- 0:17It's the third hour of the Morning Show with Preston Scott as we are creeping
- 0:21to show five thousand. Great to be with you. Remember raising money for
- 0:25the WFLA Scholarship at the TCC Foundation. Find out more on the website at
- 0:30WLAFM dot com. We've raised a couple of thousand dollars for it. We've
- 0:35had it since two thousand and fourteen, and we help students that are working
- 0:40their way through school. They don't qualify for grants and pell grants and stuff
- 0:46like that. They're just students working hard that are paying their own way and
- 0:50we help them cross the finish line. And there's no other scholarship like it.
- 0:54And if you want to contribute, you can find out more again at
- 0:57WFLAFM dot com. Ash Preston, it's time. We are joined by Charlie
- 1:03Strickland of the Talent Training Group and of course co host of Talent Outdoors.
- 1:10We just we had another good laugh in the break listening to it again parts
- 1:14of it. Yeah, yeah, this microphones a squeak. I'm in a
- 1:18little grease something. I got some women and I've noticed every week since that
- 1:23segment you've slid something in to the show every week mentioning Greece or lubrication or
- 1:32something. I don't. I don't listen to the show. So when you
- 1:36played the segment back on the break, because I was letting the dogs out
- 1:38while you were in the parking lot when you were playing it, I walked
- 1:42in. I said, Grant, what did he play? Because I tuned
- 1:44in just soon enough to hear you talking about the fact that you had done
- 1:48it. That's why are we listening. I said, well, I need
- 1:49to know what mess I'm fixing to walk into. Just expanding your audience,
- 1:55because I promise you people were laughing. Oh well I didn't. I didn't.
- 1:57I hadn't heard the segment since we did it, and it had me
- 2:01laughing all over again. And I forgot half that stuff we said because j
- 2:05D and I we don't go back and peruse our notes for the show very
- 2:07often, since they don't exist. We just walk in. Last week's show,
- 2:13we walked in, had nothing to talk about. We were completely confused,
- 2:16and I pulled up A I was just sitting there waiting on Grant to
- 2:22start whatever he does over there, and I pulled up Facebook Marketplace just as
- 2:25because my brain goes different places and found the funniest thing we've seen in a
- 2:30long time. And the whole first segment was about a boat, and we
- 2:37had in tease, what's likely to happen this weekend? Well, so we
- 2:39found this eight foot john But you gotta even listening to the show because there's
- 2:43an eight foot all well To John boat for sale, and that sucker's got
- 2:47a fifteen horse Johnson motor on the back of it. On an eight foot
- 2:51John boat, I think get on plane about half a second flat, sure,
- 2:53And it's got a single seat in it and no old boy has put
- 2:58arm rests on the seat for boat seat swivel seat with arm wrest I've never
- 3:01seen it before, custom belt right, And he's got this thing and he
- 3:06and his dog. Turns out we're all running in the same circles over that
- 3:10a way. Who would know that a bunch of rednecks know each other.
- 3:15And he's got a bird dog, same GSP just like mine. I think
- 3:20they're probably ken based to my last dog, Dolly. But so anyway,
- 3:28we get talking about it, and i'd send him a message on Facebook.
- 3:30I said, hey, man, I just want to give your heads up
- 3:31because you I know your local and somebody may call you and he said,
- 3:37man, I got to hear it, and so I said, give me
- 3:39email, emailed him the segment. He made a slide show on Facebook with
- 3:45slides of the boat out him duck hunting in the boat with Pooky his dog
- 3:50on o cheesey pond and all this stuff dog on he promoted, said I'm
- 3:54read Nick famous, and he was proud of the fact, and everybody,
- 3:59all our mutual friends on Facebook, making a big deal out of it.
- 4:00And I said, well, why don't you just come on the show this
- 4:03weekend. He said, I'm there, and so, uh, you know,
- 4:09I was worried about offending him, and uh, he's all about it.
- 4:13Heck, yeah, well he can't. And somebody said, you can't
- 4:15sell the boat now, and now it's famous, and anyway, it's gonna
- 4:19be fun. It's the stuff we come up on. So now I've had
- 4:23people suggest you that you need to do a segment on the show about you
- 4:26know, because I awarded him the Redneck of the Day Award and I made
- 4:31it up right on the spot. So now it's a thing. So now
- 4:35we've got to Now we have to follow up. It's it's a subdivision of
- 4:40Florida. Man, it's hard to find that stuff. I said, Oh,
- 4:43I can find this easy. No, it's hard to it's hard you
- 4:46shop, it's hard to find stuff that actually have comedy potential. You know
- 4:53something want, But did you know that had comedy potential? No, I
- 4:57mean it just it's you guys that made it funny. It was just there.
- 5:00And I went and I thought the photo had been photoshopped and shrunk down
- 5:04or something, or it was resized wrong. The dead gum hull number on
- 5:08the boat was a third as long as the whole boat. And I said,
- 5:11something's wrong with this picture. And I got looking at it, and
- 5:14that's why I got funny to me on the show. Yeah, it's all
- 5:15that advanced preparation we do all right. Time to talk personal defense with Charlie
- 5:26Strickland of the Talent Training Group. A couple of stories I want to just
- 5:29get you to reflect on that are in the news. One is small little
- 5:33town in Minneapolis, southeast of Minnesota. Oh, thank you for the Milky
- 5:39Way. You're welcome. The Lindside joke there, Yeah, I've had that
- 5:43saved, just waiting. Another Talent Outdoors reference there, the infamous reconstitution of
- 5:51a milky way bar from one thing to another, to another to another.
- 5:55Yeah, they hold up pretty good in the truck, that's anyway. So
- 5:59the show all Town, the entire police department quit, they all resigned,
- 6:03they all left, just fed up, fed up with everything that's going on.
- 6:13What happens as we see fewer and fewer people want to step into the
- 6:18shoes of being a law enforcement officer. Man, that's the thing now.
- 6:23And people come to me. I have young people come to me and go,
- 6:27you know, I think I want to go to the academy, and
- 6:29I go, really, you know, is that what you really want to
- 6:32do? You can't come up with anything better to do? And listen,
- 6:36They're always going to be good people that want to be soldiers. There's always
- 6:40going to be good people that want to be cops. Most of the people
- 6:42who want to be cops are good people and they have the best intentions.
- 6:46But depending on where you want to go into law enforcement and what the attitude
- 6:49of the community in that area is and what the potential feedback. So if
- 6:55you if you're in a protected class, hey have at it, go be
- 6:59a cop. What do you mean by that protected class? If you're a
- 7:03cis gendered Caucasian male like me and you. I assume you're a sister and
- 7:11you're married and got kids. Assume that's the case, at least for the
- 7:15most part, So I think you're a little pretty. But anyway, there's
- 7:18a there's always that, you know. And so seriously, though, if
- 7:23you are a heterosexual, white male, going into law enforcement is got has
- 7:29got to be a tough call nowadays, especially if you're a conservative, because
- 7:33you are going to be targeted as soon as you do something. And I
- 7:38don't care if you are to protect a class, if you're a minority,
- 7:41or you've got some alternative lifestyle or whatever, your LGBTQ, whatever, if
- 7:46you do something that the left is or the community decides was too far.
- 7:51The fact that you have put on the uniform means that you've become one of
- 7:57the force, one of these, one of them, one of them,
- 8:00and so they will go after you too. But you're less likely to have
- 8:03that happen if you have some qualifying exemption, which means you're not a white
- 8:09guy, particularly a conservative white guy. Now that varies depending on location.
- 8:13As you were in Seattle, I would go you need to just move out
- 8:16of Seattle much less to join the police force. Although they need help,
- 8:20they don't want it here locally, depending on you know, the agency.
- 8:26If you go outside of Leon County, I don't you know. I'm in
- 8:30Jackson County and we're good. We're good. You know, every elected official
- 8:35leveator's Republican now and the community is what it is. And do they have
- 8:39all the officers serving in the Sheriff's department, all the deputies that they need.
- 8:45I don't know. I'm just curious if this thing has any I don't
- 8:48think. I don't think they're having any trouble finding people to work over there
- 8:52and find indecent the people I've seen come and go. It's a young force.
- 8:56But you know, the sheriffs I think on the second term, and
- 9:01you know, he's changed the agency, and the community supports what they're doing,
- 9:05and they need that support. I think if you go into the into
- 9:07the surrounding areas, into the conservative areas, is we're good, you don't.
- 9:11You don't see that. But if you go into the cities, the
- 9:13inner cities, and you're you've really got to take a and they pay more
- 9:18in the inner cities, and then the bigger communities. Leon County Tallahassee pays
- 9:22much better than the surrounding area. But it comes with that a risk.
- 9:28And listen, I'm not I'm just saying that the sheriff can support you,
- 9:33the police chief can support you, but the minute the community turns on you
- 9:37is something that you seriously have to worry about. See. Yeah, I
- 9:39see where agencies around the country, you're particularly people who have the mindset to
- 9:45be the protectors, are saying I'm out of here. And I applaud them
- 9:48for doing that because they made they made a point. Twenty two minutes past
- 9:54the hour The Morning Show with Preston skygran Allen over there in Studio one AM.
- 9:58Here in Studio one B with Charlie Strickland of the Talent Training Group,
- 10:03co host of Talent Outdoors, All Things Talent, and another story in the
- 10:07news videos out body camera police officer was responding to a call of broken glass.
- 10:18The guy responsible for breaking the glass in a residential neighborhood. She's the
- 10:20first responder. She's she's got some skills in terms of her place in the
- 10:26department. She's responsible for training cadets. I mean she's not new. Guy
- 10:33comes at her with a hammer in hand, body camera running. She's politely
- 10:39saying drop it, drop it, drop it, drop it, but he
- 10:41doesn't and proceeds to attack her and with the hammer. She's okay. She
- 10:48eventually does get her weapon out, but only after being wrestled to the ground
- 10:52and so forth, and discharged her firearm. He's lived to tell the tale.
- 10:58He's arrest and on and on. But Charlie, this to me is
- 11:03a classic example of the hesitancy that some officers are walking with because of the
- 11:09scrutiny you were just talking about from the wrong people. Yeah, so law
- 11:13enforcement should be held to a higher standard. Okay, So when you look
- 11:18at what a police officer does or a deputy sheriff does, you should hold
- 11:22them to a higher standard. We as a community should hold them to a
- 11:26higher standard than I would if that was somebody's grandma, okay, or the
- 11:31average civilian without the level of training that law enforcement officers should have, not
- 11:35necessarily always do have. And just because somebody's a trainer doesn't mean they are
- 11:41necessarily that much better than the next person. They just went to some classes
- 11:43and got some certifications and may be involved in it. But I didn't always
- 11:46speak to their true performance level, but only a patrol officer as well.
- 11:52And I haven't seen the video so this is new to me. But what
- 11:56I will tell you is that when I was training and still am actively involved
- 12:03in training law enforcement officers and people, is we it you suffer as a
- 12:11used to force matrix, so to speak. You know, when when someone
- 12:13reaches where a person, whether it be a civilian or law enforcement officers,
- 12:18feels that there's an there an imminent fear of death, a great widely harm
- 12:22through someone's word or actions. Someone has the ability, the opportunity, and
- 12:26the intent to do harm to them. Deadly forces justified. If someone has
- 12:31a weapon like a hammer and is raised it and based on the totality of
- 12:37circumstances, everything surrounding and everything that officer knows or should have known it or
- 12:41not should have known what they knew, and their perceptions based on size,
- 12:46intent, attitude, like everything, all of it, totality of circumstances.
- 12:50Then having a gun and a holster is not doing you any good at that
- 12:54point in time. So we do, in fact worry very much about legal
- 12:58const there once. It's why we're so big on teaching the law to civilians
- 13:03is because people will hesitate and it will cost you your life. Your opportunity
- 13:05to fight back, your opportunity to win is based on fractions of seconds.
- 13:09And if you're trying to sort out what might happen. If you know,
- 13:13if I do this, what are the consequences, that's the last thing should
- 13:16be going through your mind at that point in time. It should be am
- 13:20I in fear of death great body harm for myself or another? And if
- 13:22that answer is yes, then your fingers should be on the trigger. Okay.
- 13:26And then their actions did because they woke up that morning and wanting to
- 13:28do that. You didn't wake up saying I'm gonna shoot somebody. An officer
- 13:31doesn't wake up going today, I'm going to go to a call, a
- 13:35hot call, and this is going to be it. You never know when
- 13:37that occurs. You never know when a holster's coming out, I mean the
- 13:41gun's coming out of a holster. During your shift, you respond to things.
- 13:45But when we as a society beat them down on every decision they make
- 13:50used to the benefit of the doubt went to the officer, yep. Because
- 13:52we train them, we hold them to a standard. We do background checks
- 13:56on them. We just have to presume that the people fighting on our behalf
- 14:00in our community are right. We assume that our soldiers are right. When
- 14:03they bomb a village in Afghanistan or Syria or somewhere like that, we don't
- 14:07go pick that depart. You know, hey, there was a potential problem
- 14:11in there. They bombed a village, they killed a bunch of people.
- 14:13Hopefully they were the right ones. Well, in our community is completely completely
- 14:18different. When something happens all of a sudden, that person with a lengthy
- 14:24criminal history of violent history, someone who is a street thug, and that's
- 14:31and I'll use that terminology freely, someone who sells drugs on the street corner,
- 14:35someone who's been in trouble, has a sealed to juvenile or whatever the
- 14:37case is. They've got issues all of a sudden, they'd go to sun
- 14:43school every Sunday and they're a great kid, and the family puts that,
- 14:46and that's what the news picks up on. And so now you've needlessly slaughtered
- 14:50this this perfect you know, icon of the community. That's not the case,
- 14:56it's not, and but that's what the media spends. And then that
- 15:00ruins the law enforcement officer's career. So who wouldn't hesitate? I mean what
- 15:03reason person wouldn't hesitate? And that goes back to what we talked about in
- 15:07the prior segment, and then it boils down to who are you? You
- 15:09know? And it's gotten where it used to. It was just the white
- 15:13guys they were picking on now as everybody that they're going after regardless. I
- 15:16mean you're in blue or green, you're automatically wrong depending on the community that
- 15:22you're working or which part of the press picks it up. Morning Show with
- 15:31Preston Scott coming up to thirty six minutes past the hour. Charlie Strickland of
- 15:35the Talent Training Group with us our personal defense segments, and you got a
- 15:39chance to watch the video of the officer and the hammer and the attack.
- 15:43It's scary. I can put myself in her shoes very easily. But you
- 15:50saw mistakes made, Yeah, I mean things like using your dominant hand,
- 15:56your gun hand, to manipulate things on your uniform like your body camera and
- 15:58your radio mike and things like that, when you should be using your supports
- 16:02out of hand to do that. And I couldn't tell exactly in the one
- 16:06time we looked at it, but I felt like that might have occurred not
- 16:08having a gun out of the holster, which you know always you know,
- 16:12drawing your weapon is not a use of force. It is a show of
- 16:15force. It's different. But a lot of agencies said, well, if
- 16:18you draw your gun out of holster, you have to write a report that
- 16:21discourage his officers safety. And that's a silly, stupid thing to do.
- 16:26But but I mean even when you take into account camera distance, because sometimes
- 16:30camera's her further away. But the fact of the matter is he had a
- 16:34weapon in his hand. She said, she said, put that down.
- 16:37He said, what he starts coming down towards her with the hammer, didn't
- 16:41you know, said what like he didn't acknowledge it at that point, I'm
- 16:44pointing a gun at him, okay. And then he charged her aggressively,
- 16:48yelling, and she was trying to retreat a little bit, and it was
- 16:53it should have been bang bang, and you know, let the chips fall
- 16:56where they made. But she ended up risking her life trying to do that.
- 17:02And those are scenarios that you know, civilians and law enforcement should go
- 17:06over. I used to do it when I was a training officer. Go
- 17:07Okay, if we pull up here to the store and a guy comes running
- 17:11out the circle k with a shotgun, what do we do? You know,
- 17:14and he's running towards you with a shotgun, and you know, the
- 17:18wrong answer was, well, I call in my location, I put the
- 17:22car in park, I get out of the car, and I point the
- 17:23gun. No, the correct answer is I massive accelerator pedaling. I run
- 17:26his rear in over because that's the same lethal use of force, but way
- 17:33more effective. If you can hit him, and you're a lot safer and
- 17:37you've got you know, now you're more or less on equal footing. I
- 17:41mean, so that there's things like you have to think outside the box.
- 17:45I mean, so you mentioned well, I was just going to say,
- 17:48speaking of cars, I mean, the fact of the matter is whether it's
- 17:52in our area or nationwide, carjackings are up. Carjackings are violent. They're
- 17:56happening. Some are very sophisticated. They wait until someone's in a in an
- 18:00area where they can sort of funnel them, and then they pull in front
- 18:03and they charge the car. Basically, though, what should be thought of
- 18:11before something like that happens to everybody listening that drives a car and well,
- 18:14if you're you know, obviously situational awareness. We've talked about this time and
- 18:18time again. Living your life in condition yellow where you're aware of your surroundings,
- 18:22condition orangs where you identify potential threat. And then condition read is when
- 18:26there's the fight, because if you aren't paying attention, you're never going to
- 18:29see this shape up turn into a potential issue. You know, glancing your
- 18:34view mirror every once in a while when you're driving somewhere and if you've made
- 18:37several turns in the same cars behind you, you just think about it.
- 18:41I mean, you know, they don't have to be PARANOI let me just
- 18:44think about it. If you're on a side road, not on the main
- 18:47roads. We all go to the same places pretty much, population centers.
- 18:49But once you start going home or going to an isolated area, parking in
- 18:53places, you know, just if you go into the mall and you're going
- 18:57to be there for a while and it's getting close to dark, partner or
- 19:00street lights, so you know, But silly things like that, but they
- 19:03actually make a big difference. So having avenues of escape, you know,
- 19:08locking your car doors, a lot of them lock automatically, but locking your
- 19:11car doors and don't wait till the suspicious person walks near your car and you
- 19:15lock the car door. That's sending a signal and that's you know, so
- 19:18making sure you're secure in your car, being aware of your surroundings, having
- 19:23a way out, not out of your car, but to drive your car
- 19:26away from something. Somebody tries to block you in. Somebody bumps into you,
- 19:32you know, in this little fenderbinder, that may be a carjacking attempt.
- 19:34You want to make sure that you don't get out of the car and
- 19:37call the police, call nine one one, wait for them to get there.
- 19:41Pull over to a snafe, safe area. You know you don't have
- 19:45to. There's nothing says you have to get out until you feel comfortable,
- 19:48right, because that's also a technique used around the country. People will block
- 19:51you in, you can and if they are attempting to get in your car,
- 19:56leaf the force is authorized, guns or running them over. Don't worry
- 20:00about a piece of plastic barricade, run over it. Final segment Charlie Strickland
- 20:04with us from the Talent Training Group. Remember Talent Outdoors Saturdays and you can
- 20:10subscribe to the podcast, but it's on ten o'clock Eastern and you can stream
- 20:15it live or as I said, listen when the show's over, the podcast
- 20:18is released and you can listen whenever you like to talent out doors. How
- 20:23do you prepare for something like that? I mean, how do you prepare
- 20:29for the carjacking situation? How do you train for that? Well, most
- 20:36of us mental preparedness it is situational, this scenario thought process where you Okay,
- 20:42what would I do if? What would I do if? Now,
- 20:45if you have a firearm in the car, the way you prepare is you
- 20:49can do it at a gun range. You can do it in your driveways,
- 20:51as long as you don't have a lot of close neighbors. You're live
- 20:52in a townhouse. Probably not a good idea, but clear your weapon,
- 20:56put it on you, put it where it would normally be. You know
- 20:59that you would keep it and if you and then work on how do I
- 21:03get to it? Because if you've got a gun way over there in the
- 21:06glove compartment, you're not getting into that, Okay, I mean that's a
- 21:10silly place to keep one. I mean it needs to be in the console
- 21:12next to you, on your person. Now, with permitless carry, if
- 21:17you're a law abiding citizens, you just put it, you know, putt
- 21:19Some of that creates a challenge. You're in a seated position and having a
- 21:25firearm accessible, well, you need to be working. You need to practice
- 21:27it. You need to work on how do I get with an unloaded gun.
- 21:30You need to practice it so and make sure there's not one of the
- 21:33chamber and work on getting it from those positions and then pointing it towards the
- 21:37driver's door window and then pointing it through the front windshield. You can shoot
- 21:41through the front windshield. We have classes where we put glass on a car,
- 21:47clamp it on, shoot through the windshield to see what the effect is
- 21:49on a bullet. See the target in front a vehicle, then look towards
- 21:53the passenger side. I mean something you have to be considered. If you're
- 21:56sitting there at a red light, somebody hops in the passenger seat and says,
- 22:00you're taking You're taking me somewhere. You're getting how do you get the
- 22:04gun out of the console between the two of you. You know you can't
- 22:08just is it considered a legal or illegal place to hold your gun in the
- 22:17door panel where they have those little like holder compartments. If you put it
- 22:22in a snap holster, climp in there. You're fine, Okay, it's
- 22:29not on your person and it's not close enough to your person to as long
- 22:32as it's secured. Now, with permitless carr you can carry it on your
- 22:36person in the car without a permit on your person. Florida law stipulates that
- 22:41it's carried in the car and it's not on your person, then it needs
- 22:45to be secured. So if you're gonna put it not on you, it
- 22:48still needs to be snapped in a holster. It needs to be secured in
- 22:52some fashion, zipped in a case, something like that. So I would
- 22:55make sure that it was snapped in a holster if you put it in there.
- 22:57And I've seen and I've done it. I had it in a ulster
- 23:00and I had it clapped on the little plastic door pocket over there. But
- 23:03you know, when you're stopped by law enforcement and they say I want you
- 23:07get out of the vehicle, you're opening the door and you're exposing that not
- 23:11to mention, every time you open the door. If it's visible, everybody
- 23:15in the parking lot that's parking near you seize it and knows that you're leaving
- 23:18a gun in the car, which is not necessarily a good idea, But
- 23:21yeah, you could put something down in the door pocket over there and it
- 23:22would be fine. I would just on a traffic stop, you know,
- 23:25let the law enforcement know that it's there, so you don't have a confusing
- 23:27situation. But it can't be anyway. So having that would allow you to
- 23:34use your left hand to then draw point towards the passengers side if you need
- 23:38it to. And that's not a bad idea at all, But I mean,
- 23:41these are things you should think about. But if you have a car
- 23:42door's lock, you don't have to worry about people hopping in, And if
- 23:45somebody starts trying to break the window over there, you can always draw and
- 23:48use that. But just keep in mind if somebody by Florida Castle doctrine,
- 23:52this is Georgian Alabama too. If someone is a tempting to forcibly and unlawfully
- 23:57enter your occupied conveyance or your residents are dwelling, then deadly forces authorized because
- 24:03there's a presumption of violent attend on the part of the offender, and even
- 24:07understand your ground, they're committing a violent crime at that point, burglary of
- 24:11an occupied vehicle and so your authorized you's deadly force. That includes blated weapons,
- 24:18blunt objects, guns, running them over with the car so you can
- 24:22just drive away. You know, somebody blocks you in the traffic allows if
- 24:26you're you know, because you just have to think. But they can't just
- 24:30be blocking you in. You have to be able to articulate. It can't
- 24:33be like a protest and know where they blocked me in. I ran over
- 24:36all of them. No, they have to be trying to get into the
- 24:37car with you or assault you in some way. And you have to be
- 24:41either in imminent fear of death of great body harm or they have to be
- 24:44trying to get into the car. That's your only justification for that. So
- 24:48be careful when you get in those situations. You just can't be scared.
- 24:52They have to be trying to do something, so you know, you put
- 24:56a lot of thought into that, and certainly come out and talk to us
- 24:59about to reach out to us and we can help clarify. Thanks to the
- 25:02time. Yes, Sir Charlie Strickland of the Talent Training Group my guest Personal
