Transcript
- 0:07Good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon.
- 0:10On a Tuesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network back out of
- 0:14talking Iowa based programming for the next 5 hours and thank
- 0:17you for starting your afternoon here with Trent Condon and
- 0:20myself. We'll take you until 2:00 and
- 0:22turn things over at that time to the drive with Heather and of
- 0:26course, Lucas. Did I hear you singing this
- 0:28before the show began? I.
- 0:29Was pounded and out on the desk. I thought so.
- 0:33I thought, what? I've popped into the other
- 0:34studio. I thought I heard that over
- 0:35there. So yeah, we took it a step
- 0:37further for you and get that little ear worm going for you
- 0:39here. Today I'm very glad.
- 0:40I'm glad I got to see Elton John at the the Red Piano Tour, I
- 0:44think it was called. It's Caesars in Las Vegas few
- 0:47years before that wrapped up. Anyways, here's what's coming up
- 0:50with us. Dane Mazzutani covers, well, it
- 0:52covers the Vikings. He's their beat writer.
- 0:54But when the Vikings aren't in the headlines, he pinch hits
- 0:58covering the Minnesota Timberwolves and they host game
- 1:02one of their series tonight with Golden State.
- 1:04That's an 830 ish tip and we'll talk to Dane Mazatani about
- 1:08that. We'll do some Vikings the latest
- 1:10on them as well. And that comes up here about the
- 1:13the bottom of the hour. Hour number two.
- 1:15We missed Alec Bussey yesterday as he was moving, but today he's
- 1:19going to join us. Man oh man, has he ever been
- 1:21pumping out the content at cyclonealert.com?
- 1:24I'm kind of glad we missed him yesterday because there's a lot
- 1:27to discuss here today with all of the content he put out.
- 1:30Football related, some basketball stuff as well.
- 1:32But Bussy kicks off the second hour of our program and then
- 1:36we'll talk to our friend Bill Bender, cover sports at the
- 1:39Sporting News. We'll talk to Bill Bender about
- 1:42a variety of topics. We'll do that at 1:30.
- 1:44Turn things over to Trent for his plays of the day.
- 1:47Circus sports sponsor those. I just thinking back to
- 1:49yesterday, I know you swept both NBA games.
- 1:52Did you have a good day yesterday?
- 1:54The best day that I could have. Did you sweep?
- 1:57Did you? Were you?
- 1:58Perfecto, we hit the board. How about that?
- 2:00I don't know, start to the week just.
- 2:02Another perfect day in the life of betting on sports for our
- 2:05French rank college. They're a rarity, there is no
- 2:08doubt, but it's good to get off to that good start and to do it
- 2:10in that kind of fashion where I saw this.
- 2:13If you would have bet the dogs in the first three-game ones
- 2:15we've seen in the NBA about 70 to 1 money line for the three of
- 2:19them, you would have parlayed those three together.
- 2:22You'd be sitting pretty right now.
- 2:24I'll put those ones together. So Indiana and then the two from
- 2:26last night. And there were long stretches of
- 2:29both the NBA games last night. I'm dead.
- 2:32Yeah, there. There's no way, certainly.
- 2:34The Knicks. Yes, there's no way getting
- 2:36basically double digits in both games.
- 2:38I'm going to get a cover, not only get a cover.
- 2:40Got a win 2 outright victories right win yeah absolutely you
- 2:44took the points and you both easy covers than that one you
- 2:47know what I'll I'll say this about the NBA last night they
- 2:50needed. That.
- 2:52The NHL has been just kicking the crap out of them as far as
- 2:55intrigue and I know this is just fan speaking so keep that in
- 2:58mind. What I'm about to say NHL, Who's
- 3:01the first round opposed to the first round of the NBA?
- 3:04It wasn't even close in my opinion for the drama.
- 3:08Were you looking at my notes? Because right at the top of my
- 3:10notes I have the exact same thing.
- 3:12Really. The NBA?
- 3:13This is the jump start, maybe, hopefully.
- 3:16That. Yep, they needed starting with
- 3:19All right Sunday. No Pacers calves.
- 3:22Oh, we get an upset, a little bit of intrigue.
- 3:25We're general sports fans learning about both of these
- 3:28teams a little bit more, right? There's something, but we're not
- 3:31going to get anything Monday night.
- 3:32Wouldn't think so, but both big favourites.
- 3:34I mean, the Celtics are playing for crying out loud.
- 3:36Yeah, the rest versus the rest part of it.
- 3:38And what happens? Boom, you get one.
- 3:40Seed versus one seed. It adds intrigue to the series
- 3:43because I think with all of those series, you can make a
- 3:47pretty strong argument that it felt like we're looking at maybe
- 3:494142 at best. With those now, I think the
- 3:53equation changes and I think this will allow, again, the
- 3:56casual fan we know, NBA fans, you're in.
- 4:00Yep. It's not about that.
- 4:01It's about that next year. And for most of us here in the
- 4:03state of Iowa, we're in that tier.
- 4:05Basketball, I mean college sports, the the big two are
- 4:09behind us. Wrestling and women's
- 4:11basketball, you know, aside they matter.
- 4:14But but men's basketball, football obviously not playing
- 4:17in these months. And now this is the jump start
- 4:20and I'm right there with you. I thought it was incredible last
- 4:22night. I want to start with something
- 4:25with you that you mentioned to me off the air before we came
- 4:28on. I don't remember what it was.
- 4:30OKC down the stretch. Yeah, what were they doing?
- 4:33Extending the game. What's the rush to foul?
- 4:36I mean, honestly, Trent. I didn't get it.
- 4:39I didn't understand it. I couldn't wrap my mind around
- 4:41it. That's something.
- 4:42Now again, same thing. We don't watch the NBA as much.
- 4:45Maybe this is more normal happenstance.
- 4:47Can't. Be.
- 4:48But with 18 seconds, you're starting to stretch out the game
- 4:52at that point. And not that you're five, you
- 4:54don't want him to hit three. That it's A1 point game, get it
- 4:59back to three. I hated it, absolutely hated it
- 5:01at the time and. Then Holmgren's clanking too.
- 5:04Free, yeah. And not just to miss one and
- 5:06then to get a three on the other end.
- 5:08And as he's hoisting, I'm like, go to the rib.
- 5:10No, no, no, he had other plans Swish.
- 5:14And then you know what that when they inbounded the ball with two
- 5:16point was it Williams that took the that took the full court.
- 5:18He for the most part, the ball was pretty close.
- 5:21I mean, he hit backboard. I'm not saying, you know, it
- 5:25would have been an unbelievable finish, but that would have
- 5:28added to the night, especially if you didn't have a rooting
- 5:30interest in the game. I mean, I just want these series
- 5:33to keep going, right. Well, OK, enough of the enough
- 5:36of the dogs. Let's get a favorite home
- 5:37tonight, the T Wolves, they'll be hosting Golden State.
- 5:40Man, oh, man, the opinions of these NBA playoffs pursuant to
- 5:45the nearest team to us in the NBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves
- 5:49had zero chance to beat the Lakers.
- 5:52LeBron, it's Luca, and we saw what happened.
- 5:55Now the country seemingly has, I don't want to say Timber,
- 5:59Timberwolf Fever, T Wolf Fever, but you can't find too many
- 6:02people that are picking Golden State to win this series.
- 6:04Trent. Coming back the other way and I
- 6:07kind of hearing the same kind of thing, right?
- 6:09You get that kind of tepid feeling.
- 6:12Why doesn't anybody want the Warriors, right?
- 6:14Yes, we understand they're not deep, they're veteran.
- 6:18Yep. Well, it's still the Warriors.
- 6:21We have seen this even in recent history when they've been called
- 6:26no chance and they've been able to do it.
- 6:28So I'm with you. I I'm surprised at the narrative
- 6:32as we talked about yesterday with the betting line in this
- 6:34series. I was surprised by that.
- 6:36I thought it'd be a little bit tighter, but tighter.
- 6:38But maybe it's just as simple as you beat a public team like the
- 6:41Lakers, a lot more people start to jump on that band wiping too.
- 6:45It is strange though, I mean, Lebron's no longer in the
- 6:47playoffs. We just turned the calendar to
- 6:50May and he's he's done. It's I mean, get used to it,
- 6:53right? Not getting any younger and be
- 6:5441 next year. We'll see where it goes.
- 6:56Not trying to, you know, push him, put him out the pasture by
- 6:59any means, but it's just odd that that he's not around.
- 7:02Well, we'll see what happens to tonight.
- 7:04Look forward to catching up with Moussutani.
- 7:07How big of a factor is Gobert in this series?
- 7:09Is he as big a factor tonight as he was against the Lakers?
- 7:11Are these are the Warriors and the Lakers built similarly when
- 7:17it comes to the the five spot on the floor?
- 7:21It's Draymond and he's such an incredible defensive player.
- 7:25For a guy that is what, 6-8? To be able to defend the level
- 7:29that he does, to be able to defensively switch everything.
- 7:32And he's so good defensively, Trent.
- 7:34He can. Do you want to go pick and roll?
- 7:37Do you remember him in college? Yeah.
- 7:39Was he that good in college? Yes, on that end of the floor.
- 7:43Oh, absolutely. Was he?
- 7:44But it was also, well, he played for Izzle, of course.
- 7:46Right? Right.
- 7:46Right. But I mean, was he as dominant
- 7:48though? No, I mean, you wouldn't think
- 7:51of him as that. You knew he was a tremendous
- 7:52defensive player and great defensive team, but you wouldn't
- 7:55think that this is going to translate because 6-8 guys
- 7:58playing center don't translate, right?
- 8:00It hasn't happened. In the Big 10.
- 8:02This is not a what he did, Coles, back in the day.
- 8:06Who's the Celtics guy? It starts with Cowan.
- 8:09Cowan. Yeah.
- 8:10That's not who this is. That that's not that doesn't
- 8:13happen. That was 50 years ago.
- 8:15No, it wasn't. Yes, it was. 50 years ago,
- 8:19that's not what this is, yet Draymond's able to do that.
- 8:22So to expect that yet his ability to do those kind of
- 8:25things and Gobert, he was tremendous last time out.
- 8:29But you and I, we know that that guy can be a disappearing act
- 8:35and things can go poorly and he can get stupid fouls and all of
- 8:37a sudden he is out of the game and he becomes very negligible.
- 8:40I I'm concerned about Draymond with that part of what he is as
- 8:45a player and how smart he is and coming down the lane.
- 8:48But secondly, this is still Anthony Edwards team and Ant
- 8:55loves to talk. Oh boy, Draymond loves to talk.
- 8:59Yes indeed. And as good as Ant is, and he is
- 9:02elite at so many things, who has the advantage in the crack
- 9:06talking? Yeah, I mean, there's this guy's
- 9:08on a whole different. Level who do?
- 9:09You think the NBA wants to see Kamara?
- 9:11They won't have influence. I think the Warriors.
- 9:13Do you still think because this Curry.
- 9:16And I still think that because. The Sands is running out of the
- 9:19hourglass. Ant's time is still ahead of
- 9:22him. He's I mean, he's starting to
- 9:25become one of the faces of this league.
- 9:26I think, you know, for, for so many reasons.
- 9:29I mean, you stick a microphone in front of him and I think he's
- 9:32getting better. The cuss words in the middle of
- 9:34his sentences this year, Seemingly they're down.
- 9:36Going back a little. Bit 'cause.
- 9:39They they have been exited completely though, right?
- 9:41No, no, no. Periodically they'll pop up, but
- 9:45such a great player he really is.
- 9:46Naz Reid's going to be a factor in this series, I think tonight.
- 9:49He has been all year long Randall Oscar, I can't wait for
- 9:54this game tonight. I can't wait for this game
- 9:56tonight, 8:30-ish for the tip in that one.
- 10:00So we'll get to that. Then we'll talk to Dane
- 10:02Moussatani about it get, you know, get his feel for the game
- 10:05tonight. Cleveland is a the Cleveland,
- 10:08Indiana game. If you're if you're if you're
- 10:10wanting to bet on this game numbers going down.
- 10:13And I think it's going down based on on one reason only and
- 10:16that's availability because at the morning shoot around,
- 10:21Mitchell was not there. I don't think Garland
- 10:25participated this morning. The calves are banged up, Trent.
- 10:28So that's the reason. The numbers going the other way.
- 10:31We'll see if that continues. But man oh man, Can you imagine
- 10:35Indiana jumping out before they get home to A2?
- 10:37Nothing lead. Is it crazy to think that?
- 10:40Well, we just saw it what, a year ago in the opening round
- 10:42with the Timberwolves and the Nuggets, right?
- 10:44And. 6/6. Apparently the road teams 66
- 10:48that's crazy. The road teams won every game of
- 10:50that series. So it can happen and it's
- 10:53happened semi recently, but where am I going to be laying?
- 10:56Well, we'll find out a little later.
- 10:57Indeed, And you're hot. Joe joins the program.
- 11:00Hi, Joe, How are you? Hey, good afternoon.
- 11:03I want to weigh in on the Thunder debacle.
- 11:05As an actual Thunder fan, you're the one in the market that
- 11:10Dagenault over coached last. Night, did he OK?
- 11:14Shay Gil, just Alexander, he was going to, he was going to
- 11:16challenge a foul and SGA went up to McGraw and said don't
- 11:20challenge us. I did foul Yokich.
- 11:22He went ahead and challenged it anyways.
- 11:24And towards the end there, yeah. I.
- 11:26Imagine the the the training, the foul shots makes zero sense
- 11:29because OK, you make the Nuggets shoot too.
- 11:31Guess what they're going to make you shoot to, It's going to come
- 11:34down to who missed, to Chet missed.
- 11:36OK, Worst case scenario. Worst case scenario, they tie
- 11:39it. You play for the last shot of
- 11:41the game, Guess what, you go to overtime, Jokic doesn't have a
- 11:45foul to get. Yeah, and where's, where's the
- 11:48Thunder really going to excel this tournament?
- 11:51They're bench. They're bench deeper than any
- 11:53team in the NBA. Jokic fouls out.
- 11:56Even Hartenstein and Holger had five fouls.
- 11:58They didn't have fouls to give either.
- 11:59But they can survive against the team without them too when the
- 12:03other team loses a guy like Jokic.
- 12:05Joe that that was a great point too.
- 12:07This team built on Westbrook. Had five too.
- 12:10Did he? He did, yeah.
- 12:12That team that doesn't have the depth that you do, you go to
- 12:14overtime, you go to overtime at home on top of it.
- 12:16If you give up that 3 point shot, so be it.
- 12:19But I, I think that's something I hadn't even come across
- 12:22normally, huh? You, you give up a lead like
- 12:24that, it's devastating. You're deeper, you're younger,
- 12:28you're at home. I just don't see it as a big of
- 12:30a deal and well. In a in a play for the last shot
- 12:33they they tie it OK, play for the last shot.
- 12:35You could get an off ball foul. Guess what you're going to the
- 12:37line. I mean, it's Jagan all over
- 12:41coached. It's uncharacteristic for him,
- 12:42but yeah, he, he, he over coached that who do.
- 12:44You fear most in the West, Joe. I oh 100% the T wolves T wolves
- 12:49have played them a tough. They have they split I think or
- 12:52they were, they were close games.
- 12:54They did split. I just wish the Thunder.
- 12:56I just wish, I just wish the Thunder could go and play
- 12:58nothing but East teams in the playoffs.
- 13:01Yeah, I think everybody in the West loves.
- 13:02That Joe, thanks for calling. Appreciate the appreciate you
- 13:05reaching out to call anytime. That's KC fan.
- 13:09Yeah, I gotta be the one in the market right there can't be a
- 13:11ton. Could be a fuse.
- 13:13Maybe they jumped aboard, I mean.
- 13:14Back in the back in the Big Three era.
- 13:16Well, and when that was coming together again, we also got to
- 13:19think of those formative years, right?
- 13:21And Nope, Joe, maybe he's in his 20s and all of a sudden that was
- 13:24the team when he was 8910 older he did.
- 13:27But I'm gonna guess there's more than one in the market.
- 13:30Probably so. Well, there's one that we know
- 13:31of and it's Joe and I'm glad that he called in about his
- 13:33squad. And look, I, I expect both teams
- 13:36that got beat last night to even the series.
- 13:38I do. I'm not saying it's a reverse
- 13:40gentleman sweep. I mean, although the, the, the
- 13:43Celtics could be, I mean, Trent, how do you miss 45 threes in the
- 13:46game? Because you take that many
- 13:47threes in the game, that's still that's what they do 60 threes,
- 13:5360 that's the Celtics are not a very enjoyable watch.
- 13:57Now, of course, when they're missing shots on top of it makes
- 13:59it even less enjoyable. I don't like that brand of
- 14:03basketball. I I this is old band yelling at
- 14:05Cloud. I get it.
- 14:06It's. Not, you know, I think there's a
- 14:07lot of people like you. It just is not around and around
- 14:11and here's the screen and then pop and the ball movement's
- 14:15good. OK, But maybe this is also
- 14:18reason I just don't love the NBA and I don't it's it's all levels
- 14:21of basketball. We're still everybody's evolving
- 14:23to the point where it's about the three-point shot either at
- 14:26the rim or behind the arc. That's what you do at almost
- 14:29every level of basketball. 60 but bright when you get to this.
- 14:33Jesus, what fun is that, right? I get it, a three is worth more
- 14:37than two. I completely understand all the
- 14:40math behind it and everything that goes there.
- 14:43It just isn't the beautiful game of basketball that I certainly
- 14:47remember. All right, here's what I want to
- 14:48go next. Stay in with basketball, but
- 14:49moving to the college game pursuant to a big 10 school
- 14:52hosting Iowa State. And did we know this because
- 14:55Purdue put out their non conference schedule on X today.
- 14:59And I'm looking through it just, you know, see what who see who
- 15:01they're playing. Are they playing anybody tough
- 15:03And they're I'm just I want to say December the 6th.
- 15:06I don't have exactly I should find it, but I think it's
- 15:09December the 6th. Purdue's playing Iowa State and
- 15:13Mackie. Did we know that?
- 15:16So you asked me before the show. I don't think so.
- 15:18And then, and I don't know, you know how memories can work.
- 15:21Then I was like, maybe we did know that regardless.
- 15:23That's a great game. Kudo.
- 15:25That's Cyhawk week too. It usually is.
- 15:28Let me let me get my December calendar for me.
- 15:30See how it matches up. Because that's usually the
- 15:32Thursday. Now they have moved it around a
- 15:34little bit, but it's usually that Thursday, the second
- 15:38Thursday, oh. My God, you know what December
- 15:406th is? What are they doing?
- 15:42Come on, what? Iowa State's going to be playing
- 15:45for a football Big 12 championship, for crying out
- 15:48loud. Well, that'll be at 11.
- 15:49Put this game middle afternoon, maybe a night but.
- 15:51It's not the only championship game of the day, Trent.
- 15:54That's OK. I was playing at night.
- 15:56Well, here's the thing, you can have multiple devices.
- 15:59You can watch a multitude of ways.
- 16:01We could even get you out of the house.
- 16:02You know, there's these sports. Bars, There's those things.
- 16:04That have all the games on, we could you get you out of the
- 16:07basement, We could do that on a Saturday.
- 16:09Night. That is such a great game.
- 16:12Purdue, I don't know if they deserve to be, but you're seeing
- 16:16a lot of pre season #1 per new Boilermakers.
- 16:19I'm not sure I'd buy it. I bet them every year.
- 16:22But and you know what happens to it?
- 16:24Never go ahead, never get close to cashing.
- 16:27That's. Too bad.
- 16:28So is it the first or second Thursday of every year?
- 16:32That is the second, the session. So that'd be the 11th this year.
- 16:36So that'd be pushed back a little bit because there was the
- 16:39year a couple years ago where Iowa got their game against Duke
- 16:42in Chicago. Is that where that game was?
- 16:44I don't. Recall, I know they played Duke,
- 16:46yes, right around side. Didn't they have three games?
- 16:48They did. They played.
- 16:50I, I got it here. They played Duke on Tuesday the
- 16:526th. Yeah.
- 16:54Iowa State two days later. Yep.
- 16:56Then a Big 10 game. Maybe they had a Big 10 game
- 16:58against Wisconsin after that, right?
- 17:00And they how many years? Two or three.
- 17:02That was two years ago. The 2020 two 23 season 2 years
- 17:06back No. I like it.
- 17:10I love that it's it's a great game.
- 17:11It'll be a great test for both schools.
- 17:13It will be because, you know, I think Iowa State's got it for
- 17:16sure. A top 20 team, maybe a top 15
- 17:18team. That's probably where they'll
- 17:20start in the preseason, somewhere in that neighborhood
- 17:24against the number one preseason, number one team.
- 17:28December the 6th. It's a Saturday, and maybe it's
- 17:32up against the ACC because, well, Belichick will be
- 17:35coaching. Yeah, he's going to be coaching
- 17:38something else, I think at that point.
- 17:40Where will the where is it going to end?
- 17:42Look forward to talking to Bill Bender about that and other
- 17:44stuff. Speaking of Iowa State in the
- 17:45Big 12, you saw Brett your mark today.
- 17:48And his contract? Extended through 2030.
- 17:51I didn't find it interesting looking at the release and
- 17:54looking at some of the the news that came out of it that he was
- 17:59given an original five year contract but there was an opt
- 18:03out after two years. On his part or on the league's?
- 18:06Part on the league's part. That because he did things so
- 18:09differently, because come from a background maybe?
- 18:12This is not Bob. That's good.
- 18:15Kudos. Kudos.
- 18:16Yes to the big 12A. For taking a chance, but B,
- 18:20putting a safety net in there if it didn't work, and obviously it
- 18:23did work. Because who is the idiot for the
- 18:25PAC 12? Larry.
- 18:27Scott, Larry Scott. Do you remember what his
- 18:29background was? No, it was in sport, but he was
- 18:33like the commissioner of like the tennis tour, Yeah, like the
- 18:36APT or something like that, and it didn't work very well.
- 18:39No, well, I mean, look where his league is.
- 18:41And if there was an opt out a couple years in, because those
- 18:45murmurs were starting pretty early in his tenure, that maybe
- 18:49this guy wasn't cut out for this.
- 18:52Your remark, obviously it's worked out incredibly well.
- 18:54Forward thinking understands business, understands the
- 18:57business and is finding revenue streams in places that college
- 19:02the links had not really looked in so.
- 19:03Although he made a mistake this summer, moving the Big 12 media
- 19:06days away from. Vegas he did.
- 19:08I think that's selfish on our. Part well it is but it but you
- 19:11you can 500 people there last year.
- 19:14We'll just use that number. 500 media members covering his leak
- 19:18in Las Vegas. How many are going to Frisco, TX
- 19:21of that 500 half. It'll, well, it'll depend on how
- 19:24many Texas people come because we talked to also, I talked
- 19:26couple, couple of Texas base places that normally send a
- 19:30whole crew of 10/12/15 people and they send one or two.
- 19:33So it'll come, it'll go both ways, but I get where you're
- 19:35going. No, I don't think of.
- 19:36I mean, and the Big 10, to their credit, swooped right in.
- 19:38Absolutely. No wonder we'll take it.
- 19:40Your mark, though, what he has done, absolutely, really
- 19:43incredible job what he's done and the Big 12 also very, you
- 19:46know what? Kind of flies under the under
- 19:48the radar a little bit that, you know, because we've we've we've
- 19:51been impressed by the work that he's done that the football
- 19:56combine instead of, you know, scouts going to every outpost in
- 20:00the Big 12. They bring them all together.
- 20:02I think in Frisco too, right, I think it is, but that works or
- 20:06seemingly that I, I, I think that that's probably in best
- 20:10interest of the student athletes because every team's going to be
- 20:13there as opposed to, you know, spread out all over the Big 12
- 20:17footprint. So I think that's that's been a
- 20:18nice. A feather in his cap as well
- 20:20that maybe he doesn't get the credit that it deserves anyways.
- 20:24One more college football note I wonder I'm past do you saw Joel
- 20:27Clack came out with his post spring time you.
- 20:30Know what I did, And I listened to a good part of it.
- 20:33It was a long dissertation, but you know what?
- 20:35I think he's kind of hitting the right notes, right?
- 20:38Well, I always got a quarterback.
- 20:41On the local front, absolutely. Yeah.
- 20:43On the local front, I truly believe that both these teams
- 20:46are deserving a preseason top 25, even at at the fringe level.
- 20:51If they're not, you don't want to have one or the other in the
- 20:53top 25. They still need to be in the
- 20:55consideration. Iowa, you would have told me
- 21:00back in January when they finish up that game against Missouri.
- 21:03No way, no chance. I thought they were going to be
- 21:06there because of the schedule. They take on what three teams
- 21:10that were in the College Football Playoff, they go to
- 21:13Iowa State and earlier don't play Michigan and Ohio State.
- 21:16This is still an incredibly daunting schedule and I didn't
- 21:19think they were going to get there.
- 21:20But I do wonder about the new blood.
- 21:22You know, last year, the disappointment defensively, the
- 21:24step back that they took. Now they're still 11th in the
- 21:26country and scoring defense. That's a step back for them,
- 21:29Still top 20 in yardage per game and that's a step back for them.
- 21:34But getting that new blood there, if that's going to be
- 21:36something. But you said the biggest thing,
- 21:37they've got a quarterback. They have a quarterback.
- 21:40He is a guy that can sling it, that can make plays, and he's a
- 21:44real leader. I believe that he is This is not
- 21:47it's not Kate McNamara. He was fake.
- 21:49Yep. And the appearances got duped by
- 21:52it. Yep, but they weren't alone No,
- 21:54but now I know he's got duped by it.
- 21:56Absolutely. There is a real leader there
- 21:59that is not just about the fault false bravado.
- 22:02There's also substance behind it and it can be a big difference
- 22:05maker will the. Offense carry the defense this
- 22:08year in some extent. Yeah, I think they're going to
- 22:10have to win some games, you know, 3027, there's going to
- 22:14have to be probably two of those kind of the way I.
- 22:16Would can win if they make a special teams play then they
- 22:18normally did if they. Are going to have like a nine
- 22:21and three type of season, not another seven and five, a nine
- 22:24and three, even 10 and two type of season.
- 22:26Yeah, they're going and then they can't win everyone 1413 and
- 22:29certainly today's environment, you can't do that.
- 22:32Absolutely. I think if it's going to happen
- 22:34it's going to have to be the offense a couple of times
- 22:35carrying. And how many of those have we
- 22:37seen? I mean, outside of the Ohio
- 22:39State game, 5524, the big upsets, that's not how it
- 22:44happened. It was every single time.
- 22:47Defense special teams. Kick, return a kick, yes, 50
- 22:51something yard. Without a doubt, that's how they
- 22:54win games. We'll see how it goes.
- 22:55All right, we'll take a time out 1225.
- 22:58We're going to be joined by Dave Mazzutani for you're an NBA fan.

- 23:34Mazatani next. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 23:37Network. Miller, Condon Welcome back just
- 23:47past 1230 on a Tuesday. Let's head north of the Twin
- 23:50Cities. Dane mazatanitwincities.com
- 23:53Saint Paul Pioneer Press beat writer for the Vikings, but to
- 23:57moonlights covers the Timberwolves, etcetera in the
- 24:00playoffs and that's indeed where they are.
- 24:03Dane Trenton can again, thank you for what you do for us.
- 24:06We really appreciate the relationship.
- 24:08So let's let's start with this Timberwolves team and my gosh,
- 24:12Trent and I were talking about this earlier in the show, how
- 24:15their narrative has changed or how they can't beat the Lakers,
- 24:18you can't beat LeBron and Luca. And now all of a sudden I can't
- 24:21find anybody picking Golden State to win this series.
- 24:24Boy, it sure changed, hasn't it? Yeah, it does.
- 24:27It's pretty crazy how the rhetoric and the narrative can
- 24:30change. And what has it been two weeks
- 24:33since since they were supposed to lose to the Lakers in five?
- 24:35And now I think everyone's picking the Timberwolves in 5-6
- 24:38or seven. So it's expectation.
- 24:40It's hard now. I think you have to deal with
- 24:43that. I think it does help that this
- 24:45team, it's not the young Timber pucks anymore.
- 24:49This team went to the Western Conference finals last year and
- 24:52everyone's singing their praises and then bang, they're done in
- 24:55five against the Dallas Mavericks.
- 24:56I think having something like that happened to you on a big
- 25:01stage does kind of prepare you for this moment now where you're
- 25:04the team to beat. You are who they Vegas is
- 25:07picking or whoever all the analysts are picking.
- 25:10They weren't in that position until they were last year and
- 25:13then they didn't handle it well. I presume that they will handle
- 25:17it a little better this time around, but that's still Steph
- 25:19Curry, Draymond Green, Jimmy Butler on the other end.
- 25:21So we're going to have to earn it.
- 25:23You mentioned Draymond and for me, and maybe this is just my
- 25:26fan cap being on a little too tight here, but boy, he's
- 25:29bothersome. I know I'm going to be swearing
- 25:31at my television a lot here during these seven game series
- 25:35at him, but against this team, still learning, still going
- 25:39through it and and a guy that also likes to go right back at
- 25:42it and a little jawing. Do you have any concern about
- 25:45that or is that just me being too fanboy here?
- 25:48I think it's it's a valid concern because at times this
- 25:53season and kind of go down the rabbit hole with me at times
- 25:56this season, the Timberwolves have shown they can be an
- 25:59immature team. So Raymond's antics, love him or
- 26:03hate him, they are designed to to elicit a reaction out of a
- 26:07team. And if they can get under, if he
- 26:09can get under the Timberwolves skin and get them off their
- 26:12game, then he's doing his job. I know people don't love it,
- 26:16don't love how he's officiated. Think he he kind of goes by a
- 26:19separate set of rules and maybe some of the other guys in the
- 26:22league with how he can get after guys and get after officials.
- 26:26But he's been doing this for 10-15 years now and he's won
- 26:30some championships doing it and he's certainly more.
- 26:33I do want to give Draymond credit because I'm, I'm actually
- 26:35a Draymond fan. I think he's more than just
- 26:38advantage. He's a tremendous basketball
- 26:40player. He unlocks everything for that
- 26:42team offensively and defensively.
- 26:44But yes, getting up there in age with him, I think part of his
- 26:48game now is being the agitator, being the guy who the teammates
- 26:52can galvanized and then rally around and simultaneously get
- 26:56the other team off their game. So the Wolves have to respond in
- 27:00a positive way. They can't go down that rabbit
- 27:03hole with him. They have to just kind of push
- 27:05back, fight back. Anthony Edwards, to your point,
- 27:08Francis has done a good job. It's shown he's capable of that.
- 27:12He's not afraid of anybody. But you don't want to get in a
- 27:15kind of tit for tat with Draymond.
- 27:17I just want to let your game do the talking.
- 27:19And I think the Wolves have proven they can do that against
- 27:22LeBron and Luca, the different beasts, kind of going against
- 27:26Steph, Draymond and Jimmy just in in the way the roster is
- 27:29constructed. But yeah, I think Draymond will
- 27:31try his best to get get a rise out of the Timberwolves.
- 27:35But we'll see if they take the bait.
- 27:37Amongst the many things that impressed me in the Lakers
- 27:39series was the balanced scoring. 5 games, 4-4 different guys led
- 27:45the team on any given night. McDaniels, Randall Edwards and
- 27:48Gobert wasn't the same guy every night.
- 27:51And that's what that's what you really I think got a tip your
- 27:55cap to at this time of year. For sure I think so and like the
- 27:59team will go as Anthony Edwards goes, but I think it is
- 28:02important, like you said, that they have guys that on any given
- 28:06night it can be theirs. And I think Rudy Gobert put it
- 28:08best after his performance in Game 5 where he went 20 and 20.
- 28:11I think he accidents with a 27.24 rebound.
- 28:15Incredible performance and Rudy Gobert had that performance in
- 28:19Game 5 after not closing in Games 3 or 4, after not being on
- 28:23the floor when it really mattered in Games 3 or 4.
- 28:26And asked about that after the game, Rudy Gobert said kind of
- 28:29what you just said. And it's just like, this is who
- 28:32we are. We have 8 starters on the team
- 28:34and that is our advantage. And I think it's partially
- 28:39Anthony Edwards being a connector.
- 28:40I think it's partially Chris Finch establishing a culture,
- 28:44but if it's not your time tonight and you have to sit on
- 28:47the bench, that doesn't really seem to bother anybody.
- 28:50And I think that is a secret weapon for this team is not only
- 28:53are they deep, not only can they hit you in a bunch of different
- 28:56angles from a bunch of different ways, but if it's not going a
- 29:00certain player's way on that night, they're not going to be
- 29:03the one to kind of screw up the vibe.
- 29:05They'll just sit back and wait till it's their turn.
- 29:07And if they can ride that, that's something I don't think a
- 29:10lot of teams in the NBA have right now.
- 29:13We saw Rudy Gobert obviously in the clinching game, how big of a
- 29:16factor that he was? Undersized Warriors team, they
- 29:19don't have a whole lot of depth, but you just, it feels like
- 29:22you'd never know with Gobert. Do you think this is going to be
- 29:24a good series for him? Are we going to look back and
- 29:26say they just couldn't play him because he couldn't figure out
- 29:28Draymond? How does this go for Gobert?
- 29:31I think it's going to be kind of like the Laker series where he's
- 29:35going to be good defensively whenever he's on the floor.
- 29:38And I think everyone, he just kind of Harkins back to that
- 29:43shot that Luca hit over him last year in game two against The
- 29:46Mavericks. And they take that and they
- 29:49conflate it and say he can't play defense well.
- 29:51If you really go down and look at the metrics, when Rudy Gobert
- 29:54was on the floor, the Lakers had a hard time scoring against him.
- 29:57So I think no matter what against the Golden State
- 29:59Warriors, who's going to look good or going to have a good
- 30:02defensive impact on the game, whether people and the
- 30:06perception say so or not. Where I think it will be kind of
- 30:09hit or miss is on the offense event.
- 30:11I don't think he's going to go 2020 every night nominate, even
- 30:14though he's 71. But I think there are some
- 30:17nights where he's going to be a force down there and then they
- 30:21don't have anyone who can kind of bang with them.
- 30:23And I think there are some nights where we talked about
- 30:25Draymond's antics. They might get in Rude Eagle
- 30:27Bear's head and and and then he could unravel that way.
- 30:30So I think it'll be a hot and cold series for him.
- 30:33But I think if you watch the Houston series and Golden State
- 30:37and how the Warriors struggled against the double big lineup
- 30:41with Alfred Sangoon and Steven Adams, Rudy Gobert, on paper the
- 30:47dominant this series, they they don't have anyone for him.
- 30:50You should live above the rim on the glass.
- 30:52You should live down low, Whoever's guarding him.
- 30:56So after you've performed the way you did in game five, I
- 31:00think it's fair for people to expect a lot of you heading into
- 31:03Game 1. So I that's the expectation
- 31:05tonight. You're bigger than everyone on
- 31:07the floor. Play like you're 71.
- 31:09We know what we're going to get from you on defense.
- 31:11Bring a little more on offense. I expect them to be pretty good
- 31:15tonight. We'll see if if if the antics if
- 31:17the antics of Draymond Green wear on him over time, though.
- 31:20When when you look back at the at the huge offseason trade with
- 31:25Cat and, and Randall, obviously even Devincenzo coming over from
- 31:28the Knicks at the time, I thought, boy, oh boy, it's it
- 31:31looks like the Knicks are going to win this thing.
- 31:33And we saw what what Cat did during the season, during the
- 31:36season just finishing. Think he finishes the runner up
- 31:40most rebounds. I I think that if there is such
- 31:44a thing as both teams won, this might be one of those trades.
- 31:47Do you see it that way, Dave? I do.
- 31:50I do. And I think no matter what
- 31:53happened in the immediate aftermath, people were going to
- 31:56hate the trade because Karl Anthony Towns was was a fan
- 32:00favorite. He was someone who people
- 32:03appreciated for the way he carried himself and really dug
- 32:06the Timberwolves out from some pretty dark days and then did it
- 32:10amid some pretty dark days himself.
- 32:12And, and really as as Timberwolves were starting to
- 32:15come into his own, he was starting to come into his own.
- 32:17And last year felt like the pinnacle.
- 32:19And then Bam, right before training camp is traded.
- 32:22So people were never going to like that trade because he
- 32:24traded who a lot of people consider the face of the
- 32:27franchise. And then you couple that with
- 32:29Julius Rando, whose game does not really die with the way the
- 32:32Timberwolves played, or at least wasn't going to right away.
- 32:36That was always going to be kind of a hard fit.
- 32:38And I think as time has progressed, you've seen kind of
- 32:42the vision of Tim Time. Look at it now, Julius Randle
- 32:44fit seamlessly into the team. It took some time, but he has
- 32:49kind of the skill set to take over.
- 32:51If Ant needs a blow or he can facilitate the offensive, Ant
- 32:55still wants to dominate. I mean, you look at a guy like
- 32:57Dante D Vicenzo did not shoot well the other day but or the
- 33:01other series. But he does all the little
- 33:02things that you need in the playoffs, you know, this time of
- 33:06the year. So I think when you kind of look
- 33:08at a 2 for one trade like that where the Knicks get a guy who
- 33:13has done everything they've asked of him and he performed
- 33:15last night in the big moment, even if he struggled at times.
- 33:18But the Wolves kind of deep in their roster, they add two
- 33:21players to the price of 1. I think you're right, win, win.
- 33:25It would be certainly something. They're they're on a collision
- 33:27course for the final. If a couple couple more things
- 33:30can happen, certainly work to be done on both ends, but man, that
- 33:34would be something. No doubt in stories that'd be
- 33:37good for people like you, Dave, certainly writing those stories.
- 33:39We would like that. No doubt over to your main beat
- 33:42the Minnesota Vikings. So I saw ESPN came out with
- 33:45their power rankings and there was a bunch of personalities, 80
- 33:48people all together rank the teams one through 32.
- 33:52I personally was anticipating the Vikings to be middle of the
- 33:55and three season but we know nothing about their quarterback.
- 33:58They were at #9 I was shocked to see them as a top ten team.
- 34:03So what am I missing? Am I just this off on JJ
- 34:06McCarthy? I I.
- 34:08Think the. Analysts and you know, when you
- 34:11get together 80 some people like you said, and and you kind of
- 34:16look at this offseason as a whole, I think what probably is
- 34:20weighing out is just how darn good the team is around him.
- 34:24And you don't need top ten quarterback play from JJ
- 34:27McCarthy for the Vikings to be a top ten team.
- 34:30You just need average quarterback play and anything
- 34:33above average quarterback play, shoot, they could be a top six.
- 34:38Who knows, because I think the roster is primed and ready to go
- 34:42both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
- 34:45And I really, I look at this team and I don't see a lot of
- 34:48weaknesses. Maybe cornerback, but I think
- 34:52that they'll probably do something to address that from a
- 34:55depth perspective and and they believe in the guys they have in
- 34:58their room. But everywhere else on the
- 35:00roster, from the offensive line, which they completely rebuilt,
- 35:04to the offensive playmakers, which I always joke, I think we
- 35:07forget Justin Jefferson's the best receiver in the league
- 35:10because he just doesn't run his mouth like it.
- 35:12You know, the defensive players that they've added both this
- 35:15offseason and last season, like all they need out of JJ McCarthy
- 35:19is for him to be average. And they will be great.
- 35:22And I think that's what probably the analysts are banking on now.
- 35:26Look, there is a world probably that exists.
- 35:28I I don't think it will happen because I, I tend to think that
- 35:32JJ McCarthy, what we've seen, what we've heard that he's going
- 35:36to hit the ground running. But if he does struggle, well,
- 35:39yeah, then it doesn't really matter how good you are on on
- 35:42either side of the ball if your quarterback can't get it done.
- 35:45But if he is, who the the Vikings?
- 35:48Think he is? Who a lot of coaches, past and
- 35:51present, think he is. I think the Vikings will be
- 35:54right there at this season. The only thing is, man, look at
- 35:57that schedule. I know we don't have it yet and
- 35:59we don't have the full schedule, but we know the opponents.
- 36:02It's going to be a gauntlet every week for them.
- 36:04Do you expect them to head across?
- 36:05The Pond I do. I think so.
- 36:08I know you just breathe the tea leaves.
- 36:11You see, Pittsburgh's a rumor. I don't know for sure.
- 36:15So I don't want to, you know, fan those flames.
- 36:18But that would not surprise me. But we'll see.
- 36:21I think it we're becoming or we're getting to a point where
- 36:25it feels like every team is going to play across some point
- 36:28during this. Season.
- 36:30Well, I just. I heard TJ Hawkinson and Chris
- 36:32Long on a podcast yesterday. Listen to Hawkinson just rave
- 36:37about the in arm strength that JJ McCarthy has and reminding
- 36:40people that he caught passes early in his career for Matthew
- 36:42Stafford and Stafford's got nothing on McCarthy.
- 36:45We'll see where it goes. Dane, as always, thank you for
- 36:48doing this. Appreciate it.
- 36:49And we'll talk to you down the road. twincities.com, Saint Paul
- 36:52Pioneer Press for our friend Dane Mazatani.
- 36:54Dane, thank you. Have a great day anytime guys.
- 36:57Thank. You take care.
- 36:58Good. To talk to you.
- 36:59So we catch up on the goings on up north of the four teams, it
- 37:03seems the Twins are the furthest away now from a championship.
- 37:07Yeah, yeah. Who's closest?
- 37:12The Timberwolves, I think. So too.
- 37:14Who's next? I think.
- 37:21Vikings, you would know better than me on the.
- 37:24Hockey front How close are the Wild?
- 37:25Well, they're close, but that. Division.
- 37:28The stars, The lanch here would be my jets.
- 37:31Here's my push back again, not knowing hockey.
- 37:33Yeah, we see fluky teams seemingly get out of right.
- 37:35You're right. And.
- 37:36That doesn't happen in the NFL. Do we see fluky teams win a
- 37:40Super Bowl? No.
- 37:42No. You see bad quarterback play,
- 37:44but elite defense, right? Or something.
- 37:47They're missing something, but they've got something that's
- 37:49head and shoulders above anybody else in the league and.
- 37:53The teams that have made deep runs in the NFL playoffs, they
- 37:56still have something. They still have something that
- 37:58you can point and say, OK, and there's a reason behind it.
- 38:00And hockey happens all the time. We see eight seats beat once.
- 38:03We almost saw it again, you know, 1.8 seconds.
- 38:06The kids won, I think their first.
- 38:07Cup and that was about 10 years ago.
- 38:09They were an eighth seed. It happens so that.
- 38:12Would be my argument on the hockey side.
- 38:14And I'd still put the pleasants of Vikings.
- 38:16Yeah, yeah. I am a man in my mid. 40s and I
- 38:20have never seen them play in a Super Bowl.
- 38:22Trent. You know what, stranger?
- 38:23Things can happen. I experienced it Sunday.
- 38:26We'll take a time out. We'll come back.
- 38:28Finish up the hour, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 38:31Network. All right, Miller and Condon
- 38:35welcome back. Final couple of minutes.
- 38:37Hour number one hour #2 Iowa State conversation.
- 38:41We'll start with Alec Bussey, cyclonealert.com, part of 24/7
- 38:45Sports, cyclonealert.com for Bussy, Bill Bender on college
- 38:49sports, etcetera. He joins us at the bottom of the
- 38:52hour. Trent, we'll make some picks.
- 38:53So the article Scott Dockerman advised us of yesterday on Iowa
- 38:58State in where the program is at as to where it used to be and
- 39:02it's published at The Athletic. I've read the first a couple of
- 39:05paragraphs in it. Then my phone rang and I forgot
- 39:08to go back and read. But you could tell that's going
- 39:11to I think it's going to be a very well received piece by by
- 39:16Cyclone fans pretty good. It's a pretty good read and same
- 39:20thing. I haven't got it through the
- 39:21whole thing yet. You know, It's what you and I
- 39:24talk about being in this state for as long as we have because I
- 39:30know so many young people out there, they don't get it.
- 39:34And though there were, and it's sometimes it paints this picture
- 39:37of what it was and it's more football than anything.
- 39:41That football program of the 80s and into the 90s?
- 39:43It was a joke. And we know how important.
- 39:47Football is financially to an athletic department to just
- 39:51start pulling them out of the muck that they were coming out
- 39:54of the Kreiner and the Walden days and getting it back to the
- 39:58level that McCartney, there needs to be multiple statues of
- 40:01him. No, I agree.
- 40:02The job that he did. Both entrances.
- 40:06It's unthinkable. That's how bad Iowa State
- 40:09football was. And with it, if you don't have
- 40:12football, it's hard to have an athletic department.
- 40:13Without a doubt, unless. You're in the Big East playing
- 40:16basketball only and even then, Hour 2 coming up, we'll talk to
- 40:20Bossy Moore on Iowa State, Bill Bender coming up, Miller and
- 40:23Condon. One more hour to go on our
- 40:24program. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 40:26Network.
