Transcript
- 0:00Hello. I had myself a little nap. But stuff still
- 0:05happened. So what's up? We're at... War? We're
- 0:09not at war. Don't call it a war. Alright, the
- 0:13US is just kind of just going bazonkers and doing
- 0:17a lot of dumb shit. For example, renaming the
- 0:19Department of Defense the Department of War.
- 0:21Yeah, haha, Trump, the guy that everybody was
- 0:23like, oh, he's gonna start no more wars, literally
- 0:25is renaming the DOD to the Department of War
- 0:28again. If you didn't know, that was what it was
- 0:31originally called, kind of, and then it's been
- 0:32the Department of Defense. Now it's going back.
- 0:35My favorite part of all of this is that defense
- 0:37contractors are now war contractors, if we're
- 0:40gonna stick with the semantics. Which they've
- 0:43always been, like we've known that, but yep,
- 0:46I'm gonna invest in some war contractors. That
- 0:49sounds real good. So that's just like one...
- 0:52Little thing and they didn't really change the
- 0:55name. It's like a an alternate name that can
- 0:57be used But then they're saying that everybody
- 0:59has to use it It's a mess and it's expensive
- 1:02and it's a huge waste and it's basically just
- 1:05because Pete Hegseth is insecure a big scary
- 1:09Secretary of War It's it's genuinely embarrassing
- 1:13Except for it's also my nation cool. So what's
- 1:18the Department of War up to? Glad you asked couple
- 1:21different avenues here They can really walk and
- 1:23chew bubblegum at the same time because they
- 1:25are both intimidating the people of Chicago and
- 1:28also killing people on boats off the coast of
- 1:31Venezuela. Let's tackle that in order. Chicago.
- 1:34Trump posted a meme of like him invading Chicago
- 1:37with military helicopters. Like posted a picture
- 1:40of a city of which he is the president. on fire
- 1:44as he's invading it. They love to say that everything
- 1:47Trump does that's obviously egregious is to troll
- 1:51people, and then when people are like, hey, this
- 1:53is obviously egregious, they're like, ha, see,
- 1:56he trolled them, like I said he's doing. It's
- 2:00five -year -old shit, which is not surprising.
- 2:02Him doing something completely unacceptable and
- 2:04then people saying that's unacceptable, we shouldn't
- 2:07stand for that. That's not trolling, that's just
- 2:09being an ass. Solidarity with the people of Chicago.
- 2:12I'm sorry that this is happening to your city
- 2:14now. I do want to note though that it's not like
- 2:16the military is about to roll into the streets
- 2:18of Chicago and burn it to the ground and launch
- 2:21an assault. That's not what's happening here.
- 2:23Trump is a huge weakling and like doesn't actually
- 2:26have the power he keeps asserting that he has
- 2:27and he just keeps breaking the law and we keep
- 2:29not doing anything about it but he can only go
- 2:31so far before people would do something about
- 2:34it. So he's trying to toe that line of like how
- 2:36much can I do, how many headlines can I make,
- 2:38how much red meat can I give to my base before
- 2:40I actually get in actual trouble. Doesn't make
- 2:43it better, doesn't make it okay, doesn't even
- 2:45make it remotely alright. It's still fucking
- 2:48awful. Quit strong -arming cities that don't
- 2:51want your presence there. Don't know but moving
- 2:54on to Venezuela and the whole situation there
- 2:57because that's that's International scale pretty
- 3:00fucking big essentially out of nowhere the US
- 3:02bombed a boat that had left from Venezuela with
- 3:0511 people on board just Obliterated it no warning
- 3:09the top boys in the US government Trump Hegseth
- 3:12Etc all started to say this is a drug smuggling
- 3:14boat They said that it had 11 drug smugglers
- 3:17on board and a whole bunch of drugs Which is
- 3:19why they bombed it with military equipment. As
- 3:22with most things with this administration, engaging
- 3:25with the words they're saying on face value is
- 3:27disingenuous. They are lying and they don't care
- 3:29that they're lying. And yet, I'm gonna fall for
- 3:31the trap. That's not how any of this works. The
- 3:34military doesn't get to go after civilians of
- 3:36another country just because we claim they're
- 3:39drug dealers. First of all, they've produced
- 3:41exactly no evidence for this. None. Just they
- 3:45just said that that's the case. Our government
- 3:47is capable of releasing information and proving
- 3:49their claims, bringing people to court, even
- 3:51if they weren't going to give them their rights
- 3:54to a trial. They could at least give any evidence
- 3:57at all. But that's not the case. So yeah, international
- 3:59eyes are on this and they're like, you just bombed
- 4:02a civilian ship with military personnel. That's
- 4:05a war crime. It doesn't matter. They're not a
- 4:08military target. The Trump administration keeps
- 4:10trying to say that they're members of a gang
- 4:11and that gang is tied up with Venezuela's state
- 4:14government and so they're a supporter of terrorism
- 4:17and therefore it's a target or something, and
- 4:19all of that still doesn't apply. And here is
- 4:21why it doesn't matter. All the words that I just
- 4:24said were useless. Because JD Vance went on Twitter
- 4:27and when someone said, hey, that's a war crime,
- 4:29he said, quote, I don't give a shit what you
- 4:32call it, and he's being applauded for this by
- 4:34a lot of people. And I want to talk through that
- 4:35a little bit. Now, I am not, I don't really give
- 4:38a shit about this statement. Like, I don't care
- 4:40about the fact that he cursed. I don't care that
- 4:41he's being a bit of a dick. What I care about
- 4:44is the sentiment and what it expresses. It's
- 4:46perfectly in line with how they approach everything.
- 4:48Go right back to the Department of War. They
- 4:50think this is cool and a show of strength. They
- 4:54would happily bomb far more places and then just
- 4:57make up stories about what they bombed. to get
- 5:00people to support them in doing more war crimes
- 5:02because they think that they have the quote authority
- 5:04the absolute authority that's the term they keep
- 5:07using to just bomb shit as America the whole
- 5:11concept of like we shouldn't be the world police
- 5:13god like they're just saying we have the right
- 5:15to do this because vaguely we can say that they
- 5:19are drug dealers and drugs are dangerous to our
- 5:22society and therefore it's national security
- 5:25It's cynical and it's just them wanting to be
- 5:27able to bomb shit, mostly so they can distract
- 5:30from how terrible things are going domestically,
- 5:33and how not released the Epstein files are. And
- 5:36so with all of that, don't spend time asking
- 5:39questions like, where's the Second Amendment
- 5:41people now? Or where's the small government people
- 5:44now? It was always disingenuous. Where they are
- 5:47is cheering this on. Because this is what they
- 5:50wanted. This is what they voted for. And like,
- 5:52yeah, it's going to erode their own rights. The
- 5:55government's already talking about how they can
- 5:56try to strip guns from trans people, which is
- 5:59against the Second Amendment. The party who's
- 6:02like, absolutely no infringement whatsoever,
- 6:04ever, ever, is like, hmm, how can we infringe
- 6:06just a little bit? And then maybe we'll just
- 6:09crank that up over time. But like, even the NRA
- 6:12came out against that. Like, that's how out of
- 6:16pocket that shit is. Anyway, don't let the government
- 6:18lie to you to create the preconditions of war.
- 6:20We've learned this over and over. We're gonna
- 6:22do it anyway. Like, that's just what humanity
- 6:24does. On loop forever. But still. And that's
- 6:27not me being a doomer. That's not - That's just
- 6:29- That's just history, baby. Noooo - It's my
- 6:33Mario Party announcer impersonation. ICE has
- 6:36set a record for the largest single workplace
- 6:38raid in the Department of Homeland Security's
- 6:40history. It's the Hyundai LG factory thing. If
- 6:43you haven't heard about this, essentially what
- 6:44happened is there's a factory in Georgia that's
- 6:46currently being set up that's a joint venture
- 6:49by Hyundai and LG. ICE recently raided this factory,
- 6:52which is in the process of being set up, mind
- 6:54you, and arrested hundreds of South Korean nationals
- 6:58who they claim were working illegally. chained
- 7:00them up, detained them. So come here, come here
- 7:02real quick, because, yep, working illegally.
- 7:08They are illegally contributing to the economy.
- 7:12Let's back up, and then we'll come back to the
- 7:14whole bunch of people getting arrested and what
- 7:15happened. May of 2022, Governor Brian Kemp of
- 7:18Georgia is announcing the largest economic development
- 7:21project in the state's history. This project?
- 7:24A battery factory owned by Hyundai and operated,
- 7:27which would employ people in the area, but, you
- 7:29know. set up by a foreign company. For the past
- 7:31few years, they've been building this facility,
- 7:33they've been setting it up, and people from Hyundai,
- 7:36from like, you know, South Korea, where Hyundai
- 7:40is, have been coming over and setting it up.
- 7:42But here's the thing. Working in the United States
- 7:45sucks, and not only does it suck to just be a
- 7:49worker in general, but working here as somebody
- 7:51who doesn't live here is very confusing. Working
- 7:54here as someone who does live here is confusing
- 7:55too. like navigating healthcare plans, if you
- 7:58even get one. I digress. Point being, there's
- 8:01a whole bunch of different ways to be here to
- 8:04work. But ICE reportedly got a tip that shit
- 8:07was going down at this factory, so they went
- 8:08and raided it. Arrested hundreds of South Korean
- 8:11workers who they claim were here illegally on
- 8:14visas that either expired or didn't cover the
- 8:17scope of the work they were doing. So it's not
- 8:19even that they are here illegally. It's not like
- 8:21Hyundai smuggled in a bunch of illegal immigrants
- 8:24and had them do enslaved labor. They're literally
- 8:28just like here on visas and some of the visas
- 8:30were like they didn't check the right box or
- 8:32something to that effect. Now, could it be a
- 8:34systemic thing and the companies are trying to
- 8:36like skirt paperwork? Absolutely! That happens,
- 8:39and most of the time it doesn't matter because
- 8:41countries are not trying to kick out foreign
- 8:42investment because they want to go after people
- 8:47because they're racist. That is not what usually
- 8:50happens. Sorry, it's truly getting to be too
- 8:54ridiculous to even talk about. Where we are now,
- 8:56the people who were detained by ICE have largely
- 8:58been sent home. The South Korean government,
- 9:00the president actually, got involved directly
- 9:03and was like, hey, what the fuck? They got a
- 9:05plane chartered, people got on the plane, they
- 9:06went home. So that's mostly settled. But South
- 9:10Korea made a commitment to invest hundreds of
- 9:12billions of dollars into America, and this was
- 9:15part of that. And ICE essentially just came in
- 9:18and took a big dookie all over it. And now they're
- 9:20like, what's going on? Are we really doing this
- 9:22investment or is it not worth our time? So thanks
- 9:25ICE, you literally just cost a bunch of people
- 9:27from Georgia their future jobs. Because it turns
- 9:30out after a factory gets built, they hire people
- 9:33from around the factory. Weird. Oh, speaking
- 9:36of jobs, we got the jobs report and it fucking
- 9:39sucked. The job reports for August came out.
- 9:41Expectations were already pretty low. We expected
- 9:43around 75 ,000 new jobs and got 22 ,000. Just
- 9:4822 jobs. 22 ,000. Very abysmal. The previous
- 9:52two months also got adjusted. June now had job
- 9:55loss, which is the first time that that has happened
- 9:57since Trump's previous term when COVID broke
- 10:00out. I also want to note that as people have
- 10:01been pouring over the data and the jobs reports
- 10:03and all the economy stuff, wouldn't you know
- 10:05it, black women are affected by an outsized degree
- 10:09on all the job losses. Hundreds of thousands
- 10:11of black women have left the workforce and have
- 10:13not been able to return or were laid off, and
- 10:15it's way more than any other demographic by population.
- 10:19Maybe all that anti -DEI stuff has, uh, you know...
- 10:23misplaced values. You may recall that the last
- 10:25time that a job support came out, the numbers
- 10:27were so bad that Trump actually fired the head
- 10:30of the bureau that puts out the numbers. Unfortunately
- 10:33for him, again, he's a shitty president and doesn't
- 10:36know what he's doing, and telling people that
- 10:39they are not hungry only lasts so long. But moving
- 10:42on, I never said anything that I've ever said.
- 10:45That's my RFK Junior impersonation. I'm not doing
- 10:48the voice. RFK Jr. is a well -documented anti
- 10:51-vaxxer whose own family and a global coalition
- 10:53of medical experts call a threat to humanity.
- 10:56So anyway, the Director of Health and Human Services,
- 10:59RFK Jr., had a hearing in the Senate recently,
- 11:02and it was bizarre. Here's how basically every
- 11:05conversation between him and a senator went.
- 11:07First, the senator would be like, hey, you said
- 11:10this thing, and it sucks. To which RFK would
- 11:13be like, I didn't say that. You made that up.
- 11:16And the senator would be like, nah, I've got
- 11:18it right here. I've got a transcript. It's on
- 11:20video. To which RFK was like, no. And also, you're
- 11:24the problem, and I'm the solution, and anyone
- 11:27who believes you is wrong, and everyone should
- 11:30believe me. End hearing. It was basically back
- 11:32and forth with senators being like, you're inept,
- 11:34and him being like, nuh -uh. But for real, he
- 11:36essentially just sat there and denied that the
- 11:38COVID vaccine was effective, or at least hemmed
- 11:41and hawed about it, as opposed to being like,
- 11:42yes, obviously, the data shows that. And then
- 11:45he was like, I'm not an anti -vaxxer. And then
- 11:47he tried to downplay the fact that he continuously
- 11:49tries to link SSRIs to murders. He just said
- 11:52a whole bunch of crazy bullshit, which is completely
- 11:55par for the course. It's RFK Jr. A bunch of medical
- 11:58organizations are calling for him to step down.
- 12:01We've got measles outbreaks. Florida is trying
- 12:03to overturn vaccine mandates. The head of Health
- 12:06and Human Services is taking shots of raw milk
- 12:08and telling people that he can see their children's
- 12:12mitochondria. Last thing about RFK and the whole
- 12:14-ass United States before I move on. There was
- 12:16a 10 % drop in the stock of the company that
- 12:19makes Tylenol after it came out that RFK is likely
- 12:22soon to release a report that links Tylenol use
- 12:26in mothers to autism in children. Now... That's
- 12:31not true. The claim is not true. The stock drop
- 12:34did happen. There has been a ton of research.
- 12:37It's not, that this is not, it's just not a thing.
- 12:39It is not a thing and they're just gonna be constantly
- 12:41searching for, quote, the cause of autism forever.
- 12:44Because it's not a thing that we need to find
- 12:46the cause of. Stop it. It's not how this works.
- 12:50I'm so tired of having to say that's not how
- 12:52this works. Just be competent. A little bit.
- 12:58Ever. Elsewhere, Japan is down a prime minister.
- 13:02They only have the one, but it's gone now. Prime
- 13:04Minister Shigeru Ishiba has stepped down or announced
- 13:07his resignation a little under a year after taking
- 13:10office. Essentially, he took office and like
- 13:13right after that his party lost both the upper
- 13:15and lower houses of government. But he's largely
- 13:17been working to try to figure out what the fuck
- 13:19is going on with the Trump tariffs, saying that
- 13:21he wanted to get all that settled before stepping
- 13:23aside so as to not cause more chaos because the
- 13:25tariffs... are a lot. So he is stepping aside
- 13:28and he's calling for his party to do a vote to
- 13:29figure out who the new Prime Minister is going
- 13:30to be. I don't know a lot about Japanese politics.
- 13:33I'm not gonna pretend that I know anything about
- 13:35this guy, but there is a quote from him that
- 13:37I do want to read because it's very foreign to
- 13:40me as a resident of free country USA. Quote,
- 13:43I have consistently stated that I do not intend
- 13:45to cling to this position and that I would make
- 13:48a decision at the appropriate time after accomplishing
- 13:50what needed to be done. What needed to be done
- 13:52being settling the tariff stuff and now... He's
- 13:55doing that! Wow! Thanks, Guy! I mean, I don't
- 13:58know if thanks, Guy, but thanks, Guy! Over in
- 14:01eastern Afghanistan, there have been a series
- 14:04of devastating earthquakes. What started on August
- 14:0631st with the 6 .0 magnitude earthquake has resulted
- 14:09in several aftershocks, thousands have died,
- 14:12and thousands more have been injured. Entire
- 14:14villages have been wiped out, and a lot of the
- 14:16villages in the area are mud and stone construction,
- 14:19and they were just devastated. I do want to say
- 14:21that there are efforts, there are rescue efforts
- 14:23and aid efforts now in the area, but the continued
- 14:26aftershocks, there were two more earthquakes
- 14:27after the initial one that stopped efforts for
- 14:30a while. Like, there's so much rubble and so
- 14:32much destruction that it's hard to navigate in
- 14:34the first place, let alone while there's also
- 14:37the threat of earthquakes. But it's another example
- 14:39of people coming together in the face of absolute
- 14:41horror to help each other. They're a long ways
- 14:44away, but my heart goes out to everyone who was
- 14:47affected by this disaster. And just once more,
- 14:50like, thank you to any and everyone whose focus
- 14:54in this world is to help people in their time
- 14:57of need. Stay righteous, y 'all. Game it! Silk
- 14:59Song is out. Silk Song is out. Silk Song is out.
- 15:02Silk Song is out. That's my Silk Song song. You're
- 15:05either hyper aware of this game, or you have
- 15:08no idea why everybody's freaking out, or you've
- 15:10no idea what I'm talking about. But Silk Song
- 15:12is out. What the hell is Silk Song? You know
- 15:13those things that are just like franchises that
- 15:16become a meme when you're just waiting for the
- 15:19next installment? You've got your Game of Thrones,
- 15:21you've got your Grand Theft Auto, stuff like
- 15:23that. We've been joking for decades about Half
- 15:25-Life 3 at this point. Silksong is kind of one
- 15:27of those. So there was a really popular game
- 15:29called Hollow Knight where you play as a bug
- 15:32and you explore stuff. It's really sweet, really
- 15:34casual. That's not true. It's very hard. I suck
- 15:36at it. Silksong is a sequel, or the next game
- 15:40in that franchise, and the developers announced
- 15:43it in 2019. Now, as an indie game developer,
- 15:46I am very, very aware of... how long it takes
- 15:49to build stuff, so like no hate against the studio
- 15:51for needing time to build an amazing game. However,
- 15:55essentially years of speculation of when this
- 15:57game is gonna come out led to it just reaching
- 16:00that same meme status of like GTA 6 and Half
- 16:03-Life 3, etc. And then lo and behold, like a
- 16:07couple weeks ago, they announced... that it was
- 16:09gonna come out on September 4th. It was a blindside
- 16:12announcement, so much so that other game developers
- 16:14rescheduled their launches two weeks out. And
- 16:17then on launch day, there was so much hype that
- 16:20it brought down basically every digital storefront
- 16:24worldwide. Steam, Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation,
- 16:27and GOG all went down when it launched. So that's
- 16:30neat. I don't... I'm bad at it. I hope if you're
- 16:34excited about this game... Have fun, have a blast.
- 16:38I suck at Metroidvanias. Hey, do you want more
- 16:41of this? Stuff Keeps Happening is supported by
- 16:44listeners, readers, and viewers like you. I'm
- 16:46like PBS over here. I'm like PBS, but I can swear.
- 16:49Your support is how I keep this ad free. It's
- 16:52how I'm able to stay independent, say the things
- 16:53that I want to say without worrying about is
- 16:56the advertiser gonna let me. If you have the

- 17:13just random bonus shit like me reading a hilarious
- 17:16fan fiction like an audiobook. If any of that
- 17:18sounds interesting, or if you just want to help
- 17:20me out and help keep this going, I deeply appreciate
- 17:23it. Head to isupport .dev. Alright, let's move
- 17:27on to... Oh. Lightning round! Sorry, that wasn't
- 17:30good enough. Let's try that one again. Lightning
- 17:33round! Australia hates fun, and so now you can't
- 17:35have the soy sauce packets that come in a little
- 17:38fish. It's like a little fish -shaped packet.
- 17:40It's because it's a single -use plastic. Like,
- 17:42we should ban those, but... but my fish. There's
- 17:44limited early research into the potential use
- 17:47of an over -the -counter nasal spray that might
- 17:49be able to significantly reduce the chance of
- 17:51COVID infections. I want to conclude this is
- 17:53early. It's early! But it's... it's... that's...
- 17:56that's huge, if true. Ranchers and biologists,
- 17:59wildlife experts, etc. are experimenting with
- 18:01using drones that blast music and like movie
- 18:04lines at wolves to keep them away. Literally
- 18:08blasting AC DC at a wolf. About as metal as it
- 18:12gets, Aura, the ring, the, like, wearable fitness
- 18:15ring thing, they made a partnership with the
- 18:18Department of Defense, or I guess the Department
