Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Pit Talk, a Fox Sports and
- 0:03Speaker 1: Speed Cafe Formula one podcast. On today's episode, it's Hungarian
- 0:07Speaker 1: Grand Prix week, with the sport feeling tighter than ever
- 0:10Speaker 1: after the triple head up. Will this finally be McLaren's
- 0:14Speaker 1: chance to capitalize on its good form after weeks of
- 0:16Speaker 1: mistakes and elsewhere, Adrian Newey launches his long awaited Red
- 0:21Speaker 1: Bull hypercar with an eyewatering price tag. My name is
- 0:24Speaker 1: Michael Lamonato, motorsport riter for Fox Sports Australia. It's great
- 0:27Speaker 1: to have your company, and the company of my co
- 0:30Speaker 1: host from Speed Cafe. He knows exactly how to say
- 0:33Speaker 1: Grand Prix of Hungary in Hungarian. It's Matt Cotch.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Hi, how are you now? Mate?
- 0:42Speaker 3: I butcher things in my somewhat half Australian, half English accent,
- 0:47Speaker 3: so throwing just even a hint of French or Italian
- 0:50Speaker 3: there and I just yeah, it all comes unraveled. Then
- 0:53Speaker 3: you're throwing some Hungarian and they're not a stew mate,
- 0:57Speaker 3: not gonna happen.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I feel like whenever I've gone to the Hungarian Grand Prix,
- 1:02Speaker 1: I'm always surprised at how absolutely unfamiliar the language is.
- 1:06Speaker 1: It sounds like a very boring talk topic, but after
- 1:07Speaker 1: so much of Europe, obviously all the other languages are familiar,
- 1:10Speaker 1: even if you do understand them. Even if you go
- 1:12Speaker 1: to Japan, you know what, it looks like you had
- 1:14Speaker 1: a hungry and it's like, man, what's this. I don't
- 1:16Speaker 1: understand this at all.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And a lot of people don't speak English as well.
- 1:19Speaker 3: So yeah, absolutely bugging if you get stuck somewhere, which
- 1:23Speaker 3: in the days before the Internet, which is when I
- 1:25Speaker 3: first did the Hungarian Grand Prix, it was yeah, that
- 1:28Speaker 3: was that was that was an exciting time.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I spent a long time.
- 1:32Speaker 3: There's a service station or a garage just outside the circuit.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I spent a long time there waiting for a fax
- 1:39Speaker 2: one morning.
- 1:40Speaker 3: That's a whole different, a whole different story that one
- 1:43Speaker 3: day I'll share.
- 1:45Speaker 1: It was really in many respects, and this somewhat off topic,
- 1:47Speaker 1: but the original broad venture race, if you're like, we've
- 1:51Speaker 1: become used to be fun racing in sort of newer
- 1:54Speaker 1: novel territories, but this was originally behind the iron curtain.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So it's come a long way since then. No longer
- 1:59Speaker 1: feels novel. I mean, it's been very much part of
- 2:01Speaker 1: what has been for what is it since the eighties?
- 2:03Speaker 1: How many years of.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Six was first appearance?
- 2:07Speaker 1: Yet there you go, So we're approaching forty years if
- 2:10Speaker 1: is correct.
- 2:11Speaker 3: There's been a year or two there through COVID that
- 2:13Speaker 3: it didn't appear, but yeah, otherwise it's been a main stage.
- 2:18Speaker 3: It's it's crazy to think. And there's new facilities there
- 2:22Speaker 3: this year as well. They're saying goodbye to some of
- 2:24Speaker 3: the stuff that was there when the Iron Curtain was
- 2:26Speaker 3: a thing.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah, which is remarkable. I feel like as long as
- 2:29Speaker 1: I've been doing that race, they've been saying it was
- 2:30Speaker 1: going to happen and were furnishing.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Anyway, we'll get to the Hungarian Grand Prix and what
- 2:36Speaker 1: to expect this weekend a little bit later on, but
- 2:38Speaker 1: Matt let's first start off with the five new stories
- 2:41Speaker 1: of the week. It has been an off week for
- 2:43Speaker 1: Formula One. It does really feel like everyone needed that
- 2:46Speaker 1: off week. I think it has been relatively quiet Playoff
- 2:48Speaker 1: one standards, but of course there's plenty to talk about,
- 2:50Speaker 1: and we're going to give you the five stories in
- 2:52Speaker 1: just five minutes. Matt, let me start with the RB seventeen.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It's Adrian Neui's final Red Bull task the unveiling of
- 2:59Speaker 1: his RB seventeen hypercar, the name being the red Bull
- 3:03Speaker 1: car that wasn't made during COVID. It explains a slightly
- 3:05Speaker 1: unusual name. Only fifty are going to be made. The
- 3:08Speaker 1: price tag is around ten million Australian dollars per car.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Not bad. I don't know if he gets all of
- 3:14Speaker 1: that himself. I hope he's got a good deal of this.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Well.
- 3:17Speaker 3: This is a little bit like the was it the
- 3:19Speaker 3: Valkyrie and the Vulcan and those sorts of things that
- 3:21Speaker 3: were made during the Aston Martin partnership, and what people
- 3:25Speaker 3: do with these guys. I don't buy them necessarily to
- 3:27Speaker 3: drive them there. They're effectively like a bank account. You
- 3:31Speaker 3: buy them and they appreciate value, so you can drive
- 3:33Speaker 3: them for a little bit, you know, pay ten million
- 3:36Speaker 3: for it, and then in ten years time you sell
- 3:38Speaker 3: it for twenty million and you're better than having left
- 3:40Speaker 3: the money in the bank.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Adrian Nui is essentially your bank teller in this situation,
- 3:45Speaker 1: which is a very exciting way to think about it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But keep your eyes out for that. When it was
- 3:48Speaker 1: debut of the Goodwood Vessel of Speed over the weekend,
- 3:51Speaker 1: plenty of photios and videos doing the rounds, but Adrian
- 3:54Speaker 1: whu He has also been in the news for, of
- 3:55Speaker 1: course other reasons. We continue to wonder where he's going
- 3:57Speaker 1: to be working next year. You're in twenty twenty five
- 4:01Speaker 1: after he leaves Red Bull Racing. Very specifically in the
- 4:03Speaker 1: first quarter of twenty twenty five, word out of Italy
- 4:07Speaker 1: Matt is that Ferrari's no longer top of priorities, with
- 4:10Speaker 1: CEO Benedettovigna reportedly booking at the salary. And also, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: this is what I find interesting, the potential for him
- 4:17Speaker 1: to disrupt the team they're building.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you've got to.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Think that he's what is he sixty five, He's only
- 4:24Speaker 3: got a couple of years realistically left here, maybe five.
- 4:27Speaker 3: It's going to be eighteen months before he could have
- 4:28Speaker 3: a real impact, and he might come in and completely
- 4:31Speaker 3: tear up what they're doing and set the team back
- 4:33Speaker 3: two or three years to go down a different path.
- 4:35Speaker 3: So chances are that path might be right. But then
- 4:39Speaker 3: by the time they're on the path, he's only got
- 4:40Speaker 3: a couple of years left before retirement, and it's a
- 4:43Speaker 3: big gamble. But I think it's a big gamble no
- 4:45Speaker 3: matter where he goes, and ultimately is it better to
- 4:47Speaker 3: have him or to let him go to arrival?
- 4:50Speaker 2: Personally, I'd pay him the cash.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Well, the rumor is now that Aston Martin's top of
- 4:54Speaker 1: that pile, potentially as well McLaren being in the mix,
- 4:57Speaker 1: but you won't know, likely until September matdist Oh, are
- 5:00Speaker 1: you right during the week about race hosting fees? That
- 5:02Speaker 1: magical number that pumps up F one's banking Speaking of
- 5:05Speaker 1: bank accounts, F one's bank accounts, it's relatively closely guarded
- 5:09Speaker 1: secret for most races, even those that are state backed.
- 5:12Speaker 1: What have you found?
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so about seven hundred and seventy million dollars a
- 5:16Speaker 3: year going to F one's coffers. This was not the
- 5:21Speaker 3: work of a moment, not the work of sticking my
- 5:23Speaker 3: finger in the air and seeing which way the wind
- 5:25Speaker 3: is blowing. There's a bit of research that went into this.
- 5:28Speaker 3: There's about eight events next year that I due for expiring.
- 5:31Speaker 3: If you plot them out on a scattergraph, you can
- 5:34Speaker 3: see they all pay well under the odds. So things
- 5:36Speaker 3: like Monaco they need to pay more, so does the
- 5:38Speaker 3: Belgian Grand Prix, So to the Italian Grand Prix.
- 5:40Speaker 2: That's risk here.
- 5:42Speaker 3: But interestingly the Australian Grand Prix thirty seven million dollars
- 5:45Speaker 3: this year, but is actually quite cheap if you.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Look at it in the grand scheme of things.
- 5:50Speaker 3: It's got a contract until twenty thirty seven, so that actually.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Leaves it below average as it stands.
- 5:56Speaker 3: The caveat being that there is a new contract that
- 5:59Speaker 3: comes into a force next year, so that's likely to
- 6:01Speaker 3: change the hosting fee. But yeah, Ultimately the bottom line
- 6:04Speaker 3: is seven hundred and seventy million dollars going into Formula
- 6:06Speaker 3: one's bank account each year just on race hosting fees.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It's a lot of money, with the other thirds broken
- 6:12Speaker 1: up by advertising and television, which we're all paying for
- 6:16Speaker 1: one way or another. I suppose let's lou move back
- 6:18Speaker 1: on to a track of some kind British Grand Prix
- 6:21Speaker 1: track Silverston. But during the week Liam Lawson was on
- 6:24Speaker 1: track in an up to date Red Bull Racing car
- 6:26Speaker 1: in a private filming day test. This is officially not
- 6:29Speaker 1: a performance thing, but of course they learned performance things
- 6:31Speaker 1: about it. But of course the story here is that
- 6:33Speaker 1: Liam Lawson is in the frame to potentially get into
- 6:36Speaker 1: a car owned by Red Bull racing after the mid
- 6:38Speaker 1: season break. But Matda, I'm like last year when it
- 6:41Speaker 1: was all Daniel Ricardo mania following his own Proori titest
- 6:44Speaker 1: at Silverston. Well, there hasn't been that sudden explosion of hype.
- 6:49Speaker 3: There hasn't been, but the caveat being that it was wet,
- 6:51Speaker 3: so getting any sort of meaningful data out of it
- 6:53Speaker 3: is difficult. You couldn't, like, for like his lap versus
- 6:57Speaker 3: what happened at the Grand Prix a couple of days earlier,
- 6:59Speaker 3: so those comparisons were out the window. Perhaps a better
- 7:02Speaker 3: comparison would have been Christian Horner churning some laps in
- 7:04Speaker 3: what was an RB eight or something. Wasn't it a
- 7:07Speaker 3: few days ago? So yeah, you're right, there hasn't been
- 7:10Speaker 3: the hype. But I also seem to think he's not
- 7:12Speaker 3: in contingent for Red Bull Drive at best. He's looking
- 7:14Speaker 3: at RB. Should Daniel Riccardo be moved up if Perez
- 7:18Speaker 3: is sacked. There's a lot of ifs in that. In
- 7:19Speaker 3: that so yeah, I don't think we can take too
- 7:22Speaker 3: much out of it. It's it's essentially getting a read
- 7:25Speaker 3: on him to make a decision given that his contract
- 7:27Speaker 3: clause is up.
- 7:28Speaker 1: In September, and he does have an RB test in season,
- 7:32Speaker 1: test again later on in the year, and finally to
- 7:36Speaker 1: the driver market, which still very unsettled. Not much has
- 7:38Speaker 1: changed as last week, but widespread reports now are increasingly
- 7:42Speaker 1: anyway that Hass could be announcing it's signed s van
- 7:44Speaker 1: knock On as soon as potentially this week, maybe by
- 7:46Speaker 1: the time you've even heard this podcast. Who knows. That's
- 7:49Speaker 1: the first piece of the puzzle that's moving without Carlos
- 7:52Speaker 1: Science deciding where he wants to go. But then again,
- 7:54Speaker 1: Carlos Science was never really connected to HAS to begin with.
- 7:58Speaker 3: No hands up if you're surprised at S, but I
- 8:00Speaker 3: don't kind of ended up at HAS. That's been pretty
- 8:01Speaker 3: much an open secret for quite some time. Even though
- 8:04Speaker 3: they're all trying to play coy about it. We all
- 8:06Speaker 3: know where he's going and where he's going to end up.
- 8:08Speaker 3: So yeah, no great surprise, is it a great move?
- 8:12Speaker 3: Remains to be seen. Obviously, Hass has been linked to
- 8:15Speaker 3: all sorts of things, including Toyota.
- 8:17Speaker 2: In the last week or so.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Maybe there are bright things happening in Hass's future that
- 8:22Speaker 3: Estherbarron is is on the press ofe of that we
- 8:24Speaker 3: just don't know about yet.
- 8:26Speaker 1: H has in any case at the moment ahead of
- 8:28Speaker 1: helping the constructors standings on paper, it is.
- 8:31Speaker 2: A good step forward.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, good move, and we'll see what happens after that.
- 8:34Speaker 1: They are the five new stories of the week. It's
- 8:36Speaker 1: an interesting room you touched on there the Toyota has
- 8:38Speaker 1: thing with. Will be more on that undoubtedly in future weeks.
- 8:42Speaker 1: But Matt, let's start with our first major topic of
- 8:45Speaker 1: the week. We sees this last week. This was following,
- 8:47Speaker 1: of course, the British Grand Prix that McLaren did not win,
- 8:50Speaker 1: despite having been at several occasions in position to win
- 8:53Speaker 1: it in several different configurations as well, with one car,
- 8:56Speaker 1: two cars, one car in a different order. They're strong
- 8:59Speaker 1: even to be made that after the last in fact,
- 9:02Speaker 1: six rounds, I'm willing to say, almost dating all the
- 9:04Speaker 1: way back to Lando Norris's first in Miami, that McLaren
- 9:07Speaker 1: should have way more wins than just one this season
- 9:11Speaker 1: and of course therefore be much closer in both championship standings.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I've done and I do enjoy doing this A purely
- 9:17Speaker 1: hypothetical version of the championship for Fox sports dot com
- 9:20Speaker 1: dot Au late last week specifically the last six races,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and I want to run you through these map and
- 9:25Speaker 1: let me know what you think it's starting.
- 9:27Speaker 2: This sounds good of exciting, Yes.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Emilia Rana Grand Prix won by Max was staffing in reality,
- 9:32Speaker 1: but of course that's only after Oscar Piastri, who qualified second,
- 9:35Speaker 1: was devoted to fifth through with a good penalty for
- 9:37Speaker 1: impeding during qualifying. That was the team's fault. He was
- 9:40Speaker 1: the fast McLaren driver that weekend, and McLaren challenged Red
- 9:43Speaker 1: Bull really quite closely in that final SITTLANDA and I
- 9:46Speaker 1: have finished less than a second behind Max. If Piastre
- 9:49Speaker 1: had started second, A challenged Max with entirety of the race.
- 9:51Speaker 1: For the purpose of this hypothetical, I'm willing to contemplate
- 9:55Speaker 1: the idea that could have been Oscar Piastre's first victory
- 9:58Speaker 1: and therefore there would have been a small points win
- 10:00Speaker 1: in McLaren's favor. Let's go to Monaco, but Oscar Piastri
- 10:03Speaker 1: didn't put together his best three sectors in qualifying. Had
- 10:05Speaker 1: he done so, he would have qualified charl Leclair and
- 10:08Speaker 1: his best three sectors, and of course qualifying in monocon
- 10:11Speaker 1: Pole is practically a victory. Certainly the Monaco Grandfrix we
- 10:14Speaker 1: got this year. It was an absolute slam dunk victory
- 10:17Speaker 1: with no pit stops required. Canada, we know this quite well.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Lando Norris was leading with some really incredible pace early
- 10:23Speaker 1: in the race, didn't pick for that first safety car.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Maybe had a chance to retake the lead late in
- 10:29Speaker 1: the race, had his overcut attempt over maxim Staff and
- 10:32Speaker 1: been maybe one lap shorter. That's debatable, but really the
- 10:34Speaker 1: thing that cost him was that first stop. In Spain.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Lando Norris from Pole got a poor start. Both his
- 10:39Speaker 1: pit stops were slower than Vestafans by one point three seconds.
- 10:42Speaker 1: He finished only two point two seconds behind Max after
- 10:45Speaker 1: quite an exciting chase in the final stint in Austria,
- 10:48Speaker 1: where we know it happened in Austria, they crashed into
- 10:50Speaker 1: one another. Maybe if Lando Norris had been somewhat more
- 10:54Speaker 1: circumspect about how hard Max was going to be, could
- 10:57Speaker 1: have found a way pass a lap or two later.
- 10:59Speaker 1: But I mean, that's perhabsolutely bit harsh to him. Finally, though,
- 11:02Speaker 1: at Silverston, they left Piastri out too long for his
- 11:05Speaker 1: first stops, left Norris out too long at his second stops.
- 11:08Speaker 1: They gave him the wrong tire, the stop was slow lost,
- 11:11Speaker 1: not even lost to Lewis Hamilton, but also to Maxis
- 11:13Speaker 1: Stappan who beat him to second place. If you would
- 11:15Speaker 1: have award all of those wins, and they are many,
- 11:17Speaker 1: I know it's a stretch, but they're far from implausible.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Orlando Norris's lead over Maxis Sappins lead rather over Lando
- 11:22Speaker 1: Norris would be just twenty one points at this point
- 11:24Speaker 1: of the season, and McLaren would be leading Red Bull
- 11:27Speaker 1: Racing by only eight points. It's a lot of mischances.
- 11:31Speaker 2: That's a hell of a thing, isn't it.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And I think you've probably got let McLaren off lightly
- 11:36Speaker 3: there because in Austria, you know, if Oscar hadn't have
- 11:39Speaker 3: been done for track living, well, yeah, still he's still
- 11:41Speaker 3: dirty about that. He's as dirty as as tires.
- 11:44Speaker 2: From the gravel, which is not very dirty though.
- 11:50Speaker 3: This is a really bad analogy, wasn't it. But yeah,
- 11:54Speaker 3: he's still he's still dirty about that, isn't he. So
- 11:56Speaker 3: he's adamant that he wasn't off out of track limits
- 11:59Speaker 3: or the FA wasn't fair in the way that he
- 12:01Speaker 3: was penalized. So you know, there's potentially a you know
- 12:05Speaker 3: a one two or maybe a one three there with
- 12:07Speaker 3: with Max who knows. Yeah, I mean that's that's a
- 12:10Speaker 3: hell of it a swing even as it stands. You know,
- 12:15Speaker 3: after round six, what was round six? That was the
- 12:18Speaker 3: Miami Grand Prix. So after round six McLaren was one
- 12:25Speaker 3: hundred and fifteen points behind Red Bull and the Constructors Championship.
- 12:29Speaker 3: It's now seventy eight points. That's a thirty seven point
- 12:34Speaker 3: swing off top my head in six races.
- 12:39Speaker 2: That's that's a pretty good turnaround.
- 12:41Speaker 3: You there's a long way to go, obviously, they need
- 12:43Speaker 3: to basically get that three times over to catch Red
- 12:46Speaker 3: Bull in the championship. But if you take into account
- 12:50Speaker 3: what you've just said, and there are realistic chances at
- 12:54Speaker 3: each of the six events that you've just mentioned, we've
- 12:57Speaker 3: got a hell of a championship final, I hads. And
- 12:59Speaker 3: this speaks to the lack of preparedness on McClaren's part.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I think it's ahead of its own schedule. We said
- 13:07Speaker 3: this before. It's sort of it's arrived at the party,
- 13:10Speaker 3: but the party hasn't started. You know, it's got to
- 13:15Speaker 3: the party too early, and it's sitting in the car
- 13:17Speaker 3: park waiting to go everyone to turn up because Austria
- 13:22Speaker 3: last year just accelerated things so quickly. It didn't expect
- 13:25Speaker 3: to turn the season around like it did. It didn't
- 13:27Speaker 3: expect to be a front runner like it was this year.
- 13:31Speaker 3: I think the way it started the year is the
- 13:32Speaker 3: way it sort of saw things progressing, and then we
- 13:37Speaker 3: got to Miami. Whatever they did in Miami, it was
- 13:39Speaker 3: just you know, it's like Austria again, wasn't it.
- 13:41Speaker 2: It's transformed that car and they've.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Just kept bolting on performance while Red Bull is struggling
- 13:47Speaker 3: and the bolts on performance consistently, which is the most
- 13:50Speaker 3: impressive part. The problem is you know that they're going
- 13:54Speaker 3: up against the best in the world in terms of rebel.
- 13:58Speaker 3: There's seasoned veterans out running at the front, undercutting, overcutting,
- 14:03Speaker 3: just a communication with drivers. If you listen back to
- 14:06Speaker 3: the radio chatter between McLaren's drivers and particularly Red Bull
- 14:11Speaker 3: and Max at the British Grand Prix night and day
- 14:16Speaker 3: different So it was very clear, very concise from Red
- 14:19Speaker 3: Bull and very muddied from from McLaren. So the good
- 14:24Speaker 3: thing is that these are these are operational things that
- 14:25Speaker 3: can be fixed. But it just goes to show that
- 14:29Speaker 3: you need everything to be right. A fast car and
- 14:32Speaker 3: two fast drivers aren't enough. An ability to deliver on
- 14:35Speaker 3: a single lap isn't enough. An ability to string a
- 14:38Speaker 3: race stint together is enough. You're going to be able
- 14:40Speaker 3: to do it for every state of the race and
- 14:43Speaker 3: then in those pit stops, and then do it at
- 14:45Speaker 3: every event.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And that's a huge, huge challenge.
- 14:49Speaker 1: In It's why Oscar Piastre says the hard part's already
- 14:52Speaker 1: been done by McLaren, and that is having a car
- 14:54Speaker 1: that's competitive. That's not to downplay all the learning that
- 14:58Speaker 1: starts to take place, and this is to slam McLaren
- 15:01Speaker 1: is saying, what have you done or you've wasted all
- 15:02Speaker 1: of your opportunities, because, like you say, this is still
- 15:06Speaker 1: part of the process. They've done that hard part, which
- 15:08Speaker 1: is building up the car. The reason this is relatively
- 15:10Speaker 1: easier is, like you say, well, you can improve these
- 15:13Speaker 1: things really weak to week. It's just about fine tuning
- 15:16Speaker 1: those processes. Even just experience. Just going through these particular
- 15:20Speaker 1: scenarios mean similar scenarios. These mistakes are unlikely to be repeated.
- 15:25Speaker 1: This is something that Andrea Stella continues to allude to
- 15:28Speaker 1: doing a really good job as a team principle in
- 15:30Speaker 1: these circumstances as well. I think the more we see
- 15:32Speaker 1: Stella in the team principal role, the more impressive he is.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Because it's one thing to have taken over the team
- 15:38Speaker 1: when it was almost in a crisis at the beginning
- 15:40Speaker 1: of last year, completely restructuring it, then taking control of Attempt.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Didn't expect to suddenly be competitive last year, managing Oscar
- 15:47Speaker 1: Piastri becoming more competitive as well and learning through his
- 15:50Speaker 1: first season, then this year is suddenly becoming a front runner.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I think he's doing a really good job. I think
- 15:56Speaker 1: that the second half of the year will see a
- 15:57Speaker 1: more consistently competitive MCN and that's where things, I think
- 16:01Speaker 1: get kind of interesting because if we look at the
- 16:03Speaker 1: trajectory of these two teams, McLaren, in the last six races,
- 16:07Speaker 1: as you said that, it's thirty something points, I've outscored
- 16:09Speaker 1: Red Bull Rights. It's just over six points per rates.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Now Red Bull leads in the constructor standings by seventy
- 16:15Speaker 1: eight points. If that trend continues, red Bull would win
- 16:19Speaker 1: by only four points. So let's call that the margin
- 16:22Speaker 1: for error. And now we kind of understand the context
- 16:24Speaker 1: of why Red Bull Racing is panicking so much about
- 16:26Speaker 1: the performance of Sergio Perriot's because that shows it up
- 16:31Speaker 1: that the Constructors Championship really is vulnerable. But there's another
- 16:33Speaker 1: way of looking at these points I found quite interesting,
- 16:35Speaker 1: which is that if you go through that hypothetical championship
- 16:37Speaker 1: I ran through the swing against for Staffen or the
- 16:41Speaker 1: points for Staffan would lose is only sixteen, but Norris
- 16:44Speaker 1: would gain forty seven. Red Bull would lose only twenty,
- 16:47Speaker 1: but mclar would gain sixty six. It's not that Max
- 16:49Speaker 1: is not getting the most out of it or Red Bull,
- 16:51Speaker 1: at least with one car, is not getting the most
- 16:52Speaker 1: out of it. These points are just on the table
- 16:55Speaker 1: for McLaren to take. So if they just sharpen themselves up,
- 16:58Speaker 1: it's almost close to I don't want to say out
- 17:01Speaker 1: of Red Bull's hands, because obviously if they just start
- 17:02Speaker 1: dominating again then it will be in their hands. But
- 17:05Speaker 1: if McLaren just sharpens up at this break, it's not
- 17:08Speaker 1: even a question that they will catch and maybe even
- 17:09Speaker 1: pass Thredball racing, and that's almost a new paradigm for
- 17:13Speaker 1: Formula One. I almost can't quite believe that we are
- 17:15Speaker 1: really talking about a Constructor's Championship challenge.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But then we're also relying on a status quo at
- 17:21Speaker 2: Red Bull.
- 17:22Speaker 3: You know, Sergio Perez not lifting or a change, They're
- 17:25Speaker 3: not having some sort of positive impact.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And that's not to say, you know, if they change,
- 17:30Speaker 2: it's a risk.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Regardless of who you put in there, be that Liam Lawson,
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yuki Sonoda, Daniel Ricardo, all of them are a risk.
- 17:41Speaker 3: And that's the challenge that the Christian of Horn in
- 17:44Speaker 3: Our faces. It goes back to last week's episode, what
- 17:46Speaker 3: is the least worst option? Because that's kind of what
- 17:50Speaker 3: he is faced with. Now, what's going to guarantee you?
- 17:53Speaker 3: It needs effectively a point or two two points a
- 17:57Speaker 3: race out of Perez?
- 18:00Speaker 2: Stupid, it sounds it's kind of enough.
- 18:02Speaker 3: It just about moves the goal post, given the start
- 18:06Speaker 3: to the year they had. It just about moves the
- 18:08Speaker 3: goal posts far enough away that Red Bull can tease
- 18:13Speaker 3: it through. But I mean that's that's expecting Sergio Paris
- 18:17Speaker 3: to finish ninth in every race. I mean that they
- 18:19Speaker 3: can realistically have bigger ambitions than that and higher expectations.
- 18:25Speaker 3: I honestly think the championship will go to Red Bull
- 18:28Speaker 3: and or go to red Bull easily. But I'm excited
- 18:31Speaker 3: about not necessarily what this means for this year, but
- 18:34Speaker 3: what this means for the next year, because what McLaren
- 18:38Speaker 3: is doing is getting all of these cobwebs out.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Of the system.
- 18:43Speaker 3: It's learning how to win, it's getting comfortable at the front,
- 18:46Speaker 3: it's learning how to battle an out smart and you know,
- 18:50Speaker 3: shadow box with red Bull. Once it's comfortable and it's
- 18:55Speaker 3: skinned doing all of those sorts of things, we get
- 18:58Speaker 3: to next year. Everything resets when we get to Melbourne,
- 19:04Speaker 3: Belville being round one next year as opposed to Bahrain,
- 19:08Speaker 3: and we've got a championship final from round one, not
- 19:11Speaker 3: hopefully towards the end, assuming red Bull doesn't pick up
- 19:14Speaker 3: at McLaren keeps its current trajectory, we've got a championshipattle
- 19:17Speaker 3: from round one.
- 19:17Speaker 2: That's the way I'm looking at this.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I'm not so interested in this year's championship for me,
- 19:22Speaker 3: it's what it means for next year going forward.
- 19:26Speaker 1: It's just a shame it feels like everything's clicked this
- 19:29Speaker 1: year five rounds too late. This is all the points
- 19:32Speaker 1: gap we're talking about here was almost all accumulated by
- 19:34Speaker 1: red Bull and Max in the first five races of
- 19:36Speaker 1: the season, after which McLaren brought that Miami upgrade and
- 19:40Speaker 1: suddenly became very competitive, and shortly after that Mercedes became
- 19:43Speaker 1: competitive and Ferrari's what's hard to know exactly where that
- 19:46Speaker 1: and the mix at the moment. We'll find out a
- 19:48Speaker 1: bit more over the next two weeks. But had it
- 19:50Speaker 1: only started, had we only had a regular nineteen or
- 19:53Speaker 1: twenty race calendar, then we'd be laughing. This would be great,
- 19:57Speaker 1: one of the all time great seasons. But yes, like
- 19:59Speaker 1: you say, hope that's a case for twenty twenty five.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Let's look ahead now, Matt, to this weekends Hungarian Grand Prix,
- 20:07Speaker 1: the first of the double header that closes out this
- 20:10Speaker 1: part of the season before the mid season break. There's
- 20:12Speaker 1: a lot going on in this next two races, quite
- 20:15Speaker 1: a lot on the line for a couple of different
- 20:16Speaker 1: teams and drivers. We've talked quite a bit, especially last episode,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and you can go back and find that in your
- 20:21Speaker 1: podcast app of Choice about the problem and question facing
- 20:25Speaker 1: Red bull Racing, and that potentially involves, of course, Daniel, Ricardo,
- 20:28Speaker 1: Lee and Wilson. You just noticed your pairs. What's going
- 20:30Speaker 1: to happen there? Much of that's going to be decided
- 20:32Speaker 1: after the next two rounds. What I'm interested to find
- 20:35Speaker 1: out now is if we can get and if it's
- 20:38Speaker 1: even worth asking what the form guide is because it
- 20:40Speaker 1: seems so changeable. Who's going to win the next two
- 20:43Speaker 1: races for the first time in a long time is
- 20:44Speaker 1: an extremely difficult question to answer. There are a couple
- 20:48Speaker 1: of reasons you might want to think it could be. Mercedes,
- 20:51Speaker 1: despite being so poor over the last two years, took
- 20:53Speaker 1: pole position at both of them with through Russell and
- 20:55Speaker 1: Lewis Hamilton in twenty two and twenty three respectively. Lewis
- 20:58Speaker 1: Hamilton is the most successful driver of all time here
- 21:00Speaker 1: with eight wins, so quld equal that record, equaling ninth
- 21:03Speaker 1: win if he wins this weekend. And there are more
- 21:06Speaker 1: upgrades to come for Mercedes this weekend. We know as
- 21:10Speaker 1: we sort of talked about last week about that Mercedes
- 21:12Speaker 1: is back in the mix. I'm interested to see if
- 21:15Speaker 1: they're actually back in that regular race winning mix rather
- 21:20Speaker 1: than just being at the point end.
- 21:21Speaker 2: In general.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it's going to be it's going to be a
- 21:25Speaker 3: scorcher in Hungary and it's always hot there, but you know,
- 21:28Speaker 3: Budapest and the Circuit's only fifteen kilometers out of the
- 21:32Speaker 3: circuit out of the city, but Budapest is in the
- 21:35Speaker 3: middle of an extreme heat wave. You know, we're talking
- 21:38Speaker 3: mid thirties for the last week or so, creeping up
- 21:41Speaker 3: to around forties over the weekend.
- 21:43Speaker 2: I was keeping half an eye on it even now.
- 21:46Speaker 2: The long range stuff.
- 21:47Speaker 3: We're talking thirty four degrees on Friday, thirty three on Saturday,
- 21:50Speaker 3: thirty four on Sunday, and that's with the cloud cover,
- 21:54Speaker 3: so it's going to be hot. I'm unconvinced. I may
- 22:00Speaker 3: to be convinced. It's probably a better way to say
- 22:01Speaker 3: about Mercedes in hot conditions. It works well in the
- 22:06Speaker 3: cooler conditions. We saw that in Canada, we saw that
- 22:09Speaker 3: in Silverston. Let's see what the updates bring. But I'm
- 22:13Speaker 3: not convinced they're yet in that conversation day in day out.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Like we say, McLaren is now with Red Bull. I
- 22:21Speaker 3: think we can go into to this weekend looking at
- 22:24Speaker 3: Red Bull and McLaren realistically being contenders for the big trophy,
- 22:29Speaker 3: the one that Landa will try not to drop this year.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Ferrari. If they get it together, they can be in there.
- 22:37Speaker 3: But they get it together less often than not, less
- 22:42Speaker 3: often than not, So I.
- 22:47Speaker 2: I'm curious to see where Mercedes ends up.
- 22:49Speaker 3: That's to me the big one this weekend, because if
- 22:53Speaker 3: Mercedes starts getting too the mix, it makes Red Bulls
- 22:55Speaker 3: job easier. And the reason I say that is it
- 22:58Speaker 3: will start taking points away from mc red Bull.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Losing points at this stage doesn't matter.
- 23:03Speaker 3: It's going to be diminishing returns in terms of the
- 23:08Speaker 3: impact it has on its constructors Championship advantage. It will
- 23:12Speaker 3: hurt Red Bull, sorry, hurt McClaren far more than will
- 23:15Speaker 3: hurt Red Bull. So I kind of want Mercedes in
- 23:19Speaker 3: there so that we've got six drivers, potentially eight drivers
- 23:22Speaker 3: vying for a win on any given weekend. I'm being
- 23:25Speaker 3: generous to Sergio, but at the same time I kind
- 23:30Speaker 3: of don't because then you've got abilities and outside chance,
- 23:34Speaker 3: but you've then got a chance of a championship battle.
- 23:37Speaker 3: And in the grand scheme of things, what's that's a
- 23:41Speaker 3: big What gets you out of your seat?
- 23:43Speaker 2: Mike?
- 23:44Speaker 3: Is it a combative races or a combative championship?
- 23:49Speaker 1: Good question.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I like it.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I'm very on board with the idea of a constructor's
- 23:54Speaker 1: championship battle because I can't think of the last time
- 23:57Speaker 1: we got a battle that was purely for the constru
- 24:00Speaker 1: Tructors Championship. Is always the driver's title attached almost always,
- 24:04Speaker 1: I'm trying.
- 24:05Speaker 3: To think back now quickly fourteen, twenty fourteen, say, surely not.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Twenty fourteen, twenty ten, but there was also the driver's
- 24:14Speaker 1: title attached. That that's what I mean. Last time we
- 24:16Speaker 1: had a pure constructors.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Title twenty one twenty one, the drivers and Mercedes won
- 24:22Speaker 3: the constructors that's.
- 24:24Speaker 1: True, but still to my point, there's still was the
- 24:26Speaker 1: driver's title alive, and that obviously took the attention because still,
- 24:30Speaker 1: while the teams obviously all want to win the constructors
- 24:32Speaker 1: title because there's the prize money element and the prestige
- 24:35Speaker 1: album all that kind of thing, the drivers is the
- 24:37Speaker 1: thing that gets headlines that they sell themselves on. So
- 24:41Speaker 1: if that's decided on the one hand in Max's favor,
- 24:44Speaker 1: it makes the battle then really quite tactical, because if
- 24:47Speaker 1: we've if everyone decides that Max is too far away
- 24:49Speaker 1: to catch, and that's pretty much the case unless something
- 24:52Speaker 1: really bizarre happened in the second half of the year,
- 24:54Speaker 1: then sudding all the drivers really have to play the
- 24:57Speaker 1: team game and will be called upon to play the
- 24:59Speaker 1: team game because it's the only thing that's alive to win.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I like a good race, obviously, but the broader narrative
- 25:05Speaker 1: I think is more exciting. The idea that Red Bull
- 25:07Speaker 1: Racing might lose the Constructors Championship so relatively early at
- 25:11Speaker 1: what we might term this second dynasty as well, I
- 25:15Speaker 1: think is a really interesting storyline because by rights, they
- 25:19Speaker 1: should have it pretty easy this year, even though it's
- 25:21Speaker 1: so competitive. If Sergio Perez were pulling his weight, it
- 25:24Speaker 1: should be sorted by now, and it's potential they've missed
- 25:27Speaker 1: the window to have capitalized on that.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I sort of equate it.
- 25:32Speaker 3: This is a realization that I've just had what you
- 25:35Speaker 3: were speaking there, and I'm a massive cycling fan, to
- 25:39Speaker 3: the point when I was initially I between Imiler and Monica,
- 25:44Speaker 3: I scarved off for a day when saw a.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Stage of the Gero D'taier.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I saw Tana pegn pulature win at the top of
- 25:49Speaker 3: some mountain somewhere as the coldest I've ever been.
- 25:51Speaker 2: In my life.
- 25:53Speaker 3: But if you consider, you know, a big bike race
- 25:57Speaker 3: like the Gero Dtailier or the Volta Spana or probably
- 26:01Speaker 3: more recently the Tour de France.
- 26:03Speaker 2: If you consider that to be a world championship.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Within that, you've got all these individual races that can
- 26:08Speaker 3: be individually very exciting, but then you've got all packaged
- 26:13Speaker 3: up within a month or twenty one days, twenty four days,
- 26:16Speaker 3: by the time you'll take rest days, you've got it
- 26:18Speaker 3: all packaged up, and you've got this narrative that runs
- 26:21Speaker 3: all the way through it. And for me as a
- 26:24Speaker 3: cycling fan, that's what I follow all the way through.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I love watching you know, Mark Cavendish winning his thirty
- 26:29Speaker 3: fifth stage tour at the Tour that was fantastic. You know,
- 26:31Speaker 3: I remember well seeing his first stage winning back in
- 26:33Speaker 3: the day. Seeing those highlights is brilliant. See Goskopiastri's first
- 26:38Speaker 3: win is going to be brilliant. It's going to happen,
- 26:40Speaker 3: as you know, it's a matter of time, but seeing
- 26:42Speaker 3: that will be brilliant. But for me, the biggest story
- 26:45Speaker 3: is how the championship is one and watching not necessarily
- 26:49Speaker 3: now and understanding it, but perhaps looking back and seeing
- 26:51Speaker 3: where these leavers are being pulled and how whoever ends
- 26:55Speaker 3: up with the championship. Let fate, let's be honest, it's
- 26:57Speaker 3: going to be Max and red Bull how they actually
- 27:00Speaker 3: achieved that, and I think we're going to reflect at
- 27:02Speaker 3: the end of the year. It's going to be as
- 27:04Speaker 3: you said before, those first five races where they were
- 27:06Speaker 3: so rapid, all the gates will be key, and then
- 27:10Speaker 3: I've just hung on through through the end of it.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I also think that a battle for the driver's championship
- 27:18Speaker 1: is obviously what we're all here for, but it's so rare.
- 27:20Speaker 1: You get a long battle between the two protagonists on track, right.
- 27:24Speaker 1: The driver's title battle normally happens really race to race,
- 27:27Speaker 1: but then when you're talking about constructors points, you tend
- 27:31Speaker 1: to get weirder strategies. You also then tend to get
- 27:34Speaker 1: drivers having to drive defensively against other drivers, and I
- 27:37Speaker 1: actually think that ends up being really exciting. You think
- 27:39Speaker 1: back to I know this is a driver's example, but
- 27:41Speaker 1: Sergio peir Is defending against Lewis Hamilton from that cursed
- 27:44Speaker 1: Abudaw twenty twenty one or even and there was nothing
- 27:47Speaker 1: on the line, But it's not other than pride but hungry.
- 27:49Speaker 1: A couple of years ago, Fernando Alonso versus Lewis Hamilton,
- 27:52Speaker 1: when a driver has to defend and use all of
- 27:54Speaker 1: their wits to defend, which is almost always to do
- 27:57Speaker 1: with constructors and strategy. Was exactly really excited. Well, exactly right.
- 28:02Speaker 1: That's it's exactly right. And they've been doing that four
- 28:04Speaker 1: constructors championship position because there's no glory on the line
- 28:07Speaker 1: for either driver obviously, but there is millions of dollars
- 28:10Speaker 1: on the line for Haa. So I think that's quite interesting.
- 28:12Speaker 1: So we'll wait and see, we'll see how it unfolds.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Ferrari could be you know what's interesting about all this
- 28:17Speaker 1: as well as we never talked about Ferrari in the
- 28:19Speaker 1: context of it being second in the constructor standing, it's
- 28:21Speaker 1: been a lot of times as we mentioned that they
- 28:23Speaker 1: are actually the closest team to Red Bull Racing. Fred
- 28:26Speaker 1: Massa talked to Yeah, talked a good game after a
- 28:29Speaker 1: pretty dow of British Grand Prix in which Color Science
- 28:32Speaker 1: was almost fifty seconds off the lead and Charlocke there
- 28:34Speaker 1: was a lap down that this was the weekend they
- 28:37Speaker 1: had to have to use a phrase similar to last
- 28:40Speaker 1: year's Dutch Grand Prix where they sort of sacrificed all
- 28:43Speaker 1: the practice to understand why the upgrades they brought were working.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Why the car wasn't working, And he pointed out after
- 28:48Speaker 1: the Dutch Grand Prix was Monza, and what was after Singapore,
- 28:52Speaker 1: And of course Monza they are on pole and got
- 28:54Speaker 1: as close as any team was going to get to
- 28:56Speaker 1: winning that race, and then did win in Singapore and
- 28:58Speaker 1: actually bounced back and that really good end of the
- 29:01Speaker 1: season that seemed to spring board them into this year.
- 29:03Speaker 1: So I think this is actually quite an important race
- 29:05Speaker 1: for Ferrari because if there's any truth to the good
- 29:08Speaker 1: game Fred Masser talks, it should show up here. Also
- 29:11Speaker 1: because this circuit should be a bit more favorable to Ferrari.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It's not as high speed. It's certainly not what they
- 29:17Speaker 1: used to say Monaco without the walls of yesteryear, because
- 29:20Speaker 1: it's just not the way it works with these cars.
- 29:22Speaker 1: But it is slower speed. It should be more Ferrari
- 29:25Speaker 1: friendly territory.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a really good point as well. You know,
- 29:28Speaker 3: Ferrari doesn't excel at the extreme high speed. It doesn't
- 29:33Speaker 3: like the really long stuff. We saw that in Spain.
- 29:37Speaker 3: It's not too about the shortest stuff, but you know
- 29:40Speaker 3: there's a little.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Bit of everything. In Hungary.
- 29:43Speaker 3: It's more a medium to high speed circuit. These days,
- 29:47Speaker 3: some of the g's they pull. I saw a video comparison.
- 29:53Speaker 3: I think it was two thousand and four, Michael Schumacher
- 29:56Speaker 3: going through the left hander at the top of the hill,
- 30:00Speaker 3: ending the camel's neck and onto his jawline.
- 30:04Speaker 2: I don't remember what cordinator is.
- 30:05Speaker 3: What we want two three, maybe maybe turn four the
- 30:08Speaker 3: left handed, but he was doing something like two hundred
- 30:10Speaker 3: kilometer is now back in two thousand and four. These
- 30:14Speaker 3: days they're doing two hundred and sixty through the same quarter.
- 30:17Speaker 3: I mean that's extreme. I mean you look at the
- 30:19Speaker 3: cars and fundamentally they don't really look any different, and
- 30:23Speaker 3: yet they're doing sixty kilometers Now, I mean that's proportionally,
- 30:27Speaker 3: that's significant, and you know you multiply that out around
- 30:30Speaker 3: the lap, and yeah, you end up with a high
- 30:33Speaker 3: speed circuit. It's not Monaco in a paddock anymore.
- 30:36Speaker 2: So.
- 30:38Speaker 3: I mean the downside is that overtaking is difficult tired
- 30:42Speaker 3: deg It'd be interesting to see where we land with
- 30:46Speaker 3: that and Probbly they considered it a four out of
- 30:50Speaker 3: five for traction, two out of five for Rashvelt grip,
- 30:54Speaker 3: two out of five for abrasion.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Five out of five for downfalls obviously just bowled.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Out everything you've got on, but it's an average or
- 31:02Speaker 3: they're about circuit four times, So yeah, I don't know
- 31:07Speaker 3: that we get too much help out of those. But yeah,
- 31:11Speaker 3: I don't know it's going to be interesting. Ferrari could
- 31:14Speaker 3: be there, but you're right, I you know that I'll
- 31:17Speaker 3: put an asterisk next to them as a contender, where
- 31:22Speaker 3: you know I'll put a highlighter through Red Bull and McLaren.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it is difficult to pass here, but it does
- 31:28Speaker 1: also feel like the Hungara rings come into its own
- 31:30Speaker 1: in the last i don't know, a few years. It
- 31:32Speaker 1: feels like it's almost consistently a reasonably good race now,
- 31:35Speaker 1: So sometimes circuits just click weirdly and look finally and briefly,
- 31:38Speaker 1: because we do have to get to our ratings. Of
- 31:40Speaker 1: course we wrap this up, we should mention, of course,
- 31:43Speaker 1: RB because there will be a lot of focus on
- 31:45Speaker 1: that team, particularly on Daniel Ricardo on whether he can
- 31:47Speaker 1: haul himself into contention for Sergio Perez a seat in
- 31:49Speaker 1: the second half of the year. Remarkable that could be
- 31:52Speaker 1: either get back to Red Bull Racing or POTSIV sacks.
- 31:55Speaker 1: You won't see that any other support. But this is
- 31:58Speaker 1: a team that was also struggling with up grades after
- 32:00Speaker 1: Barcelona I think it was as well. Has seemed to
- 32:03Speaker 1: have generally wound a lot of those back too, and
- 32:06Speaker 1: have ended up somewhere that's just outside the top ten.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Now feels a lot like HASS might have stepped ahead.
- 32:11Speaker 1: We also got LPNE closing in behind. It's also be
- 32:14Speaker 1: an important race for that team, because there's a lot
- 32:16Speaker 1: of positivity and almost hype, certainly during preseason testing that
- 32:20Speaker 1: RB could be the next team to try and join
- 32:22Speaker 1: those front runners. Still a while away from that, but
- 32:25Speaker 1: it seems like even topping the midfield now seems like
- 32:29Speaker 1: it could be becoming increasingly difficult.
- 32:31Speaker 3: I think preseason there's a little bit of scare mongering
- 32:33Speaker 3: there as well, because there's this whole ab team relationship
- 32:37Speaker 3: and some of that stuff was creeping into the conversation preseason,
- 32:43Speaker 3: being led by one or two rivals. But I mean,
- 32:47Speaker 3: this is a critical weekend for RB, not in terms
- 32:50Speaker 3: of the result and the need to score points, but
- 32:53Speaker 3: the need to get on top of the damned upgrades,
- 32:56Speaker 3: because since whatever they bolted on in Spain, the carl
- 32:59Speaker 3: went back they arrived in Austria with a bit of
- 33:02Speaker 3: a mismatch. They almost ran back to back between the
- 33:06Speaker 3: two cars with mismatched parts to try and get an
- 33:09Speaker 3: idea and a grip on where they're gone wrong, which
- 33:13Speaker 3: in itself is highly alarming because you know what Formula
- 33:18Speaker 3: One team goes to a track and said, oh, we
- 33:20Speaker 3: don't know what the issue is, let's just try a
- 33:22Speaker 3: bit of everything. That's that's a hell of an acknowledgment.
- 33:27Speaker 3: There were positive signs in the race for for Daniel Ricardo,
- 33:32Speaker 3: the Sprint British Grand Prix. Again they were they were nowhere,
- 33:39Speaker 3: and that's that's a concern. Okay, Yuki, would you can
- 33:43Speaker 3: have ninth? I think it was in the end, but
- 33:45Speaker 3: they were inconspicuous. They were over outperformed by by has
- 33:51Speaker 3: in a race where you didn't have a red Bull feature,
- 33:53Speaker 3: you didn't have a Ferrari feature, so they were realistically
- 33:57Speaker 3: in a normal race.
- 33:58Speaker 2: There are eleventh.
- 34:01Speaker 3: But the biggest concern here is those updates and the
- 34:04Speaker 3: correlation issue that they clearly have.
- 34:06Speaker 2: If they don't understand.
- 34:09Speaker 3: After the Belgian Grand Prix, what the hell is going
- 34:11Speaker 3: on with those upgrades, I would expect that team to
- 34:16Speaker 3: plummet like a stone in the back half of the year,
- 34:18Speaker 3: because how can you bring upgrades if you're not confident
- 34:21Speaker 3: in what you're bringing adding performance? Because that's ultimately what
- 34:25Speaker 3: they want to do. They want to improve the car.
- 34:26Speaker 3: It's not necessarily about lap time. It's improving tire wear
- 34:31Speaker 3: or temperature build up or whatever it might be. But
- 34:35Speaker 3: you've got to have confidence that when you bolt the
- 34:38Speaker 3: bit on, it's going to have the expected result, give
- 34:43Speaker 3: or take a few percent, and at the moment it's take.
- 34:45Speaker 2: A lot of percent. And that's that's hugely concerning.
- 34:49Speaker 3: And I guess so I point against the whole amb
- 34:53Speaker 3: team argument because clearly it's not paying too much attention
- 34:56Speaker 3: to Red Bull.
- 34:56Speaker 2: If that was the case.
- 34:58Speaker 1: So quite a bit on the line for couple of
- 35:00Speaker 1: I was and a couple of teams in the Hungarian
- 35:02Speaker 1: Grand Prix. But let's wrap up Matt now in the
- 35:04Speaker 1: new traditional way out points for the week. I want
- 35:08Speaker 1: to start with yes, straightforward one, speaking about what we
- 35:13Speaker 1: talked about earlier on today, and I want to give
- 35:15Speaker 1: sixty six points back to McLaren for a missed opportunities
- 35:18Speaker 1: so far. This season's my first positive rating. I think
- 35:20Speaker 1: of the year.
- 35:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think they were all which you have
- 35:24Speaker 3: last week British Grand Prix minus hundred and sixty eight thousand.
- 35:29Speaker 1: A long way back to them.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Yeah, let's say big half the season, big half. So
- 35:35Speaker 2: what's your ration out for giving McClaren back forty four points?
- 35:39Speaker 1: Well, I just think that I want to get that.
- 35:41Speaker 1: I want to essentially wipe out the first five races.
- 35:44Speaker 1: I want to go back to a traditional eighteen to
- 35:47Speaker 1: twenty race calendar. Unfortunately, the damage was done in those
- 35:50Speaker 1: first few races, so I want to give McLaren some
- 35:52Speaker 1: points back and get us back to where we should
- 35:53Speaker 1: be to get award.
- 35:57Speaker 3: It's like when you play baseball and they mercy after
- 36:00Speaker 3: you year so many runs down. So are you taking
- 36:03Speaker 3: away the first five races a year or the last
- 36:05Speaker 3: five of the couds completely botched?
- 36:07Speaker 2: No? I don't know.
- 36:08Speaker 1: I mean, I look, I'm just using the points that
- 36:10Speaker 1: they've lost. I want to give them back the I
- 36:12Speaker 1: want to give them back the advantage they should have.
- 36:14Speaker 3: So sixty sixty six points right, okay, all right, I'm
- 36:21Speaker 3: I'm going to give three hundred and twenty nine points
- 36:23Speaker 3: to Ralph Schumacher because that's that's the number of points
- 36:27Speaker 3: that he scored during during his career, and it's you know,
- 36:31Speaker 3: he's made some revelations about his personal life on social
- 36:34Speaker 3: media in the last week.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Or so, and I think that's really all we need
- 36:38Speaker 2: to say about it.
- 36:38Speaker 3: He battled through his entire career, you know, pretending to
- 36:42Speaker 3: be someone in the years, and it's fabulous is now
- 36:44Speaker 3: able to be someone that he is and it's great
- 36:46Speaker 3: for the sport.
- 36:47Speaker 2: So plus three hundred and twenty nine points to to
- 36:50Speaker 2: Ralf Schumacher.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Doubled his whole career earnings. There you go, in one shot.
- 36:55Speaker 1: I've got another positive point to give, just one, one
- 36:59Speaker 1: positive point to Christian Horner.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Should hear hello, Yes.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Christian Horner for not crashing Sebastian Vedel's Red Bull car
- 37:06Speaker 1: at Goodwood remarkable late call ups fashion Mettal. I like
- 37:09Speaker 1: the excuse he was just on holiday and good for him.
- 37:12Speaker 1: He's retired. He should be able to go on holiday
- 37:13Speaker 1: with his family. But he didn't crash the car. A
- 37:16Speaker 1: lot of pressure, by all reports there was, there were
- 37:18Speaker 1: genuine nerves to Christian order hadn't driven in a Formula
- 37:21Speaker 1: One car since ninety three, so what's that thirty odd
- 37:23Speaker 1: years thirty one years? Yeah, I think he said, yeah,
- 37:27Speaker 1: since the ninety eight or thereabouts and whatever. That was
- 37:30Speaker 1: probably Formula three car in South the top of my head,
- 37:32Speaker 1: and I had a crack, didn't screw it up. There
- 37:35Speaker 1: were a lot of red bull eras I think a
- 37:36Speaker 1: good would from my understanding, a lot of failures to
- 37:38Speaker 1: start cars and so on. So it wasn't the greatest
- 37:40Speaker 1: showing by the team, but the team boss he did alright,
- 37:43Speaker 1: So is that how many points?
- 37:44Speaker 2: Was that? One? Just one? Just one? All right? One?
- 37:48Speaker 2: He's off the mark, Yeah, exactly. He's already a head
- 37:51Speaker 2: of Logan's sergeant and.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Got him.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Fun fact. Chris Horner raced against Craiglowns in Formulata.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Here's a fun fact.
- 38:04Speaker 2: You go, there, you go.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Funnily enough, Craiglowns was driving for Helmet Marco, so it's
- 38:09Speaker 3: all very very instant.
- 38:11Speaker 1: He belongs on the Helmet Marco pile of disappointing drivers.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Oh that was you, not me.
- 38:18Speaker 1: I'm not saying. I'm not saying he disappointing Helmut Marco.
- 38:23Speaker 3: I think they're extenuating circumstances, particularly given his teammate that
- 38:27Speaker 3: year was was one Pablo Montoya. Yes, yeah, that that
- 38:34Speaker 3: a young one. Pablo would tend to finish a few
- 38:36Speaker 3: drivers careers. I imagine as far as their Formula one
- 38:39Speaker 3: aspirations go. My second point, I've gone positive here as well.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Yuki Sonoda nice plus one thy nine hundred and sixty eight.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Wow, he's definitely in the Red Bull driver.
- 38:51Speaker 3: He because he drove in a modern F one car
- 38:56Speaker 3: with an old school helmet and goggles. And it's like
- 38:58Speaker 3: nineteen sixty eight is when they begin to introduced full
- 39:00Speaker 3: face howits so is an absolute mad lad forgiving it.
- 39:04Speaker 2: You go, it's great. I love it. It's you.
- 39:06Speaker 3: I don't want to say in the race, but for
- 39:08Speaker 3: her fun it's somewhere like Goodwood. Yeah, I think that's fabulous.
- 39:12Speaker 3: So yeah, nineteen sixty eight to commemorate the year that
- 39:16Speaker 3: Bell began introducing full face hobits.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yeah, Yuki, he's now top of our leaderboard for what
- 39:23Speaker 2: it's worth.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Oh, I like margin, Yes, that's quite a lot. I
- 39:27Speaker 1: have to end on a minus though unfortunately for me anyway,
- 39:31Speaker 1: it's minus one point also to Christian Horner to zero
- 39:35Speaker 1: unfortunately for taking laps off Liam Lawson at the Silverston
- 39:39Speaker 1: filming day as practice for Goodwood. So Liam Hawson built
- 39:42Speaker 1: up to his two hundred kilometers or whatever it is
- 39:44Speaker 1: of the filming day and Christian Horder said, well, I
- 39:47Speaker 1: need to get a feel for the car.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Get out.
- 39:50Speaker 3: So it wasn't wrong current Goodwood, but I think it was.
- 39:56Speaker 1: I believe it was the same time. Be wrong, but
- 39:59Speaker 1: I believe it was the same car. It's Silverston.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Wow, that's fantastic. Let's look into that.
- 40:07Speaker 1: But yeah, even if it, even if it was an
- 40:09Speaker 1: old car, I still took tract I took some, took
- 40:11Speaker 1: some spotlight away from Liam.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Mine. So there you go, Christian Horner back on
- 40:15Speaker 2: par with Logan sergeant and all right, so my last
- 40:24Speaker 2: point it all centers on Goodwood.
- 40:25Speaker 3: It seems this week my last points awarding goes okay,
- 40:31Speaker 3: So a special appearance relates a little bit to an
- 40:34Speaker 3: Australian jack doing an alpine Mineu's twenty and twelve points
- 40:41Speaker 3: for passing off the lotus E twenty is.
- 40:43Speaker 2: An alpine that really grates me. That sort of stuff.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Yes, you're saying the rounds for a long time, isn't it.
- 40:52Speaker 2: In about seventeen different paint schemes.
- 40:55Speaker 3: But it's the car that Kippy Richen and drove to
- 40:57Speaker 3: Victory and Amy Derby in twenty twelve.
- 41:00Speaker 2: It is a Lotus E. Twenty. You you know, if
- 41:03Speaker 2: you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig.
- 41:06Speaker 2: You can't dress that thing up.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Yes, it's the same team, and then it came out
- 41:11Speaker 3: of the same factory, but you can't try and pass
- 41:14Speaker 3: that off as an Alpine car. It's the same that
- 41:17Speaker 3: goes back to Lotus trying, you know that Lotus. They
- 41:21Speaker 3: keep me writing the Lotus trying to simultaneously claim the
- 41:24Speaker 3: heritage of Betaton and therefore told them and Lotus, which
- 41:31Speaker 3: is the point that I grappled with back a decade
- 41:34Speaker 3: or so ago. So yeah, minus twenty twelve four Alpine
- 41:37Speaker 3: for trying to falsify history.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Surely they surely it's time they get an updated show cart. Like,
- 41:43Speaker 1: I understand budget constraints, but that's a long time ago. Now,
- 41:46Speaker 1: surely time.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Would it not cost them more to rewrap the car
- 41:50Speaker 3: and maintain it and just bring one of the you know,
- 41:52Speaker 3: give you a quick dust through some tires on it
- 41:54Speaker 3: out you go.
- 41:56Speaker 1: That's an interesting question. I don't know yes, it's certainly
- 41:58Speaker 1: done the rounds. Maybe they just like it, maybe it's
- 42:00Speaker 1: just you. It starts up easy, it doesn't give them
- 42:03Speaker 1: any problems to the mechanics. I don't know, but it's
- 42:05Speaker 1: sorely time that they bring an updated car.
- 42:08Speaker 2: But it's time to do with a hybrid battery and
- 42:10Speaker 2: all that sort of stuff.
- 42:10Speaker 1: But anyway, quite possibly, but I mean other teams are
- 42:13Speaker 1: doing it. Come on, lift. That's all the time we've
- 42:16Speaker 1: got for pit Talk this week anyway, though, but we'll
- 42:19Speaker 1: be back next week to wrap up all of the
- 42:21Speaker 1: action from the Hungarian Grand Prix. You can subscribe to
- 42:23Speaker 1: Pittalk wherever you get your favorite podcasts, and you can
- 42:26Speaker 1: leave us a radio interview as well. You can also
- 42:28Speaker 1: keep up to date with the latest F one news
- 42:29Speaker 1: throughout the round at Fox sports dot com dot Au
- 42:32Speaker 1: and speed Gape dot Com. From Matt caution me, Michael Lomonado,
- 42:35Speaker 1: thanks so much for your company and we'll catch you
- 42:37Speaker 1: next week.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Very good, beauty
