- 0:00Speaker 1: The Traders. It's finally here with the host. We can't
- 0:04Speaker 1: wait to get back on our screens. Gretel Coaleen, Good.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Morning, Wanning, Gretel morning.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Well, I mean, you know you're always going to be
- 0:11Speaker 1: the face of Big Brother for all of us. Did
- 0:14Speaker 1: hosting the Traders feel like a home coming to television?
- 0:18Speaker 3: Well, I've been on television on and off, yeah, over.
- 0:21Speaker 4: These last decades, and also since I was in my twenties.
- 0:25Speaker 4: It's so different now. I mean, I think Mel does
- 0:28Speaker 4: a great job on Big Brother. In the current iteration,
- 0:32Speaker 4: she does a great job. I'm very familiar with the
- 0:35Speaker 4: television world. But the things that were really sweet was
- 0:40Speaker 4: being in that environment where you're all in it together.
- 0:43Speaker 3: When we first Big Brother, the crew of one hundred and.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Something would all move up to the Gold Coast and
- 0:48Speaker 4: everybody was sharing apartments and working together. So we had
- 0:52Speaker 4: our own bubble, which was fantastic and really a great
- 0:56Speaker 4: chapter in our lives.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Many reminisce about those naughty days.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Yeah, and in this one we were not so naughty.
- 1:03Speaker 4: But we shot in Kimaru in New Zealand, and all
- 1:06Speaker 4: the crew had to live there.
- 1:09Speaker 3: We were all living there together.
- 1:11Speaker 4: We did twelve apps in twelve days, which is really
- 1:14Speaker 4: intense filming.
- 1:16Speaker 3: So that was similar the cameras and audio and all.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Those things I'm used to, but that community feel was fantastic.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Gretel.
- 1:24Speaker 2: For anybody who has never seen the Shan of course
- 1:27Speaker 2: is an American version, in English version and the Australian version,
- 1:30Speaker 2: just briefly explain to anybody new to the concept, what
- 1:33Speaker 2: is the Traders about.
- 1:35Speaker 3: It's a really simple format, and many people would think.
- 1:38Speaker 4: It's like a murderable board game or or a dinner
- 1:43Speaker 4: party game. It is simple, but it's beautifully executed in
- 1:48Speaker 4: this format. So a group of people and I've developed
- 1:52Speaker 4: a character. We're the only country in the world as
- 1:54Speaker 4: far as I know where that's been allowed. I it's
- 1:57Speaker 4: my mansion and I've got this had passed of dead
- 2:01Speaker 4: husbands and wives, eleven of them, and I libs mentioned
- 2:05Speaker 4: my parents were really wealthy and they've mysteriously died when
- 2:09Speaker 4: I was a child. The butler is my best friend.
- 2:12Speaker 4: He's aged and a bit of a drinker. So these
- 2:18Speaker 4: I invite these twenty two people to come and stay.
- 2:23Speaker 4: On the first day, I choose a traitor or traitors.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Nobody knows who they are except for those three, and
- 2:31Speaker 4: the remaining people are faithful, And every day there are
- 2:36Speaker 4: challenges to raise money for the winner to win. But
- 2:39Speaker 4: every evening there's a round table where people submit the
- 2:43Speaker 4: evidence as to who they think is a traitor and
- 2:46Speaker 4: who should therefore be eliminated, and they all vote, and
- 2:50Speaker 4: then that night, so someone is eliminated at the round
- 2:53Speaker 4: table because they're voted out by their peers who think.
- 2:56Speaker 3: They're a traitor. And then at night the traders.
- 2:59Speaker 4: That remain murder someone, and then the next morning the
- 3:04Speaker 4: players find out who it is.
- 3:06Speaker 3: It is.
- 3:07Speaker 4: It's such a simple idea, but we've got such strong
- 3:11Speaker 4: characters in the cast.
- 3:13Speaker 3: People.
- 3:13Speaker 4: When you're watching it, you can you play a long
- 3:16Speaker 4: Human behavior is endlessly fascinating anyway, just how wrong we can.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Be exactly, it's confidently wrong.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yes, yes, you say, I love that you're a character,
- 3:28Speaker 1: because I love the I mean, there are a few
- 3:30Speaker 1: iterations around the world, but I love Claudia Winkelman and
- 3:33Speaker 1: Allen Comming on the other two big ones, and in
- 3:37Speaker 1: the on the US version, Alan Comings. Wardrobe is a
- 3:40Speaker 1: character in and of itself. Do you get to choose
- 3:44Speaker 1: your wardrobe?
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah? Because I created a character.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I created a scrapbook and then had created references for
- 3:53Speaker 4: what I wanted to wear for the challenges and what
- 3:55Speaker 4: I wanted to wear in the house at all times.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Sam who's a New Zealander, helped source those so for me,
- 4:04Speaker 4: Claudia just sorry, I should just clarify. The format is
- 4:09Speaker 4: all over the world, not just in the ones that
- 4:11Speaker 4: we've seen. It's in ten twenty thirty countries around the world.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Alan Cumming lifted it in my eyes because he started
- 4:20Speaker 4: with his tartan, because their manners in Scotland, with this
- 4:24Speaker 4: extravagant tartans and drapery and headgear, and I do feel
- 4:29Speaker 4: that that was a little bit of an inspiration for
- 4:31Speaker 4: me to think word a minute, there are no rules here,
- 4:34Speaker 4: but our costumes their fantasy. Sometimes depending on the theme
- 4:41Speaker 4: of the mission where they're going to earn the money.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I'll be dressed according to that. Sometimes I'm in the
- 4:47Speaker 3: opening scene.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys have had a chance
- 4:49Speaker 4: to see that, it's.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Sad bride, like a murderous bride.
- 4:54Speaker 4: And so that's all what I was allowed to do,
- 4:57Speaker 4: which I really absolutely love. You mentioned each person can
- 5:02Speaker 4: kind of give you permission to go the next step
- 5:05Speaker 4: and realize what's possible.
- 5:07Speaker 2: How long into the filming of all this does the
- 5:11Speaker 2: real distrust amongst everybody become very very evident to everyone.
- 5:18Speaker 2: When does the tension begin? How long does it take
- 5:21Speaker 2: for people to work it out?
- 5:22Speaker 3: Isn't it interesting?
- 5:24Speaker 4: Some people are incredibly confident that they've worked everything out
- 5:27Speaker 4: right and they get go. The worst thing you can
- 5:29Speaker 4: do is tell people you've worked it out, because then
- 5:32Speaker 4: you're a sitting duck. So for people to start to
- 5:35Speaker 4: get paranoid, it's increasing because of course they're not sleeping
- 5:38Speaker 4: because you don't know if you're going to get murdered,
- 5:40Speaker 4: and also you're trying to put the evidence of the
- 5:43Speaker 4: day to try and anticipate who should you be aligning
- 5:48Speaker 4: on your side, who should you befriend, who should you
- 5:50Speaker 4: not trust? So it increases. It's a good question because
- 5:55Speaker 4: I think people are very shocked from the word go.
- 5:59Speaker 4: This old shakes and you realize, okay, you welcome to
- 6:03Speaker 4: my manner.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Things are not what you thought there would be. And
- 6:06Speaker 3: the naughtier you are, the longer you're going to survive here.
- 6:09Speaker 3: And this cast is packed with.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Reality TV veterans from you know maths and Survivor and
- 6:17Speaker 1: Big Brother, and there must have been a few that
- 6:20Speaker 1: come in thinking I Am going to dominate this and
- 6:23Speaker 1: then get a rude surprise.
- 6:26Speaker 4: There are, yes, there are some who definitely have that attitude.
- 6:30Speaker 4: There are some who are totally bewildered and don't realize
- 6:34Speaker 4: that it is.
- 6:35Speaker 3: A game of strategy.
- 6:36Speaker 4: It's a little bit like a chess game, because what
- 6:40Speaker 4: you've got to imagine if you really want to survive,
- 6:42Speaker 4: is the trickle effect of every move you make. If
- 6:46Speaker 4: you vote this person out, how does it make you look?
- 6:49Speaker 4: What are the ramifications of that? So you've got to
- 6:51Speaker 4: be looking at the whole board on.
- 6:52Speaker 1: That to think a step ahead.
- 6:54Speaker 2: You just can't go crashing through.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Yes, and I'm really interested, and I have no information
- 6:59Speaker 4: on this. If you weren't a tactical player, if you
- 7:02Speaker 4: were just going on your gut instinct, I wonder how
- 7:05Speaker 4: far you would go. Because some people they're absolutely spot
- 7:10Speaker 4: on with their gut instinct, but they don't play it
- 7:13Speaker 4: properly and so they're out, or they betray their own
- 7:18Speaker 4: instincts and go with the herd. Humans are fascinating. You
- 7:23Speaker 4: don't want to be alione this game. You're ostensibly alone.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, one more question I have to ask, how do
- 7:30Speaker 1: you keep a straight face where the faithfuls are adamantly
- 7:33Speaker 1: accusing the wrong person?
- 7:36Speaker 3: Well, you're assuming I do.
- 7:39Speaker 4: There are things that go on in our show that
- 7:45Speaker 4: are so delightful. I don't necessarily keep a straight face.
- 7:50Speaker 4: There's so much humor in our interpretation. It's not like
- 7:54Speaker 4: a solemn version of the game. Totally playful. It's funny.
- 8:00Speaker 4: A lot of the edit is joyful. It's celebrating the
- 8:04Speaker 4: ridiculousness of humans, and I think this is the perfect
- 8:08Speaker 4: time to see how we actually think. The power of confidence,
- 8:12Speaker 4: the power of who you trust and who you can't trust,
- 8:16Speaker 4: and the power of instincts.
- 8:17Speaker 3: It's just fascinating.
- 8:19Speaker 4: And the show increases in complexity as it goes on.
- 8:23Speaker 3: So yeah, it's worth watching.
- 8:26Speaker 2: It's just joyful and playful. Apart from the murder oh
- 8:28Speaker 2: yeah that.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It all starts tonight at seven thirty. It is a
- 8:33Speaker 1: great It is a fun show. It moves along at
- 8:35Speaker 1: a rollicking pace. We look forward to seeing you in charge.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Gretel. Thank you so much. Great to talk with you both.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Thank you, Gretel,
