Transcript
- 0:08All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon,

- 0:16it until 2:00 here this afternoon.
- 0:18That time we'll turn things over the drive to drive 2 to 5.
- 0:21Heather and Lucas take you home overtime, Iowa.
- 0:23After that, five until 6. Trenton, I've got this lined up
- 0:28throughout our program. At the bottom of our number one
- 0:31till 12:30. We will talk to Alec Bussey
- 0:33Cyclone News I will get the latest on what's going on at
- 0:37Iowa State will pick his brain on college football from Big 12
- 0:40perspective as I get the sense that the war drums are sounding
- 0:44more about that coming up here in the next few minutes.
- 0:48In the second hour of the show, Matt Snyder CBSSports.com will
- 0:52join us is our in our his normal spot.
- 0:55We begin our week, our second hour, with a baseball
- 0:58conversation with our friend Matt Snyder from CBSSports.com
- 1:03and then Scott Dockerman from The Athletic.
- 1:06And Doc will be all over this these meetings going on in
- 1:08Destin as well as he wrote a piece today speculating the
- 1:12first three weeks of the television schedule when it
- 1:14comes to college football. I like that article better
- 1:17because that's a fun article as opposed to what we're reading
- 1:19about the SEC and the Big 10 getting set to flex their
- 1:23muscles. So we'll get into that.
- 1:25Caitlin Clark is going to miss some time.
- 1:27We'll talk about that for a couple of moments.
- 1:29What that means is the CBS has scheduled a nationally televised
- 1:33game a week from Saturday night and she will not participate.
- 1:37Some of those folks that believe it's about the league and not
- 1:40about her. Here's your opportunity to prove
- 1:42us wrong and you and I don't think that is going to happen
- 1:46anyways. TC good to see you good long
- 1:48weekend. How are you I'm.
- 1:49Doing well yeah back at it and are rolling into a new week
- 1:52excited to talk a little sports not so excited to talk about
- 1:55those Timberwolves last night they won every.
- 1:58Category on the scores you accept the one that matters.
- 2:01And the better team still won. They had an answer every single
- 2:04time. And I was more impressed walking
- 2:07away from that than anything. But a lot going on.
- 2:10Of course, baseball we kind of hit at that first checkpoint.
- 2:12We'll be digging into that a little bit.
- 2:14How about? Scuba the other day.
- 2:15Yes, my gosh. And that Tigers team, the way
- 2:18that they have figured it out and pulling Baez off the scrap
- 2:21heap and turn him into the center fielder that he has and
- 2:23it's just not that. He got tossed.
- 2:25Was it yesterday or the day before he got tossed.
- 2:28It was a bad strike three call being missed by 6 inches, maybe
- 2:31more than that and he was just at the end of his rope.
- 2:34Can't wait till the robo up. Screw it up and you'll be
- 2:36yelling about them maybe. Maybe I will.
- 2:39Yes you will. That would That was an egregious
- 2:41one, but he got his money's worth on his way out anyways.
- 2:45And football. Can you hear it?
- 2:47Yeah, it's getting close, isn't it?
- 2:49Well, I was working through a few things last week and I put
- 2:53together my preliminary high school schedule.
- 2:55Oh, you did. Or 2025, Yeah.
- 2:57So that that made it. Feel.
- 2:59Where are you going to be opening week?
- 3:01Ankeny, Ankeny. That's not Week 10.
- 3:04It's not, no. And that was something that was
- 3:07different this year, I believe. Let me pull it up here.
- 3:10And when's Valley Dowling? That is not week Week 1.
- 3:14It is. So Ankeny and Centennial, I want
- 3:17to say play like Week 4, something like that.
- 3:21Waukee against Waukee. Northwest is also later in the
- 3:23season. So moving them around a little
- 3:26bit with the new districts and the new look at things, which is
- 3:28OK. Yeah, I'm with you.
- 3:29I'm with you. You know, for a long time we
- 3:30had, it was Week 2 where we had all these rivalry games.
- 3:34Well, I can only be at one place now.
- 3:36It's great for football. Friday night here on KX and O
- 3:38that that was a great thing. But yeah, trying to be a bunch
- 3:41of different places, a little bit difficult when you're doing
- 3:43play by play. But yeah, we're starting to to
- 3:45feel it a little bit. Magazines are out.
- 3:48Athlon comes out with their fun article every year.
- 3:50The coach is talking about the other coaches and he tried to
- 3:53figure out where it comes from. And then we realized, well, it's
- 3:55not head coaches, right? These are assistant coaches and
- 3:59how much? What's the?
- 4:00Word. Put your name to it.
- 4:02Nobody's going to. I understand, but then I
- 4:04understand. I'm just not as excited to click
- 4:07on it if it's just anonymous. But you're right.
- 4:09Nobody's going to do it. That's.
- 4:11True, I understand, but it's just I guess it whets the
- 4:13appetite will be to teach their own.
- 4:16I like Doc's piece today in the In the Athletic where he
- 4:19speculated the TV assignment. Something that's not true,
- 4:22that's not true, it's not real. Right.
- 4:24But it's teach their own, right? It's something.
- 4:27It is, it is something. So let's get what I think I
- 4:29think is the biggest story currently going on and that's
- 4:33Greg Sankey and the SEC are starting to, and I really do, I
- 4:37believe they're pounding the war Trump's.
- 4:38We are getting close to, I don't want to say Armageddon because I
- 4:43believe that the SEC in the Big 10 to an extent need the ACC in
- 4:47the Big 12. They need the power for us, I
- 4:49believe. That why?
- 4:51Because they're going to need more inventory.
- 4:55I think you're just not going to want to play those two
- 4:58conferences. Now, I'll say this about those
- 5:01two conferences that I think that they need, to an extent, go
- 5:07sit in the corner, speak when spoken to.
- 5:11We're going to decide like it or leave it.
- 5:13And that's the way it's going to be.
- 5:15And that's the way it seems like Sankey is saying.
- 5:17Because I don't think that I hate when the government gets
- 5:21involved and this is just fresh take, but I don't I, I think
- 5:27that there will be some insertion of some of some
- 5:31political persuasion that that does not let it totally come
- 5:36apart that the ACC and the Big 12 will survive for the time
- 5:42being in a limited role. But then when we get to a point
- 5:47where Florida State can leave and.
- 5:50Maybe. Clemson can leave and it's not
- 5:54such a punitive punishment to leave.
- 5:56Now, whether that's 2030, then I think all bets are off.
- 6:02But I think for the time being, it's going to be Sankey and it
- 6:06it's going to be the Big 10. And they're going to say here's
- 6:09the way it's going, here's what we're going to get and we'd like
- 6:13you to come along, but here's what we're going to give you.
- 6:16Like you're leaving. I like this part of it from Greg
- 6:20Sankey because we continue to hear this rallying cry, right?
- 6:25Well, what's what about the good of the game?
- 6:26You hear from ACC people, we hear from Big 12 people, the
- 6:30good of the game. Greg Sankey's done a lot for the
- 6:33good of the game. Greg Sankey has done things they
- 6:36didn't need to do. Including expand for four teams.
- 6:39Going from 4:00 to 12:00, that is not something in the grand
- 6:42scheme of things that actually worked out for them with the
- 6:44conference champions getting the automatic bid one for the Group
- 6:47of five, that is something that did not suddenly change the lot
- 6:50in life for the SEC. In fact, maybe it made it worse
- 6:52for them. Then you look at the 16 team
- 6:54model and it's the same kind of thing.
- 6:56All right, We're getting 4 automatic bids.
- 6:57If you just went at large with 16, we have 7 teams, 8 teams, a
- 7:02lot of years, maybe even more than that.
- 7:04If you just went strictly without any automatic bids, just
- 7:07take the top 16 teams. So I can understand from his
- 7:10perspective enough. You want to put out press
- 7:13releases, You want to talk behind our back, You want to
- 7:15speak to these hushed tones about the good of the game.
- 7:18This is good again. And they don't need you in the
- 7:21grand scheme of things. They don't need the ACC with
- 7:25their veiled attempts in the Big 12.
- 7:26They just don't. And we can hate it and we do,
- 7:28obviously from our perspective in the state native Iowa, but
- 7:31that is the reality it. Is you're 100%?
- 7:33Right, they can go off and do their own thing.
- 7:36Take the Big 10 with them and they will be completely fine.
- 7:39As it pertains to football, other sports, well, we know
- 7:42other sports outside of men's basketball doesn't make money.
- 7:46Iowa women's basketball sold out their building for a full
- 7:49season. 2 Didn't they? And lost money.
- 7:52They lost money in a year where they sold every ticket
- 7:55available. That shows you what makes money.
- 7:58It's football. That's all this conversation is.
- 8:00Wine, complain, bitch about it, but this is the reality.
- 8:03And if the SEC and Greg Seinke want to take their ball and go,
- 8:06they absolutely. Can and the Big 10 will join
- 8:08them absolutely, you know, and they should look at the
- 8:10difference in the in the revenue at this point.
- 8:14It's just going to get, it's just going to, the gap is just
- 8:16going to widen in the years to come.
- 8:19So look, and you're 100% right and you're a big 10 fan, you're
- 8:24for school in the big 10, but you hate it because of the fact
- 8:27where we live, it's not good for the sport.
- 8:29It's not. But this is the way it's going.
- 8:32And I, I mean, I just hate I, I don't want to wish my life away,
- 8:37but I kind of want to, you know, Fast forward in 5-6 years.
- 8:39What, where's it at? What's called the sports look
- 8:41like, you know, oh, it's bananas.
- 8:44It truly is. Consolidation is not a great
- 8:46thing for anybody. No, it's not what you want to
- 8:49see, but it is the reality of the situation.
- 8:52Look at. The packed wolf ask them how
- 8:53they like. It yes.
- 8:55And there's a great example of the changing environment that is
- 8:58upon us. And if you're the ACC and the
- 9:00Big 12 and you got this from Sankey, is it time to back down
- 9:04now? Yes, say yes, you're right.
- 9:07We'll take our two and we're going to shut up about it.
- 9:10Absolutely, because this is good.
- 9:12Is that 2 only? That's the other part.
- 9:14You could still get a 13, even a fourteen in a year.
- 9:17Those things still can happen with three at larges that are
- 9:20still out there after all the bids are handed out, there's
- 9:22still 3 opportunities to get in there.
- 9:25There's a chance for three, even four teams to get in from the
- 9:27Big 12 from the ACC. Notre Dame has a bunch of of
- 9:30down years. Yes, absolutely.
- 9:31There's another spot that opens up.
- 9:33Those are things that obviously in the grand scheme of things,
- 9:36you look at that and say, all right, this is going to be OK.
- 9:39You have that gap. You can try to do whatever it
- 9:42is, but it is so significant with the SEC, the Big 10 and
- 9:46everybody else. You just have to find a way to
- 9:48be able to compete in your league because bids are still
- 9:50available in your league. 100 percent, 100%.
- 9:53Do you know what? Your mark, you got a pretty good
- 9:55basketball conference. Maybe that's something?
- 9:57Continue to lean into that. Absolutely.
- 9:59And he's been that's been kind of his rallying cry since he got
- 10:02the job that he thinks that they're leaving money on the
- 10:04table. The Big 12 is by not packaging
- 10:08their conference, their college basketball, men's college
- 10:11basketball separately. So anyways, we'll watch it.
- 10:13It's a big story. Sankey continues.
- 10:15And I know he's not thought of very glowing terms by fans of,
- 10:20you know, teams in those two conferences.
- 10:23But at at this point, you're almost you're almost forced to
- 10:25open up and swallow hard because that's what you're going to get.
- 10:28Take it or leave it. Like, like it or lump it.
- 10:30So we'll see where it goes. Anyways, basketball from over
- 10:33the weekend, it was really good. It really was.
- 10:38I think the these conference finals have been I, I think
- 10:41pretty entertaining. Indiana had a hugely just gave
- 10:45that away. Credit to the Knicks.
- 10:47Credit to the Knicks for making this a series.
- 10:50I hope the T Wolves can win tomorrow night.
- 10:52Do I expect them to? Not really.
- 10:54I don't. It does bother me.
- 10:57And then we, this has kind of been a theme of our show the
- 11:00last few weeks. The SGA, yeah, you know, the,
- 11:03the, the everybody else on the floor is just kicking the ever
- 11:06loving crap out of each other. But if you kind of brush up
- 11:10against SGA when there goes the whistle and he's marching to the
- 11:14free throw and he's a hell of a player.
- 11:15Yeah, he's a. Great player, hell of a player.
- 11:17But he's a Canadian cheater. I thought you Canadians were
- 11:20above this. Can you talk to your?
- 11:22Canadians a lot to claim them. It drives me nuts.
- 11:26They're with you, you know he doesn't have to.
- 11:28Do this I I understand this is part of the fan perspective and
- 11:31and that's I know a piece of it when I just get it's irritating
- 11:35to watch so many different parts of it yes, my fandom is a part
- 11:39of it and I get that, but taking that away, we were talking about
- 11:42this last series We were talking about this the series before
- 11:45against the Nuggets that's. And probably would have all
- 11:47season long if we watched the Thunder.
- 11:49Absolutely. He is such a talented player.
- 11:51He can get to a spot whenever he wants.
- 11:53He can get to the rim. He's not a great shooter.
- 11:56But then you couple it with an 85% free throw shooter and you
- 11:58get that and you get so many calls and.
- 12:00So many times Williams. He just falls over and there's
- 12:04the whistle. But you said, I think the most
- 12:06pertinent point about this, that game last night was physical.
- 12:12Everywhere except for him. Except for him.
- 12:14Yep, Chad Holm can get in the crap beat of it.
- 12:16Williams. These are two good players.
- 12:18You know what? It's kind of been exposed and I
- 12:20hate it because I really like the guy and I want him to be the
- 12:22face of the NBA because I like Ant a lot.
- 12:27The face of the league doesn't take two shots in the first
- 12:28half. Two shots. 13 in a game that you
- 12:31have to win at home. Right to even it up.
- 12:34I know that they were incredibly physical with.
- 12:36The defense was unbelievable. And that's this Thunder team.
- 12:39That was the calling cord coming in.
- 12:41I mean, Lou Dort is as good an on ball defender as you're going
- 12:44to find in the league. We talked about Caruso, what he
- 12:46is, and then just the mob of guys that they bring in.
- 12:49Ken Rich Williams, Remember him from TCU?
- 12:51No, I don't. I mean, I know he went there,
- 12:53but I don't remember much about him.
- 12:54I mean. Long arms.
- 12:55It just they got so many of these guys that just throw
- 12:58Wallace. They're probably going to trade
- 12:59Lou Dort and then Wallace is going to come in.
- 13:01He's going to be that guy next year.
- 13:03This team is incredibly deep, physical and when they're
- 13:05allowed to play that way, it's not going to get shots.
- 13:10Sure seems like they're destined that there's going to be a
- 13:11parade. Yeah, it sure seems like it.
- 13:14Updated numbers I saw this morning take a stab them to win
- 13:17the NBA Finals. Oh, there, how much money did
- 13:19you have to lay? You got to lay. 280.
- 13:22More. Really. 360 more?
- 13:27Wow. 4 to 1 is what I saw this morning -400 currently at circa
- 13:33-460 Holy geez is the number you could get the next at 12 to one,
- 13:39Pacers plus 640 and the Timberwolves 40 to 1.
- 13:44Now, that 40 to 1 number is better than another shop that I
- 13:46saw that was 25 to 1. Because you look at this is the
- 13:50math we talked about from time to time for people that are new.
- 13:53We talked about rolling over bets.
- 13:55This would be you take the Timberwolves, they have to win
- 13:57three in a row. So this is very simple.
- 13:59So say you're a $20 player, you put 20 bucks down on it.
- 14:02You're going to put 20 bucks on them at 25 to 1 to win the whole
- 14:04thing. Let's just take a flyer or you
- 14:07take that $25, you get them in game five at 3:00 to 1:00.
- 14:11Then you take those winnings along with your initial $20 you
- 14:14rolled over in game six. You do the same thing in Game 7
- 14:17and then you can just take a serious price with all that
- 14:18money you've built. You're going to get paid a lot
- 14:20more than 25 to 1 if you do it in that fashion.
- 14:23That's the way that. You roll 40 to one, but 25 to 1
- 14:26you would. Yeah, Look, I don't give them
- 14:30much of a chance. I don't.
- 14:31I think they've probably played the last game in the Twin Cities
- 14:34this year. It sure seems like that the fans
- 14:36will be going crazy at OK at at where do they play?
- 14:40What's the name of the building in Oklahoma State, do you know?
- 14:42The old corral. The old corral.
- 14:44The old corral it is. The the Thunder shoot.
- 14:49The Thunderdome. Thunderdome.
- 14:51There you go. Whatever it's called.
- 14:52What I just I'm going. To guess it's named after a
- 14:54company. You think now I get a kick every
- 14:57time there was jerseys. I I like the color scheme.
- 14:59I like the blue and the orange. I do too, but that stupid Lowe's
- 15:03logo on there. Lowe's the truck stop or loves,
- 15:07Loves. That's what it loves.
- 15:08It's the truck stop there's. One in Altoona.
- 15:10Loves. Yes there is.
- 15:12It just looks so odd with that colour combination of that
- 15:14bright whatever colour that it is that they play.
- 15:17I'm trying to figure. Out who's got?
- 15:18The Paycom Centre. That's what it's called.
- 15:20Who's got milk on their jerseys that's still alive?
- 15:24There's a team still playing that has milk.
- 15:27Milk. Yeah, I can see the I can.
- 15:33It's just the word milk. Somebody's got milk.
- 15:35Somebody's got. Milk still alive.
- 15:37Still alive. NBANHL Team.
- 15:39I'm not seeing any milk that it went.
- 15:41No, no, no, no. There's one out there.
- 15:42OK, There's one out there. Please be on out there.
- 15:46Is it it's going to be something that smoke goes to milk?
- 15:48Is it like got milk like the old milk milk?
- 15:53Is is it the Lakers? They're not alive.
- 15:56They're not alive. Anyway, I don't know what it is.
- 15:58Help us out it tweet us what's what's our at Miller and Condon.
- 16:04Somebody'd got milk. No, not a big deal.
- 16:07The other series tonight, the Knicks, as we mentioned, that
- 16:10was a huge comeback for the Knicks as they fell behind 20.
- 16:13It looked like it was over that they were going to get swept.
- 16:18But to their credit, to the to the Knicks credit and to one
- 16:22player in particular, too much cat, too much Karl Anthony
- 16:25Towns. My God, he was good down the
- 16:27stretch. Karl Anthony Towns just would
- 16:29not not let that team. I know it's cliche, but it's
- 16:31true in this case that whether he was rebounding the ball,
- 16:35whether he was scoring the ball, he was, he was the best player
- 16:38on the floor at the end, at the end to to prevail that game, to
- 16:42make this at least a series game 4 tonight in Indianapolis.
- 16:47Let's get Joe in here. He is the Thunder fan.
- 16:49Good to hear from you, Joe. You're on your way.
- 16:51You're up three one and seemingly headed to a parade.
- 16:55How are you? Well, we've been up three one in
- 16:58this position before, so let's not talk about it yet.
- 17:02Against the Warriors. Yeah, against the Warriors,
- 17:05yeah, they're that those of their 74 win season, whatever it
- 17:08was. But First off, the funniest is
- 17:11Lakers is wish their advertisement is.
- 17:13Wish, wish. OK.
- 17:14All right. You know the old joke got it
- 17:17off, wish I'm not. Honestly, last night's game from
- 17:20top to bottom is probably the best game of the series.
- 17:24I mean, yeah, you can't touch glass, man.
- 17:26I get it. And you know, you talk about Lou
- 17:29Dort. Lou Dort was undrafted and we
- 17:31got to do something. We've got six first round draft
- 17:34picks coming up from the STA trade.
- 17:37So I don't The thing is like, I don't know what this team needs
- 17:40to do or what they. Need to do.
- 17:43I think they'll make trades just to make trades.
- 17:46I mean, I hated to see. I hated to see him trade.
- 17:47Giddy got Caruso. Caruso.
- 17:49Was was a. Part of the Thunder organization
- 17:52and you know, you talk about an Ant, Ants great, but he's got to
- 17:56get off the snide a lot earlier than one minute. 11 first, I
- 18:01mean this team like they split this, they split this season.
- 18:04Now granted, either team was at full health when they split.
- 18:07Right. But something's got to
- 18:09something's got to help Minnesota out, and it's got to
- 18:12start with him. You got to get a bucket before
- 18:14one minute left in the first. Yeah, you're 1000% right Joe.
- 18:18Congrats to your squad being up long.
- 18:20Lots to do, lots to play for yet.
- 18:22But I got a feeling we'll be hearing a lot more from you Joe.
- 18:25Your team seems to be destined. Don't jinx again you.
- 18:27Know congratulations, Joe. See you, Joe Champions.
- 18:31Good to hear from you, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
- 18:34Thank you to Drew and to Benny. OK, so I was looking at NBA
- 18:37ones. No, it's the Toronto Maple.
- 18:39Leafs. But I got the list here of
- 18:40current jersey sponsors for the whole NBA and I'm like oh man,
- 18:43no, no. Did the old man have another
- 18:45one? No, no, no.
- 18:46No, it's it's the Toronto. It's the Toronto Maple.
- 18:48Yeah. So now that.
- 18:49It's when they're wearing their way, it's in blue.
- 18:51When it's the blue home sweaters, it's in white.
- 18:53It's the Toronto Maple Leafs. Good, good.
- 18:55Yeah, good. Because I didn't want the old
- 18:57man to be having a spell. But.
- 19:00But anyways, when it comes to the NHL, well, well done.
- 19:04Hurricanes, I guess, avoided the sweep there.
- 19:07You're not going to get past Florida.
- 19:09Florida's going to represent the East and probably clinch that
- 19:12thing. Who knows, maybe as early as
- 19:14tomorrow. I hope it's not not the case
- 19:16because then it would be I think it's 9 if they if the series
- 19:20ends tomorrow. Florida has nine days off.
- 19:23'Cause they, they've locked it in.
- 19:25They've locked it in, yeah. They've locked it in.
- 19:27Is that a bad thing in hockey? Yes, it depends on who you ask.
- 19:35It's good that you can get maybe some of your guys back.
- 19:39That would be obviously a positive.
- 19:42If you're playing well. Do you want to, do you want to
- 19:44take a you want to go on a break at that point?
- 19:46Probably not, I wouldn't think. It depends on who you ask.
- 19:51All right, let's get one more call in here then.
- 19:53I want to talk about Caitlin Clark for a moment.
- 19:56Jack is with Miller and Condon. Hi, Jack.
- 20:00Hey boys, how are you? Hey, listen, if you don't like
- 20:03SGA, you couldn't have liked James Harden either.
- 20:06I hated him. That's what he played like,
- 20:08yeah. Oh, it's just God awful watching
- 20:11guys. I mean, I, I'm sure him for the
- 20:13Wolves, but I probably got to side with you, Kenny.
- 20:18They ain't going to play too many more games up there in
- 20:20Minneapolis. Hate to say, Jack, Hey guys,
- 20:22keep. Keep up the good work.
- 20:23You're the only reason why I'm still listening boys.
- 20:25Have a great week. Thank you.
- 20:27Jack, appreciate you listening. Yeah, I mean, it's, it's not fun
- 20:31to watch. And he's a phenomenal player and
- 20:33he's on a phenomenal team. They're great.
- 20:34Yep. It's a great team, but Ant you
- 20:36need to get. You need to insert yourself and
- 20:40take over these games the final. Play the official.
- 20:46The officials put .3 on the clock.
- 20:48Yep. OK, you can get a shot off.
- 20:50Right. Yep, just.
- 20:51Just. But I mean, it's got to be a
- 20:53flick. Of risk, right, Right.
- 20:55Why wasn't a .6? I don't know.
- 20:58It was out of bounds that fan grabbed the ball.
- 21:01I don't know what the official rule is, but how did it come up
- 21:03with .3? Either?
- 21:05Your timing was correct and it should have been .1.
- 21:07That's what it was at first. And Chris Finch, I, I don't
- 21:13understand the play call there. Well, I don't understand why
- 21:15he's not playing Terence Shannon.
- 21:17Until what game? Till they got back to the Twin
- 21:19Cities, he's been good. I She was three there for the
- 21:24win and that lob it up to they got big guys too and he saw
- 21:29underneath. They're trying to just clear out
- 21:30space for Rudy to go up and tap it in.
- 21:33If there was .1, well, that's your only recourse.
- 21:35You have to do that. You have to do it.
- 21:36But there was .3 you can technically get a shot off and
- 21:40he got a pretty group of pretty good shooters.
- 21:43Well. Yeah, I mean, David Chancel was
- 21:45on fire from behind the arc last.
- 21:46Night. Well, and that's to me, this
- 21:49showed so much about the Thunder, the response every
- 21:52single time, because every time, Trent, there were those moments
- 21:54where they're. Going to get this and then it's
- 21:56back to seven and then it's down to 2 and it's back to five.
- 21:59But you have a game where you mentioned D Vincenzo outstanding
- 22:02Alexander Walker. Terrific.
- 22:04Nazreed and as he mentioned, Terry.
- 22:07Julius Randall, feel free to show up.
- 22:09Mcdaniel's had 22. You get that kind of performance
- 22:12with met many guys and you can't win at home, right?
- 22:15It's over. Randall and Edwards, what did
- 22:17they have in the 1st 24 minutes? Not much, not much.
- 22:22I mean, and I think it was one for two.
- 22:24Maybe they had five points. Just you need more.
- 22:27These are your guys are real quick on the Caitlin Clark
- 22:29thing. You know what, I feel bad for
- 22:30Trent as much as anything I feel bad for like it happens in every
- 22:34sport, right? It's not just little girls, it's
- 22:37dads and it's moms and it's dads and it's you got want to see
- 22:41Michael Jordan back in the day and something happens to Michael
- 22:43Jordan or you or and now it's load management.
- 22:46Back then it wasn't you were legitimately hurt and Caitlin
- 22:49Clark is legitimately hurt. But all of these families that
- 22:52have, you know, scraped their their money together to take
- 22:56their daughter or their young children to see their hero.
- 23:00Or just go themselves. Or go themselves that feel worse
- 23:03for the kids, right. But it's just it's going to
- 23:07happen as part of sports and it was going to happen at some
- 23:10point in her career. I'm dying to see what these
- 23:13ratings are like a week from Saturday.
- 23:15It's it's it's Chicago. It's Angel Reese versus Caitlin
- 23:19Clark. Except Caitlin Clark's not going
- 23:21to be there. OK, Angel.
- 23:23Now it's up to you to hold that on and to bring those millions
- 23:27of people that would have watched that game on a Saturday
- 23:30night not on the ION network, not on the NBATV, not on local
- 23:34TV, on CBS national TV. Did you see what kind of number
- 23:40they got on Saturday afternoon? I did not.
- 23:42I watched the game. Yeah, yeah, outstanding.
- 23:44It really was great third quarter.
- 23:46Boy, they guarded her. Liberty are really good.
- 23:48Liberty are really. Good.
- 23:50They got a ton of different ways to get the FIFA were there.
- 23:53Yeah, the Fever were there. And came back from big deficits.
- 23:56And you shot saw that gap is closed.
- 23:58For sure. There's still a gap, Yep, the
- 24:00Liberty are still the gold standard, but that gap has
- 24:03certainly closed. And that final play.
- 24:07Yeah, yeah. We never got a great.
- 24:09Angle either No, I don't think she was filed.
- 24:11I don't think so. I don't think she was filed,
- 24:12yeah. But she this was the same entry
- 24:15she had that she sat in the preseason.
- 24:17Preseason, you're 100% right. Should she have played in Iowa
- 24:19City? I mean, if we want to get out
- 24:22the tinfoil hats, I mean, they're handy.
- 24:24I got them in the closet here. I never even thought of the
- 24:28answer. Should she?
- 24:29Maybe she, I mean, she played 20 minutes, 22 minutes, didn't
- 24:32play, didn't play much. I think she played 22 minutes.
- 24:34Rest and recovery as opposed to playing at an exhibition game.
- 24:38I wonder, you know, what else? I think it's kind of unfortunate
- 24:43that that that her franchise, the Fever are going to find out
- 24:48that maybe they wouldn't be Fever fans if it wasn't for 22O.
- 24:51Absolutely right. Oh, we're more than Caitlin
- 24:54Clark. We love the whole team.
- 24:56OK, here's your chance to prove it.
- 24:58We'll see. But I do feel bad for the for
- 25:00the families that we're going to and it's not I think there's
- 25:03only two or three, three maybe at tops that they're going she's
- 25:07going to miss on the road, assuming she's able to come back
- 25:11at the earliest, which is 2 weeks apparently anyways.
- 25:14All right, we'll take a time out.
- 25:16The bonus Bucks contest is over. It'll come back at some point,
- 25:19but it is over for the time being.
- 25:22So we'll head to break. We'll come back.
- 25:23Alec Bussy will join us. We'll pick Bussy's brain on what
- 25:26he thinks is happening when it comes to the Big 10, the SEC and
- 25:30what what does this mean for the Big 12?
- 25:33He's got some good pieces out as well, as he always does at
- 25:37cyclonealert.com. cyclonealert.com.
- 25:40Bussy next. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 25:42Monday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 25:43Network. I'm Millie Condon.
- 25:54Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network Trent Condon and Ken
- 25:58Miller with you until 2O clock in our number 2 Matt Snyder

- 26:04Scott Doctorman from The Athletic will join us at about
- 26:07125 Trends Plays of the Day Circus Sports sponsor those
- 26:10about 10 minutes before 2O clock.
- 26:12Alec Bussey cyclonealert.com Start of the week.
- 26:16No surprise content just overflowing at cyclonealert.com
- 26:20and we as readers are grateful for that.
- 26:22Alec Bussey, good to talk to you.
- 26:23How are you good? Guy, thanks for having me on.
- 26:26Appreciate, appreciate it as always and looking forward to a
- 26:29fun conversation after a good long weekend.
- 26:31Yeah, it really was. They all are.
- 26:34Could be 4 days but can have everything.
- 26:37Hey, the Big 12 basketball wise, I guess I want to start there.
- 26:40Got keeps getting better water deeper.
- 26:42BJ Haggerty, he's not going to K stand.
- 26:45I'm not sure with Tang they're ever going to reach that level
- 26:48that I thought they were headed towards a couple of years.
- 26:51Maybe elite 8? I know but but haven't got back
- 26:54there since then. But use and back to Houston.
- 26:58That reverberates to me because Houston is is if they're not on
- 27:02top, Texas Tech is there with them.
- 27:04BYU is making some noise. Obviously, TJ squad, this, this
- 27:09conference, it's not going to be any any worse this year, this
- 27:14coming year than it was this past year.
- 27:16It's just so deep, is it not? No, it's going to be really
- 27:20good. And obviously you mentioned
- 27:21Milos Usan coming back to Houston.
- 27:23That's one of the big draft day announcements that's come out
- 27:26here in relation to college basketball with players like
- 27:30Usan, Yaxel, London Borg, you know, Alex Condon at Florida,
- 27:34both announcing that they're coming back.
- 27:35The three of them are to their respective programs and Usan to
- 27:39me is probably the biggest headliner of them, especially
- 27:42for Big 12 kind of news cycles. I think Usain's return probably
- 27:45cements Houston as a preseason's top three team in the country,
- 27:48even though his return does lead to Pop Isaac's leaving Houston's
- 27:52roster and then eventually signing with Texas A&M here this
- 27:55morning. But Houston now has two All Big
- 27:5912 players returning with Usain and JoJo Tuggler in the front
- 28:02court. They also return Emmanuel Sharp,
- 28:04who was their best shooter a year ago on the wing even though
- 28:08he struggled in the national championship game over the last
- 28:10five minutes in particular. To me, Houston is probably the
- 28:13best team that they 12 on paper because they also bring in the
- 28:16number one recruiting class, which includes 3 top 20 national
- 28:19recruits headlined by Chris Phanek junior.
- 28:22He's a front court contributor. We'll give them some depth along
- 28:26with Toddler. We know how tough Houston always
- 28:28is. We know how good their defense
- 28:29is going to be. And now Usain is the head of the
- 28:32snake for a Kelvin Samson program that in my opinion has
- 28:35been one of the best in college basketball over the last seven
- 28:38years. And you got a factor in BYU,
- 28:40their top talent with Rob Wright from Baylor.
- 28:44You have to think about Richie Saunders coming back as an All
- 28:46Big 12 first team or AJ Debansa comes in as a #2 or #3 overall
- 28:50prospect in the country and according to 24/7 Sports, you
- 28:54mentioned Texas Tech, JT Topic comes back as the reigning Big
- 28:5712 player of the year. Christian Anderson greatly
- 29:00exceeded expectations as a freshman.
- 29:02He was awesome for them a year ago.
- 29:04They do lose Darion Williams to NC State via the transfer
- 29:07portal. He's also coming back to school
- 29:09after withdrawing from the NBA draft.
- 29:11But to bring in with John Watts junior, he's a transfer from
- 29:14Washington State who gives them some depth and some ability on
- 29:17the wing or at the four. Then you mentioned Iowa State.
- 29:20They also return a couple of the 12 players and Tayman Livesey
- 29:24and and Joshua Jefferson. Kansas, they miss out on Darian
- 29:28Williams, they miss out on Dame SAR.
- 29:30But right now I think that they probably look like the top 25
- 29:33team here again, as always in the preseason, Darren Peterson
- 29:36being the potential number one draft pick in 2026.
- 29:40Lori Vedunga comes back, Melvin Council Junior transfers in from
- 29:43Saint Bonaventure I believe, and they also bring in Jaden Dawson
- 29:47from Loyola Chicago. So K you had some inspiring
- 29:50pieces as well. They just need one more star to
- 29:52really kind of round it out and the team, I didn't mention
- 29:54Arizona, I think it's going to be really good as well.
- 29:56They bring in Gina Bradley returns at guard, they bring in
- 30:00Coy Pete Bradenberry's 2 five star freshman who I think will
- 30:04contribute well along with Henry Basar.
- 30:07He transfers to North Carolina, but they bring back.
- 30:10Monte has Crevas to start at the five after he missed much of
- 30:13last season because of injury. So it's deep at the top, it's
- 30:15talented at the top, much like we thought at this point a year
- 30:18ago. You wrote a week ago about the
- 30:21schedule non conference that was released by Iowa State.
- 30:24But also in there something that I forgot.
- 30:25It happened during the Big 12 tournament, the announcement
- 30:28that they were going from 20 back to 18 games.
- 30:31Now for us to just love watching basketball, that's not a great
- 30:33thing. But we see what happened to this
- 30:35non conference scheduling going to Purdue, getting a neutral
- 30:38site against Mississippi State, 20 games slight not sure if
- 30:41those games or certainly both of them would have happened.
- 30:44Are your thoughts though in the Big 12 as a whole making that
- 30:47step back and and with all the travel in this conference again,
- 30:51would like to see more games. Completely understand it though
- 30:53with all the travel that's happening.
- 30:56Yeah, I mean, I think I'm frustrated and disappointed that
- 30:59they're going back to an 18 game league schedule.
- 31:01The ACC is also doing it. I think the SEC also plays 18
- 31:05games the the Big East. They don't play 20 games either,
- 31:09I don't believe. I think they played.
- 31:10They do, I guess. I think another Big 10.
- 31:14They obviously play 20, so the big time kind of an exclusive at
- 31:1720 now potentially. They used to, I'd have to double
- 31:19check on how many they play. But the Big 12 going back to 18,
- 31:22I think it's disappointing just from a conference perspective.
- 31:26They said in March that it was a decision kind of made in terms
- 31:29of competitiveness. The trying to find a buy type of
- 31:32week in the schedule wasn't possible.
- 31:35Playing 20 games post Christmas. I think that's one of the
- 31:38reasons why you see the Big 10 play those two games in early
- 31:41December or late November that a lot of fans have become
- 31:44accustomed to. The Big 12 wasn't going to do
- 31:47that. They decide not to do that for
- 31:49this upcoming season, so they go back to 18 games.
- 31:52I think it's frustrating, but I respect TJ Alsenberger and I
- 31:54certainly respect his staff for not replacing those games with
- 31:59SWAC opponents or MIAC opponents or some team that they're going
- 32:03to bring into Hilton Coliseum and blast by 45 points.
- 32:06To me, they kind of replace them with, you know, a marquee Rd.
- 32:10game at Purdue. That's a home and home Purdue
- 32:13will come to Hilton Coliseum and 2627.
- 32:15You also get a high major opponent in Mississippi State.
- 32:19They've been in the NCA tournament the last three years
- 32:22as an 8 or 9 seed roughly in South Dakota.
- 32:25You kind of replaced those two games that you lost in my
- 32:28opinion. So I commend I would say for
- 32:30doing that. And I think it's something that
- 32:32the league, when they announced they were going back to an 18
- 32:35game league schedule, they said it's important for us to play
- 32:39games against marquee opponents in the non con.
- 32:41And I'm happy to see that Iowa State has held up their end of
- 32:44the bargain. Now I need to kind of look and
- 32:45see how the rest of the league is doing it because obviously
- 32:49two seasons ago, three seasons ago, the whole gaming the net
- 32:53discussion became quite popular in the Big 12.
- 32:56That's for sure. And I even like the fact that
- 32:57they're holding those exhibitions and they're against
- 33:00great and they're against Northwestern.
- 33:01I know they don't mean anything, but it's better than playing
- 33:03athletes in action. You know, you at least you get a
- 33:06little something from it. So I, I applaud them for that.
- 33:09I enjoyed your piece about the five most important games,
- 33:11football games of the upcoming 2025 season.
- 33:16I think they jump off the page. I, I, I can't find fault in
- 33:19anyone that you've selected. They're, they're all meaningful
- 33:23in their own right. And specifically, I think I mean
- 33:26this I, I don't think we can underestimate how, just how
- 33:31important this K state game is in Ireland week 0 on August
- 33:3723rd. And the fact you absolutely have
- 33:39to be ready to play, if not your best football as as well as you
- 33:44can. And we've seen Iowa State
- 33:45struggle early in in previous years, get gotten a little
- 33:48better the last couple years. But man, oh man, the importance
- 33:51of getting off on the right foot against K state in a league
- 33:54that's going to have seemingly as much parity as it did last
- 33:58year. They've got to win this one.
- 34:01Yeah, I think it's paramount and I think the impact of the
- 34:03Sidehawk game grows depending on the results of the game against
- 34:07K State either way. Because if you win, you should
- 34:10have an opportunity to get to 3 and O and that's obviously
- 34:14something that they would be accomplishing for back-to-back
- 34:16years. And that's a big deal.
- 34:18If you lose, you're potentially staring down the barrel of a one
- 34:22and two or an O and three start, depending on the result of the
- 34:26South Dakota game at Jack Trice, which I would say should be
- 34:29fully expected to win. But I think that the case a game
- 34:33is immensely important because not only if you lose, not only
- 34:37if you win it or you want to know on the season or if you
- 34:39lose it, are you all in one on the season.
- 34:42But you're also in that spot in the Big 12 standings against
- 34:44another team that you think is going to be at the top of the
- 34:47league and has enough pedigree to kind of assume that they'll
- 34:50be there. Considering Chris Kleinman has
- 34:52won eight games in every year that he's been at K State except
- 34:55the COVID year in 2020. So if you lose, you're already a
- 34:59game back in the Big 12 race. And I think that this Big 12
- 35:02schedule for Iowa State projects to be more difficult.
- 35:05So stacking wins early in the league I think is really
- 35:08valuable for them because in late October, early November,
- 35:12you get games against quality opponents like BYU and Arizona
- 35:16State, back-to-back games at Jack Tri Stadium.
- 35:19You get KU around that time of the year as well, and they lost
- 35:22three straight to Kansas dating back to 2022.
- 35:25You have to go on the road to Colorado this year as well.
- 35:28And I think Colorado is a big mystery.
- 35:30But I do think that you look at the way they built their roster
- 35:33this upcoming year, just about 20 incoming transfers, including
- 35:36quarterback Kitten Salter from Liberty.
- 35:39I don't think that they're going to be a laughing stock.
- 35:41Like I think that they should be a pretty respectable opponent at
- 35:46the very least. So I think all of those factors
- 35:48contribute to the K state game being increasingly important.
- 35:52And if you want to make a run back to Arlington and play for
- 35:55third Big 12 championship under Matt Campbell, you probably need
- 35:59to beat some of the other teams at the top of the league, or at
- 36:01least teams that we think are going to be there.
- 36:03And certainly K State, Arizona State and BYU are all in that
- 36:07group and all three of them are mentioned and the story along
- 36:09with along with Iowa. Ted mentioned slow starts and
- 36:14last year obviously was not the case as they raced out to six
- 36:16and O got Iowa and and got off to that good start.
- 36:20Do they think they found found something something that works
- 36:22early in the season? Because as paramount as it was a
- 36:25year ago, it goes up a degree this year with what they have
- 36:27with that K State game. Do you think they they figured
- 36:30out maybe what they needed to change to play better early in
- 36:33the year? Yeah.
- 36:35I mean, I, I think it's something that you would
- 36:37certainly want to hope that they they start well again this
- 36:41upcoming year. The schedule is certainly more
- 36:43difficult at the beginning of the season than it was a year
- 36:45ago because you also have the road game at Arkansas State and
- 36:48playing AG5 school on the road is never fun.
- 36:51I would also say that I think it's important for them to start
- 36:54fast just because you have new pieces at various positions.
- 36:59You got a couple new starters on the offensive line, you've got a
- 37:01couple of starters in the secondary and on the defensive
- 37:03line and obviously at wide receiver as well.
- 37:06In terms of finding the secret for it, I think one year, one
- 37:09thing they did last year in training camp and throughout the
- 37:11offseason was really physical practices.
- 37:14I know that's something that they've done in the past, but it
- 37:16seems like they ramped it up a bit a year ago.
- 37:19I think it's something they were comfortable doing a year ago
- 37:20because they had so much returning production and they
- 37:22knew what they had from those guys.
- 37:25So if they could challenge them a little bit more, I think this
- 37:28year you're going to see them continue to practice hard.
- 37:31And it's something that I think that they made a priority of
- 37:35doing in the spring that Campbell has talked about that.
- 37:37I think you want to see that carry over to the training,
- 37:39training camp months in late July and and throughout August
- 37:43as they prepare to play K State in Dublin.
- 37:45But after that it's it's continuing to sustained
- 37:48certainly from a health perspective and obviously from a
- 37:50production standpoint early in the year to to play at a high
- 37:53level. Seconds left.
- 37:56The Iowa State announced their additions to the roster, one
- 37:59that didn't make the list that you followed up on.
- 38:02Tamatoa McDonough, transfer from Yale.
- 38:04Defensive. An edge rusher, which they
- 38:06certainly need. What are the chances that he's a
- 38:08factor? 20 seconds Tamatoa McDonough
- 38:11from Yale. Yeah, he's my favorite edge
- 38:14rusher that they brought in this year. 6 1/2 stacks last year at
- 38:17Yale. He factors in along with Canon
- 38:19Butler and Von Trey Malone as address transfers.
- 38:23I like McDonough, the Melt 2's most productive a year ago.
