- 0:00Speaker 1: Dave Warner's from the suburbs, and he's from the suburbs,
- 0:03Speaker 1: 50th anniversary tour.
- 0:04Speaker 2: It all depends on the inflection, doesn't it?
- 0:07Speaker 1: Is going to be at the Astor Theatre on Saturday
- 0:09Speaker 1: the 24th of October.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Tickets are through Ticketek. He's with us this morning. Hello, Dave.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Morning, Dave.
- 0:14Speaker 4: Good morning, gang, and lovely to chat to beautiful Perth.
- 0:17Speaker 3: And originally, of course, that suburb was Bicton, wasn't it?
- 0:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yes, grew up in Bicton. Spent a
- 0:22Speaker 4: fair bit of time with the grandparents in Fremantle as well.
- 0:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Yeah, but, yeah, primarily Bicton.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I know you're over in Sydney these days, but are
- 0:30Speaker 3: you still a Frio fan?
- 0:32Speaker 4: Oh, I'm a Frio fan, but my number one allegiance
- 0:35Speaker 4: in the AFL is to the Swans.
- 0:38Speaker 5: Oh.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Yeah, so I copped a doubly. Not only did Frio
- 0:41Speaker 4: knock out the Swans, which I didn't mind because I went, oh, well,
- 0:44Speaker 4: I'm pleased for Frio, and I was really hoping they
- 0:47Speaker 4: could win, and then, you know, they got knocked off
- 0:49Speaker 4: as well.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 0:51Speaker 4: I lost out both ways this year.
- 0:53Speaker 1: The tour finishes with a big hometown show at the Astor, which,
- 0:57Speaker 1: of course, has been around forever as well, speaking about
- 1:00Speaker 1: suburban things. Is there something extra special about celebrating the
- 1:04Speaker 1: anniversary in Perth compared to anywhere else?
- 1:06Speaker 4: Well, yeah. I mean, we started in Perth almost 50
- 1:09Speaker 4: years to the day, almost 50 years today. I think
- 1:12Speaker 4: it was the Optican Theatre.
- 1:14Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:15Speaker 4: It feels fitting that the 50 year exact circle should,
- 1:19Speaker 4: you know, come to a conclusion in Perth and at
- 1:21Speaker 4: the Astor. It's a great venue. And, you know, it's
- 1:25Speaker 4: also the place where a lot of people who played
- 1:26Speaker 4: with the band over the years or with my previous band, Puss,
- 1:30Speaker 4: are located. And so we're, you know, we're getting everybody together.
- 1:35Speaker 5: Some of the venues that Puss played, of course, have
- 1:39Speaker 5: come and gone over the 50 years. Some very Famous
- 1:44Speaker 5: Perth venues. Any other famous Perth venues that you pine for?
- 1:48Speaker 4: Oh, look, we love the Shenton Park. I pretty much
- 1:50Speaker 4: started that venue off for rock and roll, and it
- 1:53Speaker 4: was a fabulous venue for many bands, but especially for us.
- 1:57Speaker 4: The Victoria Hotel we played. Oh, look, all the herdsmen,
- 2:00Speaker 4: the raffles. all those great places. Iconic. And the Charles,
- 2:04Speaker 4: which I think is the only one still in existence.
- 2:07Speaker 4: It is.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And they haven't had the carpet cleaned since you last
- 2:09Speaker 1: played there.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Either, by the way.
- 2:12Speaker 3: And the Shents is now a retirement village.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yes, see, the irony is you and I could live
- 2:16Speaker 1: at the Shents now, Dave. We used to go there
- 2:19Speaker 1: to see shows and now we could move in.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely. And the same with the Swanbourne. Yes, that's
- 2:26Speaker 4: gone as well.
- 2:27Speaker 3: It went the same way, of course.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Now, I'm sure you've had all sorts of accolades from
- 2:31Speaker 1: other artists over the years, but Bob Dylan didn't hand
- 2:35Speaker 1: them out very freely, and yet he once named you
- 2:38Speaker 1: among his favourite Australian artists.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Quite the compliment.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Yeah, look, perhaps he really, really loved me. When he
- 2:46Speaker 4: was asked what Australian bands did he know, the fact
- 2:49Speaker 4: was his band had come to see us playing in
- 2:51Speaker 4: our very first Melbourne gig in 1978, and they really
- 2:54Speaker 4: liked it, asked if we had any tapes, and I
- 2:56Speaker 4: gave them some live recording cassette tapes from the Victoria Hotel,
- 3:00Speaker 4: and they played it in the tour bus for the
- 3:03Speaker 4: Perhaps Bob only knew myself and Richard Clapton. I don't know.
- 3:08Speaker 4: But I was assured that he did enjoy it.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Talking yourself down.
- 3:12Speaker 3: It was either out of you or air supply at
- 3:13Speaker 3: the time.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Dave, if a young musician in Perth, a suburban kid,
- 3:20Speaker 1: wanted to build a career that lasts 50 years.
- 3:23Speaker 2: What is the one piece of advice you would give them?
- 3:26Speaker 4: Yeah, well, looking back at myself, and I'm not sure
- 3:28Speaker 4: this is a very good piece of advice, but look,
- 3:30Speaker 4: it was to search for what I called veracity, for
- 3:32Speaker 4: kind of truth in yourself and to express that. And
- 3:36Speaker 4: at that time, no one was really doing that in
- 3:38Speaker 4: Australian music other than around about the same time Skyhooks
- 3:41Speaker 4: and Greg McCainch in Melbourne. So for me, it worked.
- 3:44Speaker 4: It doesn't necessarily give you the biggest following, but it
- 3:48Speaker 4: gives you an incredibly... loyal following, rusted on for many years.
- 3:52Speaker 4: I think always try and be original was my thing,
- 3:54Speaker 4: but it's a little bit different now. And I think
- 3:57Speaker 4: if you want massive sales, you should probably ignore my
- 3:59Speaker 4: advice completely.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Oh, no, I think your advice is very, very good
- 4:02Speaker 1: because I think that another suburban boy, suburban Dianella boy,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Troy Savan, has done that exact thing.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Well, that's true.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And he is, you know.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Different style of music, that's all.
- 4:10Speaker 2: He may well be around for a few years himself.
- 4:12Speaker 1: It's going to be great to see you at the ASTA,
- 4:15Speaker 1: Saturday the 24th of October.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Tickets are through Ticketek.com.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Dave, we look forward to having you back, mate.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Absolutely. It'll be lovely to hear your dulcet tones as
- 4:24Speaker 4: I'm cruising around somewhere between Mundaring and City. I'll be
- 4:31Speaker 4: looking forward to it.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Thanks, Dave.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Good on you, Dave. Cheers, gang.
