Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to another episode of Founder Unfiltered.
- 0:03This is what founders think but never say.
- 0:06It's the show to really go deep into the founder experience and
- 0:11how we can make this more sustainable for everyone.
- 0:15My name is Bradley Jacobs, I'm your host, the founder and CEO
- 0:19of my lands. Today I'm going to bring you
- 0:22actual questions, thoughts, curiosities, let's say that
- 0:27customers have had or potential customers have had because I
- 0:31know if they're expressing these doubts and concerns that you
- 0:35have them too. And before I get into it, the
- 0:39product that we have built has taken a whole new level.
- 0:43Customers are really raving about how it's actually learning
- 0:46to write like you. We bring in trending news
- 0:49articles. We now have an image generator.
- 0:52Scheduling and posting the LinkedIn is super, super easy.
- 0:54Like I spend under 5 minutes per post right now.
- 0:56So it's, it's been really amazing and we give you a free
- 1:00positioning now. So come check it out, go to the
- 1:03website mylands.co and get your free positioning.
- 1:06OK, with that said, I'm going to just read to you an e-mail I
- 1:10got. It's from a potential customer
- 1:13and he's kind of gone back and forth and whether he wants to
- 1:15really use LinkedIn to grow his business or not.
- 1:18And I'm not really in the business of convincing somebody
- 1:20to use LinkedIn. Like if you don't see the value
- 1:23of LinkedIn, that's not going to be my my job.
- 1:25It's more about if you want to use it and you don't know how to
- 1:29use it most effectively to bring in clients, bring in customers,
- 1:32get your name out there, then I'm your guy.
- 1:35So anyway, he says. I think that it's the fact that
- 1:39it feels disingenuous to me. Like I feel like both I know and
- 1:44the people reading the post know that this is just about getting
- 1:48my name out there and making sales.
- 1:50And so it feels hollow. And then he goes, does it make
- 1:53any sense? Have you forced your way through
- 1:55that feeling or do you see it differently?
- 1:57And I think this is a fascinating mindset, frankly,
- 2:00like having been in this world for so long, it's not right or
- 2:04wrong. I think it's totally normal to
- 2:07feel this way of like, I'm only showing up on LinkedIn basically
- 2:11so that so that I can get customers.
- 2:14And so I know that and they know that.
- 2:16So this doesn't work. The mindset that he's having is
- 2:20totally normal and not going to get him anywhere, right?
- 2:24That's almost like saying like, I'm not going to write a blog
- 2:28that adds value, that showcases a interesting person, a case
- 2:32study or talks about a topic. Or frankly, let's just say this
- 2:35podcast. I'm not going to record this
- 2:37podcast because I know that you guys know one of the main
- 2:41reasons I do this is to get awareness and build trust and,
- 2:46and add value so that you think I'm legitimate and then you come
- 2:49by my product, right? Does that make me disingenuous
- 2:54for sharing this podcast with you?
- 2:57And the way that I think about this in total transparency is I
- 3:01think about how much value can I add to you?
- 3:04Genuine value, right? How can I teach you things,
- 3:08inspire you, motivate you, connect you to good people, you
- 3:13know, great people that I have on the podcast guests.
- 3:15And how can I just deliver value, deliver value, deliver
- 3:18value because the end of the day, my product is also
- 3:23valuable, right? It is way more valuable than
- 3:25what I charge for it. So I am giving you value.
- 3:29Yes, I'm building up trust with you and I'm growing the
- 3:32awareness so that when you come check us out that you've heard
- 3:37about it from podcast or LinkedIn or wherever.
- 3:41And there's also some trust built up.
- 3:42You know, this isn't some like a random software product they
- 3:45threw together in five seconds. And then if you do buy the
- 3:49product, you're getting even more value.
- 3:51So like everybody wins, I win, you win, everybody wins.
- 3:55So he's coming from the standpoint of like, I am not
- 4:00delivering value in my content or my service.
- 4:03I'm actually taking. And because I'm taking and I
- 4:07feel like I'm taking and then you feel like I'm taking.
- 4:09It all feels gross, right? What he says, it feels
- 4:13disingenuous to him. I'm going to share some more
- 4:17quotes I heard. I was on a call actually
- 4:19yesterday. And she is really concerned that
- 4:23showing up on LinkedIn feels desperate.
- 4:26She used that word a bunch, especially about posting
- 4:29multiple times per week. She said, everyone will know I
- 4:33left my job. I can't be too specific because
- 4:35I might need these people later. When she talked about like, how
- 4:38we're going to work on her niche, she's like, I need to be
- 4:40really, really careful about what I say.
- 4:42What if, you know, the tool misfires and then it posts
- 4:45something random? There's all of these fears
- 4:49running the show of if I haven't been posting on LinkedIn and
- 4:53then I start posting on LinkedIn, what is everyone going
- 4:57to think that to me is the course?
- 4:59Like what are other people going to think about me, especially
- 5:03the people that my LinkedIn community might be made-up of
- 5:07past Co workers, past managers, maybe investors, like people
- 5:10that I really respect and look up to.
- 5:12And I don't want them to think I'm a desperate fill in the
- 5:15blank, right? So we're all, we're trying to
- 5:18manage other people's perceptions of us and frankly,
- 5:23we're suffering in the process because here's what's true.
- 5:29I post on LinkedIn every single day.
- 5:32Sometimes I post twice a day. And here's the reason why I
- 5:37don't think twice about doing that is because I know that my
- 5:41followers connections, whatever you want to call them, they
- 5:44aren't seeing. Like, it's not like when I make
- 5:47a post 25,000 people all see it at one time.
- 5:51And then if I post again an hour later, they all see it again.
- 5:54That's not how it works. And if you think about your own
- 5:57feed that you get right when you're scrolling, it's not like
- 6:01you're seeing, oh, Bradley made another post, right?
- 6:04You might see it a few hours later.
- 6:06You might see it a few days later.
- 6:07You might see it a few weeks later and you might never see
- 6:10it. I would venture to guess you
- 6:12listening to this, you probably see one in four or one in five
- 6:16posts that I make. The algorithm doesn't work where
- 6:19it's just going to constantly show you my stuff.
- 6:21Like that would be a horrible user experience, right?
- 6:24I could post every hour and it's not going to do that.
- 6:27So you got to think about what is it really like from your
- 6:31user's point of view? It's not what you experience.
- 6:37So that's a big, big part that we get to really untangle.
- 6:40She's like, I don't know, I kind of only want to post once a
- 6:42week. I'm like, look, you can post
- 6:43once a week. She's like, I'm going to make it
- 6:45a really high quality post and I'm like, that's great, but not
- 6:49everyone's going to see that post.
- 6:51And if you're willing to show up three times per week, right,
- 6:55then you are one, increasing the odds that your post resonate
- 6:58because we don't know exactly what's going to resonate.
- 7:00We have a good idea, but we don't know exactly.
- 7:03And two more people are just generally going to see your
- 7:05content over time because that one piece per week is just not
- 7:09going to get that widely distributed unless it like
- 7:12happens to just like take off, which is relatively rare and
- 7:15frankly like not what we are searching for, fishing for,
- 7:18optimizing for. It's like we are optimizing for
- 7:21consistency overtime with yes, high quality, but it does not
- 7:24need to be perfect. And we're completely taking that
- 7:28off the table. The mindset here, all these
- 7:32objections, all the fears, all of the like.
- 7:35What if it looks desperate? This is what I really want to
- 7:38spend the rest of the time talking about because how we
- 7:42think other people are going to perceive us.
- 7:45We are never going to win that game.
- 7:48Never. We can't control other people's
- 7:51perceptions. Like I had a post once and I
- 7:54told her this on the call. It was like I had a post that
- 7:57literally left myself a note in the middle of the post and I
- 8:00said like, finish this edit later or finish this draft
- 8:03later. And I accidentally posted it to
- 8:07LinkedIn And I have like 25,000 followers, right?
- 8:09And someone or two people wrote like, this is what happens when
- 8:13you use AI. Like they tried to like, you
- 8:15know, catch me. And I was like, hey guys, well,
- 8:17you know, thanks for the call out.
- 8:19Appreciate, appreciate holding me accountable here.
- 8:21And actually, this wasn't AI. This was me.
- 8:23This was my own honest mistake. Yes, I am human.
- 8:28I made a mistake. I posted something before I was
- 8:31ready. You guys got me right?
- 8:34It's like, and frankly, I don't even think anybody like, how do
- 8:37you even respond to what I said? I don't think anybody even
- 8:40responded to it. And I ended up finishing the
- 8:43post, right? And then that was it.
- 8:46It was over. Did I lose tons of credibility?
- 8:49Do people think I'm like some major fuck up because I made a
- 8:52mistake on LinkedIn? Like no, right, and but we make
- 8:56the we like over dramaticize how we're going to look.
- 9:00And so, you know, I'd love to really hit on the IT feels
- 9:03desperate that everyone will know I left my job and are just
- 9:06looking for clients. And first of all, if everyone
- 9:09knows you left your job, I think that's kind of a good thing,
- 9:12right? She's specifically looking to go
- 9:15into consulting. And so if everyone knows that
- 9:17she left her job, then they could potentially hire her.
- 9:22So I think one, that's a good thing.
- 9:24I think she's fearful of being seen in transition or having it
- 9:28look like she got laid off or something like that, which she
- 9:30didn't, but it doesn't matter, right?
- 9:33She's she's trying to keep up appearances, but I think leaving
- 9:35your job is a good thing if you're trying to get hired as a
- 9:39consultant or trying to find customers for your company,
- 9:42because now people know what you're up to and that's a good
- 9:44thing because then they can come hire you or work with you on
- 9:47down the line. As far as the IT feels
- 9:50desperate, I think that's really interesting.
- 9:52Again, from the standpoint of what is desperate about sharing
- 9:57your expertise on LinkedIn, I actually think you could reframe
- 10:01that to say sharing your expertise on LinkedIn is one of
- 10:04the most generous things you could do.
- 10:07You are opening people's eyes up to what you know in a broad
- 10:12sense. Meaning like I make one post and
- 10:14it could hit 100 or 1000 or 10,000 people.
- 10:18I'm sharing my expertise that they're not going to learn
- 10:22otherwise. That is one of the most
- 10:25generous, powerful, loving, kind, caring things I could do.
- 10:30I know personally a ton of shit about go to market strategies
- 10:35from Uber, marketplace launches, consulting businesses, pricing.
- 10:39Imagine if I just kept all of that information to myself and
- 10:42I'm like, I'm not going to share.
- 10:44I'm not going to share because I'm scared of how you're going
- 10:47to perceive me. I'm scared about how you're
- 10:49going to think about me. I'm scared about whatever story
- 10:51you're going to make up about who I am.
- 10:54And honestly, my guess is 1 in 100 people of my LinkedIn or
- 10:59this podcast or whatever probably think I'm full of shit,
- 11:03right? One in 100 judge the shit out of
- 11:05me or think I'm disingenuous or whatever, right?
- 11:10That's just going to happen. And I would venture to guess
- 11:14that the 99 people out of 100 that don't think that are at a
- 11:20minimum, like feel nothing about my podcast or LinkedIn.
- 11:24And in the best case scenario, love what I do, get value, share
- 11:28it with friends, come back to me and say thank you.
- 11:32I learned a lot from like I had a guy, he just made a LinkedIn
- 11:35post this morning and he wrote, based on this conversation with
- 11:39Bradley, I started adding new connections and sharing content
- 11:42on LinkedIn and my network has completely transformed.
- 11:45So even from one person, I'm like, OK, this is worth it.
- 11:49This is worth it because part of my purpose here on this planet
- 11:53is to support others in their dreams.
- 11:55And so even producing the free content on this podcast and
- 12:00LinkedIn like I am, I feel amazing about that.
- 12:04So the one person who judges the fuck out of me can have their
- 12:07fun with that, right? It doesn't really need to affect
- 12:09me at all. It only really affects me if
- 12:11they start doing a massive marketing campaign trying to
- 12:14like slander me, which is a huge amount of effort and they should
- 12:17probably just do that for their own business instead of trying
- 12:19to take me down, right? That just makes no sense.
- 12:21So if we can let go of the fear of judgment, of the fear of what
- 12:26other people are going to say, fear of this stories and realize
- 12:30we are never going to be able to control somebody else's
- 12:36perception of us. All we can do is show up
- 12:38authentically, honestly, adding value to the world, adding value
- 12:43to everyone we can interact with, right?
- 12:46Start to like fill our own cup always, and then bring our gifts
- 12:50to the world in the most authentic way possible.
- 12:53And then if somebody wants to judge us, let them judge us just
- 12:55like it's OK, right? What happens when you get
- 12:58judged? The answer is, if you don't let
- 13:00it affect you, the answer is nothing, right?
- 13:04OK, That person who judges me, they're not going to be a
- 13:06customer. Cool, right?
- 13:08But the 99 people that I'm either adding value to or feel
- 13:11indifferent about me, I have a potential to work with them.
- 13:14I have a potential to get my product in their hands and help
- 13:17them. Because when I get my product in
- 13:20their hands and then they grow their businesses through sharing
- 13:24authentically on LinkedIn, then everybody wins.
- 13:27And I feel amazing inside. So I'm willing to risk it.
- 13:30I'm willing to risk that person that tells me I'm full of shit.
- 13:33Let's say they get loud and they're like, probably you're
- 13:35full of shit. I'm willing to face that in
- 13:38order to add value to dozens, hundreds, thousands of people.
- 13:43And frankly, if you're going to be a business owner, that is
- 13:48what you are agreeing to. You are agreeing to be somewhat
- 13:52polarizing. You are agreeing that people
- 13:54aren't going to like you, that you're going to get rejected,
- 13:56that you're going to get judged because in order to grow
- 13:59awareness of your service product, whatever it is, you're
- 14:02putting yourself out there and that's just what's going to
- 14:05happen. So I hope this was a really
- 14:08helpful reframing episode, sharing genuinely of what I
- 14:13experienced sharing what my customers are saying and how you
- 14:18can think about it instead. That's hopefully really, really
- 14:20empowering for you. With that, I'm going to sign
- 14:22off. I hope you guys got value out of
- 14:24this episode means a ton. If you just take one second to
