Latest / Mini Scroll / LET THE GIRLS GAME: The Sexualisation of Women Characters, Gamers & Streamers in Video Games
Transcript
- 0:00As characters and gamers, women are frequently over sexualized
- 0:04by male streamers and the gaming industry.
- 0:08Even those of us who aren't totally familiar with the world
- 0:10of gaming are likely to know Lara Croft, the famed
- 0:14protagonist of the Tomb Raider franchise.
- 0:17As she navigates through jungles and ruins, she is seen sporting
- 0:20tight and revealing outfits that, to be honest, aren't
- 0:24practical at all. Laura was the brainchild of Toby
- 0:28Guard. A lead graphic artist at core.
- 0:30Design She first appeared in the video game in 1996, with Guard
- 0:35describing her as mysterious and having a sense of danger about
- 0:39her, Guard said. That she.
- 0:40Differed from other female game characters at the time who were
- 0:43quote. Basically just sex.
- 0:45Objects, but ironically, a sex symbol is exactly.
- 0:49What Lara Croft? Would become Guard later left
- 0:52the Tomb Raider franchise over concerns that Laura was becoming
- 0:55too sexualized. At one point they even changed
- 0:59the proportions of her. Figure so her.
- 1:01Breasts would appear. Bigger.
- 1:02While Laura has since been reimagined and has swapped out
- 1:05her shorts and crop top for pants and a tank top, she
- 1:09remains hypersexualized and continues to be.
- 1:11Viewed as a sex object. Even though she's.
- 1:14Actually the. Hero of the Game Ultimately,
- 1:17this skewed portrayal of women in gaming, driven by top
- 1:21industry leaders, trickles down to the broader gaming community,
- 1:25leaving many female gamers isolated, uncomfortable and
- 1:29insecure. Welcome to Let the Girls Game, a
- 1:32podcast miniseries. Where we explore.
- 1:34The history and stories of women in gaming.
- 1:37Powered by Let's. Sing I'm your host, Lauren
- 1:40Meisner, and today we're diving into an experience that is all
- 1:43too common for female gamers sexualization, and to help me
- 1:48explore. This topic today.
- 1:49I am joined by Foss, also known as Maddie.
- 1:52So for anyone who doesn't know, Foss is a 22 year old streamer
- 1:56and content. Creator, she started.
- 1:58Streaming in August 2021 and is best known for playing
- 2:01Minecraft, Fortnite and Valorant.
- 2:04In that time, Maddie has developed a strong community on
- 2:07Twitch, becoming a Twitch partner in 20/22.
- 2:11She continues to make content across Twitch, TikTok, Instagram
- 2:14and YouTube with cross-platform following of almost 2 million
- 2:18people without. Further ado welcome.
- 2:21To Maddie. Oh my God, I'm so excited to
- 2:32chat with you today. Yes we do.
- 2:33I love podcasts so this is good. Love or do you go on podcasts
- 2:37often? No, but I did study radio in
- 2:39TAFE for a while and I had a podcast with my friend while
- 2:42we're in there, so I did miss it a little bit, yeah.
- 2:44I love that. Yeah, we are a big podcasting
- 2:47company here. I'm actually doing 10 podcasts
- 2:49this week. My gosh, I'm a little bit unwell
- 2:51and busy. Yeah, literally.
- 2:53All right, so I have quite a few questions for you, obviously
- 2:57about the topic. So we're going to be talking
- 2:58about the language and culture and online gaming communities
- 3:01and gameplay and how that kind of sexualizes and stereotypes
- 3:04women in gaming. So obviously you have been
- 3:07involved in gaming for quite some time now.
- 3:10When did you first? Come to realize.
- 3:12Or have you had kind of like a come to realization moment that
- 3:16female characters and games were portrayed differently to male
- 3:19characters? It was definitely when I moved
- 3:22more away from like Minecraft and Fortnite, I would say mainly
- 3:26because I think they're aimed more at children.
- 3:28So I feel like there's especially in Minecraft, they're
- 3:30all block characters. You can't really sexualise a
- 3:32block. You know, it's a bit of a bit of
- 3:34a special thing to be able to do.
- 3:35But when I started playing Valorant specifically and
- 3:38Overwatch, like the female characters in those games are
- 3:43wildly sexualised compared to everyone else.
- 3:46Like if you look how much can I say on this, you can say.
- 3:49Whatever. OK, cool.
- 3:50Because like especially in Overwatch, like if you go and
- 3:53look at Steam reviews on Overwatch, it is all about it
- 3:56basically just being a porn game because all of the female
- 3:59characters are just so overtly sexualized.
- 4:01I'm pretty sure one of them, their butt literally got bigger
- 4:03when they altered. At one point it was a bug that
- 4:06they had to fix. But yeah, that was probably when
- 4:09my eyes were open and I was like, what the heck.
- 4:11Like, it's quite a switch. Yeah, So what are some common
- 4:15stereotypes or tropes you've noticed in the portrayal of
- 4:18female characters in video games?
- 4:21I mean, in comparison to the male characters, especially,
- 4:24like you said with Lara Croft, it's always the clothing, it's
- 4:27always the proportions. They're always that ideal
- 4:30hourglass figure that is, one, unattainable for women and two,
- 4:33just gross like. And yeah, that's, that's
- 4:38probably the biggest thing is the way they look, which then I
- 4:41guess encourages men almost to sexualize them overtly.
- 4:45Yeah. Yeah, fair enough.
- 4:47Yeah, in a profile for Forbes, they write.
- 4:50Quote female character. Representation in video games is
- 4:54lacking, with only 5% of video games showcasing female
- 4:57protagonists. Various studies reveal that
- 5:00gender stereotypes continue to prevail in video games, with
- 5:03female characters often objectified and hyper sexualized
- 5:07and when not depicted in this. Manner Female.
- 5:09Characters are often portrayed as a love interest, innocent, or
- 5:12needing to be rescued by a male character.
- 5:15Other examples of tropes, I suppose not just kind of like
- 5:18physically, but other tropes include damsel in distress,
- 5:21women as a reward, women as background decoration, but not
- 5:25actually in the plot. So how would you say that like
- 5:28thinking of those tropes and those stereotypes and how would
- 5:32I guess, how do those tropes and stereotypes in gaming make you
- 5:35feel as a woman in gaming? I mean, it's kind of anger
- 5:38inducing a little bit because it's kind of reducing us down to
- 5:41our bodies and our physicality and not who we are as people.
- 5:46Like, even when you have a female protagonist who's strong,
- 5:48like Lara Croft, as you said, they are so sexualized.
- 5:52And it's like, oh, well, you can play the game, but only because
- 5:54she's got a good butt, you know what I mean?
- 5:56Like, because that's what you get to stare at the entire time
- 5:59you play the game. But it also just, yeah, it
- 6:03really does just make women into an object, sort of, which then
- 6:07almost tells people online that you can also treat with female
- 6:10gamers as an object and treat them however you want, which is
- 6:14obviously not the case because we're humans.
- 6:16And I'm sure that contributes to a big problem.
- 6:18I mean, I understand, like women in gaming face so much
- 6:22harassment and so many issues like that.
- 6:24I'm sure this all contributes to that A. 100%.
- 6:27Have those portrayals, have they ever, I guess, impacted your
- 6:31enjoyment playing games? I guess a little bit, yeah.
- 6:35I mean, especially when I was younger playing video games,
- 6:38it's like all you want to is to see someone who looks like you
- 6:41or like a woman on the screen being about us being able to do
- 6:45all of these things. And when you're younger and you
- 6:48don't have that representation on screen, I guess it's it's
- 6:51kind of hard to believe that you are more than just an object or
- 6:54more than just what a stereotypical woman should be.
- 6:58And then, yeah, even growing up, it's kind of like you have to
- 7:00change your own mindset and be like, it's just a video game at
- 7:03the end of the day. Like a woman can do what they
- 7:04want, but it's still hard to have that nailed in you every
- 7:07day, especially if you were an avid gamer.
- 7:10Exactly for sure. Are there any specific examples
- 7:13of female characters in games that you feel challenge those
- 7:17traditional stereotypes that we've seen?
- 7:20Well, that's a good question. I honestly would say a lot of
- 7:23the character, I know I said like in Valorant they are
- 7:25sexualized, but I do think there are some characters in Valorant
- 7:28who aren't which do go against it, such as like Sage is not, I
- 7:34would say, overtly sexualized physically, although she is a
- 7:38hero. So, you know, everyone's like,
- 7:39Oh yeah, Debbie's just to heal everyone.
- 7:41But yeah, I do only really play a lot of Valorant and Fortnite
- 7:46generally. So there's not a whole lot that
- 7:47I think I can personally speak on that for.
- 7:49Yeah, For, but yeah. Do you remember?
- 7:52I think it was a couple of years ago, there was so much discourse
- 7:56on Twitter when the protagonist for Horizon 0 Dawn came out and
- 8:02she had like Peach fuzz and like looked like a normal woman.
- 8:05Do you remember that? That was actually like horrific
- 8:07to to watch how people were talking about her and like men
- 8:10were so angry. That she like about.
- 8:12Like a regular. Person literally yeah.
- 8:14They're like, how dare you not look like my ideal woman.
- 8:17God, why would I choose to play you?
- 8:19It's like, dude, there are such bigger issues in the world.
- 8:22Like it just take chill pill, sit down.
- 8:24Yeah. No, I think that it was
- 8:25definitely an eye opening moment.
- 8:27I mean, hopefully for the industry, but I think it was a
- 8:29good like a good start to some change I think as well.
- 8:34So I'm curious how you decide which character to choose when
- 8:38you're playing. I mean, I don't go off looks or
- 8:42anything like that. I go off ability and what sort
- 8:44of coincides with my ability in video games.
- 8:46I'm not necessarily very good at video games.
- 8:49I'm not known for being skilled at them.
- 8:50So I kind of just pick one character and depending on
- 8:53ability, but yeah, it's never really looks or anything like
- 8:57that. I go off their strength or stuff
- 9:00like that. I will say when I first started
- 9:03playing games, it was I would always play a female character
- 9:06because that was just, I saw myself on the screen.
- 9:08You know what I mean? You wouldn't pick a male
- 9:10character. But if you want to identify
- 9:13with. Her.
- 9:13Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 9:15So yeah, I actually did have the Lara Croft games.
- 9:19So have you noticed any gendered language while streaming or
- 9:23watching streams by women gamers?
- 9:26And the reason why I ask that is because according to a 2017
- 9:29study from the University of Indiana academics, the average
- 9:33female streamer on Twitch is more likely to receive
- 9:35objectifying comments about their appearance compared to
- 9:37their male counterparts. Male streamers tend to receive
- 9:41comments around games, game play on the other hand.
- 9:44What's your experience been with that?
- 9:46Duh, yeah. I mean, as a streamer, you sort
- 9:48of like have to expect that you're going to have people
- 9:50harassing you. But it's, which is kind of
- 9:53depressing to be honest, to say that.
- 9:55But it's definitely most of the harassment has always been on
- 9:59how I look, which is really weird.
- 10:02Yeah, Well, because, but there's already that toxic thing in
- 10:05gaming that women aren't good at gaming.
- 10:07So it's like, you can say I'm shit, but I'll be like, yeah,
- 10:09well, yes, I am. Thank you.
- 10:10Thank you for putting that out. But I'll be wearing a hoodie and
- 10:15I'll have someone come in to try and be like nice tits.
- 10:17And it's like, how? Where are you getting that from?
- 10:20You know what I mean? They just say it to get a
- 10:22reaction. Like I once had a chatter come
- 10:25in, start harassing me on my appearance.
- 10:27So I obviously banned them and then they started sending me
- 10:30donors because they read text to speech into my stream.
- 10:33So they basically started paying me to say derogatory things to
- 10:36me. So I was like, I mean, pay up,
- 10:38but also like, that's a lot of dedication, so.
- 10:42Those are just things that, like men, would probably not have to.
- 10:44Experience not necessarily like I have a lot of really, really
- 10:47good male gamer friends and like, I mean people don't come
- 10:51in and be like, hey, nice penis like that's.
- 10:52Just what? People do like, you know what I
- 10:54mean? It's always been like, dude,
- 10:56you're shit at the game. And they're like, OK, thanks,
- 10:59Thanks, I guess. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:01No, it's very, very rarely sexual harassment.
- 11:04Yeah, yeah. And how does that make you feel?
- 11:06Is that difficult to deal with or are you used to it now?
- 11:09I mean, it's kind of sad to say I'm used to it, but like after a
- 11:13certain amount of time you kind of grow a thicker skin towards
- 11:18some of those sort of, I want to say like lighter comments, but
- 11:20there's definitely worse ones you can get where it's like, OK,
- 11:24I'm quitting, I'm turning off the stream.
- 11:25I can't get through that anymore.
- 11:28So I say I'm I'm pretty good at dealing with a lot of it.
- 11:31I'm pretty tough with a lot of it, mainly because I just have
- 11:34good comebacks and it's like, oh, I can make this funny good
- 11:36content. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:37But like it's when they get to the really dark sort of just not
- 11:41even banter anymore. It's like threatening you that
- 11:43it's not OK and that like starts to get you, especially when it's
- 11:47over and over and over again. You really start yourself worth
- 11:50just like plummets. A little bit, yeah, Absolutely.
- 11:52Yeah. Do you have a community of other
- 11:55women that game that you can kind of like talk with about
- 11:58this and support each other? Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 12:01I definitely have. Like I definitely have a closer
- 12:03community of women because of Maybelline's.
- 12:05I don't know if you know Maybelline's.
- 12:06Yeah, I did, yeah. So their eyes up tournament and
- 12:09stuff like that, obviously I worked with them pretty closely
- 12:12and it was really great to meet a lot of other female gamers
- 12:14who, you know, have the same experiences as you because you
- 12:16can kind of chat and talk about it and it just, it just helps to
- 12:20sort of vent sometimes to get that out.
- 12:23And yeah, I've also had in like Discord chats as well, like
- 12:26people asking for advice. They've been like, hey, this
- 12:29person said this in my chat, is this a bannable thing?
- 12:31Should I just ban them? And then it's been like, do it,
- 12:33just ban them, get it over with. It's all good.
- 12:35So it's been nice to have people like, we're almost like sisters
- 12:39to each other, giving each other advice and stuff.
- 12:41It's been, it's been nice like, yeah, one of my really good
- 12:45friends went through a really, really horrible situation on
- 12:47Twitter. And it was like there was some
- 12:49really, really horrible things in the Twitter comments,
- 12:51obviously. But it was also nice to see the
- 12:53community sort of rise up around her and be like, well, this
- 12:55isn't OK. Like let's when we can't say
- 12:58this and say it's banter and say that that's OK.
- 13:00Yeah. So yeah, there's definitely a
- 13:02community of us all supporting each other, which is a little
- 13:05bit. Helpful for sure.
- 13:06That's so great. Do you think?
- 13:07That platforms have a responsibility to address
- 13:10gendered language and promote more inclusive streaming
- 13:12environments, Yeah. Yeah, 100%.
- 13:14I feel like, honestly, I would go so far as to say that if a
- 13:18platform or a game isn't taking the most measures they can to
- 13:23stop women being harassed and literally threatened online,
- 13:26then they're complicit because you have the ability, You have
- 13:30the ability to stand up and say this isn't OK and you're
- 13:32choosing to stay quiet, to stay out of controversy.
- 13:35And it's like, hey, this isn't controversy.
- 13:36This is women's safety and women's rights.
- 13:38Like, what are you doing? Yeah.
- 13:41So 100%, I think that it's great that a lot of companies who are
- 13:45very female based have sort of spoken up about it.
- 13:48I think that now male, more male based companies need to also
- 13:52take a stand and actually speak to the guys and be like, hey,
- 13:55men, this isn't OK because it's not all men.
- 13:57But 99% of the time, yeah, it is men for sure.
- 14:01And just encouraging guys to hold their friends accountable
- 14:03and say that, you know, this sort of banter and this sort of
- 14:05treatment of other people is not OK.
- 14:07Yeah, and I think that's one of the biggest problems.
- 14:09We don't just see it in gaming. We see it across the board with
- 14:12like moderation on social media, right?
- 14:15It's like until the platforms, until there's like literally
- 14:18laws in place, they're not going to do anything about it because
- 14:20it's going to cost so much money for them to implement proper
- 14:23moderation across the board that why would they do that in their
- 14:27minds? Why would we do this until we
- 14:29absolutely have to? And unfortunately, the people
- 14:31who make the laws and all these regulations have no idea what
- 14:34the fuck is going on. Yes, exactly.
- 14:36And it's so silly because they'll be like, oh, yes, we've
- 14:39noticed this is happening, and we recognize that it's
- 14:41happening. And then that's where it ends.
- 14:42And then they'll be like, but also here's an update that no
- 14:44one asks for. And it's like, dude, come on.
- 14:48Literally, I'm like, we're all begging to just be treated with
- 14:51respect. Yeah.
- 14:52And like, actual equality, Not, oh, this is equality.
- 14:56Yeah. So companies and games and video
- 14:58games have a responsibility to stand up for women as well.
- 15:01Yeah. Absolutely.
- 15:02Well, thank you so much, Maddie. This was me.
- 15:04So great to hear kind of a little bit about your
- 15:07perspective on the industry and your journey.
- 15:10Where can people find you? Plug whatever you want.
- 15:15Everything on most platforms I'm just OG and then Foss PHOS.
- 15:21On Twitch I'm just Foss. So yeah, awesome.
- 15:24Thank you so much. Thank you so much to Maddie for
- 15:28speaking with me today. Thank you to Let's Sing for
- 15:30powering this mini series and thank you to you for listening
- 15:34to Let the Girls Game TuneIn next week for our.
- 15:37Last episode. Of this miniseries where we look
- 15:41to the future of women in gaming.
