- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us now, Lady, welcome to Meat Eater Trivia Podcast.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Don't even know when to start. Hey, welcome to meat
- 0:36Speaker 1: Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am here in bos Angelas, Montana.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm your host, Ryan Callahan and you're not with me today,
- 0:48Speaker 1: Corin Schneider and Corey Halkins.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Howdy, folks.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Fun fact for you, if you wear a big fake
- 0:57Speaker 1: wig on your face, it messes with the audio. Dude,
- 1:00Speaker 1: static electricity, Phil, what's happening over there in the boot?
- 1:04Speaker 3: Oh? Not a whole lot.
- 1:05Speaker 4: What's going on with you?
- 1:06Speaker 1: Kel Oh?
- 1:07Speaker 4: Not a whole lot.
- 1:09Speaker 1: So youth is in the air. It's October thirty one
- 1:14Speaker 1: and children still dress up. So we're going to talk
- 1:17Speaker 1: about that. What motivates them? Why are they here? I
- 1:23Speaker 1: think we should start with our actual ages first, but
- 1:26Speaker 1: we won't because there's a lady present snorts under the table.
- 1:30Speaker 1: This is what I'm talking about, Karen. You're dressed up?
- 1:33Speaker 5: Is something I am. I am a Chinese takeout box.
- 1:41Speaker 1: That says, enjoy What's in the box, Low Maine, what's
- 1:49Speaker 1: in the box?
- 1:51Speaker 6: Cory? What are you? Well?
- 1:53Speaker 2: I'm Merlin the Wizard. But this is also how I
- 1:55Speaker 2: feel after an unsuccessful archery season, Old and Gray.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Oh okay, nice. Is there any other reason for the theme.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Well, my kid, my six year old boy Marshall, he's
- 2:08Speaker 2: gonna be King Arthur of the Arthurian book series stories.
- 2:13Speaker 2: So I figured i'd go in there as the short
- 2:17Speaker 2: Merlin sweet, assuming Merlin was probably six ' two. I'm
- 2:21Speaker 2: a few inches shorter than the real Merlin. But yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 2: here I am.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Any think just magical powers go with height hand in hand,
- 2:30Speaker 1: well sort of.
- 2:30Speaker 2: He's probably got a duck a lot where I'm just
- 2:33Speaker 2: going right through, so got that going for me. But yeah,
- 2:36Speaker 2: I feel like height might be able to help you
- 2:37Speaker 2: see the future. You can see around the earth a
- 2:39Speaker 2: little bit farther.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I like it, But I like it, Phil, Yes,
- 2:44Speaker 1: you're dressed up as a something. I thought it was
- 2:46Speaker 1: from Beetlejuice. It looks very similar to one of the
- 2:48Speaker 1: little beal Juice monsters.
- 2:50Speaker 4: No, this is just a generic wraith, but I like
- 2:54Speaker 4: that the eyes glow and it's kind of like an Avian.
- 2:57Speaker 4: It's an avian looking skull, right, it's scary it is? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 3:01Speaker 4: I don't know. Would you like what's the what's the
- 3:03Speaker 4: closest like real life comp to what this skull looks like.
- 3:06Speaker 4: What would you say? Somebody's probably seen like a few
- 3:09Speaker 4: bird skulls in their life.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Well, there's that giant stork in Africa that's got a
- 3:15Speaker 1: very similar beak to that. What is that albatross? No,
- 3:20Speaker 1: it's it's a it's a stork. I think it's one
- 3:22Speaker 1: of the largest birds outside of like the emu and
- 3:25Speaker 1: the ostrich m. Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I was gonna say, you look like a pelican.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And Phil you have kids, right, I do?
- 3:30Speaker 4: I have two children.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Okay, so your guys's costumes are making sense. Let's go
- 3:34Speaker 1: back to Carin. You're an adult who dressed up.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Why because they're on the radio live.
- 3:42Speaker 4: You know.
- 3:42Speaker 5: It's for the amusement of others. Oh, and it brings
- 3:45Speaker 5: joy to one's heart sometimes, no matter how old you are.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Oh, we also have a thrilling contest in the office today.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Best costume wins best costume.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Oh so awesome.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I think we got top four costumes so far.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Uh. Yeah.
- 4:05Speaker 1: For some reason, probably due to my email settings, I
- 4:08Speaker 1: don't get a lot of office emails.
- 4:10Speaker 4: You don't say, I do say. Well, first of all,
- 4:14Speaker 4: cal you're dressed up, but not in the way people
- 4:15Speaker 4: might think. I think I've seen you wear this exact
- 4:17Speaker 4: outfit to sports men's conventions before.
- 4:21Speaker 1: That is that true? Maybe this this is a actual
- 4:25Speaker 1: pheasant tie.
- 4:27Speaker 4: It looks wonderful.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you. Yeah, it's very classy. And I
- 4:31Speaker 1: got this. This is my most worn and most favorite
- 4:37Speaker 1: sports coat, of which I own two and I got
- 4:41Speaker 1: it for seven dollars at a thrift shop in Ketchumidaho.
- 4:46Speaker 4: The lovely corduroy. Thank you to.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Get some obow patches. You do starting to fade back there, Yeah,
- 4:53Speaker 1: but Granny's dead so that was my seamstress. Anyway, Corey,
- 4:59Speaker 1: you just got back from a successful hunt. Carrinne, I
- 5:02Speaker 1: know you had a successful opening day hunt. You guys
- 5:07Speaker 1: were both Opening day hunts. Yeah, Corey was guiding, helping
- 5:13Speaker 1: assist day, helping a friend.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I guided for too long to say, I'm still right.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I was helping a buddy.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Spencer Newhart, which I wish he was here to tell
- 5:21Speaker 2: the story.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it's odd that he's not. I thought he would be.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Yeah, he's probably cutting meat.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Oh he might be his elk.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, so who wants to tell their tale? First?
- 5:31Speaker 2: Here go ahead, Corey, Well, yeah, I'm happy to Spencer Newhart,
- 5:36Speaker 2: as we all know, the host of Meat Eater Trivia,
- 5:39Speaker 2: drew a really good rifle tag for Montana and I
- 5:43Speaker 2: went out along with another ex mediator colleague and a
- 5:47Speaker 2: few of Spencer's buddies from South Dakota, and we all
- 5:50Speaker 2: went out to help Spencer find his first bowl and
- 5:53Speaker 2: we were successful opening morning by I think eight fifteen,
- 5:56Speaker 2: we had a nice six by four on the ground,
- 6:00Speaker 2: an old fighter, a warrior.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Did you just did you see him that morning or
- 6:05Speaker 5: did you put him to bed the night before?
- 6:07Speaker 2: A couple of Spencer's buddies dug him up the day
- 6:10Speaker 2: before the night before, so we had all split up
- 6:14Speaker 2: the day before opener to cover some ground and find
- 6:17Speaker 2: some milk, and we found plenty of elk. So we
- 6:19Speaker 2: had Plan A, B and C going into opening day.
- 6:22Speaker 2: And even with a good trophy unit tag, there were
- 6:28Speaker 2: still some other hunters in there creating a little pressure.
- 6:31Speaker 2: So our Plan A hit the dirt by about four
- 6:34Speaker 2: point thirty in the morning, a couple hours before daylight.
- 6:36Speaker 2: We had to reroute to Plan B and they were
- 6:41Speaker 2: still fired up bugling where we were, so right at
- 6:44Speaker 2: daylight we were able to put eyes on one of
- 6:45Speaker 2: the elk that were spotted the day before, and again,
- 6:49Speaker 2: I think thirty minutes after the sun came up, we
- 6:52Speaker 2: had him down on the ground. Spencer made a couple
- 6:54Speaker 2: of great shots on him from a long ways out. Oh,
- 6:57Speaker 2: practice made perfect for Spencer.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and you said you were able to turn the
- 7:03Speaker 1: herd with a bugle, Yeah, which is sweet. I mean, yeah,
- 7:07Speaker 1: he got the full elk hunting experience, seeing what elk
- 7:13Speaker 1: do in the during the rut more in September. But
- 7:16Speaker 1: this was late October October twenty sixth and these elk
- 7:20Speaker 1: were still very fired up.
- 7:23Speaker 2: The bowl and the cows were kinda They were about
- 7:25Speaker 2: six hundred yards away, walking slightly away. So I decided
- 7:30Speaker 2: to rip a bugle just to see what would happen
- 7:31Speaker 2: because the herd bowl was so talkative, and it actually
- 7:34Speaker 2: turned the cows and they started kind of running towards us.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Stopped at about five hundred yards out, and the bowl
- 7:42Speaker 2: was a little hesitant to come in, but the cows
- 7:45Speaker 2: wanted to come in, and of course he wanted to
- 7:47Speaker 2: follow those cows, so got ye a little bit closer
- 7:50Speaker 2: and Spencer was able to put a couple of good
- 7:52Speaker 2: shots into him. Yeah, it was great.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Love that.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Congrat Spencer, new heart.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Congrats grat Spencer.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Care in what happened to you?
- 8:03Speaker 5: Well, I'll make it short.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Can you pull that mike a little before you.
- 8:09Speaker 5: I'll make it short. There are definitely some highs and lows.
- 8:13Speaker 5: I was out with myself in a spot I've successfully
- 8:18Speaker 5: harvested mule deer from and this year I noticed the
- 8:22Speaker 5: past couple of days before opening that I had gone
- 8:25Speaker 5: out just more more white tail and I wasn't quite
- 8:31Speaker 5: sure if I was wanting to use my white tail
- 8:34Speaker 5: B tag for that hunt or you know, I didn't
- 8:37Speaker 5: know what I was going to see.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you had a dough tag, a white tail dose specific.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Tag, yeah, and your general tag, which is.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Good for either sex in that particular exactly.
- 8:50Speaker 7: Yep.
- 8:50Speaker 5: And I've still got mule deer from the other year,
- 8:53Speaker 5: so I was thinking about wanting some whitetail meat. I
- 8:56Speaker 5: just didn't know, you know what, I want to shoot
- 8:58Speaker 5: a white tail buck and it would be my first
- 9:00Speaker 5: or use my B tag. And there are a couple
- 9:05Speaker 5: of issues with with other hunters coming a little too
- 9:11Speaker 5: close to comfort for me. Someone who parked himself within
- 9:15Speaker 5: four hundred yards, so we were hunting the same the
- 9:18Speaker 5: same corner h and made some mistakes, like messed up
- 9:24Speaker 5: big time with my turrets, new new rifle this year,
- 9:28Speaker 5: new scope, new set up, so fast forward through all
- 9:33Speaker 5: all of the drama. But I had wounded my buck
- 9:37Speaker 5: and it was sitting on the public side, right up
- 9:40Speaker 5: against the fence with private land, and a couple of
- 9:47Speaker 5: other deer had hopped the fence to been more around
- 9:52Speaker 5: my injured buck, and you know, I was just kind
- 9:55Speaker 5: of waiting to see did my first and second shot
- 9:58Speaker 5: were they enough to uh kill him or not? But
- 10:03Speaker 5: then this other hunter popped out and started crawling toward
- 10:08Speaker 5: these other deer where my injured deer was, and uh it.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Was on the private side of the thing.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Yeah you did that hunter took a shot at one
- 10:18Speaker 5: of the deer there, and my deer jumped up and
- 10:21Speaker 5: popped over the fence, and uh, I was very emotional
- 10:27Speaker 5: and shaken and in hysterics, and I called you cal
- 10:32Speaker 5: and you were like, calm the fuck down, and and
- 10:35Speaker 5: do you well you were you were you were much
- 10:37Speaker 5: nicer than that, but but it's what I needed to hear.
- 10:41Speaker 5: You helped me out, made some phone calls, got in
- 10:43Speaker 5: touch with f w P, who got in touch with
- 10:48Speaker 5: the landowner. Uh, and who's gracious enough to give me
- 10:53Speaker 5: permission to access and fast forward you know, I mean,
- 10:59Speaker 5: killed deer, drug it back to state and.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Going through your head out, I just need to get
- 11:06Speaker 1: the deer. Oh yeah, you're so committed already that there
- 11:09Speaker 1: could have been more mistakes made.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Oh for sure I was. I was not in my
- 11:13Speaker 5: right mind. And you you heard most of most of that.
- 11:18Speaker 1: But yeah, called the game warden. Game warden says, give
- 11:22Speaker 1: me the details. Calls the landowner and in this case
- 11:27Speaker 1: the landowner or the agents of the landowner or uh,
- 11:32Speaker 1: super understanding, and they said great, thanks for calling.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Oh them so much.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Not only can you trustpass, but you can trustpass and
- 11:42Speaker 1: make a follow up shot if it's necessary. And you know,
- 11:47Speaker 1: it was coming up on dark and they didn't us
- 11:51Speaker 1: anything that part exactly.
- 11:52Speaker 5: It was coming up on dark. My phone was almost dead,
- 11:57Speaker 5: you know, all.
- 11:58Speaker 1: The modern tragedy. My phone only has seven percent battery live.
- 12:03Speaker 5: And then you and Sam came and help me drag
- 12:06Speaker 5: that deer out and uh, yeah, now it's hanging. So
- 12:09Speaker 5: that was my first Montana whitetail Buck.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Thank you, congrats.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Heck yeah, how are we doing on our first Yeah?
- 12:17Speaker 1: I see Jeff over there. We are going to jump
- 12:19Speaker 1: over to probably for Meat Eater Live, the first ever
- 12:24Speaker 1: stop at the Politics Desk with our guest Jeff Crane,
- 12:28Speaker 1: who is the President and CEO of the Congressional Sportsman's
- 12:32Speaker 1: Foundation CSF. Jeff, are you on the line?
- 12:36Speaker 6: Yes, sir?
- 12:37Speaker 7: Can you hear me?
- 12:38Speaker 1: Yes, sir? We got you loud and clear. How you doing.
- 12:41Speaker 6: I'm doing great.
- 12:42Speaker 7: I'm feeling a little old since I don't have my
- 12:44Speaker 7: costume on with the rest of you guys, but it's
- 12:46Speaker 7: been a long time since I put a Halloween costume on.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Well, as it was just explained to me Jeff, it's
- 12:53Speaker 1: not just for children. It brings joy, I think, is
- 12:56Speaker 1: what all Chinese food box set right.
- 13:02Speaker 6: UH.
- 13:02Speaker 1: The Congressional Sportsman's Foundation I'm familiar with, But will you
- 13:07Speaker 1: please just let folks know the CSF isn't as out
- 13:14Speaker 1: in front of I think like the general public as
- 13:17Speaker 1: a lot of other UH organizations are very very powerful
- 13:26Speaker 1: lobbying group on behalf of sportsman's interests in the United States.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Can can you give us a quick rundown on on
- 13:35Speaker 1: who and what CSF does.
- 13:37Speaker 7: Sure, and and thanks for having me on the show.
- 13:41Speaker 7: Tel And and I do kind of hate the fact
- 13:44Speaker 7: that we aren't a better known household word, but we've
- 13:48Speaker 7: been around for thirty five years. We do work exclusively
- 13:51Speaker 7: in the policy arena, where the where the tip of
- 13:55Speaker 7: the sphere for hunters, anglers, recreational shooters, traps. We work.
- 14:02Speaker 7: We are founded to work in Washington, d C. In
- 14:04Speaker 7: the United States, alongside the United States Congress. In the
- 14:08Speaker 7: last twenty years we've expanded to all fifty states, realizing
- 14:12Speaker 7: that a lot of the wildlife management decisions that affect
- 14:15Speaker 7: sportsmen and women actually get made at the state level,
- 14:19Speaker 7: so we are very immersed. I think one of the
- 14:22Speaker 7: big things that sets us apart is we have a
- 14:25Speaker 7: bipartisan approach so that we can work with both sides
- 14:29Speaker 7: of the aisle on the uncertainty in politics is the
- 14:31Speaker 7: pendulum swings and one party is not going to be
- 14:37Speaker 7: in power all the time, certainly in Washington. Some states
- 14:40Speaker 7: is a little bit different. But we want to be
- 14:42Speaker 7: able to make sure that the sports one and men
- 14:45Speaker 7: and women have a seat at the table, regardless of
- 14:48Speaker 7: who's in political.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Office, and very timely right we have impending election no
- 14:57Speaker 1: matter what, going to have a new administration. And recently
- 15:04Speaker 1: you spoke with our good buddy and fantastic writer Jordan
- 15:07Speaker 1: Sillers for an article I believe it is titled hunters
- 15:12Speaker 1: could decide the twenty twenty four presidential election and could
- 15:17Speaker 1: you just tell us how is that true? How do
- 15:23Speaker 1: hunters and anglers play into politics, especially right now?
- 15:29Speaker 7: So the absolute certainty of the truth is if you
- 15:31Speaker 7: don't vote, you're not engaging in your constitutional right to
- 15:37Speaker 7: decide who gets elected from the president right down to
- 15:40Speaker 7: your local elections. And so clearly every citizen in this
- 15:45Speaker 7: great country has that opportunity to impact the election. So
- 15:50Speaker 7: the Civics lesson is, please make sure that you are
- 15:54Speaker 7: exercising your rights. As more to the point of sportsmen
- 15:58Speaker 7: and women, you know, they're different sort of polling studies
- 16:04Speaker 7: and whatnot out there that suggest that that sportsmen and
- 16:07Speaker 7: women don't show up to the polls and numbers, you know,
- 16:10Speaker 7: as they should. So that begs the question, why are
- 16:13Speaker 7: you not going to the pole? Why are we not
- 16:15Speaker 7: allowing ourselves, with our passions for the great outdoors to
- 16:20Speaker 7: have our voices heard this is the way every citizen
- 16:23Speaker 7: in this country can do it. So our encouragement in
- 16:27Speaker 7: our campaign here at CSF is I hunt, I fish,
- 16:29Speaker 7: I vote, and we're trying to turn out the vote
- 16:33Speaker 7: because it makes our job a whole lot easier if
- 16:36Speaker 7: we have pro sportsmen and women elected officials or at
- 16:41Speaker 7: least people that can can relate to the fact that
- 16:44Speaker 7: we are legitimate conservationists and that what we do is
- 16:48Speaker 7: really beneficial for our landscapes. And so yeah, it's important,
- 16:53Speaker 7: you know, and if you're going to be in a
- 16:54Speaker 7: tree stand, or you're going to be in a duck line,
- 16:56Speaker 7: or you're going to be in an alpine meadow or somewhere,
- 16:59Speaker 7: I mean, there are all kinds of opportunities to vote early.
- 17:02Speaker 7: And you know, we're just trying to encourage the sportsman's
- 17:07Speaker 7: vote to get out, turnout, not telling you who to
- 17:10Speaker 7: vote for, but man, make your.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Boys be are well, said darn Right and Jeff.
- 17:16Speaker 1: One. One thing that I think may prohibit sportsmen and
- 17:20Speaker 1: women from showing up to the polls is, you know,
- 17:23Speaker 1: we get this rhetoric out there that says, well, yeah,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you can vote for your interests, but then you're voting
- 17:30Speaker 1: against these interests. Is it is that true? Do we
- 17:34Speaker 1: have to choose between hunting and angling rights and our
- 17:40Speaker 1: other rights or is it possible to lobby and have
- 17:45Speaker 1: it all?
- 17:47Speaker 7: You know, we just based on the people that that
- 17:50Speaker 7: we work with on a routine basis in the United
- 17:53Speaker 7: States Congress, I think it's possible.
- 17:55Speaker 6: To have it all.
- 17:55Speaker 7: And again, are there going to be occasions where that
- 18:00Speaker 7: creates a conflict?
- 18:01Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 18:02Speaker 7: Probably does, But a lot of times, you know, just
- 18:06Speaker 7: making sure that you're sending a little heeded, smart people
- 18:12Speaker 7: up to Washington and your state capitals and stuff, and
- 18:15Speaker 7: then at least we have a run and shot at
- 18:17Speaker 7: being able to explain to them about hunting and fishing
- 18:20Speaker 7: and how it impacts not only the environment, not only conservation,
- 18:25Speaker 7: but the economy. And now those those arguments can carry
- 18:28Speaker 7: the day. So it's not a perfect, definitely one hundred
- 18:33Speaker 7: percent cow that I could say, yeah, check the box,
- 18:36Speaker 7: But more times than not, I would say, yes, it does.
- 18:40Speaker 1: That's great, Jeff. And let's say we've already voted, the
- 18:44Speaker 1: election has already been had. Is our job over what
- 18:47Speaker 1: do we do?
- 18:49Speaker 7: Absolutely not? You know, that's where we ask you, you know,
- 18:52Speaker 7: stay engaged, stay informed, elected officials are still responsive to constituents.
- 18:59Speaker 7: You know, on you guys are in your states, You've
- 19:02Speaker 7: got your elected officials in your state. I live over
- 19:05Speaker 7: in Maryland and so have my elected officials. And if
- 19:09Speaker 7: you don't, if you don't have your voice heard even
- 19:12Speaker 7: after the elections, and they're going to ignore you. You know,
- 19:15Speaker 7: the old squeaky wheel gets the grease. And there again,
- 19:17Speaker 7: that's what we're completely set up to do. If you
- 19:20Speaker 7: don't want to do it yourself, reach through. We've got
- 19:23Speaker 7: our website as an interactive feature. To click on any
- 19:27Speaker 7: state in the United States. You can find out who
- 19:29Speaker 7: your state legislators are, who your federal legislators are, in
- 19:32Speaker 7: the Congressional Caucus, Sportsman's Caucus, and you know, we can
- 19:36Speaker 7: help you get engaged in this kind of stuff or
- 19:39Speaker 7: you can you know, invite you to attend some things
- 19:41Speaker 7: in your own states. So no, absolutely, this is not
- 19:44Speaker 7: a once every two year, every four year saying please
- 19:47Speaker 7: please don't do that.
- 19:49Speaker 1: That's fantastic, Jevin. And so how do our very engaged
- 19:55Speaker 1: listeners and viewers find you How do they learn more
- 20:00Speaker 1: about Congressional Sportsman's Foundation.
- 20:02Speaker 7: It's a little long, but it's just ww dot Congressional
- 20:06Speaker 7: Sportsman dot org and if you put Congressional Sportsmen on
- 20:09Speaker 7: a search engine, you'll probably find us. And again there's
- 20:12Speaker 7: an interactive map. We've got staff from coast to coast
- 20:17Speaker 7: and north the south that work the various states. And
- 20:19Speaker 7: you know, if you want to find out what's going
- 20:21Speaker 7: on in your states, so it's a great resource. You
- 20:24Speaker 7: want to find out who those elective officials are that
- 20:27Speaker 7: are in the various caucuses, sportsmen's caucuses, whether it's here
- 20:31Speaker 7: in the US Congress or in your state legislature. Again,
- 20:34Speaker 7: great resource to find out about it. But the processes
- 20:38Speaker 7: is interactive all the time, and you know, so I
- 20:42Speaker 7: would definitely encourage you to go beyond next Tuesday that
- 20:46Speaker 7: that is not the end all and be all, and
- 20:50Speaker 7: we have to stay engaged. And I will point out
- 20:52Speaker 7: one other thing that I mentioned in the article. You know,
- 20:55Speaker 7: it's a good thing that the candidates think it's important
- 20:59Speaker 7: to create sportsmen and women for Canada at X, Y,
- 21:02Speaker 7: and Z. The worst thing you can be in the
- 21:05Speaker 7: political arena is irrelevant. And so the more numbers we
- 21:10Speaker 7: could show that sportsmen and women come to the polls,
- 21:14Speaker 7: the more numbers and more times that they show up
- 21:16Speaker 7: in the state capitals or in Congress talking about stuff,
- 21:20Speaker 7: generating the letters, things like that. We have to make
- 21:23Speaker 7: sure that we're punching way above our weight class. And
- 21:27Speaker 7: again that's that's what CSF is here to do.
- 21:31Speaker 1: The heck, yeah, well we'll work with you on that
- 21:33Speaker 1: any day of the week. Jeff, thank you so much
- 21:36Speaker 1: for coming on the show. You're welcome to stick with us.
- 21:39Speaker 1: We're going to have a very spooky migration report.
- 21:44Speaker 7: Good thanks for having me. Greatly appreciate it.
- 21:48Speaker 1: All right, gang, what do we think of that team?
- 21:51Speaker 2: Very informative, every Yeah, it's obviously top of mind to
- 21:55Speaker 2: everybody at the moment. Can't shake it. Even in the woods.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I was somehow getting text and information about the exact
- 22:01Speaker 2: upcoming election.
- 22:02Speaker 4: So go out and.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Vote exactly, buckle up. It's kickoff and then we got
- 22:09Speaker 1: long four quarters after that, so it's gonna be a
- 22:11Speaker 1: roller coaster, yes sir. All right, now over to the
- 22:17Speaker 1: migration report.
- 22:18Speaker 2: When you can sun food and the teram SAPs.
- 22:23Speaker 8: Then you suffers is the West?
- 22:30Speaker 5: Oh well, I love it.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Oh you're just waiting for the video now.
- 22:39Speaker 1: It says pre recorded migration report.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Oh, but we need to say.
- 22:44Speaker 1: The migration report is more Matt McCormick.
- 22:46Speaker 4: It gives a waterfowl hunting forecast for each flyway. Take
- 22:49Speaker 4: it away, Matt, I.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Think you guys.
- 22:51Speaker 9: I'm out McCormick with flying v and welcome to the
- 22:54Speaker 9: Meat Eater Migration Report for October thirty first, twenty twenty four.
- 22:58Speaker 9: I'm coming to you live from the ki Refuge here
- 23:01Speaker 9: in southwest Montana to bring you the latest on migration trends,
- 23:05Speaker 9: weather patterns, and what we can all expect to see
- 23:08Speaker 9: in the coming weeks as we move into November. First up,
- 23:11Speaker 9: we all have a new moon coming and that is
- 23:13Speaker 9: a good thing for all of us. We can all
- 23:16Speaker 9: expect to see more daylight action and when combined with
- 23:20Speaker 9: the forecasted north winds and cooler tempts, this is a
- 23:24Speaker 9: recipe for some of the best hunts of the season.
- 23:28Speaker 9: Everybody who's ever hunted in a north wind on a
- 23:30Speaker 9: cold front with a new moon can attest this recipe
- 23:36Speaker 9: is about as good as it gets, and in.
- 23:38Speaker 2: October it is very welcome.
- 23:40Speaker 9: So hunters across the country can expect to see some
- 23:43Speaker 9: better hunting ahead. Here in the packfly we've been you know,
- 23:47Speaker 9: we've already had our first push and our weather has
- 23:49Speaker 9: been okay. It's been about you know, forty to fifty degrees,
- 23:52Speaker 9: a lot of sound, a lot of no wind. But
- 23:55Speaker 9: we have had a first first push, and we have
- 23:59Speaker 9: two cold fronts coming back to back down the pipe.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Right now.
- 24:03Speaker 9: They are forecasting that we're gonna have below average temperatures
- 24:06Speaker 9: with which I can feel it right now in my hands.
- 24:09Speaker 9: It's on its way, as well as heavy, heavy snowfall.
- 24:14Speaker 9: If this happens, we can all expect to see birds
- 24:19Speaker 9: pour out of Alberta and move into the staging areas
- 24:21Speaker 9: in the US. I think we got some really good
- 24:23Speaker 9: hunting ahead in the Pacific Flyway. Over in the Central Flyway,
- 24:26Speaker 9: you guys are gonna benefit from these cold fronts as well.
- 24:29Speaker 9: These fronts are gonna push specs, pintails, and this first
- 24:35Speaker 9: wave of Canada geese down through South Dakota into Kansas, Oklahoma.
- 24:40Speaker 9: I think you guys are gonna start to see new
- 24:41Speaker 9: birds showing up here within the next week or so.
- 24:44Speaker 9: It's looking really really good for you guys as well.
- 24:47Speaker 9: Big migration days coming. You guys have had some great ones,
- 24:49Speaker 9: You're about to have some more in the Mississippi Flyway.
- 24:52Speaker 9: They've had some unseasonably warm weather, so it slowed things
- 24:56Speaker 9: down a little bit in the north, but the reports
- 24:58Speaker 9: are saying that there's still some great teal hunting. The
- 25:02Speaker 9: diver hunting has been really good over in Wisconsin Minnesota,
- 25:06Speaker 9: and the goose hunting has been pretty good as well.
- 25:08Speaker 9: But everybody could use a few more birds, and I
- 25:11Speaker 9: think you guys are going to see that as these
- 25:13Speaker 9: birds pushed down out of Manitoba down in through the
- 25:17Speaker 9: Mississippi Flyway. I think everybody in Illinois, Missouri as we
- 25:21Speaker 9: get through the weekend, you guys are going to start
- 25:23Speaker 9: seeing a trickle of birds coming in as well. Finally,
- 25:26Speaker 9: in the Atlantic Flyway, you know, movement's been a slow uptick.
- 25:30Speaker 9: You guys have had pretty good, pretty good hunting over
- 25:33Speaker 9: the last few weeks, but we are getting reports of
- 25:37Speaker 9: new black ducks showing up in the Saint Lawrence region,
- 25:40Speaker 9: which is a good sign. It means the birds are
- 25:42Speaker 9: on their way. The rain that you guys have gotten,
- 25:45Speaker 9: the cooler temperature should have improved the hunting on the
- 25:48Speaker 9: coast as well. I think everybody in the New England
- 25:51Speaker 9: and mid Atlantic regions are going to start to experience
- 25:55Speaker 9: some really good hunting in these first few weeks of November,
- 25:59Speaker 9: as the cooler tempts come in and the ducks start
- 26:01Speaker 9: pushing in as well. That's it for this week's migration report.
- 26:05Speaker 9: Whether you're battling the elements out west or you're just
- 26:08Speaker 9: waiting on new birds in the Central Mississippi Flyway, the
- 26:12Speaker 9: coming cooler temps and these cold fronts show really promising
- 26:16Speaker 9: good hunting to be had here in the next few weeks.
- 26:19Speaker 9: Happy Halloween everybody, and good luck out there. Back to you, Spencer.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Yeah, dang, Matt McCormick's crash.
- 26:27Speaker 2: That'll get you excited about some ducks.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yeah. I even learned that it's it's the hipway saying
- 26:36Speaker 1: Pacific Flyway is Packfly, pack Fly Yeah wow, yeah somebody.
- 26:40Speaker 1: That's a free brand name for somebody out there. Yeah,
- 26:44Speaker 1: we're gonna take a quick break, not from what you're watching,
- 26:48Speaker 1: but you keep watching because Phil's gonna give us some
- 26:50Speaker 1: listener feedback on the fly, so to speak.
- 26:54Speaker 4: Phil. Hey, I'm trying to make adjustments to my mask
- 26:58Speaker 4: so it still looks cool, but I can see what
- 26:59Speaker 4: I'm doing.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Oh, oh, it looks great.
- 27:02Speaker 4: That's great.
- 27:03Speaker 2: You can't see through those glowing red eyeballs.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Apparently not. I also I felt like today would be
- 27:07Speaker 4: a good idea to try this effect that I have
- 27:09Speaker 4: on my board so I can hello. I don't know
- 27:14Speaker 4: if this echo is coming through on the stream, but
- 27:16Speaker 4: I hope it is or else that doesn't sound really lame,
- 27:18Speaker 4: I'm gonna turn it off on.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Wow, that's pretty great.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Okay, that was fun, Right.
- 27:23Speaker 5: The whole show like that?
- 27:24Speaker 4: Okay, I don't think so. I think it'd be really annoying. Uh,
- 27:27Speaker 4: let's see. Mogres asking Krinn, how far in advance do
- 27:30Speaker 4: you record the podcast before uploading them, said he was
- 27:33Speaker 4: listening to the new Trivia today and someone mentioned the
- 27:36Speaker 4: Monday morning mood, which made me wonder, thank you.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Hmmm.
- 27:40Speaker 5: It kind of depends. Sometimes we might record the week
- 27:44Speaker 5: before we drop an episode of the Meat Eater podcast.
- 27:47Speaker 5: I assume he's asking about that, and sometimes Trivia might
- 27:52Speaker 5: be the week before, and sometimes, just based on everyone's schedules,
- 27:56Speaker 5: we might be a couple weeks out. So it really
- 27:59Speaker 5: just depends week to week.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I'd say it's very reliant on Steven Ronella's schedule.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Yeah, indeed, that's.
- 28:07Speaker 4: The main thing I'm getting word that the echo did
- 28:09Speaker 4: not come through soused out. You know, I'm going to
- 28:13Speaker 4: try to workshop that during the next interview about that
- 28:16Speaker 4: fruit of the mycilium that's a great name. Asks how
- 28:20Speaker 4: much meat do I share with my hunting buddy. We
- 28:22Speaker 4: hunted a new state all of October and I finally
- 28:24Speaker 4: shot a blacktail. We packed it out and butchered it together.
- 28:27Speaker 4: He was a huge help.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Great question.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean great, great question. I personally I would
- 28:34Speaker 1: offer them half. Yeah, yeah, I mean blacktail are small,
- 28:38Speaker 1: I get it. I would I would offer half.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd say at least a shoulder a ham since
- 28:46Speaker 2: they packed out half of it. I mean, yeah, at
- 28:48Speaker 2: the minimum, the whole ham.
- 28:50Speaker 5: Yeah, that's probably about right.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Don't don't go cherry pick on your your soft cuts
- 28:56Speaker 1: and then then you're not going to have anybody to
- 28:58Speaker 1: help pack something out.
- 29:00Speaker 2: And then try and help your buddy get him a deer.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and blacktail are small. Like if if that's the
- 29:05Speaker 1: way you want to play it next year, go hunt
- 29:07Speaker 1: by yourself.
- 29:08Speaker 5: Oh wait, so you and Sam helped me with my dear.
- 29:12Speaker 5: So should I be giving you guys half or should
- 29:17Speaker 5: I split between the two of you? Or should I
- 29:20Speaker 5: be giving you should should we split it three ways?
- 29:24Speaker 1: I just want to stop you right there. Okay, she's
- 29:27Speaker 1: trying to walk back a previous statement that she made.
- 29:30Speaker 4: We know she was a.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Little bit hysterical. She offered fifteen dinners at one of
- 29:35Speaker 1: the most expensive places in Bozeman, and now she's like,
- 29:40Speaker 1: oh wait.
- 29:41Speaker 5: No, that's worth more than half the deer. So no, no,
- 29:44Speaker 5: well we're going to stick to that cow. This is
- 29:45Speaker 5: an addition. So that generous heart, that one walking anything back.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Just saved us from you know, going home and cooking
- 29:54Speaker 1: dinner and relaxing and sitting in front.
- 29:56Speaker 4: Of the boob tube.
- 29:57Speaker 2: So I would have been boring.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Yep, yep. Jeremy asks, can you recommend an area for
- 30:03Speaker 4: an international hunter to come and do a US hunt?
- 30:06Speaker 4: Tips your ideas on best area, target species, etc. He's
- 30:09Speaker 4: looking three to five years in advance, which is very wow,
- 30:12Speaker 4: very responsible.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Well, good job looking ahead. That's sometimes how long it
- 30:16Speaker 2: takes to draw tags in Western States.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Corey, I think you'd be a good
- 30:23Speaker 1: one to answer this, but I mean it's if you're
- 30:25Speaker 1: looking three to five years in advance, get on it now.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I'd apply in New Mexico, Montana, Idaho, Colorado.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Hmm, if you can, yep, that's a good point. Yeah,
- 30:37Speaker 2: big game out west or even white tail in the
- 30:39Speaker 2: Midwest be a lot easier. You could probably I would
- 30:43Speaker 2: imagine you'd want to come out for maybe a week,
- 30:47Speaker 2: two weeks a month, so you could probably hunt a
- 30:50Speaker 2: few states doing that if you play your cards right.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Yeah, but there's no ban on international folks hunting anywhere
- 30:58Speaker 1: in the US, so you're just seen as like a
- 31:02Speaker 1: non resident hunter, so that I mean that that's side
- 31:06Speaker 1: of it's pretty easy. If that's a worry for you.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Yeah, Star start accumulating it lading some points.
- 31:12Speaker 4: Tyler wants to shout out his eleven year old Jayden
- 31:14Speaker 4: on her first deer and buck this past weekend during
- 31:17Speaker 4: the youth hunt, and East Tennessee tagged a nice seven point.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Congrats Tyler and Jayden. Any good youth hunting stories from
- 31:24Speaker 4: the group. I know this is because because Corey, you
- 31:28Speaker 4: have a six year old, so he's not doing any hunting. No, man,
- 31:31Speaker 4: you don't have kids. Cal you also don't have kids,
- 31:33Speaker 4: but you've been on some youth hunts, right, Oh.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I've taken a lot of youth hunters over the years. Yeah,
- 31:37Speaker 1: I mean, my biggest story is the fact that you
- 31:42Speaker 1: have to see things from their level, right, So even
- 31:46Speaker 1: things as big as an elk. I'm like, yepre there.
- 31:48Speaker 1: He is right there, just stuffed out, and they're like,
- 31:51Speaker 1: I can't see him. And you're like, how in the
- 31:53Speaker 1: heck can you not see that giant six point bowl?
- 31:57Speaker 1: And then you drop to your knees and you get
- 31:59Speaker 1: on the level of an eleven year old and you're like, ah,
- 32:03Speaker 1: there is no way you can see the elk from here,
- 32:06Speaker 1: short human.
- 32:07Speaker 2: I took my six year old turkey hunting with me
- 32:09Speaker 2: this year. It was the best, most memorable hunt I'll
- 32:12Speaker 2: ever had. We'd put some great stocks on some birds
- 32:14Speaker 2: and then ultimately ended up getting one. On the way out,
- 32:17Speaker 2: he was still strapped in his car seat. I said, buddy,
- 32:19Speaker 2: you stay here, dad, he's gonna go round the hill.
- 32:22Speaker 2: And he stuck his head out the window and he
- 32:23Speaker 2: could hear the shotgun go off, So he was there, yeah,
- 32:27Speaker 2: but still in the truck.
- 32:28Speaker 4: It was.
- 32:29Speaker 2: It was perfect. It was a lot of fun. I
- 32:30Speaker 2: can't wait to do it again.
- 32:32Speaker 4: I probably know the answer to this because I edit
- 32:35Speaker 4: every one of your podcasts. But cal the Snort prefer
- 32:37Speaker 4: upland or waterfowl hunting. That's from Noah boy she loves.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I think peasants are very high on her list because they,
- 32:51Speaker 1: especially late season, they run a lot, they represent a
- 32:54Speaker 1: really serious challenge. I stick with upland hunting as long
- 32:58Speaker 1: as possible, just for that exercise. And but I mean
- 33:02Speaker 1: these retrievers, man, they come alive if you give them
- 33:06Speaker 1: a chance to just do straight retrieving. And I think
- 33:11Speaker 1: that she likes retrieving geese more than more than ducks.
- 33:15Speaker 1: There's something about a big bird hit in the ground
- 33:18Speaker 1: that she becomes a kind of a jerk to hunt with.
- 33:22Speaker 1: She needs more reprimanding when geese are flying than when
- 33:26Speaker 1: ducks are flying. And follow up Matt's asking, how is
- 33:29Speaker 1: Snort recovering? And for those who don't know what happened
- 33:32Speaker 1: with Snort?
- 33:34Speaker 4: Here, Oh yeah, here we go, Hey, s come here, come.
- 33:43Speaker 5: For all of you listeners, Snort is sitting on cow's
- 33:46Speaker 5: lap right now.
- 33:47Speaker 1: So she's got a little zipper on her chest here,
- 33:52Speaker 1: and she's recovered quite well. But she's about a third
- 33:56Speaker 1: sealed up and she I'm thinking about a week and
- 34:02Speaker 1: the rest of the zipp around her chest here will
- 34:05Speaker 1: be uh yeah, I don't know. Yeah, it's gonna be
- 34:10Speaker 1: real hard to see, but a lot of staples there,
- 34:12Speaker 1: and she's gonna be back to chasing the cocks around.
- 34:17Speaker 5: That was a slice on barbed wire, doesn't hunting.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Barbed wire cut? And Karen was actually right there. Yeah,
- 34:24Speaker 1: and it's you know, these dogs move so fast and
- 34:27Speaker 1: they're so strong that it does not take much. So
- 34:32Speaker 1: she's an excellent patient these days.
- 34:34Speaker 7: Girl.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Yeah, she's been through a lot in your short time.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Snake bite fences.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yep, hosting a podcast.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I just.
- 34:42Speaker 5: Got to put the headphones on her.
- 34:45Speaker 4: She can do anything. It is about that time of day,
- 34:48Speaker 4: all right, really quick, I think I fixed my effect. Guys,
- 34:50Speaker 4: let me know if you can hear this. Hello, this
- 34:55Speaker 4: is Halloween. I really hope that works. Please tell me
- 35:02Speaker 4: that worked. Okay, I think you're ready to move on
- 35:04Speaker 4: to segment.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Actually, Snort's gonna help me introduce our next guest because
- 35:11Speaker 1: she knows, Bob, we've done some bird walking. Or no,
- 35:16Speaker 1: that's not true, never mind, get out of here. Snort
- 35:19Speaker 1: a son of a gun. Next up, giving us a
- 35:25Speaker 1: bird report and so much more from a fantastic habitat
- 35:30Speaker 1: conservation group Pheasants and Quail Forever. Bob Saint Pierre, who
- 35:36Speaker 1: is the chief marketing and Communications officer, son of a.
- 35:40Speaker 5: Gun, Happy Halloween, Bob in the spirit Wow. For all
- 35:47Speaker 5: you listeners out there, Oh oh, there you go. There's
- 35:50Speaker 5: the human face.
- 35:54Speaker 4: I love it. He's putting his headphones on now he's
- 35:57Speaker 4: getting ready. It was for those for those listening to
- 35:59Speaker 4: the podcasts, and Bob had like some sort of college
- 36:02Speaker 4: mascot that looked like the Red Robin mascot as well.
- 36:05Speaker 4: I don't know it.
- 36:07Speaker 6: Come on, guys, that was Rudy the Rooster.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Rudy, that was my guest.
- 36:12Speaker 10: Yeah, but but you're not too far off my My
- 36:15Speaker 10: pre Pheasants Forever job was in minor league baseball, so
- 36:19Speaker 10: I've borne all sorts of.
- 36:22Speaker 7: Mascot co students.
- 36:24Speaker 10: Lucky the lepre Con is one that sticks out.
- 36:29Speaker 1: It goes good with that, oh Red, turning to Gray
- 36:32Speaker 1: a go tea that you have there, Bob, thanks.
- 36:36Speaker 6: For noticing cal.
- 36:40Speaker 10: With that tire where thanks for wearing the Pheasant Yeah.
- 36:45Speaker 1: For folks who have never been to Pheasant Fast, which
- 36:48Speaker 1: it is coming up here in the in the new year. Uh,
- 36:52Speaker 1: it's a great way to get together with a bunch
- 36:55Speaker 1: of upland bird hunters and get really educated on all
- 37:01Speaker 1: conservation things, the farm, build noxious weeds, habitat improvement, all
- 37:06Speaker 1: sorts of different programs like the path program here, which
- 37:10Speaker 1: is a Pheasants and Quail Forever brainchild. Another private land,
- 37:15Speaker 1: public access avenue out there for folks and critical organization
- 37:23Speaker 1: out there. If you're not a member, you should be
- 37:26Speaker 1: Pheasants in Quail Forever. Bob, have you been listening in
- 37:30Speaker 1: on the whole show, the.
- 37:32Speaker 10: Majority of it, some with the mask on, some with
- 37:35Speaker 10: it off, but I've listened to the majority.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Okay, Well, you know you had Jeff cranon from.
- 37:42Speaker 6: The Congressional Sportsman, Thank.
- 37:45Speaker 1: You CSF, and Jeff was talking about how they're a
- 37:48Speaker 1: bipartisan organization and they work across the board with all
- 37:55Speaker 1: political affiliations, and I know Pheasants Quail Forever does too.
- 38:00Speaker 1: And you guys got some heat on that one recently
- 38:02Speaker 1: because you always Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. They host
- 38:08Speaker 1: a bunch of different Governor's hunts all around the state
- 38:11Speaker 1: or help participate in set up as the conservation partner,
- 38:16Speaker 1: and this year the spotlight was on you a little
- 38:19Speaker 1: bit more than usual.
- 38:21Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, we did take a little vitriol on social
- 38:25Speaker 10: media around the Minnesota Governor's Hunt Governor's pheasant Hunt. But
- 38:31Speaker 10: in fairness, I mean, we participated in the Minnesota Governor's
- 38:36Speaker 10: feesant Hunt since it was created in twenty eleven, regardless
- 38:40Speaker 10: of what party holds the office of governor. And that's
- 38:44Speaker 10: true of South Dakota, which we just participated in last weekend,
- 38:49Speaker 10: coming up in Iowa and coming up in Kansas. We've
- 38:52Speaker 10: got four states. Two were held by Republican governors, two
- 38:56Speaker 10: are held by Democratic governors, and we participate in all
- 39:00Speaker 10: of them, particularly our local volunteers. And Jeff, Jeff was
- 39:05Speaker 10: talking about having a seat at the table and being relevant,
- 39:08Speaker 10: and I'd echo that, you know, we're we we want
- 39:12Speaker 10: to be at the table. Otherwise, you know the phrase,
- 39:14Speaker 10: if you're not at the table, you're on the menu.
- 39:17Speaker 10: And we need to be at those I mean, it's
- 39:20Speaker 10: it's a governor's pheasant hunt for a sitting governor, for
- 39:24Speaker 10: an opportunity for us to talk about habitat and conservation.
- 39:28Speaker 10: So yeah, we uh, we participate them in them whenever
- 39:31Speaker 10: we get a chance.
- 39:33Speaker 1: And uh, well, tim Walls there. He didn't get any
- 39:36Speaker 1: cocks on opening day. Are the numbers down in Minnesota?
- 39:40Speaker 11: Uh?
- 39:40Speaker 3: Yeah, the things are down a little bit.
- 39:42Speaker 10: This year in Minnesota, we we had almost a non
- 39:47Speaker 10: existent winter, which set us up to have, you know,
- 39:51Speaker 10: a hockey stick level. There's my Minnesota reference hockey stick
- 39:56Speaker 10: level increase.
- 39:57Speaker 6: I had bird numbers because.
- 39:58Speaker 10: The winter was so mild, and we had a tremendous
- 40:02Speaker 10: adult carryover. Hens came into spring nesting season really strong.
- 40:07Speaker 10: Unfortunately early June at the time that's the peak of
- 40:11Speaker 10: the hatch. We got super heavy rains across southern Minnesota
- 40:16Speaker 10: and northern Iowa, parts of eastern South Dakota. And those rains,
- 40:22Speaker 10: what we think happened is they gully washed out nests
- 40:26Speaker 10: and a pheasants you know, you'll you'll sometimes here pheasants
- 40:31Speaker 10: pulled off a second hatch. Well that's not true. Pheasants
- 40:36Speaker 10: will renest if they lose a nest. You know, say
- 40:39Speaker 10: that a gully washes out a nest, or a raccoon
- 40:43Speaker 10: comes by and eats a nest, so a hand will
- 40:45Speaker 10: lay a new nest as long as none of them
- 40:49Speaker 10: none of those eggs have hatched. But on an average
- 40:52Speaker 10: first nest attempt, they start eleven to thirteen eggs. As
- 40:56Speaker 10: they go down for a second attempt, the egg numbers
- 41:01Speaker 10: go down, so they may lay seven to nine eggs.
- 41:04Speaker 10: A third attempt, they'll try again, maybe it'll be an
- 41:07Speaker 10: average of five eggs. So as long as the eggs
- 41:10Speaker 10: aren't hatched or hatched in a chick happens, they will
- 41:15Speaker 10: attempt to renest. But there's no such thing in pheasant
- 41:18Speaker 10: biology as a second nest. So long winded answer that
- 41:24Speaker 10: rain and June couldn't have come at a worst time
- 41:27Speaker 10: probably led to a lot more renest attempts, So the
- 41:31Speaker 10: reproduction numbers of new birds coming into the population ultimately
- 41:36Speaker 10: in parts of Minnesota, Iowa, parts of South Dakota are
- 41:40Speaker 10: down a little bit, but generally speaking, North Dakota South
- 41:44Speaker 10: Dakota are actually pretty strong numbers. Nebraska is on an
- 41:49Speaker 10: uprise and then Kansas is slow uprise. They've been suffering
- 41:55Speaker 10: drought for a number of years, so they're little upticking cares,
- 42:00Speaker 10: but it's a little bit slower than st North Dakota
- 42:02Speaker 10: and South Dakota awesome.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And then what about are quail hunters, what can they
- 42:07Speaker 1: expect this year or any any good reports.
- 42:10Speaker 10: Yeah, mixed bag, depending on what species and what states
- 42:14Speaker 10: we're talking about.
- 42:16Speaker 6: I'll point to Arizona. You know, you got three species
- 42:19Speaker 6: of quail.
- 42:19Speaker 10: In Arizona, the manazuma or merns quail that live in
- 42:23Speaker 10: the Sky Islands. Rains look to have come at the
- 42:26Speaker 10: right time for those birds, so that should be good.
- 42:29Speaker 10: Same thing with the desert birds. Gambles and scalies look
- 42:33Speaker 10: pretty good in Arizona. If you're you've never taken a
- 42:36Speaker 10: spring break to the desert, this might be your year.
- 42:41Speaker 6: Texas.
- 42:41Speaker 10: Things around the ariz In Texas, it's it's not going
- 42:44Speaker 10: to be like twenty fourteen when you know, Texas quail
- 42:51Speaker 10: hunters were flushing, you know, thirty covees a day. But
- 42:55Speaker 10: things around the improve in Texas, and then Nebraska mirrors.
- 42:59Speaker 10: Pheasant significantly better in Nebraska, Kansas a little bit brighter
- 43:04Speaker 10: in Kansas. Uh, same thing in Oklahoma, a little bit
- 43:07Speaker 10: better for bob whites than it has in the past.
- 43:09Speaker 10: And then the Southeast, those Hurricanans. You know, it makes
- 43:15Speaker 10: things a little bit challenging for both the birds and
- 43:17Speaker 10: the hunters. Not you know, it doesn't wipe out quail numbers,
- 43:22Speaker 10: but it's definitely going to put a little bit of
- 43:25Speaker 10: a challenge for bird numbers and for hunting.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe even just displaces populations if they were able
- 43:31Speaker 1: to move a little bit there.
- 43:33Speaker 10: So yeah, yeah, and obviously the human loss is paramount,
- 43:39Speaker 10: so well. Wishes to everybody in the southeast.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Yeah, darn darn right, Bob, What what are you looking
- 43:46Speaker 1: forward to next?
- 43:48Speaker 7: I'm going north.
- 43:50Speaker 10: I'm going to rough grouse in woodcock hunting this weekend.
- 43:55Speaker 10: Woodcock had been slow to arrive in the migrations and
- 44:00Speaker 10: just so darn warm. I've had to pivot a bunch
- 44:03Speaker 10: of prairie grouse trips to the north Woods because it's
- 44:06Speaker 10: been nineties and upper eighties across much of the you know,
- 44:10Speaker 10: South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana prairie is when I had
- 44:13Speaker 10: tended to be chasing sharpie's, so but I haven't been
- 44:16Speaker 10: finding woodcock. I think, you know, we're getting some snow
- 44:21Speaker 10: today in Minnesota, which is the first. I don't think
- 44:24Speaker 10: it's gonna be the Halloween snowstorm of nineteen ninety one,
- 44:29Speaker 10: but we're getting a little bit of snow in Minnesota,
- 44:31Speaker 10: So I think some woodcock are gonna come down and
- 44:34Speaker 10: the leaves are largely off the trees now, so you
- 44:37Speaker 10: get a little bit better opportunity at rough grouse, and
- 44:41Speaker 10: it's our last shot before deer hunters take to the woods.
- 44:44Speaker 10: So I think I'm gonna go north and chase grouse
- 44:47Speaker 10: and woodcock this weekend.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Heck yeah, Bob, Well, I know old Clay Nukeomb and
- 44:52Speaker 1: myself we're gonna be seeing you at minimum from the
- 44:55Speaker 1: meat eater crew down at Pheasant Fast Quail Fast this
- 45:00Speaker 1: year or coming up next year this year March, yeah, yeah,
- 45:05Speaker 1: And there's another concert for conservation being held to right,
- 45:10Speaker 1: yeah right.
- 45:10Speaker 10: A shout out to our buddy Dave Simonette and Trampled
- 45:14Speaker 10: by Turtles.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Yeah day.
- 45:19Speaker 10: He and they Trample took a leap of faith with us,
- 45:22Speaker 10: gave us the friends and family discount because they believe
- 45:25Speaker 10: in our organization and conservation, and jumped in on this
- 45:31Speaker 10: crazy idea to do our first ever concert for conservation
- 45:34Speaker 10: in Sioux Falls last year, and it was a tremendous success.
- 45:38Speaker 10: We raised one hundred thousand dollars for our Habitat mission
- 45:41Speaker 10: thanks to Trampled and a band that's played with Trampled
- 45:46Speaker 10: is jumping in and joining us in Kansas City. Muscadine
- 45:50Speaker 10: Bloodline tickets are on sale. They just got done opening
- 45:54Speaker 10: for post Malone across October and November, and they are
- 45:58Speaker 10: gonna headline our show at the Uptown Theater in Kansas
- 46:02Speaker 10: City on Thursday night, March gosh, I think it's March fifth,
- 46:08Speaker 10: leading into uh March sixth, Thursday night, March sixth, leading
- 46:13Speaker 10: into a national phasant fest in Classic.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Heck yeah, well, we'll see you there, Bob. Thanks a
- 46:19Speaker 1: bunch for coming on.
- 46:22Speaker 6: If you're thanks for the opportunity.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Rooster, rooster, darn right, be safe out there where your orange.
- 46:29Speaker 1: And well, we'll hopefully get Snort together with old get
- 46:34Speaker 1: you there and we'll do some pointing and retrieving. She
- 46:37Speaker 1: can do the point.
- 46:40Speaker 10: A young pop joining the pack too, So we got
- 46:44Speaker 10: Winter is going to experience at first snowstorm today, So
- 46:47Speaker 10: we got a five month old pop, Get you is
- 46:50Speaker 10: five years old, and then got Eski at ten years old.
- 46:53Speaker 6: So I've got a full household.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Yeah heck yeah, Well thanks for joining us, Bob.
- 46:58Speaker 5: Thanks Bob. I'm just going to interrupt for one second.
- 47:03Speaker 5: We mentioned some of the areas affected by the hurricane
- 47:07Speaker 5: and meat eater in partnership with on X. We just
- 47:12Speaker 5: got together and we actually have a fundraiser to support
- 47:17Speaker 5: hurricane relief with the Red Cross. It's a pretty long link,
- 47:21Speaker 5: so I won't read it out, but if you're on
- 47:23Speaker 5: the meat Eater website and you're under the conservation tab,
- 47:27Speaker 5: you can find it. And if you also google Red
- 47:30Speaker 5: Cross with meat Eater and Onyx, you'll see, you know,
- 47:34Speaker 5: you'll land on a page at the Red Cross that
- 47:37Speaker 5: brings you to the Onyx and Meat Eater support for
- 47:41Speaker 5: hurricane relief efforts. So feel free to donate to that
- 47:44Speaker 5: if you're moved to do so.
- 47:47Speaker 4: Love that.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Darn right, we all know somebody down that neck of
- 47:50Speaker 1: the woods. We can always lean in a little bit
- 47:53Speaker 1: more and help out. Speaking of learning, we're at jetiquette,
- 48:00Speaker 1: darn right, we are, Phil. This is another pre recorded segment.
- 48:06Speaker 1: Are you ready?
- 48:06Speaker 4: Oh? I am?
- 48:07Speaker 1: But first, c.
- 48:09Speaker 3: T t Q E t T E find out bud
- 48:11Speaker 3: means to me. C G t Q you t T take.
- 48:15Speaker 4: Care of.
- 48:20Speaker 1: You dancing. That's amazing this week.
- 48:24Speaker 12: Hello everybody, Mine Floyd and I'm coming at.
- 48:28Speaker 1: You from Wisconsin.
- 48:29Speaker 12: It's a beautiful night and I'm sitting by another beautiful
- 48:32Speaker 12: campfire and this week's Chettikit question comes to us from
- 48:37Speaker 12: somebody who does not want to be named. He writes,
- 48:41Speaker 12: I have a good friend with two young boys who
- 48:43Speaker 12: recently passed hunter's Education. The younger one, aged nine, is
- 48:49Speaker 12: eager to hunt turkeys and his mom, my friend is
- 48:52Speaker 12: interested too, though she is unsure if she wants to
- 48:57Speaker 12: pull the trigger herself. I offered to take them turkey hunting.
- 49:01Speaker 12: We practiced with my four to ten and went over
- 49:04Speaker 12: safety the day before the hunt. We tried to get
- 49:07Speaker 12: the boy's license, but his dad, her ex husband, refused
- 49:12Speaker 12: to share his hunter's education infoma. He said, since he
- 49:18Speaker 12: put them through the hunter's education course, he wanted to
- 49:21Speaker 12: be the one to take him turkey hunting first. The
- 49:24Speaker 12: problem is he doesn't turkey hunt and the season had
- 49:28Speaker 12: been open for a month. He also said their mom
- 49:31Speaker 12: shouldn't be involved in hunting because she doesn't hunt herself,
- 49:35Speaker 12: and no one but him should hunt with the boys.
- 49:38Speaker 12: What do you think about this situation. I think it's
- 49:42Speaker 12: a very tricky situation, is my first thought. I think
- 49:47Speaker 12: this ultimately comes down to this is easy for me
- 49:50Speaker 12: the kids. You have to think about the kids, and
- 49:53Speaker 12: you have to get them out hunting. I understand why
- 49:56Speaker 12: the ex husband wants to take his boys out first,
- 50:00Speaker 12: but ultimately he has to do it. So you guys
- 50:04Speaker 12: need to figure that out as parents. Talk to the dad,
- 50:08Speaker 12: talk to the mom, and get those boys out hunting,
- 50:11Speaker 12: because that's ultimately what matters. And that's all I have
- 50:15Speaker 12: to say.
- 50:18Speaker 2: He's right, think of the kids. The children argue with
- 50:23Speaker 2: Chad on that one.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Yeah, good luck, Okay, Yeah, yeah, Phil, you want to
- 50:31Speaker 1: weigh in on that.
- 50:32Speaker 4: You know what, I wasn't listening at all because I
- 50:34Speaker 4: was prepping the next segment.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Cow uh yeah, darn darn right. Yeah, it's a it's
- 50:40Speaker 1: bummer when when kids get kind of caught in the
- 50:44Speaker 1: in the crosshairs of adult being adult issues. So you'll
- 50:52Speaker 1: get it figured out, little little time, a little talking
- 50:55Speaker 1: communication communication. Yes, we're gonna jump over now that we're
- 51:03Speaker 1: putting the kids to bed, because it's that's a transition.
- 51:07Speaker 5: As folks complained last time, So close your ears children.
- 51:11Speaker 1: Talk about sex with your host Corrine Schneider.
- 51:15Speaker 4: Y'll want to talk about geese, want to talk about mix,
- 51:17Speaker 4: We want to talk about justice on the Falcon bikes
- 51:20Speaker 4: and m Clone we for black Cap Chico tea.
- 51:25Speaker 1: I like to hear Steed say a word to come
- 51:27Speaker 1: to tea because occasionally you'll want to talk about sex.
- 51:35Speaker 2: Oh, it's groovy.
- 51:36Speaker 5: The tune is like very g rated get.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Misrepresents not for everybody.
- 51:44Speaker 5: Uh, let's talk about sex. Is where I enlighten everyone
- 51:47Speaker 5: on animal kingdom mating behaviors, and this week we're talking
- 51:51Speaker 5: about the North American porcupine ah mood. The mating is
- 52:00Speaker 5: rare for the North American porcupine, the second largest rodent
- 52:05Speaker 5: in North America, is known for its body armor of
- 52:09Speaker 5: thirty thousand quills. Females are basically celibate and so sexually
- 52:15Speaker 5: inactive that the vagina is closed with a membrane. In
- 52:21Speaker 5: the prime of September, the membrane dissolves and females become
- 52:25Speaker 5: receptive to mating. However, they are only fertile for an
- 52:31Speaker 5: eight to twelve hour period each year. Eight to twelve
- 52:36Speaker 5: hours each year only before the female porcupine comes into estrus,
- 52:42Speaker 5: she secretes a fragrant vaginal mucus. The scent, combined with
- 52:49Speaker 5: musky urine, brings all the boys to the yard. Unsurprisingly,
- 52:55Speaker 5: they fight over her with their sharp incize or teeth.
- 52:58Speaker 5: And quills, and some males will even battle to the death.
- 53:04Speaker 5: The lucky, victorious male, having chased all the other suitors away,
- 53:09Speaker 5: has earned the right to approach the female porcupine. He
- 53:13Speaker 5: attempts to court her, sometimes singing, doing an odd kind
- 53:18Speaker 5: of dance, or simply walking over to her on his
- 53:20Speaker 5: hind legs and releasing a jet stream of europe ooh
- 53:25Speaker 5: of Europe. No no, no, who start again, walking over
- 53:29Speaker 5: to her on his hind legs and releasing a jet
- 53:32Speaker 5: stream of urine onto her from up to six feet away.
- 53:38Speaker 5: If she is not ready, she might scream at him,
- 53:41Speaker 5: try to bite him, or simply run away. If the
- 53:45Speaker 5: male's pheromones are hard to resist, she'll allow him to
- 53:49Speaker 5: mate her, relaxing her spine and lifting her tail all
- 53:53Speaker 5: the way up so that the unquilled underside acts as
- 53:57Speaker 5: a cushion and the male doesn't get impaled. Once impregnated,
- 54:03Speaker 5: gestation lasts for about seven months, and in May, the
- 54:07Speaker 5: female will give birth to a single newborn porcupine called
- 54:11Speaker 5: adorably a porcupt That's the end of today's.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Lesson single single birth, Yes, single birth wild wild so
- 54:24Speaker 1: uh old timers will tell you you don't kill porcupines
- 54:27Speaker 1: because you can kill them with a stick. So when
- 54:31Speaker 1: winter is coming and you don't know how severe it's
- 54:34Speaker 1: going to be, you want to, you know, have that
- 54:39Speaker 1: easy food for when times are real hard around, so
- 54:43Speaker 1: you don't just kill porcupines willy nilly. And that would
- 54:46Speaker 1: definitely dovetail nicely with the fact that they have their
- 54:52Speaker 1: low fecundity species. If they're only dropping one young and
- 54:58Speaker 1: they have an eight to twelve hour or window once
- 55:00Speaker 1: a year.
- 55:01Speaker 2: Tight window, that's incredible. I had no idea. Yes, yeah,
- 55:06Speaker 2: fascinating animal.
- 55:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Plus the actual like biological physical barrier. Is there
- 55:14Speaker 1: a word for that in the animal kingdom like other animals.
- 55:18Speaker 5: That that's a good question. I will have to do
- 55:21Speaker 5: some research.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, very cool, Thank.
- 55:25Speaker 4: You, Karen.
- 55:26Speaker 5: Yeah, you bet, guys.
- 55:27Speaker 4: And before we move on to the next segment, last
- 55:29Speaker 4: call for Q and A at the end of the show,
- 55:31Speaker 4: so I get those questions in the live chat. If
- 55:33Speaker 4: you would like a chance for us to discuss them,
- 55:36Speaker 4: thank you.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Please, yes, alrighty, well, Koran, I will say that the
- 55:42Speaker 1: music makes that a little heavy. I'm starting to see
- 55:46Speaker 1: where our listeners are coming at us from. Do you
- 55:50Speaker 1: think Corey.
- 55:53Speaker 2: Coming from about six feet away.
- 55:56Speaker 1: In a jet. Anyway, we're gonna jump over you guys
- 56:02Speaker 1: to another musical number, our good friend Red Bargain here.
- 56:08Speaker 1: I hope I said that right. Read Read is on
- 56:10Speaker 1: the line. I know he's been sitting there with us.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Read is the piano man, and uh he's joining us
- 56:17Speaker 1: from Birmingham, Alabama. Read's piano news on Instagram. You've heard
- 56:23Speaker 1: him on the media, your podcast and mediator social media
- 56:25Speaker 1: channels before, but this is your first time on Meat
- 56:28Speaker 1: Eater Radio Live.
- 56:29Speaker 6: Read. How you doing doing great?
- 56:32Speaker 8: I mean watching the Wizard with that music soak in
- 56:36Speaker 8: the mating rituals was.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Magical. I loved it really quick.
- 56:43Speaker 4: Turn up the gain on, Turn up the gain on
- 56:45Speaker 4: your end? Your little quiet?
- 56:47Speaker 6: How is that?
- 56:49Speaker 4: Can you a little higher? How is that? Yeah?
- 56:52Speaker 7: There we are.
- 56:53Speaker 3: Okay, So you're gonna the Wizard, the Wizard. I can't
- 56:58Speaker 3: get over it.
- 56:59Speaker 1: You're gonna sit there in Birmingham, Alabama, and tell me,
- 57:02Speaker 1: honestly that that's your first experience with something like that.
- 57:09Speaker 3: I'll plead the fifth.
- 57:12Speaker 8: So also, I am disappointed, given everybody's got costumes on.
- 57:19Speaker 8: I started looking through the closet this morning and the
- 57:21Speaker 8: best I could come up with was my mom's teacher sweater.
- 57:25Speaker 3: From the early nine.
- 57:29Speaker 5: Amazing it.
- 57:31Speaker 3: Well, it's a summer motif.
- 57:32Speaker 13: Oh yeah, and I just thought it's not really even
- 57:37Speaker 13: a character and I don't know, this thing could go
- 57:39Speaker 13: pretty south when you start off with a teacher sweater,
- 57:42Speaker 13: so I.
- 57:43Speaker 3: Opted not to wear it. But y'all all look great.
- 57:46Speaker 2: Well, thank you, thanks for reed.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Where are you going with those compliments?
- 57:50Speaker 4: Read?
- 57:53Speaker 1: What what do you have for us today?
- 57:56Speaker 5: Oh? Wait, before that, I just wanted to I'm going
- 57:59Speaker 5: to interrupt and just ask you for a little bit
- 58:01Speaker 5: of the backstory of how Reid's Piano News got started
- 58:07Speaker 5: because folks reach us, reach out to us about him.
- 58:10Speaker 1: A while back the show, I was gonna do it
- 58:13Speaker 1: on the back end, but you know what, she's feeling
- 58:18Speaker 1: spicy from her segment, A little costume and.
- 58:26Speaker 5: Very clever guy.
- 58:27Speaker 1: Yeah, very creative fellow. You are there, Read what what
- 58:32Speaker 1: what brought you to this point in time?
- 58:35Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 58:36Speaker 8: Well, I think I've I've always sort of had the
- 58:38Speaker 8: musical itch. After I went to Auburn and med and
- 58:41Speaker 8: a bunch of buddies moved back to Birmingham and started
- 58:44Speaker 8: a a cover band for like three or four years,
- 58:47Speaker 8: and then we did everything from from you know, Nelly
- 58:50Speaker 8: to call Me Maybe to Joe Diffy. It was kind
- 58:52Speaker 8: of all over and just occasionally playing at bars in Birmingham.
- 58:55Speaker 3: And then you know how how it goes.
- 58:57Speaker 8: Everybody has kids and uh, that takes priority.
- 59:00Speaker 3: That's a that's a good thing.
- 59:02Speaker 8: But the the music, you know, playing out sort of
- 59:05Speaker 8: dropped off, but the the itch sort of remained. And uh,
- 59:09Speaker 8: the first time I made a video like what's on
- 59:11Speaker 8: the Instagram page? I think it was, we had a
- 59:13Speaker 8: guys trip lined up to go down to Orange Beach,
- 59:17Speaker 8: and uh, you.
- 59:18Speaker 3: Know they're just you don't get a guy.
- 59:20Speaker 8: It's it's effort to get a guys trip, you know,
- 59:22Speaker 8: teed up and together everybody can go and you finally
- 59:25Speaker 8: we had it, and the exact day we were supposed
- 59:27Speaker 8: to get down there, Hurricane Sally was coming right up
- 59:31Speaker 8: the Alabama Gulf coast and we needed to pivot, uh,
- 59:35Speaker 8: and pulled the old my uncle's got a lake house
- 59:39Speaker 8: somewhere in Alabama, and I.
- 59:41Speaker 3: Pulled the old, hey uncle, can we use your lake house? Move?
- 59:44Speaker 8: And it seemed like it took him three days to
- 59:46Speaker 8: get back to us, and we're all ancient. You know,
- 59:49Speaker 8: you don't want to punt the guys trip if you
- 59:51Speaker 8: if you can afford it, and uh he uh finally
- 59:55Speaker 8: texted back. He's like, yeah, no problem, you'll you'll go
- 59:57Speaker 8: have a good time. And I wrote I consider it
- 1:00:01Speaker 8: a masterpiece. It's called We're going to the Lake, and
- 1:00:04Speaker 8: that's all the lyrics, and it's We're going to the
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: Lake about twenty times in a row. And generally my
- 1:00:11Speaker 8: friends will tell me if, you know, if I'm doing
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: something just ridiculously dumb, or if it's a bad idea,
- 1:00:16Speaker 8: and they seem to kind of like it, so, you know,
- 1:00:20Speaker 8: I kind of got the idea, like, well, maybe I
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: wonder what happened. I think I found a story about
- 1:00:27Speaker 8: this bear and a Chinese zoo that people couldn't figure
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: out if he was a zoo keeper dressed up in
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: a bear's uniform or if it actually was a zoo.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: It's it is very ambiguous.
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: It looks a little bit like both, and I'm not
- 1:00:40Speaker 8: still certain whether whether it's a person or a bear.
- 1:00:44Speaker 8: But wrote a song about that, and they, you know,
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: got some encouragement, and then you know, it's kind of.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: Taken off since then, so you quit quit the day job.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Totally alright, and it's all piano new right.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: Yeah, no, we're I've got this is I'm doing this
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: for my third house.
- 1:01:05Speaker 8: Oh I love it, so yeah, no, it's it's what's
- 1:01:09Speaker 8: going awesome.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: You got a knack man, you definitely definitely do. Unfortunately,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: you're really setting yourself up for a high standard today
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: now that we got the backstory ahead of time. Yes, okay, well, uh,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: you have piano news for us today, correct.
- 1:01:26Speaker 8: I do, And I look, I hate, especially this close
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: to election. I hate to come on here and be
- 1:01:31Speaker 8: wildly politically divisive.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: But you know, I just that's why.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Okay, Well, you got to go where the news takes you.
- 1:01:41Speaker 8: And as of late, we found that, uh, there's a
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: dog that has scaled the Great Pyramid of Giza and
- 1:01:49Speaker 8: it has taken northern Africa by storm. And uh it's uh,
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: you know, it's heavy, but I think that people need
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: to know, and so I'm happy to play it for y'all.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: We love to hear.
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: We love this live performance.
- 1:02:05Speaker 11: Read.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I got to tell you out of the gate, it
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: doesn't sound like this one writes itself. So hens and
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: needles over here.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: All right here you, greatest.
- 1:02:27Speaker 11: Thing man has ever built. There's a dog on top
- 1:02:32Speaker 11: of it. The most ancient mystery on Earth. Top there's
- 1:02:40Speaker 11: a good boy perched. Arry Ladder said he was arcad
- 1:02:45Speaker 11: at birds.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: I bet you. Now most northern Africa is heard.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Doll.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: There's a dog on.
- 1:02:57Speaker 11: Gezon.
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: You seeking fish and climb five hundred feet up.
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: Main ever being.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: The same, I think mistakes probably.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Be replaced my dog.
- 1:03:16Speaker 12: There's a doll, the.
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: Biggest part of it on Earth.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: I wonder if Alins build these things. Also mobies because
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: it's Halloween. Dog yeah, woo dog on log. So there's that.
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: That was great? Inspired?
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Oh no, excellent, And I just slete you for having
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: the courage to back up Dog Gone with Dog Gone brilliant.
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:04:00Speaker 8: Well, it took a lot of guts and it's something
- 1:04:04Speaker 8: I lost sleep over, but you know, made it through
- 1:04:07Speaker 8: and here we are.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Oh, not only made it through, but I think you
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: crushed it for sure, that's for sure. What What where
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: you're at in your season in Alabama? What's up next
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: for you?
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:04:21Speaker 8: So I've got two youngins. They're they're nine and five.
- 1:04:24Speaker 8: We u The season lately has been football and baseball,
- 1:04:28Speaker 8: but we're finally through with that. We're I'm actually checking
- 1:04:31Speaker 8: them out of school tomorrow, Togo, fix up some stands
- 1:04:34Speaker 8: and work on some roads and you season opens November fifteenth,
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: then adult.
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: Seasons a week after that.
- 1:04:40Speaker 8: So yeah, I got the nine year old is absolutely
- 1:04:44Speaker 8: determined to get one on the ground this year.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: So we're we're excited.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: Man, I'm excited for you. I mean, they're not going
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: to learn that stuff in school. Get those kids out
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: of there, well, certainly not.
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: Yep, yep.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: Good luck to you guys.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you much.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: At Reid's Piano News on Instagram.
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: R E E D S P I A N O
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: N E w S get your fill of the news musically.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: That's on I N S T hey G R A M.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: Thank you very much. Read that was awesome, Thanks so much.
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: Read.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Uh, all right, we're wrapping up the show and we're
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: gonna do so with Q and A. Q. Did you
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: find some some cherries for it, Dave. We got a
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: few questions first before we do that, though. I want to,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: I just want to. I was going through an old picture.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: I was telling Krin and the guys about it earlier
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: five years ago. Today we had our first costume contest
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: here at Meat Eater. I just wanted to can I
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: bring this in here?
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: There?
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: We are?
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Wow?
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: Okay, so that's like pretty much the entire company right there.
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: But then I wanted to just point out some of
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: the people who are here still here today. I was
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: Doc Klala Day, the white Claw Cowboy. I still have
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: not topped this. It was a lot of work and
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: I don't think I'll do anything like it again. And
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: then we've got Spencer was Amish and Giannis was a cow.
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: And then we have same costume guys in the same costume.
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: Looking thrilled to be there. And that's Kylie with the
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: with the sushi they were they came as an Asian
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: food pair. Yes, And then that's not what I meant
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: to do. And we've got Steve as that insurance guy
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: who keeps getting hurt. I think he's got a name.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: Or the original version. Oh yeah.
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: And then Cal was was our good friend Jeffrey, right,
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: I think yep, yeah, Carls Jeffrey Carls, Carl's character creation
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: Mayhem Mayhem. That's right.
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: Wait was Cal not in that photo?
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: That was Cal?
- 1:06:56Speaker 7: That was.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: At the time everybody was confusing us. So that's what yeah, anyway, Yeah.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: All right, let's move on to the questions here we've got.
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: Let's see, this is kind of a broad question that
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: maybe you can offer some first steps here. Brady's wondering
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: how a man plans an Alaskan caribou archery hunt for
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: himself and his dad within a five year period. I
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: don't know if there's anything this far out he should
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: start prepping forward or training for signing documents for.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Cal You ever had a caribou. I've never had a caribou.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: No, yeah, same, No.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I mean, there's there's a bunch of ways to go
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: about this. There's a lot of good like do it
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: yourself forums out there where you could connect with people
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: and just learn about like some the your your fly
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: in operators are going to be the ones that you
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: need to figure out. And then those folks are gonna
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: have tabs on where those caribou herds are consistently coming
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: through and what numbers right, because obviously you want to
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: get there into a spot where you're going to see
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: some stuff. If if you want to go to the
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: fly in route, you can go off the Alaskan Highway
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: as well, and that's archery only within the that two
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: mile corridor on both sides of the highway, and that's
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: a big road trip and that'd be super cool too,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: But you're not necessarily going to be there picking out trophies, right,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: Like the trip is going to be the trophy, no
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: matter what. But if you go in with with one
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: of the fly in operators, you're going to see way
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: more numbers and be able to, you know, just do
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: some some judging if you hit it right. So like
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: going on now, old Randy Newberg's forum, Hunt Talk is
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: a great place. Rockslide is still a great place to
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: get a good do it yourself information. And yeah, it's
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: just gonna take time doing some research and find some
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: finding some people who are flying and you can reference
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: as straight shooters.
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: Awesome, that sound good. M hmm, all right, this would
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: be a good question for Randall's since he's got some
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: first hand experience. But callen ser you've guys have to say.
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: Stephanie says, I'd like to work in conservation. Any recommendations.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: I'm thirteen in Idaho. She's wondering about TRCP fishing game
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: or pheasants forever.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, all awesome, awesome things to think about. Everybody
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: has a program to get folks out as volunteers. Starting
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: as a volunteers a great way of getting to know
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: those communities and expanding your own community. And then you know,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: you can talk about doing the school route, but seeing
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: as you're thirteen, you could probably start even applying for
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: some like wildlife tech internships through IDFG, Idaho Fishing Game.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: There's some great, great phenomenal people at IDFG, at all
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: these organizations really, so we can follow up with you
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: on that. I'm sure we got some listeners that probably
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: have more of a direct way to go, but look
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: for volunteer opportunities and just try some out. There'll be
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: a bunch coming up here in the spring.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: We love that question though, Stephanie, the future looks bright.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Also come out for Brush for Bucks. We're gonna plant
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: sagebrush seedlings with Idaho Fish and Game and the Hush
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: Crew and First Light as we do every year. Now,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: it's a great program. We're all out there volunteering and
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: IDFG as well as I think we have some TRCP
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: folks out there, regional folks and BHA folks out there,
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: so good, good opportunity to come out do some work
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: that benefits wildlife directly, and you'll get to know some
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: peers in that community.
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: This is a similar similar vein here Jonathan's asking if
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: the Meat Eater crew wants a college intern. Jonathan, we
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: usually have one or two interns floating around the office
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: these days, and we post them on our website. If
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: you go to the meat Eater dot com and scroll
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: all the way down until you find a career's button,
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: we will be occasionally hire interns, so keep an eye
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: open there. I think we also post them on like
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: job sites and stuff too. So Cal thoughts on the
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: recent changes to Idaho's bear seasons with regards to GRIZ
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: and the new rules. I don't know if you're if
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: you know about this, I'm kind of putting you on
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: the spot here.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Oh U, Matt. We worked for years to try to
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: get uh where he had to take the meat out
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: of the field in Idaho, and hopefully that happened. I'm
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: not up to up to snuff on the regulation change though,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: so I'm sorry, but I will do my research and
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: we'll cover it in Cal's wee can review asap, which
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: I've just reminded.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: Me that I need to get that to fill today. Yeah,
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: I got to edit it tomorrow.
- 1:12:04Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: Oh let's see here, Cal, Would you ever be interested
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: in pheasant hunting with a falconer? Is that something then
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: you've done or would want to do? It's from Josh.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, any sort of hunting I'm always interested in.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: I have been out with some falconers before they were
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: flying peregrins and it was incredibly incredibly cool, incredibly cool.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: I also just straightforward. You people are nuts. The level
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: of care those birds take. It's like it's one of
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: the few hunting animals where I've been like, oh, that's
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: neat for other people.
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: And not me versus I want one.
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh man, They're incredible, absolutely incredible. But that's a
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: very that's a very adult game that I'm not not
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: quite there yet.
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Very dedicated, yes, very dedicated.
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: Elane as during Cheddikut Chet ever works because he's always
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: just sitting by a fire, Layne. When when Chet moved
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: back to Wisconsin, we said he could keep working for us,
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: but he has to just live outside near a burning
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: fire at all times, and he agreed. Spot let's see here,
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: I had one. Oh yeah, someone asked about one minute
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: fishing because we didn't do it today for the first time.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: It's not going anywhere, guys, it's coming back. We just
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: I ordered some new equipment because we've got like a
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: little cell phone dead zone back at our usual pond,
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: and so I wanted it to look good instead of
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: look bad. That's what I strive for usually. Keep that's right.
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: And on that note, Uh, that's all I got for questions.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: That's really wow, gang, We we covered politics hard in
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: this episode. I can't can't believe you fell short on that.
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: Well, I'm kind of glad that the live chat didn't
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: didn't just devolve into a cesspit of yelling at each other.
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: So I'm actually proud of you guys for not not
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: pypen in too much about that. Yeah, well that's one
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: of the greatest. Someone said that the election was going
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: to be a landslide, but they didn't say so.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: You know, yeah, the heck of a community. Hats off
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: to you. You know, we have game show where conservation
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: always wins, and if we all work hard, no matter
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: the administration, we're going to make sure that all the
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: things that matter to us always win.
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: Two.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: That's That's what I'm gonna do. Please join, Let's make
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: it happen any closers. We don't do that typically, but.
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: Nope, nope, I just h I saw in the initial
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: comments that people thought you look like what's his name
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: in the weather man?
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: Rondy comments, all right, that's how he's signing off.
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: All the quotes I know out of anchorman are not appropriate.
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: No, so especially the ones of him behind the news
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: this ruler, Well, this is fun.
