- 22:39eclipse. It did 84 and 1 half million domestically.
- 22:42I watched it not as bad. You know, as that, you
- 22:46know. The worst one is The Eternals. Okay. Again,
- 22:51not a terrible movie. Could have been better.
- 22:56And then, of course, I'm, again, it's not, like
- 22:59you said, recent, is it me being recently biased?
- 23:02I don't know. I mean, I could go back and maybe
- 23:05find a superhero movie that was really bad. But
- 23:10that one, just stick, stick him in Marvel. Okay,
- 23:14yeah, all right mine is full disclosure you are
- 23:19a huge fan of this actor You are you are a do
- 23:24it. I'm doing it. You're a huge fan of this And
- 23:28what I loved about about my pick for what I'm
- 23:32picking is the worst superhero movie is that
- 23:35most people didn't even realize that this person
- 23:37was an actual superhero they didn't realize that
- 23:40this person was a character and The reason why
- 23:44I'm making this pick is because I feel like how
- 23:48they created this movie changed what the character
- 23:52was, and it upset me because I was familiar with
- 23:55the character before, and I thought that it gave
- 23:57them an opportunity to do something edgy and
- 23:59different, and I do think that it would have
- 24:02helped this particular actor. I'll go ahead and
- 24:04stop stalling. It's Hancock, okay? Now, you guys
- 24:10are learning right now. Kent might be the largest
- 24:13Will Smith fan ever that I've ever seen. Anywhere
- 24:18on the planet, this guy loves Will Smith. So
- 24:21much so that when we recorded our very first
- 24:24podcast, he sat directly across from me wearing
- 24:28a shirt of Will Smith smacking Chris Rock in
- 24:31the face. That's a real thing. That's a real
- 24:33shirt. Dope -ass t -shirt, by the way. I never
- 24:36told you that. Great t -shirt. But the character
- 24:39of Hancock... Was a very dark Evil edgy type
- 24:45superhero, but still a superhero He had his flaws
- 24:48which some of them they showed in the movie But
- 24:51they never really got into the the details and
- 24:54specifics of how edgy and dark he is Some of
- 24:57the things in the subject matter surrounding
- 24:58how dark he is, I don't even feel comfortable
- 25:00saying on this podcast. So feel free to take
- 25:04a look into Hancock as a character and see how
- 25:06dark and edgy he was. And I feel like putting
- 25:09that in a movie, rating it R, would have done
- 25:11so much for Will Smith. It would have showed,
- 25:14we know he's got acting range, man. Like we get
- 25:16it, the dude played Muhammad Ali. We know that
- 25:19it could have been done. And seeing some of the
- 25:21darker comedies, darker superhero movies that
- 25:25have come about, I was very upset that they watered
- 25:31down that character and prevented him from letting
- 25:35Will Smith be the true representation of what
- 25:39that dark superhero actually is. And I'll end
- 25:42on this and then I'll let you go. To this day,
- 25:45we talked about Thanos being my favorite villain,
- 25:49fantastic villain. Hancock was, he's so close
- 25:55to the bad guy, but he's still technically a
- 25:58superhero. And I think that there was a lot of
- 26:00things that they could have done cinematically
- 26:02that would have accentuated that. And that's
- 26:04why I've deemed it my worst one. Okay. And again,
- 26:07I don't think it's a bad movie, but I think I
- 26:09know where you're coming from, that you wanted
- 26:11it to be more original. and do go all out. But
- 26:16I think - Respect what the character is. Don't
- 26:19water it down. Give us what we're here for. And
- 26:21I'm sure now the makers of that movie realize
- 26:25how well Deadpool did, and they're probably like,
- 26:28you know, we could have done that. We should
- 26:30have not, you know, on the side of caution, we
- 26:33should have went all out, gave it its full -
- 26:36And on the flip side, and I will say this as
- 26:39a counter to Deadpool, they - They're they're
- 26:44very they're very there. There's very sneaky
- 26:46when it came to Deadpool and here's why they
- 26:50With Deadpool they made him silly funny wacky
- 26:57Hancock's not those things now Deadpool as a
- 26:59character is right. Okay, you're saying they
- 27:01made oh, yeah That movie that the Deadpool movies
- 27:05are comedies. They are funny and Deservedly so
- 27:09that the character lends to that but Hancock
- 27:12is not bad, sir He is, it is raw, uncut, unfiltered,
- 27:18troubled superhero. Kind of like what, and I
- 27:21haven't watched it, but I've seen it, the superhero
- 27:23series, The Boys. I don't know if you've seen
- 27:26that. I've heard of it, yeah. So imagine that
- 27:30times 10. Super, super dark. That's what Hancock
- 27:34is feel free to look it up yourself. I promise
- 27:36you you won't be disappointed when you see just
- 27:38kind of the The swing and what they did with
- 27:41Hancock totally different totally different from
- 27:43what I expected. Okay All right, everyone as
- 27:52you know We like to end our podcast with something
- 27:54fun, something silly, something random. So what
- 27:57we're going to do is we're actually just going
- 27:59to mix this up, keep it movie themed. And we're
- 28:01going to go with something that is a recent movie
- 28:06disappointment or a surprise. Just kind of something
- 28:09that might have caught you off guard with a movie
- 28:11that you've seen. Kent, do you have anything
- 28:14off the top of your head? Yes. What do you got?
- 28:18So. We like to, you know, we talked about superhero,
- 28:21but we like to do other movies. You know, my
- 28:23son likes scary movies, you know, a little bit
- 28:27of suspense. So we sat down not too long ago.
- 28:31I don't remember when it was, but the more recent
- 28:33memory we, you know, and we got, we watched Trap.
- 28:37Never saw it. Okay. Josh Hartnett. Okay. So again,
- 28:41I don't want to get into spoilers, but the premise
- 28:44- Spoiler alert. Yeah. Spoiler alert. You know,
- 28:47the premise he - There is a killer on the loose
- 28:52He takes his daughter to this concert her favorite
- 28:55singer, right? The the I'm just gonna go through
- 29:01a few things that happen in this movie one. I'm
- 29:04not gonna give it away, but one thing is He randomly
- 29:08leaves his daughter throughout the concert to
- 29:12go check different areas of this arena Where
- 29:16the police are going? Then he disguises himself
- 29:19as, you know, a staff member. Then he talks to
- 29:22the T -shirt guy. He's got all these things.
- 29:25He's going around, right? Meanwhile, you know,
- 29:28the concert's going on. Then he goes to, you
- 29:30know, then he goes and then there's like a door.
- 29:33They're like watching the concert and he there's
- 29:35like a door to the floor that goes underneath
- 29:37the arena. And he literally says to his daughter,
- 29:42Hey, would you think it'd be cool to see the
- 29:47underneath the arena, the backstage area. Why
- 29:50don't we go down this door in the middle of a
- 29:53concert? You know what I mean? It was just so
- 29:57stupid that no normal person would do. And I
- 30:00get that in the movie what he's trying to do,
- 30:03right? He's scrambling, okay? Another part which
- 30:08was very funny and I still joke and we do quote
- 30:13this and I do reenact it a little bit. There's
- 30:16another friend of them at the, a girl that's
- 30:20a friend of his daughter's and the mom is with
- 30:22that daughter, right? And they're somewhere else
- 30:24sitting. And the little girl does something,
- 30:28right? And the mom says, calls her daughter,
- 30:32you little beast. And then immediately starts
- 30:35gyrating to the music. So I don't know if it
- 30:42was meant to be funny. But that whole that whole
- 30:46scene was so funny and it makes that movie so
- 30:49stupid Okay, the entire the entire movie premise
- 30:53I don't again not to go into every single detail
- 30:55But those are the moments right like could you
- 30:57know those are the little moments the acting
- 30:59okay? But it's that like are you serious that
- 31:03this was a movie made That's my disappointment
- 31:05and now and I think we'll both probably agree
- 31:08on the surprise, but I'm gonna let you go Hold
- 31:11on so I'm doing Am I do I have to do both cuz
- 31:14I don't have a surprise. Well, no, I have a surprise
- 31:16I have a surprise disappointment. So no, so I
- 31:19I don't have a disappointment Okay, I had a surprise
- 31:21for a movie that I did. Okay. I didn't have high
- 31:24expectations for okay, and When I watch movies,
- 31:29I I try to watch movies going in blind. I don't
- 31:32want to see any trailers Yeah, I don't want to
- 31:34read any reviews on it. I just I I hear a title
- 31:37of a movie Maybe I see the cast. I get a glimpse
- 31:40of something. And I'm like, you know what? I'm
- 31:42going to give it a shot. I'll watch it. So a
- 31:45movie that I watched was a movie that was actually,
- 31:48I can't remember if it was shot or directed,
- 31:51by one Zoe Kravitz, the daughter of music artist
- 31:55Lenny Kravitz. And she did a movie called Blink
- 32:00Twice. OK? And I had no expectations for this
- 32:04movie. It is very dark. It is very mean. It's
- 32:08an evil movie. And it wasn't pegged as like this
- 32:11horror movie. But it surprised me how well it
- 32:16was shot, how well it was written, how well the
- 32:20acting was done. And it's got a pretty good cast
- 32:23associated with it. It's got Channing Tatum is
- 32:27in it. It's a fantastic cinematic display of
- 32:33artistry. It was well done. But it surprised
- 32:37me in how well it was done, because I had no
- 32:40expectations for it. And then after the fact,
- 32:43I kind of saw that it was kind of crapped on
- 32:44a lot. A lot of people didn't like it. But it
- 32:47was a really, really good movie. It surprised
- 32:49the hell out of me. And maybe because my bar
- 32:52was so low. But the people who were saying that
- 32:55it was a bad movie, I don't know what movie they
- 32:56watched. It was incredible. And it's very hard
- 33:00to talk about it. without giving away any of
- 33:03the spoilers. But what I will say is it's not
- 33:05for children. And it is not for those that have
- 33:08a weak stomach or are offended by things that
- 33:14are of a sensitive nature. I'll just say it like
- 33:16that. But it was incredibly well done. And even
- 33:19though it was really edgy, they did the best
- 33:22that they could covering that type of subject
- 33:25matter. Really good stuff great watch, but no
- 33:28you definitely want to put the kids to bed. You
- 33:30don't want them watching that nobody twice I
- 33:33did see the trailer saw them theater, but I have
- 33:35not watched it yet. I think it's streaming now
- 33:38Yeah, I thought caught it on streaming very very
- 33:41very surprised man. It was it was a good It was
- 33:43a good watch, okay? I thought we would agree
- 33:45my surprise because you got me on this I don't
- 33:48know that I would have went to watch it. I wasn't
- 33:50sure I know My son wanted to watch it, so we
- 33:53did go see centers Really? And it's a surprise
- 33:57only, not so much a surprise, because when I
- 34:00went to see it, I already knew it was a success.
- 34:02Got it. But from the time it opened going back
- 34:05to that box office, you look and say, are people
- 34:07going to watch it? Yeah. Which doesn't make it
- 34:09good or bad, right? But then when it exploded.
- 34:13Like it just kept earning and kept earning and
- 34:16kept climbing and if you just said that movie
- 34:18is gonna earn damn near 300 million dollars you
- 34:21would have never thought it and it is one of
- 34:23the movies in recent history that You probably
- 34:27would have been like a maybe around a hundred
- 34:30million Okay, maybe 150 I can see that. And it
- 34:35probably overdid itself by 100 million at least.
- 34:39It did. And I will say, I saw Centers, and I
- 34:42think I did. I texted you and said, you need
- 34:44to go see it. It was another movie. Well done.
- 34:48Took a lot of risks. Took a lot of chances. And
- 34:51that was another movie I knew nothing about.
- 34:54Didn't either I had no idea what they move I
- 34:57knew who was in it I knew obviously the main
- 34:59actor Michael B Jordan was in it some of the
- 35:02the cast I knew but I didn't know what it was
- 35:04about and you know me I don't like period pieces.
- 35:07I don't like movies that are set in different
- 35:09other in different times This one captivated
- 35:12me early got me wrapped into it Sinners was it
- 35:15was a good surprise. I kind of had a feeling
- 35:18it was gonna be good But no, but that's a good
- 35:21one. And you're right. It went gangbusters, man.
- 35:24It took off. The way it took off was great. And
- 35:26obviously, social media had their fun with it,
- 35:28I'm sure. But that's what they do. But it ultimately
- 35:31helped. Even if people didn't like it, they still
- 35:34went and saw it to the tune, like you said, of
- 35:36a quarter billion dollars. And whatever you thought
- 35:38it was about, it might have been a little bit.
- 35:40But then it was... Yeah, you had no idea. No,
- 35:42you didn't. Damn good surprise. That's a good
- 35:43one, man. I'm mad I didn't think about it. That's
- 35:46a good one. Yeah, so there we go, guys. That's
- 35:56our first fanatically speaking movie pod. We're
