- 0:16Speaker 2: The government is going to make it easier for community
- 0:18Speaker 2: clubs to serve Booze at President at present, a lot
- 0:21Speaker 2: of sports clubs, working men's clubs, aresays, sell liquor through
- 0:25Speaker 2: a club license, which is a lot more restrictive than
- 0:27Speaker 2: the standard on license. Now Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee
- 0:31Speaker 2: says she's going to change that. She's going to allow
- 0:32Speaker 2: the clubs to apply for a non license. Lucy Waters
- 0:35Speaker 2: is chief executive of Clubs n Z and with us Now, Hi, Lucy, hello,
- 0:40Speaker 2: how are you?
- 0:40Speaker 1: And well?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Thank you? What's wrong with the current license?
- 0:44Speaker 3: Their current license for a club license? It only allows
- 0:49Speaker 3: clubs to sell or supply alcohol to their members, guests
- 0:53Speaker 3: of members or affiliated members, so members from a club
- 0:58Speaker 3: where they've got a reciprocal arrangement in place. And what
- 1:02Speaker 3: we find is that most people just don't realize that
- 1:07Speaker 3: these restrictions exists. And he might have someone that decides
- 1:12Speaker 3: to pop into their local club, support a community event,
- 1:15Speaker 3: see what it's all about, only to discover that they
- 1:18Speaker 3: actually can't be served because they're not a member.
- 1:23Speaker 2: How long have these rules been in place?
- 1:25Speaker 3: Forever but well before my time?
- 1:28Speaker 2: I have never been a member of an RSA, and
- 1:31Speaker 2: yet I've had a number of drinks and number of RSAs.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So how's that worked?
- 1:36Speaker 3: That is a good question, because under the settings they
- 1:39Speaker 3: should only be serving alcohol to the members, guests and members.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Well, is it possible that I have come in as
- 1:47Speaker 2: a guest of a member?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Very very possible. So if you've ever gone into a
- 1:51Speaker 3: club and you've been with someone else and you've been
- 1:54Speaker 3: signed in, then that that would be That would be fine.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Okay, I see Now, why is it that clubs have
- 1:59Speaker 2: had to have these licenses rather than on licenses?
- 2:03Speaker 3: They are prevented under the current Sale and Supply of
- 2:06Speaker 3: alcohol from holding.
- 2:07Speaker 2: An online Why why? Lucy? That is a good question.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Isn't life in this country full of very good questions
- 2:16Speaker 2: about the stupid rules that we have?
- 2:18Speaker 3: It absolutely is, So that's one of the questions we've
- 2:21Speaker 3: been asking.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Okay, so once this rule changes, does that mean that
- 2:27Speaker 2: you will be able to go into, for example, the
- 2:30Speaker 2: Fishing Club in Tyrua and have a drink if you're
- 2:33Speaker 2: not a member or not a guest of a member.
- 2:37Speaker 3: If they choose to. So if this all goes through,
- 2:40Speaker 3: the clubs will have a choice over whether they retain
- 2:44Speaker 3: their club license or whether they move to an nonlicense.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So if they move to an unlicense, then they'll be
- 2:50Speaker 3: able to open the doors and in the public will
- 2:53Speaker 3: be able to begin enjoying the club.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I mean, we might actually decide at the Fishing Club
- 2:57Speaker 2: in Tyrue that we don't want everybody coming in so
- 2:59Speaker 2: much get the rules. But does Lucy, is this potentially
- 3:04Speaker 2: part of the problem with Ari says and why they're dying.
- 3:09Speaker 3: We do think that, and this is an issue that
- 3:12Speaker 3: we've raised, is that that quite often if someone's new
- 3:16Speaker 3: to an RSA, they're wanting to come in and experience it,
- 3:20Speaker 3: they come into this list of rules that they need
- 3:24Speaker 3: to comply with. So if we can start removing some
- 3:26Speaker 3: of those barriers open the doors up, then we feel
- 3:30Speaker 3: that the risas and our other clubs will be able
- 3:34Speaker 3: to look at their options and start modernizing and becoming
- 3:39Speaker 3: community facilities.
- 3:40Speaker 2: He is hoping, Lucy, thank you very much, appreciate appreciate it.
- 3:43Speaker 2: That's Lucy Water. It's Club's New Zealand chief executive.
