- 0:51Speaker 4: And basketball players and coaches talk about the clinching game
- 0:54Speaker 4: is always the most difficult.
- 0:56Speaker 5: Is this game against City? How to have that feel
- 0:58Speaker 5: and what's like the key to get a quipped with?
- 1:00Speaker 4: Well, I think look this game to since he has
- 1:03Speaker 4: that feel because here we are at the end of
- 1:05Speaker 4: the season. We know we're playing a good football team.
- 1:08Speaker 4: You know, a team that's been in the playoffs and
- 1:12Speaker 4: you've kind of been where we've aspired to go and
- 1:17Speaker 4: so yeah, like I said at the very beginning, you
- 1:20Speaker 4: know all the details. You know, we're going to have
- 1:23Speaker 4: to play not a perfect game, but we're gonna have
- 1:27Speaker 4: to play one of our best games. And I think
- 1:30Speaker 4: our players understand that.
- 1:31Speaker 6: Jeff Lakewell from ESPN, brought to you by the International
- 1:34Speaker 6: Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight, start with
- 1:37Speaker 6: a job end with the career lay. Happy holidays, man,
- 1:40Speaker 6: how is your Christmas? I was a family that all
- 1:44Speaker 6: go yesterday for you?
- 1:45Speaker 5: Well, it was Christmas at the Broncos yesterday. But that's
- 1:48Speaker 5: all right, I'm going.
- 1:49Speaker 1: To look at it. He grinds right through Santa.
- 1:50Speaker 6: Man.
- 1:51Speaker 1: This guy just grinds. I love it.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Well, they well, all right, did the Broncos make any changes?
- 1:57Speaker 2: I think they did. They start a little bit later
- 1:59Speaker 2: or I mean did they Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Just a smidge, but they they treated it like a
- 2:03Speaker 3: you know, they would have a Wednesday most or a
- 2:08Speaker 3: Thursday most of the time. This would have been yesterday,
- 2:11Speaker 3: would have been what a Thursday looked like most weeks.
- 2:13Speaker 3: But uh so today is a football Friday, uh in
- 2:18Speaker 3: many ways for them. But uh yeah, I think that
- 2:22Speaker 3: you know, practice ended, you know, after three es yesterday
- 2:27Speaker 3: and and you know then then then they let them go.
- 2:30Speaker 3: So I think they they had a little Christmas uh
- 2:33Speaker 3: in and around the practice schedule, but.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Then they got to obviously pay attention to what went
- 2:39Speaker 1: on with the Kansas City and that was the best
- 2:41Speaker 1: case scenario obviously, because the Chiefs, Jeff, I can't imagine
- 2:45Speaker 1: they'll play anybody of significance, you know, a week from
- 2:49Speaker 1: this weekend, but I guess we'll find out. But they've
- 2:53Speaker 1: wrapped everything up, so that helps the Broncos an awful lot.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And I don't want to have like as coach everyone
- 2:58Speaker 1: called a loser's mentality that you have some leeway here
- 3:00Speaker 1: should you fall at the Bengals. But you have some
- 3:03Speaker 1: leeway here, man, you've played yourself in a position where
- 3:06Speaker 1: you could afford to lose that game if you don't
- 3:08Speaker 1: play your best and still play the JV team for
- 3:11Speaker 1: Kansas City and play your way in well.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Most the only thing I would caution on the Chiefs
- 3:17Speaker 3: is if they don't play anybody against the Broncos, then
- 3:21Speaker 3: that's like twenty something days between yesterday's game and their
- 3:27Speaker 3: playoff game because they have.
- 3:29Speaker 5: The bye now. So I'm not sure Andy Reid.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Would let their team go twenty four days, twenty five
- 3:37Speaker 3: days without playing anybody in that finale. But you know, again,
- 3:42Speaker 3: we'll see they do have some extra time now to
- 3:46Speaker 3: get people healthy before the Bronco game if they choose
- 3:51Speaker 3: to play some. But it's hard for me to believe
- 3:54Speaker 3: this time of year you would let all your starters
- 3:57Speaker 3: go over twenty days without playing in a game. So
- 4:02Speaker 3: I think we may get some cameos, uh you know
- 4:06Speaker 3: that last week or whatever, But I'm not sure that
- 4:08Speaker 3: Broncos should should sort of think about having leeway because
- 4:13Speaker 3: again that even cases you know, quote unquote JV team
- 4:18Speaker 3: has been around big games, has been around winning games,
- 4:22Speaker 3: has been around championship games. Ah, that's a different kind
- 4:27Speaker 3: of team than everybody else in many ways because they
- 4:32Speaker 3: win more than everybody else. And I think it's it's
- 4:37Speaker 3: always a bad strategy to sort of mess around with
- 4:41Speaker 3: a team like that and just think you're gonna, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 3: handle business with no problem.
- 4:48Speaker 4: You know.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I think the Broncos best bet is to act like
- 4:50Speaker 3: that they have to win Saturday and go from there,
- 4:54Speaker 3: you know, and then deal with what's in front of
- 4:56Speaker 3: them that last week. But uh, you know, a tough.
- 5:00Speaker 3: You know, if it's if it's super rainy like it's
- 5:02Speaker 3: supposed to be, then you know, that's a whole new
- 5:05Speaker 3: thing because it's a lot easier for the offense to
- 5:09Speaker 3: deal with weather in many ways because they know where
- 5:12Speaker 3: they're going.
- 5:13Speaker 6: All right, I think you're right, Like how many offensive
- 5:17Speaker 6: lineman can you really rest? I mean, they're all going
- 5:19Speaker 6: to play.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Basically, it's not commed.
- 5:21Speaker 5: You can't go twenty days without playing anybody. I don't
- 5:25Speaker 5: think it.
- 5:25Speaker 6: But they probably won't play Mahomes, they probably won't play Kelsey,
- 5:28Speaker 6: they probably won't play Chris Jones, the well DJ Humphrey
- 5:31Speaker 6: hasn't been playing, so whatever, you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 5:34Speaker 6: anybody who's kind of this, that or the other thing
- 5:36Speaker 6: probably doesn't play. But you know, it's still the Chiefs,
- 5:40Speaker 6: still Andy Reid, whoever's there is going to try to win.
- 5:42Speaker 6: I mean, I get that, I get that. The good
- 5:44Speaker 6: news for the Broncos, though, Jeff is you do have
- 5:46Speaker 6: a little wiggle room, don't you a little bit? Whether
- 5:49Speaker 6: you want to use that as an excuse or not,
- 5:50Speaker 6: I suppose that's up to you. But the disparity between
- 5:55Speaker 6: what the defense for the Broncos used to be and
- 5:57Speaker 6: what they are now over the past month, this is
- 5:59Speaker 6: a little disturbing. So as it as simple as you
- 6:02Speaker 6: don't have Riley mossers, there's something else going on there.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Well, it's uh, it is you look at the the issues.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I mean, the thing of it is is they're you know,
- 6:14Speaker 3: the numbers and the metrics are still very good even
- 6:16Speaker 3: with the last three games. But it's been the last
- 6:21Speaker 3: three games and just look at their numbers with Riley
- 6:24Speaker 3: Moss and without Riley Moss crazy And it's that's all
- 6:28Speaker 3: you need to know. And that's today's NFL. You've got
- 6:32Speaker 3: to cover in space. You know, you're in the nickel
- 6:35Speaker 3: most of the time. You're you know, teams are throwing
- 6:37Speaker 3: most of the time. Uh. And it's it's a bigger
- 6:42Speaker 3: drop off between Riley Moss and everybody else than than
- 6:46Speaker 3: everyone thought.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Perhaps.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And the guy who was supposed to be the solution
- 6:50Speaker 3: they've released, they've waved. Levi Wallace has been waived.
- 6:54Speaker 5: You know, he was signed in.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Free agency with the idea he might even Startley Moss
- 7:01Speaker 3: and now he's been waived. And you know that splitting
- 7:06Speaker 3: the time between tomorrow mathis you know, and and and
- 7:10Speaker 3: the rookie Chris Abrams train has worked okay, and they
- 7:13Speaker 3: were a little better, but you know, still some dropped
- 7:18Speaker 3: dropped coverages, which is a sure sign of assignment errors.
- 7:22Speaker 3: You know, that's not really an athletic error, that's an
- 7:26Speaker 3: assignment air. And I think Vance Joseph said it pretty
- 7:30Speaker 3: well yesterday and he said, you know, the last month
- 7:33Speaker 3: of the season, everyone knows your warts, and if you
- 7:37Speaker 3: make any mistakes at all, people are gonna are gonna
- 7:40Speaker 3: punish you for those And that's what they're that's what
- 7:43Speaker 3: they're seeing. And you know, Moss has been a full
- 7:46Speaker 3: participant in practice this week. I think if nothing happens,
- 7:50Speaker 3: he plays at least some Saturday, and it would definitely
- 7:54Speaker 3: help because he is he is more physical, he is
- 7:57Speaker 3: more athletic, he is more everything than any potential replacement.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah, he certainly is. So is this a case you
- 8:05Speaker 1: think of again, those warts being exposed, the chickens coming
- 8:08Speaker 1: home to roost or is this just hey man? We've
- 8:11Speaker 1: also faced some pretty good players. I mean, say what
- 8:13Speaker 1: you will about James Winston. That guy can throw the football.
- 8:16Speaker 1: We know that that Justin Herbert can throw the football.
- 8:18Speaker 1: We know that the Colts can run the football, you
- 8:22Speaker 1: know what I mean. These teams do some things really well.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Yeah, and again they know they made a mistake by
- 8:29Speaker 3: not putting Certain on Judy and just saying, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 3: try and get it. And they've sort of quasi admitted
- 8:36Speaker 3: that in the week since. You know that the run
- 8:40Speaker 3: defense against the Colts much better in the second half.
- 8:43Speaker 3: You know, the big run was the big run. Uh,
- 8:47Speaker 3: but again that's an assignment there. You know, a guy
- 8:50Speaker 3: misses one gap in run defense and it's a big run,
- 8:53Speaker 3: and that's that's the kind of thing you can't have
- 8:56Speaker 3: this time of year. But you know that I think
- 8:59Speaker 3: that in LA those were pure you know, that's young
- 9:03Speaker 3: players at corner not getting the the passovers in zone
- 9:07Speaker 3: defense or finding their guy in a bunch, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: in man defense.
- 9:12Speaker 5: It was just mistakes.
- 9:14Speaker 6: Uh.
- 9:15Speaker 3: You know, none of that happened on Certain's side of
- 9:17Speaker 3: the field, you know. So that's that's what they're dealing
- 9:20Speaker 3: with right now. And uh, you know, I think it
- 9:24Speaker 3: does offer them. You know, for Riley Moss plays, you
- 9:28Speaker 3: have the option of putting Certain on Jamar Chase as
- 9:31Speaker 3: much as possible, and I think they'd like to do that.
- 9:35Speaker 5: If if they can.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Jeff, you know what, uh covering the Broncos for a
- 9:39Speaker 2: long time.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Is uh, well some days, I know, yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Wisdom, you were gonna say old, but I wasn't gonna
- 9:48Speaker 6: go there. I was going to go with wisdom and
- 9:52Speaker 6: a lot of candles both both is what it is.
- 9:56Speaker 6: There's between the three of us. There's a lot of
- 9:58Speaker 6: wisdom going on here with the with the Broncos.
- 10:01Speaker 5: So I fell season thirty eight for me, so that's awesome.
- 10:06Speaker 6: So this is not the first time the Broncos have
- 10:08Speaker 6: been in a situation where they've had three games to
- 10:10Speaker 6: win one to make the playoffs, and it hasn't always
- 10:14Speaker 6: gone great, including including the end of the Mike Shanahan
- 10:18Speaker 6: era correct where they needed three to win one and
- 10:21Speaker 6: they and they really screwed the pooch on the final game,
- 10:25Speaker 6: got blown out by the Chargers fifty two to whatever.
- 10:28Speaker 6: Can you compare and contrast the vibe with what's going
- 10:31Speaker 6: on now and perhaps some of those years, And this
- 10:36Speaker 6: is not the first time the Broncos have actually been
- 10:39Speaker 6: to this rodeo before and it's not gone well. So
- 10:42Speaker 6: I'm curious if you can sort of compare those type
- 10:45Speaker 6: of seasons, what's similar, what's different, and what you're sort
- 10:49Speaker 6: of looking for here?
- 10:50Speaker 5: You know, even last year a little bit t back,
- 10:52Speaker 5: a little bit of a New England game.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, yeah, and.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Uh you know kubiaks kubiaks.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Last year, that two thousand sixteen team came down the
- 11:01Speaker 3: stretch a little clunky, you know, they couple drop passes
- 11:07Speaker 3: or that. You know, they're like two drop passes from
- 11:09Speaker 3: being eleven and five that year, you know, and then
- 11:12Speaker 3: But I think that the difference is this is a
- 11:16Speaker 3: far younger team than those teams, and a young team
- 11:19Speaker 3: carries less baggage.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Okay, I would say, all right, you know, it's good.
- 11:23Speaker 3: You got a lot of players who don't sort of
- 11:26Speaker 3: feel the angst Courtland Sutton Fields, you know, of trying
- 11:30Speaker 3: to get to the playoffs, and you know, does that
- 11:33Speaker 3: add pressure to it? So I think a young team,
- 11:37Speaker 3: the pressure they feel is the pressure in the moment,
- 11:40Speaker 3: not pressure of history.
- 11:42Speaker 5: So now you know, if they're.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Around a lot of people that keep you know, and
- 11:47Speaker 3: we keep asking about it, certainly in our little group,
- 11:51Speaker 3: you know, they they're reminded of it a lot.
- 11:53Speaker 5: But I think a younger team carries less baggage per se.
- 11:57Speaker 3: And it's a lot more about getting them to handle
- 12:00Speaker 3: the moment rather than getting them to forget the pass
- 12:04Speaker 3: type of thing.
- 12:05Speaker 5: And I think that's the biggest difference.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Uh And and the other thing that, you know, the
- 12:10Speaker 3: things that they're dealing with right now are really basic
- 12:13Speaker 3: football things. You're seeing defenses with an awful lot of
- 12:17Speaker 3: information on bow Knicks now making him do things that
- 12:21Speaker 3: make him uncomfortable. You're seeing offenses attack the parts of
- 12:26Speaker 3: the Bronco defense where they have the replacements in.
- 12:29Speaker 5: You know, so you're seeing.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Late season adjustments, late season football. I think that's the
- 12:35Speaker 3: issue rather than sort of a mental block right now
- 12:39Speaker 3: for this team.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Jeff, what are we looking at in Cincinnati? I know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: it's a defense that gives up a lot, right, a
- 12:46Speaker 1: lot of yards, points, hold on yards.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Terrible on third down.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Zone.
- 12:51Speaker 1: But they also have a quarterback who's the best passer
- 12:53Speaker 1: of the football right now, at least at this point
- 12:55Speaker 1: in the season. He's number one in passing yards and
- 12:58Speaker 1: he's having a phenomenal year and they put up nearly
- 13:01Speaker 1: thirty of games. What the hell are we gonna look
- 13:03Speaker 1: at it coming up on Saturday night?
- 13:05Speaker 5: Well, you know, I think the Broncos are just gonna
- 13:09Speaker 5: have to.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Decide if they're gonna keep banging their head against the wall.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I mean, they entered the week before yesterday's games, bo
- 13:19Speaker 3: Nicks is fifth in the NFL and pass attempts. Is
- 13:22Speaker 3: that really the way you should play with a rookie quarterback?
- 13:26Speaker 3: That's that's all I ask anyone fifth he is he
- 13:31Speaker 3: entered this week with fifty more pass attempts than Josh Allen.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Is that how the Broncos should play offense? And if
- 13:40Speaker 3: you play that way Saturday, the Bengals will send you
- 13:43Speaker 3: a nice thank you note in a bouquet, because they
- 13:47Speaker 3: want as many possessions as possible because they know they
- 13:50Speaker 3: need them, and they know they they have three receivers,
- 13:55Speaker 3: three who would lead the Broncos in touchdown catches right now.
- 13:59Speaker 5: That's crazy the ball all.
- 14:01Speaker 3: The time because they're good at it. And if the
- 14:04Speaker 3: Broncos give them as many possessions as they gave the Browns,
- 14:08Speaker 3: as they gave the Colts and even a little bit
- 14:12Speaker 3: the Chargers, that that's not the kind of game they
- 14:15Speaker 3: want to be in. But Sean Payton has talked an
- 14:19Speaker 3: awful lot about wanting to figure out the run game.
- 14:24Speaker 3: But he doesn't call a lot of run plays. So
- 14:28Speaker 3: it's been the great riddle of the season is what's
- 14:33Speaker 3: the disconnect between what he says during the week and
- 14:36Speaker 3: what he does when the play cards in his hand.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I mean even wrote a reminder to himself. We all saw,
- 14:43Speaker 3: you know, on the play sheet in LA and they
- 14:46Speaker 3: still only ran the ball fourteen times after the first
- 14:50Speaker 3: drive of the game.
- 14:52Speaker 6: Yeah, it's remarkable too, because those three drives right off
- 14:55Speaker 6: the bat were beautiful and then but it was funny,
- 15:00Speaker 6: Sean said, like there was no momentum shift. That was
- 15:02Speaker 6: a garbage, garbage storyline except for the fact everybody on
- 15:07Speaker 6: the Charger said that it totally shifted the moment exactly.
- 15:09Speaker 6: So aside from everybody on the other team saying that
- 15:12Speaker 6: shifted the momentum, according to Sean, it had no impact,
- 15:17Speaker 6: which okay, Jeff and Joyce, Cincinnati. Does today feel like
- 15:22Speaker 6: a Friday? To you? By the way?
- 15:23Speaker 2: Does it?
- 15:23Speaker 1: Do you?
- 15:24Speaker 2: Do you get wrapped up in the same sort of
- 15:26Speaker 2: mentality like the football week.
- 15:29Speaker 3: I'm such a robot when when I see them doing
- 15:31Speaker 3: certain things that practice, that's what day I think it answer.
- 15:34Speaker 5: It doesn't even matter.
- 15:35Speaker 2: What today's Friday for you woke up to the house Friday.
- 15:39Speaker 3: If if somebody asked me all day and what day
- 15:42Speaker 3: it is, I'll tell them Friday, and I won't even hesitate.
- 15:46Speaker 6: I have a good trip to to Cincinnati. We'll talk
- 15:49Speaker 6: to you next week. Queen, say hi to Mark Moser's daughter.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Oh she's here.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Oh, but she's gonna go with Jeff there.
- 15:56Speaker 1: She's not going back for a while.
- 15:58Speaker 2: I thought you said she's gonna be at the game.
- 16:00Speaker 1: No, I said, she's not going to the game. But
- 16:01Speaker 1: she's gonna be at Cincinnati when all those guys are
- 16:03Speaker 1: knocked out of the playoffs, hanging out with them.
- 16:05Speaker 6: Okay, so she'll eventually, she'll eventually be back in Cincinnati someday.
- 16:11Speaker 6: Jeff Lagwell is brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 16:13Speaker 6: of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Start with a new job and with a career.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 1: So yeah, if you think you want to get into
- 16:20Speaker 1: a passing match, if you want to go aerial attack
- 16:24Speaker 1: and try to match Cincinnati area wise, you're gonna lose
- 16:28Speaker 1: that game.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Well you don't have them.
- 16:30Speaker 6: Well, okay, you don't have which is why I don't
- 16:32Speaker 6: feel really good about this game.
- 16:34Speaker 2: We'll talk about that coming up
- 16:35Speaker 6: Next Today's Friday
