- 0:12Hello, friends. Sean, here it is Friday.
- 0:16Congratulations. Hey.
- 0:18Hey. You have made it to the end of
- 0:20another mad week, I'm guessing. But here we are nonetheless.
- 0:25I hope you're going well. I hope that whatever the the
- 0:29craziness of this time of year is for you and your family or
- 0:33your situation, that you are still able to find a little bit
- 0:38of time in this Advent season as we walk toward that Manger in
- 0:44that little building long ago and far away.
- 0:49Unless you actually live in Bethlehem, in which case, how
- 0:52awesome is that? But for the rest of us, far
- 0:55away, let us just remember to pause just for a moment, and to
- 1:01revel in this glorious, glorious act of redemptive saving that
- 1:08our God engages in in this Christmas story.
- 1:11And as the world goes mad around us, let us just hold on to that
- 1:17in our hearts as we approach our Saviour born into our world
- 1:23miraculously for us. And so today we read a Psalm
- 1:28together, which is what we do, as you well know.
- 1:31And this Psalm 94 is a Psalm of lament.
- 1:35This is the psalmist praying that God would give them some
- 1:40retribution against their oppressors.
- 1:44This is a good old classic, Old Testament Psalm.
- 1:48When they say take them down, oh Lord, for they are bad and your
- 1:51people need your help. Sometimes we wish we could pray
- 1:57Psalms like this. So that's you and this is your
- 2:01Psalm. Let's put down the madness of
- 2:05the day. Come before God to read
- 2:09together. Psalm 94.
- 2:22Oh, Lord, the God of vengeance. O God, a vengeance.
- 2:27Let your glorious justice shine forth.
- 2:32Arise, O judge of the earth. Give the proud what they
- 2:35deserve. How long, O Lord?
- 2:39How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat?
- 2:42How long will they speak with arrogance?
- 2:46How long will these evil people boast?
- 2:49They crush your people, Lord, hurting those you claim as your
- 2:53own. They kill widows and foreigners
- 2:56and murder orphans. The Lord isn't looking, they
- 3:00say. And besides, the God of Israel
- 3:03doesn't care. Think again, you fools.
- 3:07When will you finally catch on? Is he deaf, The one who made
- 3:12your ears, Is he blind? The one who formed your eyes?
- 3:17He punishes the nations. Won't he also punish you?
- 3:21He knows everything. Doesn't he also know what you
- 3:25are doing? The Lord shows people thoughts.
- 3:30He knows they are worthless. Joyful are those you disciple,
- 3:35Lord, those you teach with your instructions.
- 3:39You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is
- 3:44dug to capture the wicked. The Lord will not reject his
- 3:48people. He will not abandoned his
- 3:50special possession. Judgment will again be founded
- 3:54on justice, and those with virtuous hearts will pursue it.
- 4:01Who will protect me from the wicked?
- 4:03Who will stand up for me against evil doers?
- 4:07Unless the Lord has helped me? I would soon have settled in the
- 4:11silence of the grave. I cried out.
- 4:14I'm slipping. But your unfailing love, O Lord,
- 4:20supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your
- 4:24comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
- 4:28Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side?
- 4:33Leaders whose decrees permit justice, they gang up against
- 4:37the righteous and condemn the innocent to death.
- 4:40But the Lord is my fortress. My God is the mighty rock where
- 4:47I hide. God will turn the sins of evil
- 4:51people back on them. He will destroy them for their
- 4:55sins. The Lord our God will destroy
- 4:58them. Jesus, you know all too well
- 5:12that that when we are oppressed and we see injustice, our heart
- 5:17flies to the NTH degree that just wants retribution against
- 5:22them. But here we read in your Psalm
- 5:26that your retribution is always motivated by pure justice, not
- 5:32for punishment but for restoration of the right way.
- 5:39Lord, help us always have our hearts focused on restoring of
- 5:44your truth and justice and not getting even for our own petty
- 5:51grievances. And thank you that you always
- 5:55have your eye tuned for the oppressed.
- 5:59You always have your ear ready to hear their cries, and may we
- 6:05be your hands and feet in those situations to hear the cries of
- 6:09those struggling and to respond. You are a just kind and
- 6:17uplifting God, and for that we thank you and we praise you.
- 6:24And it's in the mighty saving and loving name of Jesus that we
- 6:28pray. Amen.
