- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:31All right, the. Title of today's message is No
- 0:33condemnation in Jesus. No condemnation in Jesus from
- 0:38John. Chapter 8.
- 0:40We'll look at the verse 1st 11 verses here, but with that
- 0:44title. I understand and I've had lots
- 0:46of conversations even this morning that many people do come
- 0:49into this place feeling condemned, feeling condemned
- 0:53because perhaps you've been caught up in sin in your life or
- 0:57there's compromise in your life. You know that God has given you
- 1:02chance after chance after chance, but you also know you've
- 1:06blown it over and over again, and perhaps what you're feeling
- 1:11this morning. Is that God is?
- 1:13Angry with you? Or perhaps you're feeling like
- 1:16God is frustrated with me. Or at the very least, God is.
- 1:20Disappointed with me and sometimes we think about the
- 1:23way. We would get in trouble.
- 1:24With our parents and we tend to think sometimes maybe God
- 1:27responds to us the way that mom did or the way.
- 1:30That Dad did. And and you know.
- 1:32That God Forgives we we we have the verses it's written.
- 1:35We know that, but there are a number of us this morning I.
- 1:39Believe that are. Having a hard time?
- 1:42Believing that God Forgives. Me.
- 1:45I know he forgives the person to my right or to my left, but I'm
- 1:49having a hard time believing it for myself.
- 1:52Well, you're not alone. You're not alone, as we're going
- 1:54to see in the. Text Today there's a particular.
- 1:56Woman here. That.
- 1:58Also felt the same way. So we're going to read this
- 2:00together, John chapter 8, but we'll pick up here in the last
- 2:04verse of Chapter 7 verse. 35 here.
- 2:08Where it says and everyone went to his own house in chapter 8
- 2:13verse one. But Jesus.
- 2:14Went to the mount. Of olives.
- 2:17Now this was during what? Was called the Feast of.
- 2:20Tabernacles. This was one of three mandatory
- 2:24feasts where people from all. Over the region.
- 2:26Would come to the city of Jerusalem and at this point in
- 2:31jesus's ministry, some of. Those people that had travelled
- 2:34to be there at the temple to hear Jesus, we're.
- 2:37Beginning to believe that. In fact, this could be.
- 2:39The Messiah. This could be the one, the
- 2:41long-awaited one that we've been, we've been expecting and
- 2:45yet. There were the religious
- 2:46leaders, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the scribes.
- 2:51They refused to see that Jesus was the Messiah, it tells.
- 2:55Us in Chapter 7. One of the reasons is because he
- 2:58was from Galilee. He was a.
- 2:59Galilean. And they saw Galileans.
- 3:02A sort of backwoods Hicks. Uneducated kind of country
- 3:06bumpkins. That's how they picture.
- 3:09Jesus, that's how they wanted to try to represent.
- 3:11Jesus to the people. And it was creating all this
- 3:14conflict, all these. Debates.
- 3:16If you read through Chapter 7 you'll just see this.
- 3:18Anger and this hatred and it's heating up there kind of to a
- 3:22boiling point. As we wrap up chapter. 7.
- 3:25Particularly because the day before Jesus disrupted their.
- 3:29Feast with his preaching. He was in the temple.
- 3:33The scribes, the Pharisees, got very upset.
- 3:35At him. They felt like he was.
- 3:37Disrupting what they wanted him to do.
- 3:39And so they sent the temple. Police to arrest.
- 3:42Him to arrest him and in. Chapter 7.
- 3:45Verse 45. They're then asked.
- 3:47By the temple police as. They come back empty handed
- 3:51without Jesus. They ask him, why haven't you
- 3:54brought? Jesus.
- 3:54We asked. You to arrest him and it.
- 3:56Says that, they say we've. Never heard a man.
- 3:58Speak like this before. So.
- 4:01So there they are, going to arrest Jesus.
- 4:03And then they stop and they hear him preach, and their jaws are
- 4:06open. They've never.
- 4:07Heard this before. Powerful.
- 4:09He captured them, they were hanging on his words, and they
- 4:12come back without arresting him. And this is all happening here
- 4:17in the final six months of Jesus's life, as he is fixing
- 4:21his. Face towards the cross towards
- 4:24the whole. Reason that he came and now
- 4:27this, this drama and these debates, these arguments, these
- 4:32attempts to arrest Jesus. At one point, his life was even.
- 4:37They were attempting. To take him by stoning and this
- 4:40is all. Beginning to sort of heat up.
- 4:42Climb Acting. Of course, at the cross.
- 4:44And the pattern of. Jesus would be to teach.
- 4:47In the temple during the day. And then he would.
- 4:51Retire outside of the city. Later in the evening.
- 4:55And if you know anything about Jesus, you know one of his.
- 4:57Favorite places? Was the Mount of Olives and
- 5:01this. Is where Jesus would.
- 5:02Love to go and lay down under a tree and rest.
- 5:06This is where, by the way, the Bible.
- 5:07Tells us he's going to come again and he is going to land
- 5:10back on the Mount of Olives when he returns a second time one of
- 5:14his. Favorite places, of course.
- 5:16And it tells us here. In verse 3 early.
- 5:19In the morning, this was the next morning, now he came again
- 5:23into the temple, back into the precincts here, and all the
- 5:27people came to him. So evidently these crowds that
- 5:30had come for this. Feast were were still there.
- 5:33And it says that he sat down and he taught them.
- 5:38Now this. Is the third service of the day
- 5:40the. 4th service of the weekend. I've been standing this whole
- 5:43time. Typically what happens is in the
- 5:45Jewish. Culture, the rabbi would sit.
- 5:47And the congregation would stand.
- 5:49So could we try that for the rest of the message today?
- 5:51You guys all stand. Just kidding, but here's Jesus
- 5:57rising early in the morning to go again to the temple.
- 6:00To teach Jesus, by the way. We know this from studying his
- 6:03life. He's a morning person.
- 6:05None of us are. Because we're here at the 11:45
- 6:07service, but Jesus is tells us regularly he would get up to
- 6:11pray early. In the morning before his
- 6:13ministry and so. Here's Jesus he goes to.
- 6:16The temple he sits down to teach them and then verse 3, then the
- 6:20scribes and the. Pharisees brought.
- 6:23To him a woman notice caught in adultery, and when they had set
- 6:28her in the midst. The idea?
- 6:30Here is in the middle of the. Crowd that was there gathering.
- 6:33Around Jesus verse 4 they said to him, teacher, this woman was
- 6:38caught in adultery notice in the.
- 6:41Very act. This was probably the night
- 6:45before and they found her and they.
- 6:48Drug her here to Jesus. So if you're.
- 6:50Taking notes this morning, the first thing we want to jot down
- 6:54number one point #1 the weight of condemnation.
- 6:58The weight of condemnation. We're going to see this here in
- 7:01verses one through 6. Because the Jewish law very
- 7:05clearly. Stated you should not commit
- 7:08adultery. Leviticus, chapter 20, verse 10.
- 7:11Would say it this way. The man who commits adultery
- 7:14with another man's wife. He who commits adultery with his
- 7:18neighbor's wife. Notice this.
- 7:20The adulterer and the adulteress.
- 7:22Surely should be put to death. So this was a capital?
- 7:28Offense. In Israel, you committed
- 7:30adultery. It was worthy of.
- 7:32Death. And you may be asking.
- 7:34Well, why does it rise to that level of capital?
- 7:37Punishment. Well, the answer is.
- 7:39Because adultery would break up a relationship.
- 7:43Which would then destroy the the fabric of a family, which would
- 7:49in turn destroy and decimate the fabric.
- 7:52Of a society. And so adultery.
- 7:55Was, and it still is today, a very big.
- 7:58Deal Because of the incalculable damage that it causes.
- 8:03And some of us here, our lives have been touched by adultery.
- 8:07Maybe it was our mom or our dad. We had to live through that and.
- 8:12Maybe you were the one that committed adultery on your
- 8:17spouse, or maybe they were the one that committed.
- 8:20Adultery towards you, but it's. Painful, and some of you
- 8:23understand. That the fallout of that the way
- 8:27that it is. Damaging and here.
- 8:31These religious leaders describes the Pharisees.
- 8:34It tells us they show up. Dragging this woman to Jesus.
- 8:39But they were hypocrites. They were hypocrites because
- 8:43they are breaking the law here. And the reason why is because.
- 8:47The Jewish law stated there had to be a process.
- 8:50Behind this, you can't just catch somebody, put them in
- 8:53front of a crowd of people, and demand that that person would be
- 8:56stoned. No, the first.
- 8:57Step that the law told. Them they were supposed to.
- 8:59Do was. Would be to give the man or the
- 9:01woman a warning to warn them first.
- 9:04Then if it happened again with this particular woman, she
- 9:07should be tried in a court of law.
- 9:10And there were very specific, clearly defined stipulations in
- 9:14order for this even to go to court.
- 9:17So for example. There had to be.
- 9:19More than one 2-3 witnesses that had to not only see them leaving
- 9:24the same house together or even seeing them leave the same.
- 9:28Bedroom together, but they had to all.
- 9:30At the same time, catch this couple in the physical.
- 9:34Act. They would then be witnesses in
- 9:36a court of law and if there's any discrepancy in any of their
- 9:40testimonies, then the case would be thrown out.
- 9:43So it was very strict the way that they would this process
- 9:46would work out, but above the Jewish.
- 9:49Law, The Roman law. Stated that Jewish leaders.
- 9:52Couldn't even exercise the death sentence the Romans took.
- 9:56That right away. From them and that's why later
- 10:00on when. Jesus was arrested.
- 10:02The Jewish leaders had to go to Pilot to ask.
- 10:06Them the Romans to crucify Jesus because they didn't have the
- 10:09right to capital punishment and by.
- 10:11The way these religious leaders. They know all of this.
- 10:14They were very studied. In these things, but instead
- 10:17what they do. Is they they grab this.
- 10:19Woman, they drag her it. Says here that they put.
- 10:22Her in the midst of the crowd. They're interrupting.
- 10:25Jesus as he's there this. Morning teaching the woman, of
- 10:29course, no. Doubt is afraid.
- 10:31And I'm sure she's crying here and no doubt she's embarrassed.
- 10:36Because she is. Being publicly shamed in front
- 10:39of a group of strangers, just having her business put out
- 10:43there in front of everybody. By these religious leaders.
- 10:47And they knew that the. Default of Jesus was to forgive
- 10:52was to forgive. And let me just add something
- 10:54here to you this morning. Jesus would never embarrass.
- 10:59You the way that they. Are embarrassing this woman, I
- 11:02want you to know that. If you're caught.
- 11:04Up in sin. If you're feeling the shame of
- 11:06it this morning, he would never put you in the midst.
- 11:09Of a crowd. To make a public.
- 11:11Spectacle of you or to. Humiliate you.
- 11:14That is not the. Heart of Jesus.
- 11:17That might be the heart. Of some religious leaders,
- 11:19perhaps even still today. That's not the heart of.
- 11:22Jesus. But we have an enemy, our Satan,
- 11:26who very much would. Love for you to be.
- 11:28Stuck in this place of humiliation, feeling ashamed and
- 11:33condemned, and then just in. Despair over all of it.
- 11:37He would love for you to be stuck there.
- 11:40So here they set this woman in the midst of the crowd, and in
- 11:43verse 4 again it says they said to him Teacher.
- 11:48Again, they called him Teacher, but they really had no desire at
- 11:51all to be taught by him. Nonetheless, Teacher this woman
- 11:56was caught in adultery in the. Very act.
- 12:00And the Greek indicates she was in the act of committing.
- 12:04Adultery while they caught her while they caught her.
- 12:09And you may be thinking as I was thinking.
- 12:11OK, where's the dude? In this this picture right?
- 12:14Didn't we just read it's supposed to?
- 12:15Be the man and the woman that are supposed to be caught, and
- 12:18there's a lot of. Ideas of what?
- 12:19Happened to this guy, some said that when they went in to catch
- 12:22them he outran her and they caught her instead.
- 12:26Some people. Have said that perhaps this.
- 12:28Man. Was let go because.
- 12:31Women in this. Culture were treated as lesser.
- 12:34Than men. And so they caught her.
- 12:37Instead as the guilty party. But what?
- 12:39Most likely. Happened.
- 12:40Is this because they. Caught her in the act, in the
- 12:45act, this whole thing. Was probably a setup.
- 12:49It's probably a setup. Remember the day before chapter?
- 12:52Seven, they tried to arrest Jesus.
- 12:54They couldn't. So now they have another plan, a
- 12:58Plan B, another opportunity. And this particular opportunity
- 13:01now seems seamless, like we're we're going to get him at this
- 13:05time, scholars. Tell us that there were.
- 13:07Likely pre arranged. Spies that were at this.
- 13:10Location. His bedroom, Her bedroom,
- 13:13wherever. It was where she was caught.
- 13:16And the man with who? She was caught was likely part
- 13:19of the setup, is what scholars would tell.
- 13:22Us and and in that case they would have just let him go.
- 13:25So the. Spies that witnessed the event.
- 13:28It was a setup. The quick arrest, again without
- 13:32due. Process, but that was a setup
- 13:34dragging her to Jesus. In the most.
- 13:36Public way possible. And the most public place.
- 13:39Possible was also a setup. Interrupting his teaching.
- 13:44Moving. People out of the way to get to
- 13:46Jesus. All of this dramatic setup.
- 13:49She was just a. Pawn that they were using.
- 13:52To try to trap Jesus. We're going to see that they all
- 13:55they wanted was to accuse. Jesus, that was their goal.
- 13:58In all of this and yet here. She is, obviously, she's guilty.
- 14:04Carrying now this shame, publicly humiliated, And yet, I
- 14:09wonder in the midst. Of all of this, had she heard of
- 14:12Jesus? Because.
- 14:14His name was being mentioned. People were talking about him.
- 14:18Had she heard of his teaching that he had power not only to
- 14:22heal? Disease.
- 14:26But he also had the power to forgive.
- 14:28Sin and though. She was guilty.
- 14:32Of a serious crime, even caught in the act of it, and she had no
- 14:36one there to defend her. Would perhaps this Jesus?
- 14:42That everybody was talking about.
- 14:45Would. He be willing to forgive
- 14:47somebody like me? Like me, And maybe that's the
- 14:53question you're asking this morning.
- 14:54Would he be willing to forgive somebody like me?
- 15:01Well, these religious leaders. Continue verse 5.
- 15:04Now Moses in the Law commanded us that such should be stoned,
- 15:10and by the way, they. Were right.
- 15:11You can read that again. We read it together.
- 15:13Leviticus 20 verse 10. Deuteronomy 22 verse 22, then
- 15:18they. Ask Jesus.
- 15:19But what do you say, Jesus? Which, by the way, is a great.
- 15:24Question. What does?
- 15:26Jesus say, well, they're. About ready to find?
- 15:29Out what? Jesus.
- 15:30Is going to say and notice this verse. 5 here this they said.
- 15:35Testing him that they might have something.
- 15:38Of which to accuse? Him so.
- 15:42They were right. In the sense that she had broken
- 15:46the law. But their motives were wrong in
- 15:49all of this. They didn't care about the
- 15:51woman. They didn't.
- 15:53Care about the law. They didn't care about any kind
- 15:56of justice. They didn't care about this
- 15:58woman's husband. Wherever he is at this.
- 16:01Point. I don't even know if he knows
- 16:03what's going on. They simply wanted to set.
- 16:06Up a trap for Jesus. It was all about trying to
- 16:10accuse him. And by the way, they.
- 16:13Thought that they had. Him here, there.
- 16:16There could have been no other way around it.
- 16:19There are only one of two options.
- 16:20See, if Jesus recommended that this woman be released, then
- 16:25he'd be. Accused of breaking the law.
- 16:27Of Moses and he was He would discredit himself, his claim of
- 16:32being the Messiah. On the other hand, if Jesus
- 16:36recommended stoning this woman, then he would be guilty of
- 16:40breaking Roman law because again, they took capital
- 16:43punishment away from the Jewish. Leader, so he'd be.
- 16:47Accused of being in defiance of Rome.
- 16:50And he would be. Arrested is it?
- 16:53That's it. Those are the 2.
- 16:54Options they got them, and above that they wouldn't mind again if
- 16:59his reputation of forgiveness and his reputation of being a
- 17:02friend of sinners would be. Discredited.
- 17:04They'd be OK with that as well. So again, I'm sure they're
- 17:08thinking we caught them. Finally, this woman caught in
- 17:11the act. This is the perfect setup.
- 17:15And you can imagine, in this moment, the crowd in stunned
- 17:19silence. Imagine.
- 17:20Religious leaders drag. A woman in here this morning,
- 17:23what would we do? We'd be probably looking at this
- 17:27in silence. What's going on here?
- 17:28The disciples. Are off at a distance.
- 17:30They've never read this chapter. They're wondering what's about
- 17:33ready to go down the. Pharisees, of course, with
- 17:36their. Smug looks are looking down upon
- 17:39this woman. And then you have this woman.
- 17:44No. Doubt with her eyes.
- 17:46To the ground. Shame.
- 17:47Can't look at anybody overwhelmed wishing that.
- 17:52If she could just go back, she would do it all.
- 17:56Over again, she would never have.
- 17:59Caught eyes. With a man that she committed
- 18:02adultery with and she's feeling at this moment her.
- 18:05Life is over. Likely even.
- 18:06Within a matter of minutes, depending on Jesus's response,
- 18:09she's embarrassed because she's being drug right into the
- 18:12middle. Of all of these.
- 18:14Strangers, Can you imagine we? Put up all of your.
- 18:16Business on the screen there. How you would feel?
- 18:20Well, I imagine in the scene there's the bustling sounds of
- 18:23all the temple in the background, but here the crowd
- 18:28is silent. The accusers have made their
- 18:30points. The accusers.
- 18:33Have asked their question, this woman hearing only the sound of
- 18:37her pounding heart, and all eyes are on Jesus.
- 18:44So there's the weight of. Condemnation point number.
- 18:47Two, there is the. Response to condemnation, verses
- 18:516 through 9, the response to condemnation, and you could add
- 18:55there the Savior's response to condemnation continuing here in
- 19:00verse 6. It tells us this, but.
- 19:03Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger as
- 19:09though he did not hear. Now notice Jesus didn't respond
- 19:13to them. Verbally here, but he.
- 19:15Did something here physically. He stopped and he stooped and
- 19:21then he wrote in the dust and the dirt of the ground with his
- 19:24finger. And we all want to know, OK,
- 19:26what did he write down? What was it?
- 19:29And there's all kinds of. Speculation.
- 19:32You can grab a commentary on the book of John and they.
- 19:34Will give you all all ideas perhaps of what he was.
- 19:38Writing. But the reality is we just don't
- 19:40know because we're not told. We're not told.
- 19:42This is one of those questions, when you get to heaven, we can
- 19:44ask them. Jesus, what?
- 19:46What? What did you write?
- 19:47Very, very curious. What was that about?
- 19:50What we do know is this, when Jesus stooped down and when he.
- 19:54Started to write. It took.
- 19:55All of the attention off of the woman, that's what we know.
- 20:00He was lowering the temperature of that moment and he was easing
- 20:04her pain and I. Believe that was the whole.
- 20:07Point the whole point as one. Preacher said she was bowed.
- 20:12Down in humiliation and here is Jesus bowing down to her.
- 20:17Level he was low with her. He was identifying with her.
- 20:21He was drawing near to her in the midst of her humiliation.
- 20:26And my friends, I just want to say.
- 20:27To you today that he. Draws near to you, whatever you
- 20:31are carrying this morning as well.
- 20:34He bows down. He Stoops down and he.
- 20:39Sees you, He sees you. His word says when we pray, He
- 20:43bends and he inclines. His ear towards us.
- 20:47So he sees you this morning just as he sees this woman.
- 20:52And it tells us in verse 7 when they continued asking him, no
- 20:56doubt at this point they had these big stones in their hands
- 20:59ready to throw them at her. But it says he raised himself up
- 21:03and he said to them. He.
- 21:05Who is without sin among you? Let him throw a stone.
- 21:09At her first. Now they tried to ignore what
- 21:14Jesus was doing on the ground. Whatever was happening there,
- 21:17the language indicates that they keep on asking him.
- 21:20They keep pressing him to give an answer, because evidently
- 21:24they felt like his silence was just an attempt.
- 21:27To evade their question. And so they're pressing him even
- 21:29more. Jesus, stop stalling and answer
- 21:31us. What do you say?
- 21:33What? Are you going to do about this
- 21:34woman? Make it very clear, Jesus.
- 21:37Where you stand if you really are the Messiah.
- 21:40That you say you are. Stake your claim right here and
- 21:44right now. And as he stands, he simply asks
- 21:49them a question. He who is without.
- 21:53Sin among you, throw your first stone.
- 21:56Throw it, cast it. Without sin there, by the way,
- 22:00is the only time that that. Phrase is used.
- 22:03In the New Testament without sin and it doesn't mean perfect.
- 22:07He, he who is. Perfect.
- 22:09Throw the stone, because that would mean then that any of us
- 22:13that are, you know, that that are sinless.
- 22:15We're the only ones that can call sin.
- 22:17Out right if we're perfect. That's not what Jesus is saying.
- 22:21It means this. He who is without sin means let
- 22:23the person who has no guilt on their conscience at all throw
- 22:26the first stone. And again, what's remarkable?
- 22:30Here about Jesus is he didn't. Say that the woman didn't sin,
- 22:33right? Or he.
- 22:34Didn't say that her sin was no big.
- 22:36Deal. Or that he was.
- 22:38Denying her guilt because Jesus, more than anyone else, Jesus
- 22:42knew the legal penalty for adultery was stoning.
- 22:45He was aware of that. But he's making a greater point
- 22:48here. He knew.
- 22:50That the religious leaders were. Trying to trap him.
- 22:53That's what they were trying to accomplish here.
- 22:56And He was in turn taking the mirror that they were putting on
- 22:59the woman, and the mirror that they were putting on Jesus, and
- 23:02He was turning it and forcing them to.
- 23:04Look at themselves. Because he was.
- 23:06Causing them to examine. Who they were?
- 23:09In order to expose their motives that they weren't the ones to
- 23:14bring the charge against this woman, because their hands were
- 23:17unclean themselves. And in this, the genius of God,
- 23:23he foiled their plan to trap him.
- 23:28Verse 8 tells us. This and again he stooped down
- 23:32and wrote on the ground. And now for a second time.
- 23:34We don't know what he was writing, but this was now giving
- 23:37the. Religious accusers.
- 23:39A chance to drop their stones and to slink away.
- 23:45It tells us in verse 9. Then those who take note of
- 23:48this. Heard it.
- 23:50Being convicted by their conscience, it's interesting
- 23:53that the. Religious leaders who heard.
- 23:55What he said were convicted. It wasn't what he had written on
- 23:58the ground that had the greatest impact on them.
- 24:01It was Jesus's own words. And so it says, when they heard
- 24:06it being convicted by their conscience, they went out one by
- 24:09one, beginning with the oldest even to the last.
- 24:14So the. Elders among these religious
- 24:16leaders. Who would have lived the?
- 24:18Longest would have had the most since they were the ones that
- 24:22left. First, followed by the.
- 24:24Younger and the commentator DA Carson says those who had come
- 24:31to shame Jesus now leaves and shame themselves.
- 24:36The ones that have come to embarrass and humiliate this
- 24:39woman, they now leave humiliated and.
- 24:44It says here as it. Closes verse 9.
- 24:47Jesus was left. Alone and the woman standing in
- 24:51the midst. There's still people here,
- 24:55crowds still there, doesn't say they dispersed.
- 24:57She's still standing there in the midst of them, but the.
- 25:00Accusers dropped their. Stones.
- 25:04And they walked away and you can imagine because 1 moment there's
- 25:08all this intensity, they're raising their voice with their
- 25:12accusations. You've got the on looking crowd.
- 25:15And then a moment later here, everything is quiet.
- 25:18Everything's quiet. And there was.
- 25:20Jesus. And there was this accused
- 25:22woman, and you can picture all these stones that are on the
- 25:26ground around them, left unattended to.
- 25:30And you had the weight of condemnation.
- 25:33Then you had the response to condemnation.
- 25:36And then our last point #3 the final word to condemnation
- 25:41versus 10 and 11. The final word to condemnation.
- 25:45Because this woman's life is going to be transformed this
- 25:49very day in a wonderful way. Verse 10 When Jesus had raised
- 25:56himself up and saw no one but the woman, he said to her woman.
- 26:01Where are those accusers of yours?
- 26:03Has no one condemned you? Jesus stands up here for a
- 26:08second time, this time to talk directly to the woman.
- 26:13We haven't heard her speak yet. We've only heard her spoken
- 26:16about and it would appear that this is the first time that
- 26:20Jesus and this woman made eye contact.
- 26:24And Can you imagine what the? Face of Jesus looked like.
- 26:27When he looked into her face and he says woman.
- 26:30Where are these accusers of yours?
- 26:34Has no one condemned you now? He says woman to her.
- 26:40This was not derogatory as it may sound in our culture.
- 26:43You know, if I say woman to my wife, I'm going to be sleeping
- 26:45on the couch tonight that we we don't.
- 26:48Talk that way today. But the word woman, even in the
- 26:52language it indicates. It was with Sweet.
- 26:54Tenderness. It was a term of endearment.
- 26:59Jesus with Mary Magdalene said the same thing, woman.
- 27:03The woman at the well, he said the same thing.
- 27:05When Jesus was on the cross, he saw his mother out on the crowd
- 27:09and he said to her, woman, it's a term of endearment.
- 27:14But notice this, he says woman. Because he saw her.
- 27:19He saw her. Not the adulterous, not the
- 27:22guilty one, not the law breaker, but the woman.
- 27:27The woman who was once somebody's little girl that ran
- 27:29around the village. Somebody's.
- 27:32Little girl that probably baked. Bread with her mom And if they
- 27:34had? Dolls.
- 27:35They played with dolls. Together, and at some point she
- 27:38became a teenager, and at some point she met a man.
- 27:43She fell in love. And they were either betrothed.
- 27:46Or they got married here because the consequence would have been
- 27:48the same either way, but somewhere along the way.
- 27:52Through a series of. Circumstances.
- 27:54Her heart began to harden, much like some of us may be here
- 27:58today, and her walls went up and she gave herself to another man.
- 28:06But when? Jesus looks at her.
- 28:09He calls her a woman, calls her a woman.
- 28:11Woman. Where are those accusers of
- 28:14yours Has. No one condemned you and to
- 28:17condemn is a legal term which means to judge down because
- 28:22you've been guilty of a crime and this woman look into the.
- 28:26Face of Jesus. Responds in verse 11 and she
- 28:29says no one Lord, no one. She doesn't say, hey, I'm not
- 28:33guilty. Let me tell you what.
- 28:34Happened. Let me defend myself only.
- 28:38That her accusers who drug her out into the.
- 28:40Open were no longer there and then Jesus says five of the most
- 28:45comforting. Words a guilty soul could ever
- 28:49hear. Continuing verse 11.
- 28:51Jesus says to her neither. Do I condemn you?
- 28:57Neither do I condemn you. Now go and sin no more.
- 29:04Now he doesn't say. Take note.
- 29:06If you go and send no more, I won't condemn you.
- 29:10That's the way we. Often tend to read it because
- 29:12sometimes. That's the way we see.
- 29:13Jesus in our mind, as if. Jesus would say to her.
- 29:17I'm covering you today. But if you blow it.
- 29:19Again, you're going to be in bigger trouble.
- 29:21You messed up. You should be ashamed of
- 29:23yourself. Just be glad I'm letting you off
- 29:26now. Go and be perfect now.
- 29:28It's not what Jesus is saying. He didn't say go and sin no more
- 29:32and I won't condemn you. He says neither do I condemn
- 29:36you. Now go and sin no more.
- 29:40There is salvation first, then there's sanctification.
- 29:45Jesus doesn't clean his. Fish before he catches.
- 29:48Them. He.
- 29:49Catches them first and then does that work of cleaning them.
- 29:52So he's saying to her here, there is no condemnation from
- 29:56me, I'm not bringing judgement on you.
- 30:00You're forgiven. Your guilt is pardoned.
- 30:04You've been given another chance.
- 30:07And we need to be reminded of this this morning.
- 30:10That it is always. God's privilege and.
- 30:12God's delight to show. Grace to undeserving sinners.
- 30:16It's his privilege and it's. His delight to show grace.
- 30:21To you and to me. This is why Paul.
- 30:24Would say this and. The whole first chapter. 7
- 30:27chapters of of Romans. He would write about because of
- 30:31the fact. That we're sinners, we are under
- 30:33condemnation. And then he would talk about his
- 30:36experience trying to fight sin and experience many of you feel
- 30:38this morning in your life. He would say this that I do.
- 30:42The things I don't want to do and the things that I I should
- 30:45do, I don't do those things. And every time I want to do
- 30:48good, evil is right there with me.
- 30:50How many of you? Guys can relate to that struggle
- 30:52like oh Lord help. Me and then he.
- 30:55He. Feels the way that maybe.
- 30:56You feel here in Chapter 7 of Romans verse 24, oh wretched
- 31:00man, that I am like I am just the.
- 31:03Worst. I don't know what I'm going to
- 31:05do. I don't know how I'm going to
- 31:06overcome this. I don't even know.
- 31:08Lord, do you even love me anymore?
- 31:11Like what is going on? He says.
- 31:14And he asks who will deliver me from this?
- 31:17Body of death, he feels. That in himself wretched.
- 31:21Body of death. But then he answers his
- 31:25question. Romans 725I thank God through.
- 31:30Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 81 There is therefore now
- 31:35no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 31:39There's no condemnation because Jesus has taken.
- 31:43Care of that for you. For me, for this woman, he
- 31:47doesn't say. Paul there in Romans 8.
- 31:50Now try harder. Now do more.
- 31:53Now follow these 10 steps and be a better Christian.
- 31:55No, he says. There is therefore.
- 31:57Now, today, this moment, there is no condemnation if you are in
- 32:05Christ Jesus and listen often where we find ourselves when it
- 32:11comes to our walk with the. Lord is this.
- 32:13We know. That Jesus said there's no.
- 32:15Condemnation. But we still tell ourselves.
- 32:19That were condemned as if my word is greater than his word.
- 32:24Because I feel. Condemned.
- 32:25I must be condemned. But you know your feelings lie
- 32:29to you, right? Your feelings don't always tell
- 32:32you the. Truth.
- 32:33And Can you imagine what this woman felt when?
- 32:35She heard these words after. Being under heavy accusation and
- 32:40crushed underneath her own guilt.
- 32:42To hear Jesus say to. Her.
- 32:44Neither Do I condemn you? I wonder, in that moment, did
- 32:49she just break down and start crying with relief?
- 32:53Did she? Fall at the feet of Jesus, did
- 32:56she? Turn and just run away to get
- 32:58away. From the.
- 32:59Situation. We do know that there had to
- 33:02have been some faith on her part in order for Jesus to make this
- 33:06declaration. But as.
- 33:09This author Ken Guyer says of this scene here.
- 33:13He says her tears would. Come.
- 33:16But they would come later, perhaps even years later.
- 33:20As she would watch her. Husband go out the front door to
- 33:22work as she would. Say goodbye to her kids as they
- 33:27would leave. Over and over again she heard
- 33:30his voice. Neither do I condemn you.
- 33:33Now go and sin no more. Don't live this way anymore.
- 33:38In Jesus's statement there, He's not excusing her sin as a
- 33:43matter. Of fact, what she.
- 33:44Doesn't know what the crowd didn't know as that he was on
- 33:48his. Way to pay for her.
- 33:50Sin with his own. Blood.
- 33:53He had his face fixed towards the cross.
- 33:56And with the cross in. View he was able to.
- 33:59Pronounce that there was no condemnation, knowing that her
- 34:02sin would be nailed to the. Cross.
- 34:05He didn't dismiss her sin. He knew he was going to die for
- 34:09her sin. That was what he was going to
- 34:12accomplish and the. Reason why it tells.
- 34:14US in John 317 For God did not send his Son into the world to
- 34:19condemn the world. Do you hear that he?
- 34:22Has not come to condemn you. But that the world through.
- 34:26Him might be saved. What grace and what mercy
- 34:33because of our loving Savior. He knows every sin of yours.
- 34:39He knows every motive, he knows every bad thought and he says to
- 34:44you and I today, I don't condemn you, I don't condemn you, I
- 34:52don't judge down on you as. If you're guilty.
- 34:56Now go and sin no more. So listen if you're.
- 34:59Here with a heavy heart because it's been weighed.
- 35:02Down with sin and with guilt. You can come to Jesus today and.
- 35:07Hear these words for yourself. He is the same yesterday, today
- 35:11and forever. And that's.
- 35:12All he asks of you, you. Provide the Sinner, He provides
- 35:18the Savior. You might say, oh, but I'm a
- 35:21great Sinner. I would say to you he's a
- 35:24greater savior. You might say, but you don't
- 35:27know what I've done or what I've given into.
- 35:29Or the people that. I've heard or the embarrassing,
- 35:31shameful things that I've been a part of.
- 35:33Well then you are the perfect candidate.
- 35:35For a savior. You're the perfect one.
- 35:39Listen, some of you may feel today like, well, I'd let God
- 35:42down and I feel like I'm more of a liability.
- 35:45But listen, He knows. All about what you've.
- 35:48Done. And when he went to.
- 35:50The Cross. The Bible.
- 35:52Says he made a statement there. Paid in full, all of it.
- 35:57He doesn't take a mortgage out on you and make monthly payments
- 36:01on you. He paid once and.
- 36:03For all for all. Of your sins.
- 36:12And that is our story, isn't it? And then he tells this woman.
- 36:16Now go and sin no more sin no more.
- 36:19The tense here is go and continue in a life of sin no
- 36:23longer. It wasn't that she wasn't going
- 36:24to sin anymore, but don't continue in this don't live this
- 36:27way anymore. He didn't condemn her, but he
- 36:32didn't condone her sin either. What he?
- 36:34Did is he freed her to live a life without?
- 36:38Sin. Just like Paul would say.
- 36:40Romans 8, Romans 6 verses one and two.
- 36:43What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that
- 36:46grace may abound? Certainly not.
- 36:49How shall we and I love this? How shall we who?
- 36:51Died to sin. Live any longer in it.
- 36:55See, Jesus doesn't just. Free us from the penalty of sin.
- 36:59He frees us from the power of sin.
- 37:03After Paul's great. Declaration of no condemnation
- 37:05in Romans 81. He says here in Romans 8 verses
- 37:082 and 3. For the law of the Spirit.
- 37:10Of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and
- 37:14death, for what the law could not do in that it was weak.
- 37:17Through the flesh God did. By sending His own Son in the
- 37:21likeness of sinful flesh on account of sin.
- 37:24Notice He condemned sin in the flesh.
- 37:27He doesn't condemn you the Sinner, He condemns the sin.
- 37:31And no condemnation in Jesus also means no power in that sin
- 37:37anymore. So you are free.
- 37:40You are free to walk. Away from it.
- 37:41Today because you have a. Person living inside.
- 37:45Of you believer the Bible. Says that when you put your
- 37:48faith and trust in Jesus, you may have not have known this was
- 37:51happening, but you were in. Dwelt with the Holy.
- 37:54Spirit of God Himself. So because he is.
- 37:56Living in you, you have everything you need.
- 38:01You can go and send no more not by your resolve and by your.
- 38:06Effort. But by your relationship with
- 38:09him. He will help you, you just have
- 38:13to draw close. To him, in the scene here, John
- 38:17chapter 8 ends with no stones, with no accusations, with no
- 38:24condemnation. Just a savior.
- 38:28And a Sinner. And at the end of the day,
- 38:31that's my story too. And many people in this.
- 38:35Place right just a savior. And a Sinner.
- 38:37And yet he changes. All of our lives.
- 38:40And he sets us free. He sets us free people here.
- 38:45Have been freed from addiction people here have been freed from
- 38:49the pain and the trauma of. Abuse people.
- 38:53Whose marriages were on the end of collapse.
- 38:56Have seen Jesus step in and save their marriages.
- 39:00It would have been enough. If Jesus just saved.
- 39:03Me, that would have been enough, but on.
- 39:06Top of that he restores. And he redeems and he takes
- 39:10things that are broken, and he is in the business of fixing
- 39:14broken things, fixing broken people, and condemnation.
- 39:19Well, the reason? We can say that's done is.
- 39:20Because it was dealt. With on the.
- 39:22Cross of Jesus Christ. Listen, Peter says he.
- 39:25Bore our. Sin upon the tree upon the
- 39:28cross, and He became our propitiation, which means He.
- 39:32Satisfied the wrath of God. On our behalf in regards to you
- 39:36and I and our sin. Christ bore our sin on the
- 39:40cross, and the fullness of God's condemnation was measured out
- 39:45and there's nothing. Left of it today.
- 39:48It was all placed on the cross the.
- 39:50Condemnation of Almighty God was spent on Christ on the cross.
- 39:55That's why there's no condemnation left to be measured
- 39:58out to you and me, because we are in Christ.
- 40:01He paid the price. In full.
- 40:05And as the worship team comes back up, I just want to remind
- 40:10you here. Today of what the cross of Jesus
- 40:13Christ would say to you. No matter who you are, no matter
- 40:19what you've done. The Cross would speak this.
- 40:22Over your life, God is for you. He's not against you.
- 40:28God loves you. He doesn't hate you.
- 40:32Your sin is not too great. His grace is greater still God.
- 40:38Hasn't forgotten you. He is seeking you.
- 40:45The doors not closed. The way is open for you to be
- 40:48forgiven and saved and free. Now, listen, if you're here this
- 40:54morning and you don't know Christ and you don't know this
- 40:58forgiveness, and if you were to die tonight, you wouldn't know
- 41:02whether or not you would spend eternity with him, I want to
- 41:06give you an invitation, as we do at the end of our messages so
- 41:10often. Listen, church won't do anything
- 41:13for you. We're so glad you're here.
- 41:16A Calvary church. Didn't die on the cross for you.
- 41:19Religious organizations won't do anything for you.
- 41:23If you. Recognize today that you've had
- 41:26enough and you're like, well, I'm the first one to admit I'm
- 41:31broken. No one needs to convince me that
- 41:34I'm a Sinner. I I know that.
- 41:35Already. And if you want to hear these
- 41:38words said to you from Jesus, neither do I condemn you, then I
- 41:43want to ask you to stand here publicly.
- 41:47So that we can pray for you. If you want to give your heart
- 41:50and your life. To Jesus Christ.
- 41:52In this place this morning if you want to know.
- 41:55That you are saved. There's a moment in time that
- 41:57he's giving you. The Bible says today is the day.
- 42:01Of salvation and again I want to ask you to stand and receive
- 42:04Jesus and his forgiveness and eternal life.
- 42:09You may be hesitant to stand because you may be thinking no
- 42:12one. Has ever loved.
- 42:13Me like this before no one you may find it.
- 42:18Even hard to believe. The kind of forgiveness that is
- 42:21being held out in front of you this morning.
- 42:25But I come to tell you today that he.
- 42:27Does love you that he does love you, Jesus the God.
- 42:31Man fully God, fully man. Lived a perfect life.
- 42:36Went to the. Cross bled his life.
- 42:38Into the ground for you. He breathed his last breath.
- 42:43He was buried, the Bible tells us.
- 42:46Three days later, he rose. Again from the dead proving to.
- 42:50You that he has the power to say to you.
- 42:54There's no condemnation. Your sins are forgiven.
- 42:58Also, I have the power to raise you up.
- 43:00There is a life. Beyond the grave.
- 43:04So is there anybody? Here Is there anybody here?
- 43:07That would like to stand make a public profession of faith in.
- 43:11Jesus Christ, this Jesus, this Jesus that we've just read
- 43:16about, this Jesus that would speak a greater word over your
- 43:19life. Amen.
- 43:21This Jesus you. May have a lot of.
- 43:22Labels over your life? Failure.
- 43:26Adulterous, perhaps? Sinner, maybe mom and dad called
- 43:32you things. It still to this day hurts you.
- 43:35Maybe people have labeled. You something your entire life.
- 43:37Well, there is a greater label over your life that God would
- 43:41say to you. It is loved.
- 43:43And he wants to forgive you, and he wants to set.
- 43:46You free. And he wants to look into.
- 43:49Your face, as he said. As he did the woman here and say
- 43:52to you, my daughter, my son, neither do I condemn you, and I
- 43:57will set you. Free to go.
- 43:59And sin no more. Well, praise the Lord.
- 44:05There's a number of people standing in this place.
- 44:16Anyone else? Today's the day of.
- 44:20Salvation, the Bible says. We don't know if we have
- 44:22tomorrow. This may be the opportunity.
- 44:24That God is. Giving to you, and it's very
- 44:28simple if you confess with your mouth the Lord.
- 44:30Jesus. And you believe in your heart
- 44:32that God raised him from the dead.
- 44:33You will be saved. You will be saved.
- 44:39And that was sealed in his blood.
- 44:42By the way. You're in a room full of people
- 44:44that experience. What you're about ready to.
- 44:47Experience right now. We.
- 44:49All acknowledge that we were sinners, and at some point in
- 44:52time we encounter Jesus ourself and we.
- 44:55Are here to say to. You, you are amongst family,
- 44:57you're amongst family. So if you would just in your
- 45:05heart repeat after me, Lord. Jesus, I do I, I believe.
- 45:11I'm a Sinner. I I felt the weight.
- 45:15Of condemnation in my own life, but when I.
- 45:19Look at the response. Of the Savior to me, when I hear
- 45:24that final word to condemnation spoken over my life, that
- 45:27there's no condemnation in Jesus, I put my faith.
- 45:32There. I put my faith on the one who
- 45:35hung on the cross for me to die. For me to pay the.
- 45:38Price for my sin. And he rose again from the dead,
- 45:43proving only he. Has the power to forgive.
- 45:47Sin only he the sinless one could say to me.
- 45:51I took. Care of it on your behalf.
- 45:54So Jesus today I believe. That you're my savior.
- 45:59I put my faith and my trust in you.
- 46:02I ask. You to be the.
- 46:02Lord of my life and I thank you for heaven, I thank you for
- 46:08forgiveness, and I thank you for life beyond the grave.
- 46:12In Jesus name, Amen. Amen.
