Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, home of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: modern white tail hunter and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to the wire to Hunt podcast. I'm your guest
- 0:17Speaker 1: host Tony Peterson, and today I'm speaking with white tail
- 0:21Speaker 1: killer Tyler Jones. All right, folks, welcome to the Wire
- 0:40Speaker 1: to Hunt podcast, which is brought to you by First Light.
- 0:42Speaker 1: You might notice that this is not the voice of
- 0:44Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. He sent me a text last week saying
- 0:47Speaker 1: something like, I'm gonna go get some botox so I
- 0:49Speaker 1: don't have to use so many filters on my TikTok's
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna be honest here. I don't even know what
- 0:53Speaker 1: that means. I don't know what language he's speaking half
- 0:55Speaker 1: the time, but I just I wish him luck on
- 0:57Speaker 1: that with whatever that means. Today's guest is Tyler Jones.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Tyler is a born and raised Texan who is one
- 1:05Speaker 1: of the most successful public land bow hunters out there.
- 1:08Speaker 1: He's also one of my favorite people in the industry.
- 1:10Speaker 1: He produces a pile of white tail content for his brand,
- 1:14Speaker 1: which is called The Element. From their podcast to their
- 1:17Speaker 1: YouTube videos, Tyler and his partner Casey Smith, are dedicated
- 1:21Speaker 1: to representing hunting as it really is. They show it
- 1:24Speaker 1: as it actually happens out there, and they're really good
- 1:27Speaker 1: at it. In this episode, we cover a bunch of
- 1:30Speaker 1: different topics, ranging from setting realistic hunting standards to embracing
- 1:34Speaker 1: new hunting challenges to really figuring out your own hunting
- 1:37Speaker 1: style so that you'll love the process and every second
- 1:42Speaker 1: of the time yere in the field. The lessons in
- 1:44Speaker 1: this show are good for every month of the deer season,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and they carry right on over to the off season
- 1:50Speaker 1: as well. Tyler, how are you, buddy? I'm doing well, man,
- 1:54Speaker 1: Thanks for having me on. It is always wonderful to
- 1:56Speaker 1: see your face. And I gotta tell you, man, I
- 2:01Speaker 1: don't know. And there isn't no joke here between you
- 2:04Speaker 1: and Casey. Who's your partner in crime? They're over at
- 2:06Speaker 1: the Element. I don't know if there's ten people in
- 2:09Speaker 1: the country the last few years who have who have
- 2:11Speaker 1: put together as impressive of a public land white tail
- 2:16Speaker 1: run as you guys have you? Guys? Are you? It's
- 2:20Speaker 1: it's amazing what you've done. Well, thanks man, I've been
- 2:24Speaker 1: super blassed. Man. I I um, I would work really
- 2:27Speaker 1: hard at it, but um in the end, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 1: there's a lot of things that have to come together
- 2:34Speaker 1: for you to actually kill a deer way back on
- 2:36Speaker 1: public land. So I just feel grateful man, that I've
- 2:40Speaker 1: been able to do it a lot, you know. Yeah, well,
- 2:41Speaker 1: you're being humble because you're you're on a freaking terror
- 2:44Speaker 1: and it is awesome to see. And Casey is not
- 2:48Speaker 1: letting you pull too far ahead because that dude's putting
- 2:50Speaker 1: down some big deer on public too. How many, just
- 2:53Speaker 1: just out of curiosity, how many bucks had you killed
- 2:55Speaker 1: this year? Killed four so far on public um? And
- 3:01Speaker 1: I killed four public in four different states last year
- 3:04Speaker 1: and one uh here at my property where I'm sitting
- 3:07Speaker 1: right now, that was really a big one. I chased
- 3:10Speaker 1: him for a long time, so I had that was
- 3:13Speaker 1: my best season last year, and I did not think
- 3:14Speaker 1: I'd be able to top it. But if a few
- 3:17Speaker 1: things go right from here on out, I may top
- 3:19Speaker 1: this year. Yeah, there's there's still a lot of time left.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And all those bucks were on film too, right, Yeah,
- 3:25Speaker 1: well that's uh, that's the one thing I self filmed
- 3:28Speaker 1: last year a lot, and uh, you know, the actual
- 3:31Speaker 1: kill shots were not always on film, uh, but I
- 3:36Speaker 1: got I was just like Dade. I'm killing this, dear man.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I mean, you know, it just didn't didn't always work
- 3:41Speaker 1: out for me. But yes, there there's all there's films
- 3:44Speaker 1: of all of them, yeah, out there, so the majority
- 3:47Speaker 1: of the footage is on there. That is, uh, I'm
- 3:51Speaker 1: telling you man, it's it's impressive. I mean really, when
- 3:54Speaker 1: you think about what it takes to go, oh, even
- 3:58Speaker 1: in your home state and kill one we'll just call
- 4:01Speaker 1: out a pope and young buck on public land. That's
- 4:04Speaker 1: like a huge accomplishment in any given year. I don't
- 4:07Speaker 1: care even if you live in Iowa. I mean it's
- 4:08Speaker 1: it's not as big in some of these really good states,
- 4:11Speaker 1: but it's still like no joke. And to have you
- 4:13Speaker 1: guys come from Texas and go all over and do
- 4:15Speaker 1: that is it's pretty cool to see. And I know
- 4:18Speaker 1: a part of your secret is this relationship you've got
- 4:22Speaker 1: with Casey. And we were talking about this, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: just before we got on here, about how important it
- 4:29Speaker 1: can be to have somebody you trust to bounce hunting
- 4:32Speaker 1: ideas off of one another. Yes, absolutely, man, like that's
- 4:36Speaker 1: the that is one of the keys man Um and Casey, uh,
- 4:41Speaker 1: you know, I'll let him tell the story whenever he
- 4:43Speaker 1: gets on here at some point. But uh, you know
- 4:46Speaker 1: his dear recently that he killed us really nice, he
- 4:49Speaker 1: would He's on our podcast said the same thing about
- 4:52Speaker 1: me just being somebody that you can trust to just
- 4:55Speaker 1: be in the right spot to help out when you
- 4:58Speaker 1: know you need it. And so you know, that's that's
- 5:01Speaker 1: the thing, man, that like super underrated and something that
- 5:06Speaker 1: we we value tremendously is each other and that, like
- 5:10Speaker 1: you said, somebody that you trust, because I mean there's
- 5:14Speaker 1: I've had a lot of you know, people that I've
- 5:17Speaker 1: dealt with over the years just being doing this and
- 5:20Speaker 1: and whatever else and music, like we've talked about before,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and um, like even people that you kind of get
- 5:27Speaker 1: to know for a little while, um, and you think
- 5:30Speaker 1: you might trust sometimes can fool you, you know, and
- 5:32Speaker 1: so like that's just part of humanity and that you
- 5:34Speaker 1: get let down sometimes, you know. Um. And I mean
- 5:37Speaker 1: I've given I've sent out cameras to lots of people
- 5:39Speaker 1: that I thought we're gonna help me in a state
- 5:41Speaker 1: that's a long ways away because everything is a long
- 5:43Speaker 1: ways from Texas, it feels like, and so and you
- 5:46Speaker 1: end up not getting any pictures, you know, because you
- 5:48Speaker 1: see them trail cameras and you thought you might could
- 5:50Speaker 1: share some info you know, doesn't happen. And it's just like, man,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you know, but Casey is truly just a heart of
- 5:57Speaker 1: gold kind of guy and uh, really brilliant, you know,
- 6:01Speaker 1: like he's very smart. He can come up with a
- 6:04Speaker 1: comeback faster than anybody I know, and he just you know,
- 6:08Speaker 1: he works, his mind works so fast, and he can
- 6:11Speaker 1: scroll through maps. He's as good on the map as
- 6:13Speaker 1: I've ever seen anybody be. I mean, he's just quick.
- 6:16Speaker 1: So it's definitely the of the most value. And I think, uh,
- 6:21Speaker 1: maybe maybe the biggest key factor to my success has
- 6:24Speaker 1: been just be in order to work with him and
- 6:26Speaker 1: pour over maps and think about stuff. You know. Yeah,
- 6:29Speaker 1: and it's it seems I guess it might seem like
- 6:33Speaker 1: kind of kind of simply intuitive to be like, yeah,
- 6:36Speaker 1: having somebody having a hunting partner is a good thing.
- 6:39Speaker 1: But man, you can have you can partner up with somebody,
- 6:41Speaker 1: like you said, who kind of really helps you level up,
- 6:44Speaker 1: or you can part with somebody who actually brings you down.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And you know, I've I realized this recently. I've got
- 6:50Speaker 1: a really good buddy Eric who I hunt with a lot,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and he's really become a good white to a hunter.
- 6:56Speaker 1: There was a long time where you know, he would
- 6:58Speaker 1: make a suggestion. I was like a cool story, right, bro, Like,
- 7:00Speaker 1: We're just gonna do my thing. But he's, you know,
- 7:03Speaker 1: especially in the last seven or eight years, he's really
- 7:05Speaker 1: got obsessed with it and he's gotten good at it,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and it's fun to kind of strategize. And you know,
- 7:12Speaker 1: we're like you in casey would give each other a
- 7:14Speaker 1: lot of ship, but like we we respect each other's
- 7:16Speaker 1: opinions and you know, ideas, and it really kind of
- 7:21Speaker 1: seems like what it takes to have somebody who brings
- 7:23Speaker 1: a lot of value of the table is somebody who's
- 7:25Speaker 1: operating on the same wavelength as you, Like, do you
- 7:27Speaker 1: have somebody who's willing to work like you are and
- 7:31Speaker 1: has the same kind of goals, because if you you know,
- 7:34Speaker 1: if you have a mismatch in that relationship where you're
- 7:36Speaker 1: you know, if you're the kind of guy who thinks
- 7:37Speaker 1: you can kill four big bucks on public land and
- 7:39Speaker 1: you're you're partnering up with somebody who's kind of a
- 7:41Speaker 1: weekend warrior, it's probably not a great match. Yeah, Yeah, No,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and there's definitely you know, there are definitely things in
- 7:48Speaker 1: every relationship that the two individuals are going to have
- 7:51Speaker 1: a differences, you know, like there are things, um, like
- 7:57Speaker 1: we're both I would say we're both pretty tough overall individuals.
- 8:02Speaker 1: That I'm not trying to you know, you and I
- 8:04Speaker 1: are talking you know me so, but the listener may not.
- 8:07Speaker 1: But I'm not trying to say anything awesome about myself.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I'm just saying, Um, I would consider myself pretty tough
- 8:12Speaker 1: and stuff. Slept on a lot of hardwood floors and couches, um,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you know, through and throughout the years and stuff, um,
- 8:19Speaker 1: you know, and it just it just makes you kind
- 8:21Speaker 1: of like you're kind of just kind of calloused too.
- 8:24Speaker 1: It's like, you know, if you have a place to
- 8:27Speaker 1: lay down and stretch out that night, you're happy as
- 8:29Speaker 1: opposed to I need my bed and my pillow, you know.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And so like that's one thing that helps is that
- 8:35Speaker 1: we're both kind of on that level where we really
- 8:36Speaker 1: are pretty simple guys and we don't need like a
- 8:39Speaker 1: ton I think, like at the core, uh as far
- 8:42Speaker 1: as just beliefs and stuff like that go, we are
- 8:45Speaker 1: very closely matched up, which is a big deal. But
- 8:48Speaker 1: I think, like you see a lot of guys maybe
- 8:51Speaker 1: in the industry and stuff I guess that are kind
- 8:53Speaker 1: of influencers or whatever that you know, may start out
- 8:57Speaker 1: together hunting and then all of a sudden, like they
- 9:00Speaker 1: a little fame and they think, um, maybe it's tuning
- 9:02Speaker 1: up part ways or whatever. And I think that, um,
- 9:06Speaker 1: you know a lot of guys will do that for
- 9:08Speaker 1: the sake of man. I just didn't like the way
- 9:10Speaker 1: he hunted, and I think that's um, you know, you
- 9:14Speaker 1: you definitely uh want to try to hunt effectively when
- 9:18Speaker 1: you're out and you're using your own time and stuff.
- 9:21Speaker 1: But you and I talked about this off air earlier,
- 9:23Speaker 1: like your idea is not necessarily the best one in
- 9:26Speaker 1: the world, you know, and there you like if you go,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I know, you go, you know, like to some of
- 9:32Speaker 1: these states and you'll shoot like a nice buck. He
- 9:35Speaker 1: may not even be a poping young buck. Right Well,
- 9:37Speaker 1: somebody out there could have had an idea that afternoon
- 9:40Speaker 1: and gone and done what they did and shot like
- 9:42Speaker 1: a one sixty, you know, because they're they're around when
- 9:45Speaker 1: you're out there, you know, when you're out in Nebraska
- 9:47Speaker 1: or North Dakota or whatever. Like, they're big deer out there, right,
- 9:51Speaker 1: and if you come home without that deer, there was
- 9:54Speaker 1: a plan somewhere that could have killed that deer. Right,
- 9:56Speaker 1: So you're you're not the wisest guy in the woods,
- 9:59Speaker 1: you know. You just if you can keep that in
- 10:01Speaker 1: mind and work in a collaborative way with you know,
- 10:05Speaker 1: with your buddy and you know, like you said, if
- 10:07Speaker 1: he works hard and he tries to get better, to
- 10:10Speaker 1: learn more like your buddy Eric, eventually you're gonna get
- 10:13Speaker 1: on that same wavelength. You're going to be kind of
- 10:16Speaker 1: at the same level of understanding of whitetailed deer, and
- 10:19Speaker 1: then you can really you know, that's when you really
- 10:22Speaker 1: start to mesh and just hammer deer. You know, it's true.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I mean, it started to feel a little personal there
- 10:27Speaker 1: with those examples, but I'm gonna let it slide there,
- 10:29Speaker 1: tyler Um, I know where you hunt sometimes, so like
- 10:36Speaker 1: I do, I do really think that the value of
- 10:40Speaker 1: of pairing up with somebody who's who's of a similar
- 10:43Speaker 1: mindset is so important. And it's also it's also just
- 10:48Speaker 1: really important to be with to to work with somebody
- 10:51Speaker 1: who's like I want to keep getting better, and that's
- 10:55Speaker 1: that's that's a message. I think. I think we haven't
- 10:57Speaker 1: pushed it very well in the hunting industry. And we
- 11:00Speaker 1: do this with a lot of things, right. I see
- 11:02Speaker 1: this with dog training all the time. I see this
- 11:03Speaker 1: with a lot of stuff where it's like we're gonna
- 11:05Speaker 1: give you the answer, but it's not really the answer. Right.
- 11:08Speaker 1: People always want to know, like how do you scout
- 11:10Speaker 1: this place or what kind of sign do you look for?
- 11:12Speaker 1: Like what's the answer? What's the answer? And I'm like
- 11:14Speaker 1: the answers to keep challenging yourself and working hard at
- 11:17Speaker 1: this stuff. Like the best hunters out there are not
- 11:21Speaker 1: the ones who consistently always kill two on certain properties. Right,
- 11:26Speaker 1: Like they they may kill huge bucks and that's awesome,
- 11:29Speaker 1: good for them, but would you consider them the best hunters? Like, No,
- 11:33Speaker 1: the best hunters are out there challenging themselves and trying
- 11:36Speaker 1: to get better, and they're going, you know, I kind
- 11:38Speaker 1: of got this nailed in this state. I'm gonna go
- 11:40Speaker 1: try this state. You know. Like I was just talking
- 11:42Speaker 1: to Clinton Campbell about this because he just got back
- 11:44Speaker 1: from Kansas, and you know, he was trying the whole
- 11:48Speaker 1: shoot him from the ground decoy m type of thing.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And he's like, man, that was no joke. You know,
- 11:54Speaker 1: when you're trying to kill a white till around no
- 11:55Speaker 1: trees during the rut, it's a different thing. But I
- 12:00Speaker 1: I'm ash you. Even though he didn't kill a buck,
- 12:01Speaker 1: he left that hunt a better hunter. And I guarantee
- 12:04Speaker 1: you at some point there's a dead buck out there
- 12:06Speaker 1: in Kansas with his name on it that's gonna be
- 12:08Speaker 1: killed that way, and that's that's how you get better.
- 12:11Speaker 1: And he'll take that home, just like when you guys,
- 12:13Speaker 1: you know, he goes home to p A, you go
- 12:15Speaker 1: home to Texas, those public land hunts where you're really
- 12:18Speaker 1: challenging yourself. You're bringing stuff home that you're gonna carry
- 12:21Speaker 1: with you forever. That's only going to make you better.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And you get two people like that working on the
- 12:25Speaker 1: same wavelength, it is freaking. It's it's a rough time
- 12:29Speaker 1: for the deer usually. Yeah, it is, man, You know
- 12:32Speaker 1: the question I have. My dad has run a fishing lodge.
- 12:37Speaker 1: He was a CPA in Dallas when I was young,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and he decided, um, he did not like the corporate
- 12:42Speaker 1: ladder and the backstabbing and all that, and um, so
- 12:47Speaker 1: he uh moved. He took whatever money he had made
- 12:50Speaker 1: as the c p A and said, I'm gonna start
- 12:51Speaker 1: a fishing lodge. Renovated this place, started fishing lodge back
- 12:54Speaker 1: in nineteen, opened it up, still owns it today. And
- 12:58Speaker 1: so we we were at like Fork in Texas, which
- 13:01Speaker 1: if anybody knows anything about bass fishing, I mean, arguably
- 13:04Speaker 1: the best lake in the world. Um, you know, it's
- 13:07Speaker 1: thirty five or something of the top fifty in Texas,
- 13:10Speaker 1: including the state record, you know, and so really cool
- 13:14Speaker 1: things that I got to see growing up. And Um,
- 13:17Speaker 1: one of the fishing guys that my dad got to
- 13:18Speaker 1: know really well over the years, who's also a really
- 13:20Speaker 1: good bow hunter. He's just an outdoorsman, you know, total outdoorsman,
- 13:24Speaker 1: he always said when it came to fishing. Um, he'd
- 13:28Speaker 1: caught We have a lunker program. It's called, uh, the
- 13:31Speaker 1: Share Lonker program. And you know, if you catch a
- 13:33Speaker 1: bass over thirteen pounds, you get a free replica and
- 13:35Speaker 1: that fish goes and it spawns and they you know,
- 13:38Speaker 1: gain genedics through that. So uh, he caught four that
- 13:42Speaker 1: were over thirteen And I don't think, I don't know
- 13:46Speaker 1: if anybody put more into the program than he has. Um,
- 13:49Speaker 1: and so anyway, he's he fished the classic twice. Just
- 13:53Speaker 1: a heck of a fisherman, you know. And this guy says,
- 13:56Speaker 1: tells my dad one day, He's like, because they started
- 13:58Speaker 1: they that my dad kind of he didn't learn to
- 14:00Speaker 1: hunt really till he was in college. And so Richard
- 14:04Speaker 1: the guide, Um, you know, as I was growing up
- 14:07Speaker 1: really young and stuff, my dad was learning a lot
- 14:09Speaker 1: from him, hunting on leases with him and stuff here
- 14:12Speaker 1: in East Texas. And he used to always say, you
- 14:14Speaker 1: have to ask the question, why why is that fish there?
- 14:17Speaker 1: Why is he on that side of the stump. Is
- 14:19Speaker 1: is it the shady side? Is is it sunny side?
- 14:21Speaker 1: Is the the windy side? Or is the leeward side?
- 14:24Speaker 1: You know, like, what is that fish doing? It's doing
- 14:26Speaker 1: something for a reason. It's the same thing with deer.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Why is that deer there? So if you if you
- 14:32Speaker 1: go sitt in a tree stand, you go, man, I
- 14:33Speaker 1: was so close. Man, I had tons of bucks in there. Today,
- 14:36Speaker 1: I think I'm just gonna go back in there and
- 14:38Speaker 1: try it again, you know, and tomorrow's different conditions. Then
- 14:42Speaker 1: you may just completely have the worst next few days
- 14:46Speaker 1: of your life hunting, you know. I mean because you
- 14:48Speaker 1: didn't ask yourself why why were those bucks all seven
- 14:52Speaker 1: yards from me? And why were they all seven yards
- 14:54Speaker 1: from I saw a bunch of them. It was a
- 14:56Speaker 1: great hunt from a you know, visual standpoint, but I
- 15:00Speaker 1: thank kill one, So why didn't I kill one? You know?
- 15:02Speaker 1: And the question is why? I always think. I always
- 15:04Speaker 1: think back to that. And that's one thing Casey does
- 15:06Speaker 1: really well too, is asked, you know, why is that
- 15:08Speaker 1: deer doing that? He's really good and he's very observant too,
- 15:12Speaker 1: he sees everything in the woods. Yeah, I think I
- 15:14Speaker 1: love that the example of you know, bass fishing and
- 15:19Speaker 1: trying to trying to ask yourself questions because I I
- 15:22Speaker 1: found this with my little girls, what it taking them
- 15:25Speaker 1: hunting and taking them fishing? Has taught me that I
- 15:28Speaker 1: have to explain everything I can't just you know, like
- 15:31Speaker 1: I mean, that sounds like a joke, but it's true. Man.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I get asked fowl thousand questions every hour when we're
- 15:37Speaker 1: doing something, and what it forces me to do is go, okay,
- 15:41Speaker 1: well I have to answer why, Like they're asking me
- 15:43Speaker 1: why did we catch a small off here when we've
- 15:45Speaker 1: never caught one before? Or why like you said, why
- 15:48Speaker 1: did that deer come in that way? Or why didn't
- 15:50Speaker 1: we kill that dear? And I just think that all
- 15:53Speaker 1: of that stuff feeds the machine. The more you're out
- 15:56Speaker 1: there thinking about this stuff, and like it's I want
- 15:59Speaker 1: to be careful here and to not make it sound
- 16:01Speaker 1: like it's like guerrilla warfare against the bass or against
- 16:04Speaker 1: the deer. It's not like you can have a lot
- 16:06Speaker 1: of fun asking why and but you got to know
- 16:09Speaker 1: when you know, we we always look at this and go,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you know, I want to go out and have that
- 16:14Speaker 1: banging day where I catch a ton of spawn in
- 16:16Speaker 1: large mouth and it's a blast and they're not even
- 16:18Speaker 1: thinking about it. If you can flip a jig anywhere
- 16:20Speaker 1: near their bed, you're their toasts, right, that's fun, But
- 16:23Speaker 1: like it's just fun, like you don't you don't learn
- 16:25Speaker 1: probably a ton. It's the same thing if you go
- 16:27Speaker 1: out on a really easy deer hunt. It can be
- 16:29Speaker 1: a hell of a lot of fun to shoot a
- 16:30Speaker 1: gift buck once in a while, but you're not learning
- 16:33Speaker 1: as much. And so it's the times that go wrong
- 16:36Speaker 1: or the times when it's like like you said that
- 16:38Speaker 1: those bucks were at seven yards, they never got closer
- 16:40Speaker 1: and two of them picked me off on the tree.
- 16:41Speaker 1: What's going on here? What? Why did I get this wrong?
- 16:45Speaker 1: Or why did they get it right? And the more
- 16:47Speaker 1: you start questioning that stuff, the more you make fewer
- 16:50Speaker 1: mistakes in the future, and you you just learn like this,
- 16:54Speaker 1: this is just how this stuff goes most of the time.
- 16:56Speaker 1: But I can just like hedge my bets just a
- 16:58Speaker 1: little bit better by trying to figure out the reasons
- 17:02Speaker 1: for nature doing what it does. Yeah, oh absolutely, I
- 17:06Speaker 1: mean and like as you as you do that, um,
- 17:10Speaker 1: it's like or as you get more experienced doing these things,
- 17:13Speaker 1: you have more instances like when you when you first
- 17:16Speaker 1: start out deer hunting, Um, your why is um? Maybe
- 17:22Speaker 1: like as simple in Texas, as we put a corn
- 17:25Speaker 1: feeder out right here, why, Well, because you might not
- 17:29Speaker 1: see any deer if you don't, so and why are
- 17:32Speaker 1: the deer coming here? Well, they're coming to this corn feeder.
- 17:35Speaker 1: It's simple. It's big concept, right and and and so
- 17:38Speaker 1: like you, that's your why when you start out, and
- 17:41Speaker 1: then you get like years and years into this thing.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I mean, I've been hunting deer for almost twenty five years,
- 17:48Speaker 1: you know, and you start to your why may become um,
- 17:53Speaker 1: like something as simple as or or simple as detailed
- 17:57Speaker 1: as um, like why did that dear not smell me
- 18:04Speaker 1: when it seemed like he was down wind? What was
- 18:07Speaker 1: there was something in the lay of the land or
- 18:10Speaker 1: a thermal or something you know that blows my mind
- 18:14Speaker 1: that he didn't smell me? And how did that happen?
- 18:16Speaker 1: Or whatever? You know, or just like it get becomes
- 18:19Speaker 1: really detailed. The wise do a lot of times because
- 18:22Speaker 1: the why of why is there, Like the kind of
- 18:26Speaker 1: what and why of a deer moving from bed to
- 18:28Speaker 1: feed in the evening and feed to bed in the morning.
- 18:31Speaker 1: That's you know, that's a it's something that needs to
- 18:34Speaker 1: be learned, but like at that point it's so ingrained
- 18:36Speaker 1: in your head. It's like a it's like a cornerback
- 18:40Speaker 1: in the league learning to feather or whatever. I mean,
- 18:43Speaker 1: he just does it. You know, it's just it's nothing
- 18:45Speaker 1: so um, you know, your your your why becomes so
- 18:49Speaker 1: detailed that I don't know, like to me, it's it's
- 18:53Speaker 1: it's like, uh, like you said, it's not necessarily that
- 18:57Speaker 1: you're doing this guerrilla warfare thing. It's like you almost
- 19:00Speaker 1: are like a scientist. You're it's like biology, you know,
- 19:03Speaker 1: you're learning about deer and why they do things and
- 19:05Speaker 1: how they behave and what parts of their body you
- 19:07Speaker 1: need to be aiming for when you shoot. You know,
- 19:10Speaker 1: is he gonna duck? Is he not? Like all these things,
- 19:12Speaker 1: And it almost seems like if you take it to
- 19:15Speaker 1: that level that you you never will lose the fun
- 19:19Speaker 1: in deer hunting because you've always got something even more
- 19:23Speaker 1: detailed that you can break into and trying to figure out.
- 19:25Speaker 1: You know, it's really cool. You know, we we present
- 19:40Speaker 1: public land I know you guys do and I do too,
- 19:43Speaker 1: as like the Ultimate Bull Hunting Challenge right, like part
- 19:45Speaker 1: of its sales speak. Part of it's true, like it's
- 19:47Speaker 1: it's tough, but we want people to think it's super
- 19:50Speaker 1: super hard because it makes us look better. Like there's
- 19:52Speaker 1: a reason we we we frame it the way we do, right.
- 19:55Speaker 1: But the secret that I love about it is it
- 20:00Speaker 1: takes me to places where I have to ask why so?
- 20:03Speaker 1: And And I'm not knocking this, like I don't care
- 20:05Speaker 1: how people want to hunt, but like I've got a
- 20:07Speaker 1: property over in Wisconsin that has a food plot on it.
- 20:10Speaker 1: If I go there and sit on that food plot,
- 20:13Speaker 1: They're like, there's not a lot of why, you know,
- 20:15Speaker 1: Like I don't have to ask a lot of questions.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I'm like, they want to come here to this clover
- 20:19Speaker 1: and they walk by and we can shoot them. But
- 20:21Speaker 1: when you go on a new place, you have to
- 20:23Speaker 1: ask why about everything. And I think about this, like
- 20:25Speaker 1: I'll give you an example. So the property that I
- 20:29Speaker 1: hunted in Wisconsin this year for our one Week in
- 20:31Speaker 1: November series, uh is a property my buddy bought this
- 20:36Speaker 1: past spring. There's ninety acres. It's a beautiful property. It's
- 20:38Speaker 1: so cool, but we've never hunted there before, so we
- 20:41Speaker 1: had only turkey hunted it. And we scouted it, set
- 20:44Speaker 1: up stands and you know, this is this is Mississippi
- 20:48Speaker 1: River bluff stuff like this is my I grew up
- 20:51Speaker 1: hunting this. Like I'm like, I got this, don't worry abouddy.
- 20:54Speaker 1: But we start hunting it and the dear movement so
- 20:59Speaker 1: many times was not what I expected. Like I had
- 21:02Speaker 1: I had rut funnels, I had rut pinch points. I
- 21:05Speaker 1: was like, brother, I am this is where this happens,
- 21:07Speaker 1: Like there will be a dead buck here. And I
- 21:11Speaker 1: just was amazed at how wrong I got it. Like
- 21:14Speaker 1: I was I was close a lot of times. And
- 21:16Speaker 1: how I killed my buck was like really close to
- 21:19Speaker 1: how I called it, but quite a bit different. And
- 21:23Speaker 1: you know, and I'm sitting there and going, why why
- 21:26Speaker 1: did that buck peel off of that hill and cut
- 21:28Speaker 1: through here this way? When I was like, I would
- 21:30Speaker 1: have bet you money he's coming through this way, or
- 21:32Speaker 1: he's coming through that way, or I would have bet
- 21:34Speaker 1: you money that all the deer movement comes from this
- 21:36Speaker 1: side of the farm to that side of the the farm.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And I got so much of that wrong. And I
- 21:39Speaker 1: love it because it makes me go why, like not
- 21:42Speaker 1: only why are they doing that? But why did I
- 21:44Speaker 1: think this? Like why did why did we get this
- 21:46Speaker 1: stuff wrong? Yeah? Yeah, man, that's in you right, like
- 21:51Speaker 1: the adventure um that you kind of get when you
- 21:55Speaker 1: go to a new place. Just kind of like the
- 21:59Speaker 1: reason the Eason people love a interest so much because
- 22:01Speaker 1: it kind of is all inspiring, Like you see something
- 22:03Speaker 1: you haven't seen and you learn something new and you
- 22:07Speaker 1: think that's really cool, you know. And the thing is
- 22:10Speaker 1: man um and my dad tells this story and go
- 22:13Speaker 1: back to fishing here for a second. He um, he
- 22:16Speaker 1: had some some family come in that uh they lived
- 22:19Speaker 1: up north, you know, whatever, and they came in to
- 22:22Speaker 1: Lake four world famous bass fishing, and he's like they
- 22:24Speaker 1: wanted to go catch big try to catch big bass, right,
- 22:27Speaker 1: And so him in like three or four other family
- 22:30Speaker 1: members go out in this boat and you know, it's
- 22:32Speaker 1: kind of packed, it's a bass boat, and um, they're
- 22:35Speaker 1: fishing and you know, Lake spring or whatever. He catches
- 22:38Speaker 1: like a you know, six pounder and like he basically
- 22:45Speaker 1: reels it in, unhooks it and throws it back in
- 22:47Speaker 1: like one fell slop. And they're like mouths open, like,
- 22:51Speaker 1: oh my god, that's the biggest bass we've ever seen
- 22:54Speaker 1: in our lives, you know. And my dad's like, you know,
- 22:56Speaker 1: I catched several six pounders you know a year, you know,
- 22:59Speaker 1: at that point in life. I mean he's you know,
- 23:01Speaker 1: trying to catch double digits, you know. And so it
- 23:04Speaker 1: kind of is um you're thinking about, like if your
- 23:07Speaker 1: circumstances um are similar from day to day and month
- 23:11Speaker 1: to month, year to year, you start to kind of
- 23:13Speaker 1: lose this appreciation for you know, like the the the
- 23:17Speaker 1: the glitter and the lamb kind of fades, right and
- 23:20Speaker 1: you start to go, you know, it's like, um, for
- 23:24Speaker 1: us here if we see in in East Texas, if
- 23:27Speaker 1: we see a public land buck that is like legal,
- 23:31Speaker 1: which means thirteen inches wide or wider. Um, Like, it's like, oh,
- 23:36Speaker 1: this is incredible, Like, man, we gotta get on this dear,
- 23:39Speaker 1: you know. And what he is is that he's a
- 23:40Speaker 1: hundred and five inch eight point you know, and you're
- 23:42Speaker 1: like freaking out, thinking this is awesome. And if that
- 23:46Speaker 1: same year, which also, by the way, weighs a hundred
- 23:49Speaker 1: forty pounds, if that same year, you know, it was
- 23:52Speaker 1: in Iowa, they would be thinking what is wrong with
- 23:54Speaker 1: this emaciated you know creature here? You know. And so
- 23:58Speaker 1: it's kind of one of those things where, like the
- 24:00Speaker 1: the moving around and having that adventure, it brings some
- 24:04Speaker 1: kind of all into you. And it also continues to
- 24:07Speaker 1: just make you ask why, like you said, because you've
- 24:10Speaker 1: never seen that before. You've never seen it happen that way,
- 24:13Speaker 1: and so you know it, Uh, it helps you to
- 24:16Speaker 1: learn more and to uh kind of spread those ideologies
- 24:20Speaker 1: across in different states and use it differently in different ways,
- 24:24Speaker 1: you know, and um hopefully become a better hunter because
- 24:29Speaker 1: um it's uh my dad always says it's fun to
- 24:33Speaker 1: go deer hunting, but it's also fun to shoot dear,
- 24:35Speaker 1: you know, and so it's it's really fun to shoot here.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So you know, like pulling the trigger, that's the that's
- 24:41Speaker 1: the pinnacle. You know. People say I don't have to
- 24:44Speaker 1: pull a trigger to be happy, and that's I feel
- 24:46Speaker 1: the same way. But dude, I don't sit there and
- 24:49Speaker 1: shake like violently the rest of the hunt, you know
- 24:52Speaker 1: what I mean, Like I shake violently after I've shot
- 24:54Speaker 1: a deer, you know, So that's what's the most fun. Yeah. There,
- 24:58Speaker 1: We've we've kind of we like to distill stuff down
- 25:02Speaker 1: to easy explanations, right, And I just love being out there,
- 25:06Speaker 1: you know, like, well, yeah, that's like or whatever percentage
- 25:11Speaker 1: of it. There's a lot going on there, Like there's
- 25:13Speaker 1: more to it. And I come I've come to that
- 25:15Speaker 1: realization with myself where I'm like, man, I just like
- 25:19Speaker 1: shooting deer, Like I just I'm not gonna apologize for it.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Like it's a it's a thing that I want to
- 25:24Speaker 1: do four or five, six, seven times a year, and
- 25:27Speaker 1: I love it. And I want to back up a
- 25:30Speaker 1: second door and and ask you a question. So when
- 25:33Speaker 1: you bring up this example of you know, seeing a
- 25:36Speaker 1: seeing a barely legal Buck down there in Texas on
- 25:38Speaker 1: public land, you kind of compare it to Iowa. Do
- 25:40Speaker 1: you worry? Because I wonder if you have the same
- 25:43Speaker 1: worries I do. So when you guys are filming on
- 25:45Speaker 1: public land, it's impossible. And this happens with our social
- 25:49Speaker 1: media too, it's impossible not to kind of run a
- 25:52Speaker 1: highlight reel, right like you just you just nobody wants
- 25:55Speaker 1: to see the seven hours you sat there and didn't
- 25:57Speaker 1: see anything, and you you know, like you're like, I
- 25:59Speaker 1: want to go home, right, So you you added the
- 26:02Speaker 1: stuff down to the highlights. And when it comes to
- 26:05Speaker 1: guys like you, you and Casey, the highlight reel the
- 26:10Speaker 1: last couple of years is amazing. And so people see
- 26:12Speaker 1: that and are you just worried? Like people are gonna
- 26:16Speaker 1: look at that and go that's that's what to expect
- 26:20Speaker 1: out there, Like are you are you worried about the
- 26:22Speaker 1: stuff that's left on the cutting room floor? Because I
- 26:24Speaker 1: I fight with that all the time. Yes, I fought
- 26:27Speaker 1: with it too, man Like, um, so two years ago
- 26:31Speaker 1: I killed my first Texas public plan buck and twenty
- 26:35Speaker 1: nineteen and so um, I actually, um everything went right
- 26:42Speaker 1: and I can't I mean, I did some things that
- 26:45Speaker 1: were there were very much right, but it could have
- 26:48Speaker 1: gone wrong too. Um, I mean he was he there
- 26:51Speaker 1: was he had been really close to get my win
- 26:54Speaker 1: when he came in. I mean he did he was
- 26:56Speaker 1: not down wind and but he was working towards my
- 26:59Speaker 1: wind as he got out of his bed and worked up.
- 27:01Speaker 1: But I mean essentially, I'm kind of going into much detail,
- 27:04Speaker 1: but like he gets out of his bed. Uh, and
- 27:07Speaker 1: I basically watched him stand up. I didn't see him
- 27:10Speaker 1: stand up, but I saw him standing where he was bedding,
- 27:12Speaker 1: no doubt in my mind. And um, he's like eighty
- 27:15Speaker 1: yards or maybe ninety yards in per Simmons pretty much,
- 27:20Speaker 1: and he just stands there. I mean, you've probably watched
- 27:22Speaker 1: bucks get out of your bed, and if you haven't,
- 27:24Speaker 1: what they do is like it's like the same as
- 27:27Speaker 1: you like when you wake up from a hard nap,
- 27:29Speaker 1: Like you don't do anything for like twenty minutes. You know,
- 27:32Speaker 1: you just kind of stand there and you're like you
- 27:34Speaker 1: pee and then you you know, just it's some stuff,
- 27:38Speaker 1: you know, and you just stand there and look around
- 27:40Speaker 1: and then finally you get a little more fired up.
- 27:42Speaker 1: And this deer when he went over and did some
- 27:45Speaker 1: scrape type stuff, you know, and anyway, um, like I do,
- 27:49Speaker 1: I got like a lot of footage, a lot of
- 27:51Speaker 1: what they call pre roll of this deer through the
- 27:54Speaker 1: per Simmons doing that kind of stuff, and um, you
- 27:59Speaker 1: know from a eating eighty or nine yards. So so
- 28:01Speaker 1: it's pretty good footage, you know. And I decided to
- 28:04Speaker 1: put a lot of that in there instead of um,
- 28:07Speaker 1: you know outdoor TV at it where you like, you know,
- 28:10Speaker 1: show a quick clip and then the next you know,
- 28:13Speaker 1: five seconds he's coming in and get shot. And I
- 28:16Speaker 1: had a lot of people that surprisingly said that they
- 28:19Speaker 1: really liked that and that I made him feel like
- 28:23Speaker 1: they were in the stand almost, you know, and so um,
- 28:27Speaker 1: we still are battling it though. It's weird because you
- 28:30Speaker 1: would think that after that, I would just go, okay,
- 28:32Speaker 1: well let me just put as much deer footage in
- 28:34Speaker 1: there as possible, you know, and make it like a
- 28:36Speaker 1: real hunt. And at some point, like people still you know,
- 28:39Speaker 1: you can look at YouTube, people don't care to see
- 28:42Speaker 1: those people, um don't care to see small bucks really,
- 28:45Speaker 1: even on public land. A lot of times it's weird,
- 28:48Speaker 1: you know, like we shoot some bucks that I'm proud
- 28:50Speaker 1: of and I've sent I sent you pictures you know,
- 28:52Speaker 1: a deer or whatever that are a hundred and five inches,
- 28:55Speaker 1: But like it's just I don't know, like even hardcore
- 28:59Speaker 1: hunters that can appreciate that. We'll still a lot of
- 29:03Speaker 1: times go watch a one sixty killing on private over over,
- 29:07Speaker 1: you know, something that was worked really hard for. Maybe
- 29:10Speaker 1: that's a much smaller dear and so um, it is
- 29:13Speaker 1: something that I could constantly battle. And actually with our
- 29:15Speaker 1: South Dakota series this this year, I thought, well, we'll
- 29:19Speaker 1: put uh, we'll make this, we'll cut these things up
- 29:22Speaker 1: because there was a lot of US hunting and there
- 29:24Speaker 1: was like it was eight day hunts. It was long,
- 29:27Speaker 1: and I was I was able to make ten videos
- 29:29Speaker 1: that probably averaged about ten minutes, and I thought, this
- 29:32Speaker 1: will be cool, you know, and like people will will
- 29:35Speaker 1: hang in there for ten minutes, surely, you know. And
- 29:37Speaker 1: they didn't really do that great on YouTube. And we
- 29:41Speaker 1: killed three bucks on that trip. We killed yeah, we
- 29:43Speaker 1: killed three you know, good rack bucks on that trip
- 29:45Speaker 1: on that trip, and so um, I don't know, it
- 29:49Speaker 1: was a little bit um. I was a little bit perplexed.
- 29:53Speaker 1: And we released a video somewhere around beginning October as
- 29:57Speaker 1: well of Deer I killed on public and Kansas Lash
- 30:00Speaker 1: year not a huge year, um, and it is like
- 30:04Speaker 1: thirty eight minute video and I mean it's in literally
- 30:08Speaker 1: since October. It's got like a hundred fifty thousand views,
- 30:10Speaker 1: I mean, and just blows my mind because he's not
- 30:13Speaker 1: that big of a deer. But there's just I don't know,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I think people do appreciate a little bit of uh,
- 30:20Speaker 1: you know, cool dear footage and being like you're in
- 30:22Speaker 1: the hunt as opposed to that highlight um rock and
- 30:26Speaker 1: roll music kind of stuff, you know sometimes. So I
- 30:29Speaker 1: don't know, I don't know really how to answer the question.
- 30:32Speaker 1: And I just, like you, I fight this a lot,
- 30:34Speaker 1: and I try to figure out what do people want
- 30:36Speaker 1: to watch. And at the same time, there's an artistic
- 30:40Speaker 1: aspect that I like as well, where and things meet,
- 30:44Speaker 1: like things have sentiment to me as well that you
- 30:47Speaker 1: know in some some of the hunts, and I'm like, man,
- 30:50Speaker 1: if I take that out, I don't know if I'll
- 30:52Speaker 1: ever remember to put that back in one day when
- 30:54Speaker 1: I make my video for myself, you know whatever. I'm
- 30:58Speaker 1: just gonna watch this on YouTube forever, and I'm going
- 31:00Speaker 1: to forget that that little thing happened that really meant
- 31:02Speaker 1: a lot to me, you know. So it's a big
- 31:05Speaker 1: balancing thing that I can't really figure out as well.
- 31:08Speaker 1: It's tough, man, And I think we're in ah. I
- 31:11Speaker 1: think we're in a transitionary period here because for a while,
- 31:15Speaker 1: you know, I mean, I made the conscious decision to
- 31:18Speaker 1: target public land white tills starting in two thousand and ten,
- 31:22Speaker 1: and solely because of my job at Peterson's Bow Hunting.
- 31:25Speaker 1: And I was like, man, this is not relatable stuff here,
- 31:27Speaker 1: Like I'm like the audience is telling me. And so
- 31:29Speaker 1: it was a business decision partly, and it was partly
- 31:31Speaker 1: just because I want to challenge myself. And at that time,
- 31:35Speaker 1: it was like you if you went out and kill
- 31:37Speaker 1: a buck on public land, people were like, holy cow.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Like I like, I remember people saying like I didn't
- 31:41Speaker 1: even think you could do this, you know what I mean.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Like actually when I started, when I started, I was
- 31:46Speaker 1: the same way. I was like, thank you, that's hard
- 31:48Speaker 1: to do. But of course we're in these Texas. It
- 31:50Speaker 1: is hard to do here, for sure, but it's you know, everybody,
- 31:55Speaker 1: I'm not saying Texas is easier in any aspect, believe me.
- 31:58Speaker 1: But everybody thinks they live in the hardest place to hunt,
- 32:02Speaker 1: and you know what I mean, Like, and so we
- 32:04Speaker 1: always do that. We we we bring that to the
- 32:06Speaker 1: table and we go, well, yeah, I guess you could
- 32:08Speaker 1: go do this here, but can you do it there?
- 32:10Speaker 1: And we've seen this over and over and it's just
- 32:13Speaker 1: generally hard where there's lots of pressure and and and
- 32:17Speaker 1: if you combine that with low deer density, it gets harder.
- 32:19Speaker 1: But it's so individualized, like there's so many different variables
- 32:24Speaker 1: that go on there. So I'm always like, we really
- 32:25Speaker 1: careful about those statements. But the thing that happened, and
- 32:30Speaker 1: I wasn't the only one, you know that the hunting
- 32:31Speaker 1: public guys they were working for Winkie and they were like, man,
- 32:33Speaker 1: we're gonna go out and do this differently, and they
- 32:35Speaker 1: crushed it right out of the gate. Like a lot
- 32:38Speaker 1: of people saw that hole in the market. And what
- 32:42Speaker 1: we did was we filled it really fast, and we
- 32:45Speaker 1: made public land hunting really popular. And now we've sort
- 32:49Speaker 1: of nullified the built in like belief of the challenge,
- 32:54Speaker 1: like we've sort of said, well, we've seen enough people
- 32:57Speaker 1: do this, and enough people promote this, so we do
- 33:00Speaker 1: we always do, and now we go, where's the trophies?
- 33:02Speaker 1: Like you know, it used to be like imagine, you know,
- 33:05Speaker 1: eight years ago if you went out and killed two
- 33:07Speaker 1: pope and young bucks on public land out of state,
- 33:09Speaker 1: like that was that was a big deal. Right now
- 33:12Speaker 1: you can go kill four and you're like, yeah, some
- 33:14Speaker 1: of these videos don't even do that well, Like people
- 33:15Speaker 1: are already like I need to see six, bro, I
- 33:17Speaker 1: need to see one. Eighties And it's this the cycle
- 33:20Speaker 1: of trophy hunting, that's just we we can't really get
- 33:23Speaker 1: out of our own way with it. And I don't
- 33:25Speaker 1: I don't know where we go next with this, but
- 33:26Speaker 1: we're gonna we're gonna burn this public land thing to
- 33:28Speaker 1: the ground probably and have to go hunt with self
- 33:32Speaker 1: bows and loincloths or something. I don't. I don't know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: maybe maybe sitting a tree and drop a brick on him.
- 33:38Speaker 1: I don't know what the hell we gotta do. But
- 33:40Speaker 1: it's gonna change, and it just it is the way
- 33:42Speaker 1: it is. But I still think, I still think that
- 33:46Speaker 1: the passion that you're bringing to it and the idea
- 33:49Speaker 1: that you're looking at that going listen. I don't know,
- 33:52Speaker 1: I feel like this is what people want to see.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Like I think that's a good thing. Like I think
- 33:55Speaker 1: people showing people more than like you said, the rock
- 33:59Speaker 1: music and the montage or the deer coming in and
- 34:02Speaker 1: then killing it in the high fives and all that stuff, Like,
- 34:04Speaker 1: I think that's important still no matter even if the
- 34:08Speaker 1: perception is changing out there. I guess. I think also
- 34:12Speaker 1: that one thing we try to do UM and I
- 34:16Speaker 1: think it's healthy. I think it's also really hard. It's
- 34:19Speaker 1: at times for us is um we have you know,
- 34:24Speaker 1: boning is really hard. Man like it, you know, for
- 34:29Speaker 1: guys like some of the people you've talked about on
- 34:31Speaker 1: this show, and for you it's um. You're so experienced
- 34:36Speaker 1: and it happens for you quite a bit compared to
- 34:40Speaker 1: other people, you know what I mean. And you get
- 34:42Speaker 1: more shots than other people because maybe you you know,
- 34:46Speaker 1: you're better you're better hunter, if we're just being frank
- 34:50Speaker 1: you because you've spent so much time outside and you've
- 34:53Speaker 1: also you're spending so much time in a stand that
- 34:56Speaker 1: you're gonna get more opportunities as well, and so like
- 35:00Speaker 1: the the it's different than the majority of the public.
- 35:03Speaker 1: And I've I'm starting to really really understand this where
- 35:08Speaker 1: you know people that even loved deer hunting here locally
- 35:13Speaker 1: from you know, for us, it's very normal to hunt
- 35:15Speaker 1: a small piece of property and you know, spent a
- 35:18Speaker 1: lot of time on it. And what it what ends
- 35:20Speaker 1: up happening is, um, you know, this is the one
- 35:23Speaker 1: chance that this guy gets to shoot a deer all
- 35:25Speaker 1: year and you know, the deer sees him draw and
- 35:31Speaker 1: he shoots at the deer and it's high dead zone
- 35:34Speaker 1: or whatever, and and that you know, he never never
- 35:38Speaker 1: find the deer. And I've got like I've had like
- 35:40Speaker 1: lots of people that I that I know in the
- 35:42Speaker 1: last couple of years that you know, love deer hunting.
- 35:46Speaker 1: It's spent a lot of time out there and maybe
- 35:48Speaker 1: haven't had quite as much time as as I've been
- 35:50Speaker 1: blessed to have in the stand that you know, they
- 35:54Speaker 1: get some pretty good bucks in front of him here
- 35:56Speaker 1: and there, and they just don't finish the jaw because
- 36:00Speaker 1: the shot. It's hard to shoot a deer with the
- 36:02Speaker 1: bow and kill it because they move. And you know,
- 36:06Speaker 1: especially when you're not hunting a feeder or a small
- 36:09Speaker 1: food plot, a deer is walking through a small shooting
- 36:12Speaker 1: lane at some point, you know, it's it's just tough.
- 36:15Speaker 1: And so I think that, uh, to get back to
- 36:17Speaker 1: what I was saying, is that we we have shown
- 36:20Speaker 1: some of our failures on video, and some of our
- 36:24Speaker 1: highest viewed videos are failed videos, and um, we just
- 36:31Speaker 1: hope that that sends that message that you're kind of
- 36:33Speaker 1: talking about is like, that's that kind of gets rid
- 36:36Speaker 1: of some of the disconnect of highlight reel. You know,
- 36:41Speaker 1: the universe we live in right now, that's you know,
- 36:44Speaker 1: like I was saying earlier with like TikTok, it's like,
- 36:46Speaker 1: show me fifteen seconds of something I've never seen before,
- 36:49Speaker 1: you know, and it's instead it says, you know, um,
- 36:53Speaker 1: here's some cool footage of a big buck or a
- 36:56Speaker 1: big elk or whatever. And we didn't finish the job.
- 36:59Speaker 1: We just are or you know, I made a liver
- 37:01Speaker 1: shot and waited eight hours through the night, and when
- 37:05Speaker 1: I came back, you know, I had a deer get
- 37:07Speaker 1: eaten completely. I'm talking every scrap of meat off that
- 37:10Speaker 1: thing by coyotes, you know. And so is that in Kansas? Yes,
- 37:14Speaker 1: and people do not like seeing that. I'll tell you
- 37:17Speaker 1: that right now. There has been some raging folks on
- 37:19Speaker 1: that video like, and I didn't like seeing it. It It
- 37:21Speaker 1: was hard for me to walk. Like when I saw
- 37:24Speaker 1: the deer, I saw it from like a hundred yards away,
- 37:27Speaker 1: kind of down into this little you know, drawer or whatever,
- 37:30Speaker 1: and I knew immediately that I wouldn't get any meat
- 37:33Speaker 1: off this deer. And the deer, I have no question
- 37:38Speaker 1: that the deer died from my liver shot before the
- 37:41Speaker 1: coyotes ate it, because it was in one spot, completely
- 37:45Speaker 1: pick clean. There was no like snow signs of struggle,
- 37:48Speaker 1: no hair everywhere or nothing, you know. Um. But still
- 37:51Speaker 1: it's just like I have so much respect for the animals,
- 37:54Speaker 1: man and the creation, and like those those um that
- 37:59Speaker 1: deer in particular, Uler was really really old, Like I
- 38:03Speaker 1: have thoughts that he's at least twelve years old. I
- 38:05Speaker 1: know it sounds ridiculous, but I had a buddy actually
- 38:07Speaker 1: shoot him like three years prior, and he was old
- 38:09Speaker 1: then and hit high dead zone, you know, and the
- 38:12Speaker 1: dear live through it. So just like the things they endure, man,
- 38:16Speaker 1: And then when you make a bad shot, and you know,
- 38:19Speaker 1: this thing has been living in the wild and the cold,
- 38:21Speaker 1: you know, and everything else and eating dirt pretty much
- 38:24Speaker 1: for years and years of its life and you wounded.
- 38:27Speaker 1: It's not a good feeling, you know, And I just
- 38:29Speaker 1: kind of want people to know like they're not alone,
- 38:32Speaker 1: you know. And it's, uh, we get a lot of
- 38:36Speaker 1: uh real really rude comments on on that kind of stuff,
- 38:40Speaker 1: and it's like it's taken a few years for us
- 38:42Speaker 1: to like become okay with that being the case. You know.
- 38:45Speaker 1: It's it's hard when people come at you like that.
- 38:47Speaker 1: It's something you This is something I really really love
- 38:50Speaker 1: doing and I really try hard to do well. So
- 38:53Speaker 1: it's difficult, and I would imagine at times still weighs
- 38:57Speaker 1: on us individually whenever we see a couple come through
- 39:00Speaker 1: on our own personal video, you know. So yeah, I mean,
- 39:06Speaker 1: what do you do about that? Right? Like, when we
- 39:09Speaker 1: we can pretend whatever we want, but when we do
- 39:13Speaker 1: this stuff, we're checking in to nature in a way
- 39:15Speaker 1: where we're just a part of it and we're not
- 39:18Speaker 1: like a perfect assassin like you know, we're checking in
- 39:23Speaker 1: as something that might make mistakes on this, Like we
- 39:27Speaker 1: might not do our job perfectly, and that's how that
- 39:30Speaker 1: ship goes. And you know, the losing things to coyotes
- 39:34Speaker 1: are losing deer to coyotes. Man, like that's just part
- 39:39Speaker 1: of the game. In some of these states, like there
- 39:42Speaker 1: there are places where you could leave a deer all
- 39:44Speaker 1: night long. I've let me put it this way. I've
- 39:47Speaker 1: never lost a deer to coyotes ever, And the closest
- 39:51Speaker 1: I ever came was in North Dakota last year. I
- 39:54Speaker 1: hit one the night before and went out to try
- 39:56Speaker 1: to find him, and I saw a coyote like running
- 40:00Speaker 1: over to this corner and he started. The only thing
- 40:02Speaker 1: he ate was his balls. I got everything else, So
- 40:05Speaker 1: I got really lucky. But what I'm saying is, like
- 40:08Speaker 1: some some places, this is like a real concern. You
- 40:12Speaker 1: hear that in Kansas a lot like you you just
- 40:15Speaker 1: do and they're out there covering ground and they run
- 40:18Speaker 1: across the scent of a wounded deer like they're they're
- 40:22Speaker 1: going to get on it. In some states like and
- 40:24Speaker 1: like you just didn't do your job as well as
- 40:26Speaker 1: you could, Like that's that's all that happens. And like
- 40:29Speaker 1: when you think about how common it is to not
- 40:32Speaker 1: make a perfect shot, like that's like our little secret,
- 40:35Speaker 1: like with all deer hunters or all big game hunters
- 40:38Speaker 1: are all hunters in generals, like we don't make perfect
- 40:40Speaker 1: shots a lot of the time, So what comes next
- 40:44Speaker 1: is up to a lot of different variables, and that's
- 40:46Speaker 1: one of them. Not you know, the people who I
- 40:49Speaker 1: get way people are upset with that, but you're also
- 40:51Speaker 1: looking at a cesspool of idiots in the comments there,
- 40:54Speaker 1: and it's not a great place to be. And you
- 40:57Speaker 1: know they weren't there, like they didn't shoot it. They
- 41:01Speaker 1: don't They didn't have your gut reaction. They didn't have
- 41:04Speaker 1: to make that game time decision of like how long
- 41:06Speaker 1: do we leave it? So it's like, well, like you tried, man,
- 41:11Speaker 1: so sometimes you lose, bro, Dude, I can promise you
- 41:15Speaker 1: I like I try hard, man. You know, I love
- 41:20Speaker 1: doing this. I always have, man like you know, I
- 41:24Speaker 1: uh we released uh so the buck that I killed
- 41:27Speaker 1: here at my my homestead, I guess um last year.
- 41:31Speaker 1: This is the first property that I've owned that I've
- 41:34Speaker 1: been able to hunt on and uh and hunted on.
- 41:37Speaker 1: And this has literally been a dream of mine since
- 41:39Speaker 1: I was since I started deer hunting like nine years old,
- 41:42Speaker 1: you know, And I mean having my own property. It
- 41:46Speaker 1: used to be I wanted the property in South Texas,
- 41:49Speaker 1: you know, I wanted a brush country property, and you know,
- 41:52Speaker 1: because that was where I killed my first deer, was
- 41:53Speaker 1: in South Texas on a hunted acre, low fence place,
- 41:57Speaker 1: you know, down there or whatever. And ever since then,
- 41:59Speaker 1: I've been just fascinated with that country, you know. But um, yeah,
- 42:03Speaker 1: I did this. We did a film out of this,
- 42:06Speaker 1: like a not just a video, but like the film
- 42:08Speaker 1: is literally a hundred minutes, you know, it's an almost
- 42:11Speaker 1: our forty And um, I didn't know like if people
- 42:14Speaker 1: would really watch it, you know and listen. I did
- 42:18Speaker 1: a couple of monologues and intro monologue and I talk
- 42:21Speaker 1: about all this, you know. And but you know, like
- 42:24Speaker 1: in that film, like I think people could really connect
- 42:26Speaker 1: with what I was saying and how much it means
- 42:28Speaker 1: to me. And I think it got to show aside
- 42:30Speaker 1: for people, um that maybe a lot of people don't
- 42:33Speaker 1: see in the YouTube world, you know, because everything is
- 42:36Speaker 1: so glamorous and quick and you know, just radical and
- 42:40Speaker 1: whatever it has to be to get attention. But the
- 42:43Speaker 1: video has actually done really well man. And I I
- 42:46Speaker 1: mean we there attention on it. You know this not
- 42:49Speaker 1: people may not care to hear this, but like we have,
- 42:52Speaker 1: like out of a hundred minutes, we're getting like fifty
- 42:55Speaker 1: minute average view time. So that's that includes people that
- 42:58Speaker 1: start the video and go, oh, I didn't know this
- 43:00Speaker 1: was deer hunting or whatever, you know, and they click
- 43:03Speaker 1: off in three seconds, and so that's pretty wild that
- 43:06Speaker 1: like people will sit in and watch something like that
- 43:08Speaker 1: and listen to me kind of tell my story, and
- 43:10Speaker 1: I think hopefully they get to see how much truly
- 43:13Speaker 1: I've loved deer hunting for since I was young, when
- 43:16Speaker 1: I used to just draw deer every time I drew something,
- 43:19Speaker 1: you know. I mean, it's just I don't know what
- 43:21Speaker 1: it is about, dear, but I have realized in the
- 43:23Speaker 1: last year that, like I've always been fascinated with them,
- 43:26Speaker 1: it's not something that I just have pursued in the
- 43:28Speaker 1: last couple of years because I feel like I can
- 43:31Speaker 1: do video well and I think I can make some
- 43:33Speaker 1: money at it. You know, this is something I absolutely
- 43:35Speaker 1: love doing. You know. Yeah, well, I think that's I think.
- 43:40Speaker 1: You know, you've got little kids. You see this with
- 43:42Speaker 1: little kids, and I think we forget this. But I
- 43:44Speaker 1: think we're really drawn to mystery. Like I think we
- 43:48Speaker 1: like surprises, and I think we're I think as you get,
- 43:53Speaker 1: as you become an adult, you sort of fight this
- 43:55Speaker 1: battle of like if I have realistic spectations, I know
- 44:00Speaker 1: what's coming. You know, there's no bad surprises, there's nothing
- 44:04Speaker 1: that's gonna you know, take me out. It's just kind
- 44:06Speaker 1: of like consistent, boring bullshit. But we we lean toward it.
- 44:11Speaker 1: And then you go do something like deer hunting, and
- 44:13Speaker 1: the coolest thing is when that buck walks over the
- 44:15Speaker 1: ridge and you're like, I've never seen him before, or
- 44:18Speaker 1: you you know, like when you I think that. One
- 44:21Speaker 1: of the coolest things about all this stuff, whether small
- 44:24Speaker 1: ofll fish and or pheasant hunting or hunting deer, is
- 44:27Speaker 1: sometimes when you go out there, you're like, I don't
- 44:30Speaker 1: I I have no faith I'm going to see a deer,
- 44:33Speaker 1: or have no faith I'm going to catch a good
- 44:35Speaker 1: smalley or shoot a pheasant. And when when it breaks
- 44:38Speaker 1: your way, it's like, even though you've done it, you know,
- 44:40Speaker 1: dozens of times, or hundreds of times, or maybe thousands
- 44:43Speaker 1: of times, it's still like, I cannot believe that just happened.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Like when you when you show up at a new
- 44:47Speaker 1: place and you're like, I read the maps I looked
- 44:48Speaker 1: at on ax, I walked in here, and you sat
- 44:50Speaker 1: there and all of a sudden you look up and
- 44:52Speaker 1: he's walking on the trail. It's like, holy balls, that's
- 44:55Speaker 1: an amazing gift that we have. And I think I
- 44:59Speaker 1: think it really keeps us like inspired to just like
- 45:02Speaker 1: that that that's like a self feeding thing too, the
- 45:04Speaker 1: more that you just allow yourself to be, like I
- 45:06Speaker 1: want to be in a position where like, if this
- 45:08Speaker 1: this breaks a little bit my way, it's freaking awesome.
- 45:11Speaker 1: And you know, if you go kill one, it's it's
- 45:13Speaker 1: that's like a game changer, but it doesn't have to
- 45:15Speaker 1: get to that level to be really really good for you. Yeah, dude,
- 45:19Speaker 1: you nailed it. I mean, like Casey always says, you
- 45:22Speaker 1: have to give amazing a chance to happen, you know.
- 45:24Speaker 1: So it's kind of the whole concept of I can't
- 45:26Speaker 1: kill him from the couch, you know. So, But like
- 45:28Speaker 1: I had the same thing happened man and uh in
- 45:32Speaker 1: Kansas about a week and a half ago, And you know,
- 45:35Speaker 1: I had been I had been hunting hard um a
- 45:39Speaker 1: buck on my dad's lease up there, and I haven't
- 45:43Speaker 1: hunted he he uh he usually or he we I've
- 45:47Speaker 1: always had a spot on his lease. You know, I'm
- 45:50Speaker 1: kind of a low man on the tote total pole
- 45:52Speaker 1: because he always, you know, lets me hunt out there,
- 45:54Speaker 1: and so I don't try to step on anybody's toes.
- 45:56Speaker 1: I don't want to hunt anybody's dear. And they want
- 45:58Speaker 1: to shoot big deer, so they try to shoot five
- 46:01Speaker 1: year old plus dear. And so um, this year, my
- 46:04Speaker 1: dad didn't draw because everybody saw Crisp's video last year
- 46:08Speaker 1: and wanted to go shoot deer in Kansas. So they
- 46:11Speaker 1: all applied and my dad didn't draw, attacked the first
- 46:13Speaker 1: time like twenty years, you know, and uh and so
- 46:17Speaker 1: um there was only a couple of guys hunting on
- 46:19Speaker 1: the lease even this year, and so um, I was like, well,
- 46:23Speaker 1: you know, there's not gonna be many deer taking off
- 46:25Speaker 1: the place this year. I'm gonna go hunt this big
- 46:28Speaker 1: eleven point that we've been watching for, you know, since
- 46:31Speaker 1: I got video in twenty seventeen. The first year Casey
- 46:33Speaker 1: and I were hunting Kansas together and Casey took a
- 46:36Speaker 1: video of him and uh, he's big, big hunting him
- 46:40Speaker 1: for days and days, I was sick, man, I got
- 46:42Speaker 1: I got food poisoning, I think up there and it
- 46:45Speaker 1: was miserable, and we get I mean I've literally hunted
- 46:48Speaker 1: ten days up there, and then um we get a win.
- 46:52Speaker 1: All right. We spooked him one morning, uh rattled him in,
- 46:54Speaker 1: spooked him like seventy yards as a long story, but um,
- 46:59Speaker 1: I is just like beat down, and I was like, yeah,
- 47:01Speaker 1: I don't want to do. The winds gonna be terrible
- 47:02Speaker 1: tomorrow two for him, so I can't really hunt him.
- 47:05Speaker 1: And so I was like, I'm just gonna go to
- 47:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna go over to a piece of public and
- 47:11Speaker 1: just see as the as the slogan goes, see what happens,
- 47:14Speaker 1: you know. And so I I went over and and uh,
- 47:19Speaker 1: my cameraman and I actually split up because there's two
- 47:21Speaker 1: drainages on this place and we were gonna watch them both.
- 47:23Speaker 1: And they three does in a big buck walk work
- 47:28Speaker 1: into the top his canyon like three quarters of a
- 47:30Speaker 1: mile away, you know, right after the sun kind of
- 47:32Speaker 1: starts hitting the landscape. And long story short, Um, we
- 47:37Speaker 1: snuck in on this deer and I killed him at
- 47:40Speaker 1: fifty yards from the ground, um, which I've never shot
- 47:43Speaker 1: over forty And I just knew that. I said, I
- 47:45Speaker 1: told myself, if I'm gonna shoot the shot, I know
- 47:47Speaker 1: how far he is I need to focus and if
- 47:50Speaker 1: and I need to my pen does not need to
- 47:52Speaker 1: be floating around. And so it all happened out to
- 47:55Speaker 1: where it was that way. I spent a lot of
- 47:56Speaker 1: time holding on him when I was at full draw. Uh.
- 48:00Speaker 1: But when I when when I shot him, it's literally
- 48:04Speaker 1: it's a it's a I'm talking dead nuts in the
- 48:07Speaker 1: heart at fifty yards and he comes had no clue, dude.
- 48:11Speaker 1: He comes back down the trail at me and like
- 48:14Speaker 1: gets to like thirty and I didn't know for sure
- 48:16Speaker 1: it was hard. I knew it was kind of low,
- 48:18Speaker 1: and so I'm like trying to knock another arrow. I
- 48:20Speaker 1: get it knocked, I clip on. I look up and
- 48:22Speaker 1: he's literally closer than when I shot him. He's at
- 48:25Speaker 1: like forty yards and he's stumbling and he falls and
- 48:29Speaker 1: crashes right there. And I just turned to my caraman
- 48:31Speaker 1: Eric and like tackled him like form tackling. Dude. I
- 48:35Speaker 1: was just like, you know, it's like you say, like
- 48:38Speaker 1: when something like that happens, you just like every time
- 48:41Speaker 1: I stalk a deer, I go, it's this won't happen,
- 48:44Speaker 1: and me in case he would just laugh and stuff,
- 48:46Speaker 1: you know, like We're just out there like there will
- 48:48Speaker 1: be sixty yards from the dear. We're laughing, you know,
- 48:50Speaker 1: because we're like, this thing gonna happen. We're just telling
- 48:52Speaker 1: jokes and stuff. And that's how it was on that one.
- 48:55Speaker 1: And then literally, you know, we're sitting fifty yards from
- 48:58Speaker 1: him in the grass while he's bed and waiting on
- 49:00Speaker 1: stand up, and in ten seconds, my whole season changes.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Just a massive deer goes down to four yards and it's,
- 49:08Speaker 1: like you said, it's like the most amazing thing, dude,
- 49:11Speaker 1: Like when something like that happens and it surprises you, man,
- 49:14Speaker 1: And that surprise, like you said, is something that I
- 49:17Speaker 1: do think we crave. Man. It's it's a to see
- 49:20Speaker 1: something new and amazing happen. It's such a blessing, man,
- 49:22Speaker 1: It's awesome, it is. I mean, I had the film
- 49:25Speaker 1: in the series for for us here, you know that
- 49:28Speaker 1: that big one I killed in Minnesota. I mean I
- 49:31Speaker 1: would I was sitting there thinking like how long is
- 49:36Speaker 1: my camera man gonna make it because it was so cold,
- 49:39Speaker 1: and I was just like I just didn't have that
- 49:40Speaker 1: much faith, and I'm like I would have shot a
- 49:42Speaker 1: hundred inchre And then you have an awesome buck run
- 49:45Speaker 1: in and you know, six days later, I'm sitting there
- 49:48Speaker 1: and stand and had made a lot of mistakes in
- 49:50Speaker 1: the last few days. And it's like one o'clock in
- 49:53Speaker 1: the afternoon, sixty degrees during the rut, and you're like,
- 49:56Speaker 1: I don't know, man, Like I've never killed a mid
- 49:58Speaker 1: day cruiser before. You look up on the hill and
- 50:01Speaker 1: here he comes, and it's just like no way, Like
- 50:04Speaker 1: no way, But where else? I always think about this
- 50:09Speaker 1: as an adult, like and you're like, like, where else
- 50:11Speaker 1: can you get that? Like where else can you get
- 50:13Speaker 1: something like this? Like there aren't very many places for that.
- 50:16Speaker 1: And it's the same thing like when you talk about
- 50:19Speaker 1: the adrenaline dump you get after after doing what you
- 50:23Speaker 1: did there in on that buck. It's like how many
- 50:26Speaker 1: things can you do? Like how many freaking avenues does
- 50:29Speaker 1: an adult man have to get that feeling? Like they're
- 50:32Speaker 1: not that many, like unless you want to really risk
- 50:34Speaker 1: your life doing something and we don't, you know, like
- 50:38Speaker 1: like I don't want a cage fight. I don't want
- 50:39Speaker 1: to jump off of like buildings with squirrel suits on,
- 50:42Speaker 1: Like there's only so many routes for a guy like me.
- 50:44Speaker 1: I just I think it's amazing that we have that.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Like it's it's such a gift. It is, man, you're
- 50:50Speaker 1: a right man. Like it's uh that the the instance
- 50:55Speaker 1: of that happening, um for us is really cool. And
- 50:59Speaker 1: I think that what we when we run into is uh,
- 51:03Speaker 1: like once you get out of college, you just like
- 51:06Speaker 1: culturally here in America, were expected to get a job,
- 51:09Speaker 1: right and so which I didn't do. Um, I went
- 51:12Speaker 1: huring and making no money and I'm still poor and uh,
- 51:17Speaker 1: you know, but I I have good experiences, man, you know,
- 51:19Speaker 1: like I get to do some awesome stuff. And um,
- 51:23Speaker 1: I definitely am blessed with lots of opportunities and have
- 51:26Speaker 1: a different situation. You know, I didn't. Um, I can't
- 51:30Speaker 1: even say I'm not My situation is different, you know,
- 51:34Speaker 1: Like there was there's people that they did have to
- 51:36Speaker 1: get a job as soon as they got out of
- 51:38Speaker 1: high school or whatever because their whole their whole family
- 51:42Speaker 1: for generations has been broke, broke people, you know, and
- 51:44Speaker 1: so like I am truly blessed man. Um, not that
- 51:48Speaker 1: I have like money in my family, but I I
- 51:50Speaker 1: did know that like if something happened, that I had
- 51:56Speaker 1: family members and people that would help me out. I
- 51:59Speaker 1: didn't want that to happen, and luckily I never got to.
- 52:01Speaker 1: I mean, I'll be honest, man, I've sat in my
- 52:04Speaker 1: driveway at the first house that I that I ever bought,
- 52:08Speaker 1: going I can't pay the mortgage this month, and I'm
- 52:10Speaker 1: literally in tears in my driveway, you know, and I'm like,
- 52:14Speaker 1: I gotta find a job, I gotta do something, and
- 52:16Speaker 1: I I just luckily I've made it through. Man. You know, Um,
- 52:20Speaker 1: I wanted to. I wanted to always provide for myself
- 52:24Speaker 1: my family, you know, but um, I didn't know that
- 52:27Speaker 1: I had other family members that take care of me.
- 52:29Speaker 1: So I just want to clarify that. It's like, you know,
- 52:32Speaker 1: my situation is not as desperate as some people's in America, right,
- 52:35Speaker 1: But like, as an American, generally we are expected to
- 52:39Speaker 1: get a job. And when you get your job, like
- 52:41Speaker 1: you said, we like the we kind of gravitate towards
- 52:44Speaker 1: this whole um. You know, if you have a nine
- 52:48Speaker 1: to five and it pays for you know, you live
- 52:51Speaker 1: within your means. Then generally, as Americans were like convenience too,
- 52:55Speaker 1: and everything is pretty convenient, you know, other than maybe
- 52:58Speaker 1: traffic when you're coming home from more like you can
- 53:01Speaker 1: go get fast food if you need to, you can
- 53:03Speaker 1: go to the grocery store. We got clean water, we
- 53:05Speaker 1: got trash system that keeps all the trash out of
- 53:07Speaker 1: the streets. And now that you know, like it's the
- 53:10Speaker 1: best place in the world to live. And so um,
- 53:12Speaker 1: we kind of get into this groove where like we
- 53:15Speaker 1: like that, we like to convenience with like a bed
- 53:17Speaker 1: to sleep in at night, you know, And you're right,
- 53:19Speaker 1: like nothing really amazing happens when you just kind of
- 53:23Speaker 1: do the same thing every day typically, um, and there's
- 53:28Speaker 1: not many avenues for us to to find that kind
- 53:31Speaker 1: of adrenaline unless you, like you said, you're, uh, you
- 53:34Speaker 1: jump out of planes or your drug addict or something
- 53:36Speaker 1: maybe I don't know, but like that's that would be
- 53:39Speaker 1: the only like there's only a few things. And like
- 53:42Speaker 1: I said, you don't risk your life and pretty much,
- 53:45Speaker 1: you know, if you're fairly safe going up into a tree,
- 53:48Speaker 1: like you're pretty safe deer hunting and you're actually doing
- 53:51Speaker 1: something that gets you just so hot, man, that's fairly safe.
- 53:55Speaker 1: It's it's cool, man, It's it's as good as it gets.
- 53:59Speaker 1: So is it safe to say the Element Boys aren't
- 54:01Speaker 1: driving around the Lamborghinis and using ivory backscratchers at home. No,
- 54:05Speaker 1: we uh in case he's slept in the bed of
- 54:07Speaker 1: his truck all week last week, you know, and uh,
- 54:11Speaker 1: we've spent a lot of time my my cameraman. Eric
- 54:13Speaker 1: actually um just sleeps on the ground in the tent
- 54:16Speaker 1: when we go places. I'm like, dude, I have an
- 54:19Speaker 1: air mattress, you know. And he's like, no, I'll be
- 54:21Speaker 1: all right, I got a comforter. I'm like, no, that's
- 54:24Speaker 1: not okay. You know, you need to be on the
- 54:26Speaker 1: stair right. He's like, no, I'm good man. How old
- 54:28Speaker 1: is he? He's thirty one? Oh, he's he's too old
- 54:32Speaker 1: for that ship. Oh definitely do I was I thought
- 54:35Speaker 1: you were gonna say, yeah, no, No. We had a
- 54:38Speaker 1: twenty year old last year, and um, I would say
- 54:41Speaker 1: a thirty one year old just has a little more
- 54:43Speaker 1: responsibility about himself typically, you know, generally speaking, uh and
- 54:48Speaker 1: ur and Eric is just awesome dude, but like, yeah,
- 54:51Speaker 1: he's very Uh he doesn't need much, you know, and
- 54:54Speaker 1: that's that's I mean. To to really roll around with us,
- 54:56Speaker 1: you kind of have to be that way a little bit.
- 54:59Speaker 1: It's just um, it's not always fun. There are moments
- 55:04Speaker 1: that it's just like college football, man, Like you go out,
- 55:07Speaker 1: I played, you know, I mean, I've told you that
- 55:09Speaker 1: before you go out twelve or fourteen times a year
- 55:13Speaker 1: and have the coolest experience that you can have. Your
- 55:17Speaker 1: nerves are going. It's like shooting a deer, right, You're
- 55:19Speaker 1: like almost shaking before kickoff. You kind of get into
- 55:22Speaker 1: the groove, but like there are thousands of people there
- 55:25Speaker 1: and maybe even millions on TV, depending on if you're
- 55:27Speaker 1: on ESPN or whatever. It's insane, dude, for like thirteen days,
- 55:31Speaker 1: and then there's three hundred and twenty days outside of
- 55:34Speaker 1: that that you're literally like trying not to throw up
- 55:38Speaker 1: because you're working out and you got homework, but you
- 55:42Speaker 1: also have to do an hour and a half of
- 55:44Speaker 1: film study with your individual group. And you know what
- 55:48Speaker 1: people don't see is that and the same thing with music, right,
- 55:51Speaker 1: Like they don't see you drive eight hours from the
- 55:54Speaker 1: night before to your next venue and set up for
- 55:57Speaker 1: two hours sound check and all that. Then go eat
- 56:00Speaker 1: some crappy food and you know, go into a dirty
- 56:03Speaker 1: hotel room and get you know, if you're lucky, and
- 56:06Speaker 1: get dressed and then you know, what they see is
- 56:08Speaker 1: the ninety minuteure on stage having you know, an awesome time,
- 56:13Speaker 1: and it looks like so glamorous, But there are definitely
- 56:15Speaker 1: moments and the same thing in traveling and hunting that
- 56:19Speaker 1: I didn't want to go out the other day in
- 56:21Speaker 1: Colorado when it was eight degrees and the wind show
- 56:23Speaker 1: was you know, zero or whatever. But you know, kind
- 56:27Speaker 1: of kind of feel obligated to. We're spending money, business
- 56:31Speaker 1: money on tags and stuff, you know, and gas, so
- 56:34Speaker 1: kind of feel obligated to. If I was hunting just
- 56:38Speaker 1: for fun, I might have missed that morning. You know,
- 56:40Speaker 1: I might have just stayed in the you know, I
- 56:43Speaker 1: might have drove around and tried to you know, scout
- 56:46Speaker 1: deer from the truck. But instead I got out on
- 56:47Speaker 1: the ground and did some stuff. You know. So there
- 56:49Speaker 1: are there are things, but I mean, I literally can't
- 56:52Speaker 1: complain because this is the dream job that I would have.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Man Like since I was nine years old, I wanted
- 56:58Speaker 1: to deer hunt and for a living. I didn't know
- 57:00Speaker 1: what out and then i'd be on YouTube or whatever,
- 57:03Speaker 1: you know, but I knew that, like that was something
- 57:05Speaker 1: I wanted to do, and you know, it's a dream.
- 57:08Speaker 1: It literally is a dream, you know when you bring
- 57:21Speaker 1: up those three examples of playing college football, playing in
- 57:26Speaker 1: a band, being a musician, and then doing this, you know,
- 57:30Speaker 1: creating hunting content around specifically around public land white tails.
- 57:37Speaker 1: What you're saying is you just kind of learned the
- 57:42Speaker 1: things that take a lot of work are the things
- 57:43Speaker 1: that are worth the most. Like you said it without
- 57:46Speaker 1: saying it, And I think that's the greatest message out
- 57:50Speaker 1: there with this public land movement is by showing people
- 57:55Speaker 1: that this can be done by you going and showing
- 57:58Speaker 1: up in Illinois or Kansas, are somewhere and on a
- 58:00Speaker 1: big one. You show people that this is, this is doable,
- 58:04Speaker 1: like like this is this is something within your purview,
- 58:07Speaker 1: Like this is in your grasp, like you can do this,
- 58:09Speaker 1: and it inspires people to get out there. Like I
- 58:12Speaker 1: think I think that that's you know, the hunting public
- 58:15Speaker 1: does a great job of that too, Like I think
- 58:17Speaker 1: it's really important for people to understand that, whether whether
- 58:20Speaker 1: they actually aspire to be a public land killer or not,
- 58:23Speaker 1: Like you can see even if you don't acknowledge it,
- 58:25Speaker 1: you can see that there has to be some work here,
- 58:28Speaker 1: Like you're you're taking these people who are not. They're
- 58:30Speaker 1: not writing huge checks to hunt somewhere. They're sleeping in
- 58:33Speaker 1: free contents. They're hunting on over the counter tags or
- 58:35Speaker 1: tags that you can draw, and they're just dedicated to
- 58:39Speaker 1: the process and they're going to see it through to
- 58:41Speaker 1: the end. And you do that enough and you kill
- 58:44Speaker 1: good deer in places where you're technically not supposed to
- 58:47Speaker 1: or like we're theoretically like it should be really really hard,
- 58:50Speaker 1: but it can be done. And we're seeing people show
- 58:53Speaker 1: this all over the place, and I think I think
- 58:55Speaker 1: it's the same thing, like on a way smaller scale.
- 58:58Speaker 1: You know, everybody loves dog, right, Like people who don't
- 59:00Speaker 1: love dogs are sociopaths. We we don't want we don't
- 59:03Speaker 1: want to hang this same thing as people who don't
- 59:04Speaker 1: love music. I'm like, what's wrong with you anyway? When
- 59:07Speaker 1: you when you love hunting dogs, working dogs. Everybody has
- 59:12Speaker 1: the best dog. Everybody's dog is the best dog ever,
- 59:14Speaker 1: Like we all own the number one, you know. But
- 59:17Speaker 1: then you get around a dog that's been trained really
- 59:20Speaker 1: really well and has a good working relationship with its owner,
- 59:24Speaker 1: and it's like it's out there on that team thing
- 59:27Speaker 1: and it's it's doing it's doing this job in a
- 59:30Speaker 1: way that you maybe have never seen before. You go, WHOA, Like,
- 59:32Speaker 1: now I know what they're capable of. Like I had
- 59:35Speaker 1: something awesome already. Now that I see this, I go,
- 59:38Speaker 1: this could be even better. But there's a lot of
- 59:41Speaker 1: work there, Like there's a lot to build in to
- 59:45Speaker 1: to have that end result. But it's worth it. It's
- 59:48Speaker 1: it's worth it not only for the end result, but
- 59:49Speaker 1: how you feel through that process. And I literally don't
- 59:53Speaker 1: think we have a better opportunity for that for a
- 59:55Speaker 1: lot of us than just going out and challenging ourselves
- 59:58Speaker 1: with deer. Yeah. Percent, man, that's a you know, like
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: you you mentioned being dedicated to the process and that's
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: like that that's a huge uh point for people to
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: think about here when it comes to this, because, UM,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I know for us, something Casey and I talked about
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: a lot is that Um, Like you said, everybody thinks
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: they hunt the hardest place, But I've hunted a lot
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: of states now and I do know that East Texas
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: UM has been very difficult to hunt UM for us,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: And UM, you know one thing that we have is
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: smaller deer. They make less sign we see less rubs,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: we see less scrapes, the trails are made by hundred
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: forty pound deer instead two hundred forty pound deer. You know,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: like the sign is just less and the trails are less,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: and so like, I can't remember when I first um
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: started hunting with Casey. He's, like I said earlier, he's
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: very observant and so like he helped me to really
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: start to understand sign even better and like locate sign
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: and better really um and so, but I can remember
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: we would we started out hunting here locally, and he
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: would go, oh, there's a trailer right there, and I
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: would be like, you know, I've been hunting Caness or something.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: I'm like, that's not a trailer. I don't know what
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: you're talking about. That's you're crazy. And now I see it,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: you know, like it several years later, I've been able
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: to see what he's talking about. And you know, there's
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: there's not a high population either, it's not high density,
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: so there's just not a lot of signs. So what
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: we've kind of noticed, we think at least, is that
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: hunting here and kind of cutting our teeth on public
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: land here has made us better hunters other places. So like,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: if you're listening and you're from you know, Florida or
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Alabama or something like that where things are a little
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: bit different, or Louisiana or whatever. You know, that's uh,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: something that could kind of give you some confidence maybe
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: is to know that, like this is a place that
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: is tough to hunt. If I can learn to hunt here,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: then I can apply a lot of these things that
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: dear generally do in other places and really start to
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: figure things out pretty well in other places. You know.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: And part of the reason we travel to Illinois or
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: something like that or i was because there's there's big
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: deer and the sign is a little bit easier to read.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Now there are things like you know, night sign and
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: you know what sign is relevant, what sign is hot?
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: You know, and stuff like that that you start to
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: have to You run into issues with that when you
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: go to Iowa and you're like, dude, there are scrapes
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: and rubs everywhere, Like, what do I do with this?
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: You know, it's too much, it's overload. But the thing
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: that I I do see is you know that we
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: kind of we kind of have that going for us.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: But I guess when I'm trying to track back to
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: is the point where you said, falling in love with
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: the process or being dedicated to the process is very
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: important because it took us a few years to kind
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: of find our group of hunting and filming and trying
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: to find you know, good close encounters where you kill deer.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: And I think we're seeing it pay off a little bit,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: you know, but um, a lot of guys. Man, we
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: get a ton of people that send us messages or whatever,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: and they're like, you know, uh, man, I just struggled
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: so much this year. I haven't had hardly any any
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: good encounters. You know. I don't know, I'm trying to
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: kill a dough and I can't even kill a dough,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: you know. And I think that, Um, what we're seeing
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: is there's a lot of accessibility in this hunting, this
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: public hunting movement. Um, so guys are getting well and
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: also through the coronavirus stuff, Like we've seen this kind
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: of a lot of people talk about like maybe a
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: hipster movement or something like that, where people are starting
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: to get into hunting for the first time. And we
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: have you know, Eric, our cameraman, he's only been hunt
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: a couple of years. And another one of our caraman,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: producer kind of guys that works with us as well,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: named Chris. I mean he wears black skinny jeans into
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: the woods. I mean that is what he wears. So
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: and literally he wore the little like they're like boots,
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: but they're like that tall. As for people who can't
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: hear me, it's like four or see me, it's like
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: four inches, you know, like it's the hipster boot. You know,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: that's what he wears into the woods. And he's a
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: fair of the new hunter. You know, he grew up
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: in the Dallas metro area and didn't hunt, and you know,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: his dad's an accountant, and you know that that's the
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: life you live until the last couple of years and
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: you find this like sustainability movement, right and so but
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: I think people are getting maybe a little what could
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: be confusing to them, is it? And it does look easy,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: like you said, sometimes we have these highlight reels that
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: look easy, right, but it's not. It's not easy. And
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: if you I've been hunting since I was you know tiny,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: and Casey has to dude, Casey probably started hunting before
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: I did. And um, he's a year younger, so we're
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: you know, we probably have you know, fifty years of
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: combined experience between us, and like I said in the beginning,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: we're bouncing fifty years of experience off of each other
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: the whole time. And if you're kind of a hipster
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: dude that's uh been hunting for two years now, you
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: just can't expect that you're gonna to have a whole
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: lot of success, you know. So just like fall in
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: love with the process of learning how to how to
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: get encounters, how to get closer to hear what sign
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: means and stuff, and learned from these people. Learn from Tony,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: you know, learn from you Man, learn from Mark and
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: some of the people there at Mediator, and learn from
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: uh the hunt in public, and learn you know, hopefully
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: from us. We try to put a lot of content
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: out there that teaches people how to read maps and
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: how do what we see when we go boot scouting
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: and stuff. You know, So, uh just dive into that
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: and and understand that there may be some moments early
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: on that you are very bored in the stand and
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: things are not going your way, but it just it
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: takes that to get through, and you have to be
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: dedicated the process. Like you said, let's let's clear this up.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: You don't have to. We're not against tipsters here. You
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: can man. Yeah, I don't want to offend anybody in
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: Bozeman specifically with this podcast. Uh. But here's the thing
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: about what you just said. I and I see this
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: a lot. I think there's two things that the hunting
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: industry did very poorly that we're still suffering from today
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: and we may suffer from until hunting is freaking gone.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: One is we made it look too easy to kill
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: big bucks that we set as unrealistic standard. That's just stupid.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: It's it's like you can probably compare it to like,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: you know, I know we don't watch network television a
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: ton now, like, but you know when you were growing up,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: when I was growing up, there are sitcoms on and
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: there'd be like this fat dad bob dude with a
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: supermodel wife every time. Like it's not real, like what
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: you're seeing that that doesn't exist, Like unless that dude
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: started Microsoft or something doesn't happen. So we we we
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: did that and we're still suffering from it today. We're
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: suffering from it, maybe more than ever now that because
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: we have social media and we can see every two
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: buck that's ever killed ever and the other thing is
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: we convince people they can look at bucks and age them.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: So everybody thinks that they can just read a buck
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: on the hoof and go that one's two and a half,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: that one's four and a half. It's I'm telling you,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: we cannot do that, and the people who think they
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: can are lying to themselves. This is not an easy
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: thing to do. Wildlife biologists cannot do it. Some random
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: dude who's killed three bucks definitely can't do it. But
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: the problem here is with those two things. And now
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: we have this public land movement. People go, well, I'm
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: gonna go out and do that. And I know that
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: you see this a lot, and I see this too.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: I think the thing holding a lot of people back
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: is their expectations. Their standards are way too high for
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: their experience level. And I don't want to sound like
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: a dick there because I don't mean it that way,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: but like you wouldn't like if if you and I
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: got together and play guitar, people would be like, Tyler's
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: a lot better than Tony. Like I wouldn't show up
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: and expect to play like you can't because I know
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I cannot. Like I just know even though we we
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: maybe have been playing the same amount of time. I
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: guarantee you you've put in so much more to that
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: pursuit than I have. Without question. So if I showed
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: up and I was like, I'm gonna be like him,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: it wouldn't happen. When you're talking about hunting, like maybe
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: you have hunted thirty years, But is it three weekends
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: a season or is it are you living in a
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: tent for forty days and hunting public land? And like
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: there's a big big It varies a lot, and I
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: see a lot of people bring in somebody else's standards
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: to this. And you know, I know this happens to
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: you all the time. It happens to me too, when
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: people reach out and be like, I'm hunting this shooter
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: and I got pictures of him on this public land,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: but I I haven't seen him yet. I'm really frustrated, and
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: here's my stand What do I do? And it's like
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: a screen, I'm like, what do you expect me to
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: do with this man? Like I don't I can't stand
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: that stuff because I can't. I can't help you, you know,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: like there's way too much missing here. And I always
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: I always get this vibe not always, but percent a time,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: I'm like, you probably shouldn't be just targeting that caliber
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: of buck yet, Like you don't seem like you're there yet.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: And I know, like it's a hard thing for us
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: guys specifically to do. You do see women in the
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: industry doing it now too, but man, like recognizing that, Okay, well,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: maybe on Gramdma's farm, I can hold out for one forties.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: But if I travel a lot of eight and I'm
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: and I'm hunting public land for the first time and
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: I can't go climb into my ladder stand on my
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: food plot, that's a different thing. I think you go
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: by that saddle and you want to go go mobile wherever,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: like okay, but you're not at the same level you
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: were at home, like you and I think that that
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: we're like, we're that's danger ground there. Yeah. No, I
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: hadn't even thought about the age thing. Man, that's that's
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: definitely something. Um So, there are some forums I'm not
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: gonna name them, um and then some Facebook groups that
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: I'm a part of, um, just I'll say they're Texas
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: based groups. And you know this is where quality deer
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: management started here in Texas, right, So, dude, the number
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: one post in November that you'll see is a picture
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: of a buck and it'll say an age and score,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: and it is. It is. It's comical, dude, I mean
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: it literally because for one, with you know Texas, it
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: takes you fifteen hours to drive across Texas. So you're
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: talking about some deer can way to fifty and then
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: there's deer that are you know, if they weigh one fifty,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: that's a nice size buck, you know in certain parts
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: of Texas. So you know, who even knows that this
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: guy's hunting? You know, no telling what the age of
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: this dear is. He could be three or it could
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: be seven. You know, there's no telling. And so I
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: hadn't really thought about that as being an issue, but
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: I would have thought about what you said about the
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: expectations thing, and we talked about it a lot on
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: our podcast. Um and I'll be frank when we go
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: to South Dakota, I am. I am all about shooting
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: a one and a half year old buck. If that's like,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: it's just it's there. There's so many deer there, you know,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: and I wouldn't say like it's maybe the biggest buck
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: state or whatever. There's nice bucks there too. We saw
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: a giant uh come through camp when we were there
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: this year. But like, I'm going there to have a
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: good time in the early season when it's nice weather.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: And frankly, dude, if I can shoot like a six
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: or eight point buck and then go shoot sharp tails
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: or pheasant, I would be because you I've told you
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: this before. I loved your hunting so much. But I
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: think I like shooting a shotgun better than I like
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: deer hunting, probably like I and and that that would
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: be like you know, clay targets are fun, but at
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: any any winged animal. I love shooting a shotgun and
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: it's one of my things that I grew up doing
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: NonStop in high school. And I feel like probably do
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: better than I do anything else is shoot a shotgun,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: and so it's so much fun. Dude, I love I
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: love shooting birds. I love that surprise we were talking
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: about earlier when a bird bird gets out of the
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: grass man, and um, it's just the best. So like
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: when I go to South Dakota, I'm trying to shoot
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: a small bug. I've been hunting twenty five years and
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: like I shot a one probably one and a half
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: year old eight point last year and was stoked. Dude,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: I'm talking. It's you know, and that's that's where setting
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: your expectations is key, you know. I mean, I I
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: don't go to Kansas or um. You know, I was
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: in Colorado last weekend. I don't go there thinking I'm
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: gonna shoot at one and a half year old deer.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: I'm absolutely not going to do that. And that's that's
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: just what I've chosen to do. But you gotta set
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: your expectations based off of either your experience or um,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: your experience level or like, um, the place that you are,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: you know. I think so definitely key. And you know
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: the one thing about that too, because I'll shoot a
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: little one all day long in a lot of different places.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: I gotta spread, man, And dude, I love it. You'll
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: send you'll send me pictures all the time, but like,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: you know, not not huge deer. And I can just
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: tell you're so proud of it, you know, And it
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: has to do with that work that you put in,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: you know, and like what what when it came down
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: to when you made the decision, you know, And I'm like, dude,
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: that's you can just tell, dude, you're just happy when
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: you send those pictures, you know, well and I am.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: And the thing that I know people don't believe this,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: but I don't have like a play where I could
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: just go hunt and kill those l right, Like I
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: don't have like a guaranteed place to go shoot deer
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: like I have. I have private properties I can hunt.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: I have lots of public land I go hunt, but
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: I got I've got limited amount of time. And I
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: love the experience of traveling and hunting public land. So
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: that's that's most of my hunting. And you know, you
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: know how it is, like sometimes you go into a
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: state and you're like, you know, it's the right time.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: I got three in the freezer already, Like I'm I'm
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: gonna be picky. Sometimes you just go in hungry. Sometimes
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: you go and you're like this is gonna be awesome,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: and for whatever reason, it sucks every day and you
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: can't get on anything. And then you have one start
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: walking in that you you know previous to the hunt.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: You're like, there's no way I would shoot that. And
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: then you get into a real hunting situation and that
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: deer starts walking in You're like, I want to kill
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: that buck bad, and I love, you know, and I
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: have a lot of respect for people who can go
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: out and just like stick to their guns. I'm not
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: like that, Like I'm I'm in the moment kind of guy.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: And I just like I just learned over time, Like
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: if I don't end the season with a bunch of
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: deer in the freezer, I feel like I have a failure.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Like I don't like that, Like I I would rather
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: have that than anything else at this point in my life.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: And you know, like we talked about earlier, man, like
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: you know, you go to a state like South Dakota,
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: if you can go crawl around and stock bucks, that's
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: like what's more fun? You know? And and you know
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: what's not fun is going in with that mentality. This
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: happens to a lot of first time meal deer hunters.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Is they go, I just want to go glass up
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: a good you know sixty and you know stock them.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: And I'm like, Okay, if you're on and over the
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: counter tag on public land, you might you might get
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: a chance. Like you you can find big meal deer
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: if you know what you're doing, But the odds of
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: you're making good on that one stock that week are
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: almost zero. And you might spend a ton of time
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: on the glass or driving around not really hunting because
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: you think that this is where it's gotta be, and like, hey,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: you do you but when you know how it is
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: when you go and do this stuff, like I want
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: to hunt, Like I want to go out there and
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: be with them, and I want to get my chance
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: to try to time my draw and make my shot
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: and see if I can do this ship right. And
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: you got to do the whole process to get there. Yeah,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: that's like with antelope, Like I don't know what a
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: big antalopez or whatever, you know, Like they all look
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: big to me. So We'll be driving down the road
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, I gotta do that someday. You know.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I got to try to try to do that. And
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: I have a few points. I think I got a
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: point in Wyoming, you know, but like I uh, I've
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: always said that, like when it comes to antalope especially,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: but even I think about this with like deer and
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: Elk as well, because I feel like when I'm Elk hunting,
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: I feel like I'm in in the middle of the day.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: I feel like I'm just walking around the woods just
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: being so unproductive, you know, like I'm not hunting anything,
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: you know, Like I feel like I'm not hunting, is
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: what I feel like. I feel like I'm just in
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: the mountains being a hipster, to say the least, of
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: wearing your skinny jeans. It's right, Uh, but so I
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: I but I I've always said this about anilopant man,
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: I don't really care to kill a big one. I
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: just want to make sure I'm scouting or stalking antelope
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: all day, you know what I mean. I just wanna
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: if I bust one, I want to be able to
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: like go down the road, regroup, get something to eat,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: and find some more to stalk. And I just want
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: to go. There's a bunch of them. And that's just
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: what you're saying, is like, I want to be hunting.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: I want to feel like I'm in the game. I
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: don't like walking around in the September of Colorado not
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: knowing what's going on for days on end, you know.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: So that's that's struggle for me, and that's why I like,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: that's why I don't do many all day sits. And
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: I actually did one. I did my first one in
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: a long time. Maybe maybe I don't know if I
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: did an all day last year. But I did one
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: um in Colorado last week, and uh, the magical thing
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: of deer cruising through in the middle of day did
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: not happen, and so it was. It's pretty boring. But
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: like I I, I'm more of the type that will
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: like find a way. I be sitting in the stand
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: in the morning, late morning, and instead of doing an
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: all day hunt, I would rather just like come up
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: with a good plan on my map and think, oh dear,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: you're gonna do this this afternoon, so let's go move
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: the stands. And I'd rather just break the whole thing
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: down and go find I mean, even if I got
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: to move a hundred yards or whatever, at least I
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: did something in the the middle the day. Gave me something
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: to do. And I'm I feel like I'm hunting instead
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: of just sitting there waiting on things to happen, you know. So,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: But at the same time, like I can wait in
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: a stand, I'm not they got it has to be
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: on the ground all the time. Like some of these
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: guys they you know, they don't like hunting and tree stands.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: But I try to have some patience. But the all
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: day thing is not my favorite. That's for sure. It's
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: it's tough. I mean, you gotta have some confidence, man,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: like real confidence, and you gotta you know, you gotta
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: recognize like, all right, do I believe in this because
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: it's I think it's gonna happen, or do I just
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: not want to go to a plan B and it's
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: hard man, or you know, or to not talk yourself
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: out of just going into town for lunch, Like I
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: struggled with that with all day sits for a long
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: long time. Actually, what got me over the hump was
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: dedicating myself to killing like public land long beards with
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: a bow where you're just like it's such a pain
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: in the ask to move a blind and decoys in
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: your chair and all your stuff, like if you're if
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: you're bow hunting turkeys without you know, if you're not
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: doing the gilly suit thing or whatever, Like it's a
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: freaking gear intensive, you know, it's it sucks a lot
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: of times. And so it's like you better really find
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: a good spot and write it out. And when you do,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: like dark to dark sits for turkeys, you know, on
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: those days in the spring, it's like, man, I'm sitting
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: in a tree stand for white tails for eleven hours
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: versus like sixteen hours for turkeys. It's not so bad,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: but it takes. It takes the right mindset, and it
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: takes you know, you've got to be really confident to
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: know when you should actually be pulling the plug. And
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: it's it's like that's a learned thing, you know, and
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: you have to learn yourself, right, like you said, if
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: it's something that's really not your thing, Like if you
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: learn that, okay, don't do it then, but learn how
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: to be out there and keep your time productive, because
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: that's yeah, that's important. Yeah, that's that's or your exactly right.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: Like there are people like if you you know the
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: why I told Adrenalin, guys like those guys, they do
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: it a certain way, you know, and that lends itself
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: to guys who have done it that way and had success.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: But that way that they do it is it does
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: not lend itself to guys that don't haven't done it. Like,
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: if you haven't done it that way, then and you
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: want to, you better be dedicated to the process, like
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: we said earlier, you know, because it's it's tough to
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: kill dear from the ground on public land, you know,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: all the time with a longbow or whatever like. And
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: so like all the stipulations you put on yourself, you know,
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: our challenges that you can give yourself, but they're also
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: they're also ways to either have more fun or just
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: you know, especially if you're kind of a newer hunter
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: or something, to lend yourself to something that fits your
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: style a little better, you know. And so everybody has
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: a different style. And there are guys like I gotta
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: we got a friend that is a killer man. He's
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: he kills a deer on public in East Texas, like
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: I mean every year, pretty much good deer. And he's
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: he's like the type that's like if the wind changes direction,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: just look, just turn around and look into the wind.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: You know. He's like he will sit there, you know,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: in the same spot and ride it out and kills
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: a buck like a good buck every year. Man. I mean,
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: he's a better hunter than me, I would, I would say,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: and he just that's the way he does it. And
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: and I don't. I cannot do that, you know, um
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: right now at least so and maybe maybe that's me
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: being you know, naive or inexperienced or whatever, but I
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: just feel like, you know, there are definite like styles
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: that people have or characteristics and person and personality traits
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: that people have that lend theirselves to a certain style,
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: and so you kind of gotta I gotta figure out
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: what that is. And like I said earlier, it's not
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: always fun. But um, you know, if you if you
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: you gotta balance like success and fun and so like
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: how much success do you really are you hard? After
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: you probably should have a little less fun, And if
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: you want to have the most fun, you may not
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: have quite as much success. But it's okay, like half fun,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So if that's what your
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: goal is, didn't didn't do it? You know, So those
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: things kind of work inversely, I think a little bit
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: sometimes And you you make a really interesting point to
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: the point there about the you know, if you take
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: the wait til Adrenalin guy's style or maybe a Dan
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: and Fault style, and you know you talk about your
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: own style, You've got enough experience in this to know
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: this is what I like doing, this is probably what
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna do, and this is like, this is what's
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: gonna make me the happiest. That that's like no small thing.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: So when people are trying to emulate somebody else's style.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: That's a good thing to try, like go try to
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: be Zack farembof if you want, go ahead might be
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: your thing, it might not. But the more stuff you try,
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: like your your example with the stocking antelope, like, if
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: you want to prove yourself like a real bow hunter,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: go shoot a bunch of public land antelope with your
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: bow spot and stock. Don't do it out of a blind,
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: don't do it with decoy. Just go show me that
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: you can go sneak up on those suckers. You'll learn
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: a lot about yourself. You'll learn what you're capable of
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: patients wise, you know, planning a stockwise, hunt wise, like
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: you'll learn on day three four, like if this is
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: still your thing or not, you know, there's there's a
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: lot to that. But when you start, you start getting
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: more experiences like that, you start finding out like this
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: is what I really like and this is what I
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: don't like. And I'm telling you instead of just leaning
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: into what's easy, if you lean into what you like,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: you'll work harder at it and you'll kill more dear,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: and so you take you know, your your examples with
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: the white tail Agennalin guys, they're they're doing what they're
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: good at. They've they like home dase skill like Dan
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: in fall hunting that you know buckbeds, he's home that
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: skill over you know, decades. That's important to acknowledge. Like
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: you could go out and try that. You might be successful,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: you might not, but it might be like the most
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: amazing thing to you. Or you might go I don't
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: like this. I don't want to go walk through the
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: swamps and scout for these beds. I want to go
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: do something else. And when you learn that about yourself,
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: you even though you'll be going away from a successful
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: strategy for some people, you'll be finding something that's better
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: for you. And man, like you want a crash course
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: in this stuff, go go figure out a way to
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: hunt new places like now, and I'm not even talking
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: just necessarily out of state. Like your your point about
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: East Texas, it's such a good one, right, Like you're
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: talking about how hard it is. And then you've got
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: a guy out there who's going to kill big ones.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: What's his secret? Like what's he doing? And then like
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: you think about somebody in Florida. So like you mentioned Louisiana,
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: you know we northern Wisconsin. You can find places close
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: to you that are going to be different than what
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: you're used to, and it's gonna be shitty at first,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: like it's not gonna be as much fun. But if
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: you start the scouting process and you start the process
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: of figuring this stuff out, it'll probably get fun and
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: it will probably show you ways where you can enjoy
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: the work and the discipline in the in the process
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: much more, even though it might not seem that appealing.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: Like I just just as an example, I'm I'm like
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: obsessed with northern Wisconsin because it kicks my ass. I
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: hate it. I I love it, and I hate it
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: right Like it's I got a weird relationship with that place,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Like I'm going to kill big ones there at some point,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: and I spend more time scouting there in the winter,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: and it's like could become this thing that just drives me,
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: like I don't feel good at this stuff when I'm there,
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: and I don't like that feeling, but I love the
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: process of just being like, Okay, well, I know it's
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: gonna be different this year because there's gonna be you know,
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: a new wolf pack somewhere. There's gonna be a new
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: four wheeler trail somewhere there's gonna be something going on
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: that changes things for me and I have to start
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: over over. But it teaches me like even though you
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: kind of like outwardly hate this, like you keep coming
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: back for a reason. Like it's like I have a
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: bad relationship, you know, like you know this my partner sucks.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: But I'm just I'm gonna keep giving it another shot.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: And you just you learn about yourself that way. And
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: like you said before, if you go do that stuff,
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: like when you guys are hunting East Texas, man, I
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: bet it's pretty easy to go appreciate South Dakota, Like
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: I bet it's pretty easy to appreciate a lease and
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: freaking Kansas after you're hunting that stuff. That's important. Yeah, man,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: that's and that's a you make a good really some
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: really good points. But like there, um, you know, like
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: I said, pretty much everywhere you can find something new
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: pretty close to you. So I mean for us, I
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: think about we're about seventy miles east of Dallas right here,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: and so if we were hunting like real close to home. Um,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: we have a certain type of habitats Postoke, you know,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: old prairie or whatever, and if we go basically from here,
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: if we go like twenty miles to the west, we
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: start turning into uh a little bit more black soil
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: um and shorter trees, less less oaks, more locust trees, hackberries,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: stuff like that. And then you work in the Dallas
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: and there's obviously this massive concrete jungle there and when
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: you get around that, it's mesquite trees and it's uh
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: more red dirt and stuff like that. And so like
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: that's two hours from us. You know, if you go
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: to the east twenty miles, we've got pine trees and
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: it's the start of literally the south, you know what
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: I mean, it's pine tree country. And um, I think
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: that that um kind of thing happens all over America.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: I would assume, maybe not necessarily twenty miles, but you know,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: you could drive an hour and find bluffs or find
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: flat farmland, or you know, find a river bottom country
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: or whatever you know, And so, um, it doesn't it
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: don't have to You don't have to go from Texas
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: south Dakota to challenge yourself with a new type of
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: deal and to give yourself an opportunity to find out
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: what you enjoy the most, you know, and you can
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: take that stuff and related across the country. So if
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: you end up like for us, if we end up
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: like finding success in the river bottoms and really enjoying
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: that here in East Texas, I mean I can go
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: a lot of places and find river bottom type habitat
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: you know, I mean it's it's weird, but like I
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: what kind of looks like where we live. It's you know,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: it's just a little bit bigger oaks, um and you know,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: lots of creeks and drawls and stuff, you know, and
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: so um, you can kind of take that and go
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: across the country. And also one thing that Casey always
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: talks about is that you know, he says, dear do
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: dear things, and so like their characteristics and habits that
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: deer have, that are those characteristics and habits because they're dear,
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: not because of where they live. And so you take
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: those and apply them across the country. And we try
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: to do that. That's I think been a big kind
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: of breakthrough of mind just to help me with finding
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: success and take take those things and go and understand.
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: You know, for instance, just a quick little example, if
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: you're falling a fence and the top string uh SAgs
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: down in one little section of that fence a deer,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: the deer going across there, if that's the only, if
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: that's the lowest by six inch six inches place in
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: three yard stretch or whatever, you know, it's it's it's
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: fairly simple. Um. It sounds like, you know whatever. But
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: those are the things that you can carry that you
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: find out, um while you're hunting, that you can carry
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: across the country and use to your advantage. You know, man,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: that's that's such a good point. And one of the
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: things I would say on that is, not only do
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: you do you learn that's true when you go hunt
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: a lot of different stuff. You see the similarities. You
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: also realize that we care a lot of baggage with
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: us that's not true about our deer. And I'll use
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: this as an example. My one of my really good buddies.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: I met him tournament fishing. We hunt together a lot.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: He's a great guy. And I took one of my
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: daughters to Lake Malax here in Minnesota. Malax is like
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: world renowned for smallmouth right it's it's it's incredible. It
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: gets a lot of pressure crystal clear, but the bass
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: are freaking awesome. And it was supposed to be dead calm,
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: which is the reason I went there, because it's this huge,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: twenty mile wide bowl and if it's windy, it sucks bad.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: It sucks way too much for my boat. Well, we
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: got there and it was really windy right at sunrise,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, like, we're gonna go just try
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: this anyway. And I got out there and it was
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: one of those things where I was like having trouble
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: control on my boat with the trolling motor, and so
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: I'm standing on that and I grabbed a rod that
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: had a swimming jag on it and threw it out
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: there and caught a small mouth right away, totally by accident,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: and so I started throwing that and they were just
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: on this wind beating shore. They were eating something that
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: looks like a moving minnow or a crayfish like, And
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: in my head, I'm like, this is malax You gotta
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: throw a little stuff and floral line and you gotta
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: do these these Malaxi things. And I was talking to
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: my buddy about it and he's like, what did you
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: catch him on today? I'm like, I caught him on
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: a top water and I caught him on a swimming
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: jig just like I do on the Mississippi River and
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: all these other lakes. And he's like, you caught malax
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: mamoth on a swimming jig. I was like, yeah, I
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: don't know. I guess they're just small mouth like but
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: in in my head, you know, I'm like these these
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: fish needs something different. And you know, you see this
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: with you hear this a lot with like Southern turkeys
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: or white tails and certainly you know, like Southern turkeys
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: and example like oh, you're never gonna call in an
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: Alabama turkey, Like, well their turkeys, right, like are you sure?
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: Like are you sure you're gonna stick to that statement? Like, well,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: but we bring in this stuff. And the more you
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: travel and the more you hunt different spots, you realize like, Okay,
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: some of these things I've been led to believe, they're
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: not doing me any good. They're holding me back. And
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: you know, if you take Casey's mindset and you go, yeah, dear,
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: do what dear do? Okay, Well, dear lay down where
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: deer to lay down? They walk where they walk, they
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: eat where they eat, They try to have sex where
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: they try to have sex. Like, you take these things
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: and you go Okay, this is this is ubiquitous. Man.
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: This goes from East Texas up to Canada and wherever else.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: And you can use those things like you can use
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: all that stuff to make a good plan and anything
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: you bring with you that's like, well, the deer don't
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: do this, or they're not gonna move on a full moon,
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: or they're not gonna do this. That's holding you back.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: And I think we gotta be real careful about that stuff.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, man, for sure, that's uh, like we see, uh,
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: we we went we did some uh we did this
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: series called map Scout Challenge where we um and we
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: started out getting spots from people. They would send us
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: a spot that they would never go see and that
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: they wanted to see, and so we said, we'll go
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: video and show you what's there, you know whatever. So
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: we went to Michigan this past summer and did a
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: video up there, and you know, of course you got
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: you got there. You know, I'm sure there's there's a
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: lot of truth to this, but the Michigan people are
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: definitely the types that think that their deer hunting is
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: the hardest in the world, you know, so uh, sorry, Mark,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: if you're listening, Uh, but they do, you know, and
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: so like we you know, we we went up there
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: and hung a camera on public land and found like
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: some good bucks. We had a buck the first night
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: that like, you know, nice solid eight or whatever, probably
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: hundred thirty plus inch ten point on there at some point,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: like good dear, you know, and literally this is sixty
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: yards off the road. I mean, so it's so close
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: to the road. Like we were so happy because they
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: were like, yes, we're getting rid of some of these
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: stereotypes for Michigan people. But you know, at the same time,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: you know, we're it's all in good fun. But like
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: there were guys that were definitely like, oh, but you
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: could never kill them. You've gotta be thirty ft high,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: you know, and this and that, and they're always looking up,
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: you know, and these things that people like you said
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: that they get into their minds, you know, and um,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: you know think that oh those deer look up. You know,
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: it's like, man, not really, it's something in that habitat
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: or something that allows them to see better into the
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: trees or you know whatever. It's not. Deer don't walk
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: around looking up, you know what I mean, they just don't.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: That's that's not what they do. I mean they there
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: there are places in the country that get more pressure.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Um for sure. But dude, how many times has that
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: deer actually been in close range of a human seen
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: it and had to run off? Um? Probably not like
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: a ton. And does it even associate that with a
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: true danger you know? Or is it just an instinctual
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: thing that a deer does when it sees something move
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: that's an object that doesn't look like a deer, you
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: know what I mean. I've seen deer run away from cows.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: You know, the cow is not gonna harm a dear,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: So you know that, like you're you're nailing it for sure. Man.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: It's it's like we have to kind of have that
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: open mind like we talked about earlier. We're talking about
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: hunting with a partner, Right, You've got to have an
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: open mind and understand that you don't know everything. But
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: there are things that you can know about deer. Like
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: you said, they do they breed in a certain area
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: or a certain way at certain time of year, and um,
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: there are biological things that we can think about when
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: it comes to that. Also, U the fact that they
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: there's only so much cold weather a deer can take
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: doesn't matter where it is, but it is relative, right,
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: you know. I mean I I skinned out my buck
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: from here at home last year, and it felt like
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: I was skinning a rabbit compared to the other deer
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: I had shot that year, because I shot Illinois bug
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: in the South Dakota buck, you know, and it just
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: has thinner skin. But you know, those those cold temps
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: are relative. So like what's the average temp in your area? Well,
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: if it's below average temps that week, you know that
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: deer's gonna be moving more, it's gonna keep eat food
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: more um to keep it warm, you know. And so
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: those are things that you can know, and most of them,
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: I would say probably have to do with like the
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: biology of a deer. So you know, it's good to
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: get to know, like how do dear see? What is
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: their vision? Like, you know, talk to Carl Miller about
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: that one time on our podcast, and you know, how
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: does the dear um? You know, like what what time?
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: What's the peak breeding? You know, and and is that
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: you know for a lot of guys, like what is that?
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: How does that compare to the peak movement? And these
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: things you know, and so and then it gets finer
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: and finer detailed, like we talked about earlier. But you
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: can always take across the country the fact that do
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: you like to go um in fairly straight lines when
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: they go places, you know, and they're gonna take easy paths,
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: um when they can do that, UM, like said, they're
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: gonna they're The cold factor is something you know at
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: the time of year when it comes to you know,
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: um breeding and stuff like that. Like you mentioned, so
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: all those things really um are biological things you can
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: kind of carry across the country. Man, it's a white
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: tailed deer, you know. Yeah, well, and I was I
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: want to back up a second when you when you
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: talk about deer looking up. You know, one of the
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: things that I noticed when I started hunting out west,
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: they didn't look up like it was. It was amazing.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: I was like, these things are stupid, Like I'm ten
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: feet up in a little tree and then you know,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: like where I hunt in northern Wisconsin, they look up
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: a lot. And I think it's just a pressure thing.
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: But we have to be really careful. And you know,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: if you say, like, well you can't kill them on
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: a tree, They're gonna see every time like no, you
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: It's not like an infallible thing, like they you can
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: kill these deer. And so I always look at this
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: like I almost expect to get busted over there in Wisconsin.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: If I haven't done a really good job of facing
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: away from where I expect them to come, and if
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: I haven't really really done a good job, I'm probably
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: in a little bit of trouble. But I still kill
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: a fair amount of deer that bust me drawn and
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: it's too late for him. And so we kind of
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: use this stuff as an excuse to not do it right,
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: like to not get in a tree or you know,
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: like if you think, well, I gotta get in thirty
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: feet in a tree otherwise I had to get busted, Like, man,
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: I bet there's another answer to that, Like I bet
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: that's not the only way to beat them. And okay,
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: so can you sit on the ground and build a
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: natural ground blind and you know, draws, you're coming up
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: on your knees. There's there's ways around this stuff. But
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: the things we believe as like always a never you know,
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: we've heard that a lot like that holds us back,
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: and you kind of you kind of just shatter those
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: things the more you go spend time out there looking
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: for new opportunities because you go, man, in my head,
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: I was like, there's no way I'm gonna kill a
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: big buck this way, and like, like just as an example,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: you know, I've I've killed a fair amount of deer
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: from the ground, but the first when I first dedicated
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: myself to I'm like, I'm gonna go kill a public
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: land buck. I'm gonna kill big one. I went out
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: to North Dakota and I was like, I'm gonna get
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: in a tree stand on the river. I'm gonna shoot
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: on when he walks by. And the buck that I
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: had most patterned from scouting, I went in there, and
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: the trees that I was gonna sit in where like
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: fifteen times too big. There were these giant cotton woods,
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: you know, So I was like, oh, shoot, Like what
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: am I gonna do? And I'm like, I'm just gonna
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: sit on the ground behind this tree and shoot him
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: when he walks past. And That's what I did. And
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: I was like this is stupid, Like this is this
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: is not you know. There were times of like moments
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: of like pure panic because I'm like, I know these
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: bucks are gonna come down here and cross and there's
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: no way I can get up there where I would
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: normally do this, So what do you do? And it's like,
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: I don't know, they can't see through trees and he's
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: still going to be twenty yards away. Like just there.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: There are other answers to these problems, but we kind
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: of get it in our head like we have to
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: do this or our deer are always gonna do that,
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: or there's no way this is gonna work. And the
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: more experience you get out there, the more you realize
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: that there's a lot of gray area going on here,
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: Like there's a lot of things we can get away with. Yeah,
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: that's and I should have probably been more clear, like
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: we we get picked off a lot in these Texas,
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: so you know, as opposed to you know, Kansas or whatever,
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: South Dakota. You know, like we get picked off in
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: these Texas a lot. And so I think that's the
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: point to make, is that it's it's if it's pressure dependent,
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: you know, um, you know kind of how high strung
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: are those deer, you know, how light in the season
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: is it, and those those are kind factors that you
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: have to think about. Um. But like you said, like
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: you gotta be creative and you gotta think of some
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: way to get it around that. You know. It's uh.
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: Um in Colorado this past week, UM, I kind of
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: worked in over the course of a few days. We
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: were hunting really far back, so it was it was tough.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: It was a tough hunt, and we're hunting this area.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: I started to really narrow down where I needed to be.
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: But um, the deer were on this creek system and
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: the trees I wanted. I like killing deer out of
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: trees because I just think, I just think I could
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: see better. I can figure out what they're doing better
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: from a tree because I can see them at two
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: yards doing this and go, oh, I need to move
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: over there. If I was from the ground, I might
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: not even see a deer that that evening or whatever.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: So like I learned from the tree usually and so
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: and I like to kill them because I feel like
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: I can get drawn better from the trees and without
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: getting seen in most cases. And so we were starting
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: to narrow narrow down to like where we actually need
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: to be, which tree we actually need to be in
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: in uh, the closest trail that I thought was so
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: like basically on the south side of me was where
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: I thought the majority of that your movement would be.
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: But I did have trails on the north side of me,
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: but they were, you know, all within thirty yards. They
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: were close, and I thought the better trails were gonna
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: be on the south side, and they were, but the
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: closest one was forty five yards, and I was like, oh,
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: I just do not want to take that shot, you know,
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: it's just so far. And so but I was prepping
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: myself mentally for like what that looks like. I don't
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: want to shoot a here it's on edge at forty
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: five Like he needs to be calm and smelling, you know,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: smelling something on that trail or whatever. And so I'm
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: just kind of working through all this thing and thinking
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: like how can I how can I make this work better?
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: And um, you start to like, really what it came
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: down to is I went in there with this idea
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: that the wind needed to be a certain direction for
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: me to hunt that tree, and really figured out that
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: it was kind of the opposite direction that worked best
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: for for the situation, because um, I was able to
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: blow my wind, like I was able to get shots
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: on deer um down wind of me before they got
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: to my wind, whereas I was just thinking I didn't
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: want to blow it on those trails at all. And so,
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: you know, long story short, like, sometimes you have to,
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: like you said, keep your mind open, think about things
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: that you go in. Try to narrow down into the
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: deer's you know, as a bow hunter, you gotta try
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: to narrow down into you know, the deer's lap pretty much.
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: And then you know, once you get to the spot
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: where you think you can counter deer, like how do
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: you how do you like, what can you create that
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: can get you drawn? You know what I mean? How
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: can you get drawn? Because that's the moment of truth.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: It almost always boils down to I mean, if you're
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: if you're hunting, and you're a pretty decent hunter, it
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: really just always almost seems to boil down to like
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: can you get drawn without getting seen? And um, we
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: have to be creative a lot because I have to
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: hang two stands a lot of times, you know, for
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: one for the cameraman as well, and so like we
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: get sometimes we're hunting some pretty small trees and I'm like, Okay,
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: where do I put that platform? Like how do I
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: what side of the tree? You know, Like how do
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: I keep my broad heads? From from beating right in
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: his face while I'm sitting there hanging on the tree
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: or whatever, you know, and all these things. So, um,
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: we spend a lot of time doing that. But you're
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: you're right, like when it comes down to uh, getting drawn,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: there's a way. You just have to figure it out,
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: you know. And sometimes it's using a big tree from
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: the ground or whatever it might be. And we we
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: did a lot of different things. We hunted from the
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: ground while we're out there and almost killed a deer
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: from the ground. So, you know, being open mind is big,
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: big key man. When you when you have another person
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: with you, you really figure out, well, you figure out
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: a couple of things, like you figure out the best
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: way to do stuff because you have to because it's
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: way hard, and you figure out where you're just willing
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: to make some concessions, you know. And I did that,
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: you know, filming for this one week in November series. Man,
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: I it was a good reminder of why I hadn't
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: filmed for a long time, because it's just it's just tough.
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: But it forces you to think, like, Okay, if I'm
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: here for my best shot, where do I put him
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: to not get me busted? Or like it's it takes
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: a lot of consideration and you realize, like when let
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: me tell you this story. So, well, my cameraman for
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: that shoot showed up the backpack he had to bring
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: for our hunt. You could have put like a pretty
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: decent sized adult man's body in there. I think I
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: looked at that pack and I was like, is that
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: like your luggage and he's like, no, this is my
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: camera pack. And it was black. So I'm like and
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: so and I was like, man, we're sitting all day
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: and he's like, yeah, I brought my sheep hunting pants.
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: Well they're like puffy, And I said, bro, we're not
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: rifle hunting here, man, We're this is close range stuff,
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: and so you just go. I I was positive. I
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: talked to my buddy Eric about this. I was like,
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: that pack is gonna get us busted. I don't know
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: how many times, but it's gonna happen. And I don't
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: know if it actually did. And I was confident of it.
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: And what what I realized, like, Okay, we had some
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: pretty good setups obviously, but I was probably given the
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: deer a little bit too much credit. Like I was
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: probably like, man, this is there you know, because you
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: get so cautious with this stuff and like I would
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: never bring that into a tree, Like if you show
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: that to me, I would be like, you couldn't pay
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: me to hunt with that and so and I have
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: my mind made up like that's gonna cost us And
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: I don't know if it actually ever did. I know
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: having a cameraman with me cost me a couple of opportunities,
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: but it was like just run of the mill stuff
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: that happens filming. It wasn't because of that. And it
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: kind of was like I was kind of like, man,
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: I got that one wrong, Like I was. I was
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: sure that sucker was gonna cost us and I don't
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: think it it, but you know, it's just it's one
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: of those things like again I brought something to the
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: table as far as like maybe given the deer a
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: little bit too much credit, and you know, would that
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: have held me back any other way? I don't know,
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: But it's a it's a teachable moment regardless because because
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: you were wrong, I was wrong, that's right. And like
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: Casey loves he Casey is really specific, like and this
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: is good. He always tries to think about what he
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: says and what it actually means. Because in the South
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: we have all these sayings and sometimes I think they
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: might be called atoms or something, but like, you know,
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: like they had these sayings and um, you know, people
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: have set them for generations and now like people saying
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: without even thinking what does that actually mean? You know,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: and like some there are sayings that like people you
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: know don't really understand that, like you know, this is
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: actually a dirty saying and I'm saying this to my
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: preacher or something, you know, like you know, just you
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: haven't thought about that that's the way it was originally
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: intended or whatever. You know, it's just become this thing
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: that you say in a certain situation. And he's really
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: really specific about you know, saying things correctly and so um.
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: Like one of the sayings that you see on social
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: media a lot is um the game of cat and
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: mouse when talking about a deer, and he's like, it's
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: not the way it happens. It's not cat and the
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: deer is you know, or or another one is the
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: deer outsmarted me, and Casey would rather you say that
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: the deer is smarter than you, but he didn't out
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: smart you, like you know, so um like but with
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: the cat and mouse thing, he's like, you know, the
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: the cat and mouse thing is like the Tom and
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: Jerry idea that like the mouse is is uh, you
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: know actively almost like venge like with vengefulness coming you know,
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: coming at the cat or whatever and like staying keeping
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: from getting killed by the cat. Where the deer in
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: most cases doesn't have a who that he's being hunted,
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: right like, even even when a deer um is wise
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: to a hunter that is hunting it in in any
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: random moment, he doesn't know that he's being hunted. He's instinctual.
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: And so when he smells something or like if he
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: like he's habitual too, so like if he smelled something
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: in a certain area when he came in last time,
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: when he goes back to that area later on, he's
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: gonna he may circle down wind or jay hook or
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: whatever they call it, you know, to try to catch
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: that thing. But it's only because it's only it's very instinctual.
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: Like you said, you can give the deer too much credit,
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: and being the cat and mouse thing drives him crazy
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: because he thinks it's you know, not that you want
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: to discredit the deer. Because we love the deer. We
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: think they're awesome, they're super creatures you know or whatever.
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: But um, he's like he's always so specific about that
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: and thinking like the deer is the deer is reactive
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: to its environment. It's not like you know, trying to
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: uh get you know, Tom to stick his you know,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: tail out the mousehole and then smash it with a
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: hammer or whatever. You know. So he always talked about that.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: It's so funny, you know. Yeah I did not. That's
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: not where I thought you were going with that. Uh yeah,
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: I mean they're out there. They're out there, very aware
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: that there's potential danger, and they're quick to react to it.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: But it's you know, they're also out there living their
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: life most of the year without us having anything to
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: do with them. You know. Um, Tyler, we are. We
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: have gone on for a long time here, buddy. We
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: gotta wrap this up. Uh, It's always so much fun
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: to chat with you. Man. Where where can everybody find

- 1:48:43Speaker 1: big time. And I have a lot of respect for
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: you man. I know you know that because we text
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: a lot, especially in September when I'm struggling early season.
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: You're giving me all kinds of information and stuff. I'm
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: like a deer hunting therapist for early September hunters. That's right,
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: that's right. And we we love you, man, we really
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: and I and Casey and I both do especially we
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: really appreciate and respect you man, and appreciate the opportunity
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: to come on here and and uh talk for a
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: little bit, man. And it is always fun and um,
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: you know, if somebody's interested in checking out more what
