- 1:30Division, How Ego Splits Friend, Groups, Teams, and
- 1:36Communities.

- 1:42and again, hello, everyone, and welcome back to

- 1:53Who am I?
- 1:53I'm your host.

- 2:09podcast host, a graduate student, and yeah, it's
- 2:14great to be with you guys, also a
- 2:16keynote speaker, and of course, guys, a passionate
- 2:19lifelong learner.
- 2:21This show exists for one reason.
- 2:23You know what that is?
- 2:23To help you live, lead, and become, and
- 2:26connect, and be a better version of yourself
- 2:28without losing yourself in the noise because there's
- 2:30a lot of noise around society, isn't there?
- 2:33Today's episode is called Uni vs.
- 2:35Division, How Ego Splits Friend, Groups, Teams, and
- 2:39Communities, and this is a conversation we need
- 2:41to have because most division doesn't start with
- 2:45hate.
- 2:45It starts with an ego, an insecurity, a
- 2:47silence, and then from there, well, it just
- 2:51gets ugly, right?
- 2:52So let's dive.
- 2:54Let's get into it.
- 2:55If you need to get that snack, go
- 2:56get it.
- 2:57Come on back.
- 2:58Are we friends or quietly competing?
- 3:02Let me ask you something honestly.
- 3:03Are you part of a friend group or
- 3:06are you part of a low-key competition?
- 3:09I think sometimes when we're in these groups
- 3:12and we compete, the friendship dynamic kind of
- 3:17takes a back burner, and if we're not
- 3:19careful, it can stay there permanently and never
- 3:22come back because, guys, a lot of groups
- 3:25don't fall apart from conflict.
- 3:27They fall apart from comparison.
- 3:30Yes, guys, they fall apart from comparison.
- 3:33When friends start watching each other instead of
- 3:37supporting each other, well, that's a problem, and
- 3:41I know a lot of people out there
- 3:42don't want to do that, but for some
- 3:44reason, they're doing it, and they're like, oh,
- 3:46no, I didn't want to do that, but
- 3:48then, see, they did that.
- 3:52That's the whole point that I want to
- 3:53make you guys aware of, a very, very
- 3:55important thing to be aware of, all right,
- 3:58and you might be saying to me, John,
- 4:00well, that doesn't happen to me.
- 4:01Well, maybe it doesn't, but I still think
- 4:04it's important that you become aware of what's
- 4:08happening, why things are happening, how things are
- 4:11making changes in your life.
- 4:12I mean, that's the important thing.
- 4:15If you can be aware of those things,
- 4:18then maybe you can change your life, okay,
- 4:25but again, it does not happen, guys, overnight.
- 4:33I'll tell you that sometimes, we get lost
- 4:36in all this noise around our universe, right?
- 4:39It happens, and we don't know why it
- 4:41happens, but we know it happens, and then
- 4:44by the time we realize that it might
- 4:45be too late to actually do anything, so
- 4:47we're like, oh, my gosh, what am I
- 4:48supposed to do now, right?
- 4:51It's about supporting each other, and I think
- 4:52sometimes we miss the boat on that because
- 4:56we're so caught up in our own lives
- 4:58that we don't do anything, that we decide,
- 5:01well, hey, I don't need to do this,
- 5:02and really, you do need to do this,
- 5:05all right?
- 5:06I want to tell you that, really, you
- 5:07do need to do this, and you have
- 5:08to be understanding that what you're working on
- 5:12is about you becoming a better version of
- 5:18yourself, and if you can't become a better
- 5:22version of yourself, how can you ever help
- 5:24others, right?
- 5:28That's an important thing to know is how
- 5:35this works and how the dynamic can affect
- 5:39you, and I think the dynamics of our
- 5:47life, they're probably changing a lot more than
- 5:52many years past.
- 5:56You know, we've got technology that's morphing, and
- 5:59we've got people that are, well, let's say
- 6:03only digitally social.
- 6:06They don't want to do anything in real
- 6:07life, and I think that becomes a huge
- 6:09problem for people, so ladies and gentlemen, when
- 6:11success feels awkward instead of celebrated, that's when
- 6:15we got to step back.
- 6:17That's when we have to say, wait a
- 6:19minute, and I've had those questions, and I
- 6:21say, you know, just because we can doesn't
- 6:23mean we should, and that's a real hard
- 6:28dynamic for a lot of people to learn.
- 6:31How do we embrace that?
- 6:33How?
- 6:36And it comes down to going back to
- 6:39your core values, your core values.
- 6:45Your core values are interesting, but your core
- 6:50values are what make you do what you
- 6:54do every day, okay?
- 6:56I think that's an important piece that many
- 7:00people don't realize, and I think that's a
- 7:07very important thing to understand is that it
- 7:14is about those things, and maybe you get
- 7:20lost with that.
- 7:25And maybe you're saying to me, and you're
- 7:31saying, well, how do I handle that?
- 7:35And you might say, John, well, I don't
- 7:37know how you handle that, and so maybe
- 7:43you're going to say to me, John, I
- 7:44don't know what I'm supposed to do because
- 7:46I'm getting mixed messages.
- 7:55That's important, all right?
- 7:58That's very important to understand, and maybe you're
- 8:02going to say to me, hey, John, you
- 8:04know, it doesn't actually work the way you
- 8:07expect it to work, okay?
- 8:12Maybe not, and I will tell you that
- 8:17because people don't get the concept that they're
- 8:24currently living within, right?
- 8:27And I think the reason that happens is
- 8:29because, well, let's face it.
- 8:31They get stuck in this way, and
- 8:41then this way says, well, gee, what am
- 8:43I supposed to do?
- 8:45And then the way doesn't get out of
- 8:47the way for you to do anything, and
- 8:49they're like, oh, my gosh, well, how do
- 8:50I do things?
- 8:52How do I become that better version of
- 8:55myself?
- 8:58And I know that that's a very hard
- 9:01thing for a lot of people.
- 9:05They don't realize, you know, how being silent
- 9:09is actually still making a move.
- 9:12So doing nothing is still doing something, right?
- 9:17As I said, when success feels awkward, instead
- 9:20of celebrating, we got to back up and
- 9:22say, wait a minute, what am I doing?
- 9:24What am I being a part of, right?
- 9:26Those are very important questions that we need
- 9:29to ask ourselves.
- 9:31When wins are met with silence instead of
- 9:33joy, I know sometimes that turns resentment, but
- 9:37it's not about turning resentment.
- 9:39It's about how can we embrace the world
- 9:41to become a better place?
- 9:45Yeah, I know.
- 9:47That's a hard one for a lot of
- 9:50people, right?
- 9:52It's a hard one because people don't necessarily
- 9:55know what they don't know, right?
- 9:59They don't understand that concept.
- 10:03They don't understand the fact that, you know,
- 10:05if I'm happy, you should be happy too.
- 10:07And when you're happy, I'm going to be
- 10:09happy because of your being happy.
- 10:11But a lot of people just, they miss
- 10:13this whole point.
- 10:15And the point is that people don't think
- 10:21they can do it the right way, all
- 10:25right?
- 10:26And the reason this is because we're eluding
- 10:33ourselves, okay?
- 10:42And so if we believe one thing, but
- 10:47it's not true, and we live our whole
- 10:51life on that basis, but now our core
- 10:56values are being, how can I say?
- 10:59They're being compromised.
- 11:01Well, that's a big problem.
- 11:03Um, that affects our direction, right?
- 11:07Um, and guys, that's not unity.
- 11:09That is rivalry, okay?
- 11:12Um, wearing a smile is not something that
- 11:17everybody does every single day.
- 11:20Why?
- 11:22I think it's because people, again, get stuck.
- 11:33And they get stuck.
- 11:34And then when they're so hard stuck, they
- 11:38become even more frustrated that they don't want
- 11:40to do anything in life, right?
- 11:43That's a, that's a, that's a really, um,
- 11:46okay.
- 11:48That's important, all right?
- 11:56And I know what you're saying to me,
- 11:58John.
- 11:58I know you're saying, well, John, you know,
- 12:00I'm busy.
- 12:01I got my family.
- 12:02I got my life.
- 12:03I got my job.
- 12:04I get it.
- 12:05But you see, these are only small parts
- 12:07of your life.
- 12:08They're not, they're not everything.
- 12:09We have to balance everything.
- 12:11So we have to balance if we're doing
- 12:13sports, uh, relationships, business.
- 12:17We have to balance everything.
- 12:19So even though your family is very important
- 12:21to you, your relationship is very important to
- 12:22you, it's one part of your life.
- 12:24It's a big part.
- 12:25But there are other parts too that need
- 12:27to have their dynamic.
- 12:29And when we don't give those pieces the
- 12:32true dynamic that they deserve, well, our life
- 12:36feels like it falls on deaf ears.
- 12:41Them versus you mentality, right?
- 12:43Energy destroys groups fast when we say them
- 12:47versus you.
- 12:49Why aren't we all just working together in
- 12:51a group?
- 12:52Why are we all about them versus me
- 12:54or you or he or she?
- 12:56Why are we doing that?
- 12:58Why are we playing this game?
- 13:00Why are we, um, trying to say, you
- 13:03know, we're better than them?
- 13:04Why can't we work together for the greater
- 13:07good of all concerned?
- 13:07That's like the multi-billion dollar question I
- 13:09love to ask people, but I never get
- 13:11a truthful answer.
- 13:13I basically get told, well, John, you know,
- 13:15um, it's just the way it is.
- 13:19Well, it doesn't have to be that way.
- 13:23Ladies and gentlemen, the moment a group splits
- 13:26into I'm with them, not you, energy trust
- 13:31starts leaking.
- 13:34I'm with them, not with you.
- 13:37That's a bold move to say that, first
- 13:39of all.
- 13:40And not only is it rude and disrespectful,
- 13:46it starts to erode not just your trust
- 13:49in the group, but it starts to compromise
- 13:51everything maybe the group was formed on.
- 13:54And then it becomes these cliche cliques, right?
- 13:56You know, the ones I mean, like from
- 13:58high school or grammar school, right?
- 14:00These cliques.
- 14:02And nobody planned these cliques to happen, but
- 14:06they do.
- 14:08And when they do, it's like, there's no
- 14:10way to go back and say, how do
- 14:13we undo this?
- 14:14How do we prepare something, right?
- 14:20Think about it.
- 14:27I think a lot of people get confused,
- 14:37okay?
- 14:40And it's okay.
- 14:44And the reason I say it's okay is
- 14:47because in your life, guys, it becomes about
- 14:57that, okay?
- 15:06And maybe you're going to say to me,
- 15:08John, like, this doesn't make a lot of
- 15:11sense, okay?
- 15:20Maybe you're wondering why something is a certain
- 15:23way.
- 15:23Maybe.
- 15:25But then maybe you're not, right?
- 15:38What I think is that sometimes we just
- 15:52fall out of something, right?
- 15:57You know, sometimes the way you are changes
- 16:00in life.
- 16:10Does that make sense?
- 16:15If we can understand that, then maybe we
- 16:20can realize how our future has changed.
- 16:36How has it changed?
- 16:37How is it different from yesterday?
- 16:44And I'll say it's different from yesterday because
- 16:47it just is.
- 16:56It just is.
- 17:04And that's something that many people don't understand.
- 17:15They don't necessarily get what it's about.
- 17:19They think they get it, but then
- 17:34they go through this hiatus and say, okay,
- 17:37how can I be different, right?
- 17:40But by being different, they alienate not only
- 17:43themselves, but also the rest of the group.
- 17:45Now, group chats go quiet, right?
- 17:47When things like this happen, like I said,
- 17:48when we erode that trust.
- 17:50Side conversations tend to pop up, right?
- 17:53And people start choosing alliances instead of solutions.
- 17:57And I think that's a huge big no
- 18:01-no, right?
- 18:10And maybe you're saying to me, John, it's
- 18:13not about what I think today.
- 18:22It's about the feeling I get going forward,
- 18:27right?
- 18:29And I think that's a very interesting way
- 18:34of thinking about it, right?
- 18:37It's interesting because we don't necessarily get what
- 18:42that is.
- 18:44And then we're left to feel that maybe
- 18:47we're on the wrong track, okay?
- 18:55Maybe we're on the wrong track.
- 19:00Has it ever happened to you?
- 19:09Does that make sense to anybody?
- 19:18Maybe you've asked yourself certain questions, and maybe
- 19:20you just can't figure out why something is
- 19:22a certain way, right?
- 19:26And that can be a very interesting thing,
- 19:30right?
- 19:31It could be a very interesting thing that
- 19:34maybe you're clueless about.
- 19:42And that one thing could change everything in
- 19:46your life.
- 19:49Let's think of this for one moment.
- 19:50Let's pretend that if one thing changed in
- 19:54your life, it would change everything.
- 20:09Maybe you believe something was a certain way,
- 20:12but then you suddenly found out or you
- 20:14learned it was something different.
- 20:15Now it's different.
- 20:29Does that make sense?
- 20:36And I think if we could just pretend
- 20:40that a premise changed, how would that affect
- 20:48your life, right?
- 20:50How would it affect your life?
- 21:03How would it affect your life today?
- 21:11And if you're saying to me, John, it's
- 21:13not going to affect anything, I'm going to
- 21:14tell you you're wrong because it is going
- 21:15to affect something.
- 21:17When we change a core belief, right, about
- 21:23something we've thought about for a long time,
- 21:25and now we suddenly take that, it's like
- 21:27we've taken all the legs off of a
- 21:33chair, or even two legs off, or even
- 21:37taking one leg of a chair would cause
- 21:38it to collapse, right?
- 21:40It's that kind of a thing, right?
- 21:54Maybe it's something that you'd say to me,
- 21:57John, I don't know.
- 22:09Maybe you're going to say that's impossible, but
- 22:13I'm here to tell you guys it's not
- 22:14impossible.
- 22:18Think about one thing that you believe that's
- 22:21true, okay?
- 22:22Now let's pretend that it changes.
- 22:33I think that if I suddenly gave you,
- 22:38let's say, a definition about something, and you
- 22:42knew your whole life this is what it
- 22:43was about, but now it's changed, that's going
- 22:49to affect who you are and the premises
- 22:52you operate from.
- 22:57And we talk about what happens when groups
- 22:59erode.
- 23:01A group suddenly becomes not connected anymore.
- 23:05It becomes about positioning.
- 23:08Now you get things like silent flex wars
- 23:10creating all kinds of factions.
- 23:12The most division isn't loud, guys, it is
- 23:15subtle.
- 23:17It's that flex that wasn't necessary.
- 23:20The story told a little too strategically.
- 23:24The success shared without humility.
- 23:27These silent flex wars turn friends into factions.
- 23:34Now you might be saying, John, what is
- 23:37a faction?
- 23:38I knew you were going to ask me
- 23:39that.
- 23:40So a faction is a small or often
- 23:42contentious group within a large organization, political party
- 23:45or society, united by shared interests or goals
- 23:48that differ from the majority.
- 23:49For example, let's say there was a group
- 23:51formed on, let's say, healthy habits for students.
- 24:00And that's what the whole group is formed
- 24:02around.
- 24:03But now there's two or three people in
- 24:05the group that suddenly believe that healthy is
- 24:11only good if it can be cheaper.
- 24:15And they're secretly plotting and telling everyone that,
- 24:20you know, that's what we stand for.
- 24:21We're the real nutrition people, not like three
- 24:23or four people.
- 24:23And you got 50 people in the group,
- 24:24and now you're like creating this whole division.
- 24:27And now you're getting people that are not
- 24:29supporting the group because it's like you're forming
- 24:32your own group that isn't a group.
- 24:34It's nuts.
- 24:35So as I said, these silent flex wars
- 24:37turn friends into factions and teammates into rivals.
- 24:41Overnight, guys, every community faces a loyalty test.
- 24:46I don't care whether it's a neighborhood.
- 24:47I don't care whether it's work, whether it's
- 24:51volunteers in an organization.
- 24:54It happens.
- 24:55Every group, every team, every community eventually hits
- 24:58a roadblock, a moment where loyalty is tested.
- 25:02And are you going to stay loyal or
- 25:04are you going to just do what you
- 25:07want to do?
- 25:08Not loyalty to a person, loyalty to principles.
- 25:11And what I like to call these guys
- 25:12is loyalty to core values.
- 25:15Okay, loyalty to core values.
- 25:23Does that make sense?
- 25:25I hope it does.
- 25:32And if that makes sense, then maybe we
- 25:42need to guard our principles very well.
- 25:58And that might be something that you're wrestling
- 26:01with, okay?
- 26:07Just maybe.
- 26:13And if you're telling me, John, it doesn't,
- 26:15I'm going to tell you to step back
- 26:17and let me know.
- 26:20Because things in your life, when the core
- 26:23principles, when the primary legs of the chair
- 26:27get pulled out from with under you, it
- 26:30doesn't support anymore.
- 26:31Will we choose honesty or comfort?
- 26:35Will we choose growth or will we choose
- 26:37an ego, right?
- 26:39You and you're being right.
- 26:41That moment defines everything that comes next.
- 26:44Identity built on others shrinks you.
- 26:47I belong to this creator.
- 26:49I'm with this coach.
- 26:50I follow this leader, right?
- 26:53Here's the truth.
- 26:54When your identity is built around someone else,
- 26:56you shrink yourself.
- 26:57You stop thinking independently.
- 26:58You stop growing freely.
- 27:00You stop becoming who you're meant to be.
- 27:02You and you should expand you, not make
- 27:04you smaller.
- 27:05So take this information and let it grow
- 27:07you.
- 27:08Let it be a part of you.
- 27:09Stand culture versus self-respect.
- 27:12There's a difference between admiration and attachment.
- 27:15And when loyalty turns into identity, self-respect
- 27:17starts disappearing.
- 27:18You don't need to defend someone else's mistakes.
- 27:22Basically to feel connected.
- 27:23You don't need to attack others to prove
- 27:25allegiance.
- 27:26That's not unity.
- 27:27That's insecurity.
- 27:28How leaders accidentally create division is a problem.
- 27:31Leaders don't always divide intentionally.
- 27:33Sometimes it's favoritism.
- 27:35Sometimes it's silence.
- 27:36Sometimes it's rewarding loyalty over truth.
- 27:38But when people feel ranked instead of valued,
- 27:40division becomes inevitable.
- 27:42Real leadership doesn't collect followers, guys.
- 27:44It builds trust.
- 27:46Gossip is cheap.
- 27:47Team building is the key.
- 27:49Let's be honest.
- 27:50Gossip feels like bonding because it avoids vulnerability.
- 27:54But it's just a disguise.
- 27:55But gossip isn't communication.
- 27:57It's fear.
- 27:58Fear of honest conversation.
- 27:59Fear of confrontation.
- 28:00Fear of accountability.
- 28:02And it always costs more than it pays.
- 28:05Before picking sides, ask these questions.
- 28:07Before you jump in, someone else's drama.
- 28:10Ask yourself, is this my issue to solve?
- 28:14Am I reacting or responding?
- 28:16Will this choice bring clarity or chaos?
- 28:18Because picking sides without context creates damage you
- 28:21can't undo.
- 28:22Healthy debates versus disrespect.
- 28:24Disachievement isn't devotion.
- 28:26But disrespect disguised as honesty is.
- 28:30Healthy debates leave room for dignity.
- 28:34Disrespect needs dominance.
- 28:36Know the difference.
- 28:37Supporting friends without cosigning harm.
- 28:40Supporting someone doesn't mean defending every decision they
- 28:43make.
- 28:43Real support tells the truth.
- 28:45Real care holds standards.
- 28:47Real love doesn't enable harm.
- 28:49If your loyalty costs your integrity, it's too
- 28:52expensive.
- 28:53Unity without becoming a...
- 28:55And unity does not mean self-abandonment.
- 28:58You can be kind and firm, loving and
- 29:00boundary.
- 29:01Connected without being controlled.
- 29:03Healthy unity respects individuality.
- 29:06Why us versus them feels powerful?
- 29:08Division feels powerful because it simplifies complexity.
- 29:13But it also freezes growth.
- 29:15And when you define yourself by opposition, you
- 29:17stop evolving.
- 29:19Growth requires curiosity, not enemies.
- 29:21And what real unity looks like?
- 29:23Real unity isn't loud, guys.
- 29:25It's coordinated.
- 29:26It's purpose-driven.
- 29:27It's mutually respectable.
- 29:29It's group moving in the same direction, even
- 29:31with different roles.
- 29:33Orbiting versus building.
- 29:34Some groups aren't building.
- 29:36They're just orbiting around.
- 29:39Hanging out, talking, eventing.
- 29:40But without shared purpose, proximity doesn't become progress.
- 29:45How jealousy starts.
- 29:48One win.
- 29:48No conversation.
- 29:50A lot of assumptions.
- 29:51That's all it takes, guys.
- 29:53Jealousy grows.
- 29:55A mature flex.
- 29:56Here's the real flex.
- 29:57I refuse to be weaponized against people I
- 29:59care about.
- 30:01That's emotional intelligence.
- 30:03That's leadership.
- 30:05That's growth.
- 30:06When to leave instead of fix.
- 30:07Not every divided space is yours to heal.
- 30:09Sometimes leaving is self-respect, not failure.
- 30:12And peace is not quitting.
- 30:14It's choosing alignment.
- 30:15Why real leaders, guys?
- 30:18Refuse division.
- 30:19Strong leaders don't allow their name to become
- 30:21a badge.
- 30:22They don't need sides.
- 30:23They don't need tribes.
- 30:24They don't need loyalty tests.
- 30:26They build environments, not gangs.
- 30:29Conflict, ladies and gentlemen, rules for friendship.
- 30:32That's adult friendship.
- 30:34Adults don't avoid conflict.
- 30:36They handle it.
- 30:37Direct conversations.
- 30:38Clear boundaries.
- 30:39No secret alliances.
- 30:40That's how trust survives.
