- 0:00Back on the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show the start of another busy week as we
- 0:04have another coaches show tomorrow. We'll visit with Gino Oriama tomorrow night from six
- 0:09to seven on the Women's Basketball Coaches Show. Hopefully KK Arnold will join us,
- 0:13and then we have two basketball games on Wednesday, Dan Hurley Thursday,
- 0:18Hockey Friday, and then yeah, it just continues all the action here on
- 0:21the Yukon Sports Network and the Varsity Network app and the Varsity Network dot com
- 0:26Mapisqually is your third goaltender? Very valuable piece. I don't think people realize
- 0:32how valuable, more so in practice. But he's a guy that you could
- 0:35plug in if you need it on that for sure. Yeah, he's outstanding.
- 0:39He's just been a solid guy for us for four years. He's so
- 0:43well respected in the locker room. He has really good insight. Like a
- 0:48lot of times after a game, I'll ask him his thoughts on the game,
- 0:52and his insight is just fantastics. Do you see him being a coach
- 0:57somewhere down the road? No, I see him being on Wall Street is
- 1:00where I say him. He does what he doesn't want to do. This
- 1:04job he'll make a lot of money at some point. He's uh, he's
- 1:10just great and he's beloved by all the guys on the team as well.
- 1:15One of the young guys that we have not seen yet is Bower Swept freshman
- 1:19defenseman from West Hartford. So what have you seen with him in the program
- 1:23over the course of these few months. Well, he didn't. He just
- 1:26started practicing again after Christmas, so he was had a issue of health issue
- 1:34that where he couldn't play for basically the whole first half. So he's just
- 1:38getting back now. And he's a big kid, and he skates well and
- 1:42he competes. So I'm looking forward to seeing what he can bring more often
- 1:47on a daily basis. Mike, You've got Maine coming in this weekend.
- 1:49Ranks seventh in the country. Seven to three was the score up there.
- 1:53But as you told us the night after the game on the Coaches Show,
- 1:57it was a game that it was basically a synopsis of the entire first half
- 2:00the season for your team. Boy, an impressive group set of twins and
- 2:05ADU boys. They're off to the fantastic start. They basically have helped turn
- 2:09things around for Ben Barr's team. In his third year. Yeah, they're
- 2:13actually not twins, but they play like twins. Okay, No, I
- 2:17think Josh is older than brad I think I think Josh is an O three
- 2:21and Bradley's a five. They've played together forever for a long time. They're
- 2:27outstanding players. With Lyndon Breen, that line is arguably one of the best
- 2:30lines in the in the country. And uh yeah, they've been on a
- 2:37heater too. I think they've won seven in a row, so they've They're
- 2:42a really good team. They've got two good goaltenders that they play on a
- 2:46you know, consistent basis. The defensemen are very, very mobile, and
- 2:51they have other guys up front that are big and strong too, so they
- 2:53pose a lot of challenges for your team, you know. But you know,
- 3:00I thought, as I said, we didn't play poorly when we played
- 3:04up there. It was just they were very opportunistic and we're going to have
- 3:08to certainly do a better job when the NATO's are on the ISS for sure.
- 3:13The way that conference play is set up, this is the first time
- 3:16that you are playing No I take that back. You played U mass Lowl
- 3:20a couple of weeks after playing them once So, what's it like to have
- 3:23tape on a team and it's not Okay, it's Saturday morning, we have
- 3:25tape from last night. What's it like to be able to have a couple
- 3:29of weeks removed from a result that you had against a team like this?
- 3:34Are you asking like, how much will we look back at the game against
- 3:37them? A little bit? I think it's more. I think we'd probably
- 3:42be more focused on how they played and what they did against Colgate than necessarily
- 3:46what they did against US. I think teams, you know, throughout the
- 3:51course of a season, they changed so much during the course of a season,
- 3:55and lines, combinations can change, and that can and give a whole
- 4:00different dynamic to a team. So I think we'll probably be more focused on
- 4:04what they did this past weekend. Twitter question here, what's the goalie situation
- 4:09look like moving forward? It sounds like Ethan's pretty much in entrenched himself as
- 4:13the number one. Yeah, yeah, but our Sinny's still a really good
- 4:15goalie and he's proven that he can win in this league, So I'm not
- 4:19writing off our Sinny either. He's had strung some good practices together here lately,
- 4:26and yeah, Ethan has played very very well, and as of right
- 4:30now, he'd probably be the one, but our Sinny's won a like he's
- 4:36right there. When you when you think back to that game against Maine's what's
- 4:44one thing that you did do really well that night where you're thinking, okay,
- 4:47we do want to replicate at least this part of it. Yeah,
- 4:49I thought we played well in the offensive zone. I thought we were able
- 4:54to get some multiple shot shifts and put some put them under some pressure.
- 5:00That's something that we're gonna have to continue to do. And if we're playing
- 5:03well, it doesn't matter who we're playing, We've got to be able to
- 5:06do that. We've got to be a team that cannot be just really a
- 5:12score off the rush or you know, one and done type offensive. His
- 5:15own play. It can't be you know, you win a battle, you
- 5:18kick it to the point, there's a shot, there's a rebound and they're
- 5:21going the other way. It's going to be there's a rebound. You got
- 5:25to go get that rebound and keep the offensive his own play alive. Jake
- 5:30is out of them a fire firecracker right now. He's got a five game
- 5:33point streak games and four goals and four straight games and before he got on
- 5:39that streak, it was all about the empty netters, had a nice one
- 5:42against you, Massull, the win, the winning the stores. Yeah.
- 5:44But Jake, I mean, it just seems like he's a little more mature
- 5:46and and just more confident right now. And then you know, like it's
- 5:50a funny game because last year I think there was four or five games.
- 5:55I remember it was a frozen Fenway and there was the opener here at Ta
- 5:59Sky, I know, and where he I think four or five games in
- 6:01a row, we hit a post and you know, if it's an inch
- 6:05left or inch right, it's going in. And he has another he has
- 6:09a four or five game point streak or a goal streak like he has right
- 6:13now. Right now, he's playing the same way, and he's just brings
- 6:17so much energy to the game and whatever line he's playing on, he uh
- 6:25is able to get those guys to play at his pace, which is,
- 6:29you know, really important for our team. One thing you're gonna hear from
- 6:31Jake too. I mean, this is a young man that came up and
- 6:33he learned to do the dirty things and the things that you don't necessarily see
- 6:36on the score sheet to get playing time, and that includes killing penalties.
- 6:41Is that a big reason why he's been so successful in that department? Yeah,
- 6:44no question. And you know his dad's a coach. His coaches in
- 6:46Avon, and he has probably learned a lot of the habits that a coach's
- 6:50son learns, and he does those little things. He's got a fantastic stick.
- 6:56His stick is always on the ice in a lane and he's deflexed a
- 7:00ton of bucks. So for Jake, he's a sophomore. So how far
- 7:04back have you had a relationship with his father. I haven't really, I
- 7:10didn't. We saw him play out in the USHL and I thought he had
- 7:14a pretty good game, And when I went down to look see who he
- 7:16was, it just so happened that he was a local kid. And I
- 7:20said, but he went to Millbrook, so he really wasn't around here.
- 7:25He went there for a couple of years, and then when he went out
- 7:27to the USHL, that's where we saw him. All Right, speaking Jake,
- 7:30we will hear from him next to we'll let Mike take a break here.
- 7:33We'll have Jake Percival and then Joey Muldowney. Interviews that I did earlier
- 7:38today via zoom as you're listening to the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show from Bear Smokehouse
- 7:42Barbecue here on Learfields
