since I can't have kids, it was a blessing to adopt my wife's son after we got married

being a parent is rewarding but is also difficult at times: being there and dealing with heartbreaks both with relationships and watching our son get hurt playing sports and then not being able to play, dealing with attitude issues and pushing back on house rules

You are there to be the parent, set and hold rules and raise them to be good people, not to be their friend. That comes later in life
