- 0:35Speaker 1: how you doing.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Hey, Mark, I'm doing well. Thank you. It's uh, you know,
- 0:39Speaker 2: by the way, I was there on Saturday night at
- 0:41Speaker 2: the White House correspondences are I'm still sort of shaking
- 0:44Speaker 2: from that discurity event.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Wow.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It was amazing and the President was really I mean
- 0:49Speaker 2: when I watched his press conference afterward, I couldn't believe,
- 0:52Speaker 2: but you know I was. I was so shaken by it.
- 0:54Speaker 2: And he was the one they were trying to shoot at,
- 0:56Speaker 2: and he got up there and at amazing. You know,
- 1:00Speaker 2: his composure and his courage under fire is really something
- 1:03Speaker 2: to be admired, whether whether you're a liberal conservative, and
- 1:06Speaker 2: no matter what your political philosophy, he's an amazing guy.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Yeah. One good thing about being an economist. You don't
- 1:12Speaker 1: get shot at a lot. It's not part of the.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Now. They're usually just verbal shout out.
- 1:20Speaker 1: When that chaos broke out, when did you realize that
- 1:24Speaker 1: there's not going to be any dinner, this is not
- 1:26Speaker 1: going to resume.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Well, first of all, Mark, there was. It was clearly
- 1:31Speaker 2: a security breach. You know, when I went, I've been
- 1:33Speaker 2: to about six or seven of those White House Correspondence
- 1:35Speaker 2: diners over the year years, and you know, there's twenty
- 1:39Speaker 2: five hundred people or so in that ballroom. And when
- 1:43Speaker 2: I went, I bought my I was a ticket at
- 1:45Speaker 2: a ticket I was sitting with the Wall Street Journal
- 1:46Speaker 2: people and I went in and I got there an
- 1:49Speaker 2: an hour in advance, because I thought there would be
- 1:51Speaker 2: a long line, like you know, the the you know,
- 1:54Speaker 2: Laguardi security line at the airport or something. And I
- 1:57Speaker 2: walked in five minutes and I just flashed my They said,
- 2:00Speaker 2: where's your ticket. I showed them in the ticket. They
- 2:02Speaker 2: didn't even ask me for an ID. I could have
- 2:03Speaker 2: given that ticket to a hobo on the street and
- 2:05Speaker 2: they could have gotten in, which I thought.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Was really weird.
- 2:09Speaker 2: And then you know that when I got into the ballroom,
- 2:15Speaker 2: you know, with these twenty five hundred other people were
- 2:16Speaker 2: probably about a hundred feet from where the President was.
- 2:19Speaker 2: You know, I was sort of surprised he came. I
- 2:22Speaker 2: thought he would maybe at the end of the dinner
- 2:24Speaker 2: come in and give his remarks, you know, is because
- 2:26Speaker 2: of humorous speech, and then lead, well, he was sitting
- 2:29Speaker 2: up there on the stage right in the middle. I thought, oh,
- 2:32Speaker 2: my god, he's just sitting duck in case anyone was
- 2:35Speaker 2: able to get a you know, if a sniper somehow
- 2:37Speaker 2: got in there. And so I had this weird premonition
- 2:40Speaker 2: that this didn't seem that safe to me. And then
- 2:42Speaker 2: we had the boom boom, and everybody freaked out, and
- 2:46Speaker 2: you know, some people called beneath the tables, and I
- 2:49Speaker 2: crouched down. I was looking over the president to make
- 2:51Speaker 2: sure he was safe. And right then, I mean, the
- 2:54Speaker 2: service here, servis were amazing. They got him out of
- 2:56Speaker 2: there in about twenty seconds. But did you see the
- 2:59Speaker 2: tape of him and they're pushing him out. They have
- 3:01Speaker 2: seen this that he stumbles, you know, I think he
- 3:04Speaker 2: tripped because they were trying to push him out so fast.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And I thought, oh my god. All I saw was
- 3:08Speaker 2: him stumble. I thought, oh my god, he's been hit,
- 3:10Speaker 2: you know. And so for about the long was ten
- 3:13Speaker 2: or fifteen minutes of my life, we didn't know what
- 3:15Speaker 2: was going on. We didn't know whether the president was safe.
- 3:17Speaker 2: And then they finally told us, you know, the president
- 3:19Speaker 2: was safely escorted out of the building. But you know,
- 3:23Speaker 2: it was people were pretty calm for the most part.
- 3:25Speaker 2: For the first five minutes. It was pretty scary because
- 3:27Speaker 2: he didn't know whether there was a sniper with a
- 3:29Speaker 2: rifle in there.
- 3:30Speaker 1: So nobody asked you for any ID. Did you get searched.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Did they search everybody.
- 3:36Speaker 2: For Well no, we did go through a metal detector
- 3:38Speaker 2: like at an airport.
- 3:39Speaker 1: But yeah, but you got to search people well you
- 3:41Speaker 1: could have had something on you.
- 3:44Speaker 2: They didn't do that. It was the other thing that
- 3:47Speaker 2: was really odd about it, Mark, was that you've probably
- 3:49Speaker 2: read about this because I was commenting about it. The
- 3:52Speaker 2: President was on the stage, the vice president was on
- 3:54Speaker 2: the stage. At the table next to me was the
- 3:56Speaker 2: Speaker of the House. There were four cabinet officers. Five
- 3:58Speaker 2: of the six people in line succession for the presidency
- 4:01Speaker 2: were in that room. It made no sense to me.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's like they need State of the Union
- 4:06Speaker 1: level security, that kind of security. But wow, well glad
- 4:10Speaker 1: everybody's okay.
- 4:11Speaker 2: This is, by the way, why Trump is right. We've
- 4:13Speaker 2: got to build the ballroom which will be very safe
- 4:15Speaker 2: and secure, and Trump can do those kinds of events,
- 4:17Speaker 2: or the future presidents will be able to do those
- 4:19Speaker 2: kind of speeches in a safe environment. And incidentally, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: I know you probably want to talk about the economy,
- 4:25Speaker 2: but you know the significance of that Washington Hilton Mark
- 4:30Speaker 2: which was that's where in March of nineteen eighty one,
- 4:32Speaker 2: Ronald Reagan was shot. And I'll never forget that day either.
- 4:36Speaker 2: And I was a kid at the teenager at that time,
- 4:38Speaker 2: but you know, the I walked right in the entrance
- 4:42Speaker 2: of that hotel where Reagan was walking out where he
- 4:45Speaker 2: got shot by Hinkley. So that's the second time now
- 4:49Speaker 2: we've had a you know, attempted assassination attempt in that hotel.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah, there's two assassination attempt They got to make sure
- 4:55Speaker 1: that they never use that hotel again. I mean, it's
- 4:57Speaker 1: just ridiculous. Just changed the name of the assassination Hilton.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I mean, how many buildings have had two assassinations take
- 5:06Speaker 1: attempts to take place? Just awful. So now the king
- 5:10Speaker 1: is still in Virginia. Did we learn anything from this
- 5:13Speaker 1: king's visit? Did do anybody any good?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Well, you know, first of all, I mean this is
- 5:20Speaker 2: a king who is It is really heartbreaking to see
- 5:23Speaker 2: what has happened to the British Empire. I mean, what
- 5:26Speaker 2: was once the strongest nation in the world. Basically their
- 5:30Speaker 2: economy is basically staggering right now, it's comatose. They've had
- 5:37Speaker 2: very little economic growth while our economy is exploded. Over
- 5:40Speaker 2: the last thirty years, We've beaten them in every sphere
- 5:44Speaker 2: of the economy, including the technology industry. And now they've
- 5:47Speaker 2: got basically a socialist as their prime minister in King
- 5:51Speaker 2: Charles All he seems to care about climate change.
- 5:55Speaker 1: He's the king. Yeah, so oil prices spiked briefly, went
- 6:03Speaker 1: up to one twenty six, it's down to one hundred.
- 6:07Speaker 1: This closing the Straight of Hormose, it really doesn't hurt us.
- 6:10Speaker 1: We don't get any oil from there. It completely destroys
- 6:13Speaker 1: the ram's economy. Why not just leave it closed for
- 6:16Speaker 1: a couple of months.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Well, you know, you're right that the two countries that
- 6:20Speaker 2: are most dependent on oil from the Middle East are China.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And India, and we don't We didn't get very little.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Although you know that when that strait is closed, as
- 6:29Speaker 2: we've learned, it affects the entire global price of oil
- 6:33Speaker 2: because it's a global commodity like gold is. But we
- 6:36Speaker 2: got to get it open. We got to get it
- 6:38Speaker 2: open quickly. And when we do, I don't know if
- 6:40Speaker 2: it's good, you know, I've been saying in a few weeks,
- 6:42Speaker 2: but who knows. At this point it's proven to be
- 6:45Speaker 2: a lot harder than we had thought. Then I think
- 6:48Speaker 2: we'll see, you know, gas prices migrate back down to
- 6:50Speaker 2: the you know, three to three twenty five a gallon,
- 6:54Speaker 2: and it has to happen because it's really hurting the economy.
- 6:57Speaker 2: We're seeing it migrate into other high prices. So we
- 7:01Speaker 2: want to keep inflation down. We want affordability high. Uh,
- 7:05Speaker 2: And that's why we've got and infinitely mark on that.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Thank god, we have a president who's drill, baby, drill.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Can you imagine if we had died in an office
- 7:13Speaker 2: and we weren't producing our oil and gas, I mean,
- 7:15Speaker 2: we would be paying nine dollars a gallon of gas.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It's and also, by the way, it is it is
- 7:21Speaker 2: a pretty amazing thing that the UAE has now dropped
- 7:25Speaker 2: out of Opek. I think it's Trump and the and
- 7:29Speaker 2: the shale oil and gas people who really who finally
- 7:35Speaker 2: have blown up Opak.
- 7:37Speaker 1: So if we get rid of this happy day, Yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 1: we get rid of this terrorist regime in Iran, which
- 7:41Speaker 1: would be a dream come true, and we get rid
- 7:43Speaker 1: of Opek, what will the future look like price wise,
- 7:47Speaker 1: oil wise? That could be amazing.
- 7:49Speaker 2: You know, look, there's so much oil and gas, and
- 7:51Speaker 2: I remember people used to worry about we're running out
- 7:53Speaker 2: oil and gas. We're not running out of it, we're
- 7:54Speaker 2: running into it. So you could see gas prices go
- 7:57Speaker 2: back well below three dollars a gallon and that that.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Would be a wonderful thing.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And we're the world's you know, leading producer today. So uh,
- 8:06Speaker 2: this is this is we got to use all the
- 8:08Speaker 2: energy we have oil, gas, nuclear power, coal, maybe when
- 8:12Speaker 2: when appropriate, solar and when use it all so we're
- 8:15Speaker 2: not no longer you know, depending on them in the
- 8:19Speaker 2: least oil.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Hey, Steve Moore, this fraud that we saw in Minnesota,
- 8:23Speaker 1: we've uncovered this fraud a couple of billions. Well, it
- 8:26Speaker 1: looks now like we're going to find hundreds of billions
- 8:29Speaker 1: of this kind of fraud all over America, all over government.
- 8:33Speaker 1: How did how did that?
- 8:34Speaker 2: Well?
- 8:34Speaker 1: That covered up?
- 8:35Speaker 2: So yeah, that's a great Yeah, that's a great point.
- 8:37Speaker 2: And the US General Accounting Office, which is the basically
- 8:41Speaker 2: the official auditor of all these trillions of dollars that
- 8:44Speaker 2: we spend in Washington, they just did a report yesterday
- 8:47Speaker 2: reporting I think it was one hundred and eighty five
- 8:49Speaker 2: billion dollars in fraudulent payments. Now mark those are only
- 8:53Speaker 2: the fraudulent payments that they know about. It's probably two
- 8:57Speaker 2: or three times higher. People got away with the fraustulent
- 8:59Speaker 2: pays So we have so much waste. I believe that
- 9:03Speaker 2: we could cut one trillion dollars out of our budget
- 9:06Speaker 2: if we got rid of fraud, duplication, if we got
- 9:08Speaker 2: rid of quote what they call quote improper payments. Don't
- 9:12Speaker 2: you love that improper? If you got rid of all
- 9:15Speaker 2: of that, we could balance this damn budget.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, mom, Donnie's building his own grocery store.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Every major grocery company tells you it's about two million
- 9:25Speaker 1: to open a store. He's spending thirty This is just
- 9:28Speaker 1: more fraud. Why we had to form a government agency
- 9:32Speaker 1: that can just swoop in and stop that for when
- 9:34Speaker 1: it happens.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Well, shame on you, Mark. Don't you understand the warrant
- 9:39Speaker 2: for socialism, I mean the idea. By the way, they've
- 9:44Speaker 2: tried this before, folks. It was in Russia during the
- 9:47Speaker 2: Soviet Union, where you know, you could get anything you
- 9:49Speaker 2: wanted for a low price at at the grocery store.
- 9:51Speaker 2: But of course you had to wait for an hour
- 9:53Speaker 2: and a half to get into the store. And then
- 9:54Speaker 2: when you got the store there was nothing on the shelves,
- 9:56Speaker 2: but it was all really cheap.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and I don't know, I saw the pictures. This
- 10:00Speaker 1: is one dumpy location in the middle of nowhere. Thirty
- 10:04Speaker 1: million to build this Whole Food spends two million when
- 10:07Speaker 1: they build a new store.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
