- 0:45SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonigal.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: Tristan, another interesting week in Texas Tech Sports.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I would say I'm feeling five stars today.
- 0:56SPEAKER_05: I'm feeling like number one in the nation kind of way right now.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: What do you feel?
- 1:00SPEAKER_05: How do you feel?
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: What do you guys what's your kind of vibe?
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: I also feel number one prospect in the 2021 class.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: Um, I guess we'll start it there.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: Let's start with canoes.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Okay, we were originally going to start with Zach Kidley, but let's just you open it up and let's go.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Spoilers.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Okay, we'll get to it.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: The people will know.
- 1:22SPEAKER_05: Our listeners don't have access to the internet, so they haven't heard any of this news yet.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: You the people come specifically to talk at tech pod because they haven't heard any of this before.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: They tier they tune their dial to the AM radio to find the right station, find the right frequency.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Our average listener is 85 years old.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Uh no, let's start with quit ooers because we we got some big news here.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Number one uh prospect of the 2021 class is considering playing at Texas Tech.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, it looks like it's between us, UT, and TCU right now.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: Um how what?
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: Uh I you know, we have this Dallas kid that's looking to come home after making a measly one million dollars at the age of 17 in the state of Ohio.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: And uh looking to uh come back to the Lone Star State.
- 2:16SPEAKER_05: And apparently, some school out in Lubbock is getting looked at at you know, to be potentially land the best quarterback seen out of high school in freaking who knows how long.
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: Is there anyone even comes close?
- 2:28SPEAKER_05: Is he literally the best?
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: He I think he's like one of the best recruits literally of all time.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, he would.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: I know uh we were looking at Twitter, and I think Austin Massey tweeted this, but he was like, This Quinn Owers would have been the number one prospect for Alabama and for like Clemson and for Oklahoma, like he would be the best recruit in all of those programs history, and he's considering going to uh Texas Tech University.
- 2:56SPEAKER_05: That's it's amazing news.
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's really cool to be considered immediately like that, being in the top running because it was originally us, UT, and AM.
- 3:05SPEAKER_05: You kind of expect those two schools to be in the running for a kid like this, just because you know, they obviously they gave they get a great amount of five and four stars at this point.
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: Um, UT, of course, always has.
- 3:15SPEAKER_05: And um, it's just really, really great to see us in that uh circle.
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: And it makes you wonder why.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm not saying obviously I love our university, and it's I'm not doubting the the ability to get a kid like that, but I'm saying, like, does this have to do with Joey Maguire?
- 3:31SPEAKER_05: Is this is this the excitement around the new hire out in West Texas?
- 3:35SPEAKER_05: Is that intriguing this kid?
- 3:37SPEAKER_05: Is it is us hiring a high school football legend that's beloved in the high school circles in the state?
- 3:43SPEAKER_05: Does that you think have a lot to do with this?
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, first off, you got to start with why he left Ohio State because clearly it's NIL related, in my opinion.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: I think he had a lot of money on the line and they were willing to pay him if he played a certain amount of games next year.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: And with Ohio State, they currently have CJ Stroud over there, who's going to play at Ohio State again next year.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: So, you know, he would have to beat out a starting quarterback who had a pretty great year.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: So I can see why he transferred.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, he clearly wants to come back to Texas because he's only looked at Texas schools.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Um, and I I mean, yeah, I think Joey McGuire with his connections that he has, obviously, Quinn Ewers is a South Lake Carroll guy.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm sure Joey knows his fair share in the high school atmosphere, especially in the DFW area, too, because he coached in that area uh over there at Cedar Hill.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I think he has something to do with it.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: I think Patrick Mahomes may have something to do with it.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: I think there's a lot of people over here in his corner right here, and even some pretty high-profile donors as well, are probably talking to Quinn and you know, considering giving him some some of that uh NIL money as well.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: But I think there's a lot that goes into this.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: I am just really happy to be considered right now, uh, to be honest, because we've never had a recruit this caliber, I mean, in like the top three, I don't think, before.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's amazing news just because it kind of makes you think about what the repercussions are.
- 5:16SPEAKER_05: Like, let's say we do get Gwen Ewers, not only are you getting the uh the best quarterback ever ranked out of high school in this system, but also you get potentially other recruits following him just to play with him, you know, just just to go with that insane five-star recruit.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, you know, wide receivers want to go uh play with that kid because you know they're gonna they want a good quarterback to throw to them.
- 5:39SPEAKER_05: So it just it really makes you think because it it just it starts a huge momentum because we're already building on some of it, and it's it's just crazy to think about that we're in consideration for this.
- 5:49SPEAKER_05: And and like you said before, and I was gonna bring it up.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: Um, uh Patch, whenever you have Patrick Mahomes come out of your school, the greatest quarter young quarterback in the NFL right now.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: I'm sure that helps you out a bit.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: He's like he's like the next he's like the he's been the next big thing for a while.
- 6:02SPEAKER_05: He's the he's as cool as sliced bread out there right now.
- 6:05SPEAKER_05: So it's it's it doesn't stink.
- 6:07SPEAKER_05: So it definitely helps our case.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I'm sure the idea of him being an actual program changer.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, honestly, you you look at we've had Patrick Bows before, we've had great prospects, Michael Crabtree, Graham Harrow, we've had great players come through Texas Tech, but for the state of our program now, to what this kid could do if he decides to come to Texas Tech, it would be in the wise words of Matt Wells, it would be tremendous.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: It really would.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, the the like you said, the the recruits that will come with Owers too, because he's got people in line.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: He apparently there's a uh receiver in Minnesota who played with him in high school that's looking to transfer.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: There's a four-star receiver that's at South Carolina that could potentially transfer and come with him.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, this would just be so unbelievably good for the program if he came.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Do I expect it?
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: No, because I I normally I just don't expect anything good to happen for Texas Tech football, as we've seen from the last decade.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, I'm not saying it's it's not gonna happen, but I would be uh, you know, I'm keeping my mind like I'm not gonna let myself get too invested into the idea of quin ooers to Lovick, because I mean the potential for it, and and I don't want to get heartbroken.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: I'm heartbroken way too often as a Texas Tech fan.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: So I, you know, if he decides to come, unbelievable, I would be so happy, but but I I'm not gonna get my hopes too too high.
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: Getting him would be an upset, you know.
- 7:42SPEAKER_05: It would be a coup because it's it's it's not exactly you know expected, whatever, like we're saying, like we're it's unbelievable that we're in this in serious consideration.
- 7:51SPEAKER_05: I think that's a great sign in general, whether we get him or not, to be seriously considered by a talented kid like that.
- 7:55SPEAKER_05: I think that just shows the draw that this new staff has.
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: That quite frankly, the last staff just didn't.
- 8:01SPEAKER_05: I don't think he's even thinking about it if Matt Wells is still the head coach at Texas Tech University.
- 8:06SPEAKER_05: I just don't think there's enough draw there with with Mr.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: Tremendous.
- 8:09SPEAKER_05: Uh no, no, no, no disrespect, but I think it's just the fact of the matter.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, I I think I think him coming to Texas Tech, like you were saying, it's it's kind of program changing.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: Is him going to UT or AM, does it make that big of a difference for this for programs like that?
- 8:24SPEAKER_05: Because is it not like kind of expected to get players like that there?
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: And while if you go to Texas Tech, it's just kind of revolutionary, you know.
- 8:31SPEAKER_05: You like you said, it gets start like this whole new thing.
- 8:34SPEAKER_05: I don't know if I'm trying to read too much into you know the non-tangibles like that.
- 8:38SPEAKER_05: Uh, but because obviously it'd still be a big deal for either of those schools, and obviously AM is probably out of the running at this point.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: But I I I'm with you while I don't have high, super high hopes that we will get him.
- 8:48SPEAKER_05: I am optimistic about it, and I think we're very much on the same complaining field for getting him as a school like TCU.
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: I think obviously UT is the big bad wolf you have to look out for just for the name alone.
- 8:58SPEAKER_05: Because I don't know if it's Sark, especially at the season they just had.
- 9:01SPEAKER_05: So I think it's just you have to unfortunately have to compete with brands like UT.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: So uh man, you know, hopefully he does decide to go into Texas Tech, and then we'll have an insane reaction episode of us just going crazy.
- 9:15SPEAKER_05: We'll have to do like an emergency pod.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: Oh, absolutely.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: If he decides to come, then we'll see the the recruits to follow.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: I again, I'm not gonna get my hopes too high here.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: You just thinking about the prospect of it gets me giddy.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: Hypotheticals are fun though.
- 9:30SPEAKER_05: So I think they're I think the only negative about getting a guy like Quinn Ewers is you'll probably start seeing the very first transfers out of the program, like uh in the QB room.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: So I you know, a kid as talented as a Baron Morton might want to look somewhere else to go get his playing minutes, and it'd be hard to blame him.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: You know, as much as we want to hold on to that West Texas kid, if you get the number one guy in the nation, I mean, what are you supposed to do?
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: You know, are you supposed to say no?
- 9:51SPEAKER_05: We we have our guy, or do we you get the most talented player coming out of high school?
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: It's just kind of it's just kind of a hypothetical there that that could come around.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Listen, I know we have a lot of Baron Morton stands uh here at Texas Tech, but uh you don't you don't turn down uh one of the generational talents coming out of high school, you just don't.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: Uh I love Baron Morton.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: I think Baron Morton's gonna be very good in college, I think he's gonna have a great career.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: He could even potentially go professionally, who knows?
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: But uh you don't you don't just say, hey, because we have Baron Morton and Donovan Smith, we don't want this guy, you know.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: He's a he's a pre- Madonna because he's he got a hundred, yeah, because he got a million dollars out of high school.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: Like, stop it, stop it.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: He got paid, he took advantage, like he's not a pre-modonna because he took advantage of NIL money.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Like, don't don't go there with that.
- 10:45SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely.
- 10:46SPEAKER_05: So you compare, you combine the what is coming into the program for sure as of today.
- 10:53SPEAKER_05: Mr.
- 10:54SPEAKER_05: Zach Kitley is coming home, and you want to compare that sort of offensive weapon with combine it with Kitley.
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, the Big 12 is on is on watch.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: That's a great transition there, guys.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Do you like that?
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Is that good?
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I feel like I stumbled through that.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: No, it's okay.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: You you did well.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: You'll you'll get him as you keep going.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: But no, man, I mean, exactly.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: Zach Kidley, uh named Texas Tech offensive coordinator.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Um, we were all kind of screaming for him on Twitter um when Sonny decided to take the Louisiana Tech job.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: And so uh yeah, we we ended up taking him.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: Zach Kidley, obviously, with his history here at Texas Tech, uh, former grad assistant uh under Cliff uh with Mahomes here.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Um I mean the you could just look at Western Kentucky's offensive stats from this season and realize how good this guy is because Western Kentucky had one of the worst offenses in college football last season, and he completely flipped that to they were second in FPS in total offense this season.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, they averaged 43 points a game, 528 yards a game.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, he's 30 years old.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: This is a home run hire uh for offensive coordinator.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: This is an up-and-coming guy who uh, as a program, if you were to get that like up and coming shining gem, uh, this is this is the dude.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I truly believe that.
- 12:20SPEAKER_05: I'm absolutely with you.
- 12:21SPEAKER_05: I think this is an S-tier hire.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: I I don't, I literally don't think we could do any better than this.
- 12:26SPEAKER_05: I think this is the very best you could do once we lost Sonny Cumby.
- 12:30SPEAKER_05: And I think the argument could be made this this might maybe be even better than Sonny Gumby because this guy, this guy is brilliant.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: This guy, and he's a true Kingsbury student.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: This guy came up through Kingsbury, and one thing we never had an issue with under King Cliff Kingsbury was his quarterback play in the offense.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: It was never ever an issue, it was always spectacular in the running for the best in the nation.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: And this guy looks like he's running with that and perfecting it that in his own way at such a young age.
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: And let's not talk about I mean, we can talk about what you know the even better things about him as well.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: He's from Abilene, he's a West Texas kid, and his father holds a national championship at Texas Tech in the in the track and field team, West Kiddley.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: So we gotta keep it all in the family here, man.
- 13:20SPEAKER_05: And I think this was a home run up higher.
- 13:22SPEAKER_05: I think tons of programs wanted him.
- 13:24SPEAKER_05: Um, like SEC programs like Auburn, apparently looking at him, and that's South Carolina, and as well as Indiana and such.
- 13:29SPEAKER_05: So I think he picked us over others because he wanted to come home.
- 13:33SPEAKER_05: And this is obviously gonna be a great place to be under Joey McGuire.
- 13:35SPEAKER_05: I think that's just gonna be a fun program to work in.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 13:39SPEAKER_03: Just look at what he's done with Bailey's Abbey these last couple of years, both at Houston Baptist and then at Western Kentucky.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, his offense speaks for itself.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: Some people are concerned that he doesn't run the ball enough, some people are concerned that uh, oh, you know, he's done it at smaller levels, you know, not as stiff of competition.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: How will he do at the power five level?
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: I think the guy's innovative enough, and I think the guy is smart enough to adjust and know that if you if you have a Taj Brooks on your team, you're gonna use him.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: You know, he's not gonna, if we do whatever quarterback is playing next year, I'm sure is not gonna throw the ball as much as Bailey Zappi has the last couple of years.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, he's gonna utilize his resources, and I think he did that both at Houston Baptist and at Western Kentucky.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: And man, if you're putting up 43 points a game, shoot, I'll take it.
- 14:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, uh that's what I was about to ask.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: You know, a lot of people are concerned with controlling the game on the offensive side, and obviously a lot of that has to do with running the ball.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: And I I get that, but you know, there were several times this season where we were struggling to score, like we and we needed to score fast and we just couldn't do it.
- 14:38SPEAKER_05: Um, and it feels like this it just isn't really an issue in this guy's style of offense.
- 14:42SPEAKER_05: Why do we have such an issue with going back to a more slinging high flying ball if we're scoring lots of points?
- 14:48SPEAKER_05: Isn't that that the goal of the game is to score more points than the other team?
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, the the I think the thing people just have PTSD from the Kingsbury years and not winning a lot of games and scoring a lot of points.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: And I get that.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: I I do.
- 15:00SPEAKER_03: I don't want to have that type of team again where we score 55, but the other team scores 60.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: I just don't, you know, because that leads to more losses.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: But uh, I I do think the defensive coordinator hire is going to be key now, uh, with Kitley, and he's gonna have to really work with as high powered of an offense that we do have.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: That was something that Cliff never figured out how to do, uh, was get a defensive coordinator to work with Mahomes and the offense scoring and you know, three, three, four plays, you know, going down the field.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: So uh it's gonna be crucial to see who this new defensive coordinator is that Joey McGuire decides to bring on.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: But uh I really truly think that Zach Kidley's offense can be, you know, a real game changer in not only uh the Big 12, but college football at the power five level.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this guy looks like the next big thing.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: He he really he has like all the makings of it.
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's it kind of stinks to say out loud, but I mean it in a really good way is I have such high hopes for this guy, is that I don't think he'll be at Texas Tech that long.
- 16:01SPEAKER_05: Like if Joey McGuire is successful here and and and uh he zach comes in and kills it as well.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: I feel like people are gonna be looking at him to fill in their head coaching job.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: And I would love that.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: That's a sign of success within your program.
- 16:12SPEAKER_05: But so because I am so with you, I think this guy's gonna just light the place on fire.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: I have high expectations for him.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna go necessarily there to where I'm worried about his prospects after Texas Tech.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna do that yet, but I think he has the absolute potential to be the next, you know, crazy good head coach, the next hot name that you know big programs want to hire, which is what you want at Texas Tech.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: You want these coordinators, you don't really necessarily want them to move on, but you want them to be good enough for the other programs to want him.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: And if you know, you're not gonna get an offensive coordinator that stays there forever.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: You're just not.
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: That's not the name of the game in college football anymore.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: So, uh, you know, if you want a guy that's just gonna be mediocre, but you know, good enough to want to stay, that's a stupid balance to want, guys.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, just just get a real get your best prospect and get your best team.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:08SPEAKER_05: And I mean, look at Sonny Gumby.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: He was here for one year and now he's getting a pretty good gig.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: You know, head coaching is probably his dream to do.
- 17:15SPEAKER_05: And our, you know, we're gonna talk about him later.
- 17:17SPEAKER_05: Mike Leach, he was he started out as an offensive coordinator, he changed everything, and now he's a head coach non-stop.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: So I'm just saying, I I see that greatness in him, is what I'm saying.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: So I mean, 30 years old, shoot.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's young as heck, and he's already getting these prospects.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: So, um, you know, big time hire.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: I'm really proud of this hire.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: I think Joey McGuire made the right decision here, bringing on Zach Kidley, bringing him home to Lubbock, uh, back with Texas Tech.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: I think this offense is gonna be a whole lot of fun next season.
- 17:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I completely agreed.
- 17:48SPEAKER_05: So, just real quick about his X's and O's, you know, like we're saying, people are gonna be worried about him running the ball.
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: Um, and you don't think that's gonna be a problem?
- 17:55SPEAKER_05: You think, like you just said, you think the running backs are talented enough to where we want to hand the ball off to them.
- 17:59SPEAKER_05: And I agree.
- 18:00SPEAKER_05: Do you think probably an issue at a place like the Houston Baptist and at this year's Western Kentucky is that he's playing against competition that's full of teams that are more talented than him, so he compensates by slinging the ball more?
- 18:12SPEAKER_05: Do you think that's probably more of what it is, where he's just trying to balance, you know, lack of talent, so he's not gonna run in it as much.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: So perhaps the running backs aren't quite as good, so he's just trying to get it out quick, move it down the field.
- 18:22SPEAKER_05: Do you think that's probably more remnants of what he's been having to deal with, or do you that think that's just how he likes to play ball?
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: I think he's utilized the players that he has on his team in the correct way.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: I think he's had Bailey's happy the last couple of years, who has been if he he's been the most underrated quarterback in college football, he really has.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, even when he was at Houston Baptist and and this year at Western Kentucky, I mean, he's putting up stats, Mahomes level stats, yeah, when he was at tech.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh, the guy knows how to sling it, and he knows, and if he can sling it 50 times a game and y'all can score 43 points a game, you do it.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: I think if you add to the equation a Taj Brooks or a Sir Roderick Thompson, it's not just like geet it out because you have a you have a this is your play style and you're just gonna throw it 50 times a game.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: That could be it.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: If we get a guy like Quinn Ewers, I mean, sure, you do that because he's gonna be really good.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, but also, you know, if you have those running backs, utilize them.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: And I think he's a smart enough guy to incorporate that into his offense.
- 19:25SPEAKER_05: You know, you're looking back at the Houston Baptist game, doesn't sting nearly as much anymore.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: Because I remember whenever we were whenever we played them that everyone was talking about how, oh, here's this bright grad assistant from tech who's at his first offensive coordinator job at HBU.
- 19:38SPEAKER_05: Look how good this guy is.
- 19:40SPEAKER_05: We should keep our eyes on him.
- 19:41SPEAKER_05: Lots of people were saying that.
- 19:42SPEAKER_05: And I remember watching Bailey Zappy just sling on us, and we were all taking five years off our life with every single play because he gouged us.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: I was saying this kid is probably the most under-recruited quarterback I've ever seen in my life because I thought he was awesome and he's proven to be awesome.
- 19:59SPEAKER_05: And I think maybe that's Zach Kitley being able to recognize greatness in players like that.
- 20:03SPEAKER_05: So just I'm just saying, like tech fans, and even even even if it's not Quentin Ewers, because obviously Quentin speaks for himself in greatness, but you can see Zach Kitley slaying defense with a guy like Barry Morton or or Donovan Smith.
- 20:16SPEAKER_05: I just think this is an absolute upgrade, just an absolute win for this team for next season, all in all.
- 20:22SPEAKER_05: I I really do think this is 11 out of 10 higher.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: No doubt, no doubt.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: I agree fully.
- 20:27SPEAKER_03: We should talk about some other hires because we got news uh about I don't know, maybe 20 minutes ago, that um Emman Jones coming back to Lubbock.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, he was here as he's coming back as the wide receivers coach.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: Um, he was here under Kingsbury.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: Uh recruited guys like Erica Zukama, recruited guys like TJ Vasher, recruited guys like Antoine Wesley.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: So he knows good receivers and he's coming back.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: He he spent some time at Kansas and uh he's officially coming back to Texas Tech as the wide receiver coach.
- 20:59SPEAKER_05: He's done pretty good at Kansas, too.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: He's brought some recruits that are way too good to be going to KU.
- 21:04SPEAKER_05: I think that was all him because he's just a great salesman and he and he knows Texas so well.
- 21:07SPEAKER_05: He brings a lot of guys from Texas to Kansas, and he's a former high school coach.
- 21:12SPEAKER_05: I learned this today that he's actually a former high school coach, uh brought into the the Texas Tech staff.
- 21:16SPEAKER_05: So he knows how all that circles work.
- 21:18SPEAKER_05: Again, we're recognizing a theme here with the Joey McGuire coaching staff, is it's full of Texas high school guys, and you love it.
- 21:26SPEAKER_05: Zach Kitley might be the first one to come to Texas Tech that isn't directly tied to the Texas high school football scene.
- 21:33SPEAKER_05: So it's just you really see all this happening.
- 21:35SPEAKER_05: And man, it's kind of funny to see us returning to Kingsbury, isn't it?
- 21:38SPEAKER_05: You know, we were we thought we were so ready to move on from that era of the Kingsbury era, but look at us injecting it immediately back into the program with two hires today, directly from the Kingsbury tree.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I think this is why it's gonna be so interesting to see who Joey brings on as defensive coordinator and Joey himself being a defensive guy.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: You know, Cliff obviously ran the plays.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Did all that, you know.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: He he did he ran the offense while he was the head coach at Texas Tech.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: You know, he didn't really need an offensive coordinator.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: So Joey's gonna need an offensive coordinator.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: And I think Zach Kitley is gonna be the guy to 100%.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: And he's gonna work with Emmett Jones now because I think he was also named the passing game coordinator, which was a little weird.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: I would have thought Zach Kitley would have been that guy, but um uh those two together, I think running the offense.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: Joey focuses on the motivation factor, on uh getting his guys ready to play, something that I think Matt Wells seriously lacked.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Um, and and just having that defensive mindset as well.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, he was the linebackers coach at Baylor.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: He also coached, I think, the defensive line at times.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: So uh he knows defense.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm excited to see who he brings on as defensive coordinator, but I think the staff is coming together very, very nicely.
- 22:52SPEAKER_05: I agree.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: I've had zero complaints with the staff so far, and like we keep coming back to we're gonna keep coming back to it over and over again, is it's just all eyes are gonna be on the defense.
- 23:00SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm glad to see we nailed the offensive higher, but we've been pretty used to good offenses.
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: Maybe we've gotten a little spoiled with that, and it was kind of what's starting to wear off these past couple of years because these offenses they've been serviceable, but they've also been disappointing at times.
- 23:13SPEAKER_05: So it's uh it would be really nice to see us return to form with just absolute explosiveness with never being worried about scoring the ball.
- 23:21SPEAKER_05: So, um, but it like like we keep coming back to man, I'm glad we did get a more defensive-minded guy with Joey McGuire and a more motivational guy.
- 23:28SPEAKER_05: And I think I think you nailed it on both fronts there.
- 23:30SPEAKER_05: And all eyes are on the DC.
- 23:31SPEAKER_05: I'm sure we're gonna be seeing seeing it come around very soon because you know, now that we have the OC, I think the DC is gonna be right behind.
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, especially now that college football season is winding down.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: I'm sure we're gonna get that defensive coordinator here.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: You may know by the time we're listening to this episode.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Who friggin' knows?
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: Um, but we should also mention Lance Barilo, named as the strength and conditioning coach.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: He is coming from LSU, I believe.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: He was an assistant on the national championship winning LSU Tiger team.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, assistant strength and conditioning.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: He wasn't the strength and conditioning coach, but he was an assistant.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: So he knows he knows what it's like on a championship team.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: So that's big time.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: I think this is a good hire.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: It's really good just to have a guy to utilize all your resources here at Texas Tech, uh, with your new facilities and everything like that.
- 24:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, and you know, keep him in shape, man.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: This is it's such a crucial part of the program.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: And uh getting this guy who's been with LSU now, uh, I think it's a big time hire.
- 24:24SPEAKER_05: It's it's sports, man.
- 24:25SPEAKER_05: It's it's athleticism.
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: So you you gotta have that on in check as well.
- 24:28SPEAKER_05: These background, these or these behind the scenes, I should say, coaches matter too.
- 24:33SPEAKER_05: So I'm glad to see that we're we're we're going out and getting these guys as well.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: So uh excited to see how we can, you know, put whip these boys up in the shape.
- 24:40SPEAKER_05: So this all again, all checks offs on the uh the coaching staff so far.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so keep an eye out for uh defensive coordinator and some of these other coaches to be filled in uh today and tomorrow.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: By the time you're listening to this, I'm sure more will be announced.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: Um, Brent Venables going o you.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: That was some other big news that happened.
- 25:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that that is uh within the conference for now, you know.
- 25:04SPEAKER_05: So that's certainly something to talk about.
- 25:06SPEAKER_05: So yeah, it's it's an interesting hire.
- 25:09SPEAKER_05: It's not that surprising.
- 25:10SPEAKER_05: Once it popped up really the first day, really, it kind of seemed to never go away.
- 25:15SPEAKER_05: So it's it's kind of interesting to see Brent Brent Venevils finally leave his defensive coordinator position because you know this guy's been courted every single year for a head coaching uh job, and I don't know if he was like waiting for a job like OU more than maybe OU really just wrote him a check that he could he couldn't refuse.
- 25:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's kind of interesting how all this unfolds.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I really think OU was blindsided by Lincoln Riley.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so they needed to maneuver and maneuver quick because of the state of the coaching carousel in college football.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, they went after the best coordinator out there, the highest paid defensive guy, well, highest paid coordinator in college football in Brent Venables, who, like you said, was courted by multiple universities maybe even the last few years.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and I mean he was he was during that whole uh uh during the Matt Wells uh era, I think, when we when we decided to hire Matt Wells, I think we also talked to Venables.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: I know him and Kirby are pretty tight, but um yeah, apparently he's bringing Jeff Levy as well from Ole Miss to be the OC for there.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, I don't know if it's confirmed, but it's it's like in the like football scoop, you know.
- 26:25SPEAKER_03: I'm saying that's nailed pretty much every one of these rumors.
- 26:27SPEAKER_05: Wow, I'm surprised that's not getting more crap than it is then, because you know, there's there's some people out there that are like, Hey, isn't this a guy that's attached to the Brials tree?
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: Very, very closely, and was like a big proponent of like the the don't fire our Brials because he is he's his son-in-law, I believe.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you know, he's a part of that whole thing.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: But uh so we're just gonna scoop that under the under the rug because it's oh you, yeah.
- 26:51SPEAKER_05: I I remember like whenever it was even kind of tossed out for tech, whether it was uh Kindle or Levy, everyone was like, If tech does this, you know, for either one of them, it was it was a big deal, and I'm just surprised it's immediately overlooked if it's OU's doing it.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: That's kind of crappy.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's just as connected as Kendall Brian's as to our problems.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: Yes, so you know, I I think Jeff Levy is just as much of a piece of crap and as part of that the heck, oh you.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, it is it is what it is, man.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: If you're a good uh offensive mind, you'll get a job, I guess.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, it looks like Jeff Levy's gonna go over to OU with Brent Venables.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: Um, I think it's a good hire.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, you know, I think Brent Venables would have been a good hire no matter where he went.
- 27:31SPEAKER_03: Uh exactly.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: Uh that Clemson defense has been something something insane these last few years.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, I I uh is it gonna be worse than Rink Lincoln Riley?
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think so.
- 27:44SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 27:44SPEAKER_03: Uh I think Lincoln I'm with you.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: Lincoln Riley was generational coach, in my opinion.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think he uh they really lost something special uh with him going to USC, and I think he's gonna completely change USC around.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: So I I guess this is a good hire as any.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know if OU is gonna be the OU that they normally are.
- 28:03SPEAKER_05: So Bob Bob Scoop stepped down for a reason because he knew Lincoln Riley was gonna be the next big thing for OU.
- 28:09SPEAKER_05: He he did that for OU.
- 28:10SPEAKER_05: He knew Lincoln wasn't the guy, so and I I think OU is gonna take a step back just for the fact that they're having to go from outside.
- 28:17SPEAKER_05: I realize Venable's been attack at OU at one time, but it's been a while.
- 28:20SPEAKER_05: So they had to go from outside to pick up a guy that's not in their tree for the first time in a really long time.
- 28:26SPEAKER_05: Yep, and I think that's gonna set them back.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: And thank God, because I'm ready for OU to step back, which they kind of already have.
- 28:33SPEAKER_05: Um, it was good to see them out of the championship, but OU fans really are kidding themselves.
- 28:38SPEAKER_05: I know there's tons of OU fans out there saying that he uh Lincoln Riley regressed every single year.
- 28:42SPEAKER_05: Give me a break.
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: He won how many Big 12 championships in a row, took them to the playoff how many times.
- 28:47SPEAKER_05: It was gonna be inevitable whether when when he was gonna win a uh a national championship.
- 28:51SPEAKER_05: So I really don't want to hear it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_05: Um, I think they're just kind of coping with it.
- 28:55SPEAKER_05: So it's uh I don't think Veneboles is gonna be quite the guy, but he's I think he's a stellar football mind, and he's gonna keep them in good shape.
- 29:02SPEAKER_05: They're still probably gonna be winning at least eight games a year, so it's still gonna be OU.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: No doubt, no doubt.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: OU is gonna be good.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, surprise, surprise.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, let's talk.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: Uh we have a bowl game, Texas Tech.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: Nice, uh, nice little bowl game, something that TCU and UT don't have.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, we are confirmed to playing the Liberty Bowl versus an interesting opponent, to say the least.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, we talked about what bowl game we wanted to go to, and we both wanted to go to the Liberty Bowl.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: We were really hyped about it.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: We wanted to play an SEC team, and then uh, you know, as the bowls trickled down, the news started coming out who's going to what bowl and everything like that.
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: Um, we saw LSU was playing Kansas State, and you know, Auburn was in another bowl, Florida was in another bowl.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: Uh and it ended up being Mississippi State, Texas Tech and Michael Leach are reuniting to play against each other in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: Uh insane.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: College football's nuts, dude.
- 30:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that that's that's uh as they say, appointment television.
- 30:08SPEAKER_05: You know, it's it's gonna be fun.
- 30:09SPEAKER_05: I I don't think it's gonna be like controversial or anything.
- 30:13SPEAKER_05: I think it's gonna be a fun matchup.
- 30:14SPEAKER_05: I really do wish we were playing them with like a full-fledged tech team because this this is this is one that is fall like falling apart at the scenes just because coaches are going different places.
- 30:24SPEAKER_05: We don't have our head coach in right now, and the one that's in is leaving for another school, yeah.
- 30:29SPEAKER_05: So it's kind of we're in a tough situation, and they're not like they have their coach, they have their staff, they have their players, so it's not quite exactly a fair fight, but it'll still be a fun game.
- 30:39SPEAKER_05: And I think just the the the title of Mike Leach versus Texas Tech is fun in general.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: It is, it is.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: I know a lot of people have a lot to say about Mike Leach here uh in the Texas Tech community.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: Um, we let it out there on our on the pods account what we feel about Mike Leach.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: Um, we like him still, we think he got screwed at Texas Tech.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: We don't owe him anything, and um we we don't want Mike Leach back, you know, we don't.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: We're moving on from that part of our history.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: I know there's still that group that just overwhelmingly adores him and wants him to come back to Texas Tech, and we gotta pay him all this money that he's owed, and you know, all this kind of stuff.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: I think there you gotta meet in the middle here, guys.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: I think you know, Mike Leach is a crucial part of Texas Tech history, and he should be appreciated for that.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: But also, it's time to move on, and also the pirate curse does not exist, it's not real, it's not real.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: My god.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: If he has if if the pirate curse exists, he has it too.
- 31:48SPEAKER_05: The guy still has never won a conference championship, guys.
- 31:51SPEAKER_05: We're we're we're we keep acting like this man is a god amongst men.
- 31:54SPEAKER_05: What he's he's just a pretty good coach, especially since he left tech.
- 31:58SPEAKER_05: He he's pretty good, yes.
- 32:00SPEAKER_05: He's he's one of the better coaches out there, but we're acting like this guy is generational.
- 32:04SPEAKER_05: I mean, he he did change college football with his offense, but everyone started doing it better than even he did.
- 32:09SPEAKER_05: So it's just it's a it's a we love we like Mike Leach.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: We're not trying to rip on Mike Leach, but it does drive me up a wall whenever I see people like that are even gonna cheer for him over us here in Raider Land.
- 32:21SPEAKER_05: It's just you really gotta move on.
- 32:22SPEAKER_05: It's been that cheers.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: I still don't think that's a huge number.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: It's not a big number.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: I think people are kind of overblowing that a little bit.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they do exist.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: There are people that actually love Mike Leach that much that are gonna root for him over the school that you normally root for, which is of course idiotic.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Don't do that.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: Hey, root for Texas Tech.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: How about that?
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: I don't know, just an idea.
- 32:45SPEAKER_05: Well, we have some time to watch this fun uh timeline climax.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: So we we got a couple weeks.
- 32:51SPEAKER_05: So hope our boys get plenty of practicing.
- 32:53SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be really fun, man.
- 32:54SPEAKER_05: And we'll talk about it more as it gets closer because it's just it's gonna be a wild ride no matter what.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 33:00SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be Tuesday, December 28th, 5 45 p.m.
- 33:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, gonna be on ESPN.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: It is at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee.
- 33:10SPEAKER_05: You've been there before.
- 33:11SPEAKER_05: I have.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: I've been to a Memphis game there where they utterly just fricked Yukon, just obliterated the Huskies.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: Yukon's in a tough first quarter.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: Yukon's in a tough, tough uh spot right now.
- 33:25SPEAKER_05: To Yukon's credit, Memphis was really good that year.
- 33:28SPEAKER_05: They had that really good running back, but it's it's uh it was a tough one for him, that's for sure.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: Tough scene.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, I will say Mississippi State 7 and 5 on the year.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: Uh wins over Louisiana, Sonny Cumbee's Louisiana Tech.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: Um, NC State, Texas AM, Vandy, Kentucky, Auburn, and Tennessee Tech.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: So, you know, wins are iffy.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: You got that good win against AM.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: That's solid.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: Auburn was six and six, you know, whatever.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: Kentucky, I guess, is a pretty decent win, nine and three, but they are in the SEC East, not as strong of a division as the West by far.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Um, NC State's a pretty good win.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: Um, but they lost to Memphis, LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, an old miss.
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, I will say, beside take out the Alabama loss.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: In those other four losses, they only lost by a combined 18 points in all of those games.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: So, you know, two points to Memphis, three points to LSU, three to Arkansas, and 10 to all miss.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: So, this is a this is a good team.
- 34:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, Mississippi State is is a good team.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: It this is gonna be tough when you have coaches.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're oh, they're absolutely favorite.
- 34:36SPEAKER_03: I think they opened up minus eight, but that will progressively increase, I believe.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, and they're gonna have their whole coaching staff there.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: So they have an advantage over us, like you mentioned earlier.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: Sonny Cumbie is going to coach the bowl game, so I think that's cool.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have that extra little motivation factor.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: Hey, one last ride, let's get it for the seniors, you know, all that sort of stuff.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: The pump check's gonna be there, yeah.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: The pump jack mentality is going to be there for the bowl game.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: So I think it's gonna be exciting.
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: I'm happy with it.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: I think the storyline is absolutely there.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: So let's bring it on.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: I want to kick Mike Leach's ass.
- 35:13SPEAKER_05: That would be so awesome if we did.
- 35:15SPEAKER_05: Well, that it would just be so unexpected, and and no one could say anything about Mike Leach attack ever again or like the Pirate Curse ever again.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I just want us to win so the Pirate Curse people will stop.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: That's really why I want us to win.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: I want us to win, obviously, because I want Texas Tech to beat Mississippi State in the Molle.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: I'd like to end the season with seven wins, a winning season.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: I would, I would absolutely love that.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, we'll we'll give you a full game preview as it gets a little closer, uh a little closer to Christmas there.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: But um, I did want to bring up something before we talk basketball here, and that's okay, so we put out this tweet earlier.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech is six and six this year.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: We fired our coach midseason, Joey McGuire hired his Texas tech head coach, new head coach for the upcoming years.
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: Sonny Cumby, the offensive coordinator, has left for Louisiana Tech Job, so he is not going to return.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: And now we got the news that Keith Patterson, uh, of all people, got a head coaching opportunity at Abilene Christian.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: So we have no offensive coordinator, we have no defensive coordinator, and we have no head coach that started.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: Sure, no, no Tom Radal.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: Respect to Tom Radal.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: We haven't had a single player enter the transfer portal.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: We are one of two teams, us and Georgia, to have no no players of our team enter the transfer portal yet.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: Um that's nuts, that's insane.
- 36:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, and you you gotta contribute that to Matt Wells too.
- 36:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, he he was he was we never questioned the kind of people he brought around the program character-wise and commitment-wise.
- 37:03SPEAKER_05: So it's all these players really look like they're sold in on each other and Texas Tech.
- 37:08SPEAKER_05: And I bet bringing in a guy like Joey Maguire doesn't hurt either.
- 37:13SPEAKER_05: Because he's this guy, the guy is he's electric.
- 37:16SPEAKER_05: He is um, what's the word a radiant?
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: What's the word I'm looking for?
- 37:19SPEAKER_05: You know, he's like magnetic, you know.
- 37:21SPEAKER_05: People people are drawn to him just because he has that like warm energy that emits off of him.
- 37:26SPEAKER_05: So I wonder if you know the players obviously drawn into that and believe into believe in that as well.
- 37:30SPEAKER_05: But just this culture that's built foundationally into this program right now, it's it's admirable because it's just insane that no one's as no one has entered the portal yet.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: I I you know, you do give some credit to Matt Wells for getting these good people in the program and good players, you know, to be honest.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, you get a guy like Reggie Pearson and Rashad Williams and guys that weren't loved, you know, by their other programs, weren't getting playing time, and they found a home at Texas Tech.
- 37:59SPEAKER_03: And I think Matt Wells did a good job of incorporating them with the program and and and you know getting them acquainted with each other.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: I think Matt Wells deserves some credit for that.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: But this is more about Joey McGuire than it is Matt Wells.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: I think Joey Maguire has talked to every single player that has eligibility that can return for Texas Tech.
- 38:21SPEAKER_03: And I think he's convinced them that he's building something here and that he is potentially getting this number one quarterback recruit that would be the best recruit in in Texas Tech history by far, and at a lot of a lot of other schools by far, um, here to the program.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: And he's already improved the recruiting class in 2022 from 70-something to 40-something.
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: He's already moved up 30 spots, he's got the number nine, I believe, recruiting class of 2023.
- 38:53SPEAKER_03: I think he's uh the players believe in Joey Maguire, the current players that are already on this team, and I think that says a ton about who Joey Maguire is.
- 39:04SPEAKER_05: It might be premature to say, and maybe even cliche, but it really does feel like Joe Maguire is a program changer.
- 39:10SPEAKER_05: You know, everyone wants to believe that whenever you hire a new head coach, but this guy does seem completely different.
- 39:17SPEAKER_05: I've I've never seen a coach like this, especially at Texas Tech.
- 39:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I've only seen a couple of coaches in my young fandom, but this guy is completely different.
- 39:27SPEAKER_05: He just this guy is he is like I said, he he's just electric, and he brings something to the table that is just you can't put on anybody, you can't learn it.
- 39:38SPEAKER_05: And it's just yeah, I just think it comes naturally to him, and his experience is unmatched, it's just so different than anything you normally get.
- 39:44SPEAKER_05: So I'm with you, man.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: I think a lot of this has to do with Joe McGuire, and it's it's just so exciting to watch unfold.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: He's a combination of so many good things that you want in a head coach, a recruiter, a motivator, a guy that people just love to talk to, a guy who knows how to talk to the fans, a guy who knows how to talk to the players, who also knows football and knows how to hire the right people.
- 40:06SPEAKER_03: So I think he, I mean, he hasn't shown anything to show me that he's gonna be a mistake or a bad hire of any sort.
- 40:13SPEAKER_03: So obviously, we'll see what we put on the field next season.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, there's a lot of time in between then.
- 40:18SPEAKER_03: But as of right now, uh Joey McGuire deserves a ton of praise.
- 40:23SPEAKER_05: Hashtag let's go, as they say.
- 40:26SPEAKER_05: As they say, I am so excited for the future of this program.
- 40:30SPEAKER_05: And can I get a live update here on Talking Tech Bar?
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: Do it live update.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Uh oh, live update for you for you.
- 40:37SPEAKER_05: It is officially announced that Zach Kitley is our offensive coordinator.
- 40:41SPEAKER_04: Oh, there it is.
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: They use this wonderful picture of him with none other than Patrick Mahomes.
- 40:48SPEAKER_05: And can I just say this man is a tree?
- 40:51SPEAKER_05: He makes Patrick Mahomes look like a dwarf.
- 40:54SPEAKER_05: So Patrick Mahomes is not a short man.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: So David Collier of Red Raider Nation tweeted out some like old high school clips of Zach Kitley playing basketball.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: Dude is a tree, like he's tall as hell.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: He's tall as hell.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, dude.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: So hyped.
- 41:13SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, that picture's nuts.
- 41:15SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: Dude, Mahomes is like 6'3.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: What is Zach Kitley?
- 41:20SPEAKER_03: Is he like six seven?
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Let us know what what how tall is Zach Kitley here?
- 41:26SPEAKER_04: This is nuts.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's things you look for in your coach.
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: Yes, things you look for.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: That's for sure.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: No, that's awesome.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: Officially broken here on Talking Tech Pod.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: Uh as you're listening to what 10 hours.
- 41:46SPEAKER_05: We are your hashtag sources.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: We're we have hashtag sources.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: Um no, awesome.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: Uh Zach Kidley officially, officially introduced as the Texas Tech Offensive Coordinator.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: Uh what I mean, we already talked about it.
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: What a great hire by Joey McCartney.
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, let's let's let's let's repeat that entire 30 minutes conversation.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: We won't do that for you.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: Um obviously good to see it announced officially.
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, there's always that thought in the back of your mind, like, hey, come on, let's get it officially.
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: I need to hear it from Texas Tech before, you know.
- 42:25SPEAKER_05: Well, there was another reason why I wanted to get to officially officially, and I think we started the podcast with it.
- 42:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because I want I want a certain someone to know who is offensive coordinator would be officially officially.
- 42:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think uh hashtag quinning needs to become a thing.
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, I am gonna tweet that out so hard if he commits.
- 42:48SPEAKER_05: I I I saw this on Twitter.
- 42:50SPEAKER_05: I forgot forgive me if I I've already forgot your name, but he said we're we're gonna call the uh the Tex Tech offense the Zack Attack, aren't we?
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: I'm like, Well crap, I guess we have to call it the Zack Attack.
- 43:00SPEAKER_03: We kind of have to.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: The rhymes, man.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: The the ultimate amount of rhymes that will come with Zach Kitley and Quin Owers will be tremendous.
- 43:13SPEAKER_05: All right, well, I think we've spent well then enough time here talking about a man's height for way too long.
- 43:19SPEAKER_05: What else we got on the topic?
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately, we have to get to basketball, and I say unfortunately, not in a in a super bad way.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, listen, we lost to Providence.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: Um, it was a bad game from Texas Tech.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: I think if you replay this game in late February or March, I think you get an overwhelming Texas Tech win.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: I think this team has, it looks like a team that has played seven games together.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: Um, it looks like a team that has a ton of different people uh trying to figure out each other.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: And I think it's a first year head coach in Mark Adams that is trying to figure out his team.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: I'm not overreacting when I'm talking about this game.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: Uh Texas Tech, by the way, loses 72 to 68.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: To Providence, uh in Providence, um, just a lot of issues.
- 44:05SPEAKER_03: Um, but ultimately it's not a big deal.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: I think this is a good learning uh curve for a lot of our guys.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: I think they're still learning how to play with each other, and I think this game helps that playing good competition.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: It sucks that we played such a weak schedule up to this point, but these games are gonna happen.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, the 2019 had these types of games as well.
- 44:26SPEAKER_03: So, you know, don't freak out too much, Red Raider fans, but I do have uh a lot of beefs with what went on in in this game particularly.
- 44:34SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 44:35SPEAKER_05: It was a generally frustrating game to watch.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: We start out and we're we're on fire, baby.
- 44:39SPEAKER_05: For the first 10 minutes, we are smoking the friars.
- 44:42SPEAKER_05: We we go up 14 points.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: It looks like we're about to run away with this game, and then the wheels just completely fall off.
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: We don't score what like five minutes, or at least it felt that way.
- 44:54SPEAKER_03: Eight minutes.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: It was the last two minutes.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: The last eight minutes.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: I don't know if we didn't score in the last eight minutes, but it was definitely once they switched to zone, which was I think at about the 12-minute mark or like eight minutes left in the first half when Providence switched to zone, we just had no answer for it.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: And it's like, guys, two, three zone.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: I get it, we haven't played with each other, but oh my god, how did we not prepare for this?
- 45:17SPEAKER_05: Is that on is that not unfortunately on the coaching staff, though?
- 45:21SPEAKER_05: Isn't that just something you should be practicing in the gym, you know, to deal with a defense like that?
- 45:25SPEAKER_05: Because that's a pretty common defense.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: It is, it is, it's a common defense.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: It is it, but once you get in an in-game scenario, it's different from practicing against your own guys.
- 45:35SPEAKER_03: It just is, and you know, I do blame Mark Adams a little bit for not having his team prepared and not making the adjustments until halftime because I think we did adjust at halftime pretty well, and we managed to find our offense.
- 45:47SPEAKER_03: We were much more patient, we were finding guys.
- 45:49SPEAKER_03: It wasn't just you know, balls to the walls, just getting stupid turnovers and charges and not knowing how to play against the two, three defense.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: I think we figured it out more in the second half.
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: We just made a lot of crucial mistakes, a lot of fouls.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: The referees definitely made their presence known in this game.
- 46:07SPEAKER_05: I know a lot of you are gonna say that it's it's it's why we lost, or perhaps they were just the referees were just very annoying.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: But they they certainly the zebras made their presence felt in this game.
- 46:15SPEAKER_05: Like the amount of free throws that were made that were sent to the line was insane.
- 46:20SPEAKER_05: And I've never seen that many in my life uh during a college basketball game.
- 46:24SPEAKER_05: So it was certainly a factor, and we didn't show up to the line.
- 46:27SPEAKER_05: We we didn't have a great uh night at the line.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: So and and unfortunately, the priors did a little better in that sense, and I think that definitely helped put them over.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: Okay, you're gonna give me you're gonna give me riled up here now.
- 46:41SPEAKER_05: You love blaming the reps, Steven.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: You love you know me, you know, you know me.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: I absolutely love blaming the referees.
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: Uh no, I I hate, I hate blaming the referees.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: And oh my god, our fan base, Texas Tech fans, please.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: If you're listening to this podcast, stop blaming the referees for every single thing that goes wrong for Texas Tech.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: Stop it, please.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: It's they were not the reason we lost this game.
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: The reason we lost this game was crucial mistakes down the stretch.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: Listen, they called nobody likes a ref crew that calls that many fouls.
- 47:25SPEAKER_03: Nobody does, but they happen and they they happen occasionally, and you need to deal with it.
- 47:30SPEAKER_03: And in that first half, we did not deal with it very well.
- 47:33SPEAKER_03: We saw they were calling everything, and we still played way too aggressive for what the refs were calling.
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: Terrence Shannon got in foul trouble early.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: He didn't need to do that, he knew what was happening.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: He had many drives where he got past the defender, could just take that pull-up jumper 12 feet away, instead he plowed into the defender.
- 47:51SPEAKER_03: Of course, you're gonna get a foul charge call.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: Of course, because it's this ref crew.
- 47:55SPEAKER_03: You have to recognize, and this is on Mark Adams, too.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: You got to recognize and let your players know that these refs are gonna be very whistle happy.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: You got to move past it.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: The refs are not the reason you lose the basketball game.
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: I could talk about so many different mistakes we made down the stretch, and it's not on the refs, it just isn't.
- 48:14SPEAKER_05: It certainly wasn't the refs that's that completely stagnated our offense.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: That was not the case.
- 48:20SPEAKER_05: Um, and it was it just me or was our passing just off?
- 48:23SPEAKER_05: Like there was a lot, it felt like there's a good amount of turnovers from us, and it just seems like we were just really going to get a rhythm going on that side of the ball.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: Well, nobody could get a rhythm going because of this referee crew, and I understand the frustration with that because when you're getting all these foul calls, everybody getting sent to the line, nobody can get in a real rhythm.
- 48:40SPEAKER_03: I get that, but down the stretch, and I'll I'll highlight three plays in particular.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: Um, Kevin McCullough, uh, and and really, this isn't just K Mac, it's it's a lot of guys on this team going for the steal so often.
- 48:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, so often it hurts uh because you get so many foul calls.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: And listen, I understand um this team does get a lot of steals.
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: We play pretty good defense for the most part.
- 49:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, that leads to transition buckets.
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: I get it.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: When you're down one with a minute left, you don't go for the steal.
- 49:17SPEAKER_03: You don't.
- 49:18SPEAKER_03: And Kevin McCullough went for the steal and got his fifth foul and got out of the game.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: That's a mistake that you don't need to do.
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: Just play it up front.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: Just play it.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: Play your defense like you can, keep you between uh the man in the basket, normal fundamental crap.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, seriously.
- 49:35SPEAKER_03: Um play number two, Terrence Shannon yeeting the three-pointer there at the end.
- 49:42SPEAKER_03: Um, I I mean, every coach in America would tell you that's a horrible shot.
- 49:47SPEAKER_03: I know he just made the one right before that.
- 49:49SPEAKER_03: That one's spectacular.
- 49:50SPEAKER_03: That one was a terrible shot.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: It was a terrible shot, and he just happened to make it.
- 49:56SPEAKER_03: I know that's like I know basketball's maneuvering to that style of play where we play a lot of hero ball down the stretch.
- 50:02SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, if Taryn Shannon missed that first one, we would have been blaming him for that first one because it is a terrible shot, three feet behind the three-point line.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, that one, a little different situation because you are down four and you kind of need a bucket real quick.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: So, you know, he made it, that was great.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: But you're down one.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: There's 25 seconds left.
- 50:22SPEAKER_03: And 23 seconds left on the shot clock.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: Like you don't you you get to the basket, you don't need a three-pointer from three feet behind the three-point line.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: You just don't.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: And I'm afraid Terrence Shannon kind of has that mentality that he needs to prove something this year, yeah, to get to the NBA and to get to that next level and to show that he's the guy and everything like that.
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: And man, that's not the that's not what the good teams do.
- 50:47SPEAKER_05: They don't know that's what it really felt like.
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: I completely agree.
- 50:50SPEAKER_05: He really, you like you said, hero ball, but he really looked like he was just trying to be the hero.
- 50:54SPEAKER_05: And he kind of, I'm not gonna say I'm I'm gonna blame him for the loss, but you're truly either this a superhero or a zero in that moment, and yeah, it's just it's too much of a high stakes thing to do.
- 51:06SPEAKER_05: It just just I can't believe we didn't just try to run a play, you know, get in, just drive it in.
- 51:11SPEAKER_05: But it's just just sort of or I bring were we down three at that point?
- 51:16SPEAKER_03: We were down one at that point.
- 51:17SPEAKER_05: We're down one we didn't need a three-point, we didn't need that.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: So when you're down one, you get to the basket.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: That's what you try to do.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: You try to get a foul, you try to go to the free throw line, all that sort of stuff.
- 51:25SPEAKER_03: And uh it was just a bad shot.
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: Literally, everybody in America would tell you that that's a bad shot.
- 51:30SPEAKER_03: And he took it, and you know, if he made it, it would and we would have all been praising him and everything like that, but uh he didn't, and it's a bad shot, and you don't need to do that again.
- 51:40SPEAKER_03: And um, this is this is something that it's it's it's a bigger issue because you know, Terrence Shannon is a fantastic player, he's a guy that I believe 100% will play in the NBA one day.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: Um, when you want to build a championship level NCAA basketball team, you need a bunch of unselfish players.
- 52:02SPEAKER_03: Look at Baylor last season.
- 52:03SPEAKER_03: You know, Davion Mitchell was fantastic, but he when he didn't have it, he passed it off, you know.
- 52:10SPEAKER_03: Um, so we just need guys that play unselfish.
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: And I and listen, this is the seventh game of the season.
- 52:16SPEAKER_03: Like, I'm not gonna freak out about it.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna freak out that Terrence Shannon is all of a sudden this unselfish guy who will never pass and he's always gonna take the last shot and everything like that.
- 52:25SPEAKER_03: I just think that shot was really bad, and I hope he learns from it.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: That's really what I'm I'm hoping for.
- 52:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you opened up with the with the segment before we went into this tangent with the pretty much the summary of this whole game.
- 52:38SPEAKER_05: Is it was a great learning opportunity for pretty much everybody in the game.
- 52:41SPEAKER_05: You know, they're these are still young men, you know, sure they've been playing the game for a long time, but there's still a lot to learn, especially now that they're in this completely new team, new coaching staff.
- 52:49SPEAKER_05: There's just transitions that need to be made.
- 52:51SPEAKER_05: And the Fryers played their butts off, they never gave up.
- 52:53SPEAKER_05: They they could have gave up wherever we were trying to trout them, they didn't.
- 52:56SPEAKER_05: They played well, you know, they they did beat us.
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: That's a good team.
- 53:00SPEAKER_03: Providence is a good team.
- 53:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, should we have beat them?
- 53:04SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: Are they still a really good team?
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 53:08SPEAKER_03: Two things can be true here.
- 53:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, they're a big East team, they're a senior-led program.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: They have about, I think we highlighted three certain seniors um when we were doing the Providence uh preview.
- 53:20SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I mean, this is a good team.
- 53:22SPEAKER_03: It's not it's not a shame to lose to Providence in their house.
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you know, the only thing I'm really worried about is we have three big non-conference games here in in the month of December.
- 53:34SPEAKER_03: And Providence was probably the easiest one, as we have one coming up tomorrow here against Tennessee, and then we play Gonzaga in a neutral site game in Phoenix as well.
- 53:44SPEAKER_03: So, of those three, I wanted to go one and two.
- 53:47SPEAKER_03: I would have been happy with one and two, and not getting this Providence one is is you know, it sucks.
- 53:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 53:54SPEAKER_05: So it's definitely redemption time, definitely learn from time to learn from our mistakes here, and they take it to a really good Tennessee team in the MSG.
- 54:01SPEAKER_05: So, this this this Tennessee team isn't playing around, so it's definitely one to look forward to next tomorrow.
- 54:05SPEAKER_05: I'm really excited about it because I do think improvements have been made.
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: I bet a lot of these guys have watched a lot of film and have really tried to hone their mistakes here in this this past week.
- 54:13SPEAKER_05: So they've had a lot of time to polish themselves off.
- 54:16SPEAKER_05: So I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can do against the volunteers because uh that volunteer program has been hot for a while now, and so have we.
- 54:23SPEAKER_05: We've been really good too.
- 54:24SPEAKER_05: So let's get back to that big out there and show it.
- 54:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 54:28SPEAKER_03: That's number 13, Tennessee.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, so you know, top 15 win, put that on a resume.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: Gotta love it.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: That'll be good uh come March.
- 54:37SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, like you mentioned, Madison Square Garden.
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: You know, we played a game in Madison Square Garden before.
- 54:42SPEAKER_03: We've upset the number one team in the country at Madison Square Garden before.
- 54:46SPEAKER_03: So we know how to play these games.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: Um, it's gonna be the Jimmy V Classic Tuesday, December 7th, which is probably by the time you're listening to this today, uh, which is Tuesday, um, 6 p.m.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: on ESPN.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: So we have a primetime slot.
- 55:01SPEAKER_03: Uh, this will be a big time game to see where this team is at.
- 55:05SPEAKER_03: And we've had a pretty much a week, six days since uh the Providence game to clean up a lot of different mistakes that we made.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I don't I don't think Tennessee is likely to switch to a 2-3 defense.
- 55:18SPEAKER_03: I think that's more of a uh Providence, you know, big East type of thing.
- 55:21SPEAKER_03: They they tend to play an old school style of basketball, which it worked for them, you know.
- 55:25SPEAKER_03: Credit to them.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: But um Tennessee, uh, they beat North Carolina, they beat Colorado.
- 55:31SPEAKER_03: Uh they have lost their, I believe six and one on the season, uh, losing to Villanova by almost 20.
- 55:37SPEAKER_03: Villanova's a great team.
- 55:39SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I'm not saying that means much.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, and it's an early season game.
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: So, but this is a really good Tennessee team.
- 55:47SPEAKER_03: Uh, the SEC itself is very good.
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: So getting a win here would be massive for Mark Adams and the program.
- 55:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they definitely we definitely need a staple win here in the season since it's been nothing but pretty much cupcakes.
- 55:58SPEAKER_05: You know, there hasn't been one really to hang our hat on yet.
- 56:00SPEAKER_05: And doing it on primetime TV in the the biggest basketball stage in in all of the country would be pretty awesome.
- 56:06SPEAKER_05: So let's get out there and do it.
- 56:08SPEAKER_05: We've done it before, and uh, I feel pretty good, man.
- 56:11SPEAKER_05: I definitely definitely not counting this team out whatsoever.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: I think we're gonna win tomorrow.
- 56:15SPEAKER_05: Let's go get it.
- 56:16SPEAKER_03: Think of it as this is just one less Big 12 game you need to win.
- 56:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, because the Big 12 is a gauntlet, as we've seen so far this year.
- 56:26SPEAKER_03: Iowa State is looking like a completely turned around program.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: Uh TJ Ottelburner is doing a great job over there.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: They are undefeated.
- 56:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, Iowa State might be back to what they've been.
- 56:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, even Kansas State has improved.
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, UT is UT, Kansas is Kansas.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: Like it's, you know, this is a really, really, really, really good conference.
- 56:48SPEAKER_03: And if we can get this win against a ranked Tennessee team, that's just another resume booster and another game in the Big 12 that we can afford to lose.
- 56:57SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying you go out and just you know take it easy on a Big 12 game because you beat Tennessee, but this is something that will boost the resume for March.
- 57:06SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 57:06SPEAKER_05: I mean, we we still have high those high expectations for March.
- 57:09SPEAKER_05: So it all begins here.
- 57:10SPEAKER_05: This is where it really gets going.
- 57:11SPEAKER_05: This is where the rubber meets the road.
- 57:12SPEAKER_05: So we've proven we can beat the lesser competition.
- 57:14SPEAKER_05: Can we beat the better competition?
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: Let's find out.
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: Let's go get them.
- 57:17SPEAKER_03: Let's do it.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: Let's do it.
- 57:20SPEAKER_03: Oh man, let's get it, please.
- 57:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, this is gonna be a fun game.
- 57:24SPEAKER_03: I'm excited for it.
- 57:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then we got Gonzaga here on the 16th of December.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: So another, another huge game.
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: But um, man, I think that's all we had uh for the most part.
- 57:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, gotta shout out the volleyball team.
- 57:36SPEAKER_03: They did lose uh in the first round of the NCAA tournament um to Florida Gulf Coast.
- 57:42SPEAKER_03: Uh heartbreaker, you know, we won the first two sets and then we dropped the next three to eventually lose the match.
- 57:48SPEAKER_03: So uh, but shout out Tony Graystone and uh the volleyball team because uh great season, first time back in the NCAA tournament in 2020 years.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: That's that's great.
- 57:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, one step out of time.
- 58:00SPEAKER_05: This is great improvement.
- 58:00SPEAKER_05: Let's just now we got next season to look forward to.
- 58:03SPEAKER_05: Yep, no doubt.
- 58:04SPEAKER_05: So, all right, man, let's end it off.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: Song of the week.
- 58:07SPEAKER_05: All right, so the song of the week.
- 58:09SPEAKER_05: You know what?
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: I am going to do a Lubbock squad or at least a squad out of a Lubbock.
- 58:15SPEAKER_05: I am doing Grady Spencer and the work tech alums here, who have a nice jazzy country brand of music.
- 58:22SPEAKER_05: And I'm going to do their song, Celebrate, off of their album, Celebrate.
- 58:28SPEAKER_05: Just good jazzy country vibes.
- 58:30SPEAKER_05: I like this guy's uh he's got a nice silky voice, and they just have a smooth sound.
- 58:35SPEAKER_05: So I'm I'm throwing those out there for y'all.
- 58:36SPEAKER_05: I'm going with Celebrate by Grady Spencer and the work.
- 58:41SPEAKER_06: Timing is shorter, don't make me wait.
- 58:44SPEAKER_06: Drop the whole 30 lead seats on cake.
- 58:47SPEAKER_06: Baby, don't worry, that sounds a great.
- 58:53SPEAKER_03: Very nice, very nice.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: I'll check that one out.
- 58:56SPEAKER_05: Um, and I'm hoping to be celebrating here in a bit, if you know what I mean, with uh Mr.
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: Quinn Ewers committing to Texas University, and maybe a Tennessee basketball win.
- 59:07SPEAKER_05: Maybe a Tennessee basketball win.
- 59:08SPEAKER_05: It's let's get both, let's celebrate both, and uh we'll do an emergency pod.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: Please.
- 59:13SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, that would be tremendous.
- 59:15SPEAKER_03: Um, my song of the week, if you follow the pod on Twitter.
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: Um, I wouldn't got last-minute Chris Stapleton tickets, um, kind of offered by uh my fiancé's uh firm.
- 59:29SPEAKER_03: They just kind of you know, we get these free tickets every once in a while, and brag about it.
- 59:33SPEAKER_03: I don't mean to brag about it.
- 59:34SPEAKER_03: You're bragging about it.
- 59:36SPEAKER_03: Um, no, we had last-minute tickets to go see Chris Stapleton in Mississippi.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: Uh two-hour drive from us.
- 59:42SPEAKER_03: We were like, hell yeah, let's go do it.
- 59:44SPEAKER_03: Um, and so we drove up on Saturday.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: We got the tickets on Friday, drove up on Saturday.
- 59:49SPEAKER_03: Where'd you go?
- 59:50SPEAKER_03: Biloxi.
- 59:52SPEAKER_03: Biloxi, okay, Mississippi.
- 59:54SPEAKER_03: Uh cool town, actually.
- 59:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a cool music town so far, from what I've heard.
- 59:59SPEAKER_03: Definitely some good restaurants.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_03: We got some good brunch the next day.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: It was good times, but um, no, Chris, I mean, I cannot stress enough that Chris Stapleton is tremendous in in concert.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: He really is.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, the dude sounds as good to better than he does on his studio albums, and he really doesn't fake anything about his concerts.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, um, it's all about the music with him, and it's all about his band, and it's all about, you know, there's nothing super flashy about it, but he really brings it.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm not gonna give you a Chris Stapleton song here, uh, but I would recommend you go to one of his concerts.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_03: It's absolutely worth the money.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_03: Um, but I'm gonna do one of the people that opened up uh for Chris Stapleton, both of which were fantastic.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_03: Um, he had a band, uh the Marcus King band opened up for him.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_03: Uh great, kind of folky, rocky, jazzy.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, they had a bunch of different elements to them.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, and the and the lead guitarist could absolutely shred it.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_03: So shout out to them.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_03: But my song of the week is going to be from the other opener, which is Yola, uh, more of a soul, jazzy kind of singer to her.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, absolute pipes, just fantastic artists, um, all around.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: I really enjoyed.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_03: She only played about five or six songs, but I really enjoyed all of them.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, my song of the week by her is going to be Starlight by Yola.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_03: It is um an absolute banger.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_03: I can't I can't tell you enough how much and how well she performed in front of a group of people.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_03: She engaged with the crowd and everything like that.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_03: I was really happy with all the performers here.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_05: So jealous.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Yola's insane.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_05: It's it's crazy that you got to see just two incredible vocalists in Chris Stapleton and YOLO, just both insanely naturally talented with their voices.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_05: So very jealous and great picks.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_03: If Chris Stapleton's ever in town, guys, it's absolutely worth the money.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_03: He's fantastic.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_03: But I think that's where we're gonna end it here on the podcast this week.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_03: Kind of a little longer episode for y'all.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, we're gonna end it off with some plugs, like we always do.

- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but I also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_00: I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: This is incredible.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_02: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
