After 20 years of bringing joy and teaching resilience to visitors and staff alike, Maymont’s beloved black bear, Little Bear (aka Phoenix), has passed away after a lifetime of overcoming health challenges. Found as an orphaned cub in 2006, he lived with congenital dwarfism and hormonal issues, receiving dedicated care that kept him thriving — until recent years when arthritis and declining health made further treatment impossible.
