Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Spanish with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 109 already — can you believe it? Lucas: I know. And today, we're going to the market. Specifically, we're buying vegetables. Luna: Oh, I love markets. So many colors and smells. But I never know what to say in Spanish beyond 'hola'. Lucas: That's why we're here. By the end of this episode, you'll be able to ask for tomatoes, potatoes, and more, and even pay for them. Luna: Sounds perfect. So what's the first phrase I need? Lucas: Let's start with: Quiero un kilo de tomates. Luna: Quiero un kilo de tomates. That means 'I want one kilo of tomatoes', right? Lucas: Exactly. 'Quiero' is 'I want', 'un kilo' is 'one kilo', and 'tomates' is 'tomatoes'. Let's hear it again: Quiero un kilo de tomates. Luna: Quiero un kilo de tomates. Lucas: Great. And if you want two kilos of potatoes, you say: Dos kilos de patatas, por favor. Luna: Dos kilos de patatas, por favor. That's 'two kilos of potatoes, please'. Lucas: Yes. 'Patatas' is a common word for potatoes in Spain. In Latin America, you might hear 'papas', but 'patatas' works too. Luna: Good to know. So I can say 'Quiero dos kilos de patatas' if I want two kilos? Lucas: Exactly. And then the vendor might ask: ¿Algo más? Meaning 'anything else?'. Luna: ¿Algo más? If I'm done, I say: Nada más, gracias. Lucas: Perfect. 'Nada más, gracias' — 'nothing else, thanks'. Now, when you're ready to pay, you'll ask: ¿Cuánto es todo? Luna: ¿Cuánto es todo? 'How much is everything?' Lucas: Right. And the vendor tells you the price. Then you hand over money and say: Aquí tiene. Luna: Aquí tiene. That's like 'here you go'. Lucas: Exactly. Very polite and common. Let's run through a quick scenario. Imagine you're at the market. Luna: Okay, I'll be the customer. You can be the vendor. Lucas: Sounds good. ¿Qué desea? Luna: Quiero un kilo de tomates. Lucas: Muy bien. ¿Algo más? Luna: Dos kilos de patatas, por favor. Lucas: Perfecto. ¿Algo más? Luna: Nada más, gracias. ¿Cuánto es todo? Lucas: Son siete euros. Luna: Aquí tiene. Lucas: Gracias. ¡Buen provecho! Luna: That felt so natural. I can totally do that now. Lucas: You did really well. And listeners, if you're enjoying these episodes and they're helping you make progress, consider supporting the show. Lucas: Exactly. So if you've gotten something out of the episodes, that link is all you need. Luna: Now, back to the market. Let's practice the phrases one more time. I'll say them, and you repeat in your head or out loud. Lucas: Good idea. First: Quiero un kilo de tomates. Luna: Quiero un kilo de tomates. Lucas: Dos kilos de patatas, por favor. Luna: Dos kilos de patatas, por favor. Lucas: ¿Cuánto es todo? Luna: ¿Cuánto es todo? Lucas: Aquí tiene. Luna: Aquí tiene. Lucas: ¿Algo más? Luna: ¿Algo más? Lucas: Nada más, gracias. Luna: Nada más, gracias. Lucas: Fantastic. Now you're ready for the market. Luna: I might actually try this at the farmer's market this weekend. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: You're welcome. And thanks for listening. Keep practicing these phrases, and we'll see you next time. Luna: Hasta luego!
