- 0:01Jeremiah chapter 2. Dear Lord, please open our minds
- 0:06and let us receive what you intended by giving this
- 0:11information in scripture for us in the Bible we ask this in
- 0:15Jesus name. My study Bible says Israel
- 0:20forsakes God. That's the title given to this
- 0:22chapter. The word of the Lord came to me.
- 0:27Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem.
- 0:31This is what the Lord says. I remember the devotion of your
- 0:35youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the
- 0:40wilderness, through a land not sown.
- 0:44Israel was holy to the Lord, the first fruits of His harvest.
- 0:49All who devoured her were held guilty and disaster overtook
- 0:53them, declares the Lord. So right there there's this
- 0:59really sounds a lot like what's in Revelation also in when Jesus
- 1:06it has when John has the vision and Jesus is there and he says
- 1:11to give a message to the churches and there's seven
- 1:14churches that he gives messages to.
- 1:16And this sounds very much like, I remember your original
- 1:20devotion and things have changed.
- 1:22He gives that message to the churches also.
- 1:26So God is the same today as he was.
- 1:29He doesn't change. And humanity does the same
- 1:33things over and over again as repeated through history.
- 1:37The Bible documents all of that. So we can learn from the
- 1:42mistakes that our ancestors made when we read the Bible, and we
- 1:47can learn from what God says about it.
- 1:50So here's what the study Bible says.
- 1:52How could Jeremiah get Oh, actually that was for chapter 1.
- 1:56So chapter 2, why did Jeremiah use so many disconnected images?
- 2:02Well, we haven't gotten to that yet, but I will read this.
- 2:05Why did Jeremiah mix together images of brides, polluted land,
- 2:10cisterns, runaway slaves, prostitutes, and she camels in
- 2:14heat? Probably because no single image
- 2:18could adequately express the depths of Judah sin, Jeremiah
- 2:24used many symbols, possibly delivered on separate occasions,
- 2:28but later collected together, each one picturing a different
- 2:33facet of the nation's deliberate unfaithfulness to God.
- 2:37God had made a covenant with Israel which the people had
- 2:41broken in the ways Jeremiah had described.
- 2:45How was Israel holy and 1st fruits of God's harvest?
- 2:50Holy means set apart for special use.
- 2:54Israel was chosen by God, set apart as the nation through
- 2:59which all nations would be blessed.
- 3:02And like the first vegetation harvest brought in during the
- 3:05harvest, Israel would be the First Nation among many to
- 3:10receive God's special blessings. Israel is still God's chosen.
- 3:17There are some in the Christian world who say otherwise today.
- 3:23And there is this like anti-Semitism that's going
- 3:26around the world right now. And the Bible predicts that as
- 3:28well. And but we just need to stay
- 3:31grounded in the word of God and not go along.
- 3:35If we see the whole world going after something, the majority of
- 3:38people are going in agreement on something which we are seeing,
- 3:41we are seeing the majority of the world coming against Israel.
- 3:46And that's when we know if the whole world is doing it, it's
- 3:52probably not in alignment with God because typically the whole
- 3:56world does not follow the ways of God.
- 3:59And God still has chosen Israel. Israel is not perfect, just like
- 4:04every single one of us is not perfect.
- 4:06And so it doesn't mean that God condones everything.
- 4:09When we go through this book of or this chapter of Jeremiah, it
- 4:13talks about how God is really disgusted by what they did.
- 4:18And God gets disgusted by what we do in our life at times as
- 4:22well. But the point isn't so much, I
- 4:25mean, it's it's pointing out like here's what you're doing,
- 4:28but it's pointing out the holiness of God, what God wants
- 4:31for each and every one of us and how we just like Israel, do bad
- 4:39things to God. And and it's, you know, it's
- 4:43just a wake up time for all of us to really reflect on our own
- 4:47lives. We can't control anyone else.
- 4:50So why don't we just look at our own lives and see what do we
- 4:54need to do to be more like who God created us to be?
- 5:00So anyway, I'll go back to what it says here.
- 5:05Let's see. I'll read one more question and
- 5:07answer, and then I'll continue in the scripture.
- 5:10Why were people attracted to worshipping idols?
- 5:13They probably believed that a God, a spiritual being, resided
- 5:19within each idol. But there have been many other,
- 5:23more practical concerns to stay on good terms with their
- 5:27Assyrian overlords. For example, the people of Judah
- 5:31had imported Assyrian idols. Thus, Josiah's decree against
- 5:35worshipping false gods was seen as more than a religious act.
- 5:40It was also a sign of political independence.
- 5:44Other popular practices, such as the fertility cults with their
- 5:49prostitutes appealed to the people's immoral desires.
- 5:54So of course the this'll this is, I don't know, they're that's
- 6:01always the weapon of choice. It seems like these appealing to
- 6:05the people's immoral desires. People have those desires, and
- 6:10when you can put those desires forth and say they're all good
- 6:15and out of context, then you can sway people to rebel against
- 6:22God. And that's what the enemy does.
- 6:26And we can see this here again. So it says, hear, hear the word
- 6:31of the Lord, You descendants of Jacob, all you clans of Israel,
- 6:35this is what the Lord says. What fault did your ancestors
- 6:39find in me that they strayed so far from me?
- 6:43That's a good question. Like why?
- 6:45Why do we go against God when God is good and he does good
- 6:49things for us and he promises us a future, an inheritance, you
- 6:56know, why is it that we rebel against him?
- 6:59It's a question we all should ask ourselves.
- 7:01They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.
- 7:07They did not ask where is the Lord who brought us up out of
- 7:11Egypt and LED us through the barren wilderness, through a
- 7:15land of deserts and ravines, a land of drought and utter
- 7:18darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives.
- 7:23So again, seeking God. There was a lack of seeking God.
- 7:27All of a sudden, you know, when things are going well, a lot of
- 7:30times we don't think about God. It's like when we get brought
- 7:33down low, that's when we start thinking about God again.
- 7:36And he's seeing that in Israel at this time, He was seeing that
- 7:41nobody's even seeking him. I brought you into a fertile
- 7:46land to eat its fruit and rich produce, but you came and
- 7:51defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable.
- 7:57So taking something that is good that God gave and making it
- 8:02detestable, like doing things that God forbid, you know, like
- 8:06Jesus said, you know, what are the great 2 greatest
- 8:09commandments and #1 is love God Two, love your love people or
- 8:15love your neighbor. Those are the 2 greatest
- 8:17commandments. And the word love has been
- 8:21distorted by the world, by culture where people don't even
- 8:26know what love means. And God is love.
- 8:30And then Jesus said, if you love me, obey my commands.
- 8:34So somehow in our world, we don't, we no longer associate
- 8:39obedience to God's command as showing God's God love.
- 8:43All of a sudden we just like get into this rebellious place in
- 8:47the world where it's like, no, we don't need to obey his
- 8:51commands. That's being legalistic really.
- 8:55I mean, we just like we need to be in the word of God and
- 8:59reflect on what the word of God says.
- 9:02That's what happened with the the kings of Israel when in
- 9:07Deuteronomy you can read that the king of Israel was supposed
- 9:12to read from, I guess what I don't know if it was called the
- 9:16Torah at that time, but the books that Moses wrote, he was
- 9:19supposed to read on those daily. And you can see that Solomon
- 9:23didn't do that. That was what Solomon was
- 9:25supposed to do and he didn't do that.
- 9:28And then also it's reflected when you get to Josiah, I think
- 9:33he was, he was a young person, a young king, and all of a sudden
- 9:36he finds all these commands and things that they were supposed
- 9:39to be doing that they hadn't done, I don't know, probably for
- 9:42hundreds of years. And so then he repented on
- 9:46behalf of all of Israel and was, you know, saying we need to get
- 9:51back to God. Well, I, I don't know if that's
- 9:54where we are today too, is that, you know, we do have this
- 9:59generally worldly view that I, I hear it from people coming out
- 10:04of people's mouths who say they're Christians where, you
- 10:08know, we don't have to the, we don't have to obey God's
- 10:11commands. You know, we just, we're covered
- 10:13by grace and and I don't believe that's true.
- 10:19Yes, we will mess up here and there, but we're not going to
- 10:22keep on sinning because all you have to do is go to Hebrews
- 10:27chapter 10, verse 26, where it says basically, if you keep on
- 10:31sinning and you know you're doing that, then the only thing
- 10:35that you should expect from God is judgement.
- 10:38And it also calls that person an enemy of God.
- 10:41And it says that they're going to be going into the, I think
- 10:44the, I don't know, the lake of fire or the gnashing of teeth,
- 10:47Whatever the description that is in the Bible, it's pretty much
- 10:51like what hell is described as or eternal separation from God.
- 10:55That's what it describes. So be leery of anybody who
- 11:00emphasizes too much grace to cover up sin.
- 11:05Yes, it is there for the incidental, you know, I made a
- 11:10mistake kind of sin, but not for the habitual.
- 11:14I'm just going to keep on going because thank God for grace.
- 11:18That is an abuse of Jesus's death on the cross.
- 11:22It's disrespectful to God to think that.
- 11:26So anyway, God dealt with it back then and in in what we're
- 11:31reading right now, and he'll deal with it again in the
- 11:34future. But we need to wake up to the
- 11:37reality of what's in Scripture and not live our lives according
- 11:42to what the world says. But what God says, the priest
- 11:46did not ask. Where is the Lord?
- 11:49Those who deal with the law did not know me.
- 11:53The leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal
- 11:59following worthless idols. This one stood out to me because
- 12:04think about this. The prophets prophesied by Baal
- 12:10following worthless idols. So the prophets were getting
- 12:14information from who? Baal.
- 12:18Baal, that's a, that's a spiritual thing.
- 12:21That's the word for Lord. And it's not God.
- 12:24It's not the God. And it's just like Elijah when
- 12:28he was saying Lord, there's, you know, no one that is with me.
- 12:32All of these others, there were people prophesying and they were
- 12:35prophesying because of Baal and Elijah.
- 12:41All right, yeah. Elijah had a showdown with them
- 12:43and said, you know, let your God, you know, light this fire.
- 12:47And then he proved who the true God was.
- 12:51And because he doused this place that they were going to sacr,
- 12:56make a sacrifice on Elijah did and he doused it with water and
- 13:00he called on God and the fire consumed the water and the
- 13:04sacrifice. His sacrifice was the only
- 13:07sacrifice that worked. The other prophets, and there
- 13:10were thousands of them are hundreds of them.
- 13:12There were a lot of them that were prophets of Baal and and it
- 13:17was a showdown. It was like who's who's God is
- 13:20the real God. So they were really struggling
- 13:23with this. And again to in support of how I
- 13:28came to this theory that, you know, there is this evil entity
- 13:31that is behind so much of these other religion things that do
- 13:36not name that do not accept Jesus is because this is what
- 13:42happened in the past. They there were spiritual
- 13:46entities that I mean, even the study Bible says as there were
- 13:50spiritual entities probably that presented themselves as
- 13:53something supernatural, as something godly and caused
- 13:57people to worship them to turn away from God.
- 14:01And and these people were even getting information prophecies
- 14:07by bell. So it's, it's just, you know,
- 14:13how deceptive, that's what I guess I take away from this is
- 14:17how deceptive the enemy can be and how ignorant people can be
- 14:21to not see the deception. And it's just like open your
- 14:26eyes because the enemy is still at work.
- 14:28The enemy is still trying to get us.
- 14:30But we don't have to be fearful. All we have to do is turn to
- 14:33God, to the true God. And God is our protection.
- 14:38We trust in him. We don't have any fear of
- 14:41anything else. And it's just a matter of we
- 14:46need to turn to God. And thankfully, we're actually
- 14:49seeing a lot of that today as a result of some horrific things
- 14:53that have happened. People do seem to be turning
- 14:57towards God. And I just hope that that
- 14:58continues and that people stay close to God because I think we
- 15:02are in really critical times where deception is really high,
- 15:08a very high level with technology that we have.
- 15:12And I think we need to be grounded in the word of God and
- 15:15truly know God. It does say in Scripture that
- 15:19when Jesus returns, he will say to some, I never knew you.
- 15:24And they will even say that they prophesied in his name.
- 15:27So they were, you know, saying in Jesus name, they were
- 15:30prophesying, but they weren't hearing from Jesus.
- 15:33So I think we actually see some evidence of that in the world
- 15:37today with some things that have recently happened.
- 15:41So it's just a word of warning to make sure that you are close
- 15:46to God and another just stay in the word of God.
- 15:51And anyway, let's just get back to Scripture and the study
- 15:55Bible. So it continues in Scripture.
- 15:58Therefore, I will bring charges against you again, declares the
- 16:02Lord, and I will bring charges against your children's
- 16:05children. Crossover to the coast of Cyprus
- 16:09and look, send to Kedar and observe closely.
- 16:12See if there has ever been anything like this.
- 16:15Has a nation ever changed its gods?
- 16:19Yet they are not gods at all, but My people have exchanged
- 16:23their glorious God for worthless idols.
- 16:26Be appalled at this you heavens, and shudder with great horror
- 16:32declares the Lord. My people have committed 2 sins.
- 16:36They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have
- 16:41dug their own cistern, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
- 16:47Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth?
- 16:51Why then has he become plunder? Lions have roared, they have
- 16:56growled at him, they have laid waste his land.
- 16:59His towns are burned and deserted.
- 17:01Also the men of Memphis and Tapanos have cracked your skull.
- 17:07Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the Lord
- 17:11your God when He led you in this in the way?
- 17:16So this is something else that I think we should pay attention
- 17:18to. Have you not brought this on
- 17:20yourselves by forsaking the Lord your God when he led you in the
- 17:26way? So God shows us the way when we
- 17:30forsake him, when we turn away from him and do our way, not his
- 17:34way, we can we bring on disaster.
- 17:37I mean, that's like, if you want to learn something from
- 17:40Scripture, it's really clear that when you turn away from
- 17:44God, there will be God's trying to get you to come back to him.
- 17:49So there's going to be some hardships that come your way.
- 17:53So it's really clear in Scripture and people don't see
- 17:56it. And I think the study Bible kind
- 17:58of addresses that too. Now, why go to Egypt to drink
- 18:02from the Nile? And why go to Assyria to drink
- 18:06from the Euphrates? Your wickedness will punish you.
- 18:11Your backsliding will rebuke you.
- 18:15Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you
- 18:20when you forsake the Lord your God and have no awe of me.
- 18:26You know, like the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- 18:29When people are in their rebellion, they don't have any
- 18:31fear of God. They're like, I'm fine.
- 18:34And that's the same. That's what Israel was like.
- 18:37They didn't think there was anything wrong.
- 18:39And then they probably wonder, like, why are these bad things
- 18:41happening to me, declares the Lord the Almighty.
- 18:46Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your buns.
- 18:50You said, I will not serve you. Indeed, on every high hill and
- 18:55under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute, I had
- 19:00planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock.
- 19:04How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, vile vine?
- 19:09What a corrupt wild vine. Although you wash yourself with
- 19:14soap and use an abundance of cleansing powder, the stain of
- 19:19your guilt is still before me, declares the sovereign Lord.
- 19:23How can you say I am not defiled?
- 19:26I have not run after the bales. See how you have behaved in the
- 19:30valley. Consider what you have done.
- 19:33You are a swift she camel running here and there, a wild
- 19:37donkey, accustomed to the desert, sniffing the wind in her
- 19:42craving, in her heat, who can restrain her.
- 19:46Any male that pursues her need not tire themselves at mating
- 19:50time. They will find her.
- 19:52Do not run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry.
- 19:56But you said it's no use. I love foreign gods, and I must
- 20:00go after them. As a thief is disgraced when he
- 20:04is caught, so the people of Israel are disgraced.
- 20:08They their kings and their officials, their priests and
- 20:11their prophets. They say to Wood you are my
- 20:14father, and to Stone you gave me birth.
- 20:18They have turned their backs to me and not their faces.
- 20:22Yet when they are in trouble they say come and save us.
- 20:28Where then are the gods you made for yourselves?
- 20:32Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble.
- 20:36For you, Judah, have so have as many gods as you have towns.
- 20:42Why do you bring charges against me?
- 20:45You have all rebelled against me, declares the Lord.
- 20:49In vain I punished your people. They did not respond to
- 20:54correction. Your sword has devoured your
- 20:58prophets like a ravenous lion. You of this generation, consider
- 21:04the word of the Lord. Have I been a desert to Israel
- 21:08or a land of great darkness? Why do my people say we are free
- 21:13to roam, we will come to you no more.
- 21:17Does a young woman forget her jewelry, a bride, her wedding
- 21:21ornaments, Yet my people have forgotten me?
- 21:24Days without number. How skilled you are at pursuing
- 21:28love. Even the worst of women can
- 21:31learn from your ways. On your clothes is found the
- 21:35life, the lifeblood of the innocent poor, though you did
- 21:39not catch them breaking in. Yet in spite of all of this, you
- 21:43say I am innocent. He is not angry with me, but I
- 21:47will pass judgement on you because you say I have not
- 21:51sinned. Why do you go about so much
- 21:55changing your ways? You will be disappointed by
- 21:59Egypt as you were by Assyria. You will also leave that place
- 22:04with your hands on your head. For the Lord has rejected those
- 22:09you trust. You will not be helped by them.
- 22:14And that's the end of chapter 2. So I'll read the questions and
- 22:17answers and then we'll finish this.
- 22:20So why did God accuse innocent grandchildren?
- 22:27This probably expresses the idea that Judah sins would have long
- 22:30lasting consequences affecting generations to come.
- 22:33This was in fact, exactly what happened.
- 22:36Judah was exiled for multiple generations.
- 22:41It could mean that just as God would contend with the present
- 22:44generation of sinners, He would also contend with future
- 22:48generations of sinners. Why would anyone choose a
- 22:52cistern over a fresh spring? This was Jeremiah's point
- 22:55precisely. In the parched land of Israel,
- 22:58cool spring water was extremely rare and highly valued.
- 23:02Most people had to use cisterns hewed out of rock to store
- 23:05water. Despite their value, cisterns
- 23:07presented challenges. They could leak, their limited
- 23:10supply could run dry, and they could be polluted by bugs or
- 23:14carcasses. No one would deliberately choose
- 23:19a cistern if a clean spring with freshwater were available.
- 23:23Yet Judah and deserting God had abandoned A gushing spring of
- 23:27living water for a leaking cistern.
- 23:31Who were the lions that had roared?
- 23:33The lion was a symbol of power and ferocity.
- 23:36The roaring lions mentioned here probably refer to Assyria, the
- 23:39dominant nation of the time. The dominant nation of the time,
- 23:44Assyria invaded the northern nation of Israel, destroying it
- 23:48in 722 BC. It's ominous, threatening roars
- 23:53could still be heard in nearby Judah when Jeremiah prophesied a
- 23:58century later. Why did these men crack the
- 24:01skull of Israel? Memphis and Tapanus, cities of
- 24:07ancient Egypt, symbolized the whole nation of Egypt, just as
- 24:12Washington, DC is understood in certain contexts to represent
- 24:16the United States. This passage possibly describes
- 24:21Josiah's humiliating defeat at the hands of the Egyptian under
- 24:26Nikko in six O 9 BC, and you can find that in Second Kings
- 24:31chapter 23. How good was ancient hygiene?
- 24:36Pretty good. Soda or sodium bicarbonate or
- 24:40more cost or more. Caustic sodium hydroxide, known
- 24:46as Lye, can be found in natural deposits much like rock salt.
- 24:51Since ancient times, soda has been used for cleaning,
- 24:55including dissolving grease and eliminating odors.
- 24:58Soda, made by combining fats with ashes, was used to wash
- 25:03away oils which attract dirt. Jeremiah's point was simply that
- 25:08the best cleaning agents available cannot remove the
- 25:11stains of sin. What had they done in the
- 25:15valley? This was exact.
- 25:17This was likely Jeremiah's way of recalling the people's
- 25:20participation in various Pagan rituals.
- 25:23Child sacrifice and other detestable practices were
- 25:27carried out in the valley of Ben Hinnom, just outside Jerusalem.
- 25:32Or the phrase might have been simply used simply to set the
- 25:37scene for the following metaphor of the She camel.
- 25:42How had the people behave like a wild donkey?
- 25:44A wild donkey in heat behaves erratically, chasing after male
- 25:50donkeys in a violent and uncontrolled manner and is
- 25:53unable to be restrained in her lustful state.
- 25:58As vulgar as this image may be, it vividly describes Judah's
- 26:03unbridled lust for other gods, which she act actively pursued
- 26:09with no regard for the Lord. She had become uncontrollable
- 26:13and irrational for getting the past goodness the Lord had shown
- 26:17her. Why did the people bring charges
- 26:20against God? They probably blamed God for not
- 26:23protecting them from defeat in their recent battle against
- 26:27Egypt. They may have also been accusing
- 26:29God of neglecting Judah and permitting the nation to be made
- 26:33subject to Assyria. But God answered Judah's charges
- 26:38with his own charge. You have all rebelled against
- 26:42me. What had Judah done to the poor?
- 26:46Innocent lives were being lost, probably as a result of social
- 26:50injustice or perhaps due to the practice of child sacrifice.
- 26:54There was no defense for such atrocities.
- 26:58Why does it matter that they did not catch them breaking in?
- 27:02The blood staining Judas clothes showed that the nation had taken
- 27:06part in violence. If the bloodshed had been the
- 27:10result of burglary, then they would have been acute.
- 27:13Then they could not have been accused of murder because they
- 27:18had killed in self-defense. The point is that Judah had no
- 27:22justification for her actions and was deserving of the Lord's
- 27:27wrath despite her claims of innocence.
- 27:31How had Judah been disappointed? In the past, on more than one
- 27:34occasion, Judah had looked to other nations, including
- 27:37Assyria, for political and military support, only to be
- 27:42betrayed by those they had hoped would help them.
- 27:46God wanted His people to trust Him, not the military powers of
- 27:53foreign nations. Guess we can all learn from that
- 27:56too, that we just should all trust in God, in everything, in
- 28:01every aspect of our lives. And that concludes Chapter 2.
