- 1:07Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Hello everyone and greetings from me.
- 1:10I'm Donna Jordan, your remarkable world commentary person for the month of
- 1:20June. This is my first biweekly podcast for June and I hope that everybody is doing fine.
- 1:29And I'm just so happy that June is finally here so that we could enjoy some wonderful,
- 1:38wonderful weather. So what's on my mind for this month?
- 1:44What am I most interested in talking about or sharing with you?
- 1:50For the month of June.
- 1:53And it's all about this.
- 1:56Who is being left behind.
- 1:59And I really do not think that this is a topic that is new or that is strange to
- 2:07anyone who is in the land of advocacy.
- 2:12I don't. I think it's a topic that we continue to talk about.
- 2:17It's a topic or a subject that we continue to mull over,
- 2:21and we're constantly trying to find solutions to these challenges and these problems.
- 2:31So who's being left behind?
- 2:33In my opinion, seniors.
- 2:38Let's look at why seniors have often been left behind,
- 2:43especially so when technology comes into play.
- 2:48And, you know, most companies, most entities honestly believe that they are
- 2:54using technology to forge ahead to increase their customer base,
- 3:00to increase their revenues because they feel that this is the right thing to do.
- 3:07What they fail to realize, and I apologize if someone thinks that this
- 3:13is a facetious statement to make is that seniors are not always ready,
- 3:20able and willing to grapple with rapidly changing technology.
- 3:28A lot of them can't even afford to have the technical pieces needed,
- 3:33i.e. devices, computers with up to date software.
- 3:37So they are being left behind, and it is becoming more and more of a fight
- 3:44to get companies to understand this.
- 3:48After all, seniors are our bread and butter consumers.
- 3:54But a lot of people don't realize this or fail to understand or simply ignore.
- 4:02Okay? Or avoid the whole subject altogether.
- 4:08Persons with disabilities is yet another group.
- 4:11How many times have I personally advocated for companies to really sit down with persons
- 4:19with disabilities to understand why.
- 4:21Why they feel that they are being left behind or being left out.
- 4:28Because a lot of the apps that are being developed these days do not contain
- 4:34accessibility features, and persons with disabilities still need to
- 4:39depend on a sighted person or a person with more expertise to help them out.
- 4:46That means that they are being left out and being left behind.
- 4:50Okay, but technically, challenge is yet another group.
- 4:55And who are the technically challenged?
- 4:57The technically challenged are those who did not grow up with technology,
- 5:02who are still struggling to use technology to be able to keep up.
- 5:10Inaccessible apps really play a part in both seniors and technically disabled and persons
- 5:19with disabilities. Not being able to keep up.
- 5:22They're being left behind.
- 5:24They're there being left out.
- 5:26And I know that apps are becoming more and more the way of the world to interact,
- 5:34to purchase, to, to seek information, to do all kinds of things.
- 5:39And it's great, but these groups are being left out.
- 5:46Okay. When inaccessible websites exist and if there's not a good enough reason,
- 5:53and I don't think there is a good enough reason for an inaccessible website,
- 5:59it means, again, that seniors, persons with disabilities and the technically
- 6:04challenged are being left out and are being left behind.
- 6:11That is my rant for today.
- 6:14Okay. This is what I truly believe, and I hope that someone listening is going to
- 6:21give me some feedback.
- 6:23Write to me at Donna jordan@gmail.com.
- 6:27That's majodhan@gmail.com.
- 6:34Okay, I look forward to hearing from you.
- 6:38Now, I always promise myself that every month I'll do my best to highlight a story that
- 6:48becomes very stressful for anyone who gets into such a circumstance.
- 6:57And for this month, we're going to talk about when someone loses a home.
- 7:02Okay, it's very stressful for someone to lose her home,
- 7:07whether it's through financial circumstances or an in-fight with the family,
- 7:15or an in-fight with friends or an in-fight with somebody.
- 7:20Losing a home is not an easy thing.
- 7:24It is one of the most stressful circumstances that anyone could ever hope not to get into.
- 7:33Your home is your dynasty.
- 7:37Your home is where you reside.
- 7:39Your home is where you think, where you do, where you feel.
- 7:45And when you lose that home after whether it's just a few years or many years of living
- 7:52there, it is very stressful.
- 7:55So this is one of the stories I just wanted to highlight for this month.
- 7:59Losing a home. I'm Donna J.
- 8:04Jordan, and I do thank you for listening to me for the month of June.
- 8:09My first episode. All right.
- 8:12Being left out. And you have a great week and I'll talk to you again soon.
- 8:19Bye for now.
- 8:23Podcast Commentator: Donna wants to hear from you and invites you to write to her at donnajodhan@gmail.com.
