- 0:21Speaker 1: You are listening to Eagles postgame analysis here at the
- 0:23Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly
- 0:26Speaker 1: sports podcast show in the world. That's right over eleven
- 0:28Speaker 1: and a half years strong. And we've got the Eagles
- 0:32Speaker 1: wild card game here in the books. They beat the
- 0:35Speaker 1: Green Bay Packers down at the Link by a score
- 0:38Speaker 1: of twenty two to ten. My goodness, this was a
- 0:41Speaker 1: game that I think it was going to turn out
- 0:45Speaker 1: the way it did. I'm not sure if Eagles fans
- 0:46Speaker 1: thought it was going to turn out this way, but look,
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles are heading to the divisional round of
- 0:52Speaker 1: the playoffs. Not sure as we are recording this who
- 0:55Speaker 1: they will be playing, but we're certainly going to get
- 0:56Speaker 1: into that. Regard to our content coming up this week,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I am Jeff Warren and I'm hearing my good buddy
- 1:02Speaker 1: from Philadelphia soccernow dot com helps us out with some
- 1:05Speaker 1: Eagles analysis and postgame analysis throughout this season. We've got
- 1:10Speaker 1: our buddy, Josh Schuster.
- 1:11Speaker 2: How you doing, Josh good Man? Get that bus ready
- 1:14Speaker 2: to New Orleans A ready?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Are you ready for it? I gotta tell you, I
- 1:20Speaker 1: was a little nervous from time to time during this game.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Like I said, initially, I didn't think this game was
- 1:27Speaker 1: gonna turn out the way that it did. Let's start
- 1:28Speaker 1: off by like how the game started. You have the
- 1:32Speaker 1: Packers receiving the ball the opening kickoff, and you've got
- 1:36Speaker 1: Oran Burks causing a fumble on that opening kickoff of
- 1:39Speaker 1: the game. Jeremiah Trotter Junior recovers the fumble. Eagles got
- 1:42Speaker 1: the ball in the Packers twenty eight yard line, a
- 1:44Speaker 1: couple of Saquon Barkley rushes that ended up leading to
- 1:48Speaker 1: a Jalen Hurtz touchdown pass to John Dotson, Dotson's first
- 1:53Speaker 1: touchdown reception this season. So have to mention something here though,
- 1:57Speaker 1: right off the back, because it's gonna be a theme.
- 1:59Speaker 1: It's gonna be a theme for sure. Have to mention
- 2:01Speaker 1: with regard to that touchdown pass. Jalen Hurts had all
- 2:04Speaker 1: the time in the world to throw. It was an
- 2:07Speaker 1: incredible pocket that the offensive line created for him on
- 2:11Speaker 1: that touchdown pass to Jahan Dotson. The offensive line for me,
- 2:17Speaker 1: is definitely a theme in this game. We can get
- 2:19Speaker 1: to that perhaps in a little bit here, But moving
- 2:23Speaker 1: away from the offensive side of things, Josh, the Eagles
- 2:27Speaker 1: defense stole the show. They stole the show in this game.
- 2:30Speaker 1: They allowed the Packers only ten points in this game.
- 2:34Speaker 1: They had two interceptions. They only allowed seventy yards passing
- 2:38Speaker 1: and forty six yards rushing in the first half of
- 2:41Speaker 1: the game. Oh, by the way, also two interceptions as well.
- 2:45Speaker 1: With only about five minutes and forty six seconds left
- 2:47Speaker 1: in the third quarter, the Packers had a thirteen play
- 2:51Speaker 1: drive within the game. They also had another twelve play
- 2:54Speaker 1: drive at that point in the game. The Packers only
- 2:58Speaker 1: had three points to show for both the those pretty
- 3:00Speaker 1: nice drives says a lot about the Eagles defense. The
- 3:03Speaker 1: Philadelphi Eagles defense stole the show here in this wild
- 3:07Speaker 1: card round.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think maybe I misunderstood they actually had three interceptions.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Oh did they have three?
- 3:14Speaker 2: Oh? They did three?
- 3:15Speaker 1: That's right.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I was forgot Mitchell first one.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yep, how do I how do we forget? How do
- 3:20Speaker 1: I forget Quinjon Mitchell getting his first I in t
- 3:23Speaker 1: congratulations to him, but thank you for correcting me on that, buddy.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know what has gotten into Nolan Smith
- 3:30Speaker 2: of late, to be honest, but I text my buddies
- 3:34Speaker 2: and I just said, this kid is really turning into
- 3:37Speaker 2: a player.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Uh.
- 3:38Speaker 2: He started off pretty strong to start the season and
- 3:41Speaker 2: then kind of tapered off a little, but he has
- 3:43Speaker 2: really ramped it up the last couple of weeks.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I believe he has eight and a half sacks over
- 3:48Speaker 1: the past thirteen games. That's pretty that's fantastic development right there.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yep. I was kind of in the opposite position.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I was not.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It didn't even feel like the playoffs to me today.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I was absolutely confident in this game. I really did
- 4:05Speaker 2: not think that it was going to be particularly close.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I wasn't going to be surprised at the Birds won
- 4:11Speaker 2: by ten plus. But the whole game they kept a
- 4:14Speaker 2: touchdown lead and would occasionally grow it to more than that.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And that's something I'll get into later when I do
- 4:24Speaker 2: my get off my lawn old man's speech about play
- 4:26Speaker 2: calling in the NFL. But that's a whole separate thing
- 4:31Speaker 2: we can get into later. But overall, I mean, was
- 4:35Speaker 2: it super pretty? No? Was it old school football where
- 4:40Speaker 2: it's not going to be high scoring and it's like
- 4:42Speaker 2: the first one to three touchdowns wins. Yeah, So it
- 4:47Speaker 2: was kind of nice to see that again. It was
- 4:51Speaker 2: kind of nice to be on the winning side of it,
- 4:54Speaker 2: and it was kind of nice to not really be
- 4:55Speaker 2: sweating through it the whole time.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I like that perspective, you know, old stuf football, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: just kind of you know, running the ball down the
- 5:03Speaker 1: other team's throat. Saquon Barkley had twenty five carries for
- 5:06Speaker 1: one hundred and nineteen yards average four point eight yards
- 5:09Speaker 1: per carry. Kenneth Gainwell, who I know, you love that,
- 5:12Speaker 1: only had three carries in the game for fourteen yards.
- 5:14Speaker 1: He averaged four point seven yards per carry. This Eagles
- 5:17Speaker 1: team and including Jalen Hurts, is thirty six total yards
- 5:20Speaker 1: on the day on six carries. This Eagles team averaged
- 5:23Speaker 1: five yards on the ground five yards rushing. There's something
- 5:28Speaker 1: to be said, like you, like you said, Josh, that
- 5:31Speaker 1: old school type of NFL smash mouth type of football,
- 5:35Speaker 1: we saw it. I mean, Jalen Hurts did not have
- 5:38Speaker 1: a good game, and we're gonna get into that in
- 5:39Speaker 1: a little bit here. I mean, he did not have
- 5:41Speaker 1: the greatest game in the world. I don't care what
- 5:44Speaker 1: the stat sheet says. Thirteen of twenty one, one hundred
- 5:47Speaker 1: and thirty one yards, six point two yards per attempt, yes,
- 5:50Speaker 1: two touchdowns, zero interceptions, which I'm gonna get to in
- 5:53Speaker 1: a little bit as well, in a rating of one
- 5:55Speaker 1: hundred and eleven point four. But I gotta tell you,
- 5:58Speaker 1: I did not like the way that Jalen Hurts played
- 6:00Speaker 1: in this game. Whether it was him coming back from
- 6:02Speaker 1: a concussion, whether it was him trying to get the
- 6:05Speaker 1: rust off, whatever the case was, I don't think he
- 6:07Speaker 1: had a great game. In my grade when we do
- 6:10Speaker 1: grades later on, is certainly going to reflect that. A
- 6:13Speaker 1: lot of poor decision making, holding again, holding onto the
- 6:16Speaker 1: ball for way too too long. I was just surprised,
- 6:22Speaker 1: And maybe we can get into your particular, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: get off my lawn sentiments coming out of this game.
- 6:28Speaker 1: But let's kind of get into the offense here, because
- 6:30Speaker 1: we saw a real lack of offensive execution for the Eagles,
- 6:34Speaker 1: especially in the passing game. I mean, both the Eagles
- 6:36Speaker 1: and the Packers. They were not able to get their
- 6:38Speaker 1: passing game going in the first half at all. A
- 6:41Speaker 1: lot of garbage time that Jordan Love. He ended up
- 6:44Speaker 1: getting some receptions and some yards through the air, but
- 6:49Speaker 1: the Eagles passing game just looks so out of sorts
- 6:51Speaker 1: from an overall perspective. Jalen Hurts only had thirty nine
- 6:54Speaker 1: yards at the half. He went sixty sorry, six of
- 6:57Speaker 1: thirteen with a touchdown. Actually started the game going six
- 7:01Speaker 1: of six and I'm thinking, wow, this is great. Then
- 7:04Speaker 1: went zero for seven after that until his next completed
- 7:07Speaker 1: pass in the third quarter. But here's the thing that
- 7:11Speaker 1: I wonder when the Eagles were preparing for this game,
- 7:14Speaker 1: is that, Josh, the Packers have allowed the third most
- 7:18Speaker 1: running back receptions and receiving yards this season among any
- 7:21Speaker 1: team in the NFL. I'm not sure why they weren't
- 7:25Speaker 1: throwing the ball to Saquon Barkley a little bit more.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I'm not sure why. And our good friend of the
- 7:30Speaker 1: show who's been on every now and again, Shane haff
- 7:32Speaker 1: He shut off a tweets saying that Jalen Hurts his
- 7:36Speaker 1: average time of throwing in the first half was three
- 7:39Speaker 1: point seventy nine seconds. That is a fantastic, fantastic stat
- 7:46Speaker 1: right there. I mentioned that incredible pocket that the offensive
- 7:49Speaker 1: line created for that Johan Dotson touchdown pass. We saw
- 7:53Speaker 1: the offensive line creating opportunities for Jalen Hurts to get
- 7:58Speaker 1: the ball down the field. When you have that much
- 8:00Speaker 1: time to pass the ball, you've got to get it
- 8:02Speaker 1: out quick. He wasn't getting it done, especially to start
- 8:04Speaker 1: the second half when he took that terrible sack. Hurts
- 8:08Speaker 1: didn't do I mean, he didn't do. I think what
- 8:11Speaker 1: we wanted him to do from a passing game standpoint,
- 8:14Speaker 1: Like you said, that smash mouth football is what we saw.
- 8:17Speaker 1: But I do want to mention that Jalen Hurts did
- 8:19Speaker 1: not turn the ball over at all, and there's something
- 8:21Speaker 1: to be said about that considering how he played in
- 8:24Speaker 1: this game, getting back on the field after a few weeks.
- 8:27Speaker 1: So just wanted to throw all of that out there.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I know you have some thoughts with regard to the offense.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Feel free to get into that theme, buddy.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I promise everybody Jeff and I do not text
- 8:37Speaker 2: each other ahead of time trying to figure out, oh,
- 8:40Speaker 2: what side we're going to take on different things. I'm
- 8:44Speaker 2: going to completely opposite camp, are you okay? And so
- 8:47Speaker 2: this may open up a fun discussion here. I've had
- 8:51Speaker 2: five concussions, okay, So I understand a lot about the
- 8:57Speaker 2: recovery process and decision making really is one of the
- 9:01Speaker 2: last things that come across that that really kind of
- 9:05Speaker 2: comes around for me as someone who has had five
- 9:09Speaker 2: concussions and only had to return to my job, which
- 9:13Speaker 2: does not require anywhere near the level of physical intensibility
- 9:20Speaker 2: and physical intensity or even quick processing that an NFL
- 9:25Speaker 2: quarterback has to do. I thought Hurts played a good game.
- 9:29Speaker 2: My biggest thing was if he came out he didn't
- 9:32Speaker 2: turn the ball over. I was going to be happy.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Why here's where I'm yeah, here's where I'm really unhappy.
- 9:39Speaker 2: You have a quarterback who has been out longer than
- 9:44Speaker 2: most quarterbacks coming back from a concussion, right, so obviously
- 9:48Speaker 2: something wasn't right. Why in the world are we passed
- 9:52Speaker 2: for past? First, I get trying to get him some
- 9:57Speaker 2: passes and all that. I mean, Saquon bark he averaged
- 10:01Speaker 2: I think you went over it. He averaged almost five
- 10:03Speaker 2: yards to carry even Kenny Gainwell. And let me be
- 10:06Speaker 2: very clear here, I don't hate Kenny Gainwell. I hate
- 10:10Speaker 2: how he's used. I hate that they get in the
- 10:13Speaker 2: red zone and all of a sudden, it's like Kenny
- 10:15Speaker 2: Gainwell time. It's so dumb. Sakewan Barkley. Use Barkley in
- 10:20Speaker 2: the red zone anyway, that's a whole separate get off
- 10:23Speaker 2: my lawn tangent. Anyway, back to the original one. I
- 10:28Speaker 2: just hate the fact that you have two running backs
- 10:31Speaker 2: today that averaged almost five yards of carry and you're
- 10:35Speaker 2: still putting as much as you put on hurts. It
- 10:38Speaker 2: just doesn't make sense. And I know people are kind
- 10:43Speaker 2: of chuckling about aj Brown reading a book on the sideline,
- 10:47Speaker 2: but to me, like, I guess it's better than exploding.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But as someone who has to be extremely professional in
- 10:55Speaker 2: their job and myself, I find that very disrespectful to
- 11:00Speaker 2: individuals who are working so hard to try to make
- 11:04Speaker 2: it to the NFL. And then here's this guy who's
- 11:06Speaker 2: getting paid as one of the highest wide receivers, highest
- 11:09Speaker 2: paid wide receivers in the NFL. He's sitting on the
- 11:11Speaker 2: sidelines reading a book.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That that is just terrible.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Look, I think it's Yeah, I think it's disrespectful to
- 11:17Speaker 2: the packers as well. It's the same thing like when
- 11:20Speaker 2: you're up by a bunch and you're still doing first
- 11:23Speaker 2: down motions, or you're down by like thirty points and
- 11:26Speaker 2: you make it catch and you put up the first
- 11:28Speaker 2: down thing like get over yourself. Yeah, So that's kind
- 11:32Speaker 2: of my old man rants of get off my lawn.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I just I hate the play calling nowadays. I don't
- 11:38Speaker 2: understand why this offense looked so good when they were
- 11:42Speaker 2: run first and build off of that. Yes, then they
- 11:45Speaker 2: decide that they're going to be a pass first team.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It just doesn't make sense they could get away with
- 11:52Speaker 2: it this week. I don't know you had mentioned we
- 11:54Speaker 2: don't know who they play yet. Whomever it is, they
- 11:57Speaker 2: will not get away with that next week.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Right And I your point actually does go to my
- 12:04Speaker 1: point with getting Saquon Barkley the ball in terms of
- 12:07Speaker 1: the passing game, the utilization of screens just not even
- 12:11Speaker 1: screens as well. If you can get a Texas route
- 12:14Speaker 1: going with Saquon Barkley, something quick for Jalen Hurts. I
- 12:18Speaker 1: understand what you were saying, having five concussions, the processing
- 12:21Speaker 1: speed not there, the decision making coming towards the end
- 12:25Speaker 1: of you know, healing up from that concussion. But I
- 12:29Speaker 1: think quicker passes to Saquon Barkley, especially in space where
- 12:32Speaker 1: he can make something happen, should have been part of
- 12:35Speaker 1: the game plan. It absolutely should have been part of
- 12:37Speaker 1: the game plan. I have no idea why it wasn't.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Why are you still throwing? Why is why is the
- 12:43Speaker 1: offensive game plan? Like you said, throwing to the perimeter
- 12:47Speaker 1: consistently when you know that it's gonna take Jalen Hurts
- 12:50Speaker 1: some time. The offensive line again is going to have
- 12:52Speaker 1: to provide him that protection. What we talked about in
- 12:55Speaker 1: the Opposition Territory podcast this past week. We knew that
- 12:58Speaker 1: the ball was gonna go to the perimeter as it
- 13:00Speaker 1: almost always does, hardly to the middle of the field,
- 13:03Speaker 1: which we know that that's what it is. But if
- 13:05Speaker 1: you're going to use that part of the field, the
- 13:10Speaker 1: perimeter of the field, let's use one of your greatest
- 13:13Speaker 1: weapons in Sakuon Barkley and get the ball out quick
- 13:16Speaker 1: to him. That's really where I was coming from with it.
- 13:18Speaker 1: They had to adapt. They didn't adapt the passing game
- 13:21Speaker 1: very well at all this week.
- 13:23Speaker 2: No, I agree, But Jeff, I think part of it
- 13:25Speaker 2: is we have spent weeks now watching two quarterbacks. Yeah
- 13:28Speaker 2: that get the ball out fast.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Hurts has.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Never been that way, right. I don't the biggest Hurts
- 13:34Speaker 2: fan in the world. You want to debate me on
- 13:36Speaker 2: a deep ball whatever. What you absolutely cannot debate me
- 13:41Speaker 2: on is Hurts does not get the ball out quick.
- 13:43Speaker 2: But it's not his game. He doesn't like to do it.
- 13:47Speaker 2: The way that the read option is most effective is
- 13:50Speaker 2: when you get the ball out quick, right because everybody's
- 13:53Speaker 2: already collapsed, they don't have time to then drop back
- 13:56Speaker 2: into coverage. Again.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yep.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Now Hurts doesn't like to do that, and so that's fine,
- 14:02Speaker 2: like that's his game, whatever. But when you spend multiple
- 14:06Speaker 2: weeks now watching quarterbacks whose strength is getting the ball
- 14:10Speaker 2: out quick, it really highlights that Hurts just is not
- 14:13Speaker 2: comfortable with that. So I'm not going to say that
- 14:15Speaker 2: they didn't call plays for that. I'm going to say
- 14:18Speaker 2: that Hurts made the decision not to utilize quick passes
- 14:21Speaker 2: because I have a hard time believing. I mean, if
- 14:23Speaker 2: you go back and watch film this year, you can
- 14:26Speaker 2: just see players wide open right at the beginning of
- 14:29Speaker 2: the route that Hurts doesn't throw too. So I'm going
- 14:31Speaker 2: to say that I don't know that the play calling
- 14:33Speaker 2: necessarily changed in terms of the types of routes I'm
- 14:37Speaker 2: going to say, I mean, you'd have to watch the
- 14:38Speaker 2: All twenty two. I'm going to say more of my
- 14:41Speaker 2: frustration with the play calling is that it was not
- 14:45Speaker 2: run first, even when you had a touchdown plus lead
- 14:48Speaker 2: the entire game, literally from your first possession. When you score,
- 14:52Speaker 2: you don't run the ball, and you had been a
- 14:55Speaker 2: run first team for a while.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you make great points. You really do great points.
- 15:00Speaker 1: And I'm not sure how much more we want to
- 15:02Speaker 1: get into the offensive side of things here. I think
- 15:04Speaker 1: I think we did a pretty good job analyzing that.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I did want to move over to the defense again
- 15:09Speaker 1: really quick, because I gotta tell you, I just had
- 15:12Speaker 1: that feeling at the end of the first quarter. We
- 15:14Speaker 1: all saw the what the score was. Packers had zero
- 15:20Speaker 1: points in the first quarter, only two completions by Jordan
- 15:23Speaker 1: Love for sixteen yards, five rushes by Josh Jacobs for
- 15:27Speaker 1: fourteen yards. And I'm thinking to myself, my gosh, this
- 15:31Speaker 1: is gonna be a defensive jugger, not by this Eagles defense.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And even though the stat sheet doesn't say it, two sacks.
- 15:38Speaker 1: The Eagles had on the day, four tackles for a loss,
- 15:41Speaker 1: four passes defended, They had five quarterback hits. The pressure
- 15:46Speaker 1: that they were putting on to Jordan Love there again.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I always use the phrase there's something to be said
- 15:53Speaker 1: about that, but really we're getting I feel like we're
- 15:57Speaker 1: entering this age where the Philadelphia Eagles are really one
- 16:00Speaker 1: of those teams, and look, you know, there have been
- 16:01Speaker 1: other teams that have had really great defenses over the years,
- 16:05Speaker 1: the forty nine Ers being one where you don't have
- 16:07Speaker 1: to have all the sacks in the world to get
- 16:10Speaker 1: pressure on opposing quarterbacks. When the opposing quarterback throws for
- 16:14Speaker 1: two hundred and twelve yards three interceptions, and then Josh Jacobs,
- 16:19Speaker 1: who is the guy who is who is basically your
- 16:21Speaker 1: only offensive threat when you have three wide receivers, your
- 16:25Speaker 1: top three wide receivers that are either injured or not
- 16:28Speaker 1: able to play in the game. Josh Jacobs eighteen carries
- 16:31Speaker 1: for eighty one yards is long? Was thirty one yards
- 16:36Speaker 1: on that huge thirty one yard or like this Eagles
- 16:40Speaker 1: defense played some lights out. Sure, they gave up some
- 16:44Speaker 1: chunk plays here and there, but man, lights out. And
- 16:47Speaker 1: if they continue to play like this here in the playoffs,
- 16:50Speaker 1: that's what matters. Teams with exceptional defenses like this team
- 16:56Speaker 1: can get passed round after round. Seen it. Baltimore Ravens
- 17:01Speaker 1: over the years have been able to do that. We've
- 17:04Speaker 1: seen a number of other teams throughout the league. Steelers,
- 17:08Speaker 1: of course, yes, even though they haven't won a playoff
- 17:10Speaker 1: game since in like eight years. Still we've seen it, though,
- 17:14Speaker 1: and I think this Eagles defense is going to end
- 17:18Speaker 1: up being the storyline of this season. If they are
- 17:22Speaker 1: able to make it to the NFC Championship, it will
- 17:24Speaker 1: be the Eagles defense being the storyline.
- 17:27Speaker 2: No, I totally agree, and I've said this before. There's
- 17:32Speaker 2: one word that doesn't show up on the stat cheap.
- 17:35Speaker 2: It's fundamentals. Yeah, Jeff, how many mistackles did you see today?
- 17:39Speaker 1: I got I gotta be. There was one play there
- 17:41Speaker 1: was four miss tackles. The other player with that large
- 17:44Speaker 1: that Josh Jacobs thirty one yarder, there was like six
- 17:46Speaker 1: miss tackles. But other than that, this team played fundamentals
- 17:49Speaker 1: very well.
- 17:51Speaker 2: But in the past, how often back to last year? Right,
- 17:54Speaker 2: the records aren't all that different, right, this year and
- 17:56Speaker 2: last year?
- 17:57Speaker 1: Right, they tackles, tons of mistackles last year.
- 18:00Speaker 2: There's going to be miss tackles in the NFL. Right,
- 18:02Speaker 2: you have elite players. And Josh Jacobs is a good
- 18:05Speaker 2: running back, Like, he's a really good running back, and
- 18:09Speaker 2: he had a pretty good day today if we're completely honest.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I mean, I'm thrilled they kept him to less than
- 18:14Speaker 2: a hundred yards. But he's still averaged about what Saquon did, right,
- 18:18Speaker 2: So give him his props. But to go into every
- 18:22Speaker 2: game expecting there to be zero missed tackles isn't fair, right,
- 18:25Speaker 2: But I'm if I can't sit there at the end
- 18:29Speaker 2: of the game and have a concern about the tackling.
- 18:33Speaker 2: It's a breath of fresh air. So yeah, there may
- 18:35Speaker 2: not be a ton of sacks. There may not be
- 18:39Speaker 2: a ton of pass deflected. There may not be, you know,
- 18:43Speaker 2: a ton of interceptions in this case, there was today.
- 18:47Speaker 2: What I care about is where more damage is done.
- 18:50Speaker 2: You just mentioned the thirty one yard run. If you
- 18:53Speaker 2: can't tackle, it doesn't matter how many sacks you have,
- 18:57Speaker 2: because when the players get the ball, they're going to
- 19:00Speaker 2: take it for a great distance.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:02Speaker 2: So, to me, the biggest reason why the Eagles have
- 19:08Speaker 2: the number one defense this year is because they've learned
- 19:10Speaker 2: how to tackle. I mean, it's just plain as simple
- 19:13Speaker 2: as that. I really think they went completely back to fundamentals.
- 19:17Speaker 2: I think Vic Fangeo said, this is what we're gonna do.
- 19:19Speaker 2: You see all these times where all these tackles are
- 19:22Speaker 2: missed because the same players are playing this year that
- 19:25Speaker 2: we saw in spots last year playing the same positions. Yep,
- 19:29Speaker 2: and they can't tackle to save their life. Yeah, so
- 19:31Speaker 2: that to me is the big difference. It doesn't show
- 19:33Speaker 2: up on the stat seat sheet. Sure it's not super
- 19:36Speaker 2: sexy like an interception or a sack, but you know what,
- 19:40Speaker 2: that's what wins football game.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, I think that's going to do it for
- 19:44Speaker 1: our themes here, do you have anything else? Buddy? Before
- 19:46Speaker 1: we had to break and then get to the grades.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Now, man, get that bus ready for New Orleans.
- 19:50Speaker 1: All right, sounds good. Let's take a break, folks, we'll
- 19:53Speaker 1: be back in just a bit. All right, we are
- 19:57Speaker 1: back and again we're with our friend Josh Shuster from
- 20:00Speaker 1: Philadelphia soccernow dot com. He loves helping us out with
- 20:03Speaker 1: some Eagles analysis every now and again on our postgame shows.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Let's get to grating by unit. The quarterback position. Jalen Hurts.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I went over his stats earlier. Go back if you
- 20:14Speaker 1: missed it. I'm gonna give Jalen Hurts this week a
- 20:17Speaker 1: straight up sea. I'm gonna give him a C even
- 20:20Speaker 1: though he didn't turn the ball over. Could be a
- 20:22Speaker 1: C plus. I'm right around that C C plus area
- 20:24Speaker 1: for Jalen Hurts. What do you give Hurts this week?
- 20:27Speaker 2: I'm giving him as Yeah, I don't think we spent
- 20:32Speaker 2: a while talking we did it hurt the team. And
- 20:36Speaker 2: I think for just coming back from a concussion that
- 20:38Speaker 2: he had been out for a couple of weeks for
- 20:40Speaker 2: I give him an a minus.
- 20:42Speaker 1: All right, sounds good. Saquon Barkley went over his stats
- 20:45Speaker 1: earlier as well, and boy, I gotta tell you it's
- 20:48Speaker 1: it's it's wonderful when the offensive line opens up those
- 20:51Speaker 1: holes for him, averaged close to five yards per carry
- 20:54Speaker 1: four point eight yards per carry. I'm giving Saquon Barkley
- 20:57Speaker 1: even Kenny gainwell, given the running back position in a
- 21:00Speaker 1: this week, what do you give them?
- 21:02Speaker 2: I'm giving him an A for something completely different than statistics. Okay,
- 21:07Speaker 2: did you notice at the end he could have gone
- 21:09Speaker 2: all the way to the end zone?
- 21:10Speaker 1: Classic this time, classy move. He just he just just
- 21:14Speaker 1: went right down, went down.
- 21:15Speaker 2: You know the last time he had that opportunity, what
- 21:18Speaker 2: did he do ze going?
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 21:20Speaker 2: No, no, last time he had the same opportunity at
- 21:24Speaker 2: the end of the game. Hey, that's right. It costs
- 21:29Speaker 2: them a loss. Yes, So you know what I give
- 21:31Speaker 2: him an a because he's obviously learning how to win.
- 21:34Speaker 2: I thought he's learning how to win.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I thought you were talking about when he was with
- 21:37Speaker 1: the Giants. I thought he did that with the Giants
- 21:39Speaker 1: at one point to actually, okay, that's where I was
- 21:42Speaker 1: going with that. Uh yeah, that's a fair grade. Fair grades,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and and the rationale too. I mean, these guys are
- 21:48Speaker 1: growing up, they're getting better, they're maturing. We've got veterans
- 21:51Speaker 1: on this team now that are doing good things, and
- 21:53Speaker 1: that's why, and a vet.
- 21:55Speaker 2: But let's be honest, and like I used to live
- 21:58Speaker 2: up that way, so I really don't care Giants fans
- 22:00Speaker 2: hate me because they already do. Yeah, but that's a
- 22:03Speaker 2: loser organization from the time that he's been there.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yep.
- 22:06Speaker 2: And yeah, he may be a veteran, but he's got
- 22:09Speaker 2: to learn how to win, just like these rookies.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great point. It's a great point. And
- 22:15Speaker 1: you mentioned AJ Brown. We're going to get into grading
- 22:17Speaker 1: the wide receivers and tight ends receivers this week. Boy.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 1: AJ Brown was a bit disappointing because of reading the
- 22:24Speaker 1: book on the sideline. He was only targeted three times
- 22:28Speaker 1: in this game, caught one ball, for ten yards. In fact,
- 22:31Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard was the most targeted receiver on this team.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Six targets caught four balls for forty seven yards. Davante
- 22:39Speaker 1: Smith was the next highest targeted receiver four targets, caught
- 22:44Speaker 1: all four balls for fifty five yards. You also had
- 22:47Speaker 1: Johan Dotson again just one catch for eleven yards and
- 22:49Speaker 1: a touchdown. Dallas got at that touchdown, by the way,
- 22:53Speaker 1: that was really nasty. That was really nasty, man, those
- 22:57Speaker 1: two stiff arms like that. That was really nice. Actual. Okay, Look,
- 23:01Speaker 1: the receivers really weren't asked to do too too much
- 23:04Speaker 1: in this game, and a lot of it was because
- 23:07Speaker 1: the passing game wasn't necessarily there. So I'm gonna give
- 23:11Speaker 1: the receivers this week a straight up b what do
- 23:13Speaker 1: you give them?
- 23:14Speaker 2: I'll give him an A. And it's only because that
- 23:16Speaker 2: got it touchdown. Yeah, My buddies and I were texting
- 23:20Speaker 2: and they were, you know, ooing and eyeing over the
- 23:22Speaker 2: stiff arm. So I said, yep, that's Dallas Goddard taking
- 23:25Speaker 2: that paycheck from either the Jags or the Jets straight
- 23:28Speaker 2: on the way to the bank and stiff arm and
- 23:30Speaker 2: then tellers to deposit it that, yes, that that touchdown
- 23:37Speaker 2: is going to get him paid. I like him. I
- 23:40Speaker 2: like Dallas Goddard, but I'm fine with Grant Calcatara. I
- 23:43Speaker 2: don't want to pay Dallas Goddard double digit millions each year.
- 23:47Speaker 2: They just he doesn't play often enough. They don't use
- 23:51Speaker 2: the middle of the field with Hurts. Just don't don't
- 23:53Speaker 2: pay him.
- 23:54Speaker 1: All right, we're going to get into that for sure.
- 23:56Speaker 1: That content on the future PSDs Future PSD pot cash shows.
- 24:00Speaker 1: For sure. Offensive line, I'm giving them an A plus.
- 24:03Speaker 1: They are getting an A plus. Talked about the pocket
- 24:06Speaker 1: that they made. They gave and made for Jalen Hurts
- 24:09Speaker 1: throughout this game, opening the holes for Saquon Barkley. A
- 24:12Speaker 1: plus for the offensive line. What do you give them?
- 24:15Speaker 2: Yeah? A plus. I don't see how you could give
- 24:18Speaker 2: them any other any other grade.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I have to say the holding call, the one holding call,
- 24:22Speaker 1: and Lane Johnson was fantastic. When they did the instant replay,
- 24:26Speaker 1: He's like he just is on the ground and he's like,
- 24:30Speaker 1: I'm not giving up a sack, I'm just pulling him down.
- 24:33Speaker 1: It was the great I started laughing. I said, that
- 24:36Speaker 1: is the most exceptional, exceptional holding call. I think I
- 24:39Speaker 1: have ever seen and he's he's one of my favorite
- 24:42Speaker 1: players on the team. I'mre in his jersey right now,
- 24:44Speaker 1: so I love him, love him. So let's move over
- 24:47Speaker 1: to the defensive side of the ball. The defensive line again.
- 24:50Speaker 1: We talked about Nolan Smith. I mean a lot of
- 24:53Speaker 1: pressure on Jordan Love throughout the day. I'm gonna give
- 24:56Speaker 1: the defensive line and A I'm gonna give him straight up,
- 24:58Speaker 1: A what do you give him?
- 25:00Speaker 2: Yeah? Same? Yeah, they are just I mean rig Van
- 25:04Speaker 2: Jerdine really have to blitch glitz much. Not much because yeah,
- 25:09Speaker 2: I don't think it's that he doesn't like to. I
- 25:10Speaker 2: mean we've seen it throughout the year. He has no
- 25:12Speaker 2: problem sending people whenever he didn't need to. Yeah, And
- 25:17Speaker 2: so they had more people back in coverage. I yeah,
- 25:20Speaker 2: I thought they were great today. They didn't.
- 25:22Speaker 1: May We got to talk about the linebackers and I
- 25:24Speaker 1: was going to go over some injuries. Darius Slay went
- 25:27Speaker 1: out with an elbow. He ended up coming back for
- 25:30Speaker 1: the Packers. They were already down Christian Watson, then Romeo
- 25:33Speaker 1: Dobbs and Jayden Reid went out. But this one's gonna hurt.
- 25:36Speaker 1: I think folks Nakobe Dean his knee. He did not return,
- 25:41Speaker 1: and I gotta say, you know, he was having himself
- 25:44Speaker 1: quite a game. Six total tackles. He had two tackles
- 25:48Speaker 1: for a loss. When Oron Burks came in, it was
- 25:51Speaker 1: a different feel for sure, in the middle of that field,
- 25:53Speaker 1: the pursuit of the ball, it was a different feel
- 25:55Speaker 1: for sure. I do like Oron Burks. He had five
- 25:58Speaker 1: total tackles in this game. Still, if this team is
- 26:02Speaker 1: going to be missing Nakobe Dean for any significant period
- 26:05Speaker 1: of time, and I know this is the playoffs, it's like,
- 26:07Speaker 1: well all the time is significant, but really even a
- 26:09Speaker 1: week that's gonna be rough for this middle of the
- 26:12Speaker 1: defense here. But I'm gonna give the linebackers in general
- 26:16Speaker 1: and a minus this week because again you had Zach
- 26:18Speaker 1: Bond with eight total tackles, you had one pass defended,
- 26:22Speaker 1: and also just getting in there making some really good
- 26:25Speaker 1: plays throughout the game. I'm giving them an A. What
- 26:27Speaker 1: do you give the linebackers?
- 26:29Speaker 2: Yeah, they get an A from me. I want to
- 26:32Speaker 2: talk about the field for a second. They put in
- 26:36Speaker 2: new grass this week. Now. I live in New Jersey.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I love Jersey, right, I'm a Jersey guy. But I
- 26:44Speaker 2: don't know where the hell they got this grass from.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Either a both teams have had the worst injury luck
- 26:53Speaker 2: game of the entire season today or something is wrong
- 26:57Speaker 2: with that. I don't ever remember issues like that at
- 27:00Speaker 2: the link. It's one of the reasons why I like
- 27:02Speaker 2: home playoff games because I don't have to worry about
- 27:05Speaker 2: my players being out for a while because they take
- 27:06Speaker 2: good care of the field. It's not met Life, it's
- 27:09Speaker 2: not the dump Science and Jets play.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Yeah, or even down in Washington too. That stadium is horrible.
- 27:15Speaker 1: That field is awful.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Well, see, I give them a pass because they didn't
- 27:19Speaker 2: spend over a billion dollars to build a honk of
- 27:21Speaker 2: concrete and metal in the middle of a swamp. Yeah,
- 27:24Speaker 2: there you go, Giants fans. See, I told you you
- 27:27Speaker 2: can hate me if you want. Your stadium is rap anyway. Yeah,
- 27:32Speaker 2: I don't know what was up with the field, but yeah,
- 27:35Speaker 2: circling back the linebackers, I'm going to give him an a.
- 27:38Speaker 2: I just did not realize that Dean was the play
- 27:42Speaker 2: caller on defense.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and so.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I'm I think Zach Bond can do it right. At
- 27:47Speaker 2: least they have him, who's a veteran to be able
- 27:50Speaker 2: to do it, but it'll be interesting.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Absolutely. By the way, Zach Bond having one of those
- 27:54Speaker 1: interceptions too, I can't believe I just forgot to mention that. So,
- 27:57Speaker 1: I mean, what a what a game for him, what
- 27:59Speaker 1: a game for the linebackers in general? The secondary had
- 28:02Speaker 1: Darius Slay Quinya Mitchell each with an interception. They played
- 28:07Speaker 1: pretty darn well. I mean, you had a Packers receiving
- 28:13Speaker 1: corps where I'm looking at the stats right here, you
- 28:17Speaker 1: had approximately nine different receivers at one point, and overall
- 28:22Speaker 1: they did a great job. The secondary really did a
- 28:24Speaker 1: great job, only giving up two hundred and twelve yards,
- 28:26Speaker 1: and a lot of those yards were in garbage time
- 28:29Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter as the Packers were just needing
- 28:32Speaker 1: to catch up, they had to go away from the
- 28:35Speaker 1: rushing attack. So I'm gonna give the secondary this week.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I'm giving them an A plus. You have two interceptions,
- 28:42Speaker 1: you're making turnovers. I'm given them an A plus. What
- 28:45Speaker 1: do you give them?
- 28:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to give them an A plus. I'm
- 28:51Speaker 2: not normally get a little worked up over playing off
- 28:55Speaker 2: receivers and different things like that, or players being wide
- 28:59Speaker 2: open I think a lot of it was system based today.
- 29:03Speaker 2: They didn't need to put pressure at the line of
- 29:06Speaker 2: scrimmage against any of these wide receivers. I think this
- 29:09Speaker 2: was really we're going to try to stay healthy. And
- 29:13Speaker 2: he still wound up getting three picks today, so I
- 29:16Speaker 2: really can't complain.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Nope, can't complain at all. All Right, let's get over
- 29:20Speaker 1: to move over to coaching, I should say and offense defense,
- 29:23Speaker 1: Special teams. An interesting stat that I read from our
- 29:28Speaker 1: friend Jeff Kerrover at CBS Sports as it pertains the
- 29:31Speaker 1: special teams and won Jake Elliott. Jake Elliott has never
- 29:35Speaker 1: missed a field goal in the playoffs, never missed a
- 29:38Speaker 1: field goal. He's sixteen of sixteen. He has missed three
- 29:41Speaker 1: extra points in the playoffs. Now he's twenty three of sixteen.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Just an interesting stat to put out there. But I
- 29:49Speaker 1: am going to give special teams an a minus. I
- 29:52Speaker 1: give them the minus because of Jake Elliot missing the
- 29:55Speaker 1: extra point in this game, but you had the first
- 29:58Speaker 1: initial turnover of the game. I think overall, the special
- 30:02Speaker 1: teams played pretty well. I'm going to give him an
- 30:03Speaker 1: a minus. What do you give them?
- 30:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll give him an a minus, mostly because I
- 30:09Speaker 2: guess it was Cooper de Gene that was back there
- 30:12Speaker 2: where he just got pummeled on a punt because he
- 30:15Speaker 2: didn't call a fair catch. I don't know what he
- 30:19Speaker 2: was thinking, but if that's the largest issue I have
- 30:21Speaker 2: on special teams, be an A minus.
- 30:24Speaker 1: All right. Very good defensive coaching, Vic Fangio per usual.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I feel getting an A plus. We went over everything
- 30:31Speaker 1: with all the units A plus.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, the only thing that I would change
- 30:36Speaker 2: if I were him, because they don't have any other
- 30:38Speaker 2: wide receivers, I just would have blitzed the crap out
- 30:40Speaker 2: of them. Yeah, but that's my personal opinion with the defense,
- 30:46Speaker 2: So I'm not going to be upset. He did a
- 30:49Speaker 2: great job. If you can give up less than fourteen
- 30:51Speaker 2: points to a playoff team that had a winning record,
- 30:55Speaker 2: not one of these you know, like eight to nine
- 30:57Speaker 2: playoff teams, A playoff team with winning record, I count
- 31:01Speaker 2: that a massive point.
- 31:02Speaker 1: All right. And to close out our grades in terms
- 31:06Speaker 1: of coaching the offensive coaching Kellen Moore and Nick Sirianni,
- 31:10Speaker 1: I'm going to give these gentlemen a B minus this week.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Yet a first quarter I felt that was played very
- 31:16Speaker 1: well from a coaching standpoint. A fourth quarter that was
- 31:20Speaker 1: was was played again pretty well from a coaching standpoint.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Second and third quarters not so much. We talked about
- 31:26Speaker 1: it earlier before the break. I thought, Josh, you outlined
- 31:29Speaker 1: some things very very well, and it's one of the
- 31:31Speaker 1: reasons why I'm going to give this coaching the offensive
- 31:34Speaker 1: coaching staff a B minus this week. What do you
- 31:37Speaker 1: give them?
- 31:39Speaker 2: I'm flipping between a D plus and a C minus. Okay,
- 31:42Speaker 2: I really struggled with the game plan. I know that
- 31:47Speaker 2: at the end of the day they came away with
- 31:49Speaker 2: more runs, but just like Love patted the stats at
- 31:53Speaker 2: the end of the game, the Eagles padded their rushing numbers.
- 31:57Speaker 2: They ran a ton when there was five minutes and
- 32:00Speaker 2: last left in the game. Like, I can't. I'm gonna
- 32:05Speaker 2: set that aside.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:06Speaker 2: I really struggle with the idea of really putting in
- 32:11Speaker 2: Hurts his first game back, putting so much on him.
- 32:14Speaker 2: I really don't feel that that's fair, and especially because
- 32:19Speaker 2: the run game was working and it was working well.
- 32:23Speaker 1: So anyway, well, look, hey, look, this Eagles team wins
- 32:28Speaker 1: the wild card game against the Green Bay Packers by
- 32:32Speaker 1: a score of twenty two to ten. They're heading to
- 32:34Speaker 1: the divisional round. As of us recording this again, we
- 32:38Speaker 1: are not sure who they are going to be facing.
- 32:41Speaker 1: But buddy, it was great talking to you. It was
- 32:44Speaker 1: great going through this, going through the themes and the grades.
- 32:47Speaker 1: As always, very much appreciate you.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, Jeff, anytime, it's purely my pleasure.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Again, folks, it's Josh Shuster. He's Josh Shuster. I should say,
- 32:56Speaker 1: you're not an it for God's sake. He's Josh Shuster
- 32:59Speaker 1: from philadelphiasoccernow dot com. If you're into some Union, if
- 33:04Speaker 1: you're into some Union storylines, what's happening with the team,
- 33:07Speaker 1: head on over to Philadelphia soccernow dot com. Love visiting
- 33:10Speaker 1: that site, and uh yeah, we are going to have
- 33:13Speaker 1: a lot of nice content coming your way this coming
- 33:16Speaker 1: week in the world of Philly sports sports world in general.
- 33:19Speaker 1: We're gonna get into some college football talk on our
- 33:21Speaker 1: Table Talk show and not sure in our opposition Territory
- 33:25Speaker 1: podcast will be uploaded this week at some point, it
- 33:28Speaker 1: definitely will. That being said, everybody take care. We'll catch
- 33:31Speaker 1: you next time.
