A man in the Catskills got himself in hot water after authorities found a timber rattlesnake—its head chilling in his freezer—in a bucket outside his property. He admitted to bringing the threatened species back from elsewhere and now faces fines. Timber rattlesnakes, once hunted for bounties and now protected since 1983, are vital to New York’s ecosystem.
