- 0:00Kathie: So I have to tell you.
- 0:00Kathie: Over the weekend.
- 0:01Kathie: I was watching professional football.
- 0:04Kathie: And you know me, I love me some sports psychology.
- 0:07Kathie: And the announcer was talking about Jim Harbaugh.
- 0:11Kathie: He is the coach of the.
- 0:13Kathie: I don't want to say San Diego chargers, but now they're the Los Angeles chargers.
- 0:18Kathie: Yeah.
- 0:20Kathie: Anyways, I was listening to them talk about how he transforms teams and how he's brought the chargers from where they were in a bad place to a really good place they're doing really well.
- 0:35Kathie: And they said something that totally captured by attention.
- 0:40Kathie: I mean, it was just like, Oh, my God.
- 0:42Kathie: I got to listen to this.
- 0:43Kathie: And they said the reason that he transforms teams, the way he does, has to do with the way he builds culture, the team culture specifically.
- 0:56Kathie: This.
- 0:57Kathie: I geek out on this, because this is corporate wellness to a T and this is how you build healthy teams.
- 1:06Kathie: And today we're going to talk about his strategies.
- 1:09Kathie: What this coach does and how he's transformed teams over the years.
- 1:14Kathie: To make them championship teams.
- 1:16Kathie: And that's what we want.
- 1:17Kathie: We want a team that works together very cohesively.
- 1:21Kathie: And if you think about it in professional football, this can be a challenge because you have so many diva athletes, especially on the professional level where they're like, I don't have to do this.
- 1:34Kathie: And Jim Harbaugh doesn't tolerate that diva stuff.
- 1:38Kathie: And actually he builds it in a healthy way.
- 1:43Kathie: Let's talk about it.
- 1:44Kathie: You're listening to Kathie's coaching podcast.
- 1:46Kathie: I'm your host, Kathie Owen.
- 1:48Kathie: So Jim Harbaugh.
- 1:51Kathie: Has transformed teams that were struggling.
- 1:55Kathie: And he took him to a place of championship, San Francisco 49ers for a championship.
- 2:00Kathie: And 2023, he took the university of Michigan to the championship.
- 2:05Kathie: And that's what he's most famous for as of recently, however, he's also transformed the chargers into a team that is highly.
- 2:18Kathie: Highly.
- 2:19Kathie: Top-notch.
- 2:21Kathie: And these coaching strategies.
- 2:24Kathie: Can really relate to high performing teams in the corporate world.
- 2:28Kathie: And that's what I really want to talk about because first of all, I geek out about sports psychology.
- 2:35Kathie: And second of all, I geek out about healthy, happy teams and a great workplace culture.
- 2:41Kathie: And we can all learn from this.
- 2:43Kathie: Even if you're an individual who follows me for my coaching, we can all learn from this.
- 2:50Kathie: First step accountability.
- 2:53Kathie: Jim Harbaugh holds every player accountable.
- 2:57Kathie: Regardless of his status, regardless of his tenure.
- 3:01Kathie: Regardless of his performance.
- 3:06Kathie: He treats the veteran the same as the rookie.
- 3:09Kathie: This is a profound thing to think about because it does transform your workplace culture.
- 3:17Kathie: And here's how you can apply this today.
- 3:20Kathie: Number one set clear expectations for your entire team.
- 3:25Kathie: From the rookie to the veteran.
- 3:28Kathie: In the workplace.
- 3:29Kathie: Accountability builds trust number one.
- 3:33Kathie: And it also drives success of your team.
- 3:37Kathie: Let me explain number one, you want to set clear expectations.
- 3:42Kathie: Number two, you want to create a feedback loop.
- 3:46Kathie: Where employees feel safe to express what they're feeling.
- 3:51Kathie: This is done through assessments.
- 3:53Kathie: Yes.
- 3:55Kathie: That is one of the first things I do whenever I get inside a corporate culture, because you want to know what's going on inside there.
- 4:03Kathie: You want to create that feedback loop.
- 4:06Kathie: So the feedback loop builds trust because you're listening to your employees and you're also understanding what they want and what they need.
- 4:15Kathie: And number three, when you have accountability, you celebrate those who take ownership of their successes.
- 4:24Kathie: And their failures.
- 4:26Kathie: This is important.
- 4:28Kathie: Because when you celebrate their successes and you also celebrate their admission of failures.
- 4:35Kathie: You're building trust.
- 4:37Kathie: It helps the team come together and it also helps build the team as better.
- 4:43Kathie: Think about it in football.
- 4:46Kathie: You're going to have somebody who messes up.
- 4:48Kathie: We all make mistakes.
- 4:50Kathie: We're human.
- 4:51Kathie: Even professional athletes are human.
- 4:53Kathie: They mess up.
- 4:54Kathie: He missed the field goal, an important field goal.
- 4:57Kathie: But we still celebrate the fact that, Hey, I missed the field goal, but I'm going to work on practice and get better or make it better next time.
- 5:07Kathie: But that is part of building a healthy team is celebrating those who take ownership of their wins.
- 5:15Kathie: And their struggles.
- 5:17Kathie: So you want to think of accountability as the foundation of what's going on inside your company.
- 5:25Kathie: Accountability.
- 5:27Kathie: Is like.
- 5:28Kathie: The flour in the cake mix that has all different kinds of ingredients to make a wonderful cake.
- 5:35Kathie: Now let's talk about team unity.
- 5:38Kathie: Harbough talks about team workouts.
- 5:41Kathie: He doesn't let the vetern go workout on his own in his own space.
- 5:45Kathie: He lets the whole team workout together.
- 5:49Kathie: What does this do?
- 5:50Kathie: This builds team comradery.
- 5:53Kathie: But it also helps your team develop skills that the veteran can teach the rookie.
- 6:00Kathie: And the rookie can teach the veteran and it keeps everybody on the same page.
- 6:05Kathie: In the corporate world, this might look like collaborative projects or team building experiences.
- 6:13Kathie: That's what that could look like.
- 6:15Kathie: Because a team building experience will take the veteran and the rookie and help them see how this can compliment this.
- 6:24Kathie: And this can compliment this and this can build the team.
- 6:28Kathie: On a same page level, building a healthy culture.
- 6:33Kathie: Remember the best teams don't just work together they care about each other.
- 6:37Kathie: And when employees feel connected, they're more likely to be engaged.
- 6:42Kathie: And bring their best selves to work.
- 6:45Kathie: So another thing that Jim Harbaugh is known for is building resilience.
- 6:51Kathie: And he's a hard nose coach.
- 6:52Kathie: That's kind of something he's known for is how hard he can be on his team and how he builds the resilience.
- 7:00Kathie: And there's a balance there that we're going to talk about in just a minute.
- 7:02Kathie: But this hard nose nature is like the secret spice in the cake that we're making.
- 7:09Kathie: It's the secret spice.
- 7:11Kathie: It stays in there and it makes it have a different flavor.
- 7:16Kathie: It makes it look different.
- 7:17Kathie: It makes it taste different.
- 7:19Kathie: This means teaching resilience and mental toughness to tackle those challenges.
- 7:26Kathie: Head on.
- 7:27Kathie: Just tackle them.
- 7:28Kathie: You're not afraid because your resilience, you have that courage.
- 7:32Kathie: You can build resilience with your team by encouraging your employees to see challenges as opportunities, because really, and truly when it comes down to it, that's all they are.
- 7:44Kathie: And there are opportunities to innovate and grow.
- 7:48Kathie: And this sets high standards, but we always want to balance them with empathy and support and team support.
- 7:56Kathie: Which brings me to the next one, which is values and purpose.
- 8:01Kathie: Jim Harbaugh's known for converting several players.
- 8:07Kathie: In fact, he had this thing I Michigan.
- 8:10Kathie: Where he had 70 players.
- 8:13Kathie: Be baptized.
- 8:15Kathie: This was a value he instilled in the team.
- 8:19Kathie: And it was a value that wasn't just a word on a board.
- 8:23Kathie: It was a value that he carried himself.
- 8:28Kathie: He showed the team that he had that.
- 8:30Kathie: And then he gave them opportunities to build on that value, which created purpose and team cohesion.
- 8:38Kathie: So the players are not just growing as a team they're growing as individuals, which makes the team better.
- 8:45Kathie: Similarly, great companies connect to their employees by instilling these values in their team and helping them grow individually and not just as a team.
- 8:59Kathie: Or not just as favorite employees.
- 9:03Kathie: On the board.
- 9:04Kathie: So we wanted to find our core values as a company.
- 9:08Kathie: And the core values are not just words on a board.
- 9:11Kathie: Simon Sineck will tell you that they need to be action.
- 9:14Kathie: For example.
- 9:15Kathie: If you have a gym at work, it doesn't mean everybody's going to have energy.
- 9:20Kathie: You have to have that value yourself.
- 9:23Kathie: You have to practice that yourself as the CEO and set an example.
- 9:28Kathie: Or these values guide everybody's decisions.
- 9:33Kathie: Look at look at Jim Harbaugh.
- 9:35Kathie: He valued.
- 9:36Kathie: His faith.
- 9:38Kathie: And he instilled that in his team.
- 9:40Kathie: And when he instilled that in his team, he started growing the individuals.
- 9:44Kathie: So when you value things like leadership and growth and development, these things will start to show up by you putting that into the workplace.
- 9:56Kathie: Giving your employees a chance to join or not join it's up to them, but they will grow as individuals.
- 10:05Kathie: And this has a ripple effect and you know, me, I love me some ripple effect where it just keeps going and going and going.
- 10:12Kathie: And then when employees feel aligned to the mission and the values.
- 10:17Kathie: Engagement grows.
- 10:19Kathie: And engagement grows.
- 10:20Kathie: Look at that.
- 10:21Kathie: 70 of the football players actually got baptized because of this leader's values and then the players wanted to be like that too.
- 10:33Kathie: Which leads me to the next thing that he did.
- 10:36Kathie: He did a legacy and culture building.
- 10:39Kathie: That's what the announcer specifically said.
- 10:42Kathie: He was known for building a great culture and he's left a legacy.
- 10:46Kathie: Look at the San Francisco 49ers.
- 10:48Kathie: He had that legacy there.
- 10:50Kathie: He won the super bowl.
- 10:51Kathie: Look at Michigan, the university of Michigan won the national championship in 2023.
- 10:57Kathie: That was 10 years after the 49ers.
- 10:59Kathie: Did it.
- 11:00Kathie: And then now he's with the chargers and who knows what that's going to happen, but he has already turned that team around.
- 11:06Kathie: So he's leaving a legacy behind.
- 11:09Kathie: That builds an awesome culture, which is exactly what the announcer said, but let's talk about this.
- 11:15Kathie: So you want to intentionally build a culture that endures time.
- 11:21Kathie: Document your values.
- 11:23Kathie: Don't just put them as words on a board.
- 11:25Kathie: Live them, live them as an example.
- 11:29Kathie: And invest in leadership development.
- 11:31Kathie: This is crucial.
- 11:33Kathie: I have seen companies fall apart and actually the number one reason an employee leaves a company is because of poor leadership.
- 11:43Kathie: And this is a simple fix.
- 11:44Kathie: It's a simple fixed by incorporating leadership development and understanding with your assessments, your anonymous assessments, the feedback loop, where you're having issues.
- 11:56Kathie: Issues inside the leadership, because a simple assessment understanding how the team feels, whether their leader is actually kind to them.
- 12:06Kathie: Understanding.
- 12:09Kathie: Helpful are they micro-managing?
- 12:12Kathie: Are they.
- 12:14Kathie: Insulting them, are they making them feel less worthy?
- 12:18Kathie: Because what's going to happen is you're going to end up with quiet, quitting, or you're going to end up with losing top talent.
- 12:24Kathie: And when you invest in leadership development, which can be as simple as a leadership workshop, as simple as that feedback loop, Hey, we're getting this feedback on you as a manager, you're micromanaging your team.
- 12:37Kathie: How can we work on that?
- 12:39Kathie: How can we start to see, oh, this leader could help instead of hurt the team.
- 12:45Kathie: That's leaving a legacy where your employees feel loved and cared for, instead of just words on the board, in the value definition.
- 12:54Kathie: So we're defining our values, but actually taking action and caring about our team and building that trust.
- 13:02Kathie: I want you to remember this.
- 13:05Kathie: A strong culture isn't just to strategy it's the company's identity.
- 13:11Kathie: It is the legacy that you are leaving behind.
- 13:17Kathie: What do you want that to be?
- 13:18Kathie: Do you want that to be one where you have an identity like Jim Harbaugh?
- 13:23Kathie: Oh my gosh.
- 13:24Kathie: Great team.
- 13:25Kathie: Great culture.
- 13:25Kathie: He builds a great culture.
- 13:28Kathie: That's what makes him successful?
- 13:31Kathie: That's what makes people want to emulate him?
- 13:34Kathie: That's what makes the players, even the diva players, what to play better because they want.
- 13:42Kathie: To be a part of that legacy.
- 13:45Kathie: So like baking the perfect cake.
- 13:47Kathie: Creating a winning culture takes effort.
- 13:50Kathie: Intention.
- 13:51Kathie: And the right mix of ingredients.
- 13:53Kathie: Remember that spice?
- 13:55Kathie: Yeah.
- 13:55Kathie: You even want that little spice in there?
- 13:57Kathie: Whether you're leading a football team or you're leading a corporate environment.
- 14:02Kathie: The principles are the same.
- 14:05Kathie: So you ready to channel your inner Harbaugh?
