- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Dan Hurley the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches
- 0:02Speaker 1: Show Mike Crispino. Here we get into the second week
- 0:05Speaker 1: of the Big East season. To Paul on a Sunday afternoon,
- 0:09Speaker 1: Dan Mattinee, kind of a weird time. I think it's
- 0:12Speaker 1: three thirty local time. Any any thought on afternoon versus
- 0:18Speaker 1: night games. I think like sometimes matinees are kind of
- 0:21Speaker 1: tough for players.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I I don't, you know, and I
- 0:25Speaker 2: try not to. I try not to let my mind
- 0:29Speaker 2: go into places and things I can't control. I think
- 0:31Speaker 2: I'm trying to grow that way and ruminate on things that,
- 0:36Speaker 2: you know, like playing at the eight thirty game the
- 0:38Speaker 2: other night Eastern time, you know, and obviously we've got
- 0:42Speaker 2: new TV partners and streaming and you know, you kind
- 0:46Speaker 2: of like you never know what channel or streaming service
- 0:50Speaker 2: you're going to be on. So I think you just
- 0:52Speaker 2: you know, you you go with the flow. You know that,
- 0:55Speaker 2: you know. Your biggest my biggest concern this time of
- 0:57Speaker 2: year is the human nature. You know, going into Christmas break,
- 1:00Speaker 2: you know things are going well for us, and Christmas
- 1:03Speaker 2: break means that human nature says, I'm going to take
- 1:06Speaker 2: my foot off gas and so I'm just all over
- 1:10Speaker 2: everyone here right now about being ready to play on
- 1:13Speaker 2: Sunday and making sure that you know, we finished, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 2: we go into Christmas having put ourselves in the best
- 1:21Speaker 2: possible position.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, just wrapping up a quick thing on our what
- 1:25Speaker 1: we talked about on film a segment before. Rebounding had
- 1:29Speaker 1: been a bit of an issue, not Yukon quality. Maybe
- 1:31Speaker 1: the first six or eight games. Last two games, two
- 1:34Speaker 1: really good rebounding teams come into the building Texas and
- 1:38Speaker 1: Butler and Yukon did a nice job. I mean, they
- 1:41Speaker 1: put together some good numbers. How did you view the
- 1:45Speaker 1: rebounding change over? It looks like you're getting to the
- 1:48Speaker 1: glass a little bit better here in the last couple.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's better, but still not where it
- 1:53Speaker 2: needs to be by any stretch. We've got a long
- 1:56Speaker 2: way to go there, you know. And again, like rebounding is,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you know, it's like one of those things where you
- 2:02Speaker 2: got to do it every single time to have any success,
- 2:05Speaker 2: and you're only going to have success, you know, fifteen
- 2:10Speaker 2: percent of the time, twelve percent of the time, eighteen
- 2:12Speaker 2: percent of the time, twenty percent of the time. You're
- 2:15Speaker 2: going to get an offensive rebound, but you've got to
- 2:17Speaker 2: go every time just to get that small percentage. So
- 2:21Speaker 2: it takes, you know, relentless people, and it is the
- 2:24Speaker 2: one thing in basketball I think that you could do
- 2:27Speaker 2: selfishly besides try to be the defensive player of the
- 2:31Speaker 2: year or first team all defenses, Like, you could be
- 2:34Speaker 2: selfish about your rebounding.
- 2:36Speaker 3: You know that that's okay.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I mean, being a selfish rebounder means that you're pursuing
- 2:40Speaker 2: every ball to the max and just haven't been able
- 2:43Speaker 2: to get there. Some of it is, you know, some
- 2:46Speaker 2: of it's been at center. You know, I think we've
- 2:47Speaker 2: got Tarris's I think he's a lot healthier now, So
- 2:51Speaker 2: the expectation is he could be the rebounder that we
- 2:54Speaker 2: need him to be.
- 2:55Speaker 3: You know, Eric's improved there.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But our wings and our guards, I don't think we
- 2:59Speaker 2: have any that has rebounded their position at the level
- 3:02Speaker 2: we want them to.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 1: The other the other item on defense was the shot blocking.
- 3:07Speaker 1: You think you're averaging about five going into these last
- 3:09Speaker 1: couple of games, but thirteen blocks against Butler. I thought
- 3:13Speaker 1: that was one of the turning points. At least defensively,
- 3:16Speaker 1: it looked like, well it.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Was It was obviously the centers, uh you know, did
- 3:21Speaker 2: their part that way, but it was also it was
- 3:24Speaker 2: we're much better in terms of like rotating over to
- 3:27Speaker 2: help help a fellow teammate who had given up a
- 3:31Speaker 2: driver cut.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Or a roll and made a play on the ball.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I mean guys like Solo and Braylan and Jalen and
- 3:37Speaker 2: Jaden Ross and Alex Caraban. I mean, these guys you know,
- 3:42Speaker 2: have the length and the size and athleticism to be
- 3:45Speaker 2: able to you know, help us as a as a
- 3:47Speaker 2: as a as a rim protecting team.
- 3:49Speaker 3: So uh, we know we were able to do that.
- 3:51Speaker 2: With Historically we were always one of the top shop
- 3:53Speaker 2: blocking teams in the country. So you know that elite
- 3:57Speaker 2: defensive teams protect the rim.
- 4:00Speaker 4: A Solo ball will be with us in a couple
- 4:02Speaker 4: of minutes.
- 4:03Speaker 1: He was talking after the game the other night that
- 4:06Speaker 1: he didn't even think about scoring and he comes up
- 4:08Speaker 1: with twenty six.
- 4:09Speaker 4: A career high. Is that real? Do athletes do that?
- 4:13Speaker 1: Sometimes they kind of like, Okay, I'm putting that on
- 4:15Speaker 1: my mind, I'm gonna think about something else, and whatever
- 4:19Speaker 1: happens on the offensive end is going to happen.
- 4:21Speaker 4: And that's the way he told it. I thought that
- 4:23Speaker 4: was pretty cool.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I mean, we encourage him to do that.
- 4:26Speaker 2: We encourage them to get lost in the game by giving,
- 4:31Speaker 2: you know, just incredible effort. Be a three way playmaker.
- 4:35Speaker 2: You know, like I defend, I play offense at a
- 4:39Speaker 2: high level, either as a shot creator or as a scorer,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and I'm all over the backboard. Right, So there's there's
- 4:46Speaker 2: those three components to the game. You got to be
- 4:48Speaker 2: a three way playmaker, and you got to give maximum,
- 4:52Speaker 2: multiple winning plays effort.
- 4:53Speaker 3: On every possession.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Right, just get lost in giving great effort, being all
- 4:57Speaker 2: over the glass and being a being and being a
- 5:00Speaker 2: really good defensive player and just let offense happen to you.
- 5:04Speaker 2: You know, you can't fixate on how the game is
- 5:06Speaker 2: going for you from an offensive perspective. When you do that,
- 5:11Speaker 2: you end they putting pressure on yourself to make shots,
- 5:15Speaker 2: put pressure on yourself relative to your numbers and how
- 5:17Speaker 2: the game's going for you, and you stop playing for
- 5:21Speaker 2: team it.
- 5:23Speaker 4: You can't do that, that's for sure.
- 5:25Speaker 1: The other item three point defense, that was a big
- 5:27Speaker 1: issue with Butler coming in. They were number one, you
- 5:30Speaker 1: know among the Big East teams in three point shooting,
- 5:32Speaker 1: thirty nine percent. Yukon was number one defensively, so that
- 5:36Speaker 1: I know that was up on the board there your
- 5:38Speaker 1: chalkboard before every game. But Yukon has held teams to
- 5:42Speaker 1: twenty seven percent coming in and they did a great job. Again,
- 5:45Speaker 1: what goes into doing that?
- 5:46Speaker 4: Is that?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Is it all perimeter work or is there other things
- 5:49Speaker 1: involved in being a good three point field goal defense?
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 5:54Speaker 2: A lot of it, you know a lot of it.
- 5:56Speaker 2: It starts at point guard. It starts in ball screen defensive. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 2: ball screen defensive breakdowns with the roller or the or
- 6:03Speaker 2: the guard with the ball, you're going to give up threes.
- 6:06Speaker 2: So you know, Silas has solved a lot of that.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I mean, you know, just to get our defense stabilized
- 6:13Speaker 2: this year.
- 6:14Speaker 3: And then it's just having having.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Smart people that understand scouting, understand you know, how much
- 6:21Speaker 2: help I should give off of certain players on the
- 6:23Speaker 2: on the opposing team, your relative to the type of
- 6:26Speaker 2: shots that we want them to shoot. You know, obviously,
- 6:29Speaker 2: you know shooters like biz Jack I think you know
- 6:33Speaker 2: who's who's an electric shooter or Haywood on Butler who
- 6:40Speaker 2: is a very efficient three point shooter. I mean, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 2: Kaiser probably got more good looks than we probably were
- 6:47Speaker 2: comfortable with. So I would say a lot of it.
- 6:50Speaker 2: This year has been just so much better of a
- 6:53Speaker 2: defensive team. But then I thought last year we had
- 6:55Speaker 2: some horrible luck. I mean, we caught teams on Knights
- 6:58Speaker 2: where they shot way the mean the entire year. Maybe
- 7:02Speaker 2: it was the price that we paid for back to back,
- 7:04Speaker 2: but you know, I just think we were a little
- 7:07Speaker 2: unlucky last year with people making shots against us that
- 7:11Speaker 2: they didn't make.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Before or after us last year.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Yeah, so luck goes into it, I guess does.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Unfortunately, Mike, I would say this year, though, we're much
- 7:24Speaker 2: better defensively, but also too, you know, last year I
- 7:27Speaker 2: thought we had a horrible, horrible fortune that way.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 1: As Solas Stemery junior, we talked about him a few
- 7:32Speaker 1: times already. He's a transfer in there running the offense
- 7:36Speaker 1: for the most bottolo one with Malachi Smith. They've averaged
- 7:38Speaker 1: about almost ten assists between him. But he keeps having
- 7:41Speaker 1: these games then, where like he set a career high
- 7:44Speaker 1: for eleven assists the other night.
- 7:46Speaker 4: I don't think I had a bucket until late in
- 7:48Speaker 4: the game.
- 7:49Speaker 1: But does it really matter if a guy's given you
- 7:51Speaker 1: eleven assists and doing what he's doing on the perimeter defensively,
- 7:54Speaker 1: how do you view that?
- 7:56Speaker 2: I mean I view it like, Yeah, I don't know
- 7:58Speaker 2: where we'd be without aim, without the approach he takes,
- 8:01Speaker 2: the playing where he thinks about himself.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Last, on offense, he's a ball hawk.
- 8:06Speaker 2: That's that's a tone for our defense that has put
- 8:09Speaker 2: us in a position that we are in, you know,
- 8:12Speaker 2: right now, which is a far cry from where we
- 8:14Speaker 2: were last year when we were the worst defensive team
- 8:17Speaker 2: I've probably coached in you know, eight or ten, twelve
- 8:20Speaker 2: years as a college coach. So, you know, the offensive end,
- 8:24Speaker 2: for him, I think he's you know, he's got a
- 8:27Speaker 2: lot of firepower out there, so he's got a lot
- 8:29Speaker 2: to think about. And then obviously he's conducting a system
- 8:34Speaker 2: of which we that we play that he's going to
- 8:37Speaker 2: just get better and better at as the year goes on,
- 8:39Speaker 2: and there's gonna be games like BYU where we're gonna
- 8:42Speaker 2: need him to go out and get a number for
- 8:45Speaker 2: us to win the game like he did that night,
- 8:46Speaker 2: And then there's gonna be games where we need him
- 8:49Speaker 2: to you know, to sacrifice some of his own to
- 8:52Speaker 2: to spread around to his weapons, and he's got a
- 8:54Speaker 2: lot of them, so you know, he's measured point guards
- 8:57Speaker 2: quarterbacks are measured by winning and on any given night,
- 9:00Speaker 2: it's it's whatever the team needs.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah, the talent is is so important obviously, But unselfishness
- 9:07Speaker 1: and and and being concerned about your team's success, that's
- 9:11Speaker 1: something that I don't know can you teach it? Is
- 9:13Speaker 1: that what you do or how do you handle that?
- 9:16Speaker 3: Well?
- 9:16Speaker 2: You know, the reality of it is that Mike is
- 9:19Speaker 2: you know, Yukon invests in all these guys for them
- 9:22Speaker 2: to come in and help us win.
- 9:24Speaker 3: So whether it's the way we.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Travel or or or or or you know, the practice
- 9:30Speaker 2: facility and all of the amenities and resources that we
- 9:34Speaker 2: invest n I L everything is is is for silost
- 9:38Speaker 2: Memory to come to help us win, not to play
- 9:40Speaker 2: on the team, not not not for him to play
- 9:45Speaker 2: on the team the way he wants to play on
- 9:46Speaker 2: the team, but the way that the team needs him
- 9:50Speaker 2: to play for us to be successful and win games.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Because that's what Yukon has made this investment in him for.
- 9:56Speaker 2: There's not to just be on the team. That's that
- 9:59Speaker 2: would be a really stud an investment, just so that
- 10:01Speaker 2: they have a locker at the facility and they play,
- 10:06Speaker 2: and that's not the point. The point is return on
- 10:10Speaker 2: investment for the university is for obviously these guys to
- 10:14Speaker 2: value their education, grow as men, represent the university really well,
- 10:19Speaker 2: but to help us win games. And that's the great
- 10:22Speaker 2: thing about Silas Emory is you know, he understands that
- 10:25Speaker 2: he's about winning. You know, we don't ask him to
- 10:28Speaker 2: do anything he doesn't want to do, and he wants
- 10:30Speaker 2: to win.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Well, we've been lucky to watch the last few years
- 10:34Speaker 1: with these guys who have that same DNA coach.
- 10:37Speaker 4: We appreciate it. All right, We'll see in Chicago to
- 10:40Speaker 4: Paul Sunday afternoon. See you then, all right, we'll be
- 10:43Speaker 1: Back with more of the Ukon men's basketball coaches showed
- 10:46Speaker 1: a moment on lear Field.
