- 1:15Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism
- 1:17Initiative, I'm Ted Evans. This is North Shore
- 1:21News. For Earth Day this year, Lenox and Addington
- 1:32County Council and staff have committed to conscious
- 1:35consumption practices going forward. This comes
- 1:37as an effort to take the environment into account,
- 1:40as is outlined in the county's climate action
- 1:42plan. This year, the county decided on the theme
- 1:44of conscious consumption. Warden Nathan Townend
- 1:47talked about the 2026 theme. This year's theme
- 1:50is conscious consumption. The 2026 theme aims
- 1:54to encourage citizens, municipalities, organizations
- 1:57and businesses to commit to conscious practices,
- 2:01whether that's energy -related, material, digital,
- 2:05organizational, behavioral or collective. This
- 2:08theme aligns with the County of Lenox and Addington's
- 2:10Climate Action Plan, which challenges us to take
- 2:13the environment into account in all of our decision
- 2:16-making. This commitment to conscious consumption
- 2:19by council and staff will help to maintain a
- 2:22strong, resilient and responsible county community
- 2:25for years to come. For Amherst Island Radio and
- 2:28the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted Evans.
- 2:31This is North Shore News. The South Frontenac
- 2:43Stock Sport Club hosted the 10th annual Canadian
- 2:46Ice Stock Federation Season Ending Tournament
- 2:49this past weekend at the Gananoque Curling Club
- 2:52and Amherst Island Radio was covering all the
- 2:55action. Hey, CJAI 101 .3 FM calling Sunday night
- 3:01live on location for North Shore News and we
- 3:04are at the... year -end ice stock Bondspiel in
- 3:08Gananoque. And I'm going to talk to some of the
- 3:10players. We're in sport in Team Canada. And guys,
- 3:13I want you to tell me first how you got involved
- 3:16with the sport and tell us about the exciting
- 3:19news that you're coming. So I'm going to go to
- 3:21you first. All right. Well, how we got involved
- 3:25with the sport is basically our entire family
- 3:27plays all the time. It's really fun. My dad and
- 3:32me always come over to Harris Smith and we always
- 3:36play. I've been playing for a very long time.
- 3:39Recently my brother just got into it as well
- 3:41and we've been recruiting more people each and
- 3:45every day. You've been playing for a very long
- 3:47time, so how long could you be playing? You can
- 3:50play from whatever age, it really does not matter.
- 3:54Currently I'm 16 and I've been playing probably
- 3:56since 2015 maybe. Yeah. Sorry, what was your
- 4:01name again? My name is Lucas, Lucas Hammer. All
- 4:04right, so we're gonna go over here. What's your
- 4:05name? My name is Preston. I recently joined two
- 4:10years ago and me and my dad just have fun doing
- 4:15it. Always fun to come back out and I love the
- 4:18sport. And you guys have some exciting news?
- 4:23Are you guys going on a trip or something? Yeah,
- 4:25we're going up to Austria to support Canada in
- 4:28stock. And going to be a fun time. That's awesome.
- 4:33I wish you guys all the best over there. And
- 4:35we're going to talk to this young man. What's
- 4:36your name, sir? My name is Caleb Hammer. And
- 4:40yeah, just like we said, we're going up to Austria
- 4:42and first ever Canadian youth team to ever go
- 4:45up. So it's going to be very fun. And I recently
- 4:48just got in the sport about three and a half
- 4:50years ago. So that's awesome. And you say about
- 4:53three and a half years ago, and now you're going
- 4:55to Austria to play for Team Canada. How cool
- 4:57is that? Think it's really cool. I think we should
- 5:00we've been trying to get more kids to try to
- 5:02join in sport and I don't know It's hard to explain
- 5:05but so what is your message to to try and get
- 5:08more kids involved though? You've been playing
- 5:10since a young lad. So how do we get more use
- 5:12out? So it's it's an easy sport to learn all
- 5:15you have to do is just practice a lot and come
- 5:17out to Harrow Smith with us We always practice
- 5:19every what day? Every Tuesday, so yeah, if you
- 5:24want to come out and do that Yeah room for a
- 5:2755 year old has been oh, yeah, definitely All
- 5:31right, and who are we got here? My name is Jayden.
- 5:34I've been practicing since this spring actually
- 5:36brand new But um, it's been a journey what guy
- 5:40involved interested in the sport actually my
- 5:42friend Lucas I've been friends with him for about
- 5:45seven or eight years now but Chris his dad introduced
- 5:50me to the sport and ever since I've been hooked
- 5:53And now what is the one thing that you didn't
- 5:56expect when you started playing that you really
- 5:58like about the sport? Probably the target aspect
- 6:03and the knocking and like strategy and stuff
- 6:05like that I was gonna say I just like to rip
- 6:08it as hard as I can and do the takeouts, but
- 6:10Yeah, well, that's good. So I want to wish you
- 6:12guys all the best in Austria You're making history
- 6:15the first u16 team ever from Canada So we really
- 6:19want to congratulate you and when you come back,
- 6:22hopefully you'll come on the radio and tell me,
- 6:24tell us all about it. For sure. All right, now
- 6:26I'm going to go to the last word to the big guy
- 6:28here, Chris Hammers, no stranger to Amherst Island
- 6:31Radio. So tell us a little bit about the tournament.
- 6:33I know we talked a lot about the U16s in the
- 6:35past, but just talk about what this tournament
- 6:37means to you and your club and your sport. So
- 6:39for the Federation itself, this is the time when
- 6:41everybody comes together to play and actually
- 6:43on ice versus we play usually in the summer in
- 6:45Hale -Smith on the Paverstone Lanes. So this
- 6:48time is a good time to use your winter shocks.
- 6:50Everybody together and get an octave wave. We
- 6:52have good times. We go back to the hotel and
- 6:53have some sociable drinks and that kind of stuff.
- 6:55But it brings everybody from the Canadian Ice
- 6:57Stock Federation, which is mainly out of Kitchener
- 6:59Waterloo and Bay Area. But everybody comes down
- 7:02here to celebrate this event. So for 10 years
- 7:04that the Federation has sort of reignited itself,
- 7:07got going again, that we have this many people
- 7:09here. This is just awesome. 35, 40 people here
- 7:12playing today. This is what the Federation is.
- 7:14If we can grow this to 80 or more or 60, you
- 7:18know, then we're rocking, we're rocking the stocks
- 7:20and we're growing the sport. That's the all time
- 7:22goal of the Federation is to make this sport
- 7:24bigger was what it once used to be. Very good.
- 7:29And you know, you can consider me a plus one
- 7:31growing your sport. So I really appreciate all
- 7:34that you do for the community, giving kids a
- 7:37chance to play the sport and travel, represent
- 7:40their country. So I want to wish you all the
- 7:42best and good luck with the rest of the tournament.
- 7:45Thank you. We love having you down here. Amherst
- 7:47Island's radio. Always a great time for us and
- 7:49we love working with you. You know, so much for
- 7:51the reunion that you did with us. You helped
- 7:53us with the stock and just spreading out in the
- 7:55communities. It's not just Amherst Island. It's
- 7:57so fun. I could scan an aqua. You're all over
- 7:59the place, you know, and we really, really, really
- 8:01appreciate the support from your radio station
- 8:02yourself. You know, Lorianne came down today
- 8:05from her, her, the side of the media thing and
- 8:07you guys work together and that's what's bringing
- 8:09stocks all about, bringing everybody together.
- 8:11So thank you, Colin. We really appreciate you
- 8:12coming down to help us out. It's my pleasure.
- 8:15So for CJI North Shore news, I'm calling Sunday
- 8:19night and you're listening to Amherst Island
- 8:20radio. The Amherst Island Recreation Association
- 8:31had a successful 2025 according to their recent
- 8:34presentation. Members of the association shared
- 8:36a review of their last year of operations at
- 8:38Loyalist Township Council's latest meeting. Chair
- 8:41of the association Chelsea McDonald spoke about
- 8:44the makeup of the association and their last
- 8:46year of operations. We have a board of directors
- 8:50for our not -for -profit. There are nine directors
- 8:51on our board with three executives. We have 10
- 8:54volunteers and we have program leaders and helpers.
- 8:59This year we were able to have two paid instructors
- 9:02provide programs for us and we were able to provide
- 9:0513 programs in total with a variety of participants
- 9:08ranging from 4 to 19 participants per program.
- 9:14In the past we've done a variety of sports related
- 9:18programs. We find that Zumba is a really big
- 9:21popular one with everyone on the island, especially
- 9:25young moms and kids come out to enjoy that. program
- 9:30and this year we were able to find another yoga
- 9:32instructor that was able that is actually a community
- 9:34member so someone local that's able to come out
- 9:37and provide yoga to the community and that was
- 9:40another big accomplishment for us because it
- 9:43was a really good program. Volleyball has always
- 9:46been really popular with the the young adults
- 9:49as well as some some older adults and we find
- 9:52that in the spring we get a higher volume with
- 9:56university students coming back to play. In the
- 9:59fall we actually changed it to 13 plus because
- 10:01we had some eager young students that wanted
- 10:05to join as well. McDonald spoke about new programming
- 10:07in the last year. The newest thing we were able
- 10:10to provide for youth this year was electronics.
- 10:14We had an island resident who reached out and
- 10:16wanted to teach robotics to the kids. So they
- 10:20had done a little bit in the classroom at school,
- 10:22but she really wanted to provide a camp. So we
- 10:25worked with her and were able to provide a four
- 10:27-day camp in August for kids to learn about robotics.
- 10:31They made some really neat Christmas decorations
- 10:33that lit up and robots that moved. and it was
- 10:36so successful she opted to start an actual club
- 10:39starting in September where the kids go twice
- 10:42a month and they learn how to do coding and make
- 10:46more robots. All Ages Sports Night is honestly
- 10:52one of my favorites because it's The kids come
- 10:56out to play and we do a variety of different
- 11:00sports from soccer to volleyball to pickleball
- 11:03to basketball and the absolute favorite is dodgeball
- 11:06and every week they ask if we can play dodgeball.
- 11:09McDonald spoke about programming throughout the
- 11:11winter and spring. Winter Walking Club is something
- 11:13that we provide to the community in the winter
- 11:17months. So from December to April where the community
- 11:22has a safe space to walk and to socialize. One
- 11:25of my other favorites is youth art. So each spring,
- 11:28this is the third year we've doing it. We're
- 11:30able to provide a youth workshop for art with
- 11:33using local island volunteers to provide these
- 11:37classes. Last year we did watercolor and pencil
- 11:41drawing and animation. Treasurer for the association
- 11:44Mike Walhaut spoke about their finances for the
- 11:47year. We're running at a small deficit. We do
- 11:50fundraising and and we kind of do it as needed.
- 11:56So we're making up the difference that way. This
- 11:58was our first year as well, so we had to get
- 12:00through the accountant and all the not -for -profit
- 12:04filing processes that are costly, and we're gonna
- 12:08look at ways that we can save money and perhaps
- 12:10access some grants as well. Councillor Lorna
- 12:13Willis shared her experience with the programming
- 12:14on Amherst Island. The programming that we get
- 12:18to enjoy on the island right now is very special
- 12:20and I was at one of the children's art programs
- 12:24the other day and it's kind of fun to see all
- 12:29the kids getting together in the school after
- 12:31school voluntarily. For Amherst Island Radio
- 12:34and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted
- 12:37Evans. This is North Shore News. CJAI 101 .3
- 12:50FM North Shore News and we are going to go back
- 12:54to a little bit of ice stock. And we've got some
- 12:57exciting news for our local listening area. Our
- 13:01South Frontenac chapter of the Ice Dock Federation
- 13:04is making history this summer as the U16 coached
- 13:09by Chris Hammer is going to compete in Austria
- 13:12for the very first time at this level. So first
- 13:15of all, Chris, I've got Carl here as well, who's
- 13:17taking his team to Brazil for the Americas later
- 13:20this summer. Let's just talk about this historic
- 13:22moment for your sport in our community with the
- 13:25U16. 16th. Absolutely. It's a part of history
- 13:28for the Federation of the Canadian Ice Hockey
- 13:31Federation for our club and for a team that's
- 13:33under the age of U16 to experience heading to
- 13:36the Austrian Alps to play where the sport is
- 13:39heavily played in Austria. To be part of it,
- 13:41to be part of a European Championship is a once
- 13:43-in -a -lifetime experience. Myself, I'm going,
- 13:46my two sons, Lucas and Caleb, their friend Jayden
- 13:49Kermien is coming out and Preston Klein and also
- 13:52his dad, Adam, is coaching with me this year.
- 13:55Adam's family is actually, his dad's side is
- 13:57from Germany. So he's kind of putting the European
- 14:00spin onto his family too, which is really neat.
- 14:02The experience alone and getting ready for this
- 14:04and just being part of it for these kids is a
- 14:06pretty big highlight. Yeah. And it's going to
- 14:08be a heck of a road trip too, eh? Absolutely.
- 14:11We've got a long road trip to get there. A lot
- 14:13of fundraising, a lot of money and the cost of
- 14:15the flights and the hotels and a few expenses
- 14:18along the way as you expect traveling across
- 14:20the ocean to the other side of the pond there.
- 14:22It comes with the territory, you know, but the
- 14:24kids are more... We have a good backbone here
- 14:27in South Frontenac and the Kingston community,
- 14:30and we're really looking forward to it. And for
- 14:32somebody that is interested in following along
- 14:35or maybe helping out to support the cause, what's
- 14:38the best way to do that, to get in touch with
- 14:41you guys? So they can reach out to the Canadian
- 14:44Ice Stock Federation Facebook page. They could
- 14:46send us a private message or they can reach out
- 14:48to the South Front Knock Star Sport Club, anybody,
- 14:51anyone who is there. Facebook is our easiest
- 14:53way to reach out. They can send again, send us
- 14:56a private message there. We're looking for support
- 14:58or community donations to support the youth team
- 15:01themselves to get them over by reaching out to
- 15:04actually anybody in the club or myself or Carl
- 15:06or the Canadian Stuck Federation president. That
- 15:09means we can have a phone call or an email, a
- 15:11chat, whatever we want to do. We'll make it happen
- 15:14and we can reach out and we'd love the support.
- 15:17All right, Chris. Well, certainly here, all of
- 15:19us at Amherst Island Radio will be following
- 15:21along and wishing you well. So good luck with
- 15:24the youth 16s in Austria. Danke schön. Thank
- 15:26you. And Carl, Brazil, I think of ice stock.
- 15:31I do think of it as certainly South Frontenac,
- 15:34because that's where I was introduced, but I
- 15:36do think of it as Austrian German. So tell us
- 15:40about the Americas and Brazil. Is it going to
- 15:42be on ice or is it on the asphalt? So they actually,
- 15:45it's a special concrete that's got pebbles, stones
- 15:51in it that... Basically, the important thing
- 15:53when you're not playing on ice is that whether
- 15:56it's asphalt or the paverstone is the air pockets.
- 16:00In our paverstone lanes in Harrow Smith, every
- 16:03grout line, every joint is like an air pocket
- 16:06that allows the stock plate to slide efficiently
- 16:10across, right? So their lanes are concrete and
- 16:15obviously Brazil doesn't have to worry about
- 16:16frost and heaving of things, right? So they can
- 16:20use concrete and it's got special petals in it
- 16:23and it's quite a beautiful surface to play on.
- 16:25I've never been there yet, but I've heard all
- 16:27about it. And the interesting thing is that Brazil
- 16:30kind of gives us a good idea of, I would say
- 16:34they're about maybe 10 or 15 years ahead of us.
- 16:39Obviously it's a Germanic community in Brazil
- 16:41that we're heading to for the America Cup. Grande
- 16:44do Sul is sort of a bigger area. And they had
- 16:49some Germanic people that had still connections
- 16:52over in Germany. And they saw that the sport
- 16:56was being played and really thought, well, this
- 16:59could be really cool to try to bring back to
- 17:01Brazil. And literally that's how it started.
- 17:04And I think that was either late 90s or early
- 17:072000s or something like that. And it literally
- 17:09started with the idea of a couple of people.
- 17:12And here we go to 2026 and Brazil actually when
- 17:16we got, you know, we competed last year in the
- 17:18world championships and, you know, Brazil is
- 17:21in certainly the top five, you know, probably
- 17:25around the fourth or fifth in terms of the men's
- 17:28and the women now jumped up also to the A division.
- 17:32So they haven't basically in 26 years turned
- 17:35into a stock nation and they don't even have
- 17:38ice. they'll head over a little bit earlier before
- 17:42World Championships and just train for maybe
- 17:44a week on ice to get their feet on. But outside
- 17:47of that, they're training always on their concrete
- 17:49lanes. Anyway, so we kind of make history too
- 17:53this time around because it's the first time
- 17:56that Canada has ever sent two men's teams and
- 17:59two women's teams to an America Cup. Usually,
- 18:02we're just able to send one man and no women.
- 18:09we're really pushing it now. And we do have most
- 18:13of the team being built upon members from South
- 18:17Front ExStock Sport Club this time around. I
- 18:19think out of the 16 people, I think 14 are connected
- 18:22to our club. So it's again, another great sort
- 18:27of testament to the growth of our club and how
- 18:30successful we are in terms of participation.
- 18:32We certainly wish you all the best as you embark
- 18:36on this historic summer tournament and For more
- 18:40information you can go to the South Frontenac
- 18:45Stocksport Club on Facebook And you can look
- 18:48for their upcoming events. There's a mixed dual
- 18:51event in Harrow Smith on May the 2nd June 20th.
- 18:55There's the CISF and the South Frontenac stock
- 18:58Sports Club in Harrowsmith. August 15th, there's
- 19:02the Club Tourney in Harrowsmith. And one that
- 19:06I've already circled on my calendar, October
- 19:0831st, Halloween, stockbash at Harrowsmith. For
- 19:12more information, you can message them or email
- 19:15them at southfrontnackstocksport at gmail .com.
- 19:21For CJA 101 .3 FM's North Shore News, I'm Colin
- 19:25Sunday night. Loyalist Township Council approved
- 19:37additional funding to complete the construction
- 19:39of the W .J. Henderson Community Centre Renewal
- 19:42Project. Staff's report presented an updated
- 19:44business case for the construction and operation
- 19:46of the centre. The report reflected a variance
- 19:49of over half a million dollars since staff's
- 19:51first estimates were presented to council in
- 19:53November 2023. Engineering and Environment Manager
- 19:56with the Township Luke McDonald talks about the
- 19:58original business case staff presented in 2023.
- 20:02Back in November 2023, staff brought forward
- 20:05the validation report which outlined the scope
- 20:08of the WJ project as well as the business case
- 20:12which presented the financing. and operational
- 20:17costs for the project and future operations of
- 20:21the facility included in that business case where
- 20:24a number of assumptions made about both expenses
- 20:27that would be incurred, as well as funding that
- 20:30would be secured or not. Treasurer and director
- 20:32of finance with the Township, David Clasey, breaks
- 20:35down the remaining costs and how it may affect
- 20:37the Township's tax rate in the future. Since
- 20:39the validation report was done, councils received
- 20:43the Township's asset management plan. The revised
- 20:46amount for yearly amount or impact to the operating
- 20:50budget is 737 ,000. The good news is that of
- 20:57that 737 ,000, we actually built in 479 ,000
- 21:03of that in the 20. 26 operating budget. So we
- 21:07build, we started to build in some of the amount
- 21:09for the debt repayment. And we also built in
- 21:13a fair size chunk of the staffing costs because
- 21:16we've already budgeted for at least a half a
- 21:19year of operations for the facility. So there
- 21:24is a significant portion of that already built
- 21:26in. In addition, we'll have the hundred and eighty
- 21:29thousand of revenue on top of that coming in
- 21:32for the sponsorship revenue. Uh, so that really
- 21:35only leaves about 78, 79 ,000 left to build in,
- 21:40to potentially build into the tax rate in 27,
- 21:43which results in about a third of a percent tax
- 21:45increase. Manager of Recreation, Parks and Facilities
- 21:48with the Township Matthew Sibolsky explains one
- 21:50of the larger variances in the report. Total
- 21:52staffing is projected in the revised report for
- 21:552027 compared to the previous report, um, outlining
- 21:58an increase to our staffing model at $535 ,000,
- 22:02um, where that increase does show up is $12 ,000
- 22:07for our administrative capacities and areas versus
- 22:102026 validation. For arena capacities and areas,
- 22:15there is a variance or an increase of $223 ,000
- 22:19versus 2026 validation. And in our aquatics,
- 22:22we do have a variance of $299 ,000 for current
- 22:27projections versus validation. Cebulski went
- 22:30on to detail new staffing requirements in the
- 22:32Aquatic Center. Aquatics does drive most of this
- 22:34variance. So our updated 2027 operating model
- 22:38does reflect some staffing needs that are required
- 22:41to safely run a two pool aquatic center. Majority
- 22:45of these needs are based in lifeguard and instructor
- 22:48coverage, supervision across two pools for simultaneous
- 22:53programs, as well as operational backfill for
- 22:55training and stat holiday dates. McDonald's speaks
- 22:58about one of the positive variances in the report.
- 23:01The community sport and recreation infrastructure
- 23:04fund provided by the province of Ontario was
- 23:07not initially projected in the original validation
- 23:10report, but the staff has secured the nine point.
- 23:14approximately $9 .2 million that is included
- 23:18there. So obviously that's a large change for
- 23:23the better to the township. So that was excellent
- 23:25news. McDonald noted the future of the centre.
- 23:28At the end of the day, the facility is going
- 23:30to be a beautiful facility. I think everyone
- 23:33is very proud of what's being done and it should
- 23:38be reflected in the final project outcomes. Councillor
- 23:40Paul Broderick spoke about the importance of
- 23:42the variances. We've all had housework done and
- 23:44you find the surprise behind the drywall. And
- 23:47when you do a project like this, it's a little
- 23:49bigger than a little surprise behind the drywall.
- 23:51But I know staff work to keep that as low as
- 23:53possible. Councillor Mike Buderick showed his
- 23:55support for the project. Travelling around to
- 23:59different communities to see facilities that
- 24:00other municipalities have. And this is one to
- 24:03be proud of considering its age and the work
- 24:05that has gone into it to to keep it what it is.
- 24:09Mayor Jim Hagedorn spoke about the future of
- 24:12the W .J. Henderson Community Center. We are
- 24:15taking on a significant project for a township
- 24:18this size. We are succeeding. We have run into
- 24:21a few extras, but we're going to complete it.
- 24:24We're going to be able to enjoy it. And I'm thankful
- 24:27that the next generation will be able to enjoy
- 24:30it just like we have when our forefathers originally
- 24:34built the project. For Amherst Island Radio and
