- 2:51You see her on WOWK TV thirteen. But and she may very well be
- 2:57the last person from thirteen that's not been the show. We're gonna change that
- 3:00today. Marrily mccauliffe is here, Merrily, good morning and welcome to the
- 3:04show. Good morning to you, Dave, and good morning to all of
- 3:06your wonderful listeners. How about Chef Paul, goodlove to him, I mean
- 3:08absolutely, I mean I had him on the show on Friday. Yeah,
- 3:10good luck to him. And again, as I said, on the show,
- 3:14and I had he and Evan Osborne on the show on Friday, Merrily,
- 3:16it is really putting Charleston, West Virginia on the map. I mean,
- 3:22well you put us up there with I mean Charlotte, Atlanta because we're
- 3:27in the southeast, reason Nashville and oh yeah, by the way, Charleston,
- 3:30West Virginia. And he's such a humble guy. He is. He's
- 3:32a fantastic human being. He really really is. And he's been very very
- 3:36very good to the show, very good to all that. He's on Hotline
- 3:38a lot with the Coop and weekly does a does a great job. So
- 3:42we'll all be watching tonight and be following along. And again that event at
- 3:45Capitol Mark. I think it's getting close to sold out. If it's not
- 3:47already, just contact the folks at Capitol Mark and they'll let you know more
- 3:51about that. Now, I know you get this a lot. And I
- 3:53got a couple of reasons why you're on the show today, not just to
- 3:55talk about yourself, but the name merely, it's not a So what's the
- 4:00story? You know what, I'm about to blow your mind. So my
- 4:03name is marily mccauliffe, but my real name is here you go, oh
- 4:10yeah, my real name is actually Mary Lillian Vance. But I've always gone
- 4:15by Merrily. As a kid. My mom had a friend named Merrily,
- 4:21and I think what she was trying to do was I think originally she was
- 4:25trying to figure out a nickname, and she sort of smushed together my first
- 4:29and middle name Mary and Lillian and just was like, oh, you know
- 4:31what, let's just nickname Merrily. And it just stuck. So I have
- 4:34always gone by Merrily. I thought radio people were the only people that didn't
- 4:39use the ruins aliens for sure. I mean, well, it comes in
- 4:43handy from time to time, having in eightly, so I will say that.
- 4:46And something a lot of people may not know is that you are one
- 4:50of triplets. It's true. So I'm a triplet. I'm one of three.
- 4:55I have two wonderful brothers. We are fraternal, so we have different
- 4:59hair color, color, blood type, personality. They're back home in Richmond
- 5:02and other stuff. Let's leave it at that. Well, go ahead,
- 5:06that's right. Uh. And they're back home in Richmond, Virginia, and
- 5:10they're just they're just wonderful, wonderful folks. They've got one just had a
- 5:15baby with him and his wife just had a baby, and then the other
- 5:16one is welcoming a baby too. Gender revial party soon, all right.
- 5:20And Richmond is home for you. That's where you where you come from.
- 5:24And an alum of Concord University Concord. They don't call it campus beautiful for
- 5:28nothing. I loved Concord. I really I had such a tremendous experience at
- 5:31Concord when I was there, and just a wonderful place, great great people.
- 5:35And I think that that sort of started, certainly started with just my
- 5:40love for the Mountain state and why I am still here. Do you know
- 5:43my producer Ryan Nicholson just let me know he's also from Richmond. How about
- 5:46it? I didn't know, Okay, do you guys have like certain language
- 5:50that you'll be able to speak that no one else will understand. You know,
- 5:54I'm so far removed that maybe he could tell me that. So how
- 5:58long have you been with thirteen? Oh gosh, you know what? Actually
- 6:00my ten year anniversary is July fourteenth? All right? And where were you
- 6:04on television before you came here? So before w w K and Charleston,
- 6:09I was actually at fifty nine news WVNSR sister station in Beckley for a few
- 6:13Okay, okay, So was this something you always wanted to do? Was
- 6:15me on TV? Well? I think it started out doing I was more
- 6:20into video editing, and I sort of was leaning towards commercials I liked.
- 6:27I visited the ad agency in Richmond, and I really enjoyed doing that.
- 6:30So when I was in Concord, I was dabbling in a little bit of
- 6:33video editing. But you know, when you're in the broadcasting program, they
- 6:38make you do a little bit of everything. But I mean I was also
- 6:41doing like I did a little bit of sideline reporting. But really it was
- 6:45just I only knew what was going on with our high school. It was
- 6:46very just sort of getting my feet wet SOPA, just sort of learning a
- 6:50little bit about that. So I had been in front of a microphone,
- 6:54but I never would have imagined that this would be my career. And I
- 6:58love this so much. I love doing this. What do they have you
- 7:00doing now? Specifically on thirteen? Okay, so on thirteen News right now,
- 7:03I'm the host of Good Day at four, which is at four pm.
- 7:06It's an hour long show. I wanted the sort of our our slogan
- 7:11to be good Day at four before the Bad News at five that go over.
- 7:15I like it, and then I also do the noon show. So
- 7:18the noon show is a half hour show, and then the four o'clock hour
- 7:23long is sort of it's refreshing. It's a lot of good, good news
- 7:26stories, and we like to highlight folks in the community and the good stuff
- 7:30going on. I cut your show yesterday morning on the weekend edition. I
- 7:32saw that yesterday morning. That's right. We also have a weekend show.
- 7:36I do our Good Day Weekend Edition sort of carries on from the four PM
- 7:41and so it's Good Day Weekend Edition, same type of content, and it's
- 7:46every Saturday and Sunday morning beginning at eight thirty. Talking to Marily mccalluff again
- 7:49for WWK TV thirteen, The Dave Alan Show and five Any Line Bright to

- 8:09zero one one zero four for fresh Air because everyone deserves fresh air. Now
- 8:11I have a reason to have you on the show today. Actually had a
- 8:15couple of things that you wanted to bring up. But you've got a big
- 8:16community service project that you folks are going to be involved in. We like
- 8:22to publicize things going on in the community, I mean, because you guys
- 8:24are certainly good to us and publicizing things that we have going on. But
- 8:28you got something big going on you wanted to talk about. Yeah, So
- 8:31Next Star which is our parent company at WWK, Every year in June they
- 8:37have their Founder's Day of Caring, which is when all the stations in the
- 8:41country go out and do community service. And we're teaming up with Habitsat for
- 8:46Humanity once again, which is such a great organization and doing such great work
- 8:48and it's great to be on the job site. We have to build and
- 8:54I mean literally build a home, or we'll work in the restore as part
- 8:58of that day as well. And so it's giving food who are maybe not
- 9:01dealt the best hand an opportunity to have a home. It's a it's a
- 9:05tremendous project. So now you guys are actually going to be out there hammering
- 9:09and oh yeah, I mean we are fully building a home. Is that
- 9:11is that your forte because it's not mine. I'm gonna say, Dave,
- 9:15I actually love doing home improvement projects. Really yeah, I mean drywall.
- 9:20Uh you know, I'll tell you and I know I'm here talking somebody from
- 9:24thirteen, but I don't know how well you know Hannah Klein, it's from
- 9:26CHS. Hannah. That's what she does. And that's that's so you guys
- 9:31could start a firm, you know, I mean, you know, I
- 9:33mean, that's why I had Hannah on the show a couple of months ago.
- 9:35That's what she actually does in her spare time is drywall. Some people
- 9:43play golf, some people Hannah drywalls. So so you you know, the
- 9:46you guys could work together. I mean, yeah, that could be your
- 9:48hook. You know you've seen us on TV. Now let us come hang
- 9:52out in your house and do your drywall. There you have it. It's
- 9:56fun. I mean, my husband and are in the process of renovating our
- 9:58home and so I'm just I'm of that mindset where it's like, there's something
- 10:03to do, just get it done. And it went from painting to just
- 10:05doing everything around that needed to be done. So I sort of inadvertently fell
- 10:09into this love of home improvement, good stuff. It's great again that we're
- 10:13talking with Marylyn McCollough from A thirteen. So what's the timeframe? What do
- 10:16you need from the listeners of my listeners about this project? You support?
- 10:20You need donations? Okay? So right, just want to carry a ladder?
- 10:24What do you need? Gotcha? So if you would like to donate
- 10:28during a NEXTROSS Founder's Day of Cary, you can head to our website wwk
- 10:31TV dot com. We have links posted there. But also you can always
- 10:35had to habitat for Humanity's website off the top of my head and see what
- 10:39they're doing, because they are They really heavily rely on volunteers, so I
- 10:43would encourage folks to help them out for sure. And you also, I
- 10:48know, are an animal lover. I love animals, I do. And
- 10:50our dog, Pebbles, I love her so much. We got her from
- 10:54the Canal Charleston Humane Association, which they're doing such great work, and I'm
- 10:58so thankful for for what they do in the community, and for all the
- 11:03rescue organizations out there for that matter. That's not easy work, and I'm
- 11:07so thankful for what they do because the alternative, I don't know where my
- 11:09dog would be. We have a little wiener dog. She's a dogs and
- 11:13of all kinds, so she's just the sweetest dog. I'm so thankful for
- 11:16her. I mean, animals are much better than people in my opinion,
- 11:20you know, I say it all the time. I say, I'm not
- 11:22so much on people, but animals. Oh yeah. My wife and I
- 11:26are are cat people, not that we don't like dogs, but our lifestyle
- 11:30is really more conducive to cats because cats are pretty self efficient. Our cat
- 11:33never goes out of the house, has no desire to. He looks out
- 11:37the window, you open the door, He's like, hey, I mean
- 11:37I'm not going out there, you know, as long as he can look
- 11:39at the birds. Man that's all. They cared. You also told me,
- 11:43and before we let you go, you also said we were talking in
- 11:46the green room about what you want to talk about. You want to talk
- 11:48about the Humane Association. You also wanted to talk about your project for Habitat
- 11:54Humanity, but you said you wanted to thank somebody talk about that our Lord
- 11:58and Savior have at it. Well, you know this is this is really
- 12:03going to catch a lot of people off guard that have known me for a
- 12:05long time. Well, we found out that your name is really not merely
- 12:07McCallum. So we found that out. So go ahead, right, we're
- 12:11really getting to know me. This is going to catch people off guard that
- 12:16have known me for a long time. But I recently welcomed Jesus Christ as
- 12:18my Lord and Savior to hang with me. I hope that me proclaiming this,
- 12:24that it might encourage even just one person to welcome Jesus into their life
- 12:28or encourage them to get to know Christ. He's working miracles in my life.
- 12:31And I'm so thankful, Right, are you thankful for my faith?
- 12:35Really? And truly good stuff, good stuff. Well, don't let this
- 12:37be the last time you're on the show. You have to hang out.
- 12:39I've got Mayor Scott James coming in in just a couple of moments. Stuff
- 12:43happened this weekend for sure. I mean it's like you're gonna bring about three
- 12:46or four thousand people to Saint Albans this weekend. So it's a good to
- 12:50have you guys taken part in any of that. Always, you know,
- 12:52I know you have people there because you always do in the community. Yeah,
- 12:54you know. I was at toward cole well yakfest. I was on
- 12:58the then, and it is a party. I mean, that is a
- 13:01really good time. So folks, if you're listening and have not attended Tordy
- 13:05Cole or have been on the river during this, do it just coming down
- 13:09for the party if nothing else. Yeah, but Mary James will tell you
- 13:11all about it. But it really is. It's a terrific time. All
- 13:13right, Merrily, I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot. You
- 13:16do a great job. Man. We're looking forward to having you on the
- 13:18show again. I appreciate you, Dave, and you've got great listeners at

- 17:15Good morning, sir, Welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave.
- 17:18Thank you for having me. It's a hard act to follow. Following
- 17:21Marly McCullough, Well, sure it is. I told her, I said,
- 17:23you know, maryor Lee, you got a face for TV, I
- 17:26got a face for radio. Yeah, that's so. Do I so do
- 17:29I So? I suppose before we get anything else, congratulations or in order,
- 17:33well, thank you because you you've won an election since the last time
- 17:36you were in there. Yep, we won. We were very pleased.
- 17:38We thought four to five hundred vote victory would be big, but we won
- 17:42bo over nine hundred and people saying I spoke, they like the direction we're
- 17:47moving in. What is it and you kind of just touching them? What
- 17:51is it about about the message or the work that you and your administration are
- 17:56doing in Saint Albans that seems to make voters want to turn out to vote
- 18:00for you again. Well, Saint Albans is back on the map and we're
- 18:03moving forward. Main Street had what seven or eight empty buildings when we took
- 18:08office. Today there's one. We filled three buildings over at the Saint Albans
- 18:14Mall, We've brought other businesses in, and you know, we've increased our
- 18:21role being O. Taxes tremendously went up over a million dollars in six years.
- 18:29In the community. Our size is tremendous and that allows us to do
- 18:33more things. We'll put more money into parks and wreck Our police and fire
- 18:37department are big priorities and I'll put them up against any department in the state.
- 18:42So you know, I'm surrounded with great people, council, employees,
- 18:48volunteers. I try to use some common sense and just lead day. Talking
- 18:52again with St Albans Mayor Scott James, how's the business climate in Saint Albans,
- 18:56Because it seems like every time I'm down there that there's a new business
- 19:00coming in of some sort, not only on old Meme but in these surrounding
- 19:03areas. I mean, I know you always want more business, but how
- 19:07are things going over all? Overall they're going good. One of the issues
- 19:11we have is we're so landlocked in St. Albans. One of the priorities
- 19:17would be we've got to get some annexation so we can expand and have property
- 19:22to bring not just businesses in but also industry. You know, but you
- 19:29know that's an uphill battle anytime you go to annex, so that's a big
- 19:34chore ahead of us. But the business climate overall is very good. We
- 19:38started a program a few years back we being o attacks. First year you
- 19:44only pay twenty five percent, second year fifty, third year seventy five percent,
- 19:48and in the fourth year you're on the full rate. So you know
- 19:52that gives new businesses a little bit of break to put that money back into
- 19:56their business and invest in themselves. And I know that you've had quite a
- 20:00few demolition projects, oh and sat talk about those. We've torn down over
- 20:04forty three structures since I took office. Our building Inspector Marshall Cheney started this
- 20:11program where we approached owners of dilapidated structures and we would pay for the demolition
- 20:21if they paid the dump fee. Then we took up money from the dump
- 20:23fee and put it back into the account to get more houses torn down.
- 20:27But because we started that program, we received in the first round five hundred
- 20:33and forty thousand dollars in grant money from d EP and the last of that
- 20:37was used to go towards the Junior High tearing it down and this round we
- 20:42got one hundred and eighty two thousand, and we're in the process of working
- 20:48on and get those properties condemned and get them torn down. Talking again with

- 21:22plan on getting some pickleball facilities. That's all the rage, man is pickleball.
- 21:27It is. We actually are looking at a location in Saint Albans at
- 21:32leveling out, repaving and putting up starting out with two pickleball courts. I
- 21:37don't have a time frame on it. We've got to get the costs.
- 21:40We don't think there's going to be a lot of cost involved. You know,
- 21:42you've got to get to netting the polls. You've got to get the
- 21:48diagram for the lines. But you know, we have somebody that can paint
- 21:52the lines for uce and that would be a good start. Eventually, I
- 21:55would like to have probably four to five pickleball. It's in St Albans.
- 22:00I mean, it's amazing. It's somebody I know, you're a sports guy.
- 22:03It is amazing how popular. I mean, I've got had Johnny Rutherford
- 22:06on the show last week. What they're doing over in Nitro right now,
- 22:10and I know other areas of the state are getting involved in this too.
- 22:11It's huge, it is. It's probably the fastest growing sport that it is
- 22:18out there right now. And the good thing about pick a ball and I
- 22:21used to play tennis, Dave and I love tennis, but pick a ball
- 22:23is a smaller court and people of all ages can plush sure, you know,
- 22:27so it's inclusive for everybody. And so that is our game plan right
- 22:34now on pick a ball court. I wanted to have you on. I
- 22:37always like to have you on and all the mayors for that matter, do
- 22:38update things going on in their cities. But your big event is coming up
- 22:44this weekend, big weekend for Saint Albans. We got Yakfest June fourteenth.
- 22:49June fifteenth, starting at four o'clock on Friday, starts at two o'clock on
- 22:53Saturday. Then at eight o'clock Saturday morning, the largest flatwater kayaking event hits
- 23:02the river in Meadowood Park out Tornado, travels twelve miles down and gets out
- 23:07in Saint Albans. So it's gonna be a huge weekend. The weather's supposed
- 23:11to be nice, a little hot, but you're in the water, yeah
- 23:15for the most part. Yeah, yeah, I'm going to to coal.
- 23:18Well, one thing I recommend, you know, I know a lot of
- 23:21people like drinking cold beer going down the river, but have some bottles of
- 23:23water too. Yeah yeah, yeah, because you know, I like beer
- 23:27as much as the next person, but that doesn't really hydrate you. That's
- 23:30kind of the opposite. So you got to have get just a few bottles
- 23:33of water to throw in there as well. How many years has this been
- 23:36going on the tor to Coal. I think this is the twentieth or twenty
- 23:40first year, and like I said, it has been deemed as the largest
- 23:47flat water kayaking event in the country. So the Coal River Group's done a
- 23:51tremendous job of cleaning up the entire col River system maybe eight miles stretch,
- 23:56and they started this twenty twenty one years ago as a fundraiser. It's not
- 24:00a race. You know, if you want to go fast, you can
- 24:02go fast, but you know, it's turned into a twelve mile party.
- 24:07To be honest with you. People sit along the river banks and out water
- 24:10snakes, different things like that. There's boats on the river. We asked
- 24:15that boaters and people on jets kes please keep in mind we're going to have
- 24:22probably eighteen hundred two thousand kayakers coming down the river, so please be careful
- 24:29and give them priority, please. And where are these people coming from?
- 24:32What are some of the areas Maybe in the past couple of years that you've
- 24:33talked to somebody and said, hey, I'm from We've had them as far
- 24:37away as Texas come in for the Torticol And so we usually have people from
- 24:44about fifteen different states. Of course, a lot of them are right here
- 24:47in West Virginia. All over the state of West Virginia, and so it's
- 24:52become a big event for outdoor enthusiasts and kayakers, I mean across the country.
- 24:59It's huge. As you said, this is the largest one of its
- 25:00kind. It is, it is. And then you know Friday night will
- 25:06be having Yakfest music playing from four to ten. Now explain to us.
- 25:11I've had every year I have you on the show, Mayor. But in
- 25:14the case, somebody hit me up today and said, what exactly does yak
- 25:17Fest mean? It's a kayak festival. Yeah, okay, but that's just
- 25:19the shorten Yeah, yak Fest. There are no real yaks, No,
- 25:22no real yaks, but we do have a mascot, kay that's a yak.
- 25:27Okay. Yeah. So but you know, I approached Bill the year
- 25:33we were running my first term back in March, and I approached him about
- 25:37a festival around toward the cold and his eyes lit up. Bill Curry Ye,
- 25:41And so we took it from there. We got a committee that does
- 25:45a tremendous job and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Last year,
- 25:51based on geo fencing, we felt there were approximately seventeen five hundred people on
- 25:56Old Maine between Friday and Saturday, so that was a large crowd. We
- 26:00have. Our music lineup this year is awesome. Our headliner for Friday night
- 26:07is Fletcher's Grove. They've got a big following. The warm up band for
- 26:12them is Quiet And on Saturday, music starts at two goes till ten.
- 26:17We got Adam Parker and Bourbon Cowboys. At five, Corey Hager, a
- 26:22young up and coming star out in Nashville. And then the headliner for Saturday
- 26:27night is Bucky Covington. He was here last year, he's coming back and
- 26:33it's just gonna be a great time now if people aren't in, and again
- 26:37we want to make sure we understand these are two different events, but they
- 26:40come together as one. Yes, But if people aren't into the kayaking thing
- 26:45and they don't want to do the torticole, they can still just come and
- 26:48hang out on the streets, right. Yeah, there's no charts to get
- 26:49in. Music is free. Obviously, if you buy something from the vendors,
- 26:55you got to pay for that. But you know, we run the
- 27:00and things like that from sponsorships. And if it wasn't for our sponsors,
- 27:04you know, we couldn't do what we do with theatface, but Dave Allen
- 27:08showing five any line brighte to you apart by husbands Pizza this month at your
- 27:11favorite Hustans get a large eighteen inch pepperoni pizza and a whole tenants sub only
- 27:15twenty three ninety nine Texas. Are there going to be porta John's tour to
- 27:21Coal? Thousands of people floating down the river with nowhere to go? Sounds
- 27:25a bit unsanitary. Well again, I don't run the tour to Coal.
- 27:30That's col River Group. I don't think they have porta John's along the route,
- 27:37but I do know there's some at Lower Falls. So hold it to
- 27:40you, just hold it to you get there. Yeah, yeah, Lower
- 27:41Falls is about halfway down, so you could get out, pull over,
- 27:47use Portajohn's there and get back in and float the rests away and there'll be
- 27:53maybe a few porta Johns down at the end where they get out at in
- 27:57Saint Aubert. Now, if people want to set up for yackfast like vendors
- 28:02and do you have things like that going on there? I mean yes,
- 28:04yeah, if food vendors do. You used to have room to get people
- 28:07honors at schedule pretty much it's not totally full, but it's pretty full.
- 28:12The way people need to do they just go to yakfestwv dot com and there's
- 28:18a place to apply as a vendor. And we actually at our last meeting,
- 28:25because of price is going up so high, we lowered the prices for
- 28:29food vendors and so because the burden on them to make money and make a
- 28:36profit was tougher with the price of food and then thing going on. And
- 28:41I think sometimes people don't realize that when it comes to food trucks and vendors
- 28:45and things of that nature. I mean they people will sometimes complain about the
- 28:48prices, but I mean the food costs them more money too with inflation,
- 28:52and that's that's exactly why they have to charge more. So if people come
- 28:56out for the vendors, I know, we got food vendors. What other
- 28:59kind of vendor? Yeah, we got arts and craft vendors. We have
- 29:02outdoor vendors. There'll be beer vendors. To drink beer, you have to
- 29:07go up, show your id, pay five dollars. It gets you a
- 29:10colored wristband and the cup. Then you go buy you beer at whichever beer
- 29:15vendor you want. I think there's gonna be three or four of them,
- 29:18and one of them this year we got a new when it's Nano Breweries out
- 29:22of Charleston. They're going to participate. So you know, it's just a
- 29:27lot to do. And like I said, bring you chair, your bag,
- 29:30chair, whatever. We got the County Stage at the end of Old
- 29:34Main where it intersects with B Street and set up and you know on Saturday,
- 29:41guys, if you're gonna participate in tore the coal paddle all day,
- 29:45then come on down on Main Street and dance online. It's it's a big
- 29:48time party. It is. And I know our sister Station ninety eight seven
- 29:52a Mountain Wild, a wonderful classic rock. We're going to be a big
- 29:55part of it. My man Steve Annimal is going to be there, so
- 29:56you know it's a party if animals there a Steve Steves's on the Yakfest committee.
- 30:03Yeah, he's been a big part of it. And uh yeah,
- 30:07if Steve's there, you know there's a part always always. We had a
- 30:11text here somebody said, do you have a date for the WVU Main Street
- 30:14activities August twenty fourth. August twenty fourth, Yeah, start at three,
- 30:18run till eight. They're bringing in I know Owen Schmid again, amongst other
- 30:23ex the runaway beer truck. Yes, and uh there's going to be I
- 30:27guess some of the band there, the cheerleaders, a dance team and uh,
- 30:33this will be the third year Ford and uh it from first year to
- 30:37second year it grew tremendously and we expect that same growth this year. And
- 30:41good, all right, so let's kind of rack him up and shoot him
- 30:44again on the on the on the time frame for everything for the torticle and
- 30:48also for Yakfest, all right. Yakfest on Friday starts at four. Music
- 30:52will play from four to ten, always a little bit of song Old Man
- 30:56Yeah on ol Main. Always a little break in between us we switch groups,
- 31:00but it's pretty much consistent. Saturday, it starts at two, goes
- 31:04till ten. The tour to Coal starts about eight o'clock out Meadowood Park.
- 31:11A lot of people drop their kayaks off on Friday evening. We provide shuttles
- 31:17from the Loop area and from Center Hardware Area down in Saint Albans out to
- 31:25Meadowood Park for people that need a ride out there, and then when they
- 31:30get back in town, they just load their Kayak up in their vehicle.
- 31:33All right. In social media, you've got websites, you got Facebook,
- 31:37you and all that. Some people shouldn't be too hard to find the information.
- 31:40No, Like I said, the official website JACKFESWV dot com. But
- 31:45we also have a Facebook page, Yak Yakfest Facebook page. And tor to
- 31:51Cole I know they have a website also the tort Coal and the Coal River
- 31:57Group, but they also have a Facebook. All right, Mayor James,
- 32:00It's always a pleasure to have you on the show. We'll be talking about
- 32:04Yacfest throughout the week. I appreciate you being here about the luck with everything.

- 34:23had to leave, but I asked him on his way out the door the
- 34:25text didn't come through to leave. Was on his way out the door,
- 34:28I asked him that a Texas said, is the bridge to Meadowood Park still
- 34:30under construction? And the answer to that is yes, it is, as
- 34:36I said, the text came through just as a mayor was leaving, But
- 34:37I did ask him during the commercial break, and that is that is still
- 34:42the case, still under construction. Texas is just curious. How did they
- 34:45come up with the name yakfast? Is it because that's what you do while
- 34:47going down the river? Now we explained that earlier. The name yakfast actually
- 34:52comes from that is that is the vernacular of kayakers is is yack. It's
- 34:59kind of a short for kayaking, That's what it is. Uh. Coming
- 35:02up on tomorrow's show, journalist Amelionizeley is going to be here. Now.
- 35:07She's an investigative reporter and she's one one of the true leaders in trying to
- 35:14get to the bottom of some pretty troubling stories involving kids in the region.
- 35:20You know them all now, from the Kennedy Miller story out of Boone County
- 35:22to the horrible story from Cissonville. Uh, she's she's done some really fantastic
- 35:29work on these stories, and UH just trying to make sure that someone or
- 35:37someone's are held accountable, uh for the complete, the complete breakdown of the
- 35:43system, Uh, involving just about every level. And there's a lot of
- 35:47finger pointing to go around and and you know, you the the Governor's office
- 35:52last Thursday, I think, uh, I think it was Thursday. It
- 35:54was one of the days I was away, had a press conference and they
- 35:57had some of the uh the governor what isn't there but Chief of Staff Brian
- 36:00Abraham was and some others to talk about it, and there's you know,
- 36:05it's an unfortunate situation. There are just a lot of fingers being pointed.
- 36:09Uh uh. And the bottom line is is that there's probably enough blame to
- 36:15go around. And but Amelia has been one of those people. And there
- 36:16are several others our own, Brad Michaelhanny's one, Steven Allen Adams, Leslie
- 36:21Rubin from over w C, it's just Fox eleven, Curtis Johnson from w
- 36:24I mean, the journalistic community here in Charleston has pretty much all come together
- 36:30on this story. And I like one of the comments that was made I
- 36:32think by Leslie Rubin when she was on with Hoppy on talk line is in
- 36:37the world of journalism, of which I am not, I'm a talking head.
- 36:40I'm not a journalist, but there's a lot of rivalry when it comes
- 36:46to these stories. There's a lot of people trying to get the front and
- 36:49be the first to get the story, and and that continues on other stories,
- 36:52but this story, pretty much everybody is kind of working together on this
- 36:58and it just goes to show you the seriousness of the situation. And we
- 37:05just continue to hear about these things. Again, they're brought into like big
- 37:08time when you have the story like out of Boone County or out of Sissonville.
- 37:12But there's a whole lot of stories like that, maybe not as horrific,
- 37:15but there are a whole lot of stories like that that go on every
- 37:17day. And so again, Emilia has been one of these people that has
- 37:21really been a part of the story. So I've asked her to come on
- 37:22the show tomorrow, and she'll be on the show tomorrow. But Dave Allen

- 38:31listen, you know, As I said earlier in when we were talking to
- 38:37Merrily, it's it's a pretty big deal for Charleston. I mean a really
- 38:40really big deal. It was a big deal last year, and it's even
- 38:45bigger deal this year. So if you get a chance to get head over

- 38:53not, just follow along because you know we're going to have stories on it.
- 38:57All the other media outlets in Charleston will have stories on it as well.
- 39:01It's just a pretty pretty big deal to have our good friend Chef Paul

- 39:46who does a great job, was there, and I don't know what
- 39:51the governor's schedule was. Again, I myself was out of town when this
- 39:53was going on. Not that I cover press conferences regularly anyway, But yeah,
- 39:59I thought the governor was very it was well, let me just say,
- 40:06I thought he would be there. I really did. I don't know
- 40:09how much more he could have added to the situation. And again Abraham does
- 40:13a great job. But I thought it myself, just me speaking, I
- 40:16thought it was a bad look that Governor Justice wasn't there. Phone with the

- 41:38to the different events going on every weekend in the Canal Valley, not just
- 41:44Charleston, but in other areas like Yackfast and Saint Albans and all these other
- 41:49there's always something going on. There's always two or three things going on.
- 41:52As a matter of fact, you got to sit down and you got to
- 41:54think, Okay, what events can I go to? And for people that
- 41:59say there is nothing to do in our part of West Virginia in the Kanal
- 42:02Valley, I simply don't get it. I mean I simply do not.
- 42:06And a lot of the things are free. Like if you go to Yakfest
- 42:09this weekend, if you don't want to take part in the Tour de Cole
- 42:14and you just want to go and hang out and listen to music, the
- 42:16only charge you have is if you buy food, or you buy beer or
- 42:19buy soda. That's it. It's free. So so many things going on,
- 42:23a lot of folks work hard to make those things happen, So hats
- 42:29off to everybody. And of course we've got Regatta coming up here in a

- 46:24says a Texture. Okay, for those of us who travel I sixty
- 46:30four daily, there could be some light at the end of the proverbial tunnel
- 46:37in my absence. Last week, Joe Pack, who was chief engineer for
- 46:42the Department of Highways, was on the show Thanks Today. The Jeff hosted
- 46:45the show I Think and says that the main artery that has been causing the
- 46:51majority of delays due to construction since you know, I don't know, like
- 46:54nineteen twenty one or so, work there should be wrapped up by by late
- 47:00fall, which is right on schedule. Kat Skeldon has a story about a
- 47:05wv Metronews dot com last week two eastbound lanes of the Donald M. Legg
- 47:10Memorial Bridge at Nitro. Two of those lanes were open last week. Now
- 47:15until then, if we can just get people to slow down while driving through
- 47:22there, we'll be doing well. They did a couple of weeks ago,
- 47:27and it was well publicized. I mean, he had on this station all
- 47:29the other media outlets, a targeted enforcement, as they called it. And
- 47:34I don't know whether or not at help, but I will tell you they
- 47:37were definitely busting some people in those areas. I was driving through there one
- 47:43day and it looked like a scene from Smoking the Bandit with all of the
- 47:46blue lights. I don't I'm not really sure what day it was, but
- 47:51it was around noontime a couple of weeks ago, and literally there were probably
- 47:57ten police cars on both sides, east and westbound, pulling people over for
- 48:02speeding through the construction zone. Remember, folks, the speed limit is fifty
- 48:08five through there, So if you're listening to me right now and you're driving
- 48:13through that congested area, it's fifty five miles an hour, not sixty,
- 48:19not sixty five by five, So just slow down now. That is just
- 48:25one part, though, of the project. According to mister packing again.
- 48:29It's all part of Cat's storywv metronews dot com. The bridge work that I'm
- 48:34referring to now should be done by late fall. Now the Nitro exit ramp
- 48:38east of Cross Lanes and the overall widening project. This is the overall project
- 48:45from Nitro to Tays Valley. That part won't be finished till sometime in twenty
- 48:51twenty five. They say it's frustrating. I know. I travel at least
- 48:55five days a week, if not sometimes six or seven, but a minimum
- 49:00of five days a week between Tays Valley and Charleston. I know it's frustrating,
- 49:05but in the end, uh it is. It's going to be worth
- 49:07it, and always look at it like this. We're a lot further along
- 49:13now than what we were to keep that keep that in mind. I don't
- 49:19know if you've been following Hoppies conversations about the voting issues in Mingo County during
- 49:24the primary. Apparently, and these are allegations Democrats were allowed to vote Republican
- 49:32ballots, and there are allegations that some poll workers allowed that. Now,
- 49:38let's keep in mind though these are just these are just allegations. Investigations are
- 49:45being launched into it. And as badly as I hate to say it,
- 49:50and a lot of people's eyes, this is just Mingo County being Mingo County.
- 49:54Now, that's an area that I that's that's my part of the world,
- 49:59so to speak. That this is an area that has had quite an
- 50:01extensive history of voting shall we say, irregularities. I mean a lot of
- 50:08the stories are part of West Virginia political lore. Now, people selling the
- 50:14office of sheriff, remember that actually happened back in the eighties. Lots of
- 50:19folks going to jail. And when you hear stories like this, it's just
- 50:22another black eye on the area. You know, my native land in Logan
- 50:29County. It's actually kind of boring now when it comes to voter or candidate
- 50:32fraud, and actually has been for the last few decades, which is not
- 50:37a bad thing. But in Mingo County the investigations are being launched. Will
- 50:43be keeping an eye on it and totally unrelated. We'll close with this Jeff
- 50:45Jenkins as the story post to wv metro news dot com. Secretary of State
- 50:50Mac Warner is joining other Secretaries of States from a few other states, Arkansas,
- 50:54Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, Tennessee, and
- 50:58Wyoming in opposition to a measure that they say could federalize state elections. Now,
- 51:07this is coming in the form of an executive order from President Biden.
- 51:10Secretary Warner says the executive order would allow federal agencies to use federal dollars for
- 51:20get out the vote efforts. Now. The order was signed by the President
- 51:24in March of twenty twenty one, and mc wardner's calling it unconstitutional, citing
- 51:30the Elections Clause of the Constitution, which he says specifically declares that the manner
- 51:34of running elections should be left up to the states. And you can read
- 51:39all about it at wv Metronews dot com. And I worked trying to maybe
- 51:45sometime later this week try to get Secretary Warner on the show. Texas Dave
