- 1:03Saul wasn't able to defeat the giant in his life because he wasn't willing to
- 1:07take God at his word and trust him completely.
- 1:10So Saul did it his way, and it didn't work.
- 1:13David, on the other hand, declared the power of the Lord to allow God's power
- 1:18to flow through him to defeat the giant.
- 1:21David trusted completely, removed himself from the planning,
- 1:24and simply followed the will of God.
- 1:27Join us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries as Kim takes us on a
- 1:31journey through the Scriptures, examining the difference between battling in
- 1:35the Lord's strength and battling in our own strength.
- 1:38Hello and welcome to this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries.
- 1:42Today we're going to look at something that hits all of us smack dab in the face.
- 1:48We're going to look at how we attack,
- 1:53how we navigate, and how we think about the problems and the troubles that come into our lives.
- 2:03And we're going to look at two very different ways of doing it.
- 2:09One, we're going to look at how Saul did it.
- 2:13Saul was an incredibly intelligent man. He was filled with wisdom,
- 2:17and he was filled with riches.
- 2:19And Saul often headed into every situation with his logic in front of him,
- 2:29with his theories and his ways and his wealth backing him.
- 2:34He often had a partly good idea. He often was partially obedient.
- 2:43But to be partially obedient is to be fully disobedient.
- 2:49And Saul reaped consequences from his decision to rely upon himself.
- 2:55If you look at 1 Samuel 15, beginning in verse 9 and going through verse 11,
- 3:02you see this, But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep
- 3:06and of the oxen and of the fatlings and the lambs and all that was good and
- 3:11would not utterly destroy them.
- 3:12But everything that was vile and refuge, they destroyed utterly.
- 3:17Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying, It repenteth me that I have
- 3:21set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from me, following me,
- 3:26and hath not performed my commandments.
- 3:28And it grieved Samuel, and he cried unto the Lord all night.
- 3:33See, here's the situation.
- 3:35Saul had a giant in his life. He had the Amekalites. and he was to go in and
- 3:45obliterate all of them and everything they had.
- 3:50But Saul thinks to himself and says, well, if I obliterate all of them except
- 3:58the king, I can bring the king back and maybe for a ransom or something,
- 4:03somehow get even more money.
- 4:05And I could even take that money and I could build the work of the Lord.
- 4:09I could build the kingdom.
- 4:11And he destroys all of the bad sheep and oxen, but he keeps the best because
- 4:18he says he could give that as a burnt offering to the Lord.
- 4:22And that is where we see in Scripture, where he says it's better to obey than to sacrifice.
- 4:31Because what Saul actually did was he took the commandments of the Lord,
- 4:38And he modified them to fit his logic and what he thought would work for him
- 4:44and what he thought was best.
- 4:47And before we go one step further to condemn Saul,
- 4:52I want you to stop in your tracks and think about how you handle the word of
- 5:00the Lord that he gives to you directly through prayer, meditation, and scripture.
- 5:04How you take the commandments that have been written for all of us to follow
- 5:09and how you modify them to work into your lifestyle or into your family or into your crowd.
- 5:16We're all guilty of doing what Saul did at least once or twice, if not frequently.
- 5:21We hear what God says to us. It doesn't sit quite right with us or it doesn't
- 5:26make perfect sense to us.
- 5:28And then we begin to think on it or think about it. And then what we do is we
- 5:33begin to modify what he said till it makes sense to us, but it is completely
- 5:38opposite of what he told him to do or what he tells us.
- 5:42He told Saul, go into the land and obliterate it.
- 5:47Saul looked around and thought, well,
- 5:49I could get more money and that's something I could use for the Lord.
- 5:53Or we'll take these best sheep and oxen and we'll give them to the Lord.
- 5:58That's not what God said. And what I want you to hear, if you hear nothing else
- 6:04ever before from me or since this moment, I want you to hear this.
- 6:09Nothing short of strict obedience to the Lord's instructions are acceptable.
- 6:17Anything less than strict obedience to the Lord's instructions produce grief
- 6:24in heaven and pain and loss on earth.
- 6:29Nothing short of strict obedience is acceptable.
- 6:36Saul did not adhere to the strict obedience to the commandments,
- 6:43and this is what it cost him.
- 6:45The Lord told Samuel, basically, he regrets having set him up to be king,
- 6:53because he turned his back from following after me.
- 6:58And at that moment, it wasn't the first time Saul had used his logic in his
- 7:05head, and it didn't turn out well for him,
- 7:08but it was the last time he was going to be able to do it, and God not correct
- 7:13him and remove him as king.
- 7:15See, 1 Samuel 15 gives us a very strong picture of what it means to continually,
- 7:23habitually, not strictly obey the word of God.
- 7:29It grieves Samuel because Samuel knew the potential that Saul had,
- 7:34and he knew what Saul could have done.
- 7:36But Jesus says that he turned his back from following him.
- 7:43Saul started on the right path, but his own intellect was his demise.
- 7:51Because as you can see in this account in first samuel 15 saul begins to put
- 7:58his ideas above god's ideas he inserts logic where faith must be now if we turn
- 8:08just a couple chapters over.
- 8:11We find David, who is the person God chooses to give the throne to after Saul no longer holds it.
- 8:22What we see from this in 1 Samuel 13, 14 is what God is looking for when he's
- 8:31choosing people to do his work.
- 8:34In 1 Samuel 13, verse 14, this is what he says, But now thy kingdom shall not
- 8:45continue. This is what he's talking about with Saul.
- 8:47The Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded
- 8:54him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.
- 9:00It was costly for Saul to insert his logic.
- 9:04Not only did it not work out well for him it also cost him his kingdom it cost him his position.
- 9:13More importantly it cost him his position with
- 9:17the lord because he was no longer trusting in
- 9:20the lord with his whole heart and soul and here comes
- 9:23david a man after god's own heart and we
- 9:25just read in first samuel 13 verse 14 that's
- 9:29what god is looking for he's not looking for
- 9:32the biggest and the best and in our in our example
- 9:35of how god chooses david and how
- 9:38david chooses to trust fully and completely upon
- 9:42god by allowing the holy spirit and the god of the universe and all of that
- 9:46power to flow through him to do that which he's called to do when he faces the
- 9:51giant in this very familiar account we are going to see the difference between
- 9:56leaning on our own heart leaning in our own Mind.
- 10:01And how the two of those are different. When we lean on our own mind and our
- 10:06own understanding, we are leaving God out of it.
- 10:10And we have now put ourselves on the throne that rightfully belongs to him.
- 10:16Now, most of the people listening to this are not kings of the land.
- 10:20But you have situations in your life. You have problems in your life.
- 10:25You have issues in your life. And God said he would never leave you nor forsake
- 10:29you. So therefore, he is waiting to give you the information.
- 10:33He is speaking to you, but you are so puffed up and so arrogant in your own
- 10:38self that you have forgotten who the King of Kings is and the Lord of Lords is.
- 10:44You've displaced him from your life, just like Saul did.
- 10:47And you've decided, well, you've got some good ideas, Lord, but let me massage
- 10:51them. Let me modify them.
- 10:53Let me make them work for me. And I'll just show you what a good idea is.
- 10:56And then you are headed for a fall because pride always comes before a fall.
- 11:03And when you live in arrogance and pride, the fall is a painful one.
- 11:08And Saul has shown us that through his life in 1 Samuel 15.
- 11:14But in 1 Samuel 17, in the first 10 verses, the giant begins to come on the
- 11:21sting and he begins to declare himself.
- 11:25It says, now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle and were
- 11:30gathered together at Shoko, which belonged to Judah, and pitched between Shoko
- 11:36and Ezekiah in Ephesadam.
- 11:39And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together and pitched by the valley
- 11:44of Elah and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
- 11:48So here we are, everybody's there, and you begin to see how the giant starts
- 11:56talking about themselves.
- 11:57In verse 4, he says there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines
- 12:01named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
- 12:06And he had a helmet of brass up on his head, and he was armed with a coat of
- 12:10mail, and the weight of the coat was 5,000 shekels of brass.
- 12:14And then he continues to talk about his staff and his spear in verses 6 and 7.
- 12:20But in verse 8, he declares this, And he stood and cried unto the armies of
- 12:25Israel and said unto them,
- 12:27why are you come out to set your battle in
- 12:30array am not i a philistine and you
- 12:33servants to saul choose you a man for you
- 12:36and let him come down to me if he be able to
- 12:39fight with me and to kill me then will we be your servants but if i prevail
- 12:43against him and kill him then shall ye be our servants and serve us so here
- 12:50you have it the giant philistine with all of the world's armor and battle equipment.
- 12:57Is declaring a war right there against Israel.
- 13:03And he's declaring what he is going to do.
- 13:07If you can beat me, I, I, I.
- 13:12The giant is clearly impressed with himself, and he is clearly impressed with
- 13:21his stature, with the things he has, with his knowledge.
- 13:27So like Saul, who's using logic, here comes the giant who's completely convinced
- 13:34he's all that and a bag of chips.
- 13:37He's convinced in his own strength and his past accomplishments.
- 13:42But when you look at 1 Samuel 17, verses 11 through 19, And we see that in verse
- 13:4911, Saul and Israel heard the words of the Philistine and they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
- 13:56This man is coming, and he's talking trash.
- 14:01And he's talking and boasting about how good and how big he is.
- 14:06It's coming straight from his mind.
- 14:09Now, David, we see in verses 12 through 19, that David's left back at home.
- 14:20His brothers are in the battlefield. and the giant draws near.
- 14:24And for 40 days, he taunts the people.
- 14:28In verse 16, it says, and the Philistine drew near morning and evening and presented himself 40 days.
- 14:35I mean, you talk about a man who was sure of himself.
- 14:39You talk about a man who thought that everybody should bow to him.
- 14:44This is this giant. He's coming out in all of his glory morning and evening
- 14:50and showing himself to the people.
- 14:53The people are sore afraid.
- 14:56And so as we get to verse 17, we see that Jesse, which is David's father,
- 15:05is tasking David to go to where the armies are and to take lunch for his brother.
- 15:12And I want you to see his brothers.
- 15:14In verse 20, it says this, and David rose up early in the morning. Let's read that again.
- 15:22And David rose up early in the morning.
- 15:27David didn't slack. He didn't wait. He didn't sleep in.
- 15:34He didn't let the blanket get victory.
- 15:37No, David was given a task and David got on it.
- 15:40And many times you see in scripture that David seeks the Lord early in the morning.
- 15:49Before the devil's got a hold on him, before the devil can get him in his grasp,
- 15:55David is working in the morning with the Lord, doing what the Lord is asking him to do.
- 16:01And in this instance, what his father Jesse is asking him to do.
- 16:04But because he's obedient to his father, his father's telling him to do the right thing.
- 16:09And we are to obey those that have authority over us who are giving us the right information.
- 16:15And because he had an obedient heart, and because he was willing to sacrifice
- 16:19and do that which he was told,
- 16:22he got up early in the morning, and he finds himself in just a little few verses down,
- 16:28in the right place at the right time for God to do the amazing thing God has
- 16:33wanted to do, has intended to do, has planned to do, has strategized to do,
- 16:38and is going to do through David.
- 16:40But if David had not had an obedient heart, beginning with obedience to his
- 16:45father, he would not have been in the right place at the right time,
- 16:49and God would have used some other way, some other thing to do his work.
- 16:54So often we are slacking and we are lazy and we haven't done the prep work and
- 17:00we haven't studied and we don't have the heart that God has conditioned to put
- 17:05us in the place where we're supposed to be and to be able to receive what we're supposed to receive,
- 17:11but instead we are going about in this world talking about loving Jesus.
- 17:15Acting like we're doing his work, busy about stuff that looks churchy,
- 17:19saying churchy religious words, and our heart is not conditioned to be obedient to the Lord,
- 17:26to be obedient to the word, to be obedient to the spirit, to walk in obedience,
- 17:31to love him above all things,
- 17:32to trust in him with all of our heart, and to not lean into our own understanding.
- 17:37We can talk it, but we're not walking it. But David...
- 17:42He has an obedient heart. Now, many of you who've read a lot of the scriptures
- 17:46are going to say, man, he messed up all the time.
- 17:48David slid all over the rock, but he held to the rock. But more importantly, the rock held him.
- 17:55And in John 10, 28, it says, no man will pluck you out of the father's hand.
- 18:00David was a man of like passions like me and you.
- 18:03David didn't get it right all the time but it said
- 18:07in first samuel 13 14 that he
- 18:10was a man after god's own heart it shows
- 18:13right here in first samuel 17 that david had an obedient heart david loved the
- 18:21lord ultimately if he didn't get it right every time he would come back with
- 18:28a contrite heart and he would repent convicted,
- 18:32the Lord would forgive him just like he does us in 1 John 1.9 when he says if
- 18:36we confess our sins he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse
- 18:41us from all unrighteousness.
- 18:43God doesn't expect perfection but God does require obedience.
- 18:51We must obey. His word must have meaning to us.
- 18:56His word must be our supreme authority.
- 19:02As David rises to take his food to his brothers, I want you to see in verse
- 19:0816, he says this, and the Beryllicines drew near morning and evening.
- 19:15Verse 26, we read that in verse 16. In verse 26, we see this.
- 19:20And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to
- 19:25the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel?
- 19:30For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?
- 19:36If you listen closely to what David is saying in verse 26 of 1 Samuel 17, what you see is this.
- 19:44David is enraged that somebody is trying to defy God's plan and God's purpose and God's people.
- 19:57When's the last time you were indignantly insulted because someone took the Lord's name in vain?
- 20:08Or someone tried to rise up against a plan you knew the Lord had?
- 20:12Perhaps the plan god had given you to execute but you just wilted under the
- 20:20pressure of someone's thoughts see i want you to go back in first samuel 17
- 20:27and see that as we look at this.
- 20:32David's brothers are completely getting ready to mock him they're embarrassed
- 20:38by him they think the idea is ridiculous.
- 20:42Saul, the king of the land, he thinks it's ridiculous. Nobody is saying that a boy, David.
- 20:49Nobody's patting him on the shoulder. Nobody really is encouraging him to move forward.
- 20:55But see, David knew the key to living successful in this life.
- 21:02And it was to bow only to the one true living God.
- 21:06It was to listen only to the voice of God.
- 21:11It was to seek only the applause and the approval of nail-scarred hands.
- 21:17David didn't care what the world thought. David didn't care what his family thought.
- 21:23David understood who God was. And David was declaring who God was with every
- 21:31step of courage and faith he took.
- 21:34As we move forward, here we see in verse 27, And the people answered him after
- 21:39this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
- 21:44And Eliab, his eldest brother, heard when he spake unto men.
- 21:48And Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither?
- 21:55And with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness?
- 21:58I know thy pride and thy naughtiness of thine heart, for thou art come down
- 22:03that thou mightest see the battle.
- 22:05David has come to give them food.
- 22:08David has come to do the task he was asked. David is showing up with an obedient heart.
- 22:15And the people he loved the most and cared the most about, they were mocking
- 22:19him and they didn't understand him.
- 22:22And they were accusing him falsely of something that wasn't even true.
- 22:27Now that right there would be enough to send some of us packing.
- 22:31Crying, running for the nearest shelter as far away from this as possible because
- 22:36instead of listening to God and obeying the voice of God And instead of doing.
- 22:41What he's asking us to do,
- 22:43those little weak voices around us that seem so loud, that seem so mean,
- 22:48that seem so consistent and persistent, those are the ones we're listening to.
- 22:53And the Lord said, let the world be put away.
- 22:57Because if you're friends with the world, you'll be an enemy with God in James 4.4.
- 23:01And he says, listen to my voice. He says, my sheep hear my voice and they know
- 23:07me. In John 10, oh, friends, we have to get our priorities straight.
- 23:14And it starts as to whether or not we're going to serve the Lord with our whole heart, mind,
- 23:21soul, and strength from our heart of faith and obedience, or whether we're going
- 23:26to rely on ourself and serve through our head,
- 23:31through our knowledge, through our church speak.
- 23:33The only thing that's going to work we learn
- 23:36from saul is to do it with our
- 23:39heart to be fully engaged fully
- 23:42bought in fully sold out saul had almost all of it right but he wasn't obedient
- 23:48strict obedience is what god requires remember he's not going to bless only
- 23:53slight obedience or partial obedience because partial obedience is disobedience.
- 24:00He can only bless a heart that is obedient.
- 24:04He doesn't hear the prayers of iniquity in our heart. We have to be.
- 24:10Compliant to the commandments of the Lord and pliable in the hands of God so
- 24:17that he can use us and mold us to do impossible things through his strength.
- 24:23All things are possible to him that believe us.
- 24:25Saul's working from his head, but we're going to see David works from his heart.
- 24:31As you continue to read verse 30, he says, and he turned from him toward another
- 24:37and spake after the same manner, and the people answered him again.
- 24:40After the former manner. And when the words were heard, which David spake,
- 24:44they rehearsed them before Saul and he sent for them.
- 24:48David said to Saul in verse 32, this is a fearless David, but he's not fearless
- 24:55like the giant who was fearless in his own strength and fearless relying on his own self.
- 25:03No, he's fearless because of his defense of God, his faith in God and who God is.
- 25:10So when David said to Saul, let no man's heart fail because of him,
- 25:14thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
- 25:17And Saul said to David, thou are not able to go against this Philistine to fight
- 25:21with him, for thou art but a youth.
- 25:23He a man of war from his youth.
- 25:26David said unto Saul, thy servant kept his father's sheep.
- 25:30And there came a lion and a bear and took a lamb out of the flock.
- 25:34And when I went after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth,
- 25:38And when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and smote him and slew him.
- 25:43Now don't fly over this verse, people.
- 25:47I want you to look at this verse carefully.
- 25:50He said, I went out after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth.
- 25:58When he arose against me, David's speaking of being a shepherd.
- 26:03And he doesn't use these words lightly.
- 26:07David said as a shepherd when the
- 26:10lion came after my sheep and grabbed
- 26:14it and had it in its mouth I took the sheep out and I smote the lion it's not
- 26:22coincidence that we're told in 1 Peter 5 that the devil walketh about as a roaring
- 26:29lion seeking whom he may devour be sober, be vigilant it.
- 26:34In this picture of David killing the lion and taking back what is rightfully his,
- 26:40you can rest assured as a child of God that regardless of where you're at right
- 26:45now, if the devil has a stronghold on you, if the devil has a grasp on you,
- 26:50if the devil is choking you,
- 26:53the shepherd's hands that are now scarred are right there asking you to ask
- 26:58for help, asking you to believe in his presence, asking you to follow strictly
- 27:03what he's telling you to do, and he will deliver you.
- 27:08David speaks as the shepherd having strength beyond what he should have.
- 27:14Verse 36, he says, thy servant slew both the lion and the bear,
- 27:19and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied
- 27:24the armies of the living God.
- 27:27Daniel, I mean, excuse me, David isn't fighting because he wants a name for himself.
- 27:34He isn't fighting because the giant is mocking him twice a day,
- 27:43evening and night, morning and evening.
- 27:46No, David is angered because someone is trying to come against his God.
- 27:55They're saying bad things about his God. They're making his God small.
- 28:01They're limiting his God. David as a shepherd, understanding how Jesus is the shepherd.
- 28:08A picture of that for each of us realizes that through God, in God's strength,
- 28:15for God's glory, that roaring lion, that massive giant has no chance.
- 28:23In verse 37, David said, moreover,
- 28:27the lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of
- 28:33the bear he will deliver me out of the hand of this philistine it's all said
- 28:40unto david go and the lord be with thee.
- 28:44David was fearless in his defense of god because of his faith in god david was
- 28:52fearless in this moment against his giant because of his great and intense belief
- 28:59of God and what God could do in and through him.
- 29:04And his witness was seen by all.
- 29:09And Saul picks up on this and he says, the Lord be with thee.
- 29:17We don't live in a vacuum. We are not isolated from the rest of the world.
- 29:23And friends, when you sin, people see it.
- 29:27And when you stand strong for the Lord, people see it.
- 29:30And you have an influence and an impact on them both ways.
- 29:35And as a child of God, you should always be impacting people to move forward,
- 29:42to move closer, to see how to live better with him, to be more intent in your
- 29:47purpose, to follow his commandments strictly,
- 29:50fully, and completely.
- 29:53Anything less grieves heaven and causes you pain.
- 29:58In verse 39, let's read back to 38.
- 30:03And Saul armed David with his armor, and he put a helmet of brass upon his head,
- 30:07and also he armed him with a coat of mail.
- 30:11Now, Saul is trying to give David the best worldly advantage he can.
- 30:18That's the world's logic.
- 30:20That would be the world's strategy. There'd been plenty of people who have used
- 30:25that strategy, and it was effective.
- 30:27So it would make sense that this little, handsome, red-haired,
- 30:31teeny boy who is about to face a massive giant would need all he could have
- 30:41physically to protect him.
- 30:43But here's what David says about the world's logic.
- 30:48This is what David says about the world's equipment. it.
- 30:52This is what David says about using man's logic and ideas and strategy to do God's work.
- 31:03He says, David girded his sword upon his armor and he asked thee to go, for he had not proved it.
- 31:10David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these, for I have not proved them.
- 31:15David put them off of him. see he knew what had gotten him victory every time
- 31:21it was doing exactly what god said the way god said it and when god said it
- 31:26and god was not in the worldly armor god wasn't in the worldly equipment.
- 31:36God had not told David to use that. David had never used it,
- 31:41and it clearly couldn't have fit him well.
- 31:43Let me tell you something about that.
- 31:45If the world's logic and the world's equipment and the things of the world fit
- 31:52you nicely and you are comfortable in them, you have a problem with your spiritual life.
- 31:58You've got a problem with God. because the things of this world should grow
- 32:03strangely dim in the light of his love and his mercy and his grace.
- 32:09The things of this world are opposing to the things of God.
- 32:14And again, we are told that if you're friends with the world,
- 32:17you're an enemy with God.
- 32:181 Corinthians 5, 17, he says that when we become saved, we are new creatures
- 32:23in Christ and that the old things are passed away and all things are become new.
- 32:28The things of this world the things of darkness no
- 32:31longer attract you they no longer
- 32:34are part of your habits they are no longer part of your desires but you're a
- 32:40new creature and christ jesus is in you and the things of god are what important
- 32:45the word of god and feasting on it is your desire his will is your purpose his strength is your fuel.
- 32:54That's what David shows us. He's getting ready to go headfirst into this battle,
- 33:00but he's going to do it in the will of God, in the way of God.
- 33:05And when God says, do it, and perhaps what battle you're facing right now,
- 33:10what issue you might have, perhaps you need to stop for a second and consult God for his plan.
- 33:17And whether it makes any sense or not, don't worry about it.
- 33:20Do exactly what he says, how he says it, when he says it, and don't worry about the why.
- 33:25Had David taken a moment to think, I'm going to fight this battle and I've got no armor.
- 33:32This massive beast in front of me is fully equipped. There would have been fear.
- 33:38Perfect love casts out all fear.
- 33:40So David is keeping his eyes on Jesus and the prophet Isaiah said that if we
- 33:45would just keep our mind on him,
- 33:48keep focused on him, that we'll have peace because
- 33:51we trust in him in isaiah 26 3
- 33:54david is living out all of these things
- 33:58he's living out for your trust in proverbs 3 5
- 34:016 and 7 he's living out not depending on yourself in proverbs 3 5 6 and 7 he's
- 34:07living out trusting in the lord and having perfect peace this man goes forward
- 34:13this little boy goes forward to battle he's not hesitant that's a person of
- 34:18faith that's a person with peace.
- 34:21That's a person who believes in what he says.
- 34:25Oh, how we might need to stop for a moment. Drop some self-help books.
- 34:31Forget the advice of friends and family.
- 34:35Don't let the ridicule, the mocking, the misunderstanding of even your mentors
- 34:40stop you or halt you or delay you in taking another step towards what God has told you to do.
- 34:49David isn't going to adopt worldly logic or worldly ways, and he's clear about it.
- 34:54So we pick up in verse 40, he says, And he took his staff, his hand,
- 34:59and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's
- 35:04bag, which he had, even a scrip, and his sling was in his hand.
- 35:08And he drew near to the Philistine.
- 35:10And the Philistine came on and
- 35:12drew near unto David, and the man that bare the shield went before him.
- 35:16And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him,
- 35:21for he is but a use and ruddy and of a fair countenance.
- 35:24The world's never going to understand the power of God that's in you,
- 35:28but it doesn't stop the power of God from doing what it's intended to do.
- 35:33And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog that thou comest to me with staves?
- 35:38And the Philistine cursed David by his God.
- 35:41And the Philistine said to David, come to me and I will give thy flesh into
- 35:44the fowls of the air and to the beasts of the field.
- 35:49David's going head first into this battle. Beginning in verse 5,
- 35:54we're going to see that he fights with the power of the Lord and he declares
- 35:58the Lord will deliver him.
- 36:00He is living out his faith.
- 36:05Then said David to the Philistine, thou comest to me with a sword and with a spear and with a shield.
- 36:12Here's what he says. But I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts,
- 36:18the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defiled.
- 36:23This day will the Lord deliver thee into my hand, and I will smite thee and
- 36:30take thine head from thee, and I will give thy carcasses to the hosts of the Philistines this day,
- 36:35and to the fowls of the air, and to the wild beast of the earth and all the
- 36:41earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Again.
- 36:45He is fighting in the strength and the power of the Lord for the glory of the Lord.
- 36:51He's going to smite the devil, which is this Philistine, this giant,
- 36:57because God is going to deliver that giant in defeat to David.
- 37:05And he's no respecter of persons.
- 37:08What he did for David, he'll do for you. but will you do for him what David continually did?
- 37:18David is living out his faith against all worldly knowledge,
- 37:24against his own intellect, against what strategy and things of the past and
- 37:30history would have said to be done.
- 37:32David believes in the name of God.
- 37:35David believes with a sense of faith that is unshakable that God will deliver him.
- 37:42David is in constant communication with God, and he's hearing what God has to
- 37:47say, and he's walking in the strength of the Lord.
- 37:50He has put himself aside, and he is a vessel filled and fit for service because
- 37:56his faith is in God and in God alone.
- 38:00Verse 47, and all this assembly shall know that the Lord save us not with sword
- 38:07and spear, for the battle is the Lord's and he will give you into our hands.
- 38:13He was steadfast on that.
- 38:16It was about God and God in him. It was about God's purpose and not his own.
- 38:21This problem that you're facing this issue that's troubling you friend invite
- 38:29god into it follow him completely partial obedience is full disobedience,
- 38:36He doesn't need you to insert your idea, opinion, or thought.
- 38:40He needs you to have a heart or want you to have a heart of absolute and full obedience.
- 38:49Verses 48 through 49, we watch God deliver David.
- 38:54And it came to pass when the Philistine arose and came and drew not to meet
- 38:58David, that David hasted and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
- 39:02He ran full on fully confident
- 39:05in the name of the lord and david
- 39:08put his hand in his bag and he took fence a stone and
- 39:11sling it and smote the philistine in his
- 39:14forehead that the stone sunk into his forehead and he fell upon his face to
- 39:21the earth simple physics would tell you that if david had killed the philistine
- 39:25with a slingshot he would have fallen backwards on his head the scripture says,
- 39:32the stone stuck and he fell forward, opposite of momentum.
- 39:38Only Jesus can defy gravity and momentum.
- 39:42Only Jesus could make that Philistine fall forward.
- 39:47Then look what happens. In verses 50 and 51, it says, So David prevailed over
- 39:53the Philistine with a sling and with a stone and smote the Philistine and slew him.
- 39:57But there was no sword in the hand of David and,
- 40:00Therefore David ran and stood upon the Philistine and took his sword and drew
- 40:04it out of the sheath thereof and slew him and cut off his head therewith.
- 40:09When the Philistine saw their champion was dead, they fled.
- 40:13I don't know if you've ever wondered why the Lord had David cut the Philistine's head off.
- 40:21And if you have, you may have multiple different ideas as to why that is.
- 40:25I've thought about it long and hard and many times.
- 40:29I believe from every fiber of my heart that David cut the Philistine's head
- 40:33off because he was showing that the Lord doesn't work through your head.
- 40:38Because if he'd have worked through the head, the Philistine would have kept
- 40:42his head and he would have prevailed.
- 40:44But he works through the heart of faith.
- 40:47He works through a heart that is fully sold out to the Lord.
- 40:51He works through a heart that loves him with his whole heart,
- 40:55their whole soul, their whole strength, and their whole might.
- 40:58The Philistine lost the battle because he only depended upon his self, symbolized by his head.
- 41:09David won the battle because he only depended upon the Lord,
- 41:14which gave him the victory and allowed him to cut off that which the devil thought was so precious.
- 41:22And everybody who saw that from the Philistine army, they fled.
- 41:27See, what your mockers and your enemies don't want you to know is that when you walk with the Lord,
- 41:36you're protected like David showed us when he took the lion out of the mouth
- 41:41and then killed the lion.
- 41:43When he took the sheep out of the mouth and killed the lion. We're protected.
- 41:48When we are walking in his ways, we are shielded.
- 41:52And two plus two doesn't have to equal four, because when God is in it, little is much.
- 41:58That problem you're facing, that need you have, it's minuscule for God to be
- 42:04able to take care of, to heal, and to deliver.
- 42:07And he's going to do exactly what is best for you. According to Jeremiah 29, 11, his plans are good.
- 42:15And to everything that's happening in your life, he's going to use for your
- 42:19good and his glory. We're told that in Romans 8, 28.
- 42:23In Romans 8, 38 and 39, he explains that nothing will separate us from the love he has for us.
- 42:30In Philippians 4, 13 and 19, he explains that he will supply our strength and
- 42:35he will supply all that we need.
- 42:38He is the good shepherd.
- 42:40And in Psalms 23, he explains that when we are in him, he leads us in a place
- 42:46of rest and that surely goodness and mercy follow us all the days of our life.
- 42:51In Psalms 91, he explains to us that he wants to hold us and cover us with his
- 42:57feathers under his mighty hand.
- 43:00Jesus loves me, this I know, from Genesis to Revelations, I'm told.
- 43:06Oh, friend, how long has it been since you met with the Lord,
- 43:13since you presented yourself said
- 43:17here am i send me since you asked him
- 43:20to increase your faith to take
- 43:22away to search you oh god and see if
- 43:25there be any wicked way in me and if there be lord lead me into the way of righteousness
- 43:29fill me with your goodness and grace in psalms 139 how long has it been since
- 43:36you stopped being what you thought was a co-pilot or even a backseat driver
- 43:41and just said, Lord, lead me.
- 43:44Get out of your head and give him your heart.
- 43:48Remember you are loved. Jesus loves you.
