- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst. Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff.
- 0:20Speaker 3: He's Paul Pabst. You might sense some tension on the
- 0:23Speaker 3: set today. There is a big matchup tonight, of course,
- 0:27Speaker 3: Eagles at Bears. I'm a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan. Paul
- 0:30Speaker 3: is a lifelong Bears fan. So we're usually good friends.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Not today, my friend.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Yeah, we're pulling the Band-Aid on this one.
- 0:35Speaker 5: We got a lot of Week 3 to get to,
- 0:37Speaker 5: a lot of college football to get to. But it's
- 0:38Speaker 5: a saucy matchup tonight because we're going to break it down.
- 0:41Speaker 5: Third-string quarterback versus first-string quarterback who the home fans don't
- 0:45Speaker 5: always back. That's a recipe for a mess.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 3: This is going to be a weird, weird game because, obviously,
- 0:50Speaker 3: Case Keenum is likely to start. Case Keenum is actually
- 0:52Speaker 3: a very good friend of mine. I have very conflicted feelings. And,
- 0:55Speaker 3: of course, we have a lot going on in baseball
- 0:57Speaker 3: with the Phillies and the Cubs and the White Sox.
- 0:59Speaker 3: There's so much to go to that let's not make
- 1:02Speaker 3: this personal, though. Let's talk about the actual games, not ourselves.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Well, keep it friendly, as we always do here.
- 1:06Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Let's start out with the Ravens-Cowboys. I've got to be honest, Paul.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I had no idea who was going to win this
- 1:12Speaker 3: game until it was actually over. insane ending. Ravens win 34-31.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Seven seconds left, drive down, kick the game-winning field goal.
- 1:20Speaker 2: What stood out to you?
- 1:20Speaker 5: Well, this is a great play. I mean, seven seconds left.
- 1:23Speaker 5: You have a timeout left, and J.J. Watt's calling the game.
- 1:26Speaker 5: He's like, You either have to throw to the sidelines,
- 1:28Speaker 5: but because you have a timeout left, the middle of
- 1:30Speaker 5: the field's in play. And it's like the Cowboys' defense
- 1:32Speaker 5: didn't realize the middle of the field was in play
- 1:35Speaker 5: and that you don't need that many yards to set
- 1:36Speaker 5: up this kind of kick.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I think the Cowboys actually blew this game in their
- 1:40Speaker 2: last possession.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Totally.
- 1:41Speaker 2: They had the ball. They were first and two after
- 1:44Speaker 2: a really bad defensive pass interference call.
- 1:47Speaker 3: They're first and goal, and they get a false start.
- 1:49Speaker 3: This is so Cowboys. They are right at the finish line,
- 1:53Speaker 3: and they find a way to blow it.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And to me.
- 1:55Speaker 3: By the way, Paul, this has been going on the
- 1:56Speaker 3: whole Jerry Jones era. It's not just this game. They
- 1:59Speaker 3: find ways to lose.
- 2:00Speaker 5: There was this picture on Twitter where someone says, the
- 2:02Speaker 5: Cowboys found a way to lose this game, and it's
- 2:04Speaker 5: first and goal, 21 seconds to go. You really put
- 2:07Speaker 5: losing in play, and that's one of those games. I
- 2:09Speaker 5: can remember the Cowboys last year. They had a game
- 2:11Speaker 5: maybe a year before where they tied the Packers. And
- 2:15Speaker 5: right now, that loss doesn't look so bad. Oh, you
- 2:17Speaker 5: lost to the Ravens.
- 2:17Speaker 4: Not so bad. But if you miss the playoffs by
- 2:19Speaker 4: half a game, you're going to remember this one.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the Ravens are a tough opponent. It
- 2:23Speaker 2: was a wild game in Brazil. It looked really fun. J.J.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Watt was amazing. It was a great game. But, you know,
- 2:29Speaker 3: it's an inter-conference game, Paul. So I don't know if
- 2:31Speaker 3: it really makes a difference in the playoff race. This
- 2:33Speaker 3: is a good team to lose to.
- 2:34Speaker 2: But the fact that they were so close.
- 2:35Speaker 5: I think it's bad for momentum because they did a
- 2:37Speaker 5: pretty good job on Derrick Henry.
- 2:39Speaker 4: They held him to three yards a carry. and 25
- 2:41Speaker 4: of those are on one carry. And so the defense
- 2:43Speaker 4: stepped up.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Last year, remember Jerry Jones talked about how we need
- 2:47Speaker 5: to stop the run.
- 2:48Speaker 4: They did. Not stopped, but they controlled Derrick Henry. They
- 2:51Speaker 4: didn't control Lamar.
- 2:52Speaker 5: But it felt like they were improving, and this would
- 2:54Speaker 5: have been one of those wins where it was defense first.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Well, you're right, because the Giants ran all over them
- 2:58Speaker 3: in week one. I don't think it's a huge deal.
- 3:00Speaker 3: You did see Dak Prescott has elevated his game. I'm
- 3:03Speaker 3: going to say top five quarterback in the NFL right now.
- 3:05Speaker 3: He makes every throw.
- 3:06Speaker 2: He looks unbelievable. And with that wide receiver duo, and
- 3:09Speaker 2: they ran the ball on Sunday, I think they're going
- 3:11Speaker 2: to be fine. But to me, when they get to
- 3:14Speaker 2: the playoffs, they're going to find a way to lose
- 3:15Speaker 2: it again.
- 3:16Speaker 5: See, I think this is the kind of game where
- 3:18Speaker 5: you don't make the playoffs, where the rest of the
- 3:20Speaker 5: NFC chews each other up. The NFC West, I should say,
- 3:23Speaker 5: the NFC East, And this is one of those games
- 3:25Speaker 5: that you remember six weeks from now going, that's the
- 3:27Speaker 5: one we had.
- 3:28Speaker 4: We were going to steal a win that should have
- 3:29Speaker 4: been a loss.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yeah. What about the turf coming in? Were you expecting
- 3:33Speaker 2: something major to happen?
- 3:34Speaker 5: So I'm watching beforehand. Again, they're showing pictures of the turf.
- 3:36Speaker 5: And they had this big machine that was like stitching
- 3:39Speaker 5: the turf together and putting turf.
- 3:41Speaker 4: It looked like Brian Urlacher. Remember he went from bald
- 3:43Speaker 4: to having hair?
- 3:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 5: The field went from ball to having grass on it,
- 3:46Speaker 5: and it wasn't that big of a story.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Yeah, there were a couple plays. Zay Flowers, the excellent
- 3:50Speaker 3: Ravens receiver, made a couple cuts. I'm like, ooh, that's
- 3:52Speaker 3: going to be bad. Lamar made some cuts, but they
- 3:54Speaker 3: all came out okay. That, to me, there was a
- 3:56Speaker 3: couple injuries. That, to me, was the game of the
- 3:58Speaker 3: year so far.
- 3:58Speaker 5: What was really funny is people were saying, this is
- 4:00Speaker 5: going to be a disaster, and this is really going
- 4:02Speaker 5: to pump the brakes on international games.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Not so fast, my friend.
- 4:06Speaker 5: They're going international more and more, and they'll do whatever
- 4:09Speaker 5: they can to partially fix that field just for the game.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I think the rating is going to be, at peak,
- 4:14Speaker 3: $ 40 million or something. It's going to be like an
- 4:16Speaker 3: NFC title game. Any Cowboys 4 o'clock game rates high,
- 4:21Speaker 3: people probably tuned in because it was so close. So, yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 3: if you don't like international play, I think this is
- 4:26Speaker 3: their excuse to add double the amount.
- 4:28Speaker 2: They're going over there.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Where are we going next? Last night's game?
- 4:31Speaker 3: By the way, then last night's game is almost a repeat.
- 4:34Speaker 3: The Broncos beat the Rams 30-26.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Another game, you had no idea who was going to
- 4:39Speaker 2: win this game until the very, very end.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Yeah, this is one of those games, if you watch
- 4:43Speaker 5: the last few plays, it felt like the Rams defensive
- 4:45Speaker 5: back did not commit P.I. and had a great interception,
- 4:49Speaker 5: walk off, close it out. You have a little scare
- 4:51Speaker 5: in the second half from Bo Nix, but that was
- 4:53Speaker 5: one of those games where you should have pulled this off.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I mean, if you watch this play, this looks like
- 4:57Speaker 5: normal battling, a little floater. And that is an awesome interception.
- 5:02Speaker 5: That's one of those where the receiver is selling it
- 5:04Speaker 5: and the ref falls for it.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I know everybody's saying this. I mean, he clearly
- 5:08Speaker 3: grabbed him and held him. I would have called it
- 5:10Speaker 3: a holding.
- 5:10Speaker 5: The other ref's in a way better position to make
- 5:12Speaker 5: the call.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Are you sure that he did grab his waist and
- 5:16Speaker 3: turn him a little bit before the ball was in
- 5:18Speaker 3: the air?
- 5:18Speaker 4: I wouldn't say it was manhandled. I think it was
- 5:20Speaker 4: lightly manhandled.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I know.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Terry McCauley went off on that call, the NBC officiating expert.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Either way, how important is this loss for the Rams?
- 5:28Speaker 3: You know, they were supposed to be this dream team.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Now they're 1-2. Has it turned into a nightmare team, Paul?
- 5:33Speaker 2: No, look at you.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Scare headlines for a lot of classic. I would say
- 5:37Speaker 5: this is one of those. Again, when the Rams are
- 5:39Speaker 5: on the road in the playoffs and not playing at home,
- 5:41Speaker 5: it's games like this because of that. We're going to
- 5:44Speaker 5: talk later about the 49ers. And if you look at
- 5:46Speaker 5: what happened to Seattle, everyone's kind of close enough where
- 5:49Speaker 5: it's not that big of a deal. You get Miles
- 5:50Speaker 5: Garrett back. You get Puka back full speed in October.
- 5:53Speaker 5: This could be a memory.
- 5:54Speaker 2: That's a great point.
- 5:55Speaker 3: But they do have the Eagles coming up and they
- 5:57Speaker 3: have the Bills after that. There's a chance that it
- 6:00Speaker 3: gets late early for the L.A.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Rams.
- 6:02Speaker 3: It's no guarantee because last night they looked good. I
- 6:04Speaker 3: thought they thought they had the game won at halftime
- 6:07Speaker 3: and that sort of gave up on the game. So
- 6:09Speaker 3: they can't play like that. They did in the second half,
- 6:11Speaker 3: lost some urgency.
- 6:12Speaker 5: And if you look at this Rams schedule here, that
- 6:14Speaker 5: game against the Cardinals and that game against the Raiders,
- 6:16Speaker 5: we penciled it as easy W's a month ago.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, the Cardinals, I think. And now the
- 6:22Speaker 3: Chargers game is the W. I mean, Cardinals, Chargers, Commanders, Cardinals.
- 6:28Speaker 3: When I look at that, but then you got the
- 6:30Speaker 3: Chiefs later in the season. The Niners look outstanding. The
- 6:33Speaker 3: Rams can't mess around. They messed around on Sunday night.
- 6:35Speaker 3: That's what really bothered me. If they had just sort
- 6:38Speaker 3: of kept the foot on the gas, they easily should
- 6:40Speaker 3: have beat Denver.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I don't know how Bo Nix does this, by the way.
- 6:43Speaker 3: If we had a text chain earlier that night complaining
- 6:45Speaker 3: about the Broncos not putting up a fight and how
- 6:47Speaker 3: bad Bo Nix looked, and then he always does this.
- 6:49Speaker 5: See, it does remind me of Caleb Williams last year,
- 6:52Speaker 5: where all these games, they're losing the first half, they're
- 6:54Speaker 5: losing the second half. Bo Nix is a great fourth-quarter quarterback.
- 6:57Speaker 5: He's not a great one, two, and third-quarter quarterback. And
- 7:00Speaker 5: this is a little bit like Caleb.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Williams last year.
- 7:03Speaker 5: Bo Nix is clutch but not great, and sometimes that's enough.
- 7:07Speaker 5: I'd rather have a guy who's clutch than a guy
- 7:09Speaker 5: who can't get it done.
- 7:10Speaker 4: By the way, that's not a touchdown.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Wasn't this that 8-9 fourth quarter games went to Bo
- 7:14Speaker 3: Nix last year? It is a mysterious team to me,
- 7:17Speaker 3: and they had some issues on defense.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Early on, it looked like the Broncos were non-threatening.
- 7:22Speaker 3: You know, my Super Bowl matchup, Paul, is Denver against L.A.,
- 7:26Speaker 3: and I wanted a mulligan big time after week one.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Now I think I'm back in. I'm back in on
- 7:31Speaker 2: Broncos versus the Rams.
- 7:32Speaker 5: I'm with you because I think the Broncos up their talent.
- 7:34Speaker 5: Once Jalen Waddell gets going and gets enough targets like
- 7:37Speaker 5: he didn't get week one, I think they're going to
- 7:39Speaker 5: be fine.
- 7:40Speaker 4: This is one of those things.
- 7:40Speaker 5: If your problem is your quarterback is great at fourth
- 7:43Speaker 5: quarter comebacks, that's not a problem.
- 7:44Speaker 2: If you gave me a mulligan, which team do you
- 7:46Speaker 2: think I should pull out of that?
- 7:47Speaker 3: If I get one different team, the Rams 1 and 2,
- 7:51Speaker 3: I actually feel okay.
- 7:52Speaker 2: With them as my Super Bowl team.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you should because talent usually plays out.
- 7:55Speaker 5: I will say that the Niners are throwing a wrench.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Into all of this.
- 7:57Speaker 3: They're a problem. They're a major problem in my Super
- 7:59Speaker 3: Bowl pick. I actually thought if I could create a
- 8:01Speaker 3: time machine, I might go back and pick the Niners.
- 8:03Speaker 5: If you could, let me know because I want to
- 8:05Speaker 5: go back and go to a couple of Bears games.
- 8:06Speaker 5: All right, let's get to college football. This was a
- 8:08Speaker 5: really huge weekend on paper, college football, and it really
- 8:10Speaker 5: turned out to be a great weekend all over the
- 8:12Speaker 5: place in college football. Florida rolls the Ole Miss, Iowa
- 8:15Speaker 5: over Michigan, Texas over Tennessee, but the USC-Oregon game was
- 8:19Speaker 5: the fallout game of the weekend. Oregon's playing well. USC
- 8:22Speaker 5: was 4-0, but a very shaky 4-0. Early in the game,
- 8:26Speaker 5: Dante Moore of Oregon gets knocked out. He got actually
- 8:29Speaker 5: knocked out of the game. Dylan Riella comes in. You
- 8:31Speaker 5: remember him from his college football tour he's been making
- 8:33Speaker 5: the past few years, and they actually played fantastic. Oregon
- 8:37Speaker 5: beat USC with a backup quarterback, and Raiola did everything.
- 8:41Speaker 5: If you watch this play here, this is the Dante
- 8:43Speaker 5: Moore slide and hit. This is as bad as it gets. Now,
- 8:47Speaker 5: we could talk more about this later, but this is,
- 8:49Speaker 5: if you want to say, watching in slow motion, that
- 8:52Speaker 5: he slid a little late, maybe, but that doesn't excuse
- 8:56Speaker 5: the other half of it.
- 8:57Speaker 4: It doesn't.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, there was a lot of targeting
- 9:00Speaker 3: this weekend. There were a lot of Helmuth-Delma hits. Leading
- 9:02Speaker 3: with the elbow like that is totally unacceptable. I think personally,
- 9:06Speaker 3: His post-injury reaction is what doomed the USC player.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Yeah, Desmond Stevens, the USC linebacker.
- 9:12Speaker 3: He was caught on camera celebrating on the sideline. You
- 9:15Speaker 3: don't celebrate when somebody's in serious trouble.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Yeah, even if the hits happen, clearly he didn't hold up.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Right, it's football. It's absolutely vicious hits like that happen
- 9:23Speaker 2: all the time. Right.
- 9:24Speaker 5: The sideline guys, the position coaches on USC have to
- 9:27Speaker 5: save him from his health. They've got to sit him
- 9:29Speaker 5: down and say, hey, calm down, stop high-fiving.
- 9:32Speaker 4: You're making this worse. And USC, as everyone knows, had
- 9:35Speaker 4: to suspend him the day before.
- 9:36Speaker 5: But bigger picture is fallout of the weekend, Lincoln Riley
- 9:40Speaker 5: and USC, if there was a honeymoon, it's well over.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Well, it's funny to me.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Lincoln Riley seemingly left Oklahoma because he didn't want to
- 9:48Speaker 3: follow Oklahoma to the SEC.
- 9:50Speaker 2: And then he goes to USC. And then what's USC do?
- 9:52Speaker 3: Go to the Big Ten, which is particularly not suited
- 9:54Speaker 3: for Lincoln Riley. He needs to be in the Big
- 9:57Speaker 3: 12 ball where there's not such a thing as two
- 9:59Speaker 3: sides of the ball.
- 10:00Speaker 2: There is just no toughness to a Lincoln Riley USC team.
- 10:03Speaker 4: And they've got talent. They've got a lot of young talent.
- 10:04Speaker 5: They do have a quarterback, but it just doesn't feel
- 10:06Speaker 5: like they're threatening week to week. USC's next few games, Washington,
- 10:10Speaker 5: Penn State, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Indiana, then UCLA to finish
- 10:16Speaker 5: the season. I mean, they should be favored in most
- 10:19Speaker 5: of them. I'm not sure today. I don't think today
- 10:22Speaker 5: they're going to be favored in all of those. Is
- 10:24Speaker 5: that a team, USC, that fires their coach not midseason
- 10:26Speaker 5: but end of season?
- 10:27Speaker 2: So I saw different numbers on the buyout, between 70
- 10:29Speaker 2: and 80 million.
- 10:30Speaker 4: For Lincoln Riley.
- 10:30Speaker 3: For Lincoln Riley. So I don't think they want to
- 10:33Speaker 3: pay that money for the buyout. I think a lot
- 10:35Speaker 3: of people are going to be turned off by that money.
- 10:36Speaker 3: But it's even a bigger picture. Lincoln Riley brought in
- 10:39Speaker 3: a lot of young studs, especially their defensive end, Luke Waffle.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I think USC is not dumb. If you fire Lincoln Riley,
- 10:46Speaker 2: they're gone.
- 10:47Speaker 5: So your concern is if you let the players go
- 10:49Speaker 5: by getting rid of your coach.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 3: I think generally, because it's USC and the way that
- 10:55Speaker 3: they work, I do not think Lincoln Riley is going
- 10:58Speaker 3: to get fired.
- 10:58Speaker 2: What's your take? Do you think he's gone?
- 11:00Speaker 5: I think you're in a position where it's going to
- 11:01Speaker 5: be like where the wag the dog. The boosters are
- 11:04Speaker 5: going to say, we want this guy gone. And they'll
- 11:05Speaker 5: say USC is going to say, you've got to pay
- 11:07Speaker 5: for it. Yeah, we'll fire whoever you want, but you
- 11:10Speaker 5: guys got to pick up the buyout like they do
- 11:11Speaker 5: at Texas A & M, like they do at Clemson,
- 11:13Speaker 5: like they do at Florida State.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I see what you're saying, but this is overall just
- 11:18Speaker 3: a very bad situation. By the way, I got something
- 11:20Speaker 3: in my ear, but I got a major NFL trade.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Really? Major. Do you want it now or do you
- 11:24Speaker 2: want it after the break? I got to give it
- 11:27Speaker 2: to you.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Let's do it now.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I got to give it to you.
- 11:29Speaker 4: A major NFL. Can you give me a hint?
- 11:31Speaker 2: Quarterback. You're going to guess it. I'll let you guess.
- 11:33Speaker 2: It's a quarterback trade.
- 11:35Speaker 5: Mac Jones has been traded to the New York Giants.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Right team, wrong player. J.J. McCarthy is reunited with a Harbaugh. J.J.
- 11:43Speaker 3: McCarthy goes from Minnesota to the New York Giants. Of course,
- 11:45Speaker 3: played for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. Now he goes with
- 11:48Speaker 3: John Harbaugh. Not a shock. Jameis Winston was awesome in
- 11:52Speaker 3: the interview, but did not play well.
- 11:53Speaker 5: I'm going to need a 20 to react to this
- 11:55Speaker 5: in the moment. I think this is great for the Vikings.
- 11:57Speaker 5: This is a problem that's out of the building. They
- 11:59Speaker 5: don't have to coach him. They don't have to deal
- 12:01Speaker 5: with him.
- 12:01Speaker 2: It's over.
- 12:02Speaker 5: They're going to take a lot of heat for the
- 12:03Speaker 5: direction of their franchise, but the problem is no longer
- 12:06Speaker 5: in the building. I think this is terrible for the
- 12:08Speaker 5: New York Giants.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Why?
- 12:09Speaker 4: Because you're not competing for anything this year.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Nope.
- 12:11Speaker 5: This guy doesn't help you compete this year, and now
- 12:14Speaker 5: you've inserted a quarterback controversy into next year's Giants team.
- 12:18Speaker 2: You're actually giving a lot of credit to J.J. McCarthy.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Are you sure he's good enough to create a quarterback
- 12:22Speaker 2: controversy or win any games this year?
- 12:24Speaker 5: Well, why get rid of a fifth-round pick for someone
- 12:26Speaker 5: who you don't believe can push Jackson Dart? Now, you
- 12:28Speaker 5: have Jackson Dart hurt. And he has to come back
- 12:30Speaker 5: and deal with this, another young gunslinger.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Well, I've got to be honest.
- 12:33Speaker 3: If they had done Jameis for the next 14 weeks,
- 12:35Speaker 3: that would be a major, major problem.
- 12:37Speaker 2: They could start losing bad.
- 12:38Speaker 4: But you like the lose-bad Giants.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I don't think J.J. McCarthy is going to win you
- 12:43Speaker 3: that many games. He's a developmental quarterback. So why not
- 12:46Speaker 3: bring another developmental arm into the building?
- 12:48Speaker 2: Hey, you know what? It's a lottery ticket. What if
- 12:51Speaker 2: he's good?
- 12:51Speaker 4: Breaking news on Snapchat.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, I love breaking news. I love to be
- 12:54Speaker 2: the one. You were close. By the way, Mac Jones,
- 12:56Speaker 2: if they had gotten Mac Jones, that would be bad.
- 12:59Speaker 3: But I was thinking that touchdown, I'm sorry, the interception
- 13:01Speaker 3: Cam Ward threw at the end of the Titans-Giants game,
- 13:03Speaker 3: that was four draft slots in one play. Basically, Jeremiah
- 13:07Speaker 3: Smith just got sent to Tennessee and not the New
- 13:10Speaker 3: York Giants.
- 13:10Speaker 2: We are cooking. All right, coming up next, we got
- 13:13Speaker 2: our warm takes.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I have a great Marvel movie analogy that Paul will
- 13:17Speaker 3: not understand, but you might.
- 13:19Speaker 5: That's Not So Fast, Pabst and Perloff. All right, Iowa City,
- 13:24Speaker 5: this is for you. Paps and Perloff, not so fast.
- 13:27Speaker 5: This is the midday pick-me-up.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Final seconds, Iowa versus Michigan. Hank Brown, laser back shoulder.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Reese Vandersee for the win. You've got to review it, sure,
- 13:39Speaker 5: but that is a beautiful catch. Reese Vandersee, back shoulder
- 13:42Speaker 5: play from Hank Brown for the win on the road
- 13:45Speaker 5: for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Gorgeous.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Gotta be honest, I was shocked Iowa got down the
- 13:50Speaker 3: field in that scenario.
- 13:51Speaker 2: What does Iowa have a minute-long drive like that?
- 13:54Speaker 5: Well, it was fascinating for a couple reasons. Look at
- 13:55Speaker 5: this picture.
- 13:56Speaker 4: If I lived anywhere near Iowa City, I would wallpaper
- 13:59Speaker 4: my dining room in this picture. This is fantastic.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Really wild game, and Michigan gave it up at the end.
- 14:05Speaker 5: One thing that happened with Michigan, they made a play
- 14:07Speaker 5: late on that drive where they pushed someone out of bounds.
- 14:09Speaker 4: They got a 15-yard penalty. and made it instead of
- 14:12Speaker 4: a chuck.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Oh, I know.
- 14:13Speaker 4: You saw it.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, sloppy play, late hits all over college football.
- 14:19Speaker 2: It's really driving me crazy.
- 14:20Speaker 4: No excuses.
- 14:20Speaker 5: It's time for some warm takes, and let's stay with it.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Warm takes here on Not So Fast. I will go first, Pearl.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 14:26Speaker 5: I said this last Friday on warm takes that there
- 14:29Speaker 5: was three teams that needed to win this weekend for
- 14:31Speaker 5: multiple reasons, but to stay in the relevancy picture, maybe
- 14:34Speaker 5: not playoff picture. Iowa was one of them. Mississippi State
- 14:37Speaker 5: was one of them, and so was Florida. Iowa took
- 14:39Speaker 5: care of Michigan, and their reward? They get college game
- 14:42Speaker 5: day to come to their campus for the first time
- 14:44Speaker 5: in two decades.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Now, they're going to face Ohio State next weekend. How's
- 14:47Speaker 4: that going to work out?
- 14:48Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 14:48Speaker 5: But you still get college game day. Mississippi State, Demario Taylor,
- 14:52Speaker 5: their quarterback, he is on the Heisman boards. He's on
- 14:55Speaker 5: draft boards. He's on all the boards. They love Mississippi State.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Feel good story. Really in the picture for the SEC.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Great player. Really having a good time.
- 15:03Speaker 5: And then there's Florida. Florida and their new coach, John Summerall,
- 15:06Speaker 5: they absolutely took woodshed to Ole Miss. They opened up
- 15:10Speaker 5: a can. and took care of them. And their running
- 15:12Speaker 5: back is fantastic. Their quarterback is doing well. But bigger picture,
- 15:15Speaker 5: Florida feels like respectable, good, threatening, even better than that
- 15:19Speaker 5: football again. And that's what John Summerall has done in
- 15:22Speaker 5: less than a month. Now, Florida is the big picture
- 15:24Speaker 5: team here. Can they go on a run in the SEC?
- 15:27Speaker 5: It gets tougher, never gets easier. They got all the
- 15:29Speaker 5: big boys coming up, Georgia, Arkansas, all the heavyweights. But
- 15:32Speaker 5: Florida football is To do that on national TV against
- 15:35Speaker 5: Ole Miss, one of the darlings, was fantastic. Really good
- 15:38Speaker 5: weekend for those three teams.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I want to talk about college football, too,
- 15:41Speaker 2: in my warm day.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Well, let's continue this conversation because I actually have a major,
- 15:45Speaker 3: major issue with college football.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Are you poo-pooing something?
- 15:48Speaker 2: I'm poo-pooing the top 25. And I actually tweeted this
- 15:50Speaker 2: out on Saturday.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Watching all the games, there was so much bad football,
- 15:55Speaker 3: so much sloppy football. I don't think they have enough
- 15:58Speaker 3: teams to fill out the top 25. I don't think
- 16:00Speaker 3: there's 25 teams there.
- 16:01Speaker 2: There.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Start with the number one team, Texas. Why can't the
- 16:05Speaker 3: Texas Longhorns run the football? It's been two years now
- 16:10Speaker 3: where anytime they play a tough opponent, it is guaranteed
- 16:12Speaker 3: to be third and 10 for Arch Manning.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Everyone's ripping Arch Manning.
- 16:15Speaker 3: I don't even think they're watching the game because a
- 16:17Speaker 3: big problem with Texas with all these pros on their
- 16:19Speaker 3: offensive line is they cannot run the ball. And they're
- 16:21Speaker 3: the number one team. And also, they are sloppy, stupid
- 16:24Speaker 3: personal fouls. Colin Simmons, maybe the best player in all
- 16:27Speaker 3: of college football with an idiotic personal foul. You see
- 16:30Speaker 3: it throughout college football. These guys are getting paid like pros, Paul.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Why don't they act like it and not have stupid
- 16:36Speaker 3: celebrations and hits that are nine yards out of bounds?
- 16:38Speaker 4: Well, I think it's a good point.
- 16:39Speaker 5: The Colin Simmons celebration where he pretended to urinate after
- 16:42Speaker 5: sacking the quarterback. We should be talking about his five
- 16:44Speaker 5: sack game.
- 16:45Speaker 4: He was unbelievable. He looked great.
- 16:47Speaker 5: But I think it's this NIL era. Remember, the defensive
- 16:50Speaker 5: lineman might make more than his position coach, and I'm
- 16:52Speaker 5: not being facetious there.
- 16:53Speaker 4: He probably makes more.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he doesn't care.
- 16:54Speaker 4: What are you telling me? The South Carolina player the
- 16:56Speaker 4: other day, he.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Was yelling his name. Yeah, he's already in the pros, basically.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Yes, and so when you see these guys celebrate and
- 17:02Speaker 5: coaches trying to tell them not to, What type of
- 17:04Speaker 5: authority do you have when someone's making more than you?
- 17:06Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. So that gets back to my point about
- 17:08Speaker 2: the rankings, though.
- 17:09Speaker 3: The rankings make no sense because they're based on last
- 17:11Speaker 3: year's records, which are so irrelevant in college football because
- 17:14Speaker 3: of NIL and the transfer portal.
- 17:16Speaker 2: For example, you say Mississippi State beat Missouri. How do
- 17:18Speaker 2: we know Missouri is not a 4-8 team? Michigan. Iowa
- 17:22Speaker 2: beat Michigan in their game day. Guess what? Michigan stinks.
- 17:25Speaker 3: They run a high school offense, and they lost to
- 17:28Speaker 3: Western Michigan. They beat Oklahoma. Oklahoma is a 2-10 team.
- 17:32Speaker 3: These rankings are insane. They mean nothing. And the thing
- 17:36Speaker 3: about the committee is, the committee is so dumb. They're
- 17:38Speaker 3: going to look back and say, oh, wow, Iowa beat
- 17:41Speaker 3: a ranked Michigan team.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Guess what? That team doesn't belong to be ranked.
- 17:44Speaker 3: They are just an arbitrary number that the AP put
- 17:46Speaker 3: on these teams earlier on in the year.
- 17:48Speaker 2: And the committee better.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Be smart this year, Paul, because their rankings are based
- 17:52Speaker 3: on nothing, just like the helmet.
- 17:54Speaker 2: That means nothing. And this is going to continue throughout
- 17:57Speaker 2: the whole year. It's like, oh... Guess what?
- 17:58Speaker 3: We beat number 18 so-and-so.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Guess what?
- 18:01Speaker 3: That 18 so-and-so is probably a 500 team. Ole Miss
- 18:04Speaker 3: and LSU, the game of the year. How about the
- 18:06Speaker 3: average two teams of the year? I just think that
- 18:09Speaker 3: everybody gets all excited for these games.
- 18:10Speaker 2: But this year, I'm sorry. I'm eliminating it to the
- 18:13Speaker 2: top 11. Hold on. I got to work.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Cool off here.
- 18:15Speaker 2: No more AP Top 25.
- 18:16Speaker 3: It's just Top 11 and then a bunch of garbage.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Because people are doing dumb things out there and it's
- 18:21Speaker 3: driving me crazy.
- 18:22Speaker 5: You know, I'm with you because you went scorched earth
- 18:24Speaker 5: here but you have a lot of great points and
- 18:25Speaker 5: I think one of the points that you're making is
- 18:27Speaker 5: by setting up these rankings, you set up disappointment when
- 18:30Speaker 5: there's not real disappointment. They do this a lot of
- 18:32Speaker 5: it for TV. So you could say we have a
- 18:33Speaker 5: 12 versus 5 matchup. We have a 12 versus 17 matchup.
- 18:37Speaker 5: You want to sell it for TV, but these teams,
- 18:39Speaker 5: we know nothing about them. In this NIL era, we
- 18:41Speaker 5: know even less.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Combined with the fact that nobody plays anybody because they
- 18:44Speaker 3: know the committee is going to ding them if they
- 18:46Speaker 3: lose an out-of-conference game. So everyone says to me, Georgia,
- 18:49Speaker 3: what about Georgia? All the guys in the back were like, well,
- 18:51Speaker 3: Georgia's good. They've beaten Tennessee State, Western Kentucky, Arkansas, who's terrible,
- 18:56Speaker 3: and Oklahoma, who's even worse than Western Kentucky and Tennessee State.
- 18:59Speaker 2: So don't tell me about Georgia, Paul.
- 19:01Speaker 4: You're snapping.
- 19:02Speaker 5: The last time I saw you this mad was we
- 19:03Speaker 5: were on a road trip once, and the hotel restaurant
- 19:05Speaker 5: was closed when we got there, and you missed a meal.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Don't make pro-op men.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I lost the bats this weekend, Paul. I'm going to
- 19:09Speaker 2: be honest. That's part of it. There you go.
- 19:10Speaker 4: All right, here we go. Let's stay with a little
- 19:12Speaker 4: college football.
- 19:12Speaker 5: This is my warm take on the USC linebacker Desmond
- 19:15Speaker 5: Stevens and the Oregon quarterback Dante Moore. Clearly it was
- 19:17Speaker 5: a bad hit, terrible hit, cheap shot. Dante Moore, if
- 19:20Speaker 5: you want to say he slid late, Maybe, but either way,
- 19:24Speaker 5: we have a deal.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Here in professional sports and college sports.
- 19:27Speaker 5: The defensive players and the quarterback over the past 15
- 19:30Speaker 5: years have created this deal. And the deal is, I slide,
- 19:34Speaker 5: you try to avoid taking my head off.
- 19:36Speaker 4: We all win.
- 19:37Speaker 5: We all go back to the huddle. You don't get
- 19:39Speaker 5: suspended for a week. You don't lose a game check.
- 19:41Speaker 5: And the pros, and the pros these days, it seems
- 19:43Speaker 5: like they've learned. But the college kids, they're younger. They
- 19:47Speaker 5: want to make a statement. They want to be on
- 19:48Speaker 5: SportsCenter with a big hit. And this hit is going
- 19:50Speaker 5: to cost him a game. But it's like when you
- 19:52Speaker 5: merge on the highway, you go, I go. There's a
- 19:55Speaker 5: deal with defensive backs, linebackers, and quarterbacks.
- 19:58Speaker 4: I slide. You realize I'm sliding.
- 20:00Speaker 2: You hit the brakes.
- 20:01Speaker 5: We all kind of peel off from each other, and
- 20:03Speaker 5: we don't hit each other. This isn't the Kenny Pickett
- 20:05Speaker 5: era at Pitt where you could do the fake slide
- 20:07Speaker 5: and run. You can't do that. That's a penalty anymore.
- 20:09Speaker 5: There's a deal in place. Everyone should respect it. It's
- 20:12Speaker 5: kind of weird because I'm giving myself up. I'm trying
- 20:15Speaker 5: not to hit you. That's not what we grew up on.
- 20:17Speaker 5: But those days are gone. The days of Ronnie Lott
- 20:20Speaker 5: and those hits from the 80s and those VHS tapes,
- 20:22Speaker 5: best hits, they're gone. If you hit someone like this,
- 20:25Speaker 5: you're not going to be celebrated. And if you celebrate
- 20:27Speaker 5: on the sidelines, you're really not going to be celebrated.
- 20:29Speaker 5: So honor the deal, defensive backs, linebackers. You don't hit
- 20:32Speaker 5: the quarterbacks on the slide. And quarterbacks, if you do
- 20:35Speaker 5: slide and you slide late, Be ready, because there's one
- 20:38Speaker 5: guy on every team who may do this to you.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Yeah, well said.
- 20:41Speaker 3: You know, the thing about that game, actually, I'm not
- 20:44Speaker 3: sure that the better quarterback didn't come in for Oregon.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Everyone kept saying a backup came in. It's not a
- 20:49Speaker 3: normal backup. Dylan Rayola obviously could have gone anywhere and started.
- 20:52Speaker 3: He won the whole country.
- 20:53Speaker 2: I thought he was hurt.
- 20:54Speaker 3: I thought he was coming off an injury and wasn't
- 20:55Speaker 3: supposed to be himself. He looked better and more poised
- 20:58Speaker 3: than he had at any point of his career. So
- 21:00Speaker 3: it turned out to energize Oregon a little bit. And
- 21:02Speaker 3: I hope Dante Moore is okay, but Oregon's still a
- 21:05Speaker 3: very competitive team.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Great job by Ariel with the bench.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:09Speaker 3: I'll go to the NFL for my next warm take.
- 21:11Speaker 3: The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cincinnati Bengals. Now, Paul, I
- 21:14Speaker 3: know you don't follow this level of movies that much,
- 21:17Speaker 3: but Avengers Endgame is in the theaters right now.
- 21:19Speaker 2: It's sort of a warm-up act.
- 21:20Speaker 3: It's the old movie that happened about five years ago
- 21:23Speaker 3: for the new movie that's coming out in December with
- 21:25Speaker 3: Doctor Doom, Doomsday. You know all about it. The key
- 21:28Speaker 3: to Avengers is Thanos is inevitable. The bad guy will
- 21:31Speaker 3: always be a problem. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the Thanos
- 21:35Speaker 3: of the NFL. They will always be 10 and 7.
- 21:39Speaker 3: They are completely inevitable.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers, say what you want. Everyone buried him last
- 21:44Speaker 2: week because he looked terrible. Guess what? It was raining.
- 21:47Speaker 2: It's still basically.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Preseason for Pittsburgh because Pittsburgh did not really play Rodgers
- 21:51Speaker 3: in the preseason.
- 21:52Speaker 2: What does he do? He comes out Sunday and is awesome.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Once again, the Steelers beat a divisional opponent that we
- 21:58Speaker 3: expected them to lose to. They are veering very strong
- 22:02Speaker 3: for their fourth straight 10-7 season. You know it's coming, Paul.
- 22:07Speaker 3: You know that they're going to lose to some teams
- 22:09Speaker 3: that they should beat. You know that they're going to
- 22:10Speaker 3: beat some teams that they shouldn't. And they're going to
- 22:13Speaker 3: end up at 10-7, losing the wild card. Now, they've
- 22:15Speaker 3: lost in the wild card round five out of the
- 22:18Speaker 3: last six years. They didn't make it the sixth year.
- 22:20Speaker 3: They haven't won a playoff game since 2016. So I'm
- 22:23Speaker 3: not talking about them for the Super Bowl, but I
- 22:25Speaker 3: am talking about them being a average team.
- 22:28Speaker 2: It doesn't matter that Mike Tomlin's gone. They're still going
- 22:30Speaker 2: to be 10 and seven. Okay.
- 22:31Speaker 5: A couple of things there to recap, because I'm a
- 22:32Speaker 5: little dizzy, like my algebra one face in high school
- 22:35Speaker 5: where I'm like, I don't know what's going on.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Thanos.
- 22:37Speaker 5: I thought Thanos was that Elizabeth Holmes, uh, medical thing
- 22:40Speaker 5: that she created that big scam.
- 22:42Speaker 4: So now I know what Thanos is. Thanks for clarifying.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Uh, Bigger picture is you are buying into the Steelers short-term, long-term,
- 22:49Speaker 5: or medium-term.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I'm not buying in. I'm saying they were 10-7. It's fact.
- 22:53Speaker 2: They might as well just stop playing and come out
- 22:55Speaker 2: to the wild card and lose to the Bills. Yeah,
- 22:58Speaker 2: they're going to be 10-7.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Remember Mike Tomlin never had a losing season, and you
- 23:02Speaker 3: could never figure out why, and he was always around.
- 23:04Speaker 1: 500?
- 23:04Speaker 2: Before the 10-7 run, they were 9-8, 9-7-1, 12-4, 8-8, 9-6-1.
- 23:11Speaker 3: The Steelers just find a way to be just average,
- 23:14Speaker 3: not good enough to get a high draft pick for
- 23:16Speaker 3: a quarterback. They might get a Kenny Pickett once in
- 23:18Speaker 3: a while, but it doesn't work out. They're going to
- 23:20Speaker 3: be like this forever. I don't care if Aaron Rodgers
- 23:22Speaker 3: is quarterback. I don't care if it's Big Ben. I
- 23:24Speaker 3: don't care if it's Mason Rudolph. You have to admit,
- 23:26Speaker 3: there's just this thing about the Steelers. They always end
- 23:29Speaker 3: up in the same place. Did you expect them to
- 23:31Speaker 3: compete on Sunday?
- 23:32Speaker 4: No.
- 23:32Speaker 5: We talked about it on Friday. We thought there'd be
- 23:34Speaker 5: no moving by Rodgers, no blocking for Rodgers.
- 23:36Speaker 2: He moved incredibly well in the pocket. It was crazy.
- 23:39Speaker 3: He looked like he was 28 on some plays. And
- 23:41Speaker 3: one play, he scrambled out to the right. He was
- 23:42Speaker 3: outrunning guys. Where was that the week before?
- 23:44Speaker 4: Time machine.
- 23:45Speaker 5: All right, before we break, let's do a little not
- 23:47Speaker 5: so bad, not so good. We're chopping up all week three.
- 23:49Speaker 5: We're having a great time here on Not So Fast.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Not so bad. I got one. This is a team
- 23:53Speaker 4: that's not as bad as people think. I'm going to
- 23:55Speaker 4: go with the Commanders.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Marcus Mariota is a nice backup quarterback, maybe a high-ish
- 23:59Speaker 5: end backup quarterback, and they took down the Seahawks. Now,
- 24:03Speaker 5: I don't know how threatening they are, but if teams
- 24:05Speaker 5: like the Cowboys and the Eagles somehow give up games,
- 24:08Speaker 5: like if the Eagles somehow lost tonight and the Giants
- 24:11Speaker 5: are going nowhere... We could have a little resurgence. Jane
- 24:14Speaker 5: Daniels gets healthy. His elbow gets better. And Mario writes
- 24:18Speaker 5: the ship, not holds down the ship. He writes the ship,
- 24:20Speaker 5: gets a win or two, and hands off and they
- 24:22Speaker 5: go on a run.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Possible?
- 24:24Speaker 3: In my mind, that would be the biggest shock of
- 24:26Speaker 3: the NFL season. I don't see the Commanders winning more
- 24:29Speaker 3: than five games. And I don't even see the scenario where... Still,
- 24:32Speaker 3: you didn't convince me.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Why?
- 24:33Speaker 1: How?
- 24:34Speaker 2: First of all, the Seahawks... They did it versus the Seahawks.
- 24:36Speaker 2: The Seahawks.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Sam Darnold was coming back. The Seahawks won in no
- 24:40Speaker 3: part with that one.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Sam Darnold, he wasn't gone for like five years. He
- 24:42Speaker 5: wasn't Colin Kaepernick.
- 24:43Speaker 3: He was just a little rusty. They outgamed them by
- 24:45Speaker 3: about a million yards. That was a fluke, fluke win.
- 24:49Speaker 3: And honestly, I actually think more about draft position because
- 24:51Speaker 3: we'll see... The bigger issue for Washington, not even this season,
- 24:54Speaker 3: do they commit to Jaden Daniels?
- 24:56Speaker 4: Quickly, not so good, the Houston Texans.
- 24:58Speaker 5: I know they've started slow before and found a way
- 25:01Speaker 5: to rally for the playoffs, but this doesn't look right.
- 25:03Speaker 5: The defense looks mild. The offense looks non-threatening again. They
- 25:08Speaker 5: don't run the ball.
- 25:09Speaker 2: C.J.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Stroud hasn't had a big, great game, it seems like,
- 25:13Speaker 4: in two years.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Well, it's shocking to me. Stroud's not the main problem, though.
- 25:16Speaker 3: I think the defense should be more scary.
- 25:19Speaker 4: They should be pitching shutouts. I mean, Daniel Jones is
- 25:21Speaker 4: not that threatening.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Absolutely. It's strange to me that they're 0-3.
- 25:25Speaker 3: They had a tough first two games, obviously the Bills
- 25:28Speaker 3: and Josh Allen, but the Colts, the Colts without Alec Pierce,
- 25:32Speaker 3: I feel like this is a must-win game and they
- 25:34Speaker 3: did not show up.
- 25:35Speaker 4: All right, stick around.
- 25:35Speaker 5: We're chopping up a lot more Week 3 on Not
- 25:37Speaker 5: So Fast. We'll get you ready for the baseball playoffs
- 25:39Speaker 5: on NBC tomorrow, more college football, and the Clip Joint.
- 25:42Speaker 4: Stick around. All that coming up. Not So Fast. Pass
- 25:44Speaker 4: the pro off.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Welcome back to Not So Fast, Perloff and Papps. If
- 25:49Speaker 3: you hadn't heard, major trade in the NFL. Because of
- 25:52Speaker 3: this injury to Jackson Dart, the Giants have traded for J.J.
- 25:55Speaker 3: McCarthy for a fifth-round pick to Minnesota. I know Dart's
- 26:01Speaker 3: out for the season. To me, Paul, this doesn't say
- 26:03Speaker 3: that Dart is not the quarterback of their future.
- 26:06Speaker 2: It says we're going to take a flyer on J.J.
- 26:07Speaker 2: McCarthy for this season.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Okay, sell this to me, because if I'm a Giants fan,
- 26:11Speaker 5: I say... We're giving up a fifth-round draft pitch, which
- 26:14Speaker 5: is not nothing, but not a lot for a quarterback
- 26:17Speaker 5: in case they work out.
- 26:18Speaker 4: But sell this to me as the future of our team.
- 26:20Speaker 5: I thought it was all Jackson Dart when he got back,
- 26:22Speaker 5: and now it's like you're sending a message, we don't
- 26:24Speaker 5: trust Jackson Dart's recovery.
- 26:26Speaker 3: That's a good point. If you don't trust him physically,
- 26:29Speaker 3: maybe so. But a fifth-round pick doesn't say we don't
- 26:31Speaker 3: believe in our first-round pick.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Think about it.
- 26:33Speaker 3: If they had traded a fifth-round pick for a backup quarterback,
- 26:36Speaker 3: you wouldn't say that guy is going to challenge Jackson Dart.
- 26:38Speaker 5: Okay, so the best-case scenario here is J.J. McCarthy comes in,
- 26:42Speaker 5: plays above-average football. and leads you to a couple wins
- 26:46Speaker 5: and out of the draft picture? I guess I'm saying,
- 26:48Speaker 5: what is the goal here?
- 26:49Speaker 3: Well, maybe there's a scenario where J.J. McCarthy's elite, and
- 26:52Speaker 3: then Jackson Dart.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Wait, what?
- 26:55Speaker 4: I thought you were kidding.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Just because J.J.
- 26:57Speaker 3: McCarthy didn't do anything with Kevin O'Connell, probably the best
- 26:59Speaker 3: quarterback coach in the entire NFC.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Last year, J.J.
- 27:02Speaker 3: McCarthy, by the way, was not good. I'll pull out
- 27:05Speaker 3: a stat while we look at the Giants' schedule. 11 touchdowns,
- 27:08Speaker 3: 12 picks, 57% completion percentage. and some tough teams on
- 27:12Speaker 3: this schedule.
- 27:13Speaker 2: That's not good.
- 27:14Speaker 5: We've seen reclamation projects.
- 27:16Speaker 4: I want to go back to Sam Darnold. He didn't
- 27:18Speaker 4: work out with the Jets.
- 27:18Speaker 5: The Jets traded him to the Carolina Panthers. They got
- 27:21Speaker 5: a sixth round, a second round, and a fourth round
- 27:24Speaker 5: for Sam Darnold. That's pretty nice by the Jets. Clearly
- 27:27Speaker 5: what Minnesota is saying from their side of it is,
- 27:29Speaker 5: we want this guy gone.
- 27:31Speaker 4: We don't believe in him in any way.
- 27:33Speaker 5: We'd rather have Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz, and an open
- 27:37Speaker 5: future at the quarterback position.
- 27:39Speaker 2: I think they might have Max Brosmer on the practice squad.
- 27:42Speaker 4: First team all Brosmer.
- 27:42Speaker 3: No, I mean, actually, when they announced the quarterback move
- 27:45Speaker 3: in August, they did say J.J.
- 27:47Speaker 2: McCarthy could be traded for. They were just waiting for
- 27:50Speaker 2: an injury. I think they're happy to get a fifth-round pick.
- 27:51Speaker 5: Minnesota is weirdly in really good shape football-wise for the
- 27:55Speaker 5: NFC North, but really weird shape quarterback-wise.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Well, not so fast. Kyler Murray did not look good
- 28:01Speaker 2: on Sunday.
- 28:01Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying.
- 28:02Speaker 5: They have two questionable quarterbacks, but they're in really good
- 28:06Speaker 5: shape for maybe a playoff spot.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Probably, though. I mean, they've been outgained like crazy. There
- 28:11Speaker 3: is sort of a magic trick to be 3-0 for them.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Brian Flores, their defense coordinator, should take all the credit.
- 28:16Speaker 2: None of the quarterbacks. But obviously, J.J.
- 28:18Speaker 3: McCarthy wasn't going to contribute to that. This, to me,
- 28:20Speaker 3: is a Harbaugh thing. The Harbaugh is like to keep
- 28:23Speaker 3: it in family. Jim Harbaugh loved J.J.
- 28:25Speaker 2: McCarthy. J.J. McCarthy saved his job at Michigan.
- 28:28Speaker 4: So this is a brother favor.
- 28:29Speaker 3: It's not even a favor. I think that the Harbaugh's
- 28:32Speaker 3: think alike. And Jim Harbaugh gets so excited about his quarterbacks.
- 28:35Speaker 3: He's probably been talking about J.J. McCarthy at the Thanksgiving
- 28:38Speaker 3: dinner table for five years.
- 28:39Speaker 2: And John's like, well, you know what? Jim loves him.
- 28:42Speaker 2: And J.J. McCarthy, one thing about him, he can run.
- 28:44Speaker 2: He can move a lot.
- 28:45Speaker 5: Well, I still like him as a quarterback prospect because
- 28:47Speaker 5: I thought at Michigan he reminded you of kind of
- 28:49Speaker 5: a poor man's Aaron Rodgers. Enough movement, big arm. All right,
- 28:52Speaker 5: let's riff the games. Let's riff the games week three.
- 28:54Speaker 5: Let's stay in the NFL pro. We did a little
- 28:56Speaker 5: college football minutes ago.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Here we go. You don't know what's coming here. How
- 28:59Speaker 4: real are the Raiders going forward?
- 29:02Speaker 2: Ooh, this 3-0 is a mirage. There's no doubt about it.
- 29:05Speaker 3: The schedule's been relatively easy. No, I didn't even make
- 29:08Speaker 3: that connection. Or the mirage to the casino. No, I
- 29:12Speaker 3: think the Raiders are good, not great. I think they
- 29:15Speaker 3: have a great chance to get a wild card. When
- 29:17Speaker 3: I say that, I mean, they could be a wild card,
- 29:19Speaker 3: but do not think for one second this is an
- 29:21Speaker 3: AFC contender.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Yeah, you look at.
- 29:23Speaker 5: That Kansas City Chiefs game. You do have Brock Bowers back.
- 29:25Speaker 5: That feels great.
- 29:26Speaker 2: He was awesome.
- 29:27Speaker 5: You've got to feel like you could pick off a
- 29:28Speaker 5: win against New England, pick off a win against the Jets,
- 29:31Speaker 5: and it might put you in where you're 4-3 going
- 29:34Speaker 5: into that point of the season, and so you keep Cousins.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely keep Cousins. Unfortunately, you've got the NFC West here.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Whoever has the AFC North, the Steelers and those teams,
- 29:45Speaker 3: they have the NFC South, so that's just, they're going
- 29:48Speaker 3: to gobble up wins against that awful conference, so the Raiders'
- 29:50Speaker 3: schedule might make it tough for them in the wildcard competition.
- 29:53Speaker 5: You are harsh and snarky today. I made my call
- 29:55Speaker 5: a couple weeks ago. I thought that Mendoza would start
- 29:57Speaker 5: against the Jets. I'm going to say he starts... The
- 30:00Speaker 5: second to last week of the season.
- 30:01Speaker 2: How about the Jets in week three of next year?
- 30:04Speaker 2: All right.
- 30:05Speaker 5: Should we be talking about the San Francisco 49ers more
- 30:07Speaker 5: than we already are?
- 30:08Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh. They look so good, Paul. Brock Purdy
- 30:12Speaker 2: looks like an MVP candidate.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Nine touchdowns.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Yeah, Christian McCaffrey is doing his thing. It's all about
- 30:17Speaker 3: the old guys. George Kittle looks great. Debo Samuel looks great.
- 30:20Speaker 3: And they were impressive the other day.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Listen, they let the Cardinals throw some yards yesterday.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Those are meaningless points. I am thrilled with the Niners.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Bosa comes back in maybe four to five weeks.
- 30:31Speaker 5: You said something earlier in the show about two weeks ago.
- 30:33Speaker 5: You said, The Niners are accustomed to having injured stars,
- 30:36Speaker 5: so the Bosa injury is not that big of a deal.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Well, he's sort of their MVP. I think long-term, if
- 30:42Speaker 2: you want to compete for a Super Bowl, then you
- 30:44Speaker 2: need Nick Bosa. To me, this season is.
- 30:46Speaker 3: About Kyle Shanahan. We've been thinking about him. He has
- 30:48Speaker 3: to win a Super Bowl to get over the hump legacy-wise.
- 30:51Speaker 3: And I didn't think it was going to happen this
- 30:52Speaker 3: year because they're so old and injury-prone.
- 30:54Speaker 2: But guess what? I'm back on the Kyle Shanahan Super
- 30:56Speaker 2: Bowl watch.
- 30:57Speaker 4: If he wins the division, is he coach of the year?
- 31:00Speaker 2: Coach of the Year.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Over the Rams?
- 31:01Speaker 3: No, because he's not. Because there's a formula for Coach
- 31:04Speaker 3: of the Year.
- 31:04Speaker 2: It's like a Heisman. Right.
- 31:05Speaker 5: You have to be coaching a team that's not expected
- 31:08Speaker 5: to make the playoffs, and you somehow scare up a
- 31:10Speaker 5: playoff spot.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Right. So he had 12 wins last year, I believe.
- 31:13Speaker 2: So you can't go from 12 wins to 14 wins.
- 31:15Speaker 2: But who cares about that? He might win a ring
- 31:17Speaker 2: because these old guys are playing amazing. All right.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Two more Riff in the Games questions.
- 31:21Speaker 5: Will we, and I mean me, or the media or
- 31:24Speaker 5: the fans, embrace the Browns and their quarterback if they
- 31:27Speaker 5: continue to win?
- 31:28Speaker 2: No.
- 31:28Speaker 3: The national media, in my opinion, will never embrace Deshaun Watson.
- 31:32Speaker 3: The local media very much will.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Begrudgingly? Begrudgingly, but winning football games means so much.
- 31:39Speaker 3: There was a clip after the game where Deshaun Watson
- 31:40Speaker 3: ran into the tunnel and GM Andrew Barry gave him
- 31:43Speaker 3: a hug. And a lot of people in Cleveland thought
- 31:45Speaker 3: on social media, this is a feel-good moment. And let's
- 31:48Speaker 3: face it, the Browns are hungry for a winner. What
- 31:50Speaker 3: would you do if you were in Cleveland?
- 31:52Speaker 5: It's one of those where you have to root for laundry.
- 31:54Speaker 5: You can't say, I'm going to go out and get
- 31:55Speaker 5: a Deshaun Watson jersey. You're not going to do that.
- 31:57Speaker 5: I don't know what you tell your kids that the
- 31:59Speaker 5: quarterback you're clapping for if they Google his history, but
- 32:01Speaker 5: you have no choice.
- 32:03Speaker 4: Teams have been there.
- 32:03Speaker 5: They have guys on the roster who are not beloved
- 32:05Speaker 5: by fans, but nobody thought Deshaun Watson would go on
- 32:08Speaker 5: a run. And when I say a run, he's throwing
- 32:10Speaker 5: like two touchdowns, no picks, and 200 yards a game.
- 32:13Speaker 5: But if you're desperate as a Browns fan, you just
- 32:14Speaker 5: want some clean quarterback play.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Well, the key for Deshaun Watson is his ability to
- 32:17Speaker 3: run with the football. And my question, Paul, is can
- 32:20Speaker 3: he run like he did yesterday and not get hurt?
- 32:22Speaker 2: Because injuries were the problem the last four years.
- 32:25Speaker 5: On the last drive of the game, he got hit
- 32:27Speaker 5: and had to come out for one play. He got
- 32:28Speaker 5: hit right in the face, and he does take some
- 32:30Speaker 5: unnecessary hits. All right, last one. And this is for tonight.
- 32:33Speaker 5: As we said, Bears fan, Eagles fan, one of that
- 32:36Speaker 5: football soldier field. If the Eagles lose tonight, dot, dot, dot,
- 32:40Speaker 5: finish that statement.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Oh, the local media will kill offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Oh, is he first to get the blame?
- 32:46Speaker 3: He's first to get the blame because last year the
- 32:48Speaker 3: Eagles did nothing against the Bears. If you remember on
- 32:50Speaker 3: Black Friday, the Bears destroyed them. But everyone is worried
- 32:53Speaker 3: about the offense right now because it's not moving a lot.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts has.
- 32:57Speaker 3: Made great fourth-quarter plays, but he's like Bo Nix and
- 32:59Speaker 3: Caleb Williams. The first three quarters have not been great.
- 33:02Speaker 2: I think it's all about the offense.
- 33:03Speaker 4: All right, that's us riffing the games.
- 33:05Speaker 5: Week three, send in your thoughts, and we'll get to
- 33:06Speaker 5: those a little bit in constructive criticism. But coming up next,
- 33:09Speaker 5: it's time for the Cliff Join. David Pollock, Herm Edwards,
- 33:15Speaker 5: and much, much more from the DP Show.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 33:17Speaker 4: Not so fast. Pabst and Prowl.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Was there a guy that you did not want to
- 33:25Speaker 2: tackle when you played? Like you had to, but you
- 33:29Speaker 2: knew it was going to hurt? The guy in our
- 33:31Speaker 2: division then was running back, you'll remember him, John Riggins. Right? Yeah, Riggo.
- 33:36Speaker 2: You didn't want nothing to do with Riggins.
- 33:38Speaker 4: I mean, look, Earl Campbell. Walter Payton.
- 33:44Speaker 1: It was a running back league.
- 33:45Speaker 2: That's true. When I was in the league, it was
- 33:48Speaker 2: a runner's league.
- 33:49Speaker 4: It was like, oh, boy, you got to play these guys.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Now it's a passing league, obviously, but it was a
- 33:55Speaker 1: different set of circumstances in the years that I played.
- 33:59Speaker 5: Back on the clip joint, not so fast, Pabst and Perloff.
- 34:02Speaker 5: That was Herm Edwards, always a great guest on the
- 34:04Speaker 5: Dan Patrick Show. When he starts chopping up running backs,
- 34:07Speaker 5: where does your mind go for?
- 34:08Speaker 4: We're children of the 80s.
- 34:09Speaker 5: The running backs who maybe people don't know about as
- 34:12Speaker 5: much now, but you're like.
- 34:13Speaker 4: I wish you could have saw them play.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 34:15Speaker 3: I mean, Earl Campbell is at the top of the list.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Eric Dickerson with the upright running style would just be
- 34:20Speaker 3: cooking down the field.
- 34:21Speaker 4: The rec spec goggles.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Yeah, 100 miles an hour.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Obviously, Bo Jackson, for anyone who didn't get to see
- 34:25Speaker 3: him actually play football, because I think he's more legend
- 34:28Speaker 3: and myth now, and people forget he was actually awesome.
- 34:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the one is going back to Earl Campbell,
- 34:33Speaker 5: like he said. If you didn't see live Earl Campbell's
- 34:36Speaker 5: first four years, they're really stunning. He was really uncoverable, untackleable,
- 34:42Speaker 5: and he did it on national TV. There was a
- 34:44Speaker 5: Monday night game that Al Michaels called, and he ran
- 34:46Speaker 5: 80 yards on a play.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Yeah, with the shoulder pads hanging out.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Watch those Earl Campbell. Eric Dickerson's another one.
- 34:52Speaker 5: When he started going and you saw that track speed upright,
- 34:55Speaker 5: you thought every record running back-wise was getting broken.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Which it kind of did.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Actually, I thought when I heard that clip, Modern day,
- 35:01Speaker 3: who's the guy you don't want to tackle? For me,
- 35:03Speaker 3: it was Adrian Peterson when he was at his peak.
- 35:06Speaker 3: I saw more guys make business decisions when he was
- 35:08Speaker 3: coming down the field, especially if it was cold out.
- 35:10Speaker 2: People were just like, yeah, you go, Adrian. I'm good.
- 35:12Speaker 5: But it doesn't feel like in this generation you can
- 35:14Speaker 5: have that guy who doesn't also catch passes.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Go back to Leonard Fournette out of LSU.
- 35:19Speaker 5: When he came out of college, people thought this is
- 35:20Speaker 5: going to be the power back of this generation.
- 35:23Speaker 4: But he was not a pass catcher. He was average
- 35:24Speaker 4: at it, so he didn't get enough runs.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Well, also Leonard Fournette didn't really truck people in the NFL.
- 35:29Speaker 2: He did at LSU. I'm going to tell you, some
- 35:32Speaker 2: guys are muscular.
- 35:33Speaker 3: For example, the great Georgia running back, Herschel Walker, got
- 35:38Speaker 3: to the NFL. He was easy to tackle for some reason.
- 35:40Speaker 3: You know what I'm talking about? He had giant shoulder pads,
- 35:43Speaker 3: but you could bring him down. For me, a guy
- 35:45Speaker 3: like Fournette is so strong and muscular, but a guy
- 35:48Speaker 3: like Derrick Henry, now that's.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Who I don't want to see.
- 35:50Speaker 5: Yeah, Henry also does the, he'll baptize you with the
- 35:52Speaker 5: stiff arm. All right, sticking in with going back to
- 35:54Speaker 5: college football now, David Pollock was on the show with
- 35:57Speaker 5: Dan Patrick, and he talked about Arch Manning and kind
- 36:00Speaker 5: of talked about how he's processing, how he's doing things,
- 36:02Speaker 5: and had this recommendation or thought about Arch's future.
- 36:06Speaker 1: I think Arch Manning has exceptional talent. I think his
- 36:10Speaker 1: release is good. His arm is good. He has all
- 36:13Speaker 1: of the intangibles as well. He has the inside, the heart,
- 36:17Speaker 1: the character, everything that goes with it.
- 36:18Speaker 2: He has the size.
- 36:20Speaker 1: He has everything you need, except Arch Manning's processing is
- 36:25Speaker 1: just a step slow. It's consistently a step slow. Reps
- 36:29Speaker 1: definitely help. The more reps you get help. Now listen,
- 36:32Speaker 1: Sarkeesian's offense isn't really an offense that you're going to
- 36:34Speaker 1: sit there and go through progressions consistently and do that.
- 36:37Speaker 2: So I'm not.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Saying he'll get that at Texas, but I think there's
- 36:40Speaker 1: a good chance Arch Manning's back in college football next year.
- 36:43Speaker 5: I think it's a real topic-ish. I don't see this
- 36:45Speaker 5: happening that he plays another year of college football, Arch.
- 36:47Speaker 5: I think it's dependent on how far Texas goes, not
- 36:50Speaker 5: how far he drops or goes in the draft.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Well, that's interesting. If they don't win a title, for example,
- 36:55Speaker 2: you think Arch might be lured to come back to
- 36:57Speaker 2: try and win it all?
- 36:57Speaker 5: Yeah, like a first-round playoff exit in the college football
- 37:00Speaker 5: playoffs for Texas, I could see Arch going, no, no, no,
- 37:02Speaker 5: not on my watch, because none of his father, his grandfather,
- 37:07Speaker 5: his uncles, they want to get this.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Well, Peyton State of Tennessee, famously. Yep.
- 37:12Speaker 3: Maybe to avoid the Jets. Eli stayed at Ole Miss.
- 37:14Speaker 3: I don't remember if Archie even had the choice of leaving.
- 37:17Speaker 3: But Manning's stay doesn't need the NFL money. That's of
- 37:20Speaker 3: no interest to him. He's already getting paid a ton
- 37:22Speaker 3: of NIL. And his dad, Cooper, we know has plenty
- 37:26Speaker 3: of investments.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Yes, he knows what he's doing.
- 37:27Speaker 3: So there are a lot of reasons to think. I
- 37:29Speaker 3: just think that so much could go wrong for staying
- 37:31Speaker 3: another year.
- 37:31Speaker 2: What's the point? I feel like there's more downside to it.
- 37:34Speaker 2: than upside. And we're even seeing it this year.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Texas seems to find ways to look bad.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I don't think there's anything in.
- 37:41Speaker 4: It for Orange. While winning.
- 37:42Speaker 2: While winning.
- 37:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:43Speaker 2: You know, and also, Arch is in a bad spot
- 37:45Speaker 2: a lot of time. I keep on saying this.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Texas won't, can't run the ball, won't run the ball.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Arch isn't a lot of third and nine, and no
- 37:52Speaker 3: one looks good in that. For example, on Saturday, he
- 37:54Speaker 3: only threw 19 passes, and everyone said Arch looked terrible.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Well, he wasn't even on the field that much. Right.
- 37:59Speaker 5: Well, because the reactions to Arch Manning are extreme either way.
- 38:02Speaker 5: There's no measured— he' s the hot take feeder.
- 38:06Speaker 4: And no one can say, you know, he had a
- 38:07Speaker 4: nice game. Nice game doesn't do it. No one gets
- 38:09Speaker 4: a click. So you said he had a nice but
- 38:11Speaker 4: non-threatening game. You've got to say it.
- 38:12Speaker 2: He was awful.
- 38:12Speaker 5: He's not worth it. Is that really a Manning? It's
- 38:14Speaker 5: always way over the top, one direction or another.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Absolutely. You nailed it. All right. Coming up. Oh, here
- 38:18Speaker 2: we go.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Dan Lanning, head coach of Oregon. Man, did he have
- 38:21Speaker 5: a good weekend. Took care of USC. Then afterwards in
- 38:24Speaker 5: the press conference, he decided to ease.
- 38:26Speaker 4: No, he didn't ease up on them. He stepped on
- 38:28Speaker 4: the gas. Here's Dan Lanning.
- 38:30Speaker 2: It's a disgusting play. You know, you don't want to
- 38:32Speaker 2: see it happen. It's disappointing that it happened.
- 38:36Speaker 4: You know, I'm praying that our player is healthy and
- 38:39Speaker 4: I'm praying that they're Their player can learn from that
- 38:41Speaker 4: situation because that's not a moment you want to be
- 38:43Speaker 4: a part of.
- 38:43Speaker 6: Three wins against these guys. I guess if you're interested
- 38:46Speaker 6: in winning football games and you're from this area, you
- 38:48Speaker 6: should go to Oregon.
- 38:50Speaker 2: If you want to go to a Chris Brown concert,
- 38:51Speaker 2: you should go here. That's a walk-off.
- 38:54Speaker 4: That's an assault.
- 38:56Speaker 2: I mean, this is old-school rivalry kind of thing. We
- 38:59Speaker 2: don't get a lot of this in college football.
- 39:01Speaker 5: Yeah, Oregon, that's SEC talk out in Oregon, but you'll
- 39:04Speaker 5: love it. Hey, step on the gas, make a moment.
- 39:06Speaker 5: He's trying to recruit every minute, and that's a recruiting
- 39:09Speaker 5: tool comment as much as it is jabbing comment.
- 39:11Speaker 3: I remember when Chip Kelly was at Oregon, he would
- 39:13Speaker 3: get all the LA kids to come up to Oregon,
- 39:15Speaker 3: which is funny because it rains every day there, basically.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Yeah, it rains money on his players, NIL-wise. That's what
- 39:21Speaker 4: I would tell him.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you obviously got Phil Knight and Nike up there.
- 39:24Speaker 3: This was so embarrassing for USC because they had every
- 39:26Speaker 3: chance to win a backup quarterback, and Oregon has not
- 39:30Speaker 3: been good so far this year.
- 39:31Speaker 2: They haven't been consistent. And this, to me, felt like
- 39:33Speaker 2: a real sea change for USC.
- 39:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's a great day for Oregon. A
- 39:36Speaker 5: lot of big games coming up because now you're in
- 39:38Speaker 5: the Big Ten.
- 39:38Speaker 4: There are no easy days off.
- 39:39Speaker 2: All right, let's turn to the NFL for our next clip.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Mike Vrabel had a bad Sunday, and it's been a
- 39:45Speaker 3: bad season so far.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Let's hear from him.
- 39:49Speaker 6: Well, my concern level is very high for this football team.
- 39:52Speaker 6: I just want to coach and improve. So I think
- 39:57Speaker 6: that's the biggest thing, is when you come off a
- 39:59Speaker 6: game like that, that you just want to get back
- 40:03Speaker 6: and work. There's nothing you can do about it, but
- 40:06Speaker 6: we have to take care of the football. We can't
- 40:10Speaker 6: force things. We can't do things in all three phases
- 40:14Speaker 6: that end up getting you beat. So certainly we have
- 40:19Speaker 6: to You know, fix a lot of things.
- 40:22Speaker 4: They were in the Super Bowl last year. Oh, yeah.
- 40:24Speaker 5: Drake May was number two for the MVP award, and
- 40:27Speaker 5: they were in the Super Bowl last year. It doesn't
- 40:28Speaker 5: feel like those things ever happened.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a stat on Drake May that says
- 40:31Speaker 2: it all.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Last year in 20 games before the Super Bowl, he
- 40:33Speaker 3: never threw more than two interceptions. He's thrown two interceptions
- 40:41Speaker 3: or more in three of the last four games.
- 40:42Speaker 2: He's broken.
- 40:43Speaker 3: I mean, there's no way around it, especially the red
- 40:45Speaker 3: zone interception that Travis Hunter got.
- 40:47Speaker 2: That was such a bad play.
- 40:48Speaker 4: But he's not benchable.
- 40:49Speaker 5: You know, like if you have a young quarterback who's
- 40:51Speaker 5: never gotten anywhere, you could bench him and say, like,
- 40:53Speaker 5: let's let him sit a week and think about it.
- 40:55Speaker 5: Remember Bryce Young two years ago? This is not a
- 40:57Speaker 5: guy who's benchable for performance.
- 40:59Speaker 2: No, but definitely it seems like his confidence is shaken.
- 41:02Speaker 3: And it also seems like last year's Super Bowl trip
- 41:04Speaker 3: was a bit of an anomaly. They happened to get
- 41:07Speaker 3: out of the AFC when Mahomes was down. Somehow Denver
- 41:10Speaker 3: beat Josh Allen. I think last year, Bo Nix was healthy.
- 41:13Speaker 3: Then New England was not going to be in the
- 41:14Speaker 3: Super Bowl. All right, back to college football. It's time
- 41:16Speaker 3: for the rando. This is one of our favorite pictures
- 41:18Speaker 3: of the weekend, photographs of the weekend. Check this Wisconsin
- 41:21Speaker 3: fan out. Very, very gutsy here.
- 41:23Speaker 4: Job by him.
- 41:24Speaker 5: There he is, right in the middle. You could find him.
- 41:26Speaker 5: It's a whiteout at Penn State. He got a ticket
- 41:28Speaker 5: in the student section. He said, yeah, I'm flying my colors.
- 41:31Speaker 5: They seem to be nice to him. Wisconsin people, Penn
- 41:33Speaker 5: State people are getting along, but that is a great photo.
- 41:35Speaker 2: That's amazing. I still want to go to a whiteout.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Does that guy look a little like Cameron from Ferris
- 41:40Speaker 2: Bueller's Day Off? I'm a little far away.
- 41:41Speaker 4: In the Howe jersey?
- 41:42Speaker 2: Yes. I feel like Cameron's in the middle of a
- 41:44Speaker 2: bunch of Penn State fans. Hey, you know what? You go,
- 41:48Speaker 2: Wisconsin fans. It's your day. You get the win.
- 41:50Speaker 5: You can wear whatever you want. Coming up next, constructive
- 41:52Speaker 5: criticism and the feel-good. This is one of the best
- 41:55Speaker 5: feel-goods of the year. You're going to check it out next.
- 41:57Speaker 4: It's baseball-related.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 41:59Speaker 4: Not so fast. Pass from Perlman.
- 42:01Speaker 3: The MLB postseason starts tomorrow on NBC and Peacock. First up,
- 42:05Speaker 3: my Phillies at the Braves. Then White Sox at Astros.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Then in primetime, Red Sox, Yankees, Padres host the Cubs.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Oh, it's all awesome.
- 42:13Speaker 3: The MLB wildcard presented by Abby begins tomorrow on NBC
- 42:17Speaker 3: and Peacock.
- 42:18Speaker 2: I'm out of my mind with these matchups. Paul, what
- 42:21Speaker 2: are you most looking forward to?
- 42:22Speaker 5: I'm looking forward to being completely tired the next four weeks.
- 42:25Speaker 5: We're going to be staying up Monday Night Football tonight.
- 42:27Speaker 5: You've got four games tomorrow. You have to watch baseball playoffs.
- 42:29Speaker 5: I would say for the baseball playoffs tomorrow, the White Sox.
- 42:32Speaker 5: The White Sox are kind of this feel-good story. Did
- 42:35Speaker 5: they get enough?
- 42:36Speaker 4: Like, was that enough?
- 42:37Speaker 5: Will they be satisfied making the playoffs, or will they
- 42:38Speaker 5: go on a run? Because sometimes these teams, glad to
- 42:41Speaker 5: be here, cute story, they don't go on a run.
- 42:43Speaker 4: And then for the Cubs, P.
- 42:45Speaker 5: Crowe Armstrong is going to win the MVP in the NL.
- 42:47Speaker 5: This is a national showcase for him. They do not
- 42:50Speaker 5: have a bullpen. It's on him and the bats.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Okay, obviously, if you're going to Chicago, I'm going to
- 42:54Speaker 3: go Phillies. Phillies won 87 in 2022, 87 games and
- 42:59Speaker 3: made it to the World Series.
- 43:00Speaker 2: This year they won 88. I like that formula. They've
- 43:03Speaker 2: looked awful. And you know how baseball is completely random.
- 43:06Speaker 3: Usually, most years, except for last year, there's a five
- 43:09Speaker 3: or six seed that makes the World Series. In fact,
- 43:11Speaker 3: every year since 2022, there has been one. I think
- 43:15Speaker 3: you've got to watch out for all these wildcard teams,
- 43:17Speaker 3: especially on the lower end, can make a run because
- 43:18Speaker 3: baseball is random.
- 43:19Speaker 5: And I love teams that get rid of their manager
- 43:21Speaker 5: and make the playoffs. Like, it's going so bad in June,
- 43:24Speaker 5: we've got to boot a guy, and then they somehow
- 43:25Speaker 5: sneak into the playoffs.
- 43:26Speaker 3: I've got to be honest, the other thing I'm looking
- 43:28Speaker 3: forward to is the Braves. Now, listen, I'm rooting against
- 43:30Speaker 3: the Braves, but Chris Sale is starting game one. He's 37,
- 43:33Speaker 3: had another Cy Young-like season. How do you not love
- 43:37Speaker 3: Chris Sale?
- 43:37Speaker 5: And I think some people have cooled on the Braves.
- 43:39Speaker 5: Two years ago, they were over 100 wins. Last year,
- 43:42Speaker 5: they cooled off. Everyone likes the Brewers or the Dodgers, obviously.
- 43:45Speaker 5: But the Braves feel like a team that two years
- 43:47Speaker 5: ago should have won it.
- 43:48Speaker 2: They're under the radar right now, but they're very, very dangerous.
- 43:51Speaker 5: Chris Sale, by the way, talk about a career recovery.
- 43:53Speaker 5: He's kind of in that, like, I think I did
- 43:55Speaker 5: this and you said no, you poo-pooed this. He's kind
- 43:57Speaker 5: of like Kurt Warner. Great start, messy in the middle,
- 44:00Speaker 5: great ending of the game.
- 44:01Speaker 2: I just love how the ball moves off his hand.
- 44:03Speaker 2: It's incredible to watch.
- 44:05Speaker 5: Okay, Bears-Eagles at the Bears, Monday Night Football. Case Keenum
- 44:09Speaker 5: likely starting for the Bears.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Your thoughts? Well, I'm buddies with Case Keenum. I keep
- 44:13Speaker 2: saying that.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Can you be objective?
- 44:14Speaker 3: I'm rooting for him to be good. Now, the Bears
- 44:16Speaker 3: have a formula. They're going to run the ball all
- 44:18Speaker 3: over the Eagles.
- 44:19Speaker 2: That's the point. They did it last year, just dominate
- 44:21Speaker 2: them on the ground.
- 44:22Speaker 3: So in that sense, the quarterback doesn't have to do
- 44:24Speaker 3: a lot, and that keeps the Eagles' run game.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Out of it.
- 44:27Speaker 3: I think this is a battle of possession, Paul.
- 44:29Speaker 2: If the Bears can get first downs on the ground,
- 44:31Speaker 2: they win the game.
- 44:32Speaker 5: I think this is a no-win game for the Eagles
- 44:34Speaker 5: because if they beat a third-string quarterback and a bad defense,
- 44:37Speaker 5: you get no credit. If you have a struggle, you'll
- 44:39Speaker 5: probably be critiqued for having a shaky win.
- 44:42Speaker 4: And if you lose, it's all claws out.
- 44:43Speaker 5: I think they're going to have trouble with Keenum because
- 44:46Speaker 5: he is beyond a veteran. The guy's 38 years old.
- 44:48Speaker 5: He's got more gray hair than us. But they have
- 44:50Speaker 5: no tape on the guy. He doesn't play a lot.
- 44:52Speaker 5: He hasn't started the game in three years.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but they know Case Keenum.
- 44:56Speaker 4: There's no curveballs in his game?
- 44:58Speaker 3: Vic Fangio is literally coordinated. I have four games against Case.
- 45:02Speaker 3: Case won all of them, by the way. They all
- 45:04Speaker 3: know each other. What is Case Keenum going to be like?
- 45:06Speaker 3: They know what a Case Keenum game looks like.
- 45:08Speaker 4: Final score is?
- 45:09Speaker 2: I think the Bears win this one 21-19.
- 45:12Speaker 3: The Eagles almost lost to the Titans, and you saw
- 45:13Speaker 3: how bad the Titans were this weekend. The Eagles' offense
- 45:16Speaker 3: has yet to figure out its rhythm.
- 45:18Speaker 5: I'll go 24-23 Bears. All right, it's time for a
- 45:20Speaker 5: little constructive criticism. Your feedback on the social media for
- 45:23Speaker 5: what we're doing.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Right and wrong. Sometimes more wrong. Here we go, Carl.
- 45:27Speaker 4: First one.
- 45:30Speaker 5: Hope you and Paul Pabst discussed the worst of the
- 45:32Speaker 5: weekends on sportsman conduct in the Texas-Tennessee game and USC-Oregon game.
- 45:36Speaker 5: Makes alumni fans want to stop watching college football. Yeah,
- 45:39Speaker 5: we talked about that a little earlier. You know, the
- 45:41Speaker 5: star player for Texas doing the urination thing.
- 45:45Speaker 4: It's just, be creative. Be entertaining. You want to dance?
- 45:49Speaker 2: Great.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Dancing's fine. Nobody gets upset about dancing.
- 45:52Speaker 5: When you do the things that are considered vulgar, it
- 45:54Speaker 5: becomes a lead over the fact that you had five
- 45:56Speaker 5: sacks in a game.
- 45:57Speaker 2: I mean, I don't want to be that old guy
- 45:58Speaker 2: saying I don't like that celebration. I'm worried about that.
- 46:00Speaker 3: But what made me laugh about the Colin Simmons thing
- 46:02Speaker 3: is he did the celebration so over the top that
- 46:05Speaker 3: afterwards he gets the flag.
- 46:06Speaker 2: He's like, what did I do? What did I do?
- 46:07Speaker 2: But it was a huge play because it went from
- 46:09Speaker 2: fourth to 29 to a first down. So that's what
- 46:11Speaker 2: was frustrating. Do it in a non-important situation.
- 46:14Speaker 5: And on the halftime show, the guy doing the halftime
- 46:16Speaker 5: show goes, well, he did simulation of urination on the field. Oh,
- 46:19Speaker 5: so thank you for telling me he didn't actually urinate
- 46:21Speaker 5: on the field, because that would have been a real thing.
- 46:22Speaker 2: He might have, the way he was playing.
- 46:24Speaker 3: By the way, that being said, if I can draft
- 46:26Speaker 3: Colin Simmons, I am drafting Colin Simmons.
- 46:27Speaker 2: I mean, he was dominant.
- 46:29Speaker 4: I'm so excited I had to pee myself. All right,
- 46:30Speaker 4: stick around. We've got one more constructive criticism. Here we go.
- 46:33Speaker 4: Here's a random one. Would your next.
- 46:35Speaker 5: Car purchase most likely have more technology or less tech
- 46:39Speaker 5: than what you currently drive? I drive a pickup truck
- 46:41Speaker 5: from 2013. It's like it's 2003. I don't have a
- 46:44Speaker 5: lot of tech, not a tech guy.
- 46:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and listen, whenever I drive past like an old
- 46:49Speaker 3: 4Runner or something, I'm like, oh, Paul would probably bid
- 46:51Speaker 3: on this. I want more tech. I don't know why
- 46:54Speaker 3: people complain about tech. I am a terrible parallel parker,
- 46:57Speaker 3: and now I'm a good parallel parker. Paul, I would
- 46:59Speaker 3: drive a driverless. Would you ever have a Tesla with
- 47:02Speaker 3: no driver?
- 47:02Speaker 4: Oh, the driverless cars?
- 47:04Speaker 2: Yeah. That's the most tech you can have. Not yet.
- 47:07Speaker 5: I would take a nap, because if you do this,
- 47:09Speaker 5: I'll be out like this, and I've got to pay
- 47:10Speaker 5: attention to what's going on.
- 47:11Speaker 3: Yeah, so basically everyone's going to be driving robot cars,
- 47:14Speaker 3: and you're going to be chugging along in your Ford
- 47:16Speaker 3: from 2013?
- 47:17Speaker 4: That's exactly what's been happening. All right, here we go.
- 47:20Speaker 4: This is the one. This is the one of the weekend.
- 47:22Speaker 5: It was a sure thing. The staff voted on the feel-good,
- 47:24Speaker 5: and it was unanimous. Justin Verlander, back in the Detroit
- 47:28Speaker 5: Tigers uniform, standing O.
- 47:30Speaker 4: They're going to pull him out of the game, and oh, no.
- 47:33Speaker 4: You send the daughter?
- 47:34Speaker 1: Oh.
- 47:37Speaker 5: That's a must-cry situation and can't control my crying situation.
- 47:42Speaker 3: I mean, it was already emotional in the last pitch,
- 47:44Speaker 3: but we're both girl dads, and my God, was that
- 47:47Speaker 3: a tough moment.
- 47:47Speaker 2: I think the whole team was tearing up a little bit.
- 47:49Speaker 4: He is going to spend a lot at Brandy Melville
- 47:51Speaker 4: this weekend because she pulled off the pitcher pull of
- 47:55Speaker 4: the decade.
- 47:56Speaker 3: I saw Justin Berlander on a home improvement show with
- 47:58Speaker 3: Kate Upton once, by the way, and he literally is
- 48:00Speaker 3: spending a lot of time in stores on the weekend.
- 48:03Speaker 3: I don't know what kind of input he has on
- 48:05Speaker 3: the house, but, man, that is a lovely way to
- 48:07Speaker 3: go out.
- 48:08Speaker 5: Let's say that was us on the mound. Would either
- 48:10Speaker 5: of us have been able to control the tears and said,
- 48:12Speaker 5: thank you, daughter?
- 48:13Speaker 2: Are you kidding me?
- 48:13Speaker 3: I cried when I saw that on social media.
- 48:15Speaker 2: You think I could have handled it in real life?
- 48:17Speaker 2: No way.
- 48:17Speaker 5: Absolutely not. Great day on Not So Fast, the J.J.
- 48:20Speaker 5: McCarthy trade. We're going to chop that up tomorrow. I
- 48:22Speaker 5: don't know what the Giants are thinking. And Monday Night
- 48:25Speaker 5: Football tonight. Tune into the Dan Patrick Show tomorrow, 9 a.m. Eastern,
- 48:28Speaker 5: NBC Sports, to recap that entire game and all about
- 48:31Speaker 5: the trade.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Stick around. A lot more to come.
- 48:34Speaker 2: And one of us will be gloating.
- 48:37Speaker 4: Case Keenum, it's on you, buddy.
- 48:39Speaker 2: Good luck.
