- 0:07I'm Hillary Condon, welcome to a Football Friday edition here on
- 0:11the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Nothing would make me happier,
- 0:14by the way, than the next 25. So onward and upward the station
- 0:20goes. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:22program. We will start in 25 minutes or
- 0:25thereabouts with our friend Tom Kecker.
- 0:27He covers Iowa transfer portal closes up today.
- 0:30We'll get the latest on that. Obviously, Iowa big game on the
- 0:35hardwood tomorrow. They're in Bloomington to take
- 0:37on Indiana. The ladies got a nice win last
- 0:40night. Stalky, what a line.
- 0:42Didn't see any of it but her boy or box score today.
- 0:44Looks like she must have played a heck of a basketball game.
- 0:48So we'll get into that. There's a lot of topics with Tom
- 0:51Kecker. Look forward to talking with him
- 0:53in about 25 minutes. We're all off on Monday, all of
- 0:56us, meaning all three of the local shows are off on Monday.
- 0:59So Bama, Bob, Trent and I will preview the National
- 1:02championship at 12:45. Travis Hines will join us at One
- 1:06O Clock. Eugene Repay is on an airplane
- 1:08headed to Cincinnati. Travis Hines on Iowa State
- 1:11topics coming up at One O Clock. And then off we'll go to Las
- 1:14Vegas and catch up with a friend, Mike Palm, VP of
- 1:17Operations at Circus Sports, what he's seeing on these 4
- 1:20divisional games as well as the national championship.
- 1:24We'll talk to Mike about those topics and more when he joins us
- 1:27coming up here at 1:30. I'm kind of feeling like you
- 1:30today. I hate baseball and I'm starting
- 1:33to really get pissed off at this.
- 1:34Sport way away. You were a pitch away from a
- 1:36World Series. Oh man, it must be crappy to be
- 1:39a Blue Jay fan. Well, it's I'm not going to shed
- 1:41any tears. Here's the here's the lineup.
- 1:43Just just let it run this by it. I mean they're going for three
- 1:46in a row. Otani leads off, then Bets, then
- 1:48Freeman, then Tucker, then Will Smith, Max Muncie, T Oscar
- 1:51Hernandez. Paw has who hit 30 real bat 8th
- 1:54Tommy Edmund starting pitching, Yamamamoto Snello, Tani Glass,
- 1:57Sasaki and out of the bulk the bullpen comes the Mets closer
- 2:01Edwin Diaz, who's now a Dodger. It's just wins enough, enough.
- 2:05We reached a tipping point. I've said for years it's a dumb
- 2:07sport. It's stupid.
- 2:08Yeah, now thankfully you're finally catching up with me.
- 2:11But I've been saying this for years and it's not a real sport.
- 2:14It is it when you can have one team that has this much it's.
- 2:18Ridiculous. This is what Alabama was in
- 2:21college football when they were. Getting even more than.
- 2:24That and it's taken it two yes, absolutely a new level.
- 2:26It is not enjoyable, not fun and on top of it, OK, so they'll go
- 2:34through the regular season. There'll be some point in Bay.
- 2:36I don't think they're going to do it this year.
- 2:38And then I'll hear it again in June.
- 2:40And then unfortunately, I'll have to get the text messages
- 2:42from you in July and August and September and October.
- 2:44But you're going to try to sell yourself about it.
- 2:46I'm going to say don't. They'll be fine, as John Bowen
- 2:49Camp tells us all the time, and they are always fine.
- 2:52It's unbelievable, $60 million a year for Kyle Tucker.
- 2:56Just crazy. Not very good.
- 2:58He's, I agree with you. He's not that.
- 2:59He's I'm, he's a nice player. I didn't want the Cubs to get
- 3:02him. I thought it was going to
- 3:04handcuff them financially too much.
- 3:05Yeah, I. Didn't want it from the get go.
- 3:08We saw him this year. We saw the ACT.
- 3:09Mm hmm. No, this is a lot of games.
- 3:11He spends a lot of time on the the injured list, so we'll see.
- 3:15But Cubs? Fancy dodged a bullet.
- 3:16I think they did, yeah, I think they did in a lot, in a lot of
- 3:19ways. Well, he's a Dodger now and
- 3:22anyways, lots of ground to cover.
- 3:23Didn't want to start with baseball, but I just, I was
- 3:26good. And then I saw a Bichette sign
- 3:28with the Mets. So that just, you know, took, I
- 3:31got my rage meter up again. Let's let's talk some football,
- 3:34let's talk some basketball. But let's start with the ladies.
- 3:37I didn't watch it. As I said yesterday, I'm going
- 3:39to sit down, put my feet up and watch my Winnipeg Jets in the
- 3:41Minnesota Wild. And that's what I did.
- 3:44It was a selfish night for me because I can't, it's been a
- 3:46long time since I just watched start to finish, right?
- 3:49And I'm 67. I'm going to do those more often
- 3:53so, but by the sounds of things the Lace had pretty good game,
- 3:57and Stalky in particular. She was, she was good.
- 4:00I thought this story was adding deal.
- 4:01Though, Yeah, yeah. And with a.
- 4:03Stakow said that too. I think it is peace.
- 4:05Yeah, now Stalky hitting a couple of jumpers, that was.
- 4:08Oh, did she? That's what took it a step
- 4:09further, I think for Stalky instead of we know Stalky, we've
- 4:12seen her for four years. She's a great rim runner.
- 4:14She is elite. She is one of the best in the
- 4:16country year after year with her athleticism, her speed, with her
- 4:20size, getting down the floor, get that run out.
- 4:23She is incredible at that. The unfortunate part is Hannah
- 4:26Stokie hasn't added a whole lot of other dimensions to her game.
- 4:30She's not a back to the basket post type of player.
- 4:32That is not her strength. Ball handling hasn't improved.
- 4:35And the other part, the reason we saw last year, she had to
- 4:37morph back into the center because she hasn't really
- 4:40generated a great jump shot. Not a consistent one.
- 4:43We should put it that way. And it showed up last night, a
- 4:47sign of things to come because with hide in the middle her at
- 4:50the four, you're feeling great. Obviously chitchat running the
- 4:53show, what she can do. And now if you throw Addie deal
- 4:57into the mix. Who was seven of nine?
- 4:58I see Trent. She was knocked.
- 5:00Out for four from three. And a couple of those were deep
- 5:03threes. Were they?
- 5:04They were like logo threes. Not that far, OK, but they were
- 5:08deep. I think we have to just set her
- 5:10on the side. But they were.
- 5:11There were a couple of 23 footers in there that she was
- 5:14ready to go. It's taken a while.
- 5:17It's taken her a while to acclimate to the speed of the
- 5:19game to not everybody can be Caitlin Clark, but you're seeing
- 5:23the reason that she was a five star.
- 5:25She had to play a couple of games ago.
- 5:27She made a bit spin move in the paint.
- 5:28I think she only finished with five points, but both of her
- 5:30buckets were really but maybe but the Indiana game.
- 5:33But regardless, she is the type of player though that you can
- 5:36see all right, It's starting to catch up with her.
- 5:39She's starting to figure out the college game, the speed, the
- 5:42physicality, all those different things.
- 5:44And it's not that she's going to score 18 a game going no that
- 5:46that's unrealistic. But if she could be this year,
- 5:49but a minimal, just an option off the bench because obviously
- 5:52her upside is incredible compared to Taylor McCabe.
- 5:55Like we don't Taylor McCabe, right?
- 5:58Really good shooter, not an elite athlete by any means,
- 6:01Deal. Better athlete, better size, the
- 6:04kind of things that you put her in a Sweet 16 match up against a
- 6:07really good team. You feel more confident maybe
- 6:10pulling an upset in a game like that.
- 6:12So I was for box defense yesterday.
- 6:14She was outstanding again and you know it really started to
- 6:17click with her. It felt like defensively a gear
- 6:19ago. You can see her on as a non ball
- 6:21defender and her importance and what she can do.
- 6:23You go back to the Indiana game also for her and what she did on
- 6:26the ball, what she did against Oregon's best player last night
- 6:29and this team is. There's six of no trend in
- 6:31conference play. And you think about it outside
- 6:34of the veterans, McCabe, Stalky and Fierbach, who all are
- 6:38important, everybody else is not just they're all underclassmen.
- 6:43I. Like.
- 6:44That that's that's really, really good.
- 6:46I mean, you're talking about still in average, a very young
- 6:50basketball team that's going to learn together.
- 6:52Chitchat sophomore, Hayden sophomore, Deal freshman and
- 6:57Stremmelow sophomore. You got a bunch of players that
- 7:00can do a lot of different things.
- 7:01You're still adding to that mix. Jan Jensen, she's getting this.
- 7:05And one thing that I really like just over all about this squad
- 7:07is they're a lot better defensively than they were under
- 7:10Ballooner even before Caitlin Clark, who was as we don't, not
- 7:14a great defender by Eddie means. Even before that though, that
- 7:17was always the teams that we saw out of blue.
- 7:20They were going to be fun, they were going to get up and down
- 7:22the floor, they were going to score with anybody in the
- 7:23country, but couldn't always get those stops and certainly
- 7:26against some of the elite level teams.
- 7:28Not that this Iowa defense is elite, but it's better than an
- 7:31average women's basketball team over the last 20 years and I
- 7:34think that adds a little bit more excited about what could be
- 7:37and what they can be going forward.
- 7:39All right, let's, let's get to the men's tomorrow.
- 7:42Indiana for Iowa, Cincinnati for Iowa State.
- 7:45Iowa State struggled somewhat against Oklahoma State, although
- 7:49we both came away thinking, I mean, the Cowboys are better
- 7:51than I think that we thought. And then obviously they get beat
- 7:54by Kansas. So by the way, there's a Friday
- 7:55night Big 12 game tonight. Is that big fox Baylor at Kansas
- 7:59good? Yes, absolutely.
- 8:00But to Iowa State, Cincinnati tomorrow.
- 8:03How important is this game? It is just kind of calming the
- 8:07nerves, right? Because kind of how I look at
- 8:09it. I think we could sense that with
- 8:11these slow starts and just the pressure of that undefeated run.
- 8:14All right, that's the side now we move on and it was obviously
- 8:18awful in Lawrence, but just move past it.
- 8:21But even if you struggle, let's say they play kind of like
- 8:23Houston did when they were over in Cincinnati a couple weeks
- 8:25ago. You play like that, you pull out
- 8:27of victory, but it's it's tighter than you want.
- 8:30Houston won by 7. And they were down pretty big in
- 8:33that game before they came back and ultimately got the cover on
- 8:36top of it, which was nice. If it it's like that, though, I
- 8:39think some of those kind of nervous feelings that's
- 8:43happening right now with Cyclonation, I think it
- 8:45continues. I really do.
- 8:47I believe that you're going to have the questions and what we
- 8:50saw a year ago, what we've seen with this squad, a lot of those
- 8:53questions are going to start to kind of build upon themselves.
- 8:55If you lose to a Cincinnati team that has Jizzle James back,
- 8:58Jizzle James can beat a lot of teams.
- 9:00He can also shoot a team out of a game pretty quickly, as we've
- 9:03seen throughout the course of his career.
- 9:05You should win. It shouldn't be a difficult one.
- 9:07But Cincinnati's going to be ready for this one.
- 9:09This is the opportunity for them and Wes Miller, their coach.
- 9:11He's coaching for his job now. He's got a ton of work to do to
- 9:14get this team in the NCAA tournament, but a desperate
- 9:16team. Big spot, big moment.
- 9:19Got to be ready to go. And let's be ready to go from
- 9:21the opening 10. Wouldn't that be something?
- 9:22Yeah. Wouldn't that be fun?
- 9:23I'm trying to find the number. I see I was getting a point and
- 9:261/2 on the road. The Cincinnati Iowa State game
- 9:30is not. It's got to be, I just must not
- 9:32be able to find it was I scroll through all of these damn games.
- 9:36There is a lot of totally macro I do.
- 9:38Are you on wager talk? I'm doing the exact same thing.
- 9:40I don't. Even see where Cincinnati and
- 9:42Iowa states. Listed well, let me use the.
- 9:44You know there's a fine tool. Is there?
- 9:46No, I did not know. Oh, I see it.
- 9:48Iowa State is 6 1/2 point favor to DraftKings.
- 9:52FanDuel. They are 7 1/2.
- 9:54Just right where Cincinnati are we?
- 9:55Houston was when they went to Cincinnati.
- 9:58By the way, Cincinnati gets Iowa State tomorrow and then on
- 10:02Wednesday, Arizona, yeah, that'll be a fun back to backers
- 10:06for them. But who cares about Cincinnati?
- 10:08Let's get Iowa State the win, put it in the win column and
- 10:11feel pretty good about this squad again.
- 10:13And as you said, let's see if they can, you know, get out to a
- 10:15quick, quick start. All right, Indiana, Iowa.
- 10:18Indiana's a point and a half favorite, I think.
- 10:21And maybe this is based on what we saw in West Lafayette this
- 10:26past. Was it Wednesday or Tuesday,
- 10:27whatever early in the week? The Purdue game I'm referencing
- 10:30because of what we saw and how well they played on the road and
- 10:33how if it would have, should have, maybe I'm too confident I
- 10:37was going to win this game tomorrow.
- 10:38Yeah, I wouldn't put it in a confidence scale, but Indiana's
- 10:42no great shakes. You know, this is not a great
- 10:44team by any means. And some of the things that they
- 10:46do well, the way that they play, I think fit very well.
- 10:50This is one of those winnable games.
- 10:51This will in the end be a quad one victory.
- 10:53And as we talked about, that resume looks very good with the
- 10:56Ken Palms of the world and the net rankings.
- 10:59But the other markets, what you've actually done, your
- 11:01resume is not very good. This would be a resume building
- 11:04win. Both teams come in with losing
- 11:06streaks, 2 in a row for Indiana, three in a row for the Hawk
- 11:08guys. Speaking of desperate teams, as
- 11:10we talked about with Cincinnati, 2 desperate teams here, I think
- 11:13this is going to be a really fun game that's going to come down
- 11:15to the wire. But I mean, if you can play like
- 11:17that against Purdue, you can certainly go into Assembly Hall
- 11:20and give yourself a chance. Now, soft rims in the first
- 11:23half, I mean, three of those 3 pointers probably don't follow
- 11:26the Assembly Hall, right? And also, it goes without
- 11:30saying, Bennett Sturtz needs to be a lot better.
- 11:33He has to be a lot better. The three-point shooting has
- 11:36been awful. Well, especially at clutch time.
- 11:39Yes, down the stretch he did it against Illinois, he did it
- 11:42twice again against. Forcing shots, it's almost, he
- 11:44almost feels like if it's not, if I don't lead this team, we're
- 11:48not going to win. So he's shooting, then maybe he
- 11:50should be getting more of his teammates involved.
- 11:52He's at 63 pointers during this three-game losing streak.
- 11:55The problem? It took 27 shots to get there. 6
- 11:59of 27 from three. That's too much.
- 12:01Get to the rim. Yep, he had that and one, those
- 12:03are the plays he needs to make. Yeah, he did have one against
- 12:07Purdue. You're right.
- 12:07You're 100% right. All right, let's move on.
- 12:10Let's get to a football divisional round coming up
- 12:12tomorrow of the four games and the point spread reflects it The
- 12:18the Seattle's favoured by 7. Sam Darnold has an oblique.
- 12:21Drew lock is the backup in Seattle.
- 12:24I think the one that could get one get away is that one.
- 12:31I just when I when I look at this Niners, I mean, Brock Purdy
- 12:35has so much to do if his if this team is going to beat Seattle,
- 12:40this is a really good defense with a really good secondary.
- 12:43They're, they're solid all over the place.
- 12:45I think. I think Seattle might be the
- 12:48Seattle. San Francisco might be the game
- 12:50that, you know, kind of not a lot of drama.
- 12:52Then we're not in the, you know, the final 10-5 minutes of the
- 12:55football game thing. Boy, they need to play here.
- 12:57This game could go either way. I think Seattle's going to beat
- 13:00them convincingly. I'm not surprised.
- 13:02I didn't know that you had that much love for Drew.
- 13:05Lock. I do like Drew Lock.
- 13:06Of course you know that Drew Lock was my guy in Denver.
- 13:10He's the next. Well, some days and then there's
- 13:12some days he come in and say this is the worst quarterback
- 13:14I've ever seen. Yeah, we see.
- 13:15We've heard the highs and lows from you with Drew.
- 13:17Lock. So you think it's going to be
- 13:19locked? No, but when we show up for a
- 13:22team coming off a bye week on Thursday and.
- 13:25All of a sudden, this is. That middle of the afternoon
- 13:26that came out yes, yes and all and I I saw it on NFL live and I
- 13:33had the TV on. Oh, I was cleaning the houses.
- 13:36We got the in laws coming to town.
- 13:37So I was I was cleaning the basement.
- 13:38So I I was running and I was like, is this a replay?
- 13:42Is it like I couldn't wrap my mind around it?
- 13:44How did I just miss it? Had there been anything leading
- 13:48up to? This nothing, nothing.
- 13:50And young Kubiak, what's his name?
- 13:52Clint. Yeah, he he mentioned that, you
- 13:55know, Darnold been getting all the the this snaps with the ones
- 13:59you're in practice until yesterday.
- 14:01So. Well, here, let me ask it this
- 14:03way, Mr. Sam Darnold Hater, is that that big of a drop off in
- 14:07your mind? Darnold to Drew lock?
- 14:09I don't think it's is it an upgrade to go to Drew?
- 14:11No. No, I'm not going to go that
- 14:13direction. But I mean point spread wise,
- 14:15I'm going to ask this, this is on my list for Mike Palm.
- 14:17What is we find out tomorrow afternoon that it's it's going
- 14:21to be lock. We know quarterbacks, great
- 14:23quarterbacks, 7 to 10 points you're talking about depending
- 14:27on who the backup is, how good that guy is, how important they
- 14:30are to the offense. But seven to 10 points is what a
- 14:32quarterback compared to a backup at the elite level.
- 14:35What is it with Sam Darnold? Drew Lock 2 1/2?
- 14:38Well, I'm. Thinking it's a half because
- 14:39there was a bunch of seven and a halfs in the market yesterday.
- 14:42It's seven everywhere today, so maybe.
- 14:44It's been a but that's just what the question, right?
- 14:46That's not official. That's not the official that's.
- 14:48Fair. That's fair.
- 14:49That's what I want to find out is if it does that and it's at 7
- 14:52now, does it go to 5 1/2 right away and we kind of see where it
- 14:55goes? Do you drop it that
- 14:56significantly? You'll worry about getting
- 14:58middle benefit? Do you like the Niners in this?
- 15:00Oh, absolutely. You really do.
- 15:02And here's another component. Why though?
- 15:04Here's an angle away from the football field, OK, Something
- 15:09that I think motivationally, we're talking about NFL teams,
- 15:12we're talking about good football teams.
- 15:14I know the Niners are banked up is the component.
- 15:18Very easily, 49ers could have had normal rest.
- 15:21Very easily they could have put this game on Sunday and the NFL
- 15:25instead of doing the right thing.
- 15:27Player safety, you know, is not real.
- 15:30Those the suits don't care about.
- 15:31And it would have been an expense of the Bears game
- 15:33because the Houston's not played.
- 15:35Houston played Monday. They're not coming to play out
- 15:37on Saturday. They cared more about going out
- 15:41and getting the best ratings than actual player safety.
- 15:45And now that motivational edge, they don't want us there.
- 15:49We know the power of those kind of messaging in any sport, that
- 15:53kind of messaging, nobody believes in us, they don't want
- 15:56us those kind of things. I think the motivational edge is
- 15:58significantly in the 49ers advantage with that Trent
- 16:02Williamson play when they played a couple weeks ago.
- 16:04Now he's going to be out there. How different that's going to be
- 16:08for that offense now time to prepare a team that they know
- 16:11incredibly. Well, just playing 13 days ago.
- 16:14It was one thing to go up against Victoria's defense and
- 16:16what he did last week against Philadelphia in a short turn
- 16:18around and getting that game plan together.
- 16:20He knows what it takes against McDonald and the rest of that
- 16:22crew on the defensive side. They know the game plan that is
- 16:25necessary. Ricky Pearsall is going to try
- 16:28to go. That's going to help out
- 16:29immensely at the wide receivers, but if he can give him something
- 16:32there, you know, the backup tight end, I kind of like him.
- 16:34Yeah, I do too. He's not George Kin.
- 16:36No, I get it. He's.
- 16:36Not, but he's OK. But he's not brutal, right?
- 16:38Yeah, he's OK. Yeah.
- 16:39He's AC plus B minus. He's OK at that spot.
- 16:43Offensive line's gonna be better.
- 16:44He's still got Mcnabry. His name starts with the T.
- 16:47Tonga, Tonga. Tonga Tanjay TONGESI.
- 16:52Think Tanjay Robert. Yeah.
- 16:54RT RT Yeah. I love the 49ers and the spot,
- 16:59Jake. I think they can win this
- 17:01football game. It's not just that they can
- 17:02cover. I think the 49ers can go into
- 17:05Seattle. Really.
- 17:05Do how many plays Brock? Pretty gonna have to make, I
- 17:08think. Because aren't you going to take
- 17:10Christy McCaffrey away? You're going to try if you can,
- 17:13right? What kind of damage has he done
- 17:16in the previous game? Let me let me look this up here
- 17:18real quick. McCaffrey.
- 17:20Against Seattle. Well, he only had eight carries
- 17:22in that Saturday night game, 8 for 23.
- 17:24And in Week 1, he had 69 yards. How many carries did he have in
- 17:27that one? They play.
- 17:28They bookended the schedule Week 1.
- 17:30And 22 carries, 69 yards. Also had 10 targets.
- 17:34How many receptions? 9 catches, 73 yards in that one.
- 17:38Probably a lot of that, right? Lot of swing routes, get them
- 17:41out in space. Use them a myriad of different
- 17:43ways. That is the way.
- 17:44Get the Caffrey going. 49ers can win.
- 17:47Have I? I can't convince you.
- 17:49I get it. I'm not going to.
- 17:51I'm not going to come. Off soon you're digging in your
- 17:52heels. I am, and I'm digging in my
- 17:54heels that I think the Rams are going to beat your Bears.
- 17:57I can't push back much on that. I went back and I looked at the
- 18:00weather in Philadelphia in the divisional round last year when
- 18:05when they gave us, we both, not just us as most believe, we've
- 18:09watched the game, watched last year.
- 18:11Remember the playoffs, the one, the one time that the Eagles
- 18:13were pushed in the playoffs were by the Los Angeles Rams.
- 18:17And it was, it wasn't as cold, but there was snow and there was
- 18:21snow squalls and there was rain and there was mist and there was
- 18:23fog. It was nasty.
- 18:26And that Rams team played in that in a pretty hostile
- 18:30environment in Philadelphia. I don't know.
- 18:35I don't know. What's it take for the bears?
- 18:39Is it? Is it the same blueprint?
- 18:41Yeah, but they can't keep it up. I know.
- 18:43I say it every. Week, right?
- 18:44But if you keep saying it every week and it keeps happening, we
- 18:46said this back in October when they were finding ways to win
- 18:49like, oh, they're doing. This crap, Throw the football on
- 18:52the Rams you can. Caleb needs to be good for four
- 18:56quarters, though. Opening drive last week, that's
- 18:58fine. They took 7 minutes off the
- 18:59clock, almost 8 minutes off the clock, drove down, got a field
- 19:02goal, That's OK. But then after that, they went
- 19:04into a shell again and there was absolutely nothing the rest of
- 19:06the half. They couldn't get anything
- 19:08going. You rely a little bit more on
- 19:10the running game early on. That opening drive was elite.
- 19:13That was excellent. No, it just ended in a field
- 19:15goal. That was a really good one
- 19:16there. But we've seen this too often.
- 19:18I would they, the Bears dig this kind of hole.
- 19:23I don't think there's a comeback against the Rams.
- 19:24Now the Rams had to happen to him last week, looked like they
- 19:27were going to put in cruise control and make their way in
- 19:30and maybe some guys get some early flights back.
- 19:32I mean, that's where we were trying in the first quarter and
- 19:34a half against Carolina, you know, and, and it didn't and
- 19:37they weren't able to put that one away.
- 19:39I don't believe though that the Bears can do.
- 19:40They can't dig A2013 hole against this.
- 19:42Rams, no. And, and the thing that I that I
- 19:44think the Rams have going for him is a thicker kicker.
- 19:46And Brandon McManus was terrible.
- 19:48Yeah. And Mevis has Mevis has been
- 19:50really, he's been really good since he got his opportunity
- 19:54there. It's a coin flip.
- 19:56I these, these games, all of them.
- 19:58I think Denver and the Bills is a coin flip.
- 20:00I think Houston and the Patriots is a coin flip.
- 20:03The one that I think could get away.
- 20:05Trent sees it differently. I I think Seattle's got a
- 20:07legitimate chance to to open to open up a can on these Niners.
- 20:12And I wouldn't say that if if Kittle was able to play because.
- 20:15And Pearsall, how effective is he going to be when he gets back
- 20:18into the lineup? You just, you just you don't
- 20:21know. All right, Tom Keikert is coming
- 20:23up. We'll talk to Tom some Hawkeye
- 20:25related topics with Tom Keikert. Bama, Bob, Trent and I will take
- 20:29a spin around Monday's championship game.
- 20:32Look forward to doing that. Our number 2 Travis Hines on
- 20:35Iowa State and then Mike Palm, we'll head out to Las Vegas.
- 20:39Let's go to Clear Lake. AJ's listening and calling the
- 20:42program. How are you, Sir?
- 20:45Hi gentlemen. I just had a couple quick
- 20:47Nuggets. Kylie Pierbach.
- 20:49I'm a Pierbach and so she is my cousin and we're super proud of
- 20:52her. Her grandpa and my grandpa were
- 20:55brothers. Her grandfather, Orland
- 20:58Pierbach, played on the first ever championship basketball
- 21:02team at Iowa State in the 40s, became a vet and her uncle Al
- 21:07Fierbach was a Olympic shot footer and held the world record
- 21:12for a little while early 70s and won the bronze medal.
- 21:16Pretty good bloodlines there. AJ, what's going on with you?
- 21:19What's? Really.
- 21:19Yeah. I I didn't get any of that
- 21:22athleticism. Her mother is an accomplished
- 21:26pianist and would go into Chicago Trent and play the piano
- 21:31for Virginia Murkowski. There you go.
- 21:35That's. Great.
- 21:35I just thought you'd like those quick Nuggets.
- 21:37Those are awesome. Thanks, AJ.
- 21:39Go Bears. Bear down, you got it.
- 21:41Come baby. Thanks, AJ.
- 21:43Good to hear from you. Speaking of Sunday night, did
- 21:45you see who's singing the national anthem?
- 21:46No, they bring it to half too, You know, That's worth the
- 21:49point. That's worth the point.
- 21:51Jim Cornelius is worth the. Point maybe a good start from.
- 21:53The Bears Why didn't? Did they save him for this game?
- 21:56Maybe I mean, they had to be great.
- 21:59He's so good. He's so good.
- 22:01There was no I'm I'm getting terrible on my on the back of my
- 22:04neck. Stand up just.
- 22:05Thinking from a Canadian. Yes, it's not my anthem, but
- 22:08when he sings it before Blackhawk games and those runs
- 22:11at the the last decade, what did they win, 2012?
- 22:14Thirteen or 10:13 and whatever it was 15.
- 22:17They won three of them. Yeah.
- 22:19Jim Cornell, Listen. Wow.
- 22:21Good stuff. All right, we'll take your time
- 22:22out. Come back we joined by Tom cake
- 22:25hurt Bama Bob this hour as well. Miller in Condon.
- 22:28It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network right?
- 22:311230 Welcome back Miller in Condon in the Iowa Sports Radio
- 22:34Network with you until 2O clock Bama Bob 15 minutes on the
- 22:37national championship right now. Tom Cake hurt hawkeyereport.com
- 22:42Guessing he's looking forward to the transfer port closing up.
- 22:44Although it brings a lot of people to your site.
- 22:46It's great for business Tom, if nothing else.
- 22:48Yes, it certainly keeps you guys on your toes over there, but
- 22:53gets the folks over to your terrific site, hawkeyereport.com
- 22:56part of on three media. Good to talk to you, Tom.
- 22:59Before we get into football, let's just recap last night the
- 23:01women moved to six and O in in big 10 conference play.
- 23:05Terrific start a terrific game out of a couple of a couple of
- 23:09Jensen's gal Stalky was terrific last night and as Trent
- 23:13mentioned, Addie deal, maybe her best game as a Hawkeye so far.
- 23:16How about those, Tom? Yeah, Hannah really looks solid,
- 23:21I thought. And and the big thing was Andy
- 23:25deal and everybody's been waiting for, you know, five star
- 23:29and everything to to kind of have one of those games.
- 23:33And you know, I think most Iowa fans remember last year Ava
- 23:37Haydn, who's arguably, I don't even know if arguably he's been
- 23:40their best player this year, most consistent player, I think
- 23:44would probably be fair. She really struggled last year
- 23:49as a true freshman and then kind of caught fire right around the
- 23:53Big 10 tournament and and then went on to have a couple of, you
- 23:57know, good a good Big 10 tournament and performed on the
- 24:01NCAA. So everybody kind of develops
- 24:05differently. I think everybody was a lot, I
- 24:08shouldn't say everybody. A lot of people were thinking
- 24:09maybe she was going to be like Caitlin and just come in and
- 24:12light the world on fire. And there's different players
- 24:15and she's but, but she's coming along really well and, and I
- 24:21think we'll see more games like that moving forward.
- 24:25This squad feels like they have a lot of upside, very young in a
- 24:29lot of spots. You look kind of at this season,
- 24:33how far can they go? I mean, when you're talking
- 24:34about upside and we know there's an elite level, right?
- 24:36And even if you get a top four seed and you get to host the
- 24:39first couple of rounds, a Sweet 16 match up against the Yukon,
- 24:42against the South Carolina, against the Texas, that that's a
- 24:45different kind of animal. What do you look at upside wise
- 24:47with this women's team? Yeah, I think I think the goal
- 24:52for them should be to be a top 16 seed and be able to host the
- 24:56first two games at Garber Hawkeye.
- 24:59I think if they can do that and then make it to the the Sweet
- 25:0416, then I think that is that would be a really good season
- 25:09for this team, I think and and a good achievement for them.
- 25:13You know, anything beyond that, maybe get into an Elite 8 would
- 25:18be even better. But right now, sitting six and O
- 25:21and arguably the deepest conference in the country is is
- 25:25pretty good. But but they're going to be
- 25:27running the gauntlet here in the next 7-8 games for sure.
- 25:31Let's go over the men, watch them battle Purdue and they did
- 25:36back and forth, everybody making one shot after another.
- 25:39So who was going to blink? Who was going to miss first?
- 25:42It was I when it seemingly I know Purdue was able to build on
- 25:45that and and ultimately hold, but it's a winnable game
- 25:48tomorrow, Tom as the team heads to Bloomington to take on
- 25:51Indiana point spreads about a point and a half Indiana slight
- 25:55favored in this one. This feels like this is a really
- 25:58good opportunity for Iowa to find that quad one that's eluded
- 26:01them. It really does.
- 26:04And and you know, hopefully don't be too bad because you
- 26:07know, it's just like every time, you know, like the UCLA game, it
- 26:10was a quad one until they beat the UCLA and then it wasn't a
- 26:14quad one anymore. But Indiana I think will stay in
- 26:18there obviously as a as a quad one when if it's on, you know,
- 26:22being on the road. The big thing with Indiana is
- 26:25that that Iowa has had to contend with the last two games
- 26:28that Indiana doesn't. They don't have a lot of size.
- 26:32They're kind of like Iowa and, and they've got kind of smaller
- 26:37guards. Tucker Debris is a really good
- 26:40player and he's going to be a handful for them to, to, to
- 26:44guard. I I think Avion Banks probably
- 26:47going to have to end up on Tucker, but they and the
- 26:52Wilkerson kid he's. The only good.
- 26:55He's a good shooter. He's he's streaky though.
- 26:58He'll get going and he can really cook quick, but he can
- 27:02also miss a lot of shots. So that's the but they just
- 27:07don't have any post guys in the last two games.
- 27:09That's really given Iowa. Trouble is those big post
- 27:11players. We wouldn't have to worry about
- 27:13that against the Hoosiers down the stretch.
- 27:16Again, watch the video that you had up at hawkeyereport.com and
- 27:19the McCullum post game press conference.
- 27:21You brought it up again. I think the question was
- 27:24something along the lines of, you know, how do you kind of get
- 27:26these guys over the hump? Basically said maybe teach them
- 27:29to foul less and get fouled more.
- 27:32It's been a week and a half now where he's been talking about
- 27:34it. He's been talking about it
- 27:35enough. What?
- 27:36When does it get to the point of trying to figure out the Big 10
- 27:39to just whine it about it every single time out?
- 27:44Yeah, the the, the, the statistics on the foul shooting
- 27:48in the Big 10 between Iowa and everybody else in Iowa.
- 27:54Iowa's opponents have made more free throws than Iowa has shot
- 27:58in the Big 10. And that's something, you know,
- 28:02that back in the Doctor Tom Davis days, Iowa would always
- 28:05double up their opponents on a just an annual basis.
- 28:09So even even France teams got to the line more than their
- 28:13opponents. And I don't know if it's just
- 28:17lack of respect towards Iowa, towards McCollum.
- 28:22Are they playing a style of basketball that doesn't?
- 28:26It creates following situations. I I don't know, but it's just
- 28:31it, it is weird right now. They went to the line 6 times in
- 28:34that Purdue game and there were two phantom calls, I believe
- 28:39both by the same referee. Who who who the a couple of
- 28:44older players complained about over the years not liking Iowa
- 28:50won't name any names, but but you know, we're Bennett Sturtz
- 28:54got kind of rolled into by Britain Smith and knocked out of
- 28:57bounds and and there's like no call out of bounds.
- 29:01Here you go. And then Cooper cots trying to
- 29:04block out a guy so he couldn't so he couldn't get to the ball,
- 29:07which is completely legal, by the way.
- 29:10And it's not like he threw him or or extended his arm to like
- 29:15Shuck him to the side. He just tried to prevent him
- 29:17from getting to the ball and it's called for a foul and it's
- 29:20just same referee. And it's how how he called that
- 29:24foul, Tom. I mean, it was emphatic going
- 29:26the other way. Yeah, it was.
- 29:30It was weird. It's I don't, I, I, you know, I
- 29:35asked, I asked Ben after the Minneapolis game, the Minnesota
- 29:38game. I just like, hey, do you need to
- 29:40work the refs differently? And he's, he just ran off the
- 29:43all the other stuff. He I, I think he does, I think
- 29:46he needs to just just take one and just to kind of send a
- 29:51message that, hey, you guys aren't going to be able to push
- 29:53me around all season. That's how this is going to
- 29:56work. And my guys are out there
- 29:58playing hard and they're getting fouled.
- 30:00I'll guarantee you Bennett Sturtz is getting fouled a lot
- 30:03coming off the screens and everything else.
- 30:05And this is not getting called. And it's, you know, it's hard to
- 30:11win and it's hard enough to win in the Big 10.
- 30:13But when you're, when you, you're, you've your opponents
- 30:17are, are, are making more free throws than you've been shot,
- 30:21that's a that's a problem. It's hard to win that way.
- 30:23You can't win. Paul Schultz is the guy's name.
- 30:26I'll say it for you, Tom, but we we know who it is.
- 30:29And I believe he grew up a Badger fan, if memory serves.
- 30:31But that aside, yes, that was the guy that and it wasn't just
- 30:35the wider Mccaffrey's that were This also goes back toward, but
- 30:38he hadn't had the same thing to say.
- 30:40And I was also not the only Big 10 program I've seen fan bases
- 30:44that have some questions about Paul.
- 30:45But that aside. So this match up I think is just
- 30:48so intriguing too, because how many fans wanted Darren Devries
- 30:52to be the coach? Looked like maybe for a couple
- 30:54moments he was going to be the Iowa coach went a different
- 30:57direction. There's plenty of Indiana fans
- 30:59that would have preferred McCollum and I've seen plenty of
- 31:01Adam Pigs in the Indiana message boards going back to April.
- 31:04So this is kind of going to be a weird one too.
- 31:07And you just wonder if I would does find a way to go in their
- 31:10hand, Indiana, their third straight loss.
- 31:12What things are going to be from the Hoosier perspective if
- 31:15McCollum and year number one walks in there and gets a
- 31:17victory? Yeah, by the way, Ben McCollum,
- 31:20first time he's lost three games in a row since 2013.
- 31:24February of 2013, he lost twice to Fort Hayes State.
- 31:28I have to look it up because I was curious.
- 31:31Lost by two points and then one point to Fort Fort Hayes State
- 31:33in between their loss to Washburn.
- 31:36And that was that was this three-game losing streak.
- 31:38He doesn't remember it. I asked him today about it and
- 31:42he does not remember it. But yeah, this is just, this is
- 31:46a huge game for both teams because Iowa lost three in a row
- 31:49and they're spiraling. And I think if Indiana wants to
- 31:53make the NCAA Tournament, they need to win like this.
- 31:57And after, especially after blowing that Nebraska game, I
- 32:00couldn't believe that I I kind of walked away from that
- 32:03Nebraska game because if Indiana was up by like 11 and it was in
- 32:08the second-half and I was like, I got some stuff to do, I'll
- 32:10just, And then I little later I'm like, what in the world
- 32:13happened? Got beat by almost double
- 32:15figures. I don't understand what
- 32:17happened, what happened here. And but yeah, they're they're
- 32:21just, I don't know that they're very good.
- 32:23They just don't have the amount of talent.
- 32:27I wonder how how many Indiana fans are going to be there are
- 32:29all of the Indiana fans in my. Great point, never thought of
- 32:34that. You're yes.
- 32:35Free free tickets for friends and family for people that are
- 32:38all going to be. Or there'll be people there that
- 32:40normally wouldn't have the opportunity to go.
- 32:42That's a good. Point and yeah, to answer your
- 32:44question, what happened both a 13 nothing run and a 16 to one
- 32:47run out of the Huskers during the second-half.
- 32:50Yeah, that's how you come back down like they were what was it
- 32:53by 16? I think at 1.2 runs in the
- 32:55second-half like that. Hey Tom, football question for
- 32:58you. Iowa portal closing today.
- 33:00That just means that guys can still make it done.
- 33:03They're still doing a little bit of work.
- 33:05Any names, any position groups that they're still trying to
- 33:08figure out and no punter hasn't been announced yet.
- 33:10Feels like they have a pretty good angle on that is a
- 33:12defensive tackle they're still searching for.
- 33:14Yeah, that kid from that that committed to that, committed to
- 33:20UConn, that actually was Bryce Hawthorne's high school
- 33:24teammate, which is kind of crazy.
- 33:27It's a good defensive. Line together, yeah, defensive
- 33:30lineman from is that North Dakota Emmanuel Ojibade.
- 33:35I think it's how you say his last name and he is he's on
- 33:40campus. I think he's going to pretty
- 33:42sure he's going to commit and then they've got that Lance
- 33:46Sheedy. I think it is the other kid, the
- 33:49wide receiver from they'd be a preferred walk on from SMU that
- 33:52it was a walk on there. So walk on wide receiver would
- 33:57would have an opportunity and you know how they do the walk
- 33:59ONS now for a lot of the when they call them preferred walk
- 34:02ONS, that just means that the school's going to pay for your
- 34:05tuition. That's what it means.
- 34:07Not these days is we'll we'll take care of your bills, but you
- 34:12don't get like extra money. We're just going to take care of
- 34:15everything for you. It's essentially almost like
- 34:17scholarship. Yeah, Tom, right of time,
- 34:21brother. Thanks for doing this.
- 34:22Appreciate it. I will talk to you next Friday.
- 34:25Trent's off. I will reach out.

- 35:01Tuesday at 7:30. BAMMA Bob Next Miller and Condon
- 35:05on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:09Hi, I'm Marie Cong and welcome back.
- 35:11Final segment of the first hour of our program.
- 35:13Let's get right to Bama Bob Couple of minutes late, but only
- 35:17one game to Opine as we're all off on Monday.
- 35:19So we'll take a look at the championship game here and do so
- 35:22right now with our guy Bama Bob, who joins us every Friday during
- 35:26the college football season. Bama Trenton can as always.
- 35:30Well, let's turn it over to you. Make a case that we're deep in
- 35:33the fourth quarter and this game could go either way.
- 35:37Is that too big of a? Is that too big of an ask?
- 35:40Well, you would think not with Miami playing at home.
- 35:44But I mean, Indiana has just spoiled me every time I try to,
- 35:50you know, find a crack in them, right?
- 35:52I mean, they've just, they've just run roughshod, especially
- 35:55the last few weeks. I didn't know if they could do
- 35:57this, you know, beating Ohio State in the Big 10 championship
- 36:01game. Now they've just they've just
- 36:03run over Alabama and Oregon and those are those are good teams.
- 36:07OK, This is not this is the three the best three-game week
- 36:10or three-game stretch they've had.
- 36:12But I think it's just going to come down to in can Miami with
- 36:18that great defensive line affect Mendoza?
- 36:24Can they get him off the spot? Can they hit him?
- 36:27Can they make him uncomfortable? Because nobody's been able to do
- 36:30that yet. And anytime somebody's tried,
- 36:33you know, maybe it's for one down or whatever, maybe even a
- 36:36series. And then they, they adjust and
- 36:38they come back. But I think that's the big
- 36:40thing. And then just a physicality.
- 36:43I think Indiana is the most physical team.
- 36:46I don't think I know they are that I've seen all season.
- 36:49And that's really on both sides of the line of scrimmage,
- 36:52offensive line, defensive line. They can cover.
- 36:55They'll hit. They're fast, they're big.
- 36:58You know, you think of athletes, right?
- 37:00I think 510 years ago, who would have thought Indiana would have
- 37:04the better athletes? Maybe over Miami, But buddy,
- 37:08yeah, over anybody, right? If even if they're not better,
- 37:13they're they're they're certainly on the part.
- 37:15And I think the line reflects that.
- 37:17You guys would know this better than me.
- 37:19Has there ever been a championship game with 8 1/2
- 37:21point spread? I mean, that's what I'm looking
- 37:24at now. They just opened it over a
- 37:26touchdown and it's gone up a point from what I'm just what
- 37:29I'm looking at. I can't remember a championship
- 37:31game. Usually it's within a field
- 37:32goal, you know, maybe 3 1/2, something like that.
- 37:35But this is this again, with Miami playing at home.
- 37:37I think there's going to be a lot of Indiana fans.
- 37:40Yeah, there are. They're trying to get there.
- 37:43Yeah, yeah, exactly. You know, some they'll, they'll
- 37:47do whatever they have to do, I think to get there.
- 37:50I can make a case for it. But it's all going to really
- 37:52start, I think, up front and can they make Mendoza?
- 37:55Can they force him into a couple of turnovers that he hasn't had
- 37:59so far? Can they make him uncomfortable?
- 38:02Can they can they rattle him? You know, if they hit him a
- 38:04couple times early, is he going to get happy feet and that type
- 38:07of thing? But but other than that, I just
- 38:09don't know. I think Miami is going to put up
- 38:10some points, but I don't know how they're going to stop
- 38:15Indiana unless Indiana helps them.
- 38:17Maybe you got to go all the way back to last year, the last time
- 38:20we saw a point spread this what was Ohio State was favored by 8
- 38:231/2 against Notre. Dame Same deals last year.
- 38:25Wow, really? Oh, I didn't.
- 38:26I wouldn't have thought that. I thought that would have been,
- 38:28you know, under a touchdown, but.
- 38:31Michigan was five and a half. Oh, Georgia against TCU was 13
- 38:351/2. So they have that big recently.
- 38:37Yeah, Georgia, TCU, that makes sense.
- 38:39I forgot about that one. That one certainly makes sense,
- 38:41and that one lived up to it. Yeah, what about Malachi, Tony?
- 38:46How big of a factor can he be, Trent?
- 38:48Not like special teams minds, just the whole thing.
- 38:52You know, I I think it's maybe something like that.
- 38:54You know, something has to pop and gadget play special teams,
- 38:57something like that, just strictly as a receiver idioms
- 39:00just so good at finding there's a match up.
- 39:03All right, they have an opinion chair.
- 39:04We're going to take that away. So I don't think him as a
- 39:06receiver is going to be maybe one big one, but I I would that
- 39:10would be the angle that I'd look at as a gadget play doing
- 39:12something like that. I would have mentioned something
- 39:15though, with Mendoza. We saw two games here, Bama,
- 39:19where Mendoza wasn't at this best one was in Iowa City.
- 39:24And after they got a interception on the first play
- 39:26of the game, got a touchdown right after that.
- 39:28He wasn't very good. He did not play well at Kiddick
- 39:30Stadium. Then the Penn State game, and
- 39:34there was one thing that both Iowa and Penn State did
- 39:36defensively. They blitzed the crap out of
- 39:38them. Phil Parker dialed up more
- 39:40pressure than I have ever seen Phil Parker in a game plan.
- 39:44Miami, your ears back, you got a great defensive line, but it's
- 39:48not just that, you know, those young linebackers, they have
- 39:50concerns with those young safeties, You know, what can
- 39:53they hold up? Well, here's the thing, you're
- 39:55going one-on-one and for the Miami guys, I kind of like that.
- 39:57I think that's got to be the game playing here.
- 39:59We're not going to sit back and just hope that our defensive
- 40:02line is going to get there. We're going to apply pressure
- 40:04all throughout the game because I think that's the only hope
- 40:06against Indiana and. We got like a minute left, so go
- 40:09ahead. Right.
- 40:10Yeah, However they do it, you know, whether it's, do you think
- 40:12they would start with, you know, with Bane and and those guys up
- 40:15front? But yeah, you're right.
- 40:17It's the same philosophy. Just how are you going to do it?
- 40:19How are you, how are you going to get him off the spot, make
- 40:22him uncomfortable? And if you have to bring
- 40:23pressure, obviously you're opening yourself up more.
- 40:26I don't know, they'll start with pressure.
- 40:27Maybe they will. Maybe they'll look at the Iowa
- 40:28film and go, you know what, you know, to heck with it.
- 40:31We're just we're just going to go from the get go and make him
- 40:33uncomfortable. That leaves you open as, you
- 40:35know, in the back end. And I think they've got to keep
- 40:38it close because you do not want to be playing catch up in this
- 40:41situation. So whatever you've got to do to
- 40:44try to keep it close. That's what you do on Tony.
- 40:46I think it, I think I think what Trent is saying they're either
- 40:50special teams or you know, slip screen or something where he
- 40:53busts 1506070 yards, something like that.
- 40:56But I don't see him as a, you know, catching 10 passes for 140
- 41:00yards or something like that. He's just not doesn't seem that
- 41:02type of receiver yet. He may get there, but he's a
- 41:05weapon and any of us going to be aware of him, like you said,
- 41:08they're they're going to scheme it up.
- 41:09They're going to try to take away any advantage that Miami
- 41:11has, but it's tough to make a case against Indiana.
- 41:16But we've been surprised before over the years, you know, Penn
- 41:19State and the Fiesta Bowl and go going down the line, so it'll be
- 41:22fun to watch. And we'll talk about a Tuesday
- 41:24morning. Just you and I Trent's on
- 41:26vacation next week. Bam.
- 41:27I'll talk to you over the weekend.
- 41:28Thank you bud all. Right.
- 41:29Take care guys. Thanks.
