John Niland, the legendary three-time All-Pro guard who anchored the Dallas Cowboys’ historic 1972 Super Bowl win, has passed away at 82. A Pro Bowl staple from 1968–73 and a first-team All-Pro in ’69, ’71, and ’72, Niland was the immovable wall protecting Roger Staubach in that iconic 24-3 victory over Miami. Drafted fifth overall in 1966 from Iowa, he started 111 of 124 games over nine seasons and was later inducted into the Hawkeyes’ Athletics Hall of Fame.
