- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. Hi, my name is Katie Follett and
- 0:31today I'm going to dive a little deeper into the topic that I
- 0:37introduced during the last podcast, which was on
- 0:40resilience. And so if you haven't caught
- 0:43that, feel free to go back and listen.
- 0:45But this can also totally stand alone.
- 0:48Mindset skills, I believe are a really important part of
- 0:52resilience. And one of the mindset skills
- 0:56that's really near and dear to my heart is self talk.
- 1:00And how do you silence the voice of self doubt?
- 1:05If you're an athlete, you've probably experienced this where
- 1:10you get into a certain situation and then all of a sudden it
- 1:15feels like your confidence is gone.
- 1:17Or maybe you're believing or thinking something that isn't
- 1:21necessarily true, but it feels true in that moment and it's
- 1:23really hard to get unstuck from it.
- 1:25And if you're a coach, maybe you're supporting athletes who
- 1:28run into certain situations and they just can't seem to get
- 1:31their mind back on track. And so the self talk was a huge
- 1:36part of my journey because I got stuck in this a lot.
- 1:40I had to learn to see where I was caught in old faulty
- 1:43patterns and beliefs and create a more balanced view of reality
- 1:47moving forward. So I'll just start with the
- 1:50story because pretty much all of these turning points in the road
- 1:55for me came from personal failures that turned into
- 2:02springboards to success where I learned to solve a problem in a
- 2:05new way and got a new skill. And this one was one that led
- 2:10from me really lacking confidence in big situations
- 2:15where there was a lot of pressure or there was a lot on
- 2:16the line and not believing in myself to feeling really
- 2:20confident and prepared for those high pressure situations and
- 2:23actually being able to overcome some of myself doubt and
- 2:27actually go on to make a World Team.
- 2:29So I my story kind of began back in high school, in high school
- 2:37cross country, I went into my senior year with an undefeated
- 2:44cross country season and a lot of expectations and a lot of
- 2:47pressure on myself about how things needed to play out if I
- 2:51wanted to continue to run in college or ever continue to race
- 2:54again. And maybe you can relate to that
- 2:58if you're working with some seniors.
- 3:00So I went into this race and everything was going exactly as
- 3:05I had planned. I got into the last 400 meters
- 3:09of the race and I started to kick it into that next year.
- 3:13And then all of a sudden I started to feel like I was going
- 3:16to pass out and everything like there was I was seeing stars.
- 3:21And I went from being in the lead pack to finishing fourth
- 3:26from last way back in 159th. And I was scared and confused
- 3:32and upset. And I got back to the tent and a
- 3:35coach made a comment, well, I guess that you're just not
- 3:39mentally tough and you can't perform under pressure.
- 3:42And so in that moment, I started to agree with that.
- 3:46And I started to think, well, gosh, there's no other
- 3:49explanation. Maybe I am an athlete that's
- 3:51just not mentally tough and cracks under pressure, but I
- 3:54actually don't think mentally tough exists.
- 3:57I think mentally prepared does. And I just didn't have the tools
- 4:01that I needed in that moment to solve the problem in front of
- 4:04me. And the immediate problem was
- 4:05that I was actually anemic. And so Fast forward a few years
- 4:09and I found out that I had low ferritin levels.
- 4:12And basically the dumbed down version of that, if you don't
- 4:15know what I'm talking about, is that it affects how your red
- 4:19blood cells can carry oxygen. And so I needed to take an iron
- 4:22supplement. And so once I started taking an
- 4:24iron supplement, even though I didn't pass out anymore, I still
- 4:29had this voice of self doubt that would come up from time to
- 4:31time. And it would turn into a self
- 4:35fulfilling prophecy where I would get into the last 200
- 4:39meters of a big race and I'd think, Oh no, this is where it
- 4:42all falls apart for me. I'm an athlete that cracks under
- 4:44pressure. And then my body would follow my
- 4:47mind. So I think there's a big overlap
- 4:49there. And so these are I'm just going
- 4:52to really briefly go into three quick steps that an awesome
- 4:57coach and mentor, Dan Paff. If you listen to me talk about
- 5:01anything that has to do with mindset skills, his name will
- 5:04come up because I learned so much from him.
- 5:06But he walked me through some of these steps.
- 5:08And these were really where I started to dig in and practice
- 5:13and learn how to rewire my self talk.
- 5:16So my this will be my my Cliff notes version.
- 5:21So what is self talk? I think it's kind of like
- 5:25goggles. You need to be able to identify
- 5:29the problem and have awareness of where you might not be seeing
- 5:33things really in the way that aligns with reality most
- 5:38accurately. And I like to think of this, if
- 5:42anybody's ever skied or snowboarded, or maybe you just
- 5:44have sunglasses with different lenses.
- 5:47If you put them on and you wear them for long enough, when you
- 5:50take them off, the world looks a little distorted.
- 5:52The colors look a little bit different.
- 5:54And so you you're not, you're not seeing things exactly as
- 5:59they really are. And so that's a little bit like
- 6:01what self caught can do. And so you might find yourself
- 6:05making things really black and white or you might find yourself
- 6:09catastrophizing things or you might be disqualifying the
- 6:12positive. That's what I was doing in my
- 6:15story. I was saying, oh, hey, like I I
- 6:17don't compete while under pressure because I haven't been
- 6:21able to win a state title or win an NCAA title or make a World
- 6:26Team. So the first thing is like,
- 6:28which do you notice which lenses and distorted ways of thinking
- 6:33might you actually be putting on?
- 6:35And I'll include a free PDF with this that has some more.
- 6:38So if you want to reference that, you totally can.
- 6:41And then so then how do you take those goggles off?
- 6:44You can't just replace the negative thought with a +1.
- 6:47You need to actually address what you can't see.
- 6:50And so what's going on underneath the surface because
- 6:55what you see is like the behaviors or the actions or the
- 6:58consequences on top. But there's actually, you know,
- 7:02your beliefs and your values and your feelings, your attitudes,
- 7:06things that you're afraid of. All of these false evidence
- 7:09appearing real. I love that acronym for fear.
- 7:12That's all what's going on underneath.
- 7:14And so you want to be able to notice with compassion and
- 7:21curiosity, what are you saying to yourself in the heat of the
- 7:25moment? This is a clue as to what you're
- 7:27believing. And then what happens when this
- 7:32occurs? How's that working out for you?
- 7:34That's the consequence of those beliefs.
- 7:37That's what you're probably seeing that you don't like.
- 7:40And so a way to kind of dig in is to try to understand, OK,
- 7:44what situations when I get into them, trigger this belief or
- 7:47this negative self talk or this negative thought.
- 7:50And that kind of helps you understand where it comes from
- 7:53'cause that's why you can't just replace a negative thought with
- 7:56a +1. You actually have to get in
- 7:58there and understand well, why do I believe this, 'cause
- 8:01there's probably something that happened, which is a reason why
- 8:03you're believing that. And so you need to be able to
- 8:06challenge that. You need to be able to ask, is
- 8:09this always true? And you could probably think of
- 8:13some instances when that wasn't true.
- 8:14And you could probably think of some instances when that was
- 8:16true. So what are the specific factors
- 8:19that contributed to the outcome when it was true?
- 8:22And what can you do to try differently next time and beef
- 8:27up your storyline of the times when that wasn't true?
- 8:29Remind yourself, hey, this isn't always true.
- 8:31For me, I needed to remind myself, no, I have performed
- 8:35well under pressure and I can perform well under pressure.
- 8:38And these are times when I've done it.
- 8:40And there's some really specific things that I've done since
- 8:44those races that caused this belief, like taking an iron
- 8:47supplement and what this very skill that we're doing right
- 8:51now, digging into self talk and then getting hope like for a
- 8:58different outcome because you're focusing on what you can try
- 9:01differently next time. This is what helps us remove the
- 9:04Thinking trap goggles. And then how do we get the
- 9:11negative self talk or our self doubt to go away and stay away?
- 9:15Prepare, prepare, prepare. I think prepared equals
- 9:19competent. So I like to think of this as
- 9:23the boogeyman. So this is this came from coach
- 9:26Dan Paff and he said, all right, that boogeyman's going to be
- 9:29standing there for you with 200 meters to go.
- 9:32And it's going to be giving you all, all, you know, all of
- 9:35yourself doubt and like, hey, this is when it falls apart.
- 9:38This is where you go perform. So what are you going to say to
- 9:41silence it? So the benefit of going through
- 9:44some of those questions to see what's going on underneath is
- 9:47that it can really help you come up with something that's a
- 9:50mantra that you can use in the moment to combat that, right?
- 9:56You can use it in the heat of the moment.
- 9:59So this isn't always true. I've done XYZ to prepare for a
- 10:02different outcome and refocusing on what's in your control.
- 10:06So for me, I'm a Christian and Bible verses always worked
- 10:09really, really well as mantras for me.
- 10:11So mine was, hey, like this isn't always true.
- 10:14I have performed well under pressure.
- 10:16I've done it before, I can do it again and I can do all things
- 10:19through Christ who strengthens me and I can give 100% Today's
- 10:23data point. Those those were some of my my
- 10:26mantras. And so yeah, I would just think
- 10:30that that would be my homework for self talk.
- 10:33Gonna go back through some of those questions, pause, write
- 10:35them down and then reinforce them.
- 10:42Reinforce your mantra general. One small win each day.
- 10:46Continue to write down examples of when this wasn't true,
- 10:49evidence to the contrary of that negative belief.
- 10:52Bring in some of your support, talk about it with coach or
- 10:55teammate. Think about the things that
- 10:57you're grateful for and make a list of things that you're doing
- 11:01differently to work towards a different outcome.
- 11:05So that is my Cliff Nuts version on self talk.
- 11:11If you would like to go through some of these exercises more in
- 11:16depth or in person with me, I'm in the process of creating a
- 11:21course and I also meet one-on-one with athletes and
- 11:25coaches to walk through these exercises.
- 11:28So reach out, grab a hold of my free resource that is going to
- 11:33be included and also hold of me by e-mail or follow me on
- 11:38Instagram. I'd love to hear from you.
- 11:40This is something that I'm so passionate about and I love
- 11:44doing, so I really would love to hear from you.
- 11:48So thank you to Gil Athletics Coaching Network for just
- 11:53allowing me this opportunity to speak on something that I'm so
- 11:58passionate about. And I hope that there's
- 12:00something that was helpful in here for you.
- 12:04And my final encouragement is just practice these things when
- 12:07you get into the end of a workout, practice, practice,
- 12:11practice. That's the closest that you get
- 12:14to how it feels at the end of a race.
- 12:15You want to feel confident. You want to feel prepared.
- 12:17Use your mantras. If it doesn't work, just try
- 12:22again differently next time. So if I can do it, you can do
- 12:27it. I believe in you.
- 12:31Thank you very much. Have a great day.
