- 1:11Now it's Tom for this week's episode of Patnovak for Hire. Fleet Lady,
- 1:15Ladies and Gentlemen, The American Broadcasting Company brings to its entire network one of
- 1:21radio's most unusual programs, Pat Novak for Hire. Sure, I'm Patnovak for
- 1:53Hire. That's what the sign out in front of my office says. Hat
- 2:14Novak for Hire. You got to put it in block letters because down on
- 2:17the waterfront in San Francisco there's a price tag on everything. You got to
- 2:22do that or marry a rich widow. I don't like to work that hard.
- 2:27So I rent boats and do anything else that's cash and carry. Oh,
- 2:31it's all right if you don't mind trouble, because that's one thing you
- 2:35can't duck. It's like trying to dance the minuet and skis and the best
- 2:39trouble always looks good from the outside. You're all smiles and feel like a
- 2:45kid opening a hand grenade under the Christmas tree. I found that out Tuesday
- 2:50night. It was around seven o'clock. I was getting ready to close the
- 2:53office when this little guy showed up. It was about the size of a
- 2:55golf bag with arms, and if you had a cigar box he could see
- 2:59a were a pool table. He walked up the desk and started talking in
- 3:02a voice that made you think he was trying to put Lily Pond's out of
- 3:05work. Hello, you know, Beck, you're doing all right so far.
- 3:08What's on your mind? I'm Jackie Greg. You heard of me?
- 3:10Huh, you're the shy type. I know. I'm Jackie Greg, the
- 3:14Jackie. You heard of me? All right? Now? I heard her.
- 3:15You put the show on the road. I'm looking for a horse.
- 3:19You want to find me a horse? Yeah? I breed him in the
- 3:20back room what color do you want? Yes, so tough. I gotta
- 3:22take that from him. Calm down before you wind up in a boy's choir.
- 3:24If you got anything to sell, put it on the line or beat
- 3:27it. I'm riding the horse tomorrow called Fleet Lady. She's disappeared. She's
- 3:30not here. I'm supposed to ride the sixth race with her tomorrow, the
- 3:34Bananza Handicap, and she's gone. All right, she's gone. Maybe your
- 3:37horse likes to go out at night. I haven't seen her get to the
- 3:38point. I'll give you two hundred bucks to find that horse. Somebody took
- 3:43her in a van. I tailed it down here the waterfront, but you
- 3:46lost him up with a ferry building. That's right. Something funny's going on.
- 3:50My mom disappeared, and you gotta find her. This is a big
- 3:53waterfront. And where's the two hundred bucks? You'll get that all right down
- 3:55by peer nineteen the van turned in. I think you can find Fleet l
- 4:00I don't know who owns woman named Sybil Thornton. She's mixed up. I
- 4:03think, yeah, why steal your own horse? I am run a ringer.
- 4:08Maybe that's a tough trick. This woman's got some good ones. You
- 4:12want the two hundred bucks? Yeah, all of the odds. What's the
- 4:15difference. You're gonna open a book. You better take the two hundred bucks
- 4:17now. Yeah, the door will keep you sound frightened, junior, and
- 4:19you sound nosey. Here's a two hundred. I want you to find the
- 4:24horse. You let me know at the Kingston Hotel. Huh sure. And
- 4:27if you don't find anything around the water front, maybe I better try the
- 4:30track ask around there. Yeah, by the way, how do you fit
- 4:33in? How come you got tw hundred dollars interest in that horse? Maybe
- 4:35I love horses? What do you care? Maybe I love horses. I
- 4:39don't look like you've gotta love something. Oh yeah, it was a sweet
- 4:51proposition, a jockey in search of a horse. There's something phony about the
- 4:57whole thing. I had the two hundred bucks, but I didn't feel good.
- 5:00It was like a guy stealing a murder gun to help out in a
- 5:02scrap metal drive. Well, after the little guy left, I closed the
- 5:06office and started to hit the docks. But it didn't work out. You
- 5:11know, you can buy good whiskey these days, So you feel funny walking
- 5:14up to some guy in the here and asking have you seen a racehorse around
- 5:15here? Mister by nine? I was sure the horse wasn't around, so
- 5:20I borrowed a car and drove out to the track. I found out where
- 5:23Sybil Thornton's horses were quartered and headed down that way. It was pretty dark,
- 5:28so when I bumped into her, all I got was a vague outline.
- 5:31She had a good looking, vague outline. Oh, I'm very sorry.
- 5:35Yeah, I'm full of regrets too. Shall we try it again?
- 5:39You a little mixed up in your animals? They keep horses here. You
- 5:42don't seem to mind. No, you lean nicely, but you'd probably feel
- 5:45safer with a platform. We try this again when I've had three good meals.
- 5:49That's a horse. Yes, I know that guy owner. I see
- 5:55that. It'd make you, Sybil Thornton? Yes, what would it make
- 5:57you? A guy named Patnovak? Looking for your horse? I was hired
- 6:00in the waterfront to find it. Right. They grow big on the waterfront
- 6:02too, must get a lot of sun by the way, fleet lady,
- 6:05miss he jockey, says she is. That's why I'm snooping around. Didn't
- 6:09know he had any friends. He's got a check book, how about fleet
- 6:12lady. Is she talking in bed? Let's take a look. Huh find
- 6:15it very dull? Mister. Yeah, that's what they said to Anthony.
- 6:16Let's see the horse suit yourself. That's why, okay, I'm doing that's
- 6:21not the bigness of my heart. I think you're wasting my generalety. I
- 6:27don't use it all this trip. It's from the stable. Come on,
- 6:33don't about his Fleet lady's tall here. There's a flashlight on the wall.
- 6:40All right, oh poor thing. So horses die broke too? Who is
- 6:49it, fleet lady? Yeah, so you're satisfied. No, I'm going
- 6:53to ring up headquarters. You crazy, and I'm gonna call Jackie greg and
- 6:56tell him his hunch paid off. I wouldn't do that, mister Nosa,
- 6:59stop kidding me. So we hot. She didn't get killed in the fight
- 7:00when another horse crag figured somebody was telling the machine. That's why fleet ladies
- 7:02dead. That's why I'm gonna call headquarters. But remember what happened to fleet
- 7:05lady? Are you getting tough angels? No, it wouldn't good with a
- 7:10saddle, mister. Well, I watched her as she turned and walked out
- 7:29of there. It's kind of a walk that makes you flip the calendar and
- 7:31find out how far away spring is. I looked around a while, but
- 7:36it didn't do any good. The place was full of doors, so whoever
- 7:40killed Fleet Lady got out easy, like a rumor at a church picnic.
- 7:44I closed the door and went down the line to call the headquarters. So
- 7:46I stood in there talking. I saw Sybil Thornton drive away. It was
- 7:49a long convertible with red assbesta seat covers. After I called the headquarters,
- 7:55I went back and waited near the stable. About a half hour later a
- 7:58police car pulled up, and when I so got out, I began to
- 8:01get unhappy, like a three legged man in a ballet school. It was
- 8:03Helman from homicide and he had a squad with him. All right, all
- 8:09right, I'll talk to him. Hello, Novak, where's your trainer?
- 8:13Your boys get paid to the lab at your helme? And I don't.
- 8:16Yeah, where's the horse? What are you doing on the case? I
- 8:18came for the ride? Your mind, Novak? No, I just wondered
- 8:20if they wised up downtown, because you could find a dead horse helmet.
- 8:24If they staked it out in the middle of Market Street, you'd find it
- 8:26before long. I'll try this time, whereas it's all eighteen over there.
- 8:30Keep an eye on the boys. Only back in a minute in here,
- 8:35Novak, Yeah, the one with a teeth like yours. You better shut
- 8:37up. No back, don't get jumpy. You haven't seen the horse.
- 8:41Just shut up. Huh. It wasn't gonna be much of a conversation anyway.
- 8:43What color horse was that, Novack? What do you mean take a
- 8:46look at it? Yeah, yeah, I did. I just took a
- 8:52look. It's a smart horse, Novak. That's right. A dead horse
- 8:58in there is wearing a double breasted soup. Helman got the message straight.
- 9:09I walked in and took a look. Jackie Greg was lying there on the
- 9:13floor as dead as last year's love. The sickness didn't show until we rolled
- 9:16him over on his stomach. Somebody had gone duck hunting in the middle of
- 9:20his back. I'm begin to feel a little sick myself, and I was
- 9:24ready to send up for the same gun when Helman started to talk. You
- 9:26forgot to mention the guy when your phone headquarters. He wasn't there. I
- 9:28was in here before and the guy wasn't around. What was he doing?
- 9:31Another horse? I don't know, Helman. Maybe he crawled out of a
- 9:33crack. I don't know. There were two shots. I came in and
- 9:35found the horse. Yeah, checked the horse trying to tell me. The
- 9:37horse shot back. Who is he? A guy by the name of Jackie
- 9:39Gregg. He gave me two hundred bucks to find a missing horse. Yeah,
- 9:43a horse called Fleet Lady running in tomorrow's handicap. This is the end
- 9:46of the line. How do you know it's the same one. I don't
- 9:46Maybe you gotta be a horse to tell. Why don't you ask one of
- 9:48your boys. Yeah, the boy's real tough. I'll call him off,
- 9:54Helman. He's nasty. We all hate him. No back, it's all
- 9:58right. I'll put it on on your bill. Helman. That's good.
- 10:01You can write it up at headquarters. Helman, you ought to run an
- 10:03idiot. The heavy thinking's too much for you. I can piece this together,
- 10:05but come out here and find a dead man with you kicking up dust
- 10:09forty feet away. Look, Helman, I didn't kill the guy and call
- 10:11up headquarters. I know they're bad and homicide, but I'm not that big
- 10:13hearted. We got a fair hook for you. No fact, that's where
- 10:16you stay until somebody get you off. When you can start out with Sybil
- 10:18Thornton, another horse, She's got the speed for it. Look her up.
- 10:20She owns fleet lady again. She was dashing around in the dark here
- 10:22playing easy to get. I'll look her up. You better leave the boys
- 10:26behind. After all, she's only a woman. When you see her,
- 10:28ask her about that van down on the waterfront and what she was doing before
- 10:33I made that phone call. I'll tag all the bases. Don't worry,
- 10:35Junior, and if things fit together, you'll both be in the jug.
- 10:37I'll see you later. I got work to do. Yeah, it's getting
- 10:39late. You better put the boys back in the cave. I began to
- 10:52worry after Helman left. There was no murdered gun, and he didn't have
- 10:56too much to go on, But there was no one else wanted my job.
- 11:00I know the girl was going to have an alibi, and I was
- 11:01the last guy that Jackie Gregg had seen. I had about as much chance
- 11:05as a fat girl at a Princeton prim Helman didn't like me, and he
- 11:09was a smart cop with a disposition like a ton of rhubarb. Well,
- 11:13I had to start right from scratch. I felt like Adam the first morning
- 11:15he woke up, so I looked up a guy named jack o' madigan,
- 11:18an next doctor and a boozer who will give you a lift if you show
- 11:20him where the stirrups are her. He's a good guy, but he thinks
- 11:24all food makes a gurgle. I hit all the bars and finally found him
- 11:28up at Maggie Nielsen's apartment. She's a good looking voice that lives up on
- 11:31the hill, and Jacko was working his way into her liquor supply. Hello,
- 11:33Patsy, are just in time to join me for my first drink of
- 11:37the evening, or one of my first at least. Yeah, I see
- 11:41Maggie's not here, but I found a whiskey. It was in plain sight,
- 11:45locked in the closet under some newspapers. All right, Jacko, when
- 11:48are you going to sober up? I plan to do it briefly on April
- 11:50first, when the rest of the world plays the fool. Also, look,
- 11:54I'm in trouble, Jacko. You gotta help me good. I have
- 11:56a special bottle I used to forget your trouble. Look, stop caressing that
- 12:01jugg and listen to me. I'm in a jam. Patsy, there is
- 12:03nothing in nature so sad as a half empty bottle. It's like a broken
- 12:07vow or an unfulfilled promise in the skies, a falling star or a jacko
- 12:13a falling star and you shrug it off, never realizing that a whole world
- 12:18has ended at that moment, a hundred million dreams maybe, and you watch
- 12:22it fall and make an asenine wish. That's all the good it does a
- 12:26star to fall. It gives some kid a chance to wish for a bicycle.
- 12:31You of finished now, Jocko. Yes, what kind of trouble anything
- 12:35I could aggravate. I'm mixed up out of the track. A guy by
- 12:37the name of Jackie greg is dead and I don't look good hellman. Yeah,
- 12:41the guy's a jockey and he hired me to find a horse named Fleet.
- 12:43Lady, did you a horse and the jockey ran a dead heat?
- 12:46But there's something funny about the whole deal. Did you talk to the jockey?
- 12:50No? Not enough, Patsy. You've got to break yourself of the
- 12:54habit of waiting until people are dead before you think of a question, Jocko.
- 12:58I want you to hit all the horse rooms find out what you can
- 13:00about the sixth Race tomorrow. It's the Bonanza Handicap and I hurry up?
- 13:01Will you? If it's the sixth race? Why can't we wait? Awhile
- 13:05start Now, get everything you can and call me. I'll leave a message
- 13:07to your place. Where are you going? I don't know. Maybe you
- 13:11have to see the girl, Patsy. You're going to be waving at the
- 13:13hangman's wife when they spring the trap door. I gotta see her. She
- 13:18owns fleet lady. Oh, why don't I see her? She's got a
- 13:20steak somewhere. And I got a lot of questions. What could you do
- 13:22up there? Yes, if it weren't an academic question, I'd argue the
- 13:28point and would look like a bum deal right from the start. Patsie,
- 13:31you have the instinct for recognizing trouble, but not the intelligence to duck it.
- 13:35Save your breath? Will you? Like a man walking under a scaffold
- 13:37on a building, you realize it may crash down and kill you, But
- 13:41instead of hugging the building where you can't get hurt, like every other dope,
- 13:46you scurry for the edge of the sidewalk, where you're bound to get
- 13:48hit if it fall JOCKO, will you get out of those horse powers.
- 13:50I need backs, not fables, and don't give me a hand. All
- 13:54right, give my love to fleet lady. My name's Sybil Thornton. I'll
- 13:56bet I'm not far wrong. Good night lover. After I left, Jock
- 14:09all went to the Chronicle. Morgan looked up the NBC program director, Paul
- 14:13Stangle. We pulled out the clips on Sybil Thornton. They were nice and
- 14:18fat. Because she'd been to Reno four times and hadn't broke training for years.
- 14:22She'd been traded around more than a Red Sox picture. The clipping said
- 14:26she was thirty two. There were a lot of pictures from her eyes.
- 14:30He got the idea she was around thirty five. But there were arguments the
- 14:33other way too. There weren't any stories on her for the last few months,
- 14:37just a few items from the columns. They all said the same thing.
- 14:41She was hitting the night spots with a gambler named Rudy Hawser. There
- 14:45were pictures of him too. He wouldn't look good in a cave with heavy
- 14:48curtains, I asked Paul. He said Hawser had a gambling place out on
- 14:52Geary, so I took a cab out there for ten bucks. The guy
- 14:56at the door said Sybil Thornton had left the place an hour ago. That
- 15:00made me feel good. When Hawser opened the door of his office, I
- 15:03lost the glow. Yeah, what's with you? I got a problem.
- 15:07You got the wrong door. You can't get any tougher, so I'm coming
- 15:09in. Suit yourself. Never throw anybody out until I'm sure they've lost all
- 15:15their money. What's on your mind? A horse named Fleet Ladies. He
- 15:18disappeared at seven o'clock tonight. You check them at the rug. I'll try
- 15:22the captain. She got back just in time to greet somebody's guns. If
- 15:24I say no, will you go out and lose your money like a good
- 15:28boy. Fleet Lady was owned by a gall named Sybil Forton. In the
- 15:30column say you're number five on her list, and they never lie. A
- 15:33whiskey's too good. Also, a little bird says she was in your office
- 15:35an hour ago. That's right, she said, your name's Novak. Yeah,
- 15:41next time you got a bombshell, give it a test run with Fleet
- 15:43Lady dead. Your money's gonna look real good in the six tomorrow. It
- 15:46makes you think the guy would throw a race for the same reason she goes
- 15:50out with you. Uh. When a girl takes a great Dane like you
- 15:52out in public, it generally means the guy's a few bucks ahead of her.
- 15:56You want to fight the team now, No, Beck, Just remember
- 16:00sometimes you can't be right and a gentleman too. Yeah. I hope that's
- 16:03the way you feel when they pick it for Jackie Ggg's murder. Huh.
- 16:06Oh, you do a real nice double take, mister. The jockey checked
- 16:08out with a horse. I didn't know that, Novak. Yeah, with
- 16:11no brains, you built this gambling club. I didn't know it was dead.
- 16:15If I told you that, Novak, I meant it. He's all
- 16:17right for a little punk. Sorry, he's dead, so's he. I'll
- 16:21see you later, Hauser. I got a nose around and find out where
- 16:22you were tonight. Yeah, it seems all right, Novak. So I'll
- 16:27tell you you got any dough left when you leave my tables. Better on
- 16:30a horse named Fleet Lady in the sixth race tomorrow. You always bet on
- 16:34a dead horse. You got the tip, use it a barrier, but
- 16:37don't loan it out. Oh, the case was a regular grab bag.
- 16:49When I walked out of Hawser's office. I began to tick off the things
- 16:53that didn't add up. First on the list was that van down on the
- 16:56water front. If it was Fleet Lady who got shot in the stable,
- 17:02If it was the ringer, that meant Fleet Lady would run tomorrow. I
- 17:06couldn't figure out why Hawser was so sure she came in. An idea kept
- 17:11racing around in the back of my mind like an a hand in a cookie
- 17:12factory. Jackie Greg led about that van down on the water front, of
- 17:17why not to bail me out of the poorhouse with two hundred bucks. I
- 17:22got part of the answer when I stopped with the pain telephone and called Helman.
- 17:25Yeah, Hellman, duncan' novak, I got some news. I have
- 17:27to put it on the back page. Well you got your friend Jackie Great
- 17:30had some love life. Well there's a chance for you, Helman. Who's
- 17:33the girl Sibill Prton? Yeah, we found a picture in his wallet,
- 17:36the gooey kin. I bet you' still it for long train rides. But
- 17:38time do you die? The right fit for you? Between nine and ten
- 17:41o'clock two shots from a thirty two caliber pistol. How about the horse forty
- 17:45five caliber two people. It's getting involved. Maybe maybe not if you got
- 17:48two hands, Novak. Look up a guy named Rudy Hawser. He's got
- 17:51to joint out on Gary Street. I got enough friends you look him up.
- 17:52I did. He's still talking about Fleet Lady and Tamara's race. Maybe
- 17:56he's sentimental. Look, Novak, I'll pick up my own work. I
- 18:00don't need free help from you. Jackie Creg paid two hundred bucks and look
- 18:03what he got. I'd suit yourself. But Rudy Hawser and that Galler close
- 18:07friend, Ye like two part harmony in a telephone booth. Get off the
- 18:10dime, Helman. Howser's got that galluons his pocket. She owns Fleet Lady
- 18:11and he's betting her to win. It's gotta be a slow field to lose
- 18:15to a dead horse. Wake up, Helman. You couldn't smell a wrack
- 18:18in a basement full of cheese. I did all right in your apartment.
- 18:19Huh that thirty two caliber pistol, we found it in your place, see
- 18:22you later. Well, I wasn't too worried about that. Helman is smart
- 18:36enough to know a phony plant. I began to think about that thirty two
- 18:40caliber pistol. It's a woman's weapon. Well, that doesn't prove anything,
- 18:42so it's a breadknife if she's in a bad mood. Must have been about
- 18:48midnight when I got to Sybil Thornton's place. She was wearing black lounging pajamas,
- 18:53tied tighter on a slim waist. She looked like a wasp with a
- 18:57nice sting. She had come me come in. Yeah, mister is Ronnie
- 19:07Stark? Hello Novak. He's not very friendly, Sybil. He's just parting
- 19:11because they're going to arrest him for Jackie's murder. How do you like Hellman?
- 19:15You've known him longer? Yeah, somebody left the murder gun up at
- 19:18my place, or you've been all night? Please, mister, you're embarrassing
- 19:22Ronnie. That's right. I'm blushing, and it's not the whiskey, Novak.
- 19:26I see you mustay longer, Ronnie. He's persuasive. I know that
- 19:33you won't forget, Ronnie. I won't forget. I'm betting on you,
- 19:37all right, What won't he forget? No? I hope nobody ever asks
- 19:44you that question. You don't want to talk about putting that gun in my
- 19:48apartment. Let's talk about Rudy Howsard, then your meat grinder friend. We
- 19:52just had a good talk and he open up a new road. What'd you
- 19:55tell him? Don't break a spring? He's all right? Will you do
- 19:57me a favorite petty? Like not talking to Howser anymore? That's won't do
- 20:03any good, pets, And it'll do me a lot of good. How's
- 20:06he gonna know which horse got killed? I'll bet you lied to him?
- 20:07Angel, it's my applect Patsy. You leave it alone, sure, but
- 20:12play your hand right, maybe because I'm gonna watch your cards, and if
- 20:15you've got one that says Jackie Greg, I'm gonna court you the hard way.
- 20:18Patsy, You nice beast. I really think you would sit down?
- 20:25Yeah, drink no? Do you good? Right now? Yeah? You've
- 20:32read the book, just a couple of chapters. I bet they're the right
- 20:36ones. You better watch out, baby, I may be a long shot.
- 20:40Do you care as long as I bet I don't. That's good.
- 20:44I didn't think you'd mind. Aren't you beginning to crowd the beachhead? Don't
- 20:49be a sissy, Patsy. You can't live forever, all right, Angel,
- 20:53It's time to wear the folks just wait until you know me, Patty.
- 21:00That's for me. I left the number. It's your fault. Yeah,
- 21:06hello, Patchie. What'd you find out, Jocko? Not much.
- 21:08Nobody seems to care about the sixth grade. I care about it. That's
- 21:11because you killed one of the jockies. The rest of the people have a
- 21:15more casual interest. Out of the odds run no heavy favorites been Air and
- 21:19Sleepy Time Gal figure to be the best around five to one. What about
- 21:25Fleet Lady? Down the line somewhere, I talked to one fellow. He
- 21:29says she's a dog and couldn't beat a paralytic goose over a hundred yards.
- 21:33Yeah, what else? What do you mean that's all Start digging, Jocko.
- 21:37We're not getting any place, not even at Urine. Uh. I
- 21:40counted on you to do better than that. Good night lover. On the
- 21:55way home, I bought the morning papers. There was no story on Jackie
- 21:57Greg, no detail, and most of this story was a statement by Helman
- 22:03on Helman. There was no mention a fleet Lady, and at one o'clock
- 22:07in the morning, it was nothing I could do but roll into bed.
- 22:08I woke up about nine, called Jocko. It was like sending a message
- 22:11out to the Pharaoh loans by Indian runner. He just muttered and said he'd
- 22:15meet me out at the track. Well, I had to have some more
- 22:18dope, so I called Ira Snow. He calls the races and bets on
- 22:22him the way he does it, A horse is a real beast, a
- 22:25burden. He was playing elf when I got him on the wire. Yeah,
- 22:27Ira, this is Novak. What do you know about the Bonanza handicaps
- 22:30a horse racing? You're funny? What about the field? Are the horses
- 22:33any good for Hamburgers? Maybe? Nothing else? How about Fleet Lady Eastern
- 22:37Track? Nobody knows? Would you be worth a heavy plunge if you want
- 22:41to be a munk? What's it all about, Ira, I'm in trouble.
- 22:44How about a fix? Could they run a ring around on Fleet Lady?
- 22:47It's been done before, but it ain't easy, That's what I figured.
- 22:48How's Rudy Hauser on horses? He ain't. He got bought a long
- 22:52time ago. He never bets. I think you're wrong. Look no back.
- 22:56I know every guy in tom that's got the inch. Rudy Hauser nol.
- 23:00You know a guy named Ronnie stark. Sure, why nothing, may
- 23:03see you at the track. I'm gonna make a bet. Yeah, I'll
- 23:06tell the horses. Well, that left me in a hole. The fire
- 23:19was right, Rudy hawser on Fleet Lady didn't make a bit of sense.
- 23:22I got up to the track about two thirty. Jocko was there and Hellman
- 23:26was wandering around up in the grand stand where they couldn't push him into a
- 23:29starting gait. Sybil Thornton waved from her box as I walked by to get
- 23:33a better shot at the starting line for the sixth. They were almost at
- 23:37the post when Jacko came back from the betting window where Pepsy I bet two
- 23:42dollars on a horse call Scotch victory. It seemed like a good omen.
- 23:48Yeah. I saw your friend Rudy Hauser at the window. Huh. He
- 23:52was pouring money down on the papers to win. Well, that's why the
- 23:55odds are gone down on vent Air and sleepy Time. Yeah, look at
- 23:56that board, will yeah, Fleet Ladies gone all the way up to twelve
- 24:00to one, from eight to one, all the way up. Maybe the
- 24:03wood got around. She's dead now that's the funny part. She's down there.
- 24:08See number three on the rail, not a deep out of anybody.
- 24:14Hot brother is going to the front by run length, sleep be Time gal
- 24:18by ahead, Fleet Lady between horses is running third by one length. On
- 24:25the outside. It's vein air, an old soldier. Going into the clubhouse
- 24:30turn. It's hot runner by two lengths, Sleepy Time gal by a half
- 24:34length. Fleet Lady is moving up on the outside. It's beIN Air,
- 24:41fourth by one length, an old soldier. Now the back stretch, it's
- 24:45hot weather by two lengths. Fleet Lady moving up on the outside is now
- 24:52second by one length, sleep bloody house. You'd better hurry up or he
- 24:57won't see much the hurry. He left the track ten minutes ago. Are
- 25:02you sure jack him? Yes? I heard him tell so many He had
- 25:04to make a phone call just before the bedding clothes. Well, JACKO,
- 25:08you're a sweetheart. Oh I like to think. Let's go to that stable.
- 25:11The race is no, it was over five minutes ago. How about
- 25:15my two dollars come on? Well, yeah, there's only one person who'll
- 25:17try to fix a horse race. That's a horse. Oh. I knew
- 25:29there was going to be trouble fast. The horses were just coming under the
- 25:30wire when I waved to helme and started for the stable. When we got
- 25:33there, Sybil Thornton was clearing out like a fire sale. And then a
- 25:36hurry, Patsy, go and let me buy. You made a bad planes
- 25:38will stick around. You hurt him, lady, stick around. I'll take
- 25:41charge. That's a big gun, houses I got a big beef. Let
- 25:45me drop one hundred grands your idea, Rudy, Not this way. Let
- 25:49me drop one hundred grand, because you ran Fleet lady, program, said
- 25:52fleet lady. And that's who ran. I brought those odds in the line
- 25:56at the window. I already looked bad on Fleet lady. You didn't stay
- 26:00to watch your trail the field. He lost one hundred grand. You killed
- 26:03the ringer. You're a smart big shot who was gonna sew up the race.
- 26:07You ran Fleet Lady and cost me one hundred grand. All right,
- 26:11Copper, move away from it. Oh but this way, Sybil, Well,
- 26:15don't let him do it. Patsy, I want to see how tough
- 26:17you are. Come on, said well, let's shoe and me move against
- 26:19the star. Wat you houserd, you're back into the horse. Grab the
- 26:25horse. Novak's gonna trample him. Grab him. It's your idea. Yeah,
- 26:40yeah, you should learn the first time. You can't beat the horses.
- 26:44That's a bump joke, Novak. I guess it is now that we're
- 26:48all here, who do we book for Jackie Gregg's murder? Who's this guy?
- 26:52That's when you missed? Helman? Hello Stark, I know, well,
- 26:56what are you waiting for? Sybil? Tell the man you killed Jackie
- 26:59Gregg? Enough today running? You got more coming? You figured it out
- 27:03yet, Novak howser Dumpty's eddy grand on you? That's right, it's a
- 27:07lot of spending money. Wait a, I don't like this. You'll get
- 27:10your half, baby. I'm going to write out and I owe you when
- 27:12they book you for murder and the votes in. You can't use it like
- 27:17that. A dead girl can't spend forty grand. She killed your guy,
- 27:22Copper and tried to palm it off on Novak. I was there, so
- 27:23I'll testify, Honey, good God, don't be silly. I love justice.
- 27:30A booker for murder Copper. I want to tear up that. I
- 27:33owe you well. Hellman finally worked it out. Started out as a fixed
- 27:59race. When they were all through, it was up to the horse.
- 28:03Rudy Hawser put the squeeze on Sybil for some dough. She offered to run
- 28:07a fast ringer in place a Fleet Lady so Hawser could pick up a bag
- 28:11full. Rudy just wanted to make sure, so he sent one of his
- 28:15boys around a knock off Fleet Lady. Only the guy killed the ringer instead.
- 28:21Now that was a break for Sybil. She made a deal with a
- 28:23booky named Ronnie Stark to take all the Hawser's bets and guarantee him that Fleet
- 28:29Lady couldn't win because she wasn't that good a horse. It panned out that
- 28:33way. She let Hawser think Fleet Lady was dead. He spent the twenty
- 28:37grand at the window pushing up the odds on Fleet Lady and dumped another eighty
- 28:41on her to win the moving van. That was a phony story, Greg
- 28:47used to get me to scare Sibyl. He wanted in on the deal.
- 28:52He went back to the stable that night, gotten a beef, and she
- 28:55killed him. She had him out in her car when I went to make
- 28:59that phone call. She figured it was a good way to pass the buck.
- 29:06Helman asked only one question, Why would a nice team horse go crazy
- 29:10and trample a guy to death. Jocko had the answer. The horse that
- 29:15killed Hauser was a Philly. The American Broadcasting Company has just brought you the

- 30:52have to say that Pat Novak for Hire is one of those shows that really
- 30:57does make the cat for listening to a show more than once. I have
- 31:07to admit that I'm enjoying this a lot more of the second time through,
- 31:11and it's kind of odd in one hymn, but just seems a lot better
- 31:17this time particular. I love that line about the being as unhappy as a
- 31:23three legged man at ballet classic. All Right, some listener comments and feedback.
- 31:30Jones says, thank you so much for bringing back pac Novak. I
- 31:36just love his smart mouth. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 31:40And then we also have another listener comment on Pat Novak for Hire. The
- 31:48writers of this show were great, so descriptive and vivid and definitely paint some
- 31:56interesting pictures, particularly when talking about out All I saw of her was a
- 32:01vague outline. She had a nice vague outline. Stuff like that interesting as
- 32:07well as just in some ways this communicating emotions like the idea wishing for summer
- 32:14to come. And then we have one other comment on podcast Ali, not
- 32:21related to Patnovac that just says, keep up the good work, Adam,
- 32:24Well, thank you so much, and that will do it for today.
- 32:29We'll be back tomorrow with the adventures of Philip Marlow, and then next Tuesday
