Transcript
- 0:07Suze: November 23, 2025. Welcome everybody to the Women and Money
- 0:12Suze: podcast as well as everybody smart enough to listen. Today
- 0:16Suze: is Suze School, so get out your Suze notebooks.
- 0:21Suze: You know, I've been doing this now for 40 years.
- 0:26Suze: And over those 40 years I have watched these markets
- 0:31Suze: go way up and I have watched them go way down.
- 0:37Suze: But I've always known one thing.
- 0:41Suze: That if you are invested in good quality stocks, if
- 0:46Suze: you are invested and you have a plan in the
- 0:49Suze: areas and you are diversified enough that you're not just
- 0:53Suze: all in one sector.
- 0:56Suze: That over time, you will make a significant amount of money.
- 1:03Suze: I've always said to you, you are only to invest
- 1:07Suze: in the stock market if you have at least five, 10,
- 1:12Suze: 15 years or longer, truthfully.
- 1:15Suze: Where you don't need the money and the minimum there
- 1:19Suze: was five years. And why five years because normally it
- 1:24Suze: will take five years from the top of something like
- 1:28Suze: the market to go all the way down to the
- 1:31Suze: bottom and then all the way back up again.
- 1:36Suze: So I could quote you numbers, I could give you examples,
- 1:39Suze: I can give you all of that.
- 1:42Suze: But we could also talk about where many of you
- 1:45Suze: probably are, emotionally and financially speaking at this moment in time.
- 1:52Suze: We have had an extraordinary run, extraordinary with stocks like Palantir, IONQ,
- 2:01Suze: and others with the Mag 7. Extraordinary run.
- 2:07Suze: And in the last week especially, we've watched a stock
- 2:12Suze: like Palantir.
- 2:15Suze: Go from, actually last two weeks, from 207 down to 170,
- 2:20Suze: back up again a little, and then last week down
- 2:24Suze: to as low as 147 and end at about 150
- 2:29Suze: something and who knows how low it can go.
- 2:35Suze: You've watched IONQ do the exact same thing, go from
- 2:39Suze: the high of approximately $85 a share all the way
- 2:43Suze: down to $41 where it is right now. Of course,
- 2:49Suze: when you look at both those stocks within this 52
- 2:53Suze: week period, they started IONQ at about 17.88.
- 2:59Suze: You saw Palantir this year, in just this year, everybody,
- 3:05Suze: you saw it as low.
- 3:08Suze: At $63 a share when we really started talking about it,
- 3:12Suze: it was at $7.
- 3:14Suze: So there is a law of money which is look
- 3:18Suze: at what you have, not at what you had. The
- 3:21Suze: biggest mistake you will ever make in life when it
- 3:25Suze: comes to investing is when you say to yourself, if
- 3:29Suze: only I had.
- 3:31Suze: If only I had sold Palantir at 207. If only I
- 3:35Suze: had sold IONQ in the 80s, look at the money
- 3:39Suze: I would have made.
- 3:42Suze: I have said over and over again on this podcast
- 3:46Suze: that it's not until you sell, that you have made
- 3:51Suze: that money, and what's most important for you to do
- 3:56Suze: when you are investing is not really what you could
- 4:00Suze: have made, but take an honest look at what you
- 4:03Suze: actually have made. What did you buy those stocks at?
- 4:09Suze: Are you still up considerably, like over 100% or whatever?
- 4:14Suze: But you're upset because you're no longer up maybe 200%
- 4:18Suze: or whatever it may be.
- 4:21Suze: That will be your downfall if you spend time going,
- 4:27Suze: I wish it would go up. I want it to
- 4:29Suze: go back up. I liked knowing how much money I had.
- 4:33Suze: You have to look at what you have and for
- 4:36Suze: those of you who bought IONQ or Palantir or the
- 4:39Suze: other Mag 7 or whatever it is that you bought
- 4:42Suze: at the top.
- 4:44Suze: And now you're down. Here's what I can tell you.
- 4:48Suze: A good quality stock, and those are great quality stocks,
- 4:52Suze: your NVIDIAs are great. They are great.
- 4:56Suze: Will always come back over time, which is why dollar
- 5:03Suze: cost averaging is so very important. And have we not
- 5:08Suze: said
- 5:09Suze: that the way you want to invest is through dollar
- 5:13Suze: cost averaging, and you always want to leave enough money
- 5:17Suze: there so that when something does go down like they
- 5:21Suze: are going down now, you're able to take advantage of
- 5:25Suze: it and if it goes down further, you're able to
- 5:27Suze: take advantage of it and you just stick with it.
- 5:31Suze: But let's just say you're in a situation where.
- 5:36Suze: You don't have any more money to invest. You have
- 5:39Suze: put it all in there, and now what do you do?
- 5:44Suze: Now you just stick it out, believe it or not.
- 5:49Suze: Unless the stock itself has changed, unless what they're doing
- 5:55Suze: has changed, you just stick with it, and it will
- 6:00Suze: eventually go way back up and above where you are
- 6:04Suze: right now. Now we could go into recession. We could
- 6:08Suze: have a lot of those stocks go way back down
- 6:11Suze: even more.
- 6:12Suze: But overall,
- 6:15Suze: as long as you are totally in other areas as well,
- 6:20Suze: which is why I always said for those of you
- 6:23Suze: who don't own a whole lot of stocks, you don't
- 6:26Suze: have that type of diversification. There's nothing wrong with owning
- 6:31Suze: a Standard and Poor's 500 index for the majority of
- 6:34Suze: your money or 50% of your money, and then put
- 6:37Suze: a little more money in those four or five other stocks.
- 6:41Suze: That we were thinking were really going to continue up
- 6:44Suze: and wanted to and probably will.
- 6:48Suze: So with that in mind,
- 6:51Suze: we were also talking last week on the Women and
- 6:54Suze: Money podcast, and we had Fritzy, Fitzy with us, Keith Fitz-Gerald,
- 7:00Suze: and we introduced one of Keith's absolutely favorite things to
- 7:05Suze: do called a free trade.
- 7:08Suze: And in introducing that concept, a lot of you got very,
- 7:13Suze: very confused.
- 7:15Suze: And one of you wrote me and you said, do
- 7:18Suze: you do a free trade, Suze? Is that what you do?
- 7:24Suze: And I want to set the record straight on who
- 7:27Suze: does this free trade and who does not, because a
- 7:31Suze: free trade, and a free trade by the way, everybody is,
- 7:35Suze: you invest money, you've now made 100% on your money.
- 7:42Suze: You need to sell half of your position, and take
- 7:46Suze: your money off the table that you invested, and then
- 7:49Suze: just see what happens.
- 7:52Suze: Now, I don't think that's a bad idea on any level,
- 7:56Suze: if and only if,
- 8:00Suze: this is money that you may need. This is really
- 8:04Suze: important money for you to maybe have to access within
- 8:08Suze: five years or whatever it may be, or if you
- 8:11Suze: are a nervous investor.
- 8:14Suze: And you are an investor that doesn't know quite what
- 8:17Suze: to do and just gets afraid. If that is who
- 8:21Suze: you are,
- 8:23Suze: then you should absolutely do a free trade at least once.
- 8:29Suze: Should you, in my opinion, continue to do a free
- 8:33Suze: trade every time it doubles?
- 8:37Suze: Actually, if you are an investor that has time on
- 8:41Suze: their side, I don't believe that.
- 8:45Suze: I think if you have taken your money off at
- 8:48Suze: least once.
- 8:50Suze: OK, from that point on, maybe you want to let it
- 8:53Suze: ride forever. If you're an investor who isn't nervous, who
- 8:58Suze: isn't afraid, you never have to do a free trade.
- 9:03Suze: Have I ever done a free trade? And the answer
- 9:07Suze: to that is no.
- 9:09Suze: Did I take 10% off the table of Palantir when
- 9:14Suze: Keith said to do so? I absolutely did. Did I
- 9:19Suze: do it the first time that he said to take
- 9:22Suze: it off the table? I absolutely did. And then I
- 9:27Suze: saved that money. And then when Palantir did happen to
- 9:32Suze: go down from the points that I took that 10% off,
- 9:36Suze: I bought back in.
- 9:39Suze: Because I want to own that stock. I want to
- 9:44Suze: own IONQ. I don't want to limit my position, so...
- 9:50Suze: Another thing you have to take into consideration, it is very,
- 9:56Suze: very different if you have money in a Roth retirement account.
- 10:01Suze: Even a traditional retirement account, an IRA.
- 10:05Suze: And if you own these stocks in an investment account
- 10:10Suze: that is subject to taxes.
- 10:14Suze: Because you have to make a decision. Oh my God,
- 10:18Suze: if I take money off the table, what does that
- 10:21Suze: do to my income tax bracket overall? Are you already
- 10:26Suze: in a higher income tax bracket if you bought a
- 10:29Suze: lot of shares of stock outside of a retirement account
- 10:33Suze: and now it has doubled.
- 10:36Suze: And you take 50% off, and you haven't even owned
- 10:39Suze: it in a year.
- 10:41Suze: A year that would qualify you for long term capital
- 10:44Suze: gains and it's going to be taxed to you as
- 10:47Suze: ordinary income simply by taking the money off the table.
- 10:53Suze: Have you lost it anyway because you gave half of
- 10:56Suze: that to the government and then gave yourself a higher
- 11:01Suze: income tax bracket overall?
- 11:03Suze: So it's never just so simple. There is no rule
- 11:07Suze: that is hard and fast. All of you have individual personalities,
- 11:14Suze: individual comfort levels, individual tax brackets, individual situations as to
- 11:21Suze: where you bought this stock to begin with, individual goals,
- 11:26Suze: and all of that has to be taken into consideration.
- 11:31Suze: So, a lot of times when you do a podcast
- 11:34Suze: or whatever it may be, you're on TV, you talk
- 11:37Suze: to the majority of people that are out there.
- 11:41Suze: And you introduce an idea to everybody.
- 11:45Suze: So, investing is a very individual thing.
- 11:49Suze: And I have tried to teach you.
- 11:52Suze: That you have to do what's right for you. You
- 11:56Suze: have to have enough knowledge in what you are doing
- 11:59Suze: and what you want to do.
- 12:02Suze: So that when somebody introduces an idea or whatever you go, oh,
- 12:06Suze: I like that. I should do that.
- 12:09Suze: Now somebody, by the way, was listening. One of my
- 12:13Suze: neighbors here on the island that we live, and she
- 12:17Suze: listened to it, and she wrote me, I really needed
- 12:19Suze: to hear that because I have a 1,000% gain in NVIDIA,
- 12:24Suze: and I really should take some of that off.
- 12:27Suze: And the reason probably is, is that now makes up
- 12:31Suze: too big of a position in her entire portfolio, so
- 12:36Suze: you are not to look at your portfolio as one
- 12:40Suze: or two stocks. You are to look at your portfolio
- 12:44Suze: as to all the money that you have invested, and
- 12:48Suze: do you have it invested in such a way that
- 12:51Suze: you have cushions for yourself.
- 12:54Suze: Cushion that if one area really goes down, maybe the
- 12:58Suze: other stays stable or whatever. Now there will be times
- 13:01Suze: when the entire market goes down, like in 2008, and
- 13:06Suze: there is nothing you can do about it except dollar
- 13:09Suze: cost average back into it and wait for time to
- 13:13Suze: correct it.
- 13:15Suze: So, these are very important things that I'm telling you,
- 13:19Suze: and it's not just the stock market. Bitcoin has absolutely
- 13:25Suze: been obliterated. It broke its support levels, it's absolutely down
- 13:30Suze: in the 80,000s, down from like 134. It is down significantly.
- 13:36Suze: Does that bother me? No. Do I look at that
- 13:40Suze: as an opportunity to invest and buy more? I do.
- 13:46Suze: However, I don't plan to touch that money for years.
- 13:51Suze: I don't plan to touch Palantir for years. I don't
- 13:55Suze: plan to touch my portfolio for years. Now, for those
- 14:00Suze: of you who need your money to generate income for you.
- 14:07Suze: Then have I not always said to you dividend paying
- 14:10Suze: stocks are the way to go because you will get
- 14:14Suze: growth and you will get possibly a higher interest rate
- 14:19Suze: than what bonds and CDs and other things are going
- 14:23Suze: to give you.
- 14:26Suze: And that is the way that you should go, and
- 14:30Suze: you should still go that way, but if you're just
- 14:34Suze: simply investing.
- 14:36Suze: And you're nervous about it, and you bought a dividend
- 14:39Suze: paying stock, but the dividend paying stock now is going down.
- 14:44Suze: Then you have to really look at yourself in the
- 14:46Suze: mirror and just maybe you are somebody who only belongs
- 14:51Suze: in treasuries, in certificates of deposits, in individual bonds, in
- 14:57Suze: things that make you feel secure, since the goal of
- 15:01Suze: money is for you to be secure.
- 15:04Suze: And the biggest mistakes are made when you are not secure,
- 15:08Suze: when you are afraid, like if you have been selling
- 15:11Suze: and you're selling now, you're making, in my opinion, if
- 15:15Suze: you have years till you need this money, you are
- 15:18Suze: and will be making one of the biggest mistakes ever.
- 15:22Suze: And it's because they want you to sell.
- 15:26Suze: I still think, and I don't care what anybody tells me,
- 15:30Suze: that this market is still on some level being pushed down.
- 15:36Suze: And it's being pushed down and it will be continued
- 15:38Suze: to be pushed down until all the people who are
- 15:42Suze: so afraid they actually got out, when that happens, that's
- 15:46Suze: when this market will go back up. Will it go
- 15:50Suze: back up with the velocity that it went up before
- 15:53Suze: some of these AI stocks? Maybe yes, maybe no.
- 15:58Suze: But that's not the point.
- 16:01Suze: The point isn't about how fast is your money going
- 16:04Suze: to return. How long are you going to have to
- 16:06Suze: wait until it's back up there again? And then chances
- 16:10Suze: are when it's back up there again, you may absolutely
- 16:12Suze: probably just go, I'm selling it here. I should have
- 16:15Suze: sold before. I'm selling it here, and then all of
- 16:18Suze: a sudden it's at 400 two years from now, and
- 16:20Suze: you're going, Why did I sell?
- 16:23Suze: This is not a financial roller coaster for you to
- 16:27Suze: want to ride on.
- 16:29Suze: This is where you stand on the sidelines and you
- 16:33Suze: look at the roller coaster and you watch it go
- 16:36Suze: up and you watch it go down, and you take
- 16:39Suze: joy in knowing that you are invested properly.
- 16:44Suze: And that maybe you do have some more money that
- 16:47Suze: you could dollar cost average into and take advantage of it,
- 16:51Suze: or you know you're invested properly and you just stay there. However,
- 16:56Suze: with that said, we are also entering the very end
- 17:01Suze: of this year.
- 17:03Suze: So what am I doing?
- 17:05Suze: I'm actually, ready for this? I am looking at all
- 17:09Suze: the stocks or any position that I do have that
- 17:14Suze: I have a loss in.
- 17:17Suze: And I am going to take that loss this year,
- 17:22Suze: then I'm going to offset it.
- 17:24Suze: With stocks that I have maybe a tremendous gain in,
- 17:30Suze: let me just give you Palantir as an example.
- 17:33Suze: I have an extraordinary gain in Palantir. Because my cost
- 17:37Suze: base is really, when it's all said and done, is
- 17:40Suze: like in the 40s.
- 17:43Suze: So I'm still up considerably on Palantir.
- 17:49Suze: I have stocks that I have a loss in, certain
- 17:53Suze: things that just didn't work out.
- 17:56Suze: I will sell 100% of those shares I have a
- 18:00Suze: loss in.
- 18:02Suze: Then whatever that amount of money is, I will sell
- 18:07Suze: those shares of Palantir right now when I do this
- 18:11Suze: to 100% offset that loss.
- 18:15Suze: So, if I have a $10,000 loss, I will sell
- 18:19Suze: enough shares of Palantir, where I have a $10,000 gain.
- 18:24Suze: Did that make sense? And then I will immediately turn
- 18:29Suze: around and buy those shares of Palantir back. Now what
- 18:34Suze: I have done is on those particular shares I have
- 18:39Suze: increased my cost basis from possibly $40 a share to
- 18:45Suze: $150 a share so that as Palantir continues to go up.
- 18:51Suze: My cost basis on those shares will be 150, so
- 18:56Suze: when I do sell in the future,
- 19:00Suze: my gain won't be as big and therefore I won't
- 19:03Suze: owe as much in taxes. Did that make sense? The
- 19:08Suze: stocks that I have a loss in, I cannot buy
- 19:12Suze: them back for at least 30 days because there is
- 19:15Suze: a 30 day wash rule. You cannot sell a stock
- 19:18Suze: at a loss, take it off your taxes, but buy
- 19:20Suze: it back right away. You have to wait 30 days. Now.
- 19:24Suze: Will I buy those stocks back or not? I may not.
- 19:27Suze: I very well may not.
- 19:29Suze: And I may take that money and put it in
- 19:33Suze: something that is making more sense for me at this
- 19:37Suze: particular situation. Now I hope I just didn't make your
- 19:40Suze: head spin, but there's always something that you can do
- 19:45Suze: to help with what's just happened, to look at that
- 19:49Suze: given that we are coming up at the end of
- 19:51Suze: the tax year for those of you who own stocks
- 19:56Suze: outside of a retirement account.
- 19:58Suze: Inside of a retirement account, you're lucky, because normally you
- 20:04Suze: don't pay taxes on the gains or whatever, especially if
- 20:08Suze: it's a Roth, you don't get to take the losses off,
- 20:11Suze: but in a retirement account, every year you usually have
- 20:15Suze: money going into it if it's an IRA you usually
- 20:19Suze: fund it to the max, and then you can dollar
- 20:23Suze: cost average into these stocks in a 401k.
- 20:28Suze: You have more money coming in every single month, and
- 20:32Suze: therefore you're automatically dollar cost averaging, so that's a good thing.
- 20:39Suze: It is very important that every single one of you
- 20:42Suze: knows your cost basis in your stocks.
- 20:47Suze: In your ETFs you have to know your cost basis. Otherwise,
- 20:54Suze: how do you know how much you're up? How do
- 20:57Suze: you know how much you're down?
- 21:01Suze: So, you need to get yourself a program that every
- 21:05Suze: time you buy something, you enter it into this program,
- 21:09Suze: it averages it for you, and all the time, you
- 21:12Suze: know what your cost basis happens to be.
- 21:18Suze: However, this podcast really
- 21:21Suze: is all about,
- 21:24Suze: you knowing what you have, not looking at what you
- 21:27Suze: could have had or had.
- 21:30Suze: Deciding what you should do year-end tax strategies, understanding the
- 21:36Suze: free trade and when does it work for you and
- 21:38Suze: when does it not, understanding that you can take advantage
- 21:42Suze: of things when they go down, just never put everything
- 21:46Suze: you have into it because it goes down because it
- 21:48Suze: could go down further, so always leave some money there.
- 21:52Suze: To know your timelines, to know what type of investor
- 21:56Suze: you are.
- 21:57Suze: To really be in touch with yourself and your money,
- 22:01Suze: to know your cost bases, to make a plan, and
- 22:04Suze: to stick with it.
- 22:07Suze: That's what this podcast was all about. Now I know
- 22:12Suze: that I also said on Thursday that I would be
- 22:15Suze: going over all the new limits for retirement accounts, Social Security,
- 22:20Suze: all of that. I think I've given you enough right
- 22:23Suze: now that you don't need more numbers, so I will
- 22:27Suze: do that next time.
- 22:29Suze: I want you to go to youtube.com/ Suze Orman and
- 22:35Suze: I want you to subscribe. Can you do that for me?
- 22:39Suze: And last but not least, I wanna say one more thing.
- 22:43Suze: I have a feeling that interest rates on the one
- 22:46Suze: year certificate at Alliant Credit Union is going to change
- 22:51Suze: shortly and go down. I don't know what it's gonna
- 22:54Suze: go down to, but it's gonna go down.
- 22:57Suze: Therefore, if you're interested in a 4.10% APR or 4.15%
- 23:05Suze: APR for amounts of $75,000 or above, go to myalliant.com now,
- 23:12Suze: cause I'm telling you, things are gonna change, and by
- 23:16Suze: the way, you can do a minimum investment of $1,000
- 23:20Suze: to get that certificate. All right, until Thursday,
- 23:26Suze: when Miss Travis will be joining us again, and who
- 23:28Suze: knows what we're going to be doing on a Thanksgiving Day,
- 23:31Suze: there's only one thing that I want you to remember
- 23:33Suze: when it comes to your money, and it is this
- 23:36Suze: people first, then money, then things. Now you stay safe.
- 23:42Suze: Bye bye.
