- 0:00Isolation doesn't usually feel dangerous at first.
- 0:03In fact, it often feels necessary.
- 0:07It feels like space, like breathing room, like protection.
- 0:15After a hard conversation. You pull back.
- 0:18After being misunderstood, you keep things to yourself.
- 0:23After getting hurt, you decide it's just easier to deal with
- 0:26things on your own. And if you're being honest,
- 0:30there's a part of you that likes it.
- 0:34No expectations, no awkward conversations, no risks of being
- 0:40misunderstood. Again, just you managing life on
- 0:45your terms. But here's the problem.
- 0:49What starts as protection slowly becomes a prison.
- 0:54Because isolation doesn't just keep the pain out, it keeps the
- 0:58healing out too. And the longer you stay there,
- 1:03the harder it becomes to see clearly, think clearly, and live
- 1:08freely. Today, we're going to talk about
- 1:12the cost of isolation. Welcome to Unmasked, where we
- 1:22take off the filters and we get real about faith, failure, and
- 1:26finding freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:29Farnsworth, and this is episode 2 of our miniseries Breaking
- 1:34Free. In the last episode, we talked
- 1:36about the lie of self-reliance, the belief that you should be
- 1:40able to handle life on your own. And today we're taking the next
- 1:45step because self-reliance doesn't stay neutral, it leads
- 1:50somewhere. It leads to isolation.
- 1:53Isolation carries a cost that most people don't fully
- 1:56understand until they've been living in it for a while.
- 1:59So today we're going to talk about what isolation actually
- 2:02does to us emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, and
- 2:07why stepping out of it is one of the most important moves that
- 2:10you can make towards freedom. So take a breath, pull up a
- 2:14chair, and let's get real. This is unmasked.
- 2:23You see isolation. It doesn't normally start loud.
- 2:29In fact, it rarely begins with a big decision.
- 2:33You don't wake up one day and say, I'm going to disconnect
- 2:37from everyone. It starts small.
- 2:41You stop sharing something that's bothering you.
- 2:44You keep a conversation surface level.
- 2:47Instead of going deeper, you tell yourself, I'll deal with it
- 2:51later. And in the moment, those choices
- 2:55don't feel significant. In fact, they may feel
- 2:58practical. They may feel like that you're
- 3:01just managing your life. But over time, those small
- 3:05decisions compound. You start opening up less.
- 3:11You start trusting less. You start letting fewer people
- 3:15into what's really going on. Before long, you're living a
- 3:19life where most people know you, but very few people actually
- 3:24know what's happening inside of you.
- 3:27And that is isolation. Not necessarily being alone, but
- 3:33being unknown. See, there's a difference
- 3:37between solitude and isolation. So let's be clear about
- 3:42something here. Solitude is not the same as
- 3:47isolation. Solitude is healthy.
- 3:51Solitude is intentional. It's a time alone with God.
- 3:57Time to think, time to rest, time to reset.
- 4:02Jesus practiced solitude. He could step away from crowds,
- 4:07from ministry, from pressure, and spend time alone in prayer.
- 4:13Solitude strengthens you. Isolation, however, it does the
- 4:19opposite. It weakens you because isolation
- 4:23is not chosen for growth, it's chosen for protection.
- 4:30Isolation says that I would rather deal with this alone than
- 4:33risk letting someone in. And the problem with that
- 4:38mindset is that it slowly disconnects you from the truth.
- 4:43Because when you're isolated, your perspective becomes limited
- 4:47to your own thoughts, and your thoughts are not always the most
- 4:53reliable. In fact, one of the most
- 4:54dangerous effects of isolation is how it changes the way that
- 4:58you think. See, when you're isolated, your
- 5:02struggles feel a lot bigger. Your fears feel more convincing.
- 5:08Your assumptions go unchallenged, your narrative in
- 5:14your head, it starts to take over.
- 5:17You begin to believe things like no one would understand this
- 5:22isn't that big of a deal, I should be able to handle this.
- 5:27I'll deal with it eventually. And because there's no one
- 5:31speaking into your life consistently, those thoughts go
- 5:35unchecked. Isolation removes perspective,
- 5:40and without perspective, small issues grow into big problems.
- 5:45Things that could have been addressed early become patterns,
- 5:49patterns become habits, habits become strongholds.
- 5:53And all of it is happening quietly in the background.
- 5:56No announcement, no warning, just a slow drift.
- 6:03See, isolation doesn't just affect your thinking, it also
- 6:07affects your emotional health. Because when you carry
- 6:11everything alone, there's no release, there's no place to
- 6:16process, there's no place to be fully honest.
- 6:21And so the weight builds, stress builds, frustration builds, and
- 6:28eventually it shows up. Sometimes it shows up as
- 6:32irritability. You find yourself snapping at
- 6:35people over small things. Have you ever done that?
- 6:40I know I have. Sometimes it shows up as
- 6:44numbness. You stop feeling the way that
- 6:47you used to. Sometimes it shows up as
- 6:51anxiety. Your mind won't slow down and
- 6:55you can't turn things off. And sometimes it shows up as
- 6:59exhaustion, not because you're doing, not because you're doing
- 7:04too much physically, but because you're carrying too much
- 7:08emotionally. And the hard part is when you're
- 7:11isolated, you don't always recognize what's causing it.
- 7:16You just know that something feels off.
- 7:19But there's another area of cost that isolation brings.
- 7:28It also costs and affects your spiritual life, because when you
- 7:34disconnect from people, you often begin to disconnect from
- 7:39God as well, in subtle ways. Not necessarily completely, but
- 7:48gradually your prayers become less honest.
- 7:54You stop bringing the full weight of what you're dealing
- 7:56with. You keep things surface level.
- 8:00And over time, your relationship with God starts to feel distant.
- 8:05Not because he moved, but because isolation has trained
- 8:08you to hold on to things, to hold them in.
- 8:13And holding things in is the opposite of surrender.
- 8:17First, Peter 58 says to be alert because the enemy prowls like a
- 8:22roaring lion. And here's what predators do
- 8:27They isolate. They look for the one that's
- 8:30separated from the group because isolation makes you vulnerable.
- 8:36When you're isolated, you're easier to deceive, you're easier
- 8:42to discourage, you're easier to overwhelm.
- 8:47And that's why isolation is so, so dangerous.
- 8:52It doesn't just affect your circumstances, it affects your
- 8:56ability to see clearly. So if isolation is so harmful,
- 9:06why do we stay there? Well, we stay there because it
- 9:10feels safe. It feels controlled, it feels
- 9:14predictable. In isolation, you don't have to
- 9:18explain yourself, You don't have to risk being misunderstood.
- 9:23You don't have to deal with uncomfortable conversations.
- 9:28You don't have to let anyone see your struggles, and in the short
- 9:34term that's easier, but with what feels easy now often cost
- 9:40you later, because the longer you stay isolated, the harder it
- 9:44becomes to step out. The walls get thicker, the
- 9:48habits get stronger, the fears get louder, and eventually the
- 9:53isolation it starts to feel normal.
- 9:58At some point, though, we all hit a turning point.
- 10:01We had a moment where isolation stops working for us.
- 10:06It might come through a conversation or through burnout.
- 10:10It might come through a realization that you're tired of
- 10:13carrying everything alone. But something shifts, and you
- 10:19begin to see things differently. You realize that what felt like
- 10:25protection has actually been holding you back.
- 10:30That moment is important because it creates an opportunity.
- 10:35An opportunity to step out. Not dramatically, not all at
- 10:39once, but intentionally. Breaking out of isolation does
- 10:46not require a huge move. In fact, it starts small.
- 10:52It starts with honesty. It might look like telling
- 10:56somebody that I've been struggling.
- 10:59It might look like answering honestly when someone says how
- 11:02are you doing. It might look like joining a
- 11:06group even when it feels uncomfortable.
- 11:10The goal isn't to tell everyone everything, it's to stop
- 11:14carrying everything alone, because the moment that you
- 11:18bring something into the light, it loses power.
- 11:23James 516 says to confess your struggles to one another and
- 11:27pray for each other so that you may be healed.
- 11:31Healing does not happen in isolation, it happens in
- 11:35connection. So let me ask you something.
- 11:41Where have you been isolating? Where have you been carrying on
- 11:47your own? What have you been carrying on
- 11:51your own? What conversations have you been
- 11:55avoiding? And what would it look like to
- 11:58take that one step out of isolation this week?
- 12:02Not a big step, just one. Because freedom doesn't begin
- 12:07with a crowd, It begins with connection.
- 12:18Next time on Unmasked, we're going to talk about the power of
- 12:20brotherhood. Because stepping out of
- 12:23isolation is one thing, building the right relationships is
- 12:27another. We're going to talk about what
- 12:28real community actually looks like and why the right people in
- 12:33your life can change everything. If this episode resignated with
- 12:38you, would you take a moment and share it with somebody that came
- 12:42to mind while you were listening?
- 12:45And remember, this isolation may feel safe, but it will never
- 12:51leave to freedom. Freedom is found in connection,
- 12:56and it begins the moment that you stop walking alone and you
- 13:00choose to live unmasked. God bless you.
