Speaker 1: Here's your hosts Mark Lewis, david Burgess and Pastor Grant Stegall.
• 0:16
Speaker 2: Welcome to the Midweek Motivation Podcast for February 19th here at DeSoto Hills Baptist Church.
• 0:23
Speaker 2: I'm Mark Lewis, I'm Grant Stegall and we hope this programming can encourage folks throughout DeSoto County and beyond.
• 0:29
Speaker 2: Be sure to subscribe and share our link on social media.
• 0:33
Speaker 2: We always start the podcast with some important things coming up here at the church I always mention we don't always have a lot of time in our regular programming on Sundays and Wednesdays to talk about all this stuff in depth, so we choose this platform here to talk about some of that stuff.
• 0:50
Speaker 2: We've got that preteen retreat coming up in a few weeks, on February the 28th and March 1st.
• 0:55
Speaker 2: That is Disciple Now for our children.
• 0:58
Speaker 2: It is an incredible event, grant.
• 1:01
Speaker 2: You've had all but one of your children, I guess, go through the pre-teen retreat before.
• 1:06
Speaker 2: Yep, um, we basically have, like the vbs band, really a really great band, good speaker, uh, the kids come up here on friday night.
• 1:14
Speaker 2: They, they get to eat, they get to play games.
• 1:17
  Speaker 2: It's, it's a lot of fun.
• 1:19
Speaker 3: They have a lot of fun.
• 1:20
Speaker 2: All of my kids have loved it yes, and we do programming on saturday morning.
• 1:24
Speaker 2: You'll pick your child up around lunchtime, so it's not going to take up your whole weekend, but it will give you and your wife or you and your husband a good chance to go out on a date Friday night with no kids.
• 1:36
Speaker 2: So you need to sign up for that now, though, because that registration is going to close quickly in the next week.
• 1:43
Speaker 2: March 9th Grant wanted us to remind everybody.
• 1:46
Speaker 2: March 9th is coming up.
• 1:47
Speaker 2: That is Daylight Savings Time Boy.
• 1:49
Speaker 2: They have really squashed Daylight Savings.
• 1:51
  Speaker 3: Yes, they have.
• 1:52
Speaker 3: I'm fine if they do away with it.
• 1:55
Speaker 2: Yes, and that was one of the things, politically, that I had heard might happen in the future.
• 2:02
Speaker 3: It's been talked about before, that's one thing that's bipartisan for sure.
• 2:06
Speaker 1: Everybody seems to want to get rid of that.
• 2:09
Speaker 2: So I would not expect us.
• 2:11
Speaker 2: I mean, we're going back to daylight savings, but this may be the last time.
• 2:15
Speaker 2: We'll just have to see.
• 2:16
Speaker 3: All right, spring forward that day.
• 2:18
Speaker 3: Spring forward, fall back.
• 2:19
  Speaker 3: Spring forward.
• 2:20
Speaker 3: Yes, you're going to lose an hour.
• 2:23
Speaker 2: We want to shoot way off in the calendar just a little bit, because we want you to save these dates and be aware of them.
• 2:28
Speaker 2: April 6th is the Grand Prix.
• 2:31
Speaker 2: Okay, this thing, second annual.
• 2:34
Speaker 2: This thing is so much fun and people have absolutely gone nuts over it in just the one time we did it and so explain to everybody.
• 2:50
  Speaker 3: It's a derby race.
• 2:50
  Speaker 3: It's a derby race.
• 2:50
Speaker 3: You get a block of wood and you, your child, your child, gets to carve and make a car out of it.
• 2:56
Speaker 3: Um, I mean, it comes in a car and a you buy a kit.
• 3:00
Speaker 3: So when you pay the money to, to laura, it gets the wood block, wheels, everything you would need to make it, except for paint and stuff.
• 3:11
Speaker 3: And then laura has a work day a week before the, the the grand prix.
• 3:17
Speaker 3: So the grand prix is on the 6th.
• 3:18
Speaker 3: So the week before that um, she had on Saturday you can come up here and work on your car, and then the day before the race, she typically lets you come up here and run your car on the track just to test it, to make sure it works and if there's a few little modifications.
• 3:37
Speaker 3: So she does a lot to help you get ready.
• 3:39
Speaker 3: And then that night, yeah, it's the car.
• 3:43
Speaker 3: You put them on those tracks and let them go.
• 3:45
Speaker 3: And, man, it's a lot of fun.
• 3:48
Speaker 2: You pay that fee, you get that car and then, when your child destroys it and messes it up, you get to go to Hobby Lobby and rebuy all the parts to fix it right here.
• 3:59
Speaker 2: This dad had to do that last year and then I was a little bit tardy getting in there last year because we did have the sunday night service.
• 4:08
Speaker 2: Um, at the same time this year we will just be having the grand prix, but it was very evident to see all the dads hovering very close to the track with the children they were.
• 4:19
Speaker 2: It seemed like they were invested quite heavily into seeing how those races came out.
• 4:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, because I'm sure a lot of them were heavily invested in the building.
• 4:28
  Speaker 3: That's what we're saying.
• 4:29
Speaker 3: We're not saying it.
• 4:32
Speaker 1: We're saying it but we're not saying it.
• 4:34
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 4:37
Speaker 2: April 13th we have a churchwide Easter egg hunt.
• 4:40
Speaker 3: Now is that in the afternoon evening on that Sunday it's going to be at 2.
• 4:44
Speaker 3: And so to give you time to go get some lunch and come back, and it won't be all the kids together, like Miss Bonnie will have a preschool area and Laura will have a children's area.
• 4:58
Speaker 3: So big kids won't be trampling small kids.
• 4:59
Speaker 3: Typically they've done that, you know deer in a Wana or something like that.
• 5:03
Speaker 3: But since we're not doing a Wana on Sunday nights, they're going to do it on a Sunday afternoon.
• 5:09
  Speaker 3: We've tried before.
• 5:10
Speaker 3: Before they started doing a WANA, we tried on Saturdays and things like that and people are just so busy on Saturdays, so Sunday seems to be a good time to do it, so that will be at two o'clock on that Sunday afternoon.
• 5:21
Speaker 3: That'll be the Sunday before Easter Palm Sunday.
• 5:25
Speaker 2: Awesome, Looking way, way out ahead.
• 5:27
Speaker 2: We want you all to go ahead and mark Summer gets busy quick.
• 5:30
Speaker 2: We want you to go ahead and be aware that our Vacation Bible School is going to be that first week of June, June 2nd through the 6th.
• 5:39
Speaker 2: So please go ahead and mark that on your calendar and avoid that week for vacations with the family, because we want your children here.
• 5:46
Speaker 2: That is an event that we invest heavily in here at DeSoto Hills.
• 5:52
Speaker 2: Our programming and what we really want you to do is have your children bring other kids who maybe need to hear the gospel.
• 6:01
Speaker 2: So please, please, please.
• 6:03
Speaker 2: June 2nd through the 6th, be aware of that.
• 6:05
Speaker 2: July 3rd through the 7th is going to be our youth camp and they're taking over with Floyd Mountain Village in Gatlinburg.
• 6:13
Speaker 2: They have all kinds of amazing things to do at that youth camp and our church is taking that over, so we'll have a private retreat center for that week.
• 6:26
Speaker 3: We did our own camp.
• 6:26
Speaker 3: Last year it was down at the beach, and so this year we're doing our own again in the mountains.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: It went well last year, so we're looking for the same this year, Right and Gatlinburg's obviously got a lot of fun stuff, and David has hinted that there will be some of that stuff that will be a part of the week as well.
• 6:41
Speaker 2: Also, right on top of that and this is something that we've tried to do for several years now and we finally were able to do it our children's camp will also be that week, july the 4th through the 6th, and it's going to be right up here up the road at Camp Cordova.
• 6:56
Speaker 2: So they've got a lot of amazing amenities there as well, so the kids are going to have an amazing camp week.
• 7:05
Speaker 2: We want to make you aware that DeSoto County Schools actually released next year's school calendar last week.
• 7:10
Speaker 2: So if you want to check out the school calendar for family planning that has been released, you can go to the DeSoto County Schools website and find that information.
• 7:22
Speaker 2: For any of our events that we've got coming up, you can always check our website.
• 7:26
Speaker 2: We have all of the registration information for those events on the website.
• 7:32
Speaker 2: If you don't see registration stuff for an event that you know is on the calendar coming up, that just means that registration hasn't opened yet, or if it's a really close event, it may have closed already.
• 7:42
  Speaker 2: But, as always.
• 7:43
Speaker 2: We want you to call our church office if you have any question about that, because there are ways.
• 7:47
Speaker 2: Sometimes, if we've got space, we will slip you in If we can.
• 7:51
Speaker 2: We will absolutely do that.
• 7:52
  Speaker 2: All right, grant.
• 7:54
Speaker 2: Coming up Sunday, march 2nd is the Oscars, so we'll go ahead for our listeners and release a caveat that we understand.
• 8:04
Speaker 2: Hollywood is not of God and it's of the world.
• 8:08
Speaker 2: Ok, and me and Grant certainly understand that, but we do, we do.
• 8:13
Speaker 2: I do love cinema and movies and anybody who knows me knows that I live in the world of media and making videos and films and I have been that way for most of my life.
• 8:22
Speaker 2: I was tinkering with this stuff long before we had digital.
• 8:26
Speaker 2: I was using vcrs and stacking vcrs and making little movies and stuff.
• 8:29
Speaker 2: So, uh, there are obviously there's lots of different types of movies.
• 8:33
Speaker 2: Most films that that are going to get awards for the oscars are what we would call art films, are not necessarily the blockbusters.
• 8:40
Speaker 2: In fact, they hate blockbusters.
• 8:42
Speaker 2: Top Gun didn't even win a few years ago.
• 8:44
Speaker 2: Everybody's like that's the best movie ever.
• 8:46
Speaker 2: But there were a couple of decent movies that were what we would call art films.
• 8:54
Speaker 2: This year the one that I found the film entertaining.
• 8:57
Speaker 2: Grant was just because I'm fascinated with history and that movie took a deep dive into how we assume, possibly, that the cardinals all get together for the election of a pope and it's a very political sort of story that happens behind those closed doors and from my understanding, we really don't know what goes on because that's a very private thing and I guess you have to be a cardinal to know what's going to go on behind those doors I guess I didn't see that and I yeah, it was a very interesting film.
• 9:35
Speaker 2: Uh, certainly don't go into a three-hour movie like that expecting for a lot of action like it's a drama, a very slow, unfolding drama.
• 9:45
Speaker 2: That one's actually rated PG, so it's okay.
• 9:48
Speaker 2: There was nothing really terrible in it other than you just have to know what you're getting into.
• 9:53
  Speaker 2: It's a thriller.
• 9:54
  Speaker 2: Essentially it's a thriller.
• 9:56
Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you, since it is Oscar time, if you have a favorite movie that you have gravitated towards through the years.
• 10:06
Speaker 3: I don't know a favorite movie that you have gravitated towards through the years.
• 10:08
Speaker 3: I don't know a favorite, a favorite movie, like there are several that I have that I enjoy.
• 10:14
Speaker 3: I you know just, I guess, my background.
• 10:18
Speaker 3: I enjoy the sport, old, good feeling sports movies you know Rudy Miracle the Rookie, I guess.
• 10:32
  Speaker 3: Remember the Titans?
• 10:33
Speaker 3: That's probably way up there for me.
• 10:37
Speaker 3: Actually, when I was a student minister, every trip we went on.
• 10:43
Speaker 3: Every trip we went on the first our bus.
• 10:50
Speaker 3: We had a 30 passenger bus and it had a vcr on it and a tv and so, um, one of the first trips that we went on, we watched that movie on the way back and it and then we watched several movies that first trip.
• 11:01
Speaker 3: But that movie it became a tradition.
• 11:04
Speaker 3: Like the kids, one trip I wasn't going to show it and they were like we have to watch.
• 11:10
Speaker 3: Remember the Titans, we have to watch it.
• 11:13
  Speaker 3: It's tradition.
• 11:14
Speaker 3: So yeah, that's probably really up there.
• 11:20
Speaker 2: I have a whole list of movies.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: I like action movies, so movies like the Bourne Identity.
• 11:27
Speaker 3: I love the Bourne Identity.
• 11:28
Speaker 2: Great, great trilogy of movies, movies that I come back to a lot.
• 11:34
Speaker 2: There is a movie called Margin Call.
• 11:37
Speaker 2: It does have a lot of language in it, but it is basically just a drama about the unfolding of the night before the stock market crash of 2008.
• 11:46
Speaker 2: And it's the first bank that's about to have to take those steps, and of course they're freaking out because they know that this is going to be bad, the way that happens.
• 11:57
Speaker 2: Jeremy Irons, he's a great actor.
• 11:58
Speaker 2: He's in that movie.
• 11:59
Speaker 2: A lot of really good actors are in that movie.
• 12:01
Speaker 2: Glory Road is probably you talked about favorite movies.
• 12:06
Speaker 2: That may be my favorite sports movie.
• 12:10
Speaker 2: A close second would be 42 with.
• 12:14
  Speaker 1: Jackie.
• 12:15
  Speaker 2: Robinson.
• 12:15
Speaker 2: I also liked Moneyball with Brad Pitt.
• 12:19
Speaker 2: Do you remember that one?
• 12:20
Speaker 2: Yes, yes, it's good.
• 12:21
Speaker 2: Do you remember that one?
• 12:23
Speaker 2: Yes, yes, it's good.
• 12:23
Speaker 2: True story about trying to play the game with getting baseball players when you don't have a whole lot of money on a professional team, right.
• 12:35
Speaker 3: So when you're watching a movie, your favorite snack, what I eat all the time when I watch a movie, is popcorn.
• 12:41
Speaker 3: But the problem with it is every time it gets stuck in a kernel, gets stuck in my teeth and um the rest of the movie.
• 12:50
Speaker 3: I'm trying to get it out no shame, every time.
• 12:53
  Speaker 2: No shame.
• 12:53
Speaker 2: I have dental floss sitting right on the tv tray I'll do it right there in front everybody.
• 12:59
Speaker 2: I do not care.
• 13:00
Speaker 2: Popcorn is my favorite.
• 13:03
Speaker 2: Uh, my favorite type of popcorn is the Pop Secret movie theater butter.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: It has to be a certain kind.
• 13:09
Speaker 2: If I'm traveling, that's probably in my backpack on the plane.
• 13:13
Speaker 2: I'm telling you right now I'll take my own popcorn, I don't have any problems.
• 13:16
Speaker 2: So do you know?
• 13:19
Speaker 3: one of my kids I think it was Sam.
• 13:23
Speaker 3: One of my kids, I think it was Sam in the eighth grade.
• 13:26
Speaker 3: In our homeschool community they do a science project and one year one of the projects was which popcorn is the best to pop in the microwave, and I'm pretty sure Pop Secret came out as the best to pop in the microwave Pop.
• 13:42
Speaker 2: Secret, but it's got to be the Pop Secret movie theater butter.
• 13:45
Speaker 2: And now you have to be careful to look on the pack, because they had the little, what they call snack packs, which are tiny, and I don't want that.
• 13:51
Speaker 2: I want the family.
• 13:53
Speaker 1: I want the family size dog.
• 13:54
Speaker 2: Yes, I want the family size one so it's got to be the pop secret movie theater butter.
• 13:59
Speaker 2: I mix my own popcorn salt.
• 14:01
Speaker 2: Yes, I said it out loud.
• 14:03
Speaker 2: Jennifer is rolling her eyes right now, she's listening to this.
• 14:07
Speaker 2: I get the Colonel Seasons butter popcorn seasoning mix.
• 14:11
Speaker 2: It is not very salty, that's just like a light butter taste, and then I mix it with the Colonel Seasons popcorn salt, which is way too salty.
• 14:20
Speaker 2: I literally open the containers and mix them together and then take a butter knife down in there and stir it up.
• 14:26
Speaker 2: It makes the perfect popcorn snack for the movie occasions.
• 14:32
Speaker 2: I'm just telling you right now.
• 14:33
Speaker 2: If y'all need any more tips about that, hit me up at church.
• 14:35
Speaker 2: I'll tell you all about mixing the popcorn salt.
• 14:38
Speaker 3: We don't do microwave popcorn, but we pop it in a microwave.
• 14:41
Speaker 2: We just buy brown bags, use just regular popcorn kernels what like kernels that you're going to put on a stovetop with the old style and somebody has somebody.
• 14:52
Speaker 3: A friend of ours has.
• 14:53
Speaker 3: They grow popcorn, so they give us fresh popcorn seeds and you put it.
• 14:58
Speaker 3: You just put it in a brown like lunch bag and put it in the microwave.
• 15:02
  Speaker 3: It pops.
• 15:02
  Speaker 3: The same.
• 15:03
Speaker 3: I even saw a video the other day of people who put the butter in and salt in before it popped.
• 15:09
  Speaker 3: Stop it Now.
• 15:12
Speaker 3: The bag came out very buttery, but they said on the video that it was fantastic the butter and salt.
• 15:21
Speaker 2: So you source this popcorn from where that y'all use.
• 15:25
Speaker 3: We have a friend that has some homemade, but we also just you know you can buy it in the grocery store, just where you buy the microwave you just buy regular popcorn in a container.
• 15:34
Speaker 2: You just pour it in like a black I mean a brown lunch sack, yes, and seal it up.
• 15:39
Speaker 2: Seal it up, roll the top, and then you put it in the microwave for how long it's like two, two and a half minutes.
• 15:46
Speaker 2: And if it stops popping just like a regular bag, you take it out.
• 15:49
Speaker 3: Pops just the same.
• 15:50
  Speaker 3: It's cheaper.
• 15:51
Speaker 3: That's probably a way cheaper way to do it.
• 15:53
  Speaker 2: It's cheaper.
• 15:54
Speaker 2: Now that all our listeners are wondering what podcast they've actually clicked on to, we are now going to actually shift to our devotion portion of the podcast that we call the midweek moment.
• 16:13
Speaker 3: As we continue going through this.
• 16:15
Speaker 3: I tell you just to be honest real quick, I've enjoyed listening to David and Laura's take because they've been doing the same thing of just kind of following along with our reading and devotion and they've done such a great job.
• 16:28
Speaker 3: But we approach it differently and so I love that you see our different personalities and how we do it.
• 16:35
Speaker 2: That's what I love about the podcast period.
• 16:36
  Speaker 2: Everybody's a little different, it's great.
• 16:39
  Speaker 3: That's fun, that's fun.
• 16:40
Speaker 3: And so tomorrow, if you're up on the readings and you may be a little bit behind, that's fine, my encouragement to you.
• 16:49
Speaker 3: Let me encourage you this If you've gotten behind, don't try to make it all up at one time.
• 16:55
Speaker 3: Just get back in it.
• 16:57
Speaker 3: Don't put it off.
• 16:58
Speaker 3: Don't say, well, I'm so far behind, I'm giving up.
• 17:00
  Speaker 3: Don't do that.
• 17:01
Speaker 3: Just slowly get back in it, um, and, and pick it up.
• 17:06
Speaker 3: You know you might pick up two days and as opposed to one or something, but you know, don't, don't, don't feel like I can't do it, I'm so far behind, and if you're behind, it's fine.
• 17:18
Speaker 3: Just pick it back up and and go with it and you'll catch up and it'll, and it'll be fine.
• 17:24
Speaker 3: The goal is to read it.
• 17:26
Speaker 3: If you read it in a year, great.
• 17:28
Speaker 3: But the goal for us is to engage with Scripture, so do that.
• 17:31
Speaker 3: But if you're on the reading tomorrow, you should start the book of Deuteronomy.
• 17:36
Speaker 3: The 20th I believe that's correct you start the book of Deuteronomy, and so let's talk just a little bit to prepare us for Deuteronomy.
• 17:45
Speaker 3: What we've been doing is looking at what we have read, but let's be prepared for Deuteronomy Real quickly.
• 17:50
Speaker 3: Deuteronomy is the pregame speech.
• 17:54
Speaker 3: So Joshua comes after Deuteronomy.
• 17:59
Speaker 3: That's when Israel enters the land.
• 18:01
Speaker 3: Deuteronomy is right before.
• 18:05
Speaker 3: So you had Exodus and Leviticus, where God gave the people of Israel the law at Mount Sinai, and then you have Numbers where they were going.
• 18:15
  Speaker 3: They rebelled.
• 18:16
Speaker 3: God said nope, we're going to let the next generation go in.
• 18:21
Speaker 3: So right, 40 years in the wilderness.
• 18:23
Speaker 3: Deuteronomy picks up right before they're going in.
• 18:25
Speaker 3: Moses is about to die and they're about to go into the promised land.
• 18:30
Speaker 3: So what Moses does is he gives the pregame speech.
• 18:33
Speaker 3: Here's what you need to do to be ready to go into the promised land and also I'm dying, joshua's taking over.
• 18:42
Speaker 3: Here's things you need to do to be prepared for that.
• 18:45
Speaker 3: And so he's helping them get ready, and so it's kind of a retelling of the law.
• 18:50
Speaker 3: So if you struggle through Leviticus going oh my stars, this law he's about to do that.
• 18:57
Speaker 3: So be ready for that.
• 18:58
Speaker 3: But look at it a different way.
• 19:00
Speaker 3: It's really based on three different speeches of Moses, so it's not just one pregame speech, it's three, and it's three speeches where he goes through and a lot of it.
• 19:10
Speaker 3: You can get caught up in the details, but remember this as you're reading the point of the law, and I think the point that Moses is trying to make is what they should be focusing on is their relationship with God At this point should be focusing on is their relationship with God At this point.
• 19:29
Speaker 3: Their relationship was based on obedience to the law, and so he's calling them to keep the law a lot, but the focus on keeping the law is so they can be in relationship with God.
• 19:37
Speaker 3: God has said that I will be your God, you will be my people, if you keep this law, and so that's what he's doing.
• 19:43
Speaker 3: So he's telling them, but today I just wanted us to focus right in the middle of Deuteronomy 6.
• 19:51
Speaker 3: We know this is the Shema or Shema.
• 19:53
Speaker 3: People say it different ways, but here's what he says Deuteronomy 6, verse 1.
• 19:59
Speaker 3: Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the rules that the Lord, your God, commanded me to teach you.
• 20:05
Speaker 3: That you may do them in the land which you are going over to possess it.
• 20:09
Speaker 3: That you may fear the Lord, your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all these statutes and his commandments, which I command you all the days of your life.
• 20:21
Speaker 3: That your days may be long.
• 20:23
Speaker 3: Hear, therefore, o Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you and that you may multiply greatly, as the God of your fathers has promised you in a land flowing with milk and honey.
• 20:35
Speaker 3: Hear O Israel, the Lord, our God.
• 20:38
Speaker 3: The Lord is one.
• 20:40
Speaker 3: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might.
• 20:44
Speaker 3: And these words I command you today shall be on your heart.
• 20:48
Speaker 3: You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise.
• 20:56
Speaker 3: You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
• 21:01
Speaker 3: You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
• 21:05
Speaker 3: And so this is.
• 21:06
Speaker 3: You know, in the New Testament they question Jesus what's the greatest commandment?
• 21:10
Speaker 3: He said you should love the Lord, your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.
• 21:13
Speaker 3: This is where he's quoting Deuteronomy, chapter six, right there.
• 21:17
Speaker 3: This is the commandment here the Lord, your God is one.
• 21:20
Speaker 3: You should love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.
• 21:27
Speaker 3: And so this verse, I think, is I don't know if you could say it's the theme verse of Deuteronomy, because there's a bunch, but it is A.
• 21:33
Speaker 3: It is pointing to Israel.
• 21:35
Speaker 3: You have this covenant relationship with God and at this point it's two covenants.
• 21:41
Speaker 3: You have the Abrahamic covenant, where God has promised Abraham land, descendants and blessing the earth.
• 21:49
Speaker 3: So they're under that covenant.
• 21:56
Speaker 3: But they're also under the Mosaic covenant or the covenant of Mount Sinai, where he says I'm going to be your God, you're going to be my people, keep the law.
• 22:01
Speaker 3: And so he's calling them to do that, but he's pointing them to the focus of the law Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might and with all your strength.
• 22:13
Speaker 3: Now, for us, in the New Testament, it's a little bit different, because the law is still important to us, but we're not under the law, we're under grace.
• 22:21
Speaker 3: Jesus kept the law perfectly because we can't.
• 22:26
Speaker 3: Jesus kept the law perfectly because we can't and he applies that to us so that now, because Jesus has done that and because we've received mercy and grace from him, we can love the Lord, our God, with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.
• 22:38
Speaker 3: So as you read Deuteronomy, as you continue to go through this yes, I know you can get caught up in the detail and it just seems overwhelming.
• 22:48
Speaker 3: But remember, all of this is pointing us to, it was pointing Israel to.
• 22:52
Speaker 3: This is how you love God.
• 22:54
Speaker 3: This is focus on these things.
• 22:57
Speaker 3: This is how you love God and for us we can see okay, we are able to love God because Jesus did all this for us.
• 23:04
Speaker 3: He kept all of these laws for us.
• 23:06
Speaker 3: He did it perfectly and rightly so.
• 23:09
Speaker 3: We can be in relationship because of Jesus.
• 23:11
Speaker 3: But it doesn't do away with these things.
• 23:13
Speaker 3: Now what it does, instead of bringing us into relationship, and then it doesn't even keep us in relationship with God it just tells us this is how we can grow in our relationship with God.
• 23:26
Speaker 2: All right, a couple of questions.
• 23:27
Speaker 2: Okay, why did God issue, or why did they have, the law in the Old Testament when we don't have it in the New Testament?
• 23:36
Speaker 2: Why were they given the law in the first place?
• 23:38
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 23:38
Speaker 3: So Paul's going to say in Romans what the law does is help you recognize that you're a sinner.
• 23:46
Speaker 3: It's really what it does for us.
• 23:49
Speaker 3: In the Old Testament, they didn't view it that way.
• 23:52
Speaker 3: What it was is a covenant, is an agreement, right where you come in and there's stipulations I'm going to do this, you're going to do that.
• 24:01
Speaker 3: So that's the covenant.
• 24:03
Speaker 3: God says I'm going to be your God, I'm going to protect you, I'm going to take care of you.
• 24:07
Speaker 3: He even said in places in Exodus that he is going to send his angels ahead of them and as they just take over Canaan, the promised land, they're not going to have to.
• 24:18
Speaker 3: They really weren't going to have to fight If they would have just obeyed and trusted.
• 24:22
Speaker 3: God was going to take care of all of that.
• 24:24
Speaker 3: All they had to do.
• 24:25
Speaker 3: He was going to be their God, they were going to be his people.
• 24:32
Speaker 3: All they had to do was obey.
• 24:32
Speaker 3: They didn't do that.
• 24:33
  Speaker 3: So great.
• 24:33
Speaker 3: So the curses came instead of the blessings, but it was given.
• 24:36
Speaker 3: This is how you can be in relationship with God.
• 24:39
Speaker 3: It also holiness, which he calls us to be holy.
• 24:43
Speaker 3: It means set apart and separate.
• 24:45
Speaker 3: So it was how Israel separated themselves from the rest of the nations.
• 24:50
Speaker 3: A lot of the laws that we don't particularly keep anymore were laws that were given that separated them from the rest of the nations.
• 25:03
Speaker 3: So sacrifice, for instance.
• 25:04
Speaker 3: Well, sacrifice was, yes, that's one of them, but sacrifice is different from that, because sacrifice pointed to a Savior.
• 25:12
Speaker 3: We don't sacrifice because the Savior has come, but things like wearing clothes made of two kinds of material, not shaving the corners of your beard, I mean there are things like that that don't apply, because those are the things that just that was just separating them from the people.
• 25:32
  Speaker 2: Second question covenant.
• 25:33
Speaker 2: What's a good definition for that for listeners who may not understand, Because that's a word that's thrown around the Old Testament all the time?
• 25:40
  Speaker 3: That's a great question.
• 25:41
  Speaker 3: It's like a treaty, almost.
• 25:47
Speaker 3: We would look at it almost as a.
• 25:50
Speaker 3: It's just an agreement.
• 25:58
Speaker 3: I'm trying to think of the word.
• 25:59
Speaker 3: There's a legal word now and I can't think of what it is and when we get done I'll go.
• 26:01
Speaker 3: You grant you knew what that was, but it's, it's a.
• 26:03
  Speaker 3: It's a.
• 26:03
Speaker 3: It's a, it's agreement where you come in and say, okay, I'm gonna do this, you're gonna do this, and this is how we're going to be in relationship.
• 26:13
Speaker 2: Got it, love it.
