- 0:21the bench.
- 0:26Speaker 2: All right, A welcome back, he and OTV one O
- 0:29four five ESPN Baton Rouge. You're on this Tuesday morning.
- 0:32It's Tuesday at nine am, so you know what that means.
- 0:35Gonna catch up now with our guy Nick Underhill, New
- 0:38Orleans Dot Football.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Nick, what is going on? Sir? How you doing?
- 0:42Speaker 4: Not much? I got a tribute question for you guys,
- 0:45and I'm it's not on the show today.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Matt here, I mean he is official, all right.
- 0:50Speaker 4: So the Saints do not have a quarterback on their
- 0:53roster that has won a game. They do not have
- 0:56a coach on their roster that has won a game.
- 0:58Doug dus Smeyer, hell of Moore, Scott Bus. They have
- 1:02one tie though, between the whole group, four quarterbacks, three coaches.
- 1:07Do you know how that how that game ended in
- 1:09a tie? Any anybody there?
- 1:11Speaker 2: They've had so they've had they've had a tie, but
- 1:16they have not had a win, which, by the way, Nick,
- 1:18that's a fascinating stat.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Oh my god, I'm all right. So of the names
- 1:23that you just threw out there, I know who is.
- 1:25Speaker 2: So Scott Tolzen was my teammate and Flynn's teammate.
- 1:29Speaker 3: So Flynn, I'm gonna I'm gonna phone a friend here.
- 1:32Speaker 5: So you're saying they haven't had a win as a quarterback.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Right in the league, but they've had a tie.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it's an easy one. Twenty thirteen Packers versus Vikings.
- 1:42Scott told they started played the first half. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:48it was it twenty to seven. I don't even know.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it was twenty to seven.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Yeah. Then I came in in the second half and
- 1:55we came back. This is Christian Ponder was the quarterback
- 1:59for the Biker. He comes in the game and yeah,
- 2:01we we go back and we tie him. We go
- 2:03to overtime and yeah, then we just wait we Pillow fied,
- 2:06why did you not start the game? I just got back.
- 2:10I was Oakland, went to Buffalo and then they assigned me.
- 2:13So that was Seneca Wallace started for Aaron after he
- 2:15got hurt. And then Scott. Yeah, Scott actually so Tolsine
- 2:21had like one of the sickest spin moves for a
- 2:23touchdown as a quarterback you've ever seen in that game.
- 2:26And so we tied the game, and a meet Christian
- 2:28Ponder in the middle of the field and we look
- 2:30at each other and we're like, I guess we tied.
- 2:35All right, good game? I think I don't know.
- 2:38Speaker 3: What a poll though?
- 2:39Speaker 5: What all?
- 2:40Speaker 3: That's fascinating.
- 2:41Speaker 2: They don't have a win, but the fact that you
- 2:42pulled a Scott Tolzen started a game that ended in
- 2:46a tie. There, So great trivia question, maybe a little
- 2:50worry some slash troublesome for the Saints movie.
- 2:53Speaker 4: For it's kind of impossible to have like four quarterbacks
- 2:57on the league. I mean, they got Taysoon, who has seven,
- 3:02but he's not really a quarterback anymore. So it's just
- 3:04kind of it's like an unbelievable circumstance. I think the
- 3:06brain power in the building is unbelievable, and it's just
- 3:09kind of weird that, like they got one tie. It's
- 3:12a Matt Flynn colog.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Let's go six degrees of Matt Flynn six degrees.
- 3:19Speaker 5: I guess that's like, let me follow up on that.
- 3:22So Scott Tolzen, quarterback coach for for the Saints this
- 3:25year has had really cool career, has been with kind
- 3:29of the Mike McCarthy coaching tree, of course, with the
- 3:32relationship in Green Bay playing for Mike and then in
- 3:34Dallas and and so have you been able to interact
- 3:38to seeing the interaction like what have you heard coming
- 3:40out of him? Because he's got a big job this year.
- 3:42Of course everybody that you just listed head coach, OC
- 3:46and quarterback, but Scott Tolsen is going to be the
- 3:49guy with these guys every single minute of every single day,
- 3:51breaking down every single practice film and the first line
- 3:55of coaching these guys. So have you will give me
- 3:58your opinion on him and what you've seen so far?
- 4:01Speaker 4: Yeah, he looks scir so far. I mean it's kind
- 4:04of refreshing a little bit to be around him to
- 4:06like it's just been kind of like a weird this
- 4:10quarterback setup, like just just the whole offense in general,
- 4:13I don't know, like just these guys as a group
- 4:15from top to bottom, just like the intellectual curiosity, the
- 4:18way they talk about the game, the way they approach things,
- 4:22kind of seeing like a a like refreshing, interactive approach.
- 4:25Maybe maybe a younger approach to kind of coaching. I
- 4:29don't know if that makes sense, but it was kind
- 4:30of more like stuffy. The last couple of years, Kubak
- 4:33offense changed a little bit, and Janoko we've seen some
- 4:36of that, But I don't know Tod. He just he
- 4:38has the experience. He speaks from that place. He kind
- 4:40of leads the group in a a in a way
- 4:43that you kind of just see it a little bit.
- 4:46For us, it's the most evasive interview of all time.
- 4:50It got canceled like three times. He eventually talked to us.
- 4:52But yeah, I just think he's I think he's smart,
- 4:55and I think he sees the game the right way,
- 4:57and I think these guys are responding to it right
- 4:59now to and just the speed that we're seeing Tyler
- 5:02Shuck develop with. Like you know, obviously he comes in,
- 5:04he's an older, older player, twenty six. Its gonna be
- 5:07twenty six, you know, you kind of expect that a
- 5:10little bit. But like the growth, practice to practice, Like
- 5:13you know, I've been around some some of these guys
- 5:15coming in. I was in New England when Bryan Mallett
- 5:17was there. Jimmy Garoppolo, Garrett Grayce is down here. Just
- 5:21don't Jakyne or Spencer Ratlery going down the list like
- 5:24like Shucks Like practice to practice improvement, I think is
- 5:28something that kind of stands out right now and some
- 5:31of the stuff, you know, I'm here from the players
- 5:33out there. The last practice last week they did red
- 5:35zone and like they're saying that was the best practice
- 5:37he's had so far. They said he lit it up.
- 5:40You know, players are like excited about him, and you know,
- 5:43I just think, you know, the first time we went
- 5:45out there, it looked like stuff was happening kind of
- 5:47like really slow for Shuck, And again, I think you
- 5:50kind of expect that first oka practicing. I guess it
- 5:53was his third, but you know, by the time we
- 5:55go out there, it's practice six for him the second time,
- 5:57and you see the improvement and then you know you're
- 5:59here and that there's more happening behind the scenes, and
- 6:02I think they just kind of probably speaks to the
- 6:04quality of the coaching and how they're bringing them along
- 6:06and you know, breaking it down, and you know, tol
- 6:09Zine is obviously at the forefront of that, and I
- 6:12think he's a really interesting guy too, because you know,
- 6:14if they have a good offensive staff, like that's the
- 6:16position that's probably the launch pad on this staff for
- 6:19someone to go on and move on. I don't I
- 6:21don't really see nuts Meyer. I don't know. I think
- 6:23he's probably gonna, you know, stay in his role, but
- 6:26but that could be a good, you know, a good
- 6:28launching spot if if they do have success here. So
- 6:31I think he's kind of like, you know, outside of
- 6:33the Collen Moore and Saley, I think he's kind of
- 6:35the most interesting guy on the staff right now.
- 6:37Speaker 5: Yeah, it's kind of cool. When you said that, it
- 6:40was refreshing to see the coaches kind of talking ball
- 6:43like what will work, trying to build and create this
- 6:46offense based on what they're seeing. They What you don't
- 6:48want is a coach set in his ways being like, no,
- 6:52this is how we're gonna do it.
- 6:53Speaker 3: I don't care the skill set.
- 6:54Speaker 5: So like to me, Saints fans, that's something that's really
- 6:57refreshing and like cool to look at, especially with two
- 7:00young quarterbacks, which brings me to my next question. Like,
- 7:04I've always thought that the progression in the jump from
- 7:08year one to year two for a quarterback was the
- 7:10most important in the career. So you got to guy
- 7:14Spencer Rattler who came in and had had some moments.
- 7:18I've always kind of been a guy ever since he
- 7:21was in college that thought he had a skill set
- 7:23that he could make it in the NFL. I don't
- 7:25know if it's a you know, a long term starter
- 7:27or what, but I've always thought that he could make it.
- 7:30But he had some moments last year kind of putting
- 7:32some unfair positions. Really, I mean, the team wasn't great,
- 7:35the offense wasn't great, so we the to me, the
- 7:38jury is still out, but I saw things that gave
- 7:41me hope that he could be a good starting quarterback.
- 7:46So but that year one to two jump is so
- 7:50so important for an NFL quarterback. Like, how has he
- 7:52been at practice? I've heard good things, but you've seen
- 7:55it first Tam.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm I'm you know, I'm excited about what he
- 7:59can do. So the other thing last year to just
- 8:01kind of the situation he was in, it almost felt
- 8:04like they just ran out of steam, like coaching wise,
- 8:06halfway through every game because like there just wasn't There's
- 8:09only so much you can overcome. You can only hide
- 8:10being down so many offensive lim and so many receivers,
- 8:13quarterback Alvin Kamara's not out there, and it's like they
- 8:16would throw everything at it, and then it would hit
- 8:18a point in the third quarter where it was just
- 8:19like they got solved and there there was just nothing left.
- 8:22And I don't think that was necessarily a rattler thing.
- 8:25I think that was just part of the situation too,
- 8:27that that you know, kobyak could only he don only
- 8:30overcome like seven starters being down for you know, thirty minutes,
- 8:33it seemed like, and that was the expiration on the time,
- 8:35and then it would fall apart in the second half.
- 8:37But you see the growth like it's just happening for him,
- 8:40like so much, so much quicker, like everything's on rhythm,
- 8:43you know, three step drop, back foot hits, fall out
- 8:46like you know shock his backfoot hits, kind of processing
- 8:48it a little. And that's the difference between year one
- 8:50and year two, I think with these guys. And it's
- 8:53not like he's just like dinking and dunkin either, Like
- 8:55he's attacking like aggressively, but taking what defense is giving
- 8:58him decisions. Seemed he sounds like he's carrying himself much
- 9:02more confidently. You see him kind of, you know, stepping
- 9:05up in a little bit more of a vocal leadership
- 9:08out there on the field with which I like to see.
- 9:10And man, I think you just see the chip on
- 9:13his shoulder too, Like it's immense, Like he knows that
- 9:16they're trying to replace him. It happened to him in college.
- 9:19He lost his you know, stature and identity is to
- 9:23be one in the nation, the Caleb Williams, and you know,
- 9:26it's kind of a repeat of the same story here,
- 9:28and I think a he's drawing off that experience and
- 9:31is handling it much better. I think part of the
- 9:34reason he was the fifth rounder is because when that happened,
- 9:37he kind of, you know, his his emotions kind of
- 9:40dictated how he reacted to it, and I think people
- 9:43looked at that negatively. And I think this time he's
- 9:45just taking it as a challenge while still leading his
- 9:48team and you know, kind of embracing what's going on.
- 9:51I'm sure behind the scenes he's he's probably pissed off
- 9:53and extremely motivated by it, but I think he's just
- 9:56handling it, you know, in a much more mature way.
- 9:58And I I really like I'm really encouraged by what
- 10:02we're seeing at him. I think when push comes to shove,
- 10:04like they're already trying to you know, obviously replace and
- 10:07they pick the guy with the fortieth pick, they want
- 10:11him to be the starter. But I think I think
- 10:13Rattler's like fighting hard. He looks good.
- 10:15Speaker 5: He does.
- 10:15Speaker 4: He looks really good right now.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I'm curious, like what they're looking for in their starting quarterback.
- 10:20Quarterback coach coordinator, head coach all going to be in
- 10:23the decision to who is the starting quarterback. But and
- 10:26you're right, like it does feel like Spencer Ratler has
- 10:28raised his game. We know he's got the talent. That's
- 10:30why he was talked about being a first round pick
- 10:32early in his college career.
- 10:34Speaker 3: I'm curious, like, what's going to.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Be the thing, Like, what's gonna because you got a
- 10:38rookie quarterback, a second year quarterback, and a third year quarterback. Okay,
- 10:42so you don't have this veteran quarterback that you can
- 10:44kind of lean on. Everybody's kind of for the you
- 10:47know the most part, on the same level, certainly with
- 10:50Tyler Shubb being the age that he is. So like,
- 10:52I'm curious, and I'll ask both of you this, Like,
- 10:55what do we think they're looking for? Like, what is
- 10:56the thing that they want to get out of their
- 10:58starting quarterback that's going to side this battle?
- 11:02Speaker 4: I'll look for it on this one.
- 11:05Speaker 5: Well that's the cool thing about having a new head coach, right, yeah,
- 11:08and a young staff like this, at least from like
- 11:11the offensive standpoint and directly with the quarterbacks, you don't
- 11:15really know, like we know what kind of offense Kellen
- 11:17likes to run, right, But he's never been the dude
- 11:20in charge of making all decisions. Right, He's like, all right,
- 11:23I'll coach whatever whatever you whoever you want to play,
- 11:26and now he gets to make this. So you really
- 11:28don't know the exact things they're looking for. But any
- 11:32head coach, if you're picking a starting quarterback in the
- 11:34National Football League, you're looking for a guy that is
- 11:38is what you just kind of explain Nick on how
- 11:40how Spencer's both of them are really looking but you
- 11:43avoiding the mistakes, being able to take control a guy
- 11:46that everybody when they get in the huddle, they trust
- 11:51and they feel that he's going to make the right
- 11:55decisions and the skill guys feel like he's going to
- 11:57give me the ball if I get open. This guy
- 11:59can get me the ball at any point and make
- 12:01the right decision, right offensive line. This guy is the
- 12:03guy that can get me in the right protection that
- 12:07I can be successful because the end of the day,
- 12:09everybody wants to be individually successful and a lot of
- 12:12it rides on the quarterback getting you in the right position,
- 12:15getting you the ball when you do your job, yeah,
- 12:18and being confident with it. But at the end of
- 12:20the day, not making mistakes. So those are that's a
- 12:26big right, those are big.
- 12:29Speaker 3: But nick like, I'm curious too, like whoever wins the job,
- 12:33Like what's that leash? Like you know what I mean?
- 12:35Like how are we all in?
- 12:36Speaker 2: Or we're like, hey, we're gonna go through some lumps,
- 12:38We're gonna go through some growing pains. Because again, the
- 12:41fascinating part to me is everybody's young and talented. They
- 12:45got young, talented guys, but there's nothing to like say, hey,
- 12:50you know what, remember a couple of years ago, Spencer
- 12:52went through this.
- 12:53Speaker 3: He found his way and he turned it all around.
- 12:56Speaker 2: When you don't have that to lean on, like you're wondering, Okay, well,
- 13:00if Spencer doesn't have a great two game stretch, are
- 13:02they going to go to Tallas Shuck? And if Talas
- 13:03Shuck's like that is what I'm curious about. What are
- 13:06they looking for in their starting quarterback and how committed
- 13:09are they going to be to that quarterback?
- 13:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's the most fascinating thing. And then
- 13:13just even just like as far as this battle plays out,
- 13:16like how soon do you make a decision? Because you
- 13:19look at last year Derek Carr through two hundred and
- 13:21sixty seven passes and team drills and practice, like if
- 13:25you split that up, if you're rotating, you're down to
- 13:27like what one hundred and thirty he threw sixty to
- 13:30Krysal lave Rashiji Nith sometimes so Carl only through eighteen passes.
- 13:33Dam Like you get some injuries in camp and you're rotating,
- 13:36and now guys are going back and forth, and you know,
- 13:38one day you're you're throwing the Chris Tyrie and the
- 13:41next day you're throwing the Crystal lab Like I would
- 13:44like them to just kind of settle into like something
- 13:47early and if it is shucked, I hope they just
- 13:49believe in whatever they saw that made them draft him
- 13:51at at forty and once they see it, I hope
- 13:53they kind of shift that way and go all in
- 13:56forwards it because it should just be all about the development,
- 13:58and it should be about the inconsistencies. And if shuts
- 14:02your starter and he has two bad games, I don't
- 14:05think you just pulled the hook out, like I think
- 14:06you just kind of got to ride it with him.
- 14:08And I think part of the season two should just
- 14:09really be about finding out what you got with these guys,
- 14:12because look, if they're not good and you're drafting top
- 14:16five next year, or even if they are good, you
- 14:18should still be evaluating him against the top you know,
- 14:20if you're picking top five, like you should be evaluating
- 14:22them against Club Nick and nus Meyer and Sellers and
- 14:26you know whoever the unknown quarterback is that we aren't
- 14:28talking about yet, that's gonna end up being a top
- 14:30ten pick like those I think that that should be
- 14:33the whole thing. But like, whatever, whatever you liked about him,
- 14:37whatever you know, led you to draft them at forty
- 14:40and say this guy is better than Spencer Ratler, He's
- 14:42gonna be like be believing them. Like, I don't think
- 14:44that you should just do the battle and play it
- 14:47out through three preseason games just because you feel like
- 14:50everybody is owed something. I think you owe it to
- 14:52the team if you see something that kind of lean
- 14:55into it. I mean, look, you guys can speak on
- 14:57that better than me, but like, I just think that
- 14:58like getting that timing down and if you're all in
- 15:00on it, like it's like, hey, it's August seventh, or
- 15:03you go through the first preseason game, Shocklof's abazing. He
- 15:06looked great all camp, Like all right, he's gonna get
- 15:08start too, and we're going all in with this. I
- 15:11just think that could be beneficial to you know, the
- 15:13possibility of success during the season if you settle that
- 15:16as soon as you can.
- 15:18Speaker 2: One more things that I certainly want to ask you
- 15:20about Nick before we let you go, And of course
- 15:22we're catching up with our guy Nick Underhill New Orleans
- 15:24dot Football here on OTB. The offensive line. We talked
- 15:28about it a couple of weeks ago. We were curious
- 15:30what they were going to do because you had, you know,
- 15:33three first round tackles and you had a first round
- 15:37guard and like, how are you going to all mix
- 15:39it all together? Well, Trevor Pinning has been wrapping at
- 15:42left guard, and so if that is something that ends
- 15:45up being the deal. You're gonna have four first rounders
- 15:48in a second rounder on that offensive line, and it's
- 15:52something that again we speculated, would they move Pinning inside
- 15:55what he played guard? It looks like, man, there's a
- 15:57real opportunity for him to do that. What does the
- 16:00offensive line look like to you? If it ends up
- 16:02being Pinning a guard? Where we're going to go like
- 16:05left to right right now as we see there, Like
- 16:07I know it is June the third, but if you
- 16:09had to go left to right right now, what does
- 16:11it look like?
- 16:13Speaker 4: It looks like Fuaga, Penning, McCoy Ruiz and then Fuaga
- 16:18at the at the other end. I said that back
- 16:20Banks Penning.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Yeah, right right on the left.
- 16:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Look, I'm probably the most unreliable narrator there is on Penning,
- 16:27because like I've doubted him every step of the way,
- 16:29and he's figured out, you know, last year, how to
- 16:30be decent. You know, I never thought he'd be fit
- 16:34for guard, but I guess, like I could see the
- 16:36theory on it. If everything works out, it it makes sense.
- 16:39You put him in the phone booth, you put the
- 16:40bumpers on him, you put a good player on each side.
- 16:43You let him just be big as hell in there.
- 16:46You know. I hope that he can be quick enough
- 16:47to pick up on the inside moves and uh you
- 16:51get in the rung game and he can go out
- 16:52and mall like it does. It does make sense in
- 16:55some fashion, but like just watching him throughout the years,
- 16:59like it just feels like when things popping fast, it's
- 17:01a problem for him. So I don't know what it's
- 17:03gonna end up looking like. But if it works, I mean, man,
- 17:06like the theory of this line. If Banks is who
- 17:09we think he is, Ifkuaga plays a little bit better
- 17:11than he did last year, gets back on the right,
- 17:14gets some continuity on the line, like their offensive line
- 17:16last year, their starters, the starting five only played twenty
- 17:19percent of the snaps together through through the whole season,
- 17:21which you know, I think that's really hard, Like you're
- 17:23trying to do combo blocks and all this stuff, Like
- 17:25there's no communication, there's no non verbal communication. It's just
- 17:28it just seems like a recipe for disasters. So if
- 17:31they get some continuity there, they get their starters playing
- 17:35I don't know, fifty eight percent of the snatch something
- 17:36like that, you know, I think I think it helps
- 17:40a lot, and if those guys are all decent, I
- 17:43think they can have a really good offensive line. But
- 17:44I think health is really like the biggest part of it.
- 17:47Last year, using that number fifty eight percent, the eight
- 17:50teams that had their players play fifty eight percent of
- 17:52the stats on the line all made the playoffs. Like
- 17:54it just you can keep those guys on the field
- 17:57and you have a whole match of first rounders and
- 18:00in a great second rounder, man, like if they play
- 18:04up to their potential, like the bar really should be
- 18:06for them to have like a top tier unit in
- 18:09the league. Like the investment is unprecedented almost you know,
- 18:13the Eagles are close, but they got you know, their
- 18:16their Hall of Fame tackle in the seventh round, which
- 18:18is better than a first round investment. But like, not
- 18:20many teams like inventions like that line. So it should
- 18:26work out. And if it doesn't, I mean, I think
- 18:28the spotlight shines on everybody in the organization top to bottom,
- 18:31like like there's just too much there for it to
- 18:34not be a good, good unit out of fall.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with you wholeheartedly. He is Nick Underhill,
- 18:40New Orleans.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Dot Football is the website at Nick underscore underheel is
- 18:45the handle there?
- 18:46Speaker 5: Hold on, Nick, one word answer here and we're going
- 18:49to hold this to you. Hold your feet to the fire.
- 18:51Prediction A right, way too early prediction Game one? Who's
- 18:55the quarterback? Shuck?
- 18:58Speaker 3: There it is.
- 18:59Speaker 2: First, it was cursing because you asked him the question.
- 19:01He said, shuck ah, got you Okay, there he is shown, Nick,
- 19:08I can tell you this all right. So I've actually
- 19:11been talking with Tyler Shuck and we've been like going
- 19:13back and forth about getting him on the show, and
- 19:16like every time I talk to him, he's like, hey, man,
- 19:20I'm in the facility or like hey, I got to
- 19:22go to the facility and it's like late at night.
- 19:25And so I don't think it's lip service, like he
- 19:28is doing everything he possibly can do to go win
- 19:31that job.
- 19:32Speaker 3: As a rookie.
- 19:33Speaker 4: No that we've been going through the same thing and
- 19:36he's just like, I'm too focused right now I'm doing this.
- 19:38So yeah, I mean absolutely, like I think he's locked in.
- 19:40I think he's he's doing everything he can and uh,
- 19:43before I go, no, guys, no sucking up here, like mad,
- 19:46I'm happy here on here man, Like I always thought
- 19:48you were one of the more interesting players I ever
- 19:50covered and interviewed in the locker room, So like, I'm
- 19:53excited to hear what you got to say every mark.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks dude. I appreciate it, man, it means a lot.
- 19:56And looking forward to talking to you every.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Week, no doubt. Yes, sir, stop it up, all right, Nick,
- 20:00you're the man. We appreciate it, sir, look forward next week. Yep,
- 20:05all right, you as well.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Nick Underhill, New Orleanstoff Football. He pretty much just said
- 20:09you're a.
- 20:09Speaker 5: Weirdo basically, thanks Nick, kidding.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Yeah, when I interviewed you, that was real. That was
- 20:17very nice, very nice, very nice of him. Just wait
- 20:20till you prove them wrong.
- 20:20Speaker 5: Let me tell you that what what.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Let me tell you what.
- 20:25Speaker 5: I was nothing Spencer Rattler when he said is you
- 20:30might be playing pissed off in a chip on my shoulder.
- 20:32Let me tell you that's a very powerful thing. So
- 20:34it wouldn't shock me one bit if he did end
- 20:37up being a starter and had good year.
- 20:40Speaker 2: It is something like it is something that I know
- 20:43that you used in your career. I used him good
- 20:47ones do.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Actually, let's take a break.
- 20:51Speaker 2: I do want to talk about that because it's a
- 20:53great point that you made the first one so far.

- 22:56Speaker 5: Wait? What is this? When's it? When's the chorus?
- 22:59Speaker 3: All right? Telling it to? Telling me? Sings this song?
- 23:01And I'm gonna explain.
- 23:01Speaker 6: Why pussy Cat Dolls.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Okay, you know that is trash band?
- 23:08Speaker 6: No, they had some hits.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Singer one of the panel lists.
- 23:16Speaker 7: Yeah, a model now to sing?
- 23:19Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, yeah what mask singer? Like mask? They were
- 23:23the mask mask singer. You have seen that? Yeah?
- 23:28Speaker 6: It was like an athlete. That was one.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:33Speaker 7: And then Jordan may Alatta.
- 23:34Speaker 3: With the Eagle, Oh yeah, because he can really sing.
- 23:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Wait, what wasn't Rudy Giuliani one of them?
- 23:44Speaker 7: I think a singer?
- 23:46Speaker 5: A singer? Things looking up?
- 23:49Speaker 3: All right?
- 23:51Speaker 2: So I do want to make this point because you
- 23:52made it and it's at decent point.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Not a good one, but a decent one.
- 23:58Speaker 2: When you were talking about Spencer and you know, knowing
- 24:02that they brought somebody in to replace you, and what
- 24:06that can do for you. There's two things that can do.
- 24:10It can either make you crumble because you're so insecure
- 24:13and you're like, oh my god, my replacements here. I'm done,
- 24:17and I've seen a lot of people at LSU and
- 24:21San Diego and Denver have that feeling. Or it can
- 24:25piss you off and it can bring out something that
- 24:30you've been missing now.
- 24:33Speaker 5: And then I'll being pissed off as such an extremely
- 24:37powerful motivator. Or just like you said, it can crush you.
- 24:41Speaker 3: It can, and I'm just giving you my example.
- 24:45Speaker 2: My career, I always felt like no matter if it
- 24:49was at Evangel or LSU or even San Diego, somebody
- 24:55was always like brought in to replace me, Like at
- 24:59even at a Angel, Like that's why we joke around.
- 25:02But like I was playing d line and linebacker because
- 25:05like there was a daddy ball situation and and and
- 25:08I couldn't get over to running back and I wanted to.
- 25:11Speaker 3: And that's what that was my fuel there.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And then at LSU, we all know they brought in
- 25:19five star after five star running back, like they were like,
- 25:24we're going to force the two star bow legg and
- 25:28white running back to prove us that he can go
- 25:30out there and still be the start.
- 25:31Speaker 3: But that that fueled me. Now, that didn't mean I
- 25:34was a bad teammate either.
- 25:36Speaker 2: I was still going like, Hey, my boys, Richard Murphy,
- 25:40Charles Scott Keeling, Williams, Steven Ridley, go on and on
- 25:44and on. Dudes, they were my boys, and I was
- 25:47going to be the best teammate I could. I wasn't
- 25:49gonna be that guy that's like, I'm not helping you.
- 25:50You're trying to take No, I'll help you, but I'm
- 25:52still going to keep my job. You're not taking it
- 25:54from me. You can have it when I'm gone, and
- 25:57I'll watch you and I'll cheer for you. And hey,
- 25:59when I'm tired and I pass at the top of
- 26:00my helmet, you can come in and get a couple
- 26:02of carries for sure, because you're good, right, You're gonna
- 26:05held with the team if I'm not at a one hundred, Like,
- 26:06come in here and get these carries like there's a
- 26:09way to be pissed off and go about it where
- 26:10you're not a bad teammate too.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Yep.
- 26:12Speaker 2: So I had that situation when I was in San Diego.
- 26:15They bring in fullbacks all the time. One of my boys,
- 26:18Patrick DeMarco, who ended up playing having a long, long
- 26:20NFL career, they brought him in. We're trying to replace
- 26:23me and Tolbert with him, right. We brought in a
- 26:25guy named Frank Summers. They tried to every year that happened,
- 26:29and I loved it. Who y'all bringing in? I loved
- 26:32if they were working out like hvax on a Monday
- 26:35morning when I came in, who's on that field?
- 26:37Speaker 5: Oh?
- 26:38Speaker 2: They went Okay, it takes you to another level if
- 26:41you can get there. If you can't, they're gonna take
- 26:44your job. But if you can do that while still
- 26:46being the best teammate, being good in the locker room,
- 26:50not being a cancer. Just realized like, Hey, if I'm
- 26:53Spencer Ratler, Tyler Shuckman, I am glad they drafted you.
- 26:55Speaker 3: That's what I needed. But this is my job. Now.
- 26:58Speaker 2: We'll watch film together, we'll break down coverages together. I
- 27:01will help you you'll help me, that's fine, but just
- 27:05know this is my motivation to be the guy.
- 27:07Speaker 5: Yeah, and for Spencer Ratler to go through the things
- 27:12he had to do last year, being such a depleted team,
- 27:16such a bad team last year, and for the court
- 27:20of public opinion that actually, like thinks he still got
- 27:22a shot when he did all that as a starting
- 27:24quarterback as a rookie, and means that he's got something
- 27:29to him. Yeah, he's got some juice, He's got potential.
- 27:32People see it because there was those flashes. Okay, when
- 27:35you talk about the Saints drafting a second round pick
- 27:39and Shuck, a talented guy, people are going to get
- 27:43caught up. And they drafted him to replace They drafted
- 27:46him to be the starter. No, they drafted him so
- 27:50they could have a good starting quarterback. Yeah, right right, Yeah,
- 27:55it doesn't have to be the last name shuck if
- 27:58it pisses the other guy off enough to be the
- 28:01best guy. It was a great draft pick. Yeah, great
- 28:04draft pick. I said this about I'm going to bring
- 28:06up the Packers a lot. But when the Packers drafted
- 28:09Jordan Love, you know, okay, they didn't. Of course, they
- 28:12drafted like a long term replacement. But I say, the
- 28:17great ones always use it as motivation. Yeah, what did
- 28:20Aaron do after they drafted a massive year? I think
- 28:23two MVPs in a row? Yeah, say right, yep in
- 28:26the twilight. Yeah, it's a motivator and it's powerful. So,
- 28:30like I said, they drafted a second round pick to
- 28:33have a good quarterback. Yep, doesn't matter which one it is.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Right in the front office, they know that, like, okay,
- 28:40well we just want a great starting quarterback, right, And so,
- 28:43like I know, there's a lot of people, there's a
- 28:46lot of fans. Way, man, you draft this guy fortieth overall,
- 28:48and maybe it is Tyler Shuck, But if it's not,
- 28:51just know that you're getting the best version of Spencer
- 28:53Rattler as well. Now I don't think Jay Canterer's in
- 28:55this conversation. It's Spencer Rattler, it's Tyler Shuck. It's those
- 28:58two guys.
- 28:59Speaker 5: When I got drafted, they they picked the second rounder
- 29:02quarterback and they picked me in the seventh round. Now,
- 29:07the common person out there would have been like, all right, well,
- 29:09the second rounder got paid all this money. Seventh rounder
- 29:11didn't get paid any money, and so you make him
- 29:14the backup, and if you don't do that, then like
- 29:17you just wasted two million dollars or whatever it is
- 29:19whatever you got paid as the second round. Yeah, not really,
- 29:23it's the same. You spent the money already.
- 29:26Speaker 3: You're not paying anybody anything right now.
- 29:27Speaker 5: They've got this guy for nearly nothing.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Yeah, you got peanuts right now in the Spencer Rattler.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Peanuts, dude. So it's gonna be a great competition. I
- 29:37don't know what the overall look is going to be
- 29:38for the New Orleans Saints. The roster's got more issues
- 29:42and vote, without question it does. You were so thin
- 29:45as far as your weapons, A receiver, running backs better
- 29:50than it was. I like some of the people you've
- 29:52brought in through the draft through undrafted free agent guys.
- 29:56Speaker 3: I like Clyde being there.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Receiver is so thin, man, you are like one injury
- 30:01away from having guys off the street, having uber drivers
- 30:05again like you had last year. Defense is a little
- 30:08bit older. So the roster is what the roster is.
- 30:11But I do like the fact that you've got a
- 30:14quarterback competition that is going to be a real competition.
- 30:17They're going to drive each other. You have a veteran
- 30:19even though he's a rookie because he is older. It's
- 30:21not a joke. I mean, he's about to be twenty
- 30:23six years old. He gets it, he understands it. So
- 30:26he's not going to pout throughout the process. Spencer Ratlers
- 30:29is not going to pount throughout the process. If they're
- 30:30doing it right, what we're talking about, if you.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Power, you lose. Yeah, if it's cutting, you're not going
- 30:38to be there. It doesn't sound like it. It sounds no,
- 30:39it doesn't. It sounds like they're saying. But for Saints fans,
- 30:42it sounds like the good part of this is happening
- 30:45and they're going to push each other. I mean, I'm
- 30:48I'm excited. I'm we're not even Saints Pete like fans
- 30:51over here. No, but we're going to give him the
- 30:54best shot for sure. But you know, you guys, listen
- 30:58to note Jake and I like, we'll call them out
- 31:00pretty quick. Yeah, yeah, we'll get them.
- 31:02Speaker 3: What is funny, though, is like, you did play for
- 31:04the Saints.
- 31:05Speaker 5: I did, finished the career. Saints was the last helmet
- 31:08I ever put on me too.
- 31:11Speaker 2: I was in camp with them, Yeah, I was in
- 31:12camp with them, and I said, hey, Hey, guys, i'mmost
- 31:16stay at the house.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm good.
- 31:19Speaker 3: They were going there.
- 31:20Speaker 2: So i'd been to mini camp with them, and They're
- 31:23about to go to Greenbrier and I'm sitting there and
- 31:25I got three young kids, and I had moved my
- 31:27family all over, and I had that feeling of my guy,
- 31:32you're done. And when you have that feeling, you have
- 31:35to pay respect to football. If you're not all in,
- 31:39you don't need to do it. It is a sport in
- 31:41which if you have step you'll get exposed real quick.
- 31:46Speaker 3: And they were great though.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I called them. I was like, hey, here's the deal.
- 31:49They're like, we totally get it, we totally understand. Wish
- 31:52you all the best, and they brought in another fullback
- 31:54and it was what it was.
- 31:55Speaker 3: But yeah, we both finished with the Saints helmet on.
- 31:59That's pretty wild, right, Yeah, it is kind of crazy.
- 32:01You were three, right, Cajun Cannon's.
- 32:04Speaker 5: Number number three?
- 32:05Speaker 3: Really, didn't you?
- 32:07Speaker 5: I was three? Yeah?
- 32:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it's Cajun Cannon's number.
- 32:09Speaker 5: All right?
- 32:10Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 32:10Speaker 5: I thought you were saying, really like I wore three?
- 32:13I or what number I wore? Uh forty one?
- 32:17Speaker 2: Okay, a Landra, guess what number I wore with the
- 32:19Saints eighteen.
- 32:21Speaker 3: I wish I could. I couldn't. At that time. It
- 32:23was only twenty through forty.
- 32:24Speaker 8: Oh, okay, twenty through forty twenty.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Through forty nine, twenty two okay, heye, twenty six, oh
- 32:34number forty four.
- 32:37Speaker 7: Okay, that's a fullback number full back number back.
- 32:40Speaker 3: I was forty four as I was going to be.
- 32:42Speaker 5: I've heard the Saints camps used to not be much
- 32:44fun either, back in the day. I heard it from
- 32:47a couple of different fullbacks. Actually that what that Saints
- 32:51camp was not much fun? Like back in the oh
- 32:54even mini camp wasn't fun.
- 32:56Speaker 2: It's like, hey, guys, we don't have pads on here,
- 32:58like we're good. Like if we're good, if we're setting
- 33:01the tempo, that's fine.
- 33:03Speaker 3: But is this the tempo? Yeah, okay, it is. Let's go.
- 33:06Speaker 5: It's in college.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Twenty thirty ISO, over and over and over again.
- 33:11Speaker 5: But inside run.
- 33:13Speaker 2: But if you had a good block on ISO, Sean
- 33:16Payton would give you a full back belly the next play.
- 33:18Speaker 5: Really yeah, alright, yeah, respect, yeah, all.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Right, we're gonna step away. So here's what we're gonna do.
- 33:24Speaker 5: Last two segments, Well, I gotta tease real quick.
- 33:27Speaker 6: He did a tease like last hour and we never
- 33:30got people. We forgot about it. I answered in the.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Break all right, you'll have that, and also we'll have
- 33:39mailbag slash ask the bench just kind of the same thing.
- 33:42Speaker 3: We'll have that to end today's show.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Off the bench, all right, good, All Star Toyota, All Star,
- 33:50Toyota of Vat and Rouge, calm, buying, new, leasing, renting.
- 33:55Every single thing is available. The one thing I'll always
- 34:00encourage our listeners to do, Matthew Clayton Flynn is to
- 34:04go check out what they have available because like so
- 34:07for me, I do have. You know, we have a
- 34:09big family and you would think like the mid sized
- 34:11Highlander wouldn't work out for our lifestyle, but it does.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Like it. It is great.
- 34:16Speaker 2: It's a mid sized suv, but you don't realize how
- 34:20much room you have, certainly in the third seat option.
- 34:22And we have captain chairs as well, so it's like
- 34:24easy for my youngers to like crawl back there and
- 34:28just walk in. It drives so smooth, you can be
- 34:32bop around town. It's not an oversized suv. But the
- 34:35best part about All Star if you want a full
- 34:37sized SUV.
- 34:39Speaker 3: You can go get the Sequoia.
- 34:40Speaker 2: They have everything that you possibly can want, buying, new,
- 34:43leasing and renting, all star toy f bunderers that.
- 34:50Speaker 5: The girls don't.
- 34:59Speaker 1: From players to legends, Hester and Flynn breakdown l s
- 35:02U Football like only champions can.
- 35:08Speaker 5: Welcome back what you're looking at. Welcome back to O
- 35:13t d.
- 35:13Speaker 3: Now, she was playing a song for you.
- 35:15Speaker 2: She wants you to I was gonna see like, I
- 35:17was so mind no, So the pussy Cadals are just
- 35:21a blind spot for you.
- 35:22Speaker 8: I guess this isn't okay?
- 35:25Speaker 5: Who is this?
- 35:26Speaker 6: This is Danity Kane.
- 35:28Speaker 5: This is not a real name.
- 35:31Speaker 6: Diddy's band Danity.
- 35:32Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, uh Audrey O'Day or wait is that
- 35:36her name Aubrey or Audrey one.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Of those I know you're talking about.
- 35:40Speaker 6: Yeah, she was in this band Danity, Danity.
- 35:44Speaker 8: That is not a real person, the band, that's the
- 35:47name of the band.
- 35:50Speaker 7: But what movie references this song is trash?
- 35:56Speaker 5: What did you put this in a red trash Rangers dumpster?
- 36:00Speaker 4: Wow?
- 36:00Speaker 3: This song is not it's not trash. Show stop movie.
- 36:04Speaker 7: There's a movie you see but they reference to Danny
- 36:07can I can't think of it right now?
- 36:08Speaker 3: I was gonna go to home.
- 36:11Speaker 6: Specific thing.
- 36:13Speaker 7: Well, I mean he's seen it, I promise.
- 36:15Speaker 8: Well, but how do you like it's so specific like
- 36:17the movie that they say, Danny, I want to be
- 36:19able to run.
- 36:20Speaker 5: Nobody's casually playing this song.
- 36:23Speaker 6: They used to be a song back in the day.
- 36:26They used to be lyrical.
- 36:28Speaker 5: When what song?
- 36:29Speaker 3: What song gets you on the dance floor, sir?
- 36:31Speaker 2: Like, if you hear it and you've had some cold
- 36:33pops at a wedding, you're like Lacy, meet you floor now.
- 36:38Speaker 5: I mean they say wedding. You just got to go
- 36:40with the just a classic little shout.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Oh wow, how white, let's go Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
- 36:48Speaker 5: You play shout at a wedding?
- 36:50Speaker 3: No, I dare you? No shout get a little bit lower.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you and seventeen grandparents are going to be out
- 36:57there with your canes and walkers. Oh have you got
- 37:02tennis balls on that walker?
- 37:03Speaker 8: Sir?
- 37:05Speaker 3: Shout that's crazy, that's what. Yeah, that is the widest
- 37:10show has ever been. And that's what Taylor on it.
- 37:15Speaker 6: That's crazy.
- 37:15Speaker 5: You're telling me you're at a wedding reception.
- 37:19Speaker 3: I'm yeah.
- 37:20Speaker 5: You hear about responsibly about nine to ten pops deep
- 37:30shout because it doesn't play to the end. We're not
- 37:31playing shout early on halfway. Yeah, it's playing and you
- 37:37and you're gonna go find a stand up round table
- 37:40in the corner and you're just gonna that's when you're.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Gonna eat your order.
- 37:42Speaker 5: I didn't say you're not gonna get out there and
- 37:45get a little bit lower now.
- 37:46Speaker 8: Hispanic weddings are way different than like, we don't play show.
- 37:51Speaker 2: The shout like might start the night. It's not the closer,
- 37:54it's not.
- 37:55Speaker 5: It's not starting any it's at the it's maybe it's
- 37:58not these it's the relief, Okay, it's it's when you
- 38:02actually want to get on the dance floor, because you
- 38:06know you get there. No one starts out on the
- 38:08dance floor. You gotta get a couple of people trickling.
- 38:10Speaker 7: In and then they do.
- 38:13Speaker 5: And maybe maybe after the announcements and all the all
- 38:18the scheduled dances, maybe.
- 38:22Speaker 3: That was that was one thing.
- 38:23Speaker 2: And our wives as well, all four of us like
- 38:28like to get out there. Katie had a birthday party
- 38:30one time at the house and it was like us
- 38:31four basically for a while until everybody's like Cole pop
- 38:36deep enough to join us also at the gallop that
- 38:39we just hosted for You High.
- 38:40Speaker 3: It's kind of like the same situation.
- 38:42Speaker 2: I was like, all right, us four are gonna be
- 38:43out here and shout out to all the U High
- 38:45parents because those people were ready.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Let's they were ready to throw down and have a
- 38:50good time and get on the dance floor.
- 38:52Speaker 5: Lets it go.
- 38:53Speaker 6: Well, I'm trying to think.
- 38:55Speaker 5: I mean, there's a lot. I mean you told me
- 38:56on the spot, I gotta there's a lot. It's not crazy,
- 39:00it's crazy. We the more we talk about this, the
- 39:02less crazy it sounded to everybody in here. Okay, it's
- 39:05just the first one that came to my head. And
- 39:07it's a banger.
- 39:07Speaker 8: It was like when Grant was like smoothed by Santana.
- 39:12Speaker 5: Do not put.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Smooth by Santana's kind of a banger.
- 39:17Speaker 8: It's that kind of a banker. It's definitively a banger.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Give me, give me a little bit smooth by Rob Thomas.
- 39:23Speaker 6: I got you perfect summer song.
- 39:25Speaker 3: I think so too.
- 39:27Speaker 6: All right, what did you tease earlier?
- 39:30Speaker 3: Though we never got to bothers you.
- 39:33Speaker 5: I'm gonna start out by saying this, I got my
- 39:35thumbs bleeding a little bit, pull your fingernails, so I
- 39:40got a little blood because my finger's hurt a little bit. So,
- 39:45which is kind of like my bridge transition to what
- 39:49is my big pet peeve in baseball?
- 39:50Speaker 3: Right now?
- 39:52Speaker 5: I'm a I'm a radio guy. Now, okay, I can
- 39:56whine about my finger bleeding. Yeah, what are we doing?
- 40:02Speaker 2: You know you could put on that if you were
- 40:04trying to prevent your fingers.
- 40:05Speaker 5: Maybe I should come and do radio with sliding of
- 40:10emits on? Like, what are we doing? Why does everybody
- 40:16putting these stupid mits on?
- 40:19Speaker 2: Never protect your hand from my head first, from breaking
- 40:23your hand.
- 40:24Speaker 5: Don't be a baby.
- 40:26Speaker 7: It does make it extends a hand a little bit
- 40:29longer than it normally is.
- 40:30Speaker 3: You can.
- 40:30Speaker 5: I cannot stand them. It's a weak look.
- 40:33Speaker 6: Never needed.
- 40:33Speaker 5: It's a beta look.
- 40:34Speaker 7: It is bad.
- 40:35Speaker 5: It's a beta beta look.
- 40:40Speaker 3: I don't like the double the double of emit is,
- 40:44but I do.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Understand putting it on your throwing hand to to protect
- 40:49the throwing hand.
- 40:50Speaker 5: I don't know. That doesn't make any sense to me,
- 40:54but I get it. Okay, Well, let's let's let's not
- 40:57hurt our fingers. Blah blah, blah, just slide like people
- 40:59have been slaw for over one hundred years. Normal, don't
- 41:03break your finger doing it?
- 41:04Speaker 7: Ricky Henderson never.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Like or if you break your finger, put some dirt
- 41:09on it.
- 41:11Speaker 6: What are doing he broke his hand?
- 41:14Speaker 2: Yeah, still d HD like it's just like you're allowed
- 41:18to even like complain about a broken finger when I.
- 41:20Speaker 5: Was Node, it's a finger, but your ass in the game.
- 41:25Speaker 2: It's a little silver thing at Walgreens, they said, and
- 41:27put a little tape on there.
- 41:29Speaker 8: But you don't just deal with the raspberry on your
- 41:31hand that you get from sight.
- 41:32Speaker 5: Like just so, Taylor, your explanation was the only thing
- 41:39it does. It does so well, that's that's performance enhancing
- 41:44at that point.
- 41:45Speaker 2: And as Bradley Dale Pieboteau would always tell us, if
- 41:49you ask anybody in this room if you could add
- 41:51an inch, would you.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Splits on punt team guys, what are y'all talking about?
- 41:57Speaker 7: That?

- 42:14Speaker 5: I'm Bradley Dale, baby, do all right?
- 42:17Speaker 3: An inch matters in punt protection. You could add an
- 42:20inch everybody in here one and means something, so does.
