• 1:42
Speaker 5: A little bit of a slow drive for some of
• 1:44
Speaker 5: us coming in this morning, there is construction eastbound on
• 1:47
Speaker 5: I sixty four. Not too terrible of a delay. I
• 1:50
Speaker 5: was talking to one of my coworkers who was I
• 1:53
Speaker 5: delayed about fifteen minutes or so coming in this morning,
• 1:55
Speaker 5: talking to one of my coworkers who just came in
• 1:57
Speaker 5: and said, it wasn't too bad there at all, but
• 1:59
Speaker 5: just so you know, you could have a little bit
• 2:01
Speaker 5: of delay because it is construction season now and Lord
• 2:04
Speaker 5: knows we need it here in West Virginia. Coming up
• 2:06
Speaker 5: a little bit later, on. Rick Havaner from Charleston Urban
• 2:09
Speaker 5: Works is going to be stopping by. You may have
• 2:11
Speaker 5: seen last week front page story in the Gazette mail
• 2:14
Speaker 5: about a new grocery store that's going in on the
• 2:16
Speaker 5: east end of Charleston, something that is definitely has been
• 2:19
Speaker 5: needed for some time. We'll talk to Rick about that,
• 2:21
Speaker 5: plus some other big things. We're just a couple of
• 2:23
Speaker 5: weeks away from Foam with the Dome, which is a
• 2:26
Speaker 5: big event that the Charleston Urban Works folks do, so
• 2:29
Speaker 5: we'll talk to Rick about that. Plus Rob Real from
• 2:31
Speaker 5: her sister station ninety six to one KWS will be
• 2:34
Speaker 5: stopping by. You know, we're always doing stuff. Rob loves
• 2:36
Speaker 5: to do stuff for the community and it's not even
• 2:39
Speaker 5: court ordered. That's the cool thing about it. He just
• 2:41
Speaker 5: does it out of the goodness of his heart. And
• 2:43
Speaker 5: this is one of those events that we call up
• 2:45
Speaker 5: on our listeners to help us outs. As you may
• 2:49
Speaker 5: very well know, a lot of kids and school is
• 2:52
Speaker 5: out now out for kids in Kanawha County. I know
• 2:54
Speaker 5: it's out of Putnam County. I think later in the
• 2:55
Speaker 5: week a lot of kids when they go home for summer,
• 2:59
Speaker 5: they they don't have a lot of food and there
• 3:02
Speaker 5: are various organizations we talked to Doug Irwin from the
• 3:05
Speaker 5: Backpack Buddies program yesterday that try to help out in
• 3:08
Speaker 5: that situation. But there's always more help needed to make
• 3:10
Speaker 5: sure that kids have something to eat during the summer months.
• 3:13
Speaker 5: So we're doing a thing along with the folks at
• 3:16
Speaker 5: Union Mission on Thursday that we call drop your Snacks,
• 3:19
Speaker 5: And as we've done these things in the past, we
• 3:21
Speaker 5: clear off our parking lot at eleven eleven Virginia Street
• 3:24
Speaker 5: East and Charleston and we ask you, the greatest listeners
• 3:26
Speaker 5: in the world, starting at seven am going all the
• 3:29
Speaker 5: way to six pm on Thursday, just to drop off
• 3:31
Speaker 5: some non perishable food items. Now I've got a list
• 3:34
Speaker 5: of what we're looking for. If you can drop off
• 3:36
Speaker 5: a box of cereal or you can drop off a
• 3:38
Speaker 5: box of a box of cereal. Either, we'll be fine
• 3:42
Speaker 5: and we'll talk to Rob. This is kind of his baby,
• 3:44
Speaker 5: and all of our stations will be involved in it.
• 3:46
Speaker 5: But robal joined us coming up about that a little
• 3:48
Speaker 5: bit later on. Plus, your calls and texts are always welcome.

• 4:06
  Speaker 2: Dave?
• 4:07
Speaker 5: Why are you welcome to our new home. Man, this
• 4:09
Speaker 5: is a nice very professional I noticed you were limping
• 4:13
Speaker 5: a little bit going down the steps. You're telling me
• 4:14
Speaker 5: you've got some knee issues. All those years of being
• 4:16
Speaker 5: a stellar athlete, Man, it caught up with It does
• 4:21
Speaker 5: catch up with you when you get a little bit
• 4:22
Speaker 5: of age on us.
• 4:24
Speaker 6: Think twice playing hoops down Highland Elementary on Canal Terrace,
• 4:28
Speaker 6: on that concrete court, that it has caught up.
• 4:31
Speaker 5: But today you're thinking, well, maybe I should have maybe
• 4:35
Speaker 5: not played as much or something past the court that day. Yes,
• 4:39
Speaker 5: just for one day, we got some things in the community.
• 4:42
Speaker 5: Because I know you're very involved with your foundation. We're
• 4:44
Speaker 5: going to get to that a little bit later on,
• 4:45
Speaker 5: but I want to first talk about the session. It
• 4:49
Speaker 5: just end, of course, there's a little later ending to
• 4:51
Speaker 5: the session because it was a gubernatorial year, and so
• 4:56
Speaker 5: let's talk about session overall you your thoughts on the
• 4:59
  Speaker 5: session overall well.
• 5:01
Speaker 6: On the House of Delegates. First of all, Dave, thanks
• 5:03
Speaker 6: for the opportunity to talk to you today. As you know,
• 5:08
Speaker 6: not here as much as talk about the politics of
• 5:10
  Speaker 6: the leg.
• 5:12
Speaker 5: But I would be remiss if I didn't.
• 5:14
Speaker 6: As overall, well, you know, I'm a people person, so
• 5:17
Speaker 6: I'm here talk about people and community. And with that said,
• 5:21
Speaker 6: on the House of Delegate side, we had a new
• 5:23
Speaker 6: format that was implemented with standing committees and subcommittees. For
• 5:30
Speaker 6: me personally, I was very happy with the results of
• 5:33
Speaker 6: those committees and the product that was presented before us.
• 5:37
Speaker 6: On the House side, you know, it transfers over to
• 5:40
Speaker 6: the Senate. At the end of the day, we had
• 5:43
Speaker 6: two hundred and forty nine bills past legislation, with one
• 5:47
Speaker 6: hundred and fifty two of those on the House, and
• 5:51
Speaker 6: twenty three hundred bills were presented to the West Virginia
• 5:55
Speaker 6: legislation in twenty I don't think.
• 5:57
Speaker 5: That people realize and you probably didn't you got there either,
• 6:01
Speaker 5: how many bills are actually out there.
• 6:05
Speaker 6: It's you would think that kind of holds us back
• 6:09
Speaker 6: from producing quality. I'm more of a delegate that presents
• 6:16
Speaker 6: three or four bill opportunities as I hear from my
• 6:19
Speaker 6: constituents and then I look to pass two or three
• 6:24
Speaker 6: bills during my session, and I was proud to get
• 6:26
Speaker 6: across the finish line the Dementia Services Director position for
• 6:30
Speaker 6: the State of West Virginia. That bill did pass both bodies,
• 6:35
Speaker 6: It went to the Governor's office and it will go
• 6:37
Speaker 6: into effect into law. What exactly it's a Dementia Services
• 6:42
Speaker 6: Director State of West Virginia. There's twenty eight other states
• 6:45
Speaker 6: that has this position within their state government. The State
• 6:49
Speaker 6: of West Virginia did not. And starting July first, we
• 6:53
Speaker 6: will have a go to person and department to answer
• 6:59
Speaker 6: and address all constituent services for families living with dementia
• 7:05
Speaker 6: or other dementia illnesses.
• 7:07
Speaker 5: And this has been something that I know that has
• 7:11
Speaker 5: been very near and dear to your heart. As we'll
• 7:13
Speaker 5: charge to transition away from politics. Is things having to
• 7:17
Speaker 5: do with dementia. It does.
• 7:19
Speaker 6: I am trained as a community educator for the Alzheimer's Association.
• 7:24
Speaker 6: For the past twelve years, co chaired Dementia Friendly Saint Albans.
• 7:31
Speaker 6: We are the only community in the state to be
• 7:33
Speaker 6: recognized as a dementia friendly community. And with that said,
• 7:38
Speaker 6: in the last two years ago we passed a bill
• 7:41
Speaker 6: to form a task force. We formulated nineteen volunteers from
• 7:46
Speaker 6: across the state to address the needs of families dealing
• 7:50
Speaker 6: with dementia. And the one recommendation was that the state
• 7:55
Speaker 6: of West Virginia, with the high numbers that we have,
• 7:58
Speaker 6: needed a department, needed an individual for families to go
• 8:02
Speaker 6: to with their questions. One recommendation, another law passed. So
• 8:08
Speaker 6: in two years I've been blessed to follow the Alzheimer's
• 8:12
Speaker 6: Association's lead and get two bills passed in dealing with
• 8:17
  Speaker 6: this illness.
• 8:19
Speaker 5: You heard any word about a special session?
• 8:22
  Speaker 6: I have, there's a lot of Yesterday actually, I was
• 8:25
Speaker 6: on the phone with several people. They had heard it
• 8:27
Speaker 6: was going to be in July. Now I hear it
• 8:30
Speaker 6: could be in September. So I love the Governor's approach
• 8:37
Speaker 6: that the issues before us and him for calling special session.
• 8:42
Speaker 6: I think relays or relates into pei A and some
• 8:46
Speaker 6: insurance issues. And we have interims in the end of
• 8:51
Speaker 6: June at the Stonewall Resort, and that will be a
• 8:54
Speaker 6: topic of discussion to see if we can come to
• 8:58
Speaker 6: a calming ground and solutions that would be beneficial to
• 9:03
Speaker 6: the all of our policy holders. So I think it's
• 9:08
Speaker 6: predicated on what comes out of our interims in June.
• 9:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, because you can't. The code says. We talked about
• 9:14
Speaker 5: this a little bit yesterday. Yeah, special sessions have to
• 9:16
Speaker 5: be held in the capital city. You can have interims
• 9:19
Speaker 5: as you frequently do around the state, but the actual
• 9:22
Speaker 5: special sessions have to be done in Charleston. So you
• 9:24
Speaker 5: couldn't do that. And when you're at your conference at Stonewall,
• 9:27
Speaker 5: that is correct, make your plans, which can't actually do
• 9:30
  Speaker 5: it there.
• 9:30
Speaker 6: It's sort of like a summer camp. You know, we're
• 9:34
Speaker 6: going to one way to put one way to put
• 9:36
Speaker 6: it in a positive way, right, But we're going to
• 9:39
Speaker 6: Stonewall to discuss the topic and then we can come
• 9:44
Speaker 6: back to the capital for the special session or next
• 9:47
Speaker 6: interims to see what directs we want to go talk.

• 10:04
Speaker 5: can hurt you. All right, let's put the politics aside
• 10:07
Speaker 5: and let's talk about some other things you're involved with.
• 10:09
Speaker 5: You're always involved in things going on in the community
• 10:11
Speaker 5: with Explain your foundation for people that don't know about it.
• 10:13
Speaker 6: Oh, yes, sure, thank you for the opportunity. The two
• 10:16
Speaker 6: five one seven seven Foundation is our city zip code
• 10:21
Speaker 6: in the city. It's a community based organization that primarily
• 10:25
Speaker 6: dedicated to the youth of Saint Aubans and the surrounding areas.
• 10:29
Speaker 6: It was established in two thousand and four. It employees
• 10:34
Speaker 6: the motto help us, help You. We provide funding to
• 10:38
Speaker 6: youth groups based on their community service effort. We organize
• 10:43
Speaker 6: the community service event. In the middle of April, we
• 10:47
Speaker 6: did a community citywide cleanup. I present ten dollars per person.
• 10:56
Speaker 6: Thirty people show up for your soccer team, you get
• 10:58
Speaker 6: three hundred dollars donation for three hours of community service.
• 11:02
Speaker 6: We had one hundred and seventeen participants with seven youth
• 11:05
Speaker 6: groups at our local church on a Corkle Avenue at
• 11:08
Speaker 6: Grace Baptist and served hot dogs and water and just
• 11:12
Speaker 6: had a wonderful day and still in pride in our
• 11:16
Speaker 6: youth and hopes that in the future they'll look at
• 11:20
Speaker 6: a cleaner community and put pride into what they're doing.
• 11:24
Speaker 5: So it was great. I mean, I know this is
• 11:26
Speaker 5: something that you've been very, very passionate about long before
• 11:29
Speaker 5: you ever got it, because you and I have known
• 11:30
Speaker 5: each other for a number of years, long before you
• 11:32
Speaker 5: ever got into politics. This is something that you have
• 11:36
Speaker 5: been a big part of you with your foundation and
• 11:38
Speaker 5: other things that you've done in the community.
• 11:40
Speaker 6: Well, I am the foundation. When my mother passed away,
• 11:45
Speaker 6: I wanted to create a foundation to honor her heart.
• 11:51
Speaker 6: My mother was a wonderful Christian woman who just led
• 11:54
Speaker 6: by example, and her grassroots program at the time was
• 12:00
Speaker 6: to volunteer at the ball field, the gymnasium, the church,
• 12:03
Speaker 6: the community, didn't matter. You're not giving a handout, but
• 12:08
Speaker 6: a hand up to help others. And so now I
• 12:11
Speaker 6: have a scholarship that I presented three weeks ago at
• 12:14
Speaker 6: Saint Auban's High School to honor my mother and my father.
• 12:18
Speaker 6: My father passed two years ago, and then I had
• 12:21
Speaker 6: one to present to a young lady to honor my
• 12:25
Speaker 6: sister who also passed, who was on that nineteen seventy
• 12:28
Speaker 6: five Saint Aubans State championship track team that was just
• 12:31
Speaker 6: recently honored at the state championship meet. And that's how
• 12:36
Speaker 6: the foundation kind of got off the ground. And now
• 12:41
Speaker 6: we've parlayed that into community service and our golf tournament.
• 12:47
Speaker 6: I'll get into how we raised the money. Is the
• 12:49
Speaker 6: August the ninth Saturday at Big Ben two person golf Scramble,
• 12:54
Speaker 6: twenty second year, will be celebrating this year.
• 12:56
Speaker 5: And we'll have you on as we get a little
• 12:58
Speaker 5: bit closer to talk talk about that. But give us
• 13:02
Speaker 5: give us the dates again just because that way, because
• 13:04
Speaker 5: I know how golfers are. The golf calendar is starting
• 13:08
Speaker 5: starting to fill up right now, so give us the
• 13:10
  Speaker 5: dates for that.
• 13:11
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's August the ninth, a Saturday, a Big Bend.
• 13:14
Speaker 6: It'll be our twenty second annual. We do sell out.
• 13:17
Speaker 6: We limit it to one hundred and twenty golfers. We
• 13:20
Speaker 6: have thirty volunteers on the course that day, a lot
• 13:24
Speaker 6: of folks just trying to make your day special. We
• 13:28
Speaker 6: felt the more we could touch a golfer, the better
• 13:32
Speaker 6: the experience would be. So at every part three we
• 13:35
Speaker 6: have volunteers, We have rifle opportunities and August the ninth
• 13:41
Speaker 6: is the golf outing and we'll have another community day
• 13:45
Speaker 6: hopefully community service city wide pick up in the middle
• 13:48
Speaker 6: of August. And then being the leadership chair for twenty
• 13:52
Speaker 6: twenty five for the Alzheimer's Association and the walks across
• 13:55
Speaker 6: our state, I'm promoting all the walks in the different
• 14:00
Speaker 6: areas and October will be the walk here in Charleston
• 14:04
Speaker 6: for the Alzheimer's Association as a quick transition.
• 14:07
Speaker 5: From Foundation Alzheimers. But I know we're limited, right, But
• 14:10
Speaker 5: you got a lot of stuff going on, man.
• 14:12
Speaker 6: Well, I actually tried to print the different activities going
• 14:15
Speaker 6: on from Dumbar to Nitro to Saint Albans. That is
• 14:18
Speaker 6: my district, that is District fifty eight. We talk about
• 14:22
Speaker 6: grassroots programs and as you know, I've been receiving some
• 14:27
Speaker 6: direct mailers in the Milt to my constituents, and you know,
• 14:31
Speaker 6: I live grassroots. I put my money where my mouth
• 14:35
Speaker 6: is and that's through a variety of events. And you
• 14:40
Speaker 6: know I'm involved with the Rotary Club, as you and
• 14:42
Speaker 6: I have been for the last twenty years, walk to
• 14:45
Speaker 6: end Alzheimer's, organizing community cleanups. We're doing a youth Safety
• 14:50
Speaker 6: Day in July down in the city of Saint Albans.
• 14:56
Speaker 6: Some news about our chief Gilbert as going to be
• 15:00
Speaker 6: retiring soon. So I had the opportunity to speak with
• 15:04
Speaker 6: Captain Bass yesterday and Mayor Goodwin in Charleston. That's a
• 15:09
Speaker 6: big event for kids. We're going to provide free helmets
• 15:13
Speaker 6: to our youth and bicycles if needed. That'll be at
• 15:17
Speaker 6: the Saint Aubans parking lot. Just another event that I
• 15:22
Speaker 6: not only participate in volunteer, but organize as well.
• 15:26
  Speaker 5: So we'll have.
• 15:29
Speaker 6: The bicycles and to do a training course and then
• 15:32
Speaker 6: we'll go through town trying to offer up free helmets
• 15:35
Speaker 6: where they're needed for safety purposes.
• 15:37
Speaker 5: You said something about a mailer. What is somebody?
• 15:41
Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a well funded This is all new to me, so.
• 15:45
  Speaker 5: Yeah, well funded.
• 15:48
Speaker 6: Pick that has sent mailers to my constituents that have
• 15:54
Speaker 6: about certain topics that I'm not going to address or
• 15:58
Speaker 6: give them any credit for. But if you want to
• 16:01
Speaker 6: talk about grassroots, let's talk about what we're doing. Okay,
• 16:03
Speaker 6: That's what I'm here to tell you about what I'm
• 16:05
Speaker 6: doing and what I've been doing for twenty years. And uh,
• 16:09
Speaker 6: it's not about a shiny, glossy postcard. It's about putting
• 16:13
Speaker 6: your feet the pavement, it's about lifting others up, and
• 16:17
Speaker 6: it's about doing I'll leave it at that and this
• 16:24
Speaker 6: comment and appreciate the opportunity to serve my district. And
• 16:26
Speaker 6: I'll continue to do that for as long as they
• 16:29
Speaker 6: want me and appreciate my work.
• 16:31
Speaker 5: Don't good, wal Hall, give us the website or social
• 16:34

• 20:42
Speaker 5: We've got a lot of stuff to talk to you
• 20:43
Speaker 5: about as well. Big front page, glossy picture in the
• 20:47
Speaker 5: gazette mail last week about a new new grocery store
• 20:50
Speaker 5: come to the East End. Talk about it.
• 20:52
Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, as as you and I've discussed for
• 20:56
Speaker 8: i'd say the last decade now, grocery store on the
• 21:00
Speaker 8: East End has been a topic of conversation in one
• 21:02
Speaker 8: form or another. You know, the East End has been
• 21:05
Speaker 8: a technical food desert as far as FDA standards are concerned.
• 21:09
Speaker 8: And it's because there hasn't been a grocery store there
• 21:11
Speaker 8: since I believe two thousand and one, maybe two thousand
• 21:13
Speaker 8: and two, somewhere in there. And so the residents of
• 21:17
Speaker 8: that particular district, that neighborhood have have had to you know,
• 21:20
Speaker 8: find if they don't have transportation, find transportation to get
• 21:23
Speaker 8: to get access to goods, food and goods and you know,
• 21:27
Speaker 8: healthy food, or if they do have transportation, they have
• 21:31
Speaker 8: to drive elsewhere. So, you know, seeing the announcement about
• 21:35
Speaker 8: this and and you know, having a conversation with Ray,
• 21:38
Speaker 8: the owner who's going to be opening up this this
• 21:39
Speaker 8: bodega style grocery store. You know, it's it's exciting, it's promising.
• 21:45
Speaker 8: I think that we're going to see a good start
• 21:48
Speaker 8: to something. We're going to see the need fulfilled, and
• 21:51
Speaker 8: we're going to see the proof that there is a
• 21:53
  Speaker 8: huge need there.
• 21:53
Speaker 5: Now, explain exactly where it is. So if you recall
• 21:56
  Speaker 5: where Genos was.
• 21:59
Speaker 8: Right there was Tutor's Biscuit World right there at the
• 22:01
Speaker 8: corner of Ruffner Avenue in Washington Street East. Uh, it's
• 22:04
Speaker 8: that building where Gino's Pizza and Spaghetti was, and uh,
• 22:09
Speaker 8: it's food Town. It is the name, the name of
• 22:11
Speaker 8: the name of the business, and it's you know, it's
• 22:15
Speaker 8: going to have pretty much everything you need. You know,
• 22:19
Speaker 8: smaller store obviously, But what I've been saying whenever I've
• 22:22
Speaker 8: been talking about it is it's a great step in
• 22:24
  Speaker 8: the right direction. I think he's he's doing a really
• 22:26
Speaker 8: good job with a design inside, and I really believe
• 22:30
Speaker 8: that the services and the goods that will be offered there,
• 22:34
Speaker 8: mostly goods, will be a really really good first step there.
• 22:37
Speaker 5: Now, explain the concept of a bodega you see these
• 22:40
Speaker 5: in larger cities. New York comes to mind. But for
• 22:42
Speaker 5: those who may not know, explain, explain what a bodega
• 22:45
  Speaker 5: actually is.
• 22:45
Speaker 8: Well, you know, that's the term you use a lot
• 22:46
Speaker 8: when you go to bigger cities, typically in neighborhoods of
• 22:50
Speaker 8: larger metropolitan areas. You know, if you go to Brooklyn,
• 22:53
Speaker 8: New York, if you're in any you know, little neighborhood
• 22:55
Speaker 8: that it exists in any larger city. They're usually corner stores,
• 23:00
Speaker 8: if you will, and you know, they offer everything you need.
• 23:05
  Speaker 8: Usually there's like a small deli in there. I don't
• 23:07
Speaker 8: know if food Town is going to have that, right, yeah,
• 23:09
Speaker 8: you know, package goods, pretty much everything you need. And
• 23:14
Speaker 8: it's designed for people who because those those densely populated areas,
• 23:18
Speaker 8: there's a large population of people who live around it, indeed,
• 23:21
Speaker 8: quick access to things they can walk to. And this
• 23:24
Speaker 8: gentleman is from New York and so he's bringing that
• 23:27
Speaker 8: style here and I think it's perfect for the East
• 23:29
  Speaker 8: End neighborhood.
• 23:30
Speaker 5: I mean, and as you said, Rick, this is something
• 23:32
Speaker 5: that has been has been needed, you know, in that
• 23:35
Speaker 5: area for some time. And it's it's kind of interesting
• 23:37
Speaker 5: the way because you know when I when I was
• 23:39
Speaker 5: here an old guy story, but when I was a kid,
• 23:42
Speaker 5: there there were little stores like this around. Of course
• 23:45
Speaker 5: I grew up in a much more rural area, but
• 23:47
Speaker 5: there were little stores like this, and then a lot
• 23:49
Speaker 5: of them just couldn't compete with the larger stores, you know,
• 23:52
Speaker 5: the Kroger and certainly a wal Mart or something like that,
• 23:54
Speaker 5: and so what they were kind of replaced with in
• 23:57
Speaker 5: some of these areas was carry out type stores, which
• 23:59
Speaker 5: which well, it's okay for certain things, but as you said,
• 24:02
Speaker 5: when it comes to as you and the FDA put
• 24:05
Speaker 5: Drug Administration is a big part of that because being
• 24:09
Speaker 5: FDA certified, meaning it's more of a grocery store, not
• 24:12
Speaker 5: just a place to stop buy and get cigarettes, pop
• 24:15
Speaker 5: and beer. You know, there's a lot more to it.
• 24:17
Speaker 8: Well, you know, and if I can rewind back to
• 24:19
Speaker 8: twenty ten and you read the article, so you know,
• 24:22
Speaker 8: in twenty ten, we commissioned a huge grocery store feasibility study.
• 24:26
Speaker 8: We brought in, we hired professionals from out of the
• 24:29
Speaker 8: area to come in and analyze the entire district, not
• 24:32
Speaker 8: just the district, but the entire valley. We did front
• 24:35
Speaker 8: porch focus groups throughout the East End. I walked around
• 24:38
Speaker 8: with the consultants we hired and we interviewed people on
• 24:43
Speaker 8: their front porches as we saw them and asked them
• 24:45
Speaker 8: where do you go to get your to get your groceries?
• 24:47
Speaker 8: You know, you're we know you just don't need you know,
• 24:50
Speaker 8: chips and cheese, it's and whatnot. You need you need
• 24:53
Speaker 8: access to real healthy food. Where do you go? The
• 24:55
Speaker 8: answers were really interesting. There were folks, a lot of
• 24:57
Speaker 8: the folks we talked to did not have a car,
• 24:59
Speaker 8: and so they would they would walk to the Capital Market.
• 25:02
Speaker 8: They would walk in some cases to Dollar General. Dollar
• 25:05
Speaker 8: Dollar General had just opened and they had they had
• 25:06
Speaker 8: in that particular Dollar General on the East End, they
• 25:08
Speaker 8: had put so like a small little grocery section there,
• 25:10
Speaker 8: like a freezer section, but they still were you know,
• 25:14
Speaker 8: the Capital Market has a lot, they have pretty much
• 25:16
Speaker 8: everything you need, but sometimes those price points for folks
• 25:19
Speaker 8: in certain socioeconomic you know, uh areas may not be
• 25:24
Speaker 8: able to afford all of that. And so they were
• 25:26
Speaker 8: having to go two, three, four different places to get
• 25:28
Speaker 8: what they needed because they didn't have access to one
• 25:31
Speaker 8: place that had everything. And then there were some there
• 25:34
Speaker 8: were We've talked to a group of elderly ladies who
• 25:37
Speaker 8: they caravaned. They they'd gotten a they carpolled up to
• 25:40
Speaker 8: the astron Place Kroger once a week or to the
• 25:42
Speaker 8: Canal City Kroger once a week together because it was
• 25:44
Speaker 8: easier for them. These are all things that no one
• 25:46
Speaker 8: in the capital city should should have to have to do.
• 25:49
Speaker 8: But we all should have quick access to everything we
• 25:52
  Speaker 8: need on a daily basis. And it's it's pretty it's
• 25:56
Speaker 8: sad that the East End has been this food desert
• 25:58
Speaker 8: for so long. Through that feasibility study, we were able
• 26:01
Speaker 8: to make contact with potential grocers, showing them particular lots
• 26:07
Speaker 8: that could be interesting to them. But the model, the
• 26:10
Speaker 8: national model for locating a grocery store, and we're talking
• 26:13
Speaker 8: the larger ones, Kroger Aldi, you know, the big, the
• 26:17
Speaker 8: big ones. Their specs have changed so much, what they
• 26:21
Speaker 8: what they require to locate in any type of urban district.
• 26:26
Speaker 8: That just doesn't happen in states are size. I mean,
• 26:28
Speaker 8: you know, if you go to Chicago, you're going to
• 26:30
Speaker 8: find a Trader Joe's on one floor and an Audi
• 26:32
Speaker 8: on the floor above it. You know, and in downtown
• 26:35
Speaker 8: Chicago that works because the population is so much higher,
• 26:37
Speaker 8: and they can they can sustain that because the bottom
• 26:40
Speaker 8: line is margins are just really really tight in the
• 26:44
  Speaker 8: grocery industry.
• 26:45
  Speaker 5: It's a huge risk.
• 26:47
Speaker 8: And the gentleman who's opening foodtown here, I'm not only appreciative,
• 26:51
Speaker 8: I'm congratulating him on the risk. I think it won't
• 26:54
  Speaker 8: be I think he'll find it won't be a risk.
• 26:56
Speaker 8: I think it will be successful. I think he is
• 26:58
Speaker 8: going to offer the things that the folks in the
• 26:59
Speaker 8: east in need. And the hope is it's not just
• 27:01
Speaker 8: the folks that live there, but it becomes a destination
• 27:04
Speaker 8: for people who may work around the East End. You know,
• 27:06
Speaker 8: the East End is flanked by two of the largest
• 27:08
Speaker 8: employers in the in the state of West Virginia. You
• 27:11
Speaker 8: have the Capital on one end, you have CAMC General
• 27:14
Speaker 8: on the other end. We're talking huge buying power there.
• 27:17
Speaker 8: So how do you keep those people there before they
• 27:19
Speaker 8: hop on the interstate? How do you create a destination
• 27:22
Speaker 8: for them to stop somewhere before they go home where
• 27:24
  Speaker 8: they may live.
• 27:25
Speaker 5: You know, and there's so many of us that do that.
• 27:27
Speaker 5: On the way home, you know, you text back and
• 27:29
Speaker 5: forth with your spouse or your family or whatever and say, hey,
• 27:31
Speaker 5: can you stop and pick this up on the way home?
• 27:33
Speaker 5: Can you you know we're getting the grilling season. Can
• 27:35
Speaker 5: you can you stop and pick up a couple of
• 27:37
Speaker 5: stakes or burgers or hot dogs or something we're going
• 27:39
Speaker 5: to throw on the grill, because I know you don't
• 27:41
Speaker 5: care Rick to answer the tougher questions. Okay, I got that,
• 27:45
Speaker 5: because well, I mean your two jobs have kind of
• 27:47
Speaker 5: raged here for that. You know, that's this school board
• 27:50
  Speaker 5: which we're not We're gonna let you'all a hook on
• 27:51
Speaker 5: school bak stuff today. We're not talking summertime day and yet,
• 27:54
Speaker 5: so we're not talking about that that area. Though in
• 27:57
Speaker 5: the East End there have been, as you well know,
• 27:59
Speaker 5: this is what you do for a living, there have
• 28:00
Speaker 5: been some there have been some issues you know, with
• 28:03
Speaker 5: with crime and whatever. And we had a couple of
• 28:07
Speaker 5: texts whor people ask about how how concerning is that?
• 28:10
Speaker 5: And that they had one text that's mentioned that another
• 28:12
Speaker 5: store had gone out and I don't know if this
• 28:15
Speaker 5: is to be the case. This is what they said,
• 28:17
Speaker 5: specifically because of the of crime and theft and things
• 28:19
Speaker 5: of that nature. How concerned are you about that?
• 28:22
Speaker 8: I'll tell you I'll tell you this what we have realized,
• 28:26
Speaker 8: and I've been doing this work for seventeen years, and
• 28:28
Speaker 8: we've seen ups and downs on the East End. You know,
• 28:30
Speaker 8: there's downturns, there's upturns. And I tell you the upturns
• 28:33
Speaker 8: happened when small businesses are investing in not just their building,
• 28:38
Speaker 8: not just their business, but in their neighborhood. And typically
• 28:40
Speaker 8: that happens at the same time. You know, right across
• 28:43
Speaker 8: the street from from where this bodega is going in
• 28:46
Speaker 8: is a gas station that many folks did not feel
• 28:49
Speaker 8: comfortable whatever stopping at for several years, and it was acquired,
• 28:52
Speaker 8: and you know, it's definitely it's definitely been upgraded to
• 28:56
  Speaker 8: a certain degree.
• 28:57
Speaker 5: It's a little more inviting now. You know that that helped.
• 29:01
Speaker 8: But you also have a business catty corner across you
• 29:04
Speaker 8: of Leonardo Spaghetti that's been opened for over one hundred
• 29:07
Speaker 8: and ten years now. I believe that still was very
• 29:10
Speaker 8: successful because it's a destination business. People still go there.
• 29:13
Speaker 8: They feel comfortable enough to go there. What we've seen
• 29:16
Speaker 8: over time, while yes, there are problems that exist in
• 29:19
Speaker 8: every city, we know that, and certain areas may be
• 29:22
Speaker 8: worse than others we know that as well. What we've
• 29:24
Speaker 8: seen is that when investment occurs, those crime trends usually
• 29:30
Speaker 8: start to go on a downturn.
• 29:32
Speaker 5: That's usually what we see.
• 29:33
Speaker 8: We've seen that happen on the West Side, we saw
• 29:35
Speaker 8: that happen on the East End for a long time.
• 29:37
Speaker 8: And you know what do we see happen when certain
• 29:39
Speaker 8: businesses close things also they take a downturn again. So
• 29:43
  Speaker 8: it's I've always been a believer that it's the chicken
• 29:46
Speaker 8: before the egg. Whenever you see investment happen in a
• 29:49
Speaker 8: commercial district, you see the culture and the sort of shift,
• 29:53
Speaker 8: you see the dynamic shift. And I believe that particular
• 29:56
Speaker 8: corner is an extremely important corner. If you look at
• 29:59
Speaker 8: the over minual plan for the East End, there are
• 30:01
Speaker 8: certain corners that are outlined to be very important for development.
• 30:04
Speaker 8: The Elizabeth Street corner, which unfortunately we've seen some businesses
• 30:06
Speaker 8: closed there over the past few years, and the Roughner
• 30:08
Speaker 8: Avenue corner right there. Years ago, we opened up the
• 30:12
Speaker 8: East End Bizarre on that corner just to you know,
• 30:15
Speaker 8: make some investment and get some foot traffic down there.
• 30:17
Speaker 8: For the first few years it was really successful. Unfortunately
• 30:21
Speaker 8: we had to we had to close it down. But
• 30:23
Speaker 8: you know, I really do believe that that's usually the
• 30:28
Speaker 8: order in which things occur. You see investment happen with
• 30:30
Speaker 8: small businesses in a in a commercial district and urban
• 30:33
Speaker 8: commercial district, and you see things slowly start to change.
• 30:36
Speaker 8: So my hope is we have responsible business owners down there.
• 30:41
Speaker 8: We have wonderful places like health right that just did
• 30:43
Speaker 8: that enormous expansion just two lots over from from actually
• 30:47
Speaker 8: just a lot over from where this.
• 30:48
Speaker 5: New bodega is going.
• 30:50
Speaker 8: You know, huge expansion, beautiful new renovation building and renovation
• 30:54
Speaker 8: to a building, and we and that's also been a
• 30:57
Speaker 8: help for the East End. So brick by brick is
• 30:59
Speaker 8: what we've always said, that's how change happens. And what
• 31:03
Speaker 8: we mean by that is when small business investment occurs,
• 31:06
Speaker 8: we see changes in the neighborhoods.
• 31:08
Speaker 5: Well, any kind of a timeline with this, can you
• 31:10
Speaker 5: give me an approximate? I mean, what are we looking
• 31:12
  Speaker 5: at here?
• 31:12
Speaker 8: I'm waiting to hear back from him. We talked briefly
• 31:14
Speaker 8: last week and we're supposed to meet some time this week.
• 31:17
Speaker 5: He was out of town.
• 31:17
Speaker 8: I think he's coming back maybe at the end of
• 31:19
Speaker 8: this week, so I'll know more. I know we're still
• 31:21
Speaker 8: a few weeks out, maybe maybe a month or two
• 31:24
Speaker 8: out from it from officially opening. But you know, if
• 31:26
Speaker 8: you've seen, if you've walked by and you've seen the storefront,
• 31:29
Speaker 8: I mean he's already made some really good investment in
• 31:30
Speaker 8: the storefront, really nice attractive signage, he's cleaned up the facade,
• 31:35
Speaker 8: and I've already let him know. We have grant money
• 31:37
Speaker 8: available for this type of thing that we offer any
• 31:39
Speaker 8: of our property business owners in our districts. So we're
• 31:43
Speaker 8: willing and waiting and willing to offer a helping hand
• 31:46
Speaker 8: however they may need.
• 31:47
Speaker 5: We got a lot of big events and we'll be
• 31:49
Speaker 5: talking more about this. I think I got your scheduled
• 31:51
Speaker 5: to come out of like a week or so to
• 31:53
Speaker 5: talk about or maybe two weeks to talk about foam
• 31:55
Speaker 5: with the dome, and that's a big thing you guys
• 31:57
Speaker 5: are doing well. Our stations will be a big part
• 31:59
Speaker 5: of that, as we always our house. The planning going
• 32:01
  Speaker 5: for that.
• 32:01
Speaker 8: Really really well. We're pretty much ready. I mean we're
• 32:03
Speaker 8: now just pushing out the advertising marketing. You know, of course,
• 32:06
Speaker 8: you guys will be doing the ticket giveaways here in
• 32:08
Speaker 8: a couple of weeks. You know, this event in its
• 32:10
Speaker 8: ninth year. It has just become a staple for not
• 32:13
Speaker 8: just the city, but for the whole state. You know,
• 32:15
Speaker 8: we've seen people from sixteen different states attend this event
• 32:18
Speaker 8: over the course of the past nine years. It's one
• 32:21
Speaker 8: of the largest craft beer music festivals in the state
• 32:23
Speaker 8: now and it draws people into not just the district,
• 32:27
Speaker 8: but the entire city, and so we're capitalizing on that.
• 32:30
Speaker 8: This year. We're adding a component to that called Foam
• 32:32
Speaker 8: after the Dome, and we've already gotten the advertising out
• 32:35
Speaker 8: in the businesses about that. We're wanting people to stick around.
• 32:38
Speaker 8: The event's over at seven o'clock. You could have really
• 32:40
Speaker 8: good time from three to seven o'clock. But we have
• 32:42
Speaker 8: fifteen different local businesses participating offering drinking, drink and food
• 32:46
Speaker 8: specials for our VIP ticket holders because we want folks
• 32:49
Speaker 8: to stay in Charleston wants thee event's over, because we
• 32:52
Speaker 8: have folks that are they're riding or they're preserving hotel rooms,
• 32:55
Speaker 8: they're coming from out of town. We have folks that
• 32:57
Speaker 8: are local here that may live Accounty over, may live
• 33:00
Speaker 8: you know, twenty minutes away, but we want them to
• 33:02
Speaker 8: keep their money here and keep their feet on the
• 33:04
Speaker 8: street here after our events.
• 33:06
Speaker 5: Over our tickets available.
• 33:08
Speaker 8: Hoom CWV dot com to get you.
• 33:10
Speaker 5: Tickets ahead of time, and the VIP tickets arerun there

• 33:14
Speaker 5: for general. All right, Rick, I appreciate it, man. So
• 33:16
Speaker 5: it's pleasure to have you here, and we'll have you on,
• 33:18
Speaker 5: as we said, as we get closer to foaming the
• 33:19
Speaker 5: dome here in a couple of weeks, and all of
• 33:20
Speaker 5: our stations will be over there broadcasting live and hanging
• 33:23
Speaker 5: out on the stage as long as you you know,
• 33:25
Speaker 5: you feed us, which you know you'll. You'll have me
• 33:28
Speaker 5: and Rob Real and Woody Woods and Steve Annibal, we'll

Speaker 5: get back at Kroger? I remember when Big Star was

Speaker 5: still around there too. Well, Again, as as Rick Cavener explained,
• 36:54
Speaker 5: I mean what goes into where a store locates. We
• 36:58
Speaker 5: could spend hour, three or four hours talking about that
• 37:01
Speaker 5: and there's just not the market Therefore, it just not

Speaker 5: bargains dot com et on over the website. You're going
• 37:58
Speaker 5: to save yourself a whole bunch of money from different
• 38:00
Speaker 5: stuff going on there. That just launched that yesterday and
• 38:03
Speaker 5: there's a lot of lot of lot of cool stuff
• 38:06
Speaker 5: of it. You'll hear a familiar voice. I think when
• 38:08
Speaker 5: the website launches. Okay, I think that, I think I'm
• 38:12
Speaker 5: on that. Okay, I lose track. I'll be honest. All right.
• 38:15
Speaker 5: Rob is here because Rob gets an idea. And what
• 38:18
Speaker 5: happens is is Rob says, you know, I've got this idea,
• 38:21
Speaker 5: and suddenly all of us in the building are saying, Okay,
• 38:24
Speaker 5: what does this mean for us? Yes, and it's all
• 38:26
Speaker 5: good because we love giving back to the community, you know.
• 38:29
Speaker 5: And so we're doing this thing on Thursday on our
• 38:31
Speaker 5: parking lot eleven eleven Virginia Street, Decent, Charleston, seven am
• 38:35
Speaker 5: till six pm. And you know the routine, you know.
• 38:38
Speaker 5: Right now, we move all the vehicles off the lot,
• 38:41
Speaker 5: we let people, We ask people, our listeners, greatest listeners
• 38:44
Speaker 5: in the world, to come in and donate what this time.
• 38:48
Speaker 7: It is non perishable snacks for kids because school's out
• 38:53
Speaker 7: for summer, as Alice Cooper saying, and one in five
• 38:56
Speaker 7: West Virginia kids faces some level of food insecure. Two
• 39:00
Speaker 7: thirds of West Virginia school kids are eligible for free
• 39:04
Speaker 7: or reduced lunch. Seventy thousand West Virginia school kids are
• 39:10
Speaker 7: in this situation, and there are some who only eat
• 39:15
Speaker 7: when school is open and breakfast and lunch are served there.
• 39:19
Speaker 7: So we're trying to serve our neediest weeest friends and
• 39:23
Speaker 7: neighbors with the help of Union Mission gathering up non
• 39:27
Speaker 7: perishable snacks and Union Missions doing the heavy lifting. Let's
• 39:30
Speaker 7: be honest, they're doing the collecting and the sorting and
• 39:32
Speaker 7: the distributing. Cash and check donations work great as well,
• 39:36
Speaker 7: but at the end of the day on Thursday between
• 39:39
Speaker 7: when we're done at six o'clock Thursday evening, we want
• 39:41
Speaker 7: to have a truckload of non perishable snacks to keep
• 39:44
Speaker 7: kids in need fed this summer.
• 39:46
Speaker 5: I had the whole thing, and let me tell you
• 39:48
Speaker 5: some of the things that we're looking for. They're not
• 39:50
Speaker 5: limited to these things, but here's some of the things
• 39:52
Speaker 5: we're looking for. Things like box cereals, cups of noodles,
• 39:56
Speaker 5: mac and cheese, pop tarts, juice cups, gator Ray, oatmeal, chips,
• 40:02
Speaker 5: cereal bars, package cheese and crackers, cookies, goldfish, crackers, soups, jellos, pudding,
• 40:08
Speaker 5: fruit cups, that's kind of that's kind of what we're
• 40:10
  Speaker 5: talking about here.
• 40:10
Speaker 7: The recovering missus Reel as I've taken to calling her
• 40:14
Speaker 7: and my ex wife is a junior high math teacher,
• 40:18
Speaker 7: and she says that goldfish crackers in particular, any of
• 40:22
Speaker 7: the flavors, are incredibly hard for her to keep in
• 40:26
Speaker 7: stock in her little She's got a little store she
• 40:29
Speaker 7: runs in her room, you know, extra credit points and
• 40:32
Speaker 7: that sort of thing, So she can't keep enough goldfish.
• 40:34
Speaker 7: So if you go into vapor locker, well, what can
• 40:37
Speaker 7: I get as many goldfish crackers as you can do that?
• 40:41
Speaker 7: And we don't care if you donate, Like if you
• 40:43
Speaker 7: go to your local whatever the store is and you
• 40:47
Speaker 7: buy a box, you go to your local sam store
• 40:49
Speaker 7: and you get a box of boxes, so to speak.
• 40:53
Speaker 7: Or we don't care if you run to end of
• 40:54
Speaker 7: your local convenience store and come back with a simple
• 40:58
  Speaker 7: pop tart.
• 40:59
Speaker 5: You know what, we don't care. Everything is the right size.
• 41:02
Speaker 7: Everyone can find a way within their means, within their
• 41:06
Speaker 7: budget to be a part of this. I mentioned cash
• 41:08
Speaker 7: and check donations are available. Maybe you can't run to
• 41:10
Speaker 7: the store, but you can run to the ATM, or
• 41:12
Speaker 7: you can just rip off a check for Union mission
• 41:15
Speaker 7: that will all work. I am always impressed but never
• 41:20
Speaker 7: surprised at the way West Virginians come through for West Virginians.
• 41:24
Speaker 7: I mean, and this is a guy who just got
• 41:26
Speaker 7: this bright idea last year to walk to Morgantown to
• 41:30
Speaker 7: walk a check up because you know, the mail service
• 41:32
  Speaker 7: doesn't work anymore.
• 41:33
Speaker 5: He thought, I'll just walk the check up there. But
• 41:36
Speaker 5: people and big shout out to Panhandle cleaning the restoration
• 41:39
Speaker 5: for helping out with that. People came through all along
• 41:42
Speaker 5: the way and you presented a big old check to
• 41:44
Speaker 5: And it's not about the reason I'm bringing that up
• 41:46
Speaker 5: is is because that meant that our listeners care about
• 41:51
Speaker 5: West Virginia. And if I've.
• 41:54
Speaker 7: Learned two things, it's that people want to help, but
• 41:58
Speaker 7: that people need They need a mcguffin, they need an
• 42:02
Speaker 7: easy way to do it. And so we created this
• 42:05
Speaker 7: for want of a better way to describe it, this
• 42:07
Speaker 7: Drop brand that we have now started with our first
• 42:11
Speaker 7: turkey drop that we do with Thanksgiving, frozen turkeys to
• 42:13
Speaker 7: feed families during the holidays. And then our Drop your
• 42:17
Speaker 7: Socks drive through socks, the most requested item at shelters
• 42:20
Speaker 7: and Service providers, so keep folks warm in the winter.
• 42:23
Speaker 7: Now we've added another one here in the summer to
• 42:25
Speaker 7: keep kids fed. You just loop through our parking lot.
• 42:28
Speaker 7: It's very simple. You don't have to get out of
• 42:30
Speaker 7: your nice comfortable vehicle. You just hand whatever through the
• 42:33
Speaker 7: window or pop the hatch and we'll grab it for you.
• 42:35
Speaker 7: Seven in the morning till six in the evening. So
• 42:37
Speaker 7: the time, even on a Thursday, even the day of
• 42:40
Speaker 7: the week is the same for these drop events. So
• 42:44
Speaker 7: we're doing our part to make this as easy as
• 42:47
Speaker 7: we can to help our friends and neighbors.
• 42:48
Speaker 5: That's what we're doing. Seven ambl six pm. And I
• 42:50
Speaker 5: get big shout out to Adjason and the Folks Union
• 42:53
Speaker 5: Mission as well, because they're kind of helping us because
• 42:55
Speaker 5: we collect it and eventually we'll eat it, so he's
• 42:59
Speaker 5: got to take it. He's not wrong, so he's gonna
• 43:02
Speaker 5: take this stuff. And again I gave you the lit
• 43:04
Speaker 5: that's just an idea. As long as it's a nonperishable
• 43:06
Speaker 5: food item, will take it. And it doesn't matter whether
• 43:09
Speaker 5: you can bring us a case of Gatorade bottles or
• 43:11
Speaker 5: you can bring one bottle.
• 43:13
Speaker 7: We don't we don't care if you went through the
• 43:15
Speaker 7: store and they had a like a two dollars two
• 43:17
Speaker 7: for four dollars situation, And you want to drink one
• 43:20
Speaker 7: of them and give us the other one, we will
• 43:22
Speaker 7: take it. Yeah, we are not saying no when it
• 43:25
Speaker 7: comes to helping our friends and neighbors.
• 43:26
Speaker 5: All right, Rob, seven am till six pm on our
• 43:29
Speaker 5: parking on here to eleven eleven Virginia Street East in Charleston,
• 43:32
Speaker 5: and it will be happening tomorrow, well Thursday, I mean,
• 43:34
Speaker 5: I'm sorry Thursday. I was thinking. I was already thinking
• 43:36
Speaker 5: about tomorrow's show. Do I do? The whole day of
• 43:39
Speaker 5: the week is a lot. It's it's on Thursday, and
• 43:42
Speaker 5: I was looking ahead at the weather. The weather looks good.
• 43:44
Speaker 5: I mean, be couse, you're not going to be get
• 43:45
Speaker 5: out in your car anyway.
• 43:46
Speaker 7: So fitting to be hot, so you can stay in
• 43:48
Speaker 7: your air conditioned vehicle.
• 43:50
Speaker 5: And that means that Steve Annibal will be in a
• 43:52
Speaker 5: speedo again. Yeah. Again, It's just another day in Paradise.
• 43:56
Speaker 5: I still be wearing that month, all right, Rob. Real
• 43:58
Speaker 5: from our sisters station ninety one KWS, your country music station.
• 44:06
Speaker 5: Yeah of the year. Yeah, they gave us a lot
• 44:08
Speaker 5: of shards of glass. Yeah, it was very I don't
• 44:10
Speaker 5: know if I've had a chance to congratulate you on
• 44:11
Speaker 5: the air about that, but yeah. Ninety six one KWS
• 44:14
Speaker 5: was named by the West Virginia Broadcast Association as the
• 44:16
Speaker 5: Country music station of the Year. Yes, in West Virginia.
• 44:19
Speaker 7: Yes, and maybe more important, my favorite one of those
• 44:21

Speaker 5: I have seen a trend on social media of companies

Speaker 5: creating rooftop gardening and placing greenhouses on the roofs cared

Speaker 5: The chief deputy from the Raleigh County sheriff Department, David Allard,
• 49:22
Speaker 5: talked to Chris about it as part of the story.
• 49:24
Speaker 5: At this point, they really don't know what happened, and
• 49:26
Speaker 5: by the time police arrived, the crowd had dispersed. And
• 49:29
Speaker 5: as usual, it's the parents fighting and not the kids.
• 49:33
Speaker 5: Imagine that yet another example of grown adults ruining events
• 49:37
Speaker 5: for kids. And you know, we see it constantly. It's
• 49:40
Speaker 5: sporting events from little league to high schools, and it's stupid.
• 49:44
Speaker 5: It's just plain stupid. It's parents and grandparents who think
• 49:48
Speaker 5: it's all about them and not about the kids. I
• 49:50
Speaker 5: got a radical idea, TJ. Meadows, all right, I got
• 49:55
Speaker 5: a radical idea. Here, are you ready? I'm ready to
• 49:57
Speaker 5: go for it. We may have to. This trend continues
• 50:02
Speaker 5: of parents and grandparents, not kids, parents and grandparents misbehaving
• 50:06
Speaker 5: at public events. Now it's graduations, and now it's in
• 50:09
Speaker 5: West Virginia, it's little leagues, high schools. Whatever, mom and
• 50:13
Speaker 5: dad can't behave and mom and dad and grandparents need
• 50:16
Speaker 5: to stay away. We banned the parents, and we just
• 50:19
Speaker 5: let the kids play, and we just let the kids graduate.
• 50:21
Speaker 5: Everything streamed anyway. If it continues like it is now,
• 50:24
Speaker 5: that's what's going to happen. And I'm one hundred percent
• 50:26
Speaker 5: for it. If it continues like it is now, every parent,
• 50:30
Speaker 5: well we've tried just prosecuting a one or two and
• 50:33
Speaker 5: that didn't work. I don't know, man, you know how
• 50:36
Speaker 5: much I love you. But if it continues the way
• 50:39
  Speaker 5: it's going now.
• 50:41
Speaker 15: Then up the penalty, make them, make them stay a
• 50:43
Speaker 15: few nights in jail, make it tangible.
• 50:47
Speaker 5: But you would agree with me, though, this is not
• 50:50
Speaker 5: It's not the kids. It's nine times out of ten,
• 50:52
Speaker 5: it's parents that have failed athletic. And I was no athlete,
• 50:56
Speaker 5: don't get me wrong. You take one look at me
• 50:58
Speaker 5: and see that. But that have failed athletic dreams themselves,
• 51:02
Speaker 5: that don't know how to behave in public, and you're
• 51:04
Speaker 5: not going to disrespect my baby, Well, you're disrespecting your
• 51:07
Speaker 5: baby now more than what everybody anybody would have.
• 51:09
Speaker 15: I have had to learn that. My penchant for competition
• 51:13
Speaker 15: and I love to compete. I'll compete with anybody on anything.
• 51:16
  Speaker 15: I just that's the way I'm wired. I have to
• 51:20
Speaker 15: be very deliberate about not putting that on my children
• 51:23
Speaker 15: because they may not be as competitive about a certain thing,
• 51:26
Speaker 15: they may not care about it, and I, as their father,
• 51:28
Speaker 15: need to be okay with that and just love them
• 51:30
Speaker 15: for who they are and what they want to do.
• 51:32
Speaker 5: A lot of parents think their kid is going to
• 51:34
  Speaker 5: the league.
• 51:35
Speaker 16: It's not happening, and your kid's not special and special
• 51:38
Speaker 16: you've got to teach that mean your your kid is
