- 0:00Hey everyone, happy Wednesday. This is friendly.
- 0:04Welcome back to In the Stillness.
- 0:06Thanks for joining me on today's episode, y'all.
- 0:09We made it to hump day. We're midway through the week
- 0:12and I just want to ask, how is your energy, not just physically
- 0:17but spiritually? I think once we kind of start
- 0:22the week off and we get halfway through, it can be easy to kind
- 0:26of just coast. But if I'm being fully honest
- 0:30with y'all, I feel like lately I've had some moments where I've
- 0:34been in the Word, I'm studying it, I'm showing up, but it is
- 0:39started to feel a little repetitive.
- 0:42Like I know the truth, but the fire has felt more quiet.
- 0:49And I was bringing this to the Lord this morning, and as I was
- 0:54sitting with God in first John 4, which is what we'll continue
- 0:58in today, I felt a gentle but clear nudge from the Holy
- 1:02Spirit. Maybe the problem is not that
- 1:06I've heard it too many times, but that I'm not fully receiving
- 1:11what the Lord is speaking to me. So I just want to go through
- 1:16first John chapter 4, verses 19 to 21 with you guys today and
- 1:21just let it minister to your heart.
- 1:23Don't take it in passively, but actively listen and ask yourself
- 1:29what God wants you to hear and really press into it.
- 1:34It says our love for others is our grateful response to the
- 1:39love God first demonstrated to us.
- 1:42Anyone can say I love God, yet have hatred toward another
- 1:47believer. This makes him a phony because
- 1:50if you don't love a brother or sister whom you can see, how can
- 1:55you truly love God whom you can't see?
- 1:59For He has given us this command.
- 2:01Whoever loves God must also demonstrate love to others.
- 2:08So this hit me in a fresh way after I prayed for the Lord to
- 2:12give me new insight and fresh revelation.
- 2:17God's love is our source and the picture that he brought to mind
- 2:23was it's kind of like your phone.
- 2:26God's love is the outlet, it's what we plug into and in a
- 2:32different way, we are the phone. And you would not expect your
- 2:36phone to function at full capacity if it has not been
- 2:41charged. So why do we expect ourselves to
- 2:45love people so well without staying connected to the source
- 2:48that is filling us? You cannot optimize your ability
- 2:54to love others if you're not consistently plugging into the
- 2:58source. Otherwise you can start running
- 3:01on what we would view it on our phones as low power mode.
- 3:06When that happens, you start conserving your energy, you're
- 3:11holding back. You're giving what is easy
- 3:14instead of what's costly, what's sacrificial.
- 3:19So I just want to ask you guys, are you living plugged into the
- 3:23source or have you been relying on your own strength and
- 3:28possibly running on low power mode?
- 3:32I love how this translation puts it.
- 3:35Our love for others is our grateful response.
- 3:40So we do not just love because He once loved us.
- 3:45We love because God continues to love us.
- 3:49Even in our inconsistency, in our willful rebellion, our
- 3:54rejection of Him, even when we have drifted in our minds and in
- 3:58our hearts, God remains consistent and steady.
- 4:03Our love for others is not something that we have to come
- 4:07up with, something that we manufacture on our own.
- 4:11It's something that we get to imitate.
- 4:13We get to mirror Christ's love, and this is where it gets super
- 4:19direct and real. You can say that you love God,
- 4:24but if that is not showing up and how you treat others, then
- 4:28something is clearly off because real belief is proven through
- 4:34action, through where your time goes, where your energy is
- 4:39placed, your willingness to show up.
- 4:43So it can lead to this question. Ask yourself, who am I becoming?
- 4:50When scripture is talking about loving your brothers and
- 4:53sisters, it's not just your immediate earthly family.
- 4:58It is the body of Christ as a whole, the church, meaning
- 5:02believers in your life and also believers across the world.
- 5:08And I think it can be easy to think I'm too small to make an
- 5:12impact even globally. But y'all, this is where the
- 5:17power of prayer is so important. Prayer has no distance limit.
- 5:23God hears all of your prayers that you bring to Him.
- 5:27James reminds us that the prayer of a righteous person is
- 5:32powerful and it is effective. So even when you cannot
- 5:37physically be in a certain place with other believers, you can
- 5:42intercede. You can express your love to
- 5:45them through your prayers over them.
- 5:48And that is so important. Now I want to get really honest.
- 5:54Let's ask ourselves, how are we going out of our way to love
- 5:59people right now? And not just in what is expected
- 6:04of us, but in what is unexpected?
- 6:08Even deeper, ask yourself, what kind of friend or sister or
- 6:14brother in Christ am I? Do you show up only when it is
- 6:19convenient for your schedule, or are you willing to step in when
- 6:24it is inconvenient, when it's costly?
- 6:27Because real love. It oftentimes shows up most
- 6:31clearly when it's the hardest I've seen this personally in my
- 6:36own life. My very own sweet, sweet
- 6:40grandpa. He cared for my grandma through
- 6:43years of Alzheimer's disease. Even when she forgot who he was,
- 6:49when she did not recognize his face, when it was exhausting,
- 6:54gut wrenching, heartbreaking, he never left her side.
- 6:59He continued to show up. He continued to love her so
- 7:03deeply, and I've seen it in my own friends as well.
- 7:07Walking through counseling, through therapy, addressing
- 7:11wounds and having the hard conversations that are not
- 7:16comfortable to have. Not because it's easy, but
- 7:20because they cared enough to fight for the relationship.
- 7:24That is the kind of love that perseveres and that stays.
- 7:29It chooses commitment over comfort.
- 7:33But even those examples, they pale in comparison to the
- 7:39fullness of what love really is, because the clearest depiction,
- 7:44the most complete picture of love is Jesus.
- 7:49It is in the details that we see the fullness of it in the Garden
- 7:55of Gethsemane, when He felt the weight of what was coming, the
- 7:59torture that he was about to endure on that cross, and He
- 8:03still said, yes, He said not my will, but the Father's will be
- 8:08done in me. So in the betrayal, in the
- 8:12suffering, in the humiliation, when he is being mocked and
- 8:16scorned by the very people that he was dying for, He was not
- 8:21just loving when it felt good. Jesus loved when it cost
- 8:25absolutely everything. He loved knowing that he would
- 8:30be rejected. He loved knowing that he would
- 8:35be tortured. He loved knowing that we would
- 8:38still fall short. Yet he stayed.
- 8:42That is not surface level love. That is covenant, sacrificial,
- 8:48all in love. And that is the love that we are
- 8:53now responding to. And I was reading in Revelation
- 8:583 last night, and I believe this warning in Revelation.
- 9:04It matters so much guys, because it comes up so much in this
- 9:09world today. Revelation 3 verses 15 to 16
- 9:12says this. I know all that you do, and I
- 9:17know that you are neither frozen in apathy nor fervent with
- 9:21passion. How I wish you were either one
- 9:25or the other, but because you are neither cold nor hot but
- 9:30lukewarm, I'm about to spit you from my mouth.
- 9:34That is so direct. And whenever I was reading last
- 9:39night, I was like, all right, I guess we're going to bed with
- 9:42this. But y'all, it is so significant
- 9:47because God is not calling us to 1/2 lived, low power mode,
- 9:52lukewarm lifestyle. He is calling us to be fully
- 9:57alive, burning with passion for his name.
- 10:03Second Timothy 16 says fan into flame, the gift of God.
- 10:08This is Paul's charge to Timothy when he is in his final years of
- 10:12his life. Meaning we are to stay
- 10:15connected, to keep receiving God's love.
- 10:19We have to tend to the fire to keep it alive.
- 10:24So I'm going to leave us with that and go ahead and closeout
- 10:27in prayer. Dear God, thank you that your
- 10:35love is steady. It is sacrificial.
- 10:40It is all in, and it is the source that we are to plug into
- 10:46to stay connected to. So I just pray with all of this
- 10:52that you would draw us back to you, God.
- 10:56Would you show us where we have been holding back, maybe where
- 11:01we have been limiting, receiving all that you have for us, all of
- 11:06the love that you're offering? Maybe where we have been running
- 11:09on empty, Would you rekindle our fire?
- 11:14God, reignite something real in us, a love that reflects you so
- 11:20brightly that it is so evident to everyone around us.
- 11:25Would you teach us to receive it deeply so that we can love you
- 11:29fully? I pray that we would be
- 11:33ambassadors of Christ that are on fire for you.
- 11:36Jesus. May we not just coast through
- 11:39this life with a lukewarm faith, but be red hot, burning with
- 11:45passion. I pray this in your name, Jesus,
- 11:50Amen. OK y'all well praying that this
- 11:53ministers to your heart that you just realize you do not need to
- 11:59try harder to love. It is not in your own strength
- 12:02and your own ability, but your charge is to stay plugged into
- 12:07the one who already loves you so fully.
- 12:11I will see y'all on the next podcast episode and just have a
- 12:15wonderful rest of your Wednesday.
