- 1:08Just just a reminder to all the fans that are listening in live

- 1:25Episode 36, we are post convention.
- 1:30We will be talking some about of our experiences over the past
- 1:33week and then we'll move into some mini mail survey stuff that
- 1:38would be coming up starting Friday.
- 1:43So for the one person who didn't make it to convention, how was
- 1:47your week, Josh? My week was good.
- 1:57Little porn, because even though I had a module list of things I
- 2:03wanted or needed to get accomplished, I think I have one
- 2:07thing frost off and that's only 50%.
- 2:12So you wasted your time a week, OK?
- 2:14Yep. And but I can't imagine how you
- 2:20guys. After Friday, just the waiting
- 2:28in between hearing election results from on Facebook and you
- 2:34guys updating, the anticipation was just getting to me.
- 2:41But luckily this week is a short week I planning when I put in.
- 2:48I plan to not be home until last night.
- 2:52So I took tomorrow off. Also this is, you know this is
- 2:56going to be a certain to be off Monday expecting not coming to
- 3:01home until later last night or today.
- 3:06Work Tuesday, Wednesday, I'm off Thursday.
- 3:08Go work Friday and then I'm off next Saturday for me and my wife
- 3:11to go do something that we planned on doing all.
- 3:15Right. I'm going to move on to our
- 3:17first timer, James. But first, let me tell you about
- 3:20my week. I did not run this year.
- 3:23I was not a delegate. I only made it up by by the end
- 3:28of convention. I was still too down in the
- 3:30alternate list. But I did campaign for Bill.
- 3:34I walked caucus with him. It was it was a good, I don't
- 3:40know if, say, it was a good convention, but every convention
- 3:42is good in its own ways. Elections could have gone a
- 3:47little better, but you know. We're going to put it that way.
- 3:51But go ahead, James, since this was your first convention ever,
- 3:54why don't you give us a quick rundown of your week?
- 3:59So I got up into Grand Rapids on Sunday because I live in
- 4:05Michigan. It was not that far of a drive,
- 4:07but I knew I wanted to be in there to be ready to start
- 4:10things on Monday and got to run into Kristen and Bill when I got
- 4:16there and ran into some fans of the podcast, they're like, I
- 4:22recognize that voice and it's Kristen's voice.
- 4:25They were recognizing the only female on the podcast, of
- 4:27course, but we always welcome more people want to join in with
- 4:32us. We don't.
- 4:33We don't discriminate. But that was quite interesting.
- 4:38I'm not used to people going, I know you, I've listened to you,
- 4:41I've heard you and things like that.
- 4:42It was really an amazing experience.
- 4:45Monday, of course, was the start of all the proceedings and
- 4:49getting signed in and things like that, and you start the
- 4:52whole process through that course.
- 4:54Tuesday was the most fun I had at the convention, which was
- 4:59when Mr. Postmaster Louis Dejoy got on stage and blue smoke ups
- 5:06everybody's backside about his plans to move a bunch of
- 5:09carriers to the PD&C as well as mail volume being down, how he
- 5:13wants to increase package volume for the Postal Service and
- 5:17things like that. And then he opened it up to
- 5:20questions and that was his mistake.
- 5:25The first person asked him a question and I was the 2nd up.
- 5:28And my question to him was, you talk about spreadsheets and
- 5:31things like that. So why don't you explain to me
- 5:34how you're saving money by taking one truck off the road
- 5:36and pulling all these Llv's into these PD and C's, which is going
- 5:41to increase fuel cost and wear and tear on the vehicles.
- 5:45And then how are you going to compensate the carriers who have
- 5:48to do 48 miles an hour from the PD&C to the third of their route
- 5:52when they're on roads that are 25 and 35 miles an hour most of
- 5:55the way back to their normal route?
- 5:57And he couldn't answer that question.
- 5:59He kind of went into a non answer style nonsensical
- 6:04commentary about it. And then more and more, Carriers
- 6:08kept laying into him about how he's not right and how Carrier
- 6:13don't trust management. And eventually it got to the
- 6:16point where he called Carriers lives and stormed off the stage
- 6:22like a child, and then later had to issue basically a written
- 6:27policy. It's not an apology, and it was
- 6:31just a big mess. But it was hilarious to watch
- 6:33our postmaster general storm off the stage like a little child.
- 6:37But then Wednesday it got a little more interesting.
- 6:43And then Thursday we had caucus, and I decided that I wasn't
- 6:46going to let a lot of physicians run unopposed.
- 6:51So I decided to be, I don't know, see or down or whatever.
- 6:56But I decided to step up and run for director of sewer Operations
- 6:59because I believed that that position is the most vital to
- 7:04the union as a whole. And with all the fans we have
- 7:07backing, I figured that helping the Stewart system to help our
- 7:11carriers would be the best question.
- 7:13And so I had to go around all the caucuses great questions by
- 7:17the people who asked them after I got done with my speeches.
- 7:19Of course the hardest caucus you could ever go in front of is
- 7:22your own state, because those people know you the best.
- 7:25And but overall, it was really nice to actually get those
- 7:30questions and answer the questions.
- 7:32And I really didn't have to think of the answers because
- 7:35it's a lot easier to just stand there and tell the truth than it
- 7:38is to try and come up with a lie.
- 7:40And a lot of the questions were the same across all the
- 7:42caucuses. So that means either one or two
- 7:45things. They either all had the same
- 7:47questions or they were trying to see if I'd give a different
- 7:49answer in each caucus. So I'd rather just tell the
- 7:52truth than try and be asked my way through it.
- 7:58So overall that was nice. And then Friday, Thursday,
- 8:02during the day, we were going through all the resolutions that
- 8:04come through the state and Friday the same as well as
- 8:08voting. And I was impressed to receive
- 8:11124 votes out of almost. It was 1152 total votes
- 8:18possible. So that means when I was up
- 8:21there and I was making my speeches to everybody, I
- 8:23convinced 123 people to vote for me because 124th what was my
- 8:28own. But that still means that even
- 8:32though I lost this election, a lot of a lot of people did
- 8:36believe in what I was saying, what I was, what my mission was
- 8:41and my passion was. So I really want to thank every
- 8:43single one of those people thanked me for stepping up to do
- 8:46that. So I really wanted to put that
- 8:48out there that they mean a lot. Also to give credit to Bill and
- 8:52Kristen here on the podcast for helping me learn all this stuff
- 8:55that I had to do, being it was my first time and I've ever done
- 8:58it and you know all the other people that had supported me
- 9:03through this whole process. So it was really nice to go
- 9:05through. And then after the events on
- 9:08Friday, I left Grand Rapids and came back home so I could go to
- 9:14the Dream Cruise on a Saturday and meet Jay Leno.
- 9:17That was really nice. So other than that, that was my
- 9:21week. Now Monday I go back to my
- 9:22route. All right, Bill, it's all yours.
- 9:32Get ready, Chris. Another interesting convention,
- 9:40you know. And James forgot to thank Google
- 9:43for knowing how to tie a tie. He looks spiffy in his outfit,
- 9:50you know, very nicely presented himself.
- 9:53And hats off to James for walking caucus night on his own
- 9:57first time. And I wasn't there.
- 10:01But I can tell you he answered every question as best as he
- 10:04could. Intelligently, politely,
- 10:07respectfully. And I'm so proud of you for
- 10:10stepping up on such short notice and do a wonderful job.
- 10:14I got a. What was her dawn?
- 10:17Was her name Kristen, the one that helped us with the Rice
- 10:22Krispie bars and all? Yeah.
- 10:26And I, you know, I, I, I can't believe the the support that
- 10:29Kristin just draws upon to help us do all we had to do for
- 10:33caucus night, Manning the booze, you know, spreading the word.
- 10:37I felt like a like a rock star because people recognized us.
- 10:40So it's so easily by our voices, you know?
- 10:44I'm now known as the bill. You're the bill.
- 10:47Yes I am. And I, you know just I'd love
- 10:53the support we got. I'm.
- 10:54I'm sorry it didn't translate into enough votes to win.
- 10:57But hey you know made a good showing and you know several
- 11:03people said you know go for vice president or committee.
- 11:06Well, vice President, I didn't want to because Candace was
- 11:08running and executive committee person.
- 11:13It's just not my Forte. You know I I'm an alpha I I need
- 11:18to be out front leading and I have to believe in the leaders
- 11:22above me that to be you know executive committee person too.
- 11:26So you know I made the decision not to enter those races and we
- 11:33had a a good time working our asses off doing resolutions till
- 11:3911:00 at night. You know people, you know, it's
- 11:41a big party. We didn't let our hair down,
- 11:44figuratively for me, until after caucus night was over.
- 11:49Then the rest was in the hands of the delegates.
- 11:52So I want to thank everybody that that voted for us, you
- 11:57know, wished us well and you know, next year's the New Year
- 12:02and maybe we can finally get some change into effect after
- 12:06another two more mini mail surveys and MOU's and everything
- 12:10else that they're going to be throwing at us.
- 12:14Yeah. Plus, we're going into contract
- 12:15negotiations. Yeah, that'll be interesting.
- 12:22But no, I'm going to give a quick rundown of the election
- 12:29votes, just so everybody's aware I have it here.
- 12:34I did, I had, I had actually had a new experience.
- 12:37This was my fourth national. Like I said, pre show.
- 12:41I unfortunately did not get upgraded to a delegate this time
- 12:44around. Again, let's hope I can garnish
- 12:47more votes next year to be a delegate.
- 12:50However, I I had the the honor of going in and observing the
- 13:00ballot counting for the President election.
- 13:04That is a side of convention I have never seen before as I have
- 13:08not been involved in teller committees or anything like that
- 13:11in the past. I did get to go observe.
- 13:14Basically what that means is you sit in a chair, you keep your
- 13:17mouth shut and you just sit and watch.
- 13:19That's all you can do. And but like I said, that was a
- 13:22totally different side of convention that I have never
- 13:25seen before. I did get to experience that it
- 13:29is really hard to come back out and go back to your seat.
- 13:33With a straight face, I am not a poker player, that is for sure.
- 13:38So a quick rundowns for those of you who may not have seen it on
- 13:43social media if you're not involved.
- 13:47President Election 11150 ballots for casted.
- 13:51Yeah, to have a minimum of 576 to take the win.
- 13:56President of 894 votes to go to Don Mastin.
- 14:01Bill to get 251. There were five spoiled ballots.
- 14:05What a or spoiled or illegal ballot means either it's blank.
- 14:09They wrote an incorrect name on there.
- 14:14More than one name. Anything like that.
- 14:16That is not a legal vote. You can't read it.
- 14:22Yeah, if you can't read it. You know you you make smiley
- 14:26faces on there you write on it other outside of yeah that's or
- 14:30nothing at all. Vice president was 11152 ballots
- 14:38with they had to have 577 to win.
- 14:41There were three illegal ballots for the Vice President position.
- 14:46865 votes went to Patrick Pitts and 284 Decandice Priest.
- 14:54Secretary, Treasurer and Department of Labor operations
- 14:57went unopposed, so they were unanimously in at the gavel at
- 15:03the podium there. Stewart operations 11152 were
- 15:08casted. He needed a 577 to win.
- 15:11There were four illegal ballots. 1024 for Shirley Baffa and 124
- 15:19for James are very young. Executive committee man, because
- 15:24you do get a few extra ones in there.
- 15:26Those tend to take a couple votes.
- 15:28The first round was 11150 votes casted.
- 15:34You needed 576 to win. There were two illegals at that
- 15:40point. It went back up because the most
- 15:44votes were garnered were 381. And so that was Nick Kirby.
- 15:50Ricketts had the 381, Nikki Phillips 380M, Marola 141, Todd
- 15:56Floyd 178, and Candace Priest 68.
- 16:00Candace and Mike then dropped out for the next round and then
- 16:07for the 2nd rounds again. It was 1152.
- 16:11You needed 577. We had Kirby with 556, Nikki
- 16:16with 453 and Todd with 141 at that point Todd with Drew.
- 16:22So it was down to Kirby and Nikki 11521 Illegal ballot 577
- 16:29needed to win. Kirby was 697, Nikki with 454
- 16:34and because Patrick Pitts had a one year unexpired term.
- 16:43When he accepted the one the presidential election he then
- 16:47resigned. So that opened up a one year
- 16:49executive committeeman position, unexpired term.
- 16:53Nikki Phillips, Mike Marola, Todd Floyd and Monty Hartshorn
- 16:59names then went in. So for the first round we had
- 17:01eleven 52577 needed for illegal ballots.
- 17:06Nikki had 562. Mike had 229.
- 17:10Money 78 and tied tied Todd excuse me, 279 excuse me.
- 17:17Money had 78. OK And so then we went to a
- 17:20second vote. 1150 were casted. There was absolutely no illegal
- 17:25ballots in this one needed 576 to win.
- 17:29Nikki had 730. Mike had 169 and Todd had 251.
- 17:34So Nikki went back to the. Nikki was elected to that one
- 17:38year unexpired term. So our brand new person on the
- 17:43board for this year was Mr. Kirby Ricketts as a four year
- 17:48Executive Committeeman. So that's your election, just to
- 17:53correct. You.
- 17:54It was Patrick's pitch was for vice president, not president.
- 17:58Yeah, I thought I said Vice president at the beginning.
- 18:00Oh, you said presidential position.
- 18:03Yeah, OK. Excuse me, Patrick Pitts, Vice
- 18:06President. When he was elected Vice
- 18:07President, he had the one year unexpired executive committee
- 18:10position, which then went up for election.
- 18:13I stand corrected. I'm sorry.
- 18:15Supposed to be We don't want to get any more fan mail.
- 18:20And as we say, we correct our mistakes.
- 18:23Yes. So as it stands, for our 2023
- 18:27Executive National Board, this year we have Don Mastin as
- 18:31President. Vice President Patrick Pitts,
- 18:35Secretary Treasurer, Tommy Turner, Director of Labor
- 18:37Relations is Bridget Boziak, Director of Stewart operation.
- 18:42Shirley Baffa, our Executive Committeeman, our new one is
- 18:45Kirby Ricketts and Nikki Phillips stepped one for the one
- 18:51year unexpired term. And then of course we still have
- 18:54Jeanette Dwyer and John Adams that are still serving their.
- 19:00On expired terms because executive committeemen are four
- 19:03year terms revolving. So we will have an election next
- 19:07year 2X was it? No.
- 19:10Yeah, just the one for the one year on expired term that Nikki
- 19:14Phillips is filling this year. All right.
- 19:20Any other National Convention speak you guys want to talk
- 19:23about? We had some good resolutions go
- 19:27through. I do know everything.
- 19:30About the anything doing with our CAS, they voted in as a
- 19:35grouping, though some of them I probably would have objected to
- 19:38if I could have, but they were again non binding.
- 19:43Resolutions are pretty much a wish list.
- 19:47Their advisory and nature of what we would like to see in
- 19:49contract negotiations. Yeah, I will.
- 19:53I will say this about the people that were there.
- 19:56There are a lot of very, very passionate people that were
- 19:59there and they stood up to the mic.
- 20:02They spoke their mind and made sure that when we were voting
- 20:07about resolutions that were objected to, they had their
- 20:12chance to speak. A lot of times they would
- 20:13actually extend the time because you only get a specific amount
- 20:17of time to speak about each resolution.
- 20:20Until somebody asks for an extension of that time, and I
- 20:23believe the longest time we talked about a resolution was
- 20:26actually 12 minutes. I wasn't keeping that track of
- 20:32time, so they they. Agree.
- 20:35We spent at least 20 minutes on the golf resolution.
- 20:40Oh yeah. And then it came back up under
- 20:41new business or unfinished business.
- 20:43Excuse me, it was table to. Unfinished business.
- 20:47Yeah, we were discussing that. A lot of people think that the
- 20:50NRLCA actually pays for the golf tournament, and they don't.
- 20:55But they wanted to put a resolution forward that the
- 20:58person running the golf tournament would at least have
- 21:01their incidentals covered, like their room for the days
- 21:06preceding the golf convention. So they could come in, set it up
- 21:10and all that stuff. But a lot of the golfers
- 21:14actually said if you want to do that, we'll pay more to go to
- 21:18the golf tournament. So they could in turn cover it
- 21:24if they wanted to with just the fees that they charge for you to
- 21:27actually attend the golf tournament.
- 21:30Yep. For those that I mean, like I
- 21:32said, we've seen it all over the social webs.
- 21:35The golf tournament is technically not part of the
- 21:38convention. It is separate.
- 21:40It's just a way. That everybody comes together to
- 21:44hang out, play some golf before convention actually starts, and
- 21:49it's your own choosing on whether or not you want to do it
- 21:51or not. And it's one note.
- 21:56I don't want anybody just barraging our new president who
- 22:00said he had nothing to do with the golf tournament and then
- 22:03came back 3 minutes later say, well, OK, I do sign the
- 22:06contract. Yes, they have to, but they have
- 22:10to do that for legal reasons because the golf tournament does
- 22:14use the NRLCA logo and in order to be able to use the logo you
- 22:17have to have the permission of the national board.
- 22:20Yes. So I don't want anybody
- 22:21disparaging him, OK? And on top of that.
- 22:25He's our president now. To support him, yes, we need.
- 22:29We need, we need our entire union to be unified as we go
- 22:33into contract negotiations. That's the most important thing
- 22:36we're going into right now. That's the thing we need to
- 22:38focus on. We need to make sure that the
- 22:41people that we voted into these positions have our best
- 22:44interests in mind and we need to watch.
- 22:47We need to ensure that they are doing the things that they
- 22:52promised us to do when they went through caucus and make sure
- 22:55that they do the things they promised to do when they took
- 22:57the position. That is what we need to do right
- 23:01now. We need to be supportive of them
- 23:03and we need to make sure that we get the best damn contract we
- 23:06ever can get, especially after everybody else has gotten them.
- 23:10Because if they don't give us the best damn contract we could
- 23:13possibly get, we're going to lose a lot of people to UPSUAW
- 23:17and the other unions. So we need to we need to come
- 23:20together and make a concerted effort to support the royal
- 23:24craft. Well, can I say something about
- 23:34Facebook after the convention? That may or may not be to your
- 23:40liking. Go for it.
- 23:43That's here, and we'll decide. Well, let's see.
- 23:47I stopped at like 681, but a lot of people say, oh great, now I
- 23:53can quit the union with a clear process.
- 23:58And that's the worst thing you can do.
- 24:01You know, that's the worst thing you can do.
- 24:03You're taking away your voice. You're taking away your voice.
- 24:06You're taking away your vote. That is, that is the biggest
- 24:09problem in this union overall. The biggest problem in this
- 24:13union is people not using the voice they have available to
- 24:17them. The the number of delegates that
- 24:20got voted into this office with less than 10% of delegate
- 24:25ballots returned is the problem. We need participation.
- 24:29We need people voting. We need people actively engaged.
- 24:33Yes, you may not be able to go to National Convention.
- 24:36You may not be able to afford to go.
- 24:38I'm on table too. I I could barely afford to go.
- 24:41If it wasn't for people helping me go to go to National
- 24:44Convention, I probably wouldn't have been able to afford to go.
- 24:48But and then we have an. RCA, yeah, we have an RCA right
- 24:54here who wasn't elected a delegate is not going to get the
- 24:58partial compensation that the union gives for going to this
- 25:01event. Went to this event on her own
- 25:04dime to participate. And I know there's offices that
- 25:08don't have enough help for that. But the thing about it is, is we
- 25:11do have Article 24 in our in our contract that says that
- 25:16management must make every effort to cover your route for
- 25:20union business. The convention is one of those
- 25:23things that Article 24 applies to.
- 25:26And the way it has to happen is they have to find coverage for
- 25:31you, whether it be an RCA in your office, an RCA in another
- 25:36office, or even the postmaster themselves running your route.
- 25:40And I understand what the mini mail with the rec system that
- 25:42having a postmaster run a route is not the smartest thing in the
- 25:45world to do, but that's another option that could cover your
- 25:49route to go to these events. You can't just mail it in haha.
- 25:55Sorry, but you have to not just sit there and go.
- 26:02The union's not working for me. Well, you are the union.
- 26:06You get the ballot in the mail. You need to vote for that person
- 26:11that you feel will vote your way.
- 26:13You know, you get arguments all the time on Facebook about
- 26:16retirees going to these events. And I met with quite a few
- 26:20retirees who actually are behind our current carriers on the
- 26:25road. They're actually up there going
- 26:28through these resolutions and figuring out which ones will and
- 26:31will not work. They're actually creating rooms
- 26:35where they actually get carriers together, retired, non retired
- 26:39carriers together and they discuss these resolutions and
- 26:42they actually pick out which ones they want to object to and
- 26:45things like that. It is hard work there.
- 26:49There were, I believe it was, was it Wild Bill puts on one in
- 26:53his room and they don't stop until all the resolutions have
- 26:56gone through. They get through them all.
- 27:00Yep, Yeah. Well, we we sat down what, 2-3
- 27:03nights ourselves and going through the resolutions going
- 27:08no, I yeah, yeah, we like this one.
- 27:11No, no, or this, you know, question mark.
- 27:14We'll let it hash out on the floor.
- 27:16I mean, we we didn't even get through all of them.
- 27:20The three nights that we sat down and did those together, it
- 27:23really is. A lot of work.
- 27:26And if people just don't see that because yeah, I get it.
- 27:30You see the pictures of the banquet, you see the pictures
- 27:32from the golf tournament, you see the pictures at break time
- 27:36when everybody's socializing. And and after you've been on
- 27:40that convention floor for 8/10/12 hours sometimes or
- 27:44longer depending on a Friday night and what's going on it,
- 27:49you know, you have to decompress.
- 27:51I mean like I said. Night after caucus.
- 27:55You know once we got through caucus it's like okay now.
- 27:59Now we can relax. You know that it just it is a
- 28:03lot of work. It is a mental, mental overload
- 28:07and especially like I said with James coming in as a first timer
- 28:09and not really knowing how it you know what to expect fully
- 28:14and then diving right in and self nominating and.
- 28:18And going through the really hard parts completely on his
- 28:22own, I do applaud him for that. I was in a similar situation
- 28:27last year. Fortunately, you know, Bill
- 28:29nominated me and I did get a member of my state to walk with
- 28:33me. So I wasn't completely on my
- 28:35own. But still, you know, I basically
- 28:37threw myself I threw myself to the wolves last year.
- 28:40I I do. I want to thank everybody that I
- 28:43talked to this week that. I did have a booth to start
- 28:47with, but after, you know, my decisions to not run this year
- 28:51was basically wholly on family. It's like I told everybody, you
- 28:56know, my daughter's entering her senior year, I got to get her
- 28:58through school and everybody understood that, you know, my
- 29:03family comes first, I said. I walked off the floor while the
- 29:06Pmg's talking to go take a phone call from my son.
- 29:11So yeah, you know, my family comes first to me, first and
- 29:14foremost. So I took this year off of
- 29:15running. I had many.
- 29:17I did not keep track, but I know I had many, some from every
- 29:22region. The people that I talked to that
- 29:24asked me if I was going to be coming back next year and
- 29:26running and that I don't want to.
- 29:31And if you guys are listening, I want to thank you.
- 29:33That meant the world to me. As of right now, more than
- 29:37likely I may. What position, I don't know yet.
- 29:40I still have time to think about that.
- 29:42It is still depends on where I'm at sitting family wise when
- 29:46convention comes around next year on what I'm 100% going to
- 29:49do, I'll be at convention regardless if I'm a delegate or
- 29:51not. So I'll see you all there.
- 29:53It's definitely a week of work. One of the other things I saw or
- 29:59one of the Facebook posts is someone like yeah, I saw they
- 30:02posted pictures. Of the tournament, the banquet,
- 30:07the this, the that and the seminars.
- 30:10And if some of them seminars, you can count on one hand how
- 30:13many people were in there. I'm like you got to keep in mind
- 30:17so many seminars. For example, is the State
- 30:20Editors Seminar the? I'm sorry.
- 30:25Josh, were you there? Were you there this year, Josh?
- 30:33I went there, but I've been. I was keeping up as best they
- 30:36could and I did look through the program.
- 30:39I'm just saying what what there was for seminars, it was all
- 30:46optional extras like TST retirement legislation.
- 30:53And they may be optional, but they're useful.
- 30:56They're they're useful. And the thing about it is, is
- 30:58they schedule them all at the same time.
- 31:00So like this year you could go to the retirement seminar, next
- 31:04year you go to the TSP seminar, you know, that's the hard part.
- 31:08And then you also have your state chaplains, you have your
- 31:11legislative, you have your state presidents and things like that
- 31:15all going on at the same time too.
- 31:18So it it's very difficult to juggle what you want to attend
- 31:21at these conventions because they're trying to cram so much
- 31:25into a single week and a lot of the information they give out.
- 31:28It would take actually two weeks to do and especially the
- 31:32resolution if they if we only worked postal hours on the
- 31:36resolutions, we'd be there a week just doing that.
- 31:40Yeah, we'd still be there. Yeah, we'd still be there this
- 31:43coming week. And if they yeah, and if they
- 31:46allowed amendments to resolutions, we'd still be
- 31:49there. The only thing you can add, you
- 31:51can amend is constitutional amendments or or if the maker,
- 31:58or if the maker of the resolution finds a scribner's
- 32:02error on what the Constitution Committee put up there.
- 32:06Yeah, that Scribner's error is completely Yeah, go ahead.
- 32:10I have a yellow card at at microphone 6, yellow card at
- 32:13microphone six. Can I?
- 32:17I have a point of personal privilege, please.
- 32:20Absolutely. Yeah.
- 32:20Those two, yeah. I'm sorry, May Delegate
- 32:23Pennsylvania. No, it's like me.
- 32:29I'm James from Texas. Missouri.
- 32:31Louisiana, Florida. Yeah, at least according
- 32:35according to Ronnie. I was from all those different
- 32:37states. Apparently I mastered the mutual
- 32:39transfer and all these different states the first year.
- 32:42After after a certain point, he just goes Brennan running,
- 32:46running. It was also Brennan in.
- 32:49It was also Brennan in Don't Forget.
- 32:51That Brendan? Yeah, I forgot the Brendan in.
- 32:53Yeah, I forgot that one. But this, this I folks, I had
- 32:58planned to be my last run at the presidential seat and my wife
- 33:05said if, you know, if I'm going to get involved next year, then
- 33:09I got to do all the area conferences and then she'll be
- 33:12with me in Reno to give it one more try.
- 33:15Because God, I hate quitting and I hate seeing what's happened to
- 33:19our craft. So I'll be running for president
- 33:22again next year, and the craft means that much to you.
- 33:28It does. I mean, I, you know, I could
- 33:30have left two years ago no problem.
- 33:32And and I I took one more year to take a run at it and that my
- 33:35wife's you know, saying, you know you can't quit now then
- 33:40folks, I can't quit. It's not in me.
- 33:43And on top of that, you can't say no to your wife.
- 33:47Oh, I did once, but you know, the black eye went down after
- 33:50three days. I, I, I I had it in my head all
- 34:00night and half through the day that, you know, I'm going to
- 34:03miss Bill next year. Bill, thank you.
- 34:08Yeah, thanks. Bill.
- 34:09You know, this this whole week, if it wasn't for you would have
- 34:12been a lot harder for me overall.
- 34:14You and Chris and both together working nonstop to help me even
- 34:19though you had your own campaign to run and Kristen was your
- 34:22campaign manager. You know, you guys, you guys
- 34:25were a great source of information and a shoulder to
- 34:28lean on when I needed it. And I really do appreciate that
- 34:31from both of you. I really do.
- 34:33And I know I mentioned it in my in my concession speech, but I
- 34:37wanted to put it out there on the air that Kristen and Bill
- 34:41did a lot for me behind the scenes that a lot of people
- 34:44didn't see when I was doing a lot of stuff, supposedly by
- 34:48myself. I still had a support network
- 34:50there behind me, as well as the fans that kept coming up and and
- 34:54talking with me and asking how I'm doing and how's it going and
- 34:57things like that. I really do.
- 34:59I want to give everybody my heart felt thanks for that, you
- 35:02know, considering it was so much information overload for me in
- 35:07that and people just kept me grounded, kept me down to earth
- 35:11and dealing with this whole situation and I just really want
- 35:14to give them my thanks. And that's what we do.
- 35:18We we support each other. We support our craft and we
- 35:22support the podcast and we support everybody who needs
- 35:26help, no matter what. This is what we're here for.
- 35:29This is what we do this on Sunday nights, on our own time,
- 35:33our own expense. No compensation because we care
- 35:37enough about everybody else besides ourselves.
- 35:43Exactly. And as as a correction, Bill, it
- 35:46was Linda that helped us at the end with the Rice Krispie treats
- 35:50and I want to give out a shout out to Ellie.
- 35:54She's from my state. She made some key chains for us
- 35:58throughout the week for the podcast, which every time we put
- 36:01them on the table, they were gone within 510 minutes.
- 36:04I do have some extras left. I'll post them up on the
- 36:08Facebook page and possibly the group if anybody wants them out
- 36:14to count and see how many I got them.
- 36:15I'm just going to ask $5 to cover shipping for them and I'll
- 36:19be happy to ship one out. If you want a keychain, I'm
- 36:22going to try and set her up. I haven't decided if I'm going
- 36:25to do a Spotify or an Etsy Weather.
- 36:28She also made me a Tumblr. These tumblers are super cool.
- 36:32I'll get a picture up when I can later.
- 36:35They actually have a Bluetooth speaker that you can screw into
- 36:38the bottom of the Tumblr. Perfect for work if you want to
- 36:41listen to stuff out on the route if you're in an LLV or whatever.
- 36:45I it's a little heavy so I unscrewed the the speaker and
- 36:49just carried the Tumblr with me. I keep ice cold all day long.
- 36:54I was complaining because my ice wasn't melting so I had to keep
- 36:56going out and refilling my water.
- 36:59I will post that she is willing to do stuff for us, merch for
- 37:03us, for the podcast pretty much on an on order basis.
- 37:08But I want to give a shout out to her and say thank you very
- 37:11much. And again, to all the fans that
- 37:13were able to take the time we had a lot of them, they're like
- 37:16is it OK? I mean, it sounds kind of
- 37:17fangirl to take a picture with ya.
- 37:19We had a lot of that and like I said Bill and I walking out of
- 37:23the hotel Sunday evening to go out and have a smoke and we get
- 37:27stopped at the door. Bill I I know that voice is that
- 37:31the bill and we you know or I I I know your voice we we did like
- 37:36say James was a little taken back at first you know it but we
- 37:39did we had a lot of people that stop and talk to us and show
- 37:42their appreciation for what we do here.
- 37:45And again, we want to thank you and let you know that we all.
- 37:49We all appreciate every single one of you as well.
- 37:53Yeah, So, so taken aback by this is the fact of how how much
- 37:59negativity has surrounded the podcast that I've seen.
- 38:02And I probably just see the negativity because that's what I
- 38:04look for, but that I didn't expect so many fans to be at
- 38:10National Convention. And that's a testament not only
- 38:13to the message that we put out, but it's also a testament to the
- 38:19people that listened and voted for delegates that would
- 38:22actually step up and come to convention and do the right
- 38:26thing when they came to convention.
- 38:28You know, and sitting there and listening to all the people and
- 38:31things like that about their concerns and stuff like that.
- 38:34Especially after I decided to run for office.
- 38:38It was some of it was heart wrenching, some of it was
- 38:42disheartening and a lot of things.
- 38:44I talked with an ADR who's working over 100 hours a week
- 38:49for their carriers and they're part time.
- 38:52They're a part time ADR working over 100 hours a week for the
- 38:55craft. Those people are the ones that
- 38:58deserve our applause. Those are the people that
- 39:00deserve our appreciation the most, the ones that go out and
- 39:03fight for this craft day in and day out.
- 39:07I said it in my speech when I was running for Director Stewart
- 39:10Operations. But the Stewart system is the
- 39:12backbone of this union. They're the the first face that
- 39:16carriers see of the union. They're the ones that protect
- 39:20the carriers from this union and the stewards that are out there
- 39:24that are stepping up. I applaud every single one of
- 39:27you. You guys do a bang up job for
- 39:31very little recognition and I want to give you the recognition
- 39:34here on this podcast. And on a side note, Kristen, you
- 39:38missed yourself a shameless plug when you were talking about that
- 39:41Bluetooth speaker on that cup. You could have said and you can
- 39:43listen to the United We Scan podcast on your.
- 39:46Bluetooth speaker, you could have done that.
- 39:50Well, like I did well. Like I did in my concession
- 39:52speech. Like I did in the concession
- 39:54speech. Yeah, I'm gonna suggest when the
- 40:00transcripts come out, that you all.
- 40:04If you'd already don't have the mail in to get the hard copy
- 40:08that you go to the website and download the transcripts, I
- 40:14think I might get a hard copy this year.
- 40:16You know, James, your concession speech, I I really wanted to
- 40:23jump up and applaud at the end. But I had some self restraint,
- 40:28very much self restraint. And I just kind of put my head
- 40:31down and shook it, going, oh God.
- 40:36I thanked everybody that helped me through this whole process,
- 40:39especially especially the ones that helped me do a lot more
- 40:44research, not just only on our union, but across the board on
- 40:48other items. So I had to thank them for that
- 40:51because they're the ones who helped me expand my knowledge.
- 40:56So I had to thank them. And that's the most important
- 40:58thing is when when you are conceding.
- 41:01You have to thank the people that helped you get where you
- 41:04were today. And I have to say, while Kristen
- 41:07was dunking her head down, going, Oh my God, oh, my bill
- 41:11was back in the Pennsylvania delegation holding his hands
- 41:14out, going, that's big balds, James.
- 41:16I mean, they were huge. He had a problem walking off the
- 41:21stage after that concession speech.
- 41:24And I mean huge balls for saying what he did.
- 41:29And James, you can say you're welcome to say what you said you
- 41:35you are and you did it with class.
- 41:37Look at you there. I now I want to say kudos to
- 41:43both Bill and James this year on a good run that they put in.
- 41:48You know, unfortunately, I didn't see any of James's
- 41:50caucuses as I was steering Bill from behind to keep him in line
- 41:54at age. Mother Hen Belle, could you have
- 42:02gotten through that caucus with that much grease without me
- 42:04there by your side? I might have had trouble.
- 42:11Oh, I would have had trouble, definitely, if you weren't
- 42:13there. Yeah, yeah, you know.
- 42:16I was just what ended up happening last year with Zach.
- 42:20I swear I was most worried for you, Zach went.
- 42:24Very well. Yeah.
- 42:26Sack Sack was they had a different moderator.
- 42:29They were, they were very respectful and you know, nothing
- 42:33down and dirty that you know. They were upfront and and very
- 42:36personable and it didn't and it didn't hurt that Sack was our
- 42:43second caucus of the night, so. Yeah, got it out of the way.
- 42:47Yeah. And I will say this, there was
- 42:51no there was no undermining or attempting to.
- 42:57Throw somebody under the bus in the caucuses.
- 43:00It was actually very, very professional and I appreciate
- 43:04every single caucus that I went to and how they how they treated
- 43:08me with such respect as being somebody so fresh and so new.
- 43:12You know, it was one of those that you walk into the room and
- 43:15and you know that these people could turn around and just land
- 43:19based you if they wanted to. And they didn't and they were
- 43:22very respectful and I really am appreciative of them for that
- 43:26and allowing me the time to speak in front of them for that
- 43:30as well. Now I'm going to.
- 43:34The no, no, hold on, Josh. I'm going to mention the funny
- 43:37of the night for caucus night and I scared about 50 people in
- 43:43the in the room. We went into this caucus and
- 43:47this. Individual, individual in the
- 43:50backroom. Thank you Kristen, for curbing
- 43:52me. This individual in the backroom
- 43:55asked me a question about my temperament and that the
- 43:58relationship between the union and the post office is like a
- 44:01marriage. Well, in my mind, a marriage,
- 44:04you sleep with the person, so you you don't want that kind of
- 44:06relationship with the post office.
- 44:09But then when they got done with the temperament, I turned around
- 44:11and I started out smoothly and then I said, and I am sick and
- 44:16tired of people. Questioning my temperament and
- 44:19I'm shouting this, I started out shouting and went off for 10
- 44:23seconds. Who was it?
- 44:26The soon app was in the front row.
- 44:28She jumped so hard, Kristen jumped and was so stunned she
- 44:33didn't know whether to tackle me or not.
- 44:35And after I got done my little rant, I just brought it right
- 44:37back to a speaking tone and took over the room.
- 44:40Then people started laughing. But for those 10 seconds, those
- 44:44people didn't know whether the old bill was back or not.
- 44:48My throat was literally in my my stomach was literally in my
- 44:51throat. At that moment, I am sure there
- 44:54was a look appeared dread on my face.
- 44:56Even though I couldn't see it, I could feel it and I'm going, oh
- 45:00crap, here we go, how are we going to get out of this?
- 45:04But then he brought it back and I was like.
- 45:09And it helped when people started laughing.
- 45:12Yeah, it definitely did. Because then they saw what you
- 45:15did there and, you know, compared to previous years.
- 45:22As we're walking out and after caucus, we we got many Pats on
- 45:28the backs and many great job. It's nice to see this side of
- 45:31you and not the angry man in quotes.
- 45:37So yeah, so we are going to come back even better and stronger
- 45:40next year. Won't we go?
- 45:42Please don't confuse my passion for anger.
- 45:46Absolutely. I.
- 45:48Want to say I was going to say I'm glad you had James.
- 45:54I'm glad you had such a good experience with this.
- 45:58I know last year there was one, a young lady that was running
- 46:04for a position and a couple people told her she just needs
- 46:10to pack up and go home. She was there this year as a
- 46:13delegate. I know she came to Bill's booth
- 46:15and they talked briefly. She was there as a delegate.
- 46:20She wasn't running for anything, but she was there.
- 46:22Well, after where she? I didn't think she would, but
- 46:26she was. You never know.
- 46:28And and James was the guy from Georgia that came up to me to
- 46:31clarify my position last year. Yeah, that that was interesting,
- 46:36the guy. So I'll tell my side of that
- 46:38story. And then you explained the
- 46:40conversation you had with him. So he comes up to me and and
- 46:45he's talking with me because I'm running for position and Bill's
- 46:48running for position and he's excited about what I'm talking
- 46:52about And I say and that's why I'm running for Bill and he said
- 46:56and I can't vote for Bill and I said why not.
- 46:58And he says it's because Bill said he doesn't support the
- 47:03union, he supports the he support doesn't support the
- 47:06union. And I'm like, well, that doesn't
- 47:09really sound like Bill. And I said, well, I tell you
- 47:11what. Go and talk with Bill and then
- 47:14let me know how you feel about him after that, because I don't
- 47:17think you got the full message. And so he went and talked with
- 47:20Bill. And what did he ask you, Bill?
- 47:23He asked me if I supported the union and I explained to him.
- 47:27I says I support the craft. I says the union that I see is
- 47:33the board that doesn't truly represent the craft.
- 47:36I says I wholeheartedly back the union.
- 47:40But the thing of it is we had and we had a 10 minute
- 47:42conversation and he he's he he agreed with me.
- 47:44He says I'm sorry. He says I I stopped listening
- 47:47after you said you didn't support the union.
- 47:52You did a great concession speech.
- 47:54You had a great concession speech.
- 47:55Yeah. The body, the body spoke.
- 47:57I lost fair and square, you know, and and and the story, I
- 48:02mean, you know, I'm disappointed because like Kristen and James
- 48:05said, we were rock stars there. We had people taking pictures
- 48:08with us, I mean. I just didn't understand why the
- 48:11support didn't translate into votes.
- 48:13So somebody explained to me and, you know, I questioned whether
- 48:17states still vote in blocks or not.
- 48:19And supposedly they don't. But we did have a question
- 48:23raised on the floor asked of Ronnie Stutz about, you know,
- 48:27state officers, you know, telling people, you know how to
- 48:30vote. And you know, I I'm not sure
- 48:33that it really got resolved, but he kind of put it to bed so.
- 48:38You know well. The the question, the question
- 48:41raised was on ballots that didn't have delegates assigned
- 48:45to them. And the rules state that it is
- 48:50to be of a majority of the caucus.
- 48:53And most people are translating that into you have to tell the
- 48:57caucus who you're voting for in order to get that majority.
- 49:01But if they if the caucus was actually legitimate, the
- 49:05president would get all the votes together.
- 49:08Count them out to who votes what and use it that way for the
- 49:12majority vote. That would be the proper way to
- 49:14do it. If they're doing it by raising
- 49:16your hand for a person, or if they're doing it by any other
- 49:20means, that reveals who you voted for.
- 49:22It shouldn't be done that way because it's supposed to be a
- 49:25private ballot. So if that's how they're doing
- 49:29it, then that needs to change and they need to find a better
- 49:32way to do it. But if they're doing it in the
- 49:34proper and legitimate way of finding the majority vote?
- 49:38I'm all for that. At the same time I'm at at the
- 49:42also at the problem of these people.
- 49:45If they aren't here to vote, they should.
- 49:47There shouldn't be a vote in their slot.
- 49:50That's my own personal opinion. And I also, I also want to take
- 49:54a moment to applaud the people who traveled the hardest
- 49:58distance to come to this caucus. And that was the the two
- 50:02delegates from Puerto Rico who came and participated in this.
- 50:08Convention because they had to come all the way from Puerto
- 50:12Rico. There was the 1 from Alaska.
- 50:15He was selling the snow cones out there, remember?
- 50:18Oh yeah, and and him too. You know, these people that come
- 50:21from far away, over the oceans, over another country in some
- 50:26instances to get here. And I did.
- 50:31I did laugh when. They were talking about ending
- 50:35night time delivery in that Alaskan guy got up there and
- 50:39said, well, if you did that, we'd have 15 days where we
- 50:42wouldn't deliver. That was hilarious.
- 50:48Well, if I'd have heard that, I'd have said well, you would be
- 50:50considered a city route in Westchester.
- 50:57So, all right, anything else from National?
- 51:01Yeah it it was again I I I'm glad for James to go through
- 51:05through the toughest conventional ever face and and
- 51:08he did it with pride and dignity and and we're proud of him yes
- 51:12we are. And and and in a suit.
- 51:14Something I don't wear in a suit.
- 51:19I I know I got that text from Bill that morning going, you're
- 51:21not going to recognize James. And I'm going, huh?
- 51:24Then I look, I'm like, whoa, where where'd you come from?
- 51:31Yeah. I'm I'm a I'm a rural carrier.
- 51:33I don't wear a suit. I don't wear a suit because I'm
- 51:35about delivering the mail and I'm not going to go out there
- 51:38and get a suit dirty in an LLV on dirt roads, and especially
- 51:43not in the summertime. I die of heat stroke in the
- 51:46first hour. Trust me, I I I saw him and I'm
- 51:51like, who the hell is that? Right.
- 51:56Right. But yeah, so.
- 52:00It was a good convention, a lot of, a lot of things hashed out
- 52:03professionally amongst amongst the delegates.
- 52:06You know, there was no need for a WWE the ring this year.
- 52:11So I saw, I saw posts about having cage matches between
- 52:15people and I had to laugh about that.
- 52:16But that definitely would have made it a little bit more
- 52:19interesting. Oh God, yeah.
- 52:23Imagine how much money Pack would raise for that.
- 52:26Oh, I know, right? Maybe we should pass it on to
- 52:29the national Pack chair. Hey, we need to do this.
- 52:32I'm sure you'd raise tons of money.
- 52:34Maybe. Maybe that's maybe that's how we
- 52:36elect our next officers. You know, put them in a cage
- 52:39match. I'm game.
- 52:45I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding.
- 52:47We do not promote violence on this channel.
- 52:50We do not promote violence. Cage Match is not violence, it's
- 52:53entertainment okay. Yes.
- 52:56And every move is planned to perfection and choreographed and
- 53:02scripted. All right, guys.
- 53:07So if we have nothing more on National Convention, we're going
- 53:11to briefly talk about the upcoming mini Mail survey.
- 53:16As with the past one, the mini mail survey is counting the bare
- 53:24minimum. This is where you know the the
- 53:27days of the old mail counts are gone.
- 53:30I have the I have the Presurvey stand up talk that the
- 53:40postmasters were are supposed to be reading to you no later than
- 53:44Thursday, August 24th. So you should be having a stand
- 53:48up talk if you haven't already because they issued it on August
- 53:5115th, but. The gist of it is the mini mail
- 53:56survey will be from August 25th a a Friday through September 8th
- 54:02and the reason why they are including that Friday is because
- 54:06of the holiday. Now you're going to get holiday
- 54:09volumes on that Tuesday so that's going to help benefit
- 54:13your mini mail survey. But it starts on the morning of
- 54:17Friday the 25th and will conclude at end of shift Friday
- 54:21September 8th. All rural routes are included in
- 54:25this survey. Management will conduct the mini
- 54:29mail survey. Craft employees working in EAS
- 54:33higher level assignments may conduct that the required
- 54:36activities provided they have received appropriate training
- 54:40and have a PS Form 1723 on file. The office walk distances will
- 54:47be measured jointly by the carrier and a manager.
- 54:51This means manually measured with a wheel.
- 54:55I have heard talks of it being digital now with the scanners,
- 54:59but I'm sorry, most buildings are a fair day cage when it
- 55:02comes to GPS signals. That's not going to happen.
- 55:04Don't don't let them tell you otherwise.
- 55:07It is a manual measurement with a wheel, random letters, random
- 55:12flats. Cars 3982 labels and
- 55:16miscellaneous office activity will be counted or timed daily
- 55:20and entered into RMSS no later than close of business on the
- 55:25current day. Letters pulled from DPS Hold
- 55:30mail or closed school businesses will be counted as random
- 55:34letters at the same time that they arrive.
- 55:39So if you have a business that is closed on a Saturday or a
- 55:42school that is closed. Not only will you get the DPS
- 55:46credit for it that day, you will also get a random mail credit
- 55:49for that day. We'll talk about that in the
- 55:51short bit. The Daily Volume worksheet will
- 55:55be provided to the carrier upon completion no later than the
- 55:59morning, the follow the morning following the day's entries.
- 56:03The weekly summary worksheet will be provided at the end of
- 56:06the survey period for review. Change of addresses Carrier
- 56:11cases must be checked by management on the day preceding
- 56:14the start of the Mini Mail Survey to prevent PARS labels
- 56:18from being included that were not printed on that very first
- 56:21Friday at the conclusion of the survey.
- 56:25If a regular desires to elect high option, should the option
- 56:28be available, they must indicate it on the Mini Mail Survey
- 56:32Summary and toggle Change to Yes.
- 56:34In route settings, that's on the management side, management has
- 56:38to toggle that you want the high option.
- 56:40So I would recommend the carriers actually sit there and
- 56:44say I want high option, can you show me you toggling the high
- 56:46option please? So discussion and start with
- 56:51that and then we'll go back to the closed business.
- 56:59Didn't you get a message Bill, about wanting to choose the high
- 57:03or low option for your route? Yes, I while I convention I got
- 57:09a text message from my supervisor asking if I wanted
- 57:12the high low option and I questioned her.
- 57:16As you know, since I'm a 67.34 hour K route and I have 25
- 57:22years, in what option do I have a J59?
- 57:27I mean, you know it. The thing of it is that you
- 57:30can't select an option until the mini mail survey is done.
- 57:34So you know, where did this come from?
- 57:38This, this is the management team leading my office.
- 57:41This is, this is a woman. When I asked her about a radar
- 57:43report, she says, what is that? The folks, you know, educate
- 57:48yourselves, please. Because the people above you,
- 57:52they're clueless. And you know, if you don't
- 57:54protect yourself, nobody will. Now the biggest thing about this
- 58:03is this is your money. All those scans you've been in
- 58:06putting for the last six months are part of your money.
- 58:10We've got a full year going into this one because of the six
- 58:13months prior to the last mini Mail survey plus this six
- 58:16months. So we now have almost 52 weeks
- 58:19worth of data going into this system.
- 58:22And of course, you're not going to get the full evaluation that
- 58:25your route actually deserves with this one.
- 58:27It'll still be lower than what you should be, but it'll should
- 58:31work its way up if you've been doing your scans when you
- 58:34haven't been, or if you haven't been doing all the scans and now
- 58:37you have been, things like that. Now the mini Mail survey.
- 58:41Make sure you keep track. Remember, the DPS errors
- 58:46includes your of them. Includes your.
- 58:50See it, dear. Forward your.
- 58:54Miss sorts Miss Sense. Miss sorts, Miss sense.
- 58:57Your upside down is one for every four Upside Down you get.
- 59:02One random letter for every four upside down that you have, you
- 59:07know and don't. Don't go down or inverted.
- 59:10Don't forget the schools and businesses closed on Saturdays.
- 59:14Yep, and we'll get into that here in just a moment.
- 59:17But everything you pull out of your DPS should be counted as as
- 59:23DPS errors and as a random letter, so make sure you're
- 59:29getting the count for that and things like that.
- 59:34And as the topic of discussion for the Mini Mail survey, you
- 59:38know, everything we do in the office is only supposed to
- 59:41represent 6%. So please, people.
- 59:46Don't believe that you're going to jump back up to where you
- 59:48were. That's not going to happen, But
- 59:51at least you can take back some of what you lost.
- 59:55If you're doing all the scans and you're doing all the the
- 59:58miss sorts, miss sense Uvbm's, if you're doing your job you'll
- 1:00:02go back up a little. Not a lot, because again, what
- 1:00:06you're doing is only going to represent the 6 to 8% of your
- 1:00:09total evaluation. And I hate to be the, I hate to
- 1:00:14be the Debbie Downer on it, but since the last official mail
- 1:00:18count in 2018 prior to the Rex implementation, mail volumes
- 1:00:23have gone down significantly in most areas.
- 1:00:27So you also have to remember that fact.
- 1:00:30Parcel parcels on the other hand, depending on where you're
- 1:00:32at, I do understand offices that have lost Amazon and offices
- 1:00:38that have gained Amazon since offices like mine who had we had
- 1:00:43Amazon, we dropped a look quite a bit for for a few months right
- 1:00:50around the time of the last mini mail survey and then it came
- 1:00:54back with a vengeance a couple months ago and it hasn't let up.
- 1:00:58I mean all these variables, so but for but for a true, as long
- 1:01:04as you're doing all the scans, not just the six, but all the
- 1:01:07scans that apply to your route, when they apply to your route,
- 1:01:11yeah, I'll have to remember it is going to take a full year, a
- 1:01:14full 52 week cycle for these evaluations to finally kind of
- 1:01:18even out to where they actually should be and.
- 1:01:23If I'm wrong, please please correct me.
- 1:01:26I would say like Bill was saying, the survey is only 6% of
- 1:01:30the evaluation. What you get in these two weeks,
- 1:01:37the only difference it'll make is.
- 1:01:39You're within a minute or two of the next evaluation, up or down,
- 1:01:43correct? It could be the difference of 23
- 1:01:47or 44 K 3 to 22 K depending on what those numbers are.
- 1:01:53But the bulk of it, 95%, is already set through the end of
- 1:02:00run or radar reports your and your data entry into the
- 1:02:05scanner. Of that 6%, is the walk
- 1:02:11distances in the office through the 3rd a wheel?
- 1:02:15Josh You're getting a little difficult to understand.
- 1:02:18So like Josh was saying is that 6%, that 6% is a small drop in
- 1:02:24the bucket and at most if you have a lot of random letters, a
- 1:02:30large walking distance. All the numbers are a lot higher
- 1:02:33than other offices. You may get a maximum of 15
- 1:02:36minutes added to your route with the mini mail survey.
- 1:02:41Right. I was saying 1% of that six is
- 1:02:44The Walking distances in the office and that's from the
- 1:02:47center of your case to wherever the point is and back for most
- 1:02:52of them. So the next part is your closed
- 1:02:59businesses and schools. Now they came out with an MOU,
- 1:03:05and this MOU came from both the Postal Service and the union.
- 1:03:14And in the original agreement, they had agreed that back when
- 1:03:18the many when the counts were happening that D, PS:, closed
- 1:03:22schools or business letter mail received during a mail count
- 1:03:26would be based on the number of pieces received.
- 1:03:29If seven or less pieces were received, the letters would be
- 1:03:32credited as random letters and if eight or more were received,
- 1:03:36credit would be given as a parcel.
- 1:03:39The Rex system has required a change to the above due to the
- 1:03:44application of new route standards, effective with the
- 1:03:48next mini mail survey if D PS:. Letter mail is received for a
- 1:03:52closed school or business, whether cased or taken to the
- 1:03:56street. Each piece will be credited as a
- 1:03:58random letter mail piece on the day the mail is received, so you
- 1:04:03will be getting 2 credits in office on the same day.
- 1:04:06You will get the DPS credit and the random mail credit, so
- 1:04:12you're going to get a double dipping on the day you receive
- 1:04:16it instead of getting the unscanned parcel credit however
- 1:04:22it says in the office. Because in the mail count it was
- 1:04:27a credit in the office, so carrier discretion how you want
- 1:04:32to apply that, we're not going to tell you one way or the other
- 1:04:36but make sure any any scans you input into your scanner you can
- 1:04:40back up with fax and this will actually not back up your fax on
- 1:04:45the unscanned parcel in that instance.
- 1:04:49So make sure you're you're doing the proper procedure and getting
- 1:04:52the credit plus I believe. If you add it up and you have 8
- 1:04:56letters that is actually in the random credit, it is actually 8
- 1:04:59letters is equal to 1 unscanned parcel credit in the mailbox.
- 1:05:04So just just to remember that there was also an MO U that was
- 1:05:10released this week pertaining to RX and this will supersede the
- 1:05:17MO U sign March 31st relative to the rural route evaluations
- 1:05:22under the rule Route Evaluation Compensation System RX.
- 1:05:27The first rule route evaluations under RX were implemented on May
- 1:05:306th, 2023 and the second route evaluations will be effective
- 1:05:36October 7th, which is also the beginning of the new guarantee
- 1:05:39period. I'm adding that in utilizing
- 1:05:44volume data during the 52 week period September 9th, 2022
- 1:05:50through September 8th, 2023 along with many mail survey data
- 1:05:55collected August 25th through September 8th, 2023.
- 1:06:00Beginning with the second rural route evaluations, the parties
- 1:06:03have agreed to a modification to the route coverage calculation
- 1:06:08consisting of three changes. Route coverage will be
- 1:06:11calculated by averaging the daily coverage values for the 52
- 1:06:16week period. Daily route coverage will be
- 1:06:19calculated separately for all regular boxes and daily route
- 1:06:24coverage will be calculated separately for all centralized
- 1:06:27boxes. I know that was a big one with
- 1:06:30this last one was those that coverage for those CBU's.
- 1:06:34The parties also agree that by the end of the calendar year,
- 1:06:37route coverage will be displayed on available daily reporting.
- 1:06:42The internal methodology for calculation of the drive speed
- 1:06:46utilizing the authorized miles and the route stops excluding
- 1:06:51traffic control points to determine the average interval
- 1:06:55for the subsequent application of the standard from the drive
- 1:07:00speed matrix will continue to be utilized should the rural route
- 1:07:03not have available mapping information at the time of the
- 1:07:06evaluation. Additionally, the previously
- 1:07:10agree upon average time to be applied to parcel deliveries to
- 1:07:15the door will continue to be used when mapped data is
- 1:07:18unavailable. Either party may request to
- 1:07:22reevaluate this Interim RX methodology at any time.
- 1:07:26Roll routes will be evaluated every six months following the
- 1:07:29evaluation. Effective October 7th, 2023.
- 1:07:34The beginning of the first full pay period in April and October
- 1:07:37respectively, will be the effective date of all future
- 1:07:42rural route evaluations. Unless the parties agree
- 1:07:45otherwise. The volume data collection
- 1:07:48period will consist of 52 weeks which will end on the last day
- 1:07:53of the pay period 2 full pay periods prior to the April and
- 1:07:57October effective dates. The mini mail survey data will
- 1:08:01be collected during the last 12 working days of the 52 week
- 1:08:05period. Thus, the new rural route
- 1:08:08evaluations will be effective at the beginning of the third full
- 1:08:13pay period following the completion of data collection
- 1:08:16period. The provisions set forth in the
- 1:08:18MLU do not restrict the parties from negotiating changes to our
- 1:08:22Rex should the opportunities arise based on future
- 1:08:26advancements in technology. So there's the other second
- 1:08:31update we have on that that came out this week.
- 1:08:35I get that'll be a good thing. For those of you that have
- 1:08:37centralized boxes and regular boxes, those will be averaged
- 1:08:43separately, which is ideal. I do believe there was that big
- 1:08:48issue there with the CBU's. What was the other one I was
- 1:08:52going to bring up? Let me go back through while
- 1:08:56you're looking that up mapping please.
- 1:08:58I know my office wants to have the mapping done prior to the
- 1:09:02mini mail survey starting. If you look on the website when
- 1:09:07it has the timeline for everything, you do have until
- 1:09:11the end of close of business day September 8th to make sure that
- 1:09:15all your mapping is back up to date for it to be effect.
- 1:09:19In this evaluation I would definitely get with your
- 1:09:23management and make sure every single one of you carriers are
- 1:09:28sitting down with management under end of shift duties to
- 1:09:32make sure that your mapping is up to date and correct and if
- 1:09:40they are not letting you get a hold of your Dr. immediately.
- 1:09:45I wanted to. We had a question in the chat
- 1:09:48about why do government vehicles get The Walking distance from
- 1:09:54the case to the vehicle and back and Pov's done that walking
- 1:09:58distance in the. Is supposed to when you clock
- 1:10:01in, first thing you do is go out and do an inspection of your
- 1:10:04vehicle. For the government vehicles to
- 1:10:07verify there is no evidence of an issue that they need to
- 1:10:13write. It needs to be written up and
- 1:10:15have made vehicle maintenance come out in repair of IT POV's.
- 1:10:21You're supposed to check your vehicle and keep it route ready
- 1:10:27when you arrive. So that's why you don't get that
- 1:10:34credit, that walking distance credit.
- 1:10:37But, but you do get time, minute to minute, second to second from
- 1:10:42the time you leave your case to go load your vehicle to the time
- 1:10:45you return to your case under the start load vehicle and end
- 1:10:49load vehicle. So it doesn't matter how far you
- 1:10:53have to walk, you're getting the time it takes you to walk that
- 1:10:56distance instead of the measurements.
- 1:10:59And it's actually more value under the time than it is The
- 1:11:03Walking distance, because depending on how much you have
- 1:11:08to push out there, you might be walking a lot slower than you
- 1:11:10would if you were just walking out there to inspect the
- 1:11:12vehicle, especially your, your, your, your, your conveyance
- 1:11:18method that you know. Everybody's different.
- 1:11:23I know some offices that use the steel cages, the wires they use,
- 1:11:27the nutting carts they use. We have pumpkins and hampers and
- 1:11:34hampers. We have pumpkins and hampers.
- 1:11:36I know some office, I know my previous office.
- 1:11:38So they don't longer use them, they use the wire cages.
- 1:11:40But that time we used Apc's. I mean it really just you know
- 1:11:46how what it takes you to load is what it takes you to load.
- 1:11:50No, there are no benchmarks for loading times.
- 1:11:54There are no event marks for end of shift duties.
- 1:11:58There you know those are recorded actual time for a
- 1:12:03reason. Your end of shift duties can
- 1:12:05include are supposed to include your edit book, updating your
- 1:12:09your case labels, your mapping. Those are all done.
- 1:12:13Do not let your postmasters and your management tell you that
- 1:12:18you have to click over to PM casing to do any of that stuff.
- 1:12:22PM casing stops the clock. There are only two instances
- 1:12:28that you use PM casing. That is if you are casing mail
- 1:12:32that came in later that day for the next day.
- 1:12:35I E box holders, if you case them, something that you may
- 1:12:39have had permission to curtail for the next day, which is a
- 1:12:43rare tea anymore and 2nd trips. And from a personal point of
- 1:12:49view. Benchmarking should be illegal
- 1:12:52on a national average. It should be average on your
- 1:12:55route. That's the only benchmark should
- 1:12:58be set. But them using national averages
- 1:13:02is bullshit and don't edit that out.
- 1:13:07I agree. I actually agree with that 100%.
- 1:13:11Because this is your route. This is not.
- 1:13:14This is not a national route. This is your route.
- 1:13:17This is. Specific issues that occur on
- 1:13:20your route only, You know. If you're sitting there and
- 1:13:24you're getting fires and things like that, or you're constantly
- 1:13:27having people moving out, you're going to have a higher time at
- 1:13:32the end of shift duties. Then if you're in a state that
- 1:13:35doesn't have people moving out or you're on a route that
- 1:13:37doesn't have people changing all the time, you have a route
- 1:13:40that's fully trailer parks that people change out all the time.
- 1:13:44You're going to spend more time on the end of route than you
- 1:13:47are. Of somebody who has a
- 1:13:49neighborhood of single family homes that has young couples in
- 1:13:55them because that was their first house they bought after
- 1:13:58they had kids. So there's a lot of lot of
- 1:14:02variables in each route that we do, and that's what makes this
- 1:14:05world craft so amazing is that even though we do the same job,
- 1:14:09each route is so enough different that they actually are
- 1:14:14entertaining. Each route is unique in its own
- 1:14:17way and I'm going to put this out here on the mapping too.
- 1:14:20If you do not have any edit book changes for the month, yes, I
- 1:14:25know it is possible. I have my primary and my aux
- 1:14:29route had no changes for this month.
- 1:14:32You still need to go in and download your DPM and double
- 1:14:37check and make sure everything's still correct and still run your
- 1:14:41LTM every month even if you have no edit book changes.
- 1:14:47Because there could be changes in there that you didn't, didn't
- 1:14:50realize we're in there and go through every single address in
- 1:14:54your in your DPM. Because I've had addresses say
- 1:14:58that they're vacant when they aren't or I caught an error.
- 1:15:01This last month I caught an error on mine where my
- 1:15:05authorized dismount hardship. Was a completely different
- 1:15:09address on my route than the one it actually is, so I had to get
- 1:15:13that changed. So there's there's errors that
- 1:15:16occur with this program, so you need to go in and check it out.
- 1:15:20And don't tell refuse that we don't have the time to do it.
- 1:15:24That's their responsibility to make that time.
- 1:15:28Absolutely. And if if they aren't talking to
- 1:15:31your designated union Rep? One more thing with loading with
- 1:15:37a POV. You may not have a parking space
- 1:15:41where you get there in the morning or that to leave your
- 1:15:45truck right up against near the loading area.
- 1:15:48So once you get your everything pulled down in the conveyance
- 1:15:51and you roll that conveyance out to the loading area, you include
- 1:15:56that time to walk to your POV and drive it back to the the
- 1:16:01dock or loading area that you use to load up your vehicle.
- 1:16:06Yes, and that includes into shift duties when you come in
- 1:16:12and if you have to park separately from where you
- 1:16:15unload, that is included in your end of shift duties.
- 1:16:20You as soon as you get back and where you park to unload and
- 1:16:25soon as you turn that vehicle off and you hit the return to
- 1:16:27DU. Your end of shift duties start
- 1:16:30then and do not end until you clock out or you have to hit PM
- 1:16:35casing. So if you have to park a vehicle
- 1:16:38in a different spot from where you unload, that is included in
- 1:16:41your end of shift duties. All right guys, I think we're
- 1:16:47going to try and wrap this up for tonight.
- 1:16:50And if there's anything else you want to add real quick on the
- 1:16:52upcoming mini Mail survey, go ahead, do it now.
- 1:16:56Just. Remember, it's your money, so
- 1:17:01monitor it as best you can. Because if there are any
- 1:17:05problems with what's going on with your inputs or your mini
- 1:17:12mail survey, you need to be getting a hold of your
- 1:17:15designated union representative and letting them know what's
- 1:17:17going on. Because it may not be occurring
- 1:17:20in just your office. It may be other offices because
- 1:17:24management has a habit of if it's happening in one office,
- 1:17:28it's probably happening in others because.
- 1:17:31They're just as confused on this stuff as most carriers are, and
- 1:17:36they're getting this information from people who also weren't
- 1:17:39trained. As I talked about in a previous
- 1:17:41episode, even the regional director is not passing the all
- 1:17:44the information down to the district level, so you need to
- 1:17:48be monitoring what's happening with your paycheck.
- 1:17:52Everything you do affects your paycheck, so make sure you're
- 1:17:56doing everything you legitimately can do to help your
- 1:18:00paycheck. Trust no one.
- 1:18:03Verify everything and also e-mail went out to all
- 1:18:09management across the board. The radar report is to be
- 1:18:14printed and placed in a prominent place in the office on
- 1:18:19a daily basis, just not during the Mini Mail survey, but every
- 1:18:25single day. I wish they digitized that so
- 1:18:30they wouldn't be wasting so much paper to.
- 1:18:34Be honest, I wish I could. Log in.
- 1:18:35I did bring up that up to my supervisor yesterday when I got
- 1:18:40back from the route. She hadn't seen the e-mail yet,
- 1:18:43but then she found it and she did print those off.
- 1:18:46We found a place to hang them. I will make sure it gets
- 1:18:50announced to everybody tomorrow, but yes, it is definitely.
- 1:18:55That is something that's supposed to be done every single
- 1:18:58day, regardless in or out of an e-mail survey.
- 1:19:03I would just recommend asking your supervisor, postmaster,
- 1:19:07manager, where that designated spot is going to be.
- 1:19:20So on that note, Josh, anything else you want for say tonight?
- 1:19:24I'm forever holding my peace. All right.
- 1:19:27We hope you have a good week. I plan on it.
- 1:19:31I know you said it was breaking up earlier.
- 1:19:33This is going to be a short week.
- 1:19:35I already took off tomorrow because I wasn't planning on
- 1:19:37being back until later yesterday or today.
- 1:19:41So I had the one, you know that had that extra day to recoup.
- 1:19:45I work Tuesday, Wednesday, I'm off Thursday for appointments,
- 1:19:49work Friday and then Saturday. Me and the wife have planned.
- 1:19:54So it's a short week if. You get overwhelmed.
- 1:20:00Take a step back, take a deep breath, step back in.
- 1:20:04Have a good week. See y'all next time.
- 1:20:07James, your last final commentary for the evening.
- 1:20:12Well, I am glad to be going back to my route and to my customers
- 1:20:16after a week at National Convention and it definitely did
- 1:20:20not feel like a vacation there for sure, but.
- 1:20:23Had good company while I was there, so that was really made
- 1:20:26it a lot easier to handle and had people to talk to.
- 1:20:30Met some great people. So I'm looking forward to the
- 1:20:34next one in Reno, NV when that comes up.
- 1:20:37So I'm sure that one's going to be just as passionate.
- 1:20:39So I'm hoping for a really good convention next year.
- 1:20:43Honestly, I'm looking forward to this mini mail survey and
- 1:20:47getting the results back because I believe that a lot of carriers
- 1:20:50are going to see their numbers go up.
- 1:20:53So I'm hopeful for a good couple of weeks, mini mail survey with
- 1:20:57a lot of paperwork coming through and a lot of people are
- 1:21:03upset about this system. But we need to do one thing and
- 1:21:06that is be one craft, be 1 voice, be 1 union.
- 1:21:12We're all in this together and we need to support each other no
- 1:21:16matter what's going on and if things are not going the way
- 1:21:20they're supposed to be doing. And management is telling you
- 1:21:23things that they shouldn't be, especially harassing you about
- 1:21:27scans. Get with your designated union
- 1:21:30Rep, get the help. Because it's a nationwide
- 1:21:33epidemic that management has harassing carriers over these
- 1:21:36scans and we need to put a stop to it.
- 1:21:39So do your best. Hopefully your routes go up like
- 1:21:43I expect them to and we'll talk to you guys on the next episode.
- 1:21:48Well, your final words for this evening.
- 1:21:52Well, you know, I I have to thank Josh there for because I
- 1:21:57used his strategy during my nomination speech.
- 1:22:01I almost pulled the podium apart and I stepped back, visibly
- 1:22:06stepped back. I did from the podium and then
- 1:22:09stepped back in, you know, and finished off my nominations
- 1:22:13acceptance and it was the funniest thing because it you
- 1:22:16know. You know it works.
- 1:22:18You have to step back and take a breath and you know, gather
- 1:22:21yourself again. Thanks for all the support and
- 1:22:24love I get. We got from the people.
- 1:22:27You know, I have to point out, you know how much James and
- 1:22:30Kristen you know, did for me, Kristen's friends.
- 1:22:33It was awesome. It was an awesome experience and
- 1:22:36I wish the results were more to our liking.
- 1:22:38But that's the democratic process folks.
- 1:22:40So that's why we have to get involved because the fact that.
- 1:22:44We have to turn this union around to represent the
- 1:22:48carriers. That's what that's the only
- 1:22:51purpose for our national leadership is to represent,
- 1:22:55educate and promote the carriers.
- 1:22:58So everybody have a good week, be safe, hydrate, take care of
- 1:23:03each other, look out for each other and step up for those who
- 1:23:07you know aren't strong enough to step up for themselves, Be a
- 1:23:09witness for them. OK, everybody be safe.
- 1:23:14Everybody, be safe. Remember, you're the most
- 1:23:18important delivery today. Get home to your loved ones
- 1:23:20because that's the most important part of your day.
- 1:23:23Getting home to them. God bless you all.
- 1:23:28I'm just glad I was able to help one person.
- 1:23:33And I need. I needed to help because I had a
- 1:23:35guardian Angel over my left shoulder.
- 1:23:38At every clock is yes yes you did and I wasn't standing behind
- 1:23:42you on that stage during your nomination speech so but again I
- 1:23:48want to thank these guys again. Convention is not a party it is
- 1:23:53work. I I am still recovering.
- 1:23:56I said I got home late Friday night had to be back and run.
- 1:24:00Luckily I just had one the run run the one route.
- 1:24:04It was a fairly easy day. I was clocked out by 2:00 PM.
- 1:24:10It felt weird, honestly. Right back in it tomorrow,
- 1:24:14starting to train. Our one RCA that started a month
- 1:24:17ago unfortunately fell ill. He is back tomorrow.
- 1:24:22Thank you. And I, our regular carrier will
- 1:24:26be retiring at the end of the month and then it's just going
- 1:24:30to be a matter of waiting for that route to get posted.
- 1:24:33So you imagine that episode when I announced I go full time is
- 1:24:36going to be, you know, we'll have the fireworks going off or
- 1:24:39something. It's coming people.
- 1:24:42It's coming. We'll we'll congratulate you and
- 1:24:45commiserate with you because you'll be a regular and you're
- 1:24:49going to take a pay cut, right? Right.
- 1:24:53I don't know. I might break close to even
- 1:24:55beginning. As of right now it's a 45 Ki
- 1:24:57don't see it dropping. I am going to be watching like a
- 1:25:00hawk during this mini mail survey.
- 1:25:03I am going to be on that RCA that's going to be holding it
- 1:25:07down you know to continuously because I have not run this
- 1:25:11route since they started in April.
- 1:25:15So am I a little worried? Yes and no.
- 1:25:19We'll see what happens. You know, as long as it stays
- 1:25:21between the 4342 and the 45 that it is, I I'll be happy.
- 1:25:27But other than that guys have a safe week.
- 1:25:29We will be back next week. Data collected August 25th
- 1:25:34through.
